Novel hydroxy-functionalized phosphabenzenes were synthesized, which provide the possibility to prepare chiral phosphabenzene–phosphites. These systems act as bidentate ligands toward rhodium centers and the corresponding metal complexes were applied in the rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of prochiral substrates.

This article describes the synthesis and binding properties of highly selective noncovalent molecular receptors 1(3).(DEB)6 and 3(3).(DEB)6 for different hydroxyl functionalized anthraquinones 2. These receptors are formed by the self-assembly of three calix[4]arene dimelamine derivative molecules (1 or 3) and six diethylbarbiturate (DEB) molecules to give 1(3).(DEB)6 or 3(3).(DEB)6. Encapsulation of 2 occurs in a highly organized manner; that is, a noncovalent hydrogen-bonded trimer of 2 is formed within the hydrogen-bonded receptors 1(3).(DEB)6 and 3(3).(DEB)6. Both receptors 1(3).(DEB)6 and 3(3).(DEB)6 change conformation from staggered to eclipsed upon complexation to afford a better fit for the 2(3) trimer. The receptor selectivity toward different anthraquinone derivatives 2 has been studied using 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, UV spectroscopy, and isothermal microcalorimetry (ITC). The pi-pi stacking between the electron-deficient center ring of the anthraquinone derivatives 2a-c and 2e-g and the relatively electron-poor melamine units of the receptor is the driving force for the encapsulation of the guest molecules. The selectivity of the hydrogen-bonded host for the anthraquinone derivatives is the result of steric interactions between the guest molecules and the calix[4]arene aromatic rings of the host.

The chiral centres in the dilactone moiety of the title compound, C13H14O5, are in the configuration 3S,6R. The ring itself has a somewhat flattened twist-boat conformation. C—H⋯O inter­actions join the mol­ecules into a two-dimensional network running parallel to the (101) plane.

The reaction of 1,3-dibenzylimidazolium bromide (Bn2Im · HBr) with silver(I) oxide yields the dinuclear compound {(Bn2Im)AgBr}2 as determined with X-ray crystallography. The structure turned out to differ significantly from the mononuclear complex (Bn2Im)2AgBr that was reported during our studies. It appears that the various structures are a result of different crystallization conditions. A new classification of solid-state structures of these and other silver(I) complexes containing monodentate N-heterocyclic carbenes is presented.

Poly(aminophthalimide) (PAP) dimers and trimers have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of 3-aminophthalimides with 3-chloro- and 3,6-dichlorophthalimide, respectively. When Pd(OAc)2, XPhos (2-dicyclohexylphosphino- 20,40,60-triisopropylbiphenyl), and K3PO4 are used, the C–N bond-forming reactions proceed quantitatively. The structures of those oligomers are examined by experimental and theoretical techniques including NMR, IR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculations. The strong preference for cisoid structure of the diphthalimidylamine unit bearing a bifurcate hydrogen bonding is disclosed. Therefore, the aminophthalimide backbone is a highly promising candidate for the construction of a dynamically ordered helical structure.

The crystal structure of the title compound, tetrabutylammonium bis(2-thioxo-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolato)nickelate(III), [N(C4H9)4][Ni(C3S5)2], is the fourth known phase of this polymorphous compound. It is monoclinic space group P21/c, with a = 20.040(2) Å, b = 13.1151(17) Å, c = 12.1093(15) Å, = 105.456(15)°, and V = 3067.5(6) Å3 with Z = 4, for D calc = 1.503 g cm–3. The [Ni(dmit)2] anion packing arrangement consists of arrays of side-on touching anions and these arrays are connected via head-to-tail close S S contacts.

In the chiral title compound, C18H28O3, the two six-membered rings of the perhydronaphthalenone adopt a rigid chair–chair conformation and the five-membered dioxolanyl ring adopts an envelope conformation. The crystal structure is stabilized only by weak interactions

A 3-ureidobenzo-1,2,4-triazine 1-N-oxide (1) was synthesized successfully. The derivative displays an acceptor-donor-acceptor-acceptor (ADAA) hydrogen-bonding motif in CDCl3 and DMSO-d6 solution as well as in the solid state. Although moderately strong association of 1 was observed with DAD motifs, nonspecific binding is observed with ureidopyridines featuring a complementary DADD array. Density functional calculations of conformations 1a and 1b together with two complexes revealed the clearly nonplanar geometry of the multiply hydrogen-bonded complex, in which some bonds are significantly longer (3.2 Å) than is optimal for H-bonds. As a result, only very small free energies of association were calculated, in line with the experimentally observed absence of specific assembly of the components.

The preparation of new manganese and iron complexes with the general formula [M(tripod)(anion)] is described, where M = FeIII or MnIII, “tripod” is a dianionic tetradentate tripodal ligand and the anion is a chelating β-diketonate, 8-oxyquinoline or acetate. The synthesis of this type of complexes was found to be straightforward, which allows for the preparation of a large variety of such coordination compounds. The complexes are characterised by X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and elemental analysis. A correlation between the ligand sets and the electron density at the metal centre in the complexes is proposed, based on the UV/Vis data and the CV measurements. The tripodal ligands are significant π-donor ligands, and electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents on the phenolate arms were found to have a large influence on both the position of the d–d transitions in the UV/Vis spectra and the peak potentials in the CV measurements. The “secondary” β-diketonate or acetate ligand does not have such a large effect on the electron density of the metal centre.

The first examples of lanthanide complexes with a 2-hydroxyisophthalate ligand are reported; the blue-emitting ligand acts as a very efficient sensitizer of the Tb(III) green emissions and does so in the near-UV region.

The autoxidation and oligomerisation of ethyl linoleate (EL) catalyzed by manganese salts in combination with several Schiff-base ligands has been studied making use of time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy. The results indicate that several of the combinations exhibit relatively high catalytic activity for the autoxidation of EL. One of the catalyst systems was studied in more detail. The reaction between MnCl2·2H2O and the Schiff-base ligand (L4) formed by the condensation of 2-pyridinealdehyde and 2-aminopyridine has been studied to clarify the catalytic reaction process. It was found that the Schiff-base ligand L4 reacts with water and the tridentate ligand (2-pyridyl)(2-pyridylamino)methanol (HOL4) is formed. A single crystal structure of [MnIII(OL4)2]Cl·3H2O has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods.

The reaction of btzmp (1,2-bis(tetrazol-1-yl)-2-methylpropane) with Fe(ClO4)2 generates a 1D polymeric species, [Fe(µ-btzmp)2(btzmp)2](ClO4)2, showing a steep spin transition (T1/2 = 136 K and T1/2 = 133 K) with a 3 K thermal hysteresis. The crystal structure at 100 and 200 K reveals that, in contrast to other bistetrazole based spin-transition systems such as [Fe(endi)3](BF4)2 and [Fe(btzp)3](ClO4)2, the present compound has only two ligands bridging the metallic centres, while the other two coordination positions are occupied by two mono-coordinated (non-bridging) btzmp ligands. This peculiarity confers an unprecedented crystal packing in the series of 1D bistetrazole based polymers. The change in spin state is accompanied by an order/disorder transition of the ClO4– counterion. A careful examination of the structural changes occurring upon the spin transition indicates that this order/disorder is most likely affected by the modification of the [tetrazole-centroid]–ND–Fe angle (which is typical of bistetrazole spin-transition materials). Apart from X-ray analysis, also magnetic susceptibility, Mössbauer and UV-vis spectroscopies have been used to characterise the HS and the LS states of [Fe(µ-btzmp)2(btzmp)2](ClO4)2.

The multiple monovalent binding of adamantyl-urea poly(propyleneimine) dendrimers with carboxylic acid-urea guests was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations and Xray crystallography to better understand the structure and behavior of the dynamic multivalent complex in solution. The results from the two methods are consistent and suggest a preferred molecular picture of this complicated aggregate of multiple components. The guest molecules can bind to the dendrimer in a variety of ways although most involve hydrogen-bonding interactions between urea groups of the dendrimer with urea and/or carboxylic acid groups of the guest. In addition, acid-base interactions between the carboxylic acid of the guest and the tertiary amine in the interior of the dendritic host are present. Our proposed structure gives important information about the predominant dynamic interactions between the host and guest and illustrates how they fit together and interact with each other.

An X-ray crystallographic study of ‘meso-amavadin’ revealed that in the crystal the negatively charged anionic species of the title compound join into infinite hydrogen-bonded chains, counterbalanced by cationic hydronium species. Along with water of crystallization a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network is formed. Based on NMR- and X-ray data of amavadin and ‘meso-amavadin’, a model was developed that accounts for the structure of amavadin-type complexes, i.e. vanadium(IV) non-oxo complexes that contain two ligands with a tridentate N-hydroxyiminodiacetate backbone. The model describes the different arrangements of the two ligands around the vanadium and it accounts for eventual symmetry in the complex. The model was used for the interpretation of NMR-data of an amavadin analogue with a benzyl group at the ligand backbone.

A new Au(III) coordination compound with the ligand 2-(phenylazo)pyridine has been synthesized and fully characterized by means of elemental analysis, IR, UV–visible, conductivity measurements, NMR, electrospray ionization (ESI-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The chemical stability of the cation in this compound, [Au(azpy)Cl2]+ (abbreviated: Au-azpy), was analyzed by means of several physicochemical methods. While stable in the solid state, stability studies performed with the gold compound in solution showed an unexpected and unprecedented reactivity. A cationic organic derivative of 2-(phenylazo)pyridine, (abbreviated: pyrium), was produced from the solution and has been isolated as its chloride salt and characterized by crystal structure determination, elemental analysis, NMR, ESI-MS and conductivity studies in solution. This cyclization reaction is reported for the first time in the case of gold coordination compounds. The Au adduct and the pyrium cation were investigated as potential cytotoxic and anticancer agents, and both show moderate to high cytotoxic properties in cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatin-resistant ovarian carcinoma cell lines, A2780; and cisplatin-sensitive and cisplatinresistant murine lymphocytic leukemia cell lines, L1210. Significant anticancer activity against the cisplatin resistant cell lines was found for the pyrium salt, ruling out the occurrence of cross resistance phenomena.

Iron complexes of two ligands, HphoxCOOH and HphoxiPr, have been synthesized and characterized by crystal structure analyses. The complexes (HNEt3)2[Fe(phoxCOO)2](ClO4) and [Fe(phoxiPr)3] are reported. Reactions of the ligands rac-HphoxCOOH and rac- HphoxiPr with iron(II) or iron(III) perchlorate result in the formation of iron(III) complexes with pseudo-octahedral geometry around the metal center. The iron complex obtained from rac-HphoxCOOH crystallized in the centrosymmetric space group Cmca. The two ligands are bound in a tridentate manner generating a meridional coordination with both dianionic ligands on a metal center having the same chirality; due to the center of symmetry the complex with opposite chirality is also present. The complex (HNEt3)2[Fe(phox- COO)2](ClO4) is the first accurate structural model of the iron complex of a siderophore analog commonly observed in mycobactins. The three didentate ligands in the complex [Fe(phoxiPr)3] are bound with like atoms in a meridional manner to the metal center. The metal ion is surrounded by two ligands of the same chirality and one ligand of opposite chirality (ie. RRS or SSR); due to the presence of a center of symmetry both isomers are present in the crystal structure. The complex (HNEt3)2[Fe(phoxCOO)2](ClO4) shows promising activity in the oxidation of alkanes, such as toluene, ethylbenzene and cumene, while the complex [Fe(phoxiPr)3] does not show any catalytic activity in alkane oxidations under the conditions tested. The complex (HNEt3)2[Fe(phoxCOO)2](ClO4) is reasonably efficient in the conversion of H2O2 to oxidation products.

Reaction of RuH2CO(PPh3)3 with tetrafluorosuccinic acid at 100 °C gave rise to the formation of the dinuclear bis(tetrafluorosuccinate)-bridged Ru(II) complex 2, containing two water ligands. Exchange of the PPh3 in complex 2 with various diphosphine ligands afforded a series of analogous complexes 3. Reaction of the latter with 1-phenylethanol at 130 °C or with 2-propanol/Et3N at room temperature furnished the dinuclear dihydrido-bridged Ru(II) complexes 4. Complexes 2 and 4 were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. Both bis(tetrafluorosuccinate)-bridged complexes 3 and dihydrido-bridged complexes 4 catalyze the acceptorless dehydrogenation of 1-phenylethanol to acetophenone and dihydrogen with good yields and excellent selectivity under relatively mild conditions in the absence of acid or base. A tentative catalytic cycle for the dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols by Ru(II) complexes of type 3 is presented.
