Ornamental jewelweed (Impatiens glandulifera Royle) is an alien invasive plant in Europe. This annual plant often grows in riparian habitats where herbicides are prohibited. Several studies have reported the negative effect on ecosystem and ecosystem services by this species. However, limited research is published on control measures and the aim of our study was to explore use of hot water and cutting to control I. glandulifera. A lab experiment showed that the lethal water temperature for seed was between 45 and 50 C. In a pot experiment with seeds in soil, emergence of I. glandulifera was reduced by 78% and 93% compared with the untreated control with volumes of hot water (80 C) of 7.2 and 14.5 L m−2, respectively. When treatments were conducted on relatively tall plants (almost 60 cm) in late June, hot water gave significantly better control than cutting. Compared with an untreated control, I. glandulifera cover was reduced by 97% and 79% after hot water and cutting, respectively. Application of hot water to smaller (I. glandulifera cover was reduced by 99% (cut below first node) and 91% (hot water and cut above first node). When relatively tall plants (almost 60 cm) were treated, hot water use was high (31.1 L m−2) and required twice as many work hours (4.8 min m−2) as cutting (2.4 min m−2). Elevated levels of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation may co-occur and pose cumulative hazards to biota. However, the combined effects and underlying toxicity mechanisms of different types of radiation in aquatic plants remain poorly understood. The present study aims to demonstrate how different combined toxicity prediction approaches can collectively characterise how chronic (7 days) exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (0.5 W m−2) modulates gamma (γ) radiation (14.9, 19.5, 43.6 mGy h−1) induced stress responses in the macrophyte Lemna minor. A suite of bioassays was applied to quantify stress responses at multiple levels of biological organisation. The combined effects (no-enhancement, additivity, synergism, antagonism) were determined by two-way analysis of variance (2 W-ANOVA) and a modified Independent Action (IA) model. The toxicological responses and the potential causality between stressors were further visualised by a network of toxicity pathways. The results showed that γ-radiation or UVB alone induced oxidative stress and programmed cell death (PCD) as well as impaired oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and photosystem II (PSII) activity in L. minor. γ-radiation also activated antioxidant responses, DNA damage repair and chlorophyll metabolism, and inhibited growth at higher dose rates (≥20 mGy h−1). When co-exposed, UVB predominantly caused non-interaction (no-enhancement or additive) effects on γ-radiation-induced antioxidant gene expression, energy quenching in PSII and growth for all dose rates, whereas antagonistic effects were observed for lipid peroxidation, OXPHOS, PCD, oxidative stress, chlorophyll metabolism and genes involved in DNA damage responses. Synergistic effects were observed for changes in photochemical quenching and non-photochemical quenching, and up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme genes (GST) at one or more dose rates, while synergistic reproductive inhibition occurred at all three γ-radiation dose rates. The present study provides mechanistic knowledge, quantitative understanding and novel analytical strategies to decipher combined effects across levels of biological organisation, which should facilitate future cumulative hazard assessments of multiple stressors.

Embargo until 08 July 2020 Exposure to ambient UV-B radiation may prime protective responses towards various stressors in plants, though information about interactive effects of UV-B and gamma radiation is scarce. Here, we aimed to test whether UV-B exposure could prime acclimatisation mechanisms contributing to tolerance to low-moderate gamma radiation levels in Scots pine seedlings, and concurrently whether simultaneous UV-B and gamma exposure may have an additive adverse effect on seedlings that had previously not encountered either of these stressors. Responses to simultaneous UV-B (0.35 W m−2) and gamma radiation (10.2–125 mGy h−1) for 6 days with or without UV-B pre-exposure (0.35 W m−2, 4 days) were studied across various levels of organisation, as compared to effects of either radiation type. In contrast to UV-B, and regardless of UV-B presence, gamma radiation at ≥42.9 mGy h−1 caused increased formation of reactive oxygen species and reduced shoot length, and reduced root length at 125 mGy h−1. In all experiments there was a gamma dose rate-dependent increase in DNA damage at ≥10.8 mGy h−1, generally with additional UV-B-induced damage. Gamma-induced growth inhibition and gamma- and UV-B-induced DNA damage were still visible 44 days post-irradiation, even at 20.7 mGy h−1, probably due to genomic instability, but this was reversed after 8 months. In conclusion, there was no evidence of a protective effect of UV-B on gamma-induced growth inhibition and DNA damage in Scots pine, and no additive adverse effect of gamma and UV-B radiation on growth in spite of the additional UV-B-induced DNA damage.

Retention of trees after logging is a method of preserving epiphytic lichens; however, epiphytes’ responses to logging disturbance are insufficiently known. We aimed to characterize four viability measures — effective PSII yield (ΦPSII; a proxy for photosynthesis), maximal photosystem II efficiency (FV/FM; a proxy for photoinhibition), chlorophyll a content, and chlorophyll a/b ratio — and the functional parameter specific thallus mass (STM; a proxy for water storage) in sympatric populations of two old-growth lichens (Lobaria retigera (Bory) Trevisan and Lobaria oregana (Tuck.) Müll. Arg.) and the less old-growth dependent Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. along recently logged forest edge gradients within retained forest patches. All species experienced substantially reduced chlorophyll contents near edges, whereas ΦPSII was lower in the two old-growth lichens than in L. pulmonaria. STM, and thus lichen water storage, did not respond to logging, probably because chlorophyll degradation reduced the carbon gain required for necessary acclimation. Reported edge effects on lichen viability were so strong that most of the epiphytic lichens in the retained forest patches were affected. Measured viability variables improved linearly with distances up to ≈120 m from the edge. To avoid logging-induced adverse impacts on the threatened epiphytic lichens of these old-growth rainforests, there is a need to retain forest patches wider than 240 m.

High relative humidity (RH) perturbs plant growth, stomatal functioning and abscisic acid (ABA) homeostasis, but the role of ABA in this physiological regulation is equivocal. To determine the role(s) of ABA in plant responses to high RH, wild-type (WT) tomato and barley plants and their respective ABA-deficient mutants flacca and Az34 (which are mutated in the same locus of the ABA biosynthesis pathway) were grown in contrasting RHs (60% and 90%) to measure biomass partitioning, stomatal traits and water relations. Surprisingly, growth RH did not affect foliar ABA levels in either species. While Az34 showed similar stomatal size and density as WT plants, flacca had larger and more abundant stomata. High RH increased stomatal size in tomato, but decreased it in barley, and decreased stomatal density in tomato, but not in barley. Altered stomatal responses in ABA-deficient plants to high RH had little effect on tomato photosynthesis, but Az34 barley showed lower photosynthesis. ABA deficiency decreased relative shoot growth rate (RGRSHOOT) in both species, yet this was counteracted by high RH increasing leaf water status in tomato, but not in barley. High RH increased RGRSHOOT in flacca, but not in WT tomatoes, while having no effect on RGRSHOOT in barley, but affecting barley net assimilation rate, leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf area in an ABA-dependent manner. ABA-RH interaction affected leaf development in tomato only. Thus, different crop species show variable responses to both high RH and ABA deficiency, making it difficult to generalise on the role of ABA in growth regulation at contrasting RHs. © 2021 The Authors. Growth in high relative air humidity (RH, >85%) affects plant morphology and causes diminished response to stomatal closing signals. Many greenhouses are prone to high RH conditions, which may negatively affect production and post-harvest quality. UV radiation induces stomatal closure in several species, and facilitates disease control. We hypothesised that UV exposure may trigger stomatal closure in pea plants (Pisum sativum) grown in high RH, thereby restoring stomatal function. The effects of UV exposure were tested on plants grown in moderate (60%) or high (90%) RH. UV exposure occurred at night, according to a disease control protocol. Lower stomatal conductance rates were found in UV-exposed plants, though UV exposure did not improve the rate of response to closing stimuli or desiccation tolerance. UV-exposed plants showed leaf curling, chlorosis, necrosis, and DNA damage measured by the presence of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD), all of which were significantly greater in high RH plants. These plants also had lower total flavonoid content than moderate RH plants, and UV-exposed plants had less than controls. Plants exposed to UV had a higher content of cuticular layer uronic compounds than control plants. However, high RH plants had a higher relative amount of cuticular waxes, but decreased proteins and uronic compounds. Plants grown in high RH had reduced foliar antioxidant power compared to moderate RH. These results indicate that high RH plants were more susceptible to UV-induced damage than moderate RH plants due to reduced flavonoid content and oxidative stress defence.

Some lichenized ascomycetes synthesize melanic pigments when exposed to ultraviolet light and high solar radiation. Here, we used chlorophyll fluorescence in order to test the effect of melanisation on the ability of the lichens Cetraria islandica, Lobaria pulmonaria, Peltigera aphthosa, P. membranacea, Pseudocyphellaria gilva, and Sticta sublimbata to tolerate high-light stress. For each species, melanised and pale thalli were selected from relatively exposed and shaded individuals of the same population. For all species, melanised thalli displayed significantly less photoinhibition than pale thalli following a controlled exposure of hydrated thalli to high light. Melanised thalli were less photoinhibited than pale thalli in lichens from both high light and more shaded habitats, and those that possess either green-algal or cyanobacterial photobionts. Photoinhibition also occurred when dry lichens were exposed to high light; melanised thalli showed again less photoinhibition. Melanised thalli are less sensitive to the adverse effects of high light.

Background Pollen beetles are key pests in oilseed rape (OSR) production. These beetles use visual and olfactory cues to locate their host plants at specific phenological stages, hence trap cropping may represent an alternative pest control strategy. In this study, a trap crop strategy for spring OSR was developed. To elaborate such a trap cropping system, a pest control measure that eradicates the attracted beetles in the trap crop before they migrate further into the main crop was included in the final trap cropping strategy. Results Testing yellow-flowering turnip rape and one yellow- and two cream-coloured flowering OSR cultivars as potential crops in different trap cropping strategies, we found that pollen beetles clearly preferred turnip rape over the cream-coloured and yellow OSR cultivars, and preferred the yellow OSR cultivar over the two cream-coloured cultivars. This behaviour was related to the plant growth stage and associated volatile and colour signals of the tested cultivars. Using turnip rape as a trap crop and testing kairomone- or insecticide-assisted trap cropping as the pest control strategy was as effective as compared with whole fields treated with a standard pesticide. Conclusion Combining a turnip rape cultivar as trap crop with kairomone traps placed in the trap crop as a killing agent may enable renunciation of pesticides in spring OSR production. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Lichens are frequently used as indicators of air-borne depositions, yet the differential effect of different mineral nutrients on lichen growth is still poorly understood. Here we quantify relative lichen growth rates (RGR) in representatives of three functional groups (chloro-, cephalo-, cyanolichens; Xanthoria parietina, Lobaria pulmonaria, Lobarina scrobiculata, respectively) placed in growth cabinets and subjected to eight fertilization regimes, i.e. four concentrations of NH4NO3 with and without the addition of other essential nutrients. After the experimental period of 14 days, we were able to document: (1) most N in the sprayed solutions that could fill the lichen's water holding capacity (WHC) was taken up, except for lower uptake in the cyanolichen at high N irrigation; (2) an increase in chlorophyll a (Chl a – a proxy of photosynthetic capacity) in the chlorolichen with increasing N irrigation; (3) a strong corresponding decline in Chl a in the cyanolichen; (4) unchanged Chl a in the cephalolichen; and (5) a decline in RGR in all species with increasing N irrigation. Addition of other essential nutrients significantly boosted RGR in all species, suggesting that N was not the most limiting element. We conclude that (1) short-term growth experiments can characterize lichens’ fitness in response to mineral nutrient deposition, and that (2) WHC contributes to lichens’ capacity to capture mineral nutrients from wet depositions.

Main conclusion UVB radiation caused irradiance-dependent and target-specific responses in non-UVB acclimated Lemna minor. Conceptual toxicity pathways were developed to propose causal relationships between UVB-mediated effects at multiple levels of biological organisation. Abstract Macrophytes inhabit waterways around the world and are used in hydroponics or aquaponics for different purposes such as feed and wastewater treatment and are thus exposed to elevated levels of UVB from natural and artificial sources. Although high UVB levels are harmful to macrophytes, mechanistic understanding of irradiance-dependent effects and associated modes of action in non-UVB acclimated plants still remains low. The present study was conducted to characterise the irradiance-dependent mechanisms of UVB leading to growth inhibition in Lemna minor as an aquatic macrophyte model. The L. minor were continuously exposed to UVB (0.008–4.2 W m−2) and constant UVA (4 W m−2) and photosynthetically active radiation, PAR (80 µmol m−2 s−1) for 7 days. A suite of bioassays was deployed to assess effects on oxidative stress, photosynthesis, DNA damage, and transcription of antioxidant biosynthesis, DNA repair, programmed cell death, pigment metabolism and respiration. The results showed that UVB triggered both irradiance-dependent and target-specific effects at multiple levels of biological organization, whereas exposure to UVA alone did not cause any effects. Inhibition of photosystem II and induction of carotenoids were observed at 0.23 W m−2, whereas growth inhibition, excessive reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer formation, mitochondrial membrane potential reduction and chlorophyll depletion were observed at 0.5–1 W m−2. Relationships between responses at different levels of biological organization were used to establish a putative network of toxicity pathways to improve our understanding of UVB effects in aquatic macrophytes under continuous UVB exposures. Additional studies under natural illuminations were proposed to assess whether these putative toxicity pathways may also be relevant for more ecologically relevant exposure scenarios.

High dose rates of ionizing radiation have been reported to cause adverse effects such as reduction in reproduction and growth, and damage to protein and lipids in primary producers. However, the relevant effects of ionizing radiation are still poorly understood in aquatic plants. This study was intended to characterize the biological effects and modes of action (MoAs) of ionizing radiation using gamma radiation as the prototypical stressor and duckweed Lemna minor as a model organism. Lemna minor was exposed to 1, 14, 24, 46, 70 mGy/h gamma radiation dose rates from a cobalt-60 source for 7 days following the testing principles of the OECD test guideline 221. A suite of bioassays was applied to assess the biological effects of gamma radiation at multiple levels of biological organization, including detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress responses (total glutathione, tGSH; lipid peroxidation, LPO), DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunctions (mitochondrial membrane potential, MMP), photosynthetic parameters (chlorophyll a, chl a; chlorophyll b, chl b; carotenoids; Photosystem II (PSII) performance; CO2 uptake), intercellular signaling (Ca2+ release) and growth. Gamma radiation increased DNA damage, tGSH level and Ca2+ content together with reduction in chlorophyll content, maximal PSII efficiency and CO2 uptake at dose rates between 1 and 14 mGy/h, whereas increases in cellular ROS and LPO, inhibition of MMP and growth were observed at higher dose rates (≥24 mGy/h). A network of toxicity pathways was proposed to portray the causal relationships between gamma radiation-induced physiological responses and adverse outcomes to support the development of Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) for ionizing radiation-mediated effects in primary producers.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is well known to affect plant growth and development and to vary with latitude and altitude. The knowledge about the effect of high UV levels at high altitudes close to the equator on plant productivity is scarce. By using UV-transmitting and UV-blocking films, the impact of solar UV on growth and production potential of commercial pea ( Pisum sativum ) was studied at a high (2800 m above sea level (masl)) and a lower (1700 masl) altitude in Ethiopia during the dry (January–March) and wet (April–June) seasons. Morphological characteristics like plant height and number of branches as well as flowering time were affected by UV. Compared to the UV-blocking film, under the UV-transmitting film plants were 15–19% shorter and produced more branches at both altitudes and seasons. The flowering was delayed 2–5 days when exposed to UV but only minor differences were found in numbers of pods. Numbers of leaves and specific leaf area were important for pod number. These parameters were more affected by altitude and season than UV level. Also, stomatal conductance at lower altitude was affected by season and was very low (0.06–0.08 mmol m − 2 s − 1 ) during the dry season compared to wet season, irrespective of UV radiation. At higher altitude (2800 masl) UV radiation increased stomata conductance. Thus, the effect of UV on conductance depends largely on the interaction with other environmental conditions. Maximal PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm) was lowest in the dry season at both altitudes and the lowest value (0.66) was measured on plants exposed to UV radiation at high altitude. In conclusion, UV radiation affects plant morphology, flowering time, Fv/Fm and leaf conductance, but other climate factors, like irradiance, temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD), have a stronger impact on productivity of pea than UV radiation.

We quantified annual growth rate and loss of Bryoria capillaris and Usnea dasopoga transplants on Picea abies on parts of lower branches in the inner versus outer canopy in small, medium and tall trees in hemiboreal forests. Light at branches in the inner canopy was 2.7 x (for Bryoria capillaris) and 2.0 x (for Usnea dasopoga) higher than the lichens’ respective light compensation points, 10.7 ± 1.2 and 14.5 ± 2.2 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively. Many Bryoria thalli were lost/fragmented on sheltered inner branches of small and intermediate trees, not on outer canopy branches exposed to wind, rain and snow. Hardly any loss occurred for Usnea. After excluding lost/fragmented specimens, Bryoria that remained intact grew faster (43.1 ± 4.4%) than Usnea (29.8 ± 1.4%). Outer canopy branches supported higher growth rates in Usnea (35.6 ± 1.5%) than inner branches (23.5 ± 2.1%), consistent with its association with rainy areas, whereas Bryoria that avoided loss grew fast in both branch locations. Bryoria, lower in secondary carbon-based compounds than Usnea, and thus the more palatable species, was likely grazed on inner branches and smaller trees accessible to rodents.

This study demonstrates that the spectral quality of radiation sources applied with ultraviolet-B (UV-B; background radiation) affects the suppression of cucumber powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) by UV-B. Suppression provided by daily UV-B exposure of 1 W/m2 for 10 min was greatest in the presence of red light or by a complete lack of background light, and powdery mildew suppression was least in the presence of ultraviolet-A (UV-A) or blue radiation compared with plants exposed only to 16 h of daily natural light supplemented with high-pressure sodium lamps that supply broad-spectrum radiation with peaks in the yellow-orange region. Exposure of powdery mildew-inoculated plants to supplemental red light without UV-B, beginning at the end of the daylight period, also reduced disease severity; however, supplemental blue light applied in the same fashion had no effect. Daily application of UV-B at 1 W/m2 beginning on the day of inoculation significantly reduced the severity of powdery mildew to 15% compared with 100% severity on control plants. Maximum suppression of powdery mildew was observed following 15 min of exposure to UV-B (1.1% severity compared with 100% severity on control plants) but exposure time had to be limited to 5 to 10 min to reduce phytotoxicity. There was no additional disease suppression when plants were exposed to UV-B beginning 2 days prior to inoculation compared with plants exposed to UV-B beginning on the day of inoculation. UV-B inhibited germination, infection, colony expansion, and sporulation of P. xanthii. The results suggest that efficacy of UV-B treatments, alone or in combination with red light, against P. xanthii can be enhanced by exposure of inoculated plants to these wavelengths of radiation during the night, thereby circumventing the counteracting effects of blue light and UV-A radiation. The effect of UV-B on powdery mildew seemed to be directly upon the pathogen, rather than induced resistance of the host. Night exposure of plants to 5 to 10 min of UV-B at 1 W/m2 and inexpensive, spectral-specific, light-emitting diodes may provide additional tools to suppress powdery mildews of diverse greenhouse crops.

Disease-suppressive effects of nighttime applications of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) were investigated at two irradiance levels (1.6 or 0.8 W/m2) in strawberry and rosemary plants inoculated with Podosphaera aphanis or Golovinomyces biocellatus, respectively. Plants were exposed to each irradiance level every third night for either 9 or 18 min, every night for either 3 or 6 min, or three times every night for either 1 or 2 min. Thus, over time, all plants received the same cumulative dose of UV-B, and severity of powdery mildew was reduced by 90 to 99% compared with untreated controls in both crops. Use of polished aluminum lamp reflectors and UV-B reflective surfaces on greenhouse benches significantly increased treatment efficacy. An automated apparatus consisting of an adjustable boom with directed airflow was used to move UV-B lamps over greenhouse benches at 25 or 50 cm/min. Directed airflow moved leaves on the subtending plants to better expose upper and lower surfaces to UV-B but directed airflow actually decreased the efficacy of UV-B treatments, possibly by dispersing conidia from lesions before they were exposed to a lethal dose of UV-B. Results indicate broad applicability of nighttime applications of UV-B to suppress powdery mildews, and that cumulative UV-B dose is an overriding factor determining efficacy. Finally, enhanced suppression on shaded or obscured tissues is more likely to be affected by reflective bench surfaces than through attempts to physically manipulate the foliage.

In the lab, we exposed three foliose lichen species, Lobaria pulmonaria, Parmelia sulcata and Xanthoria aureola, to 0, 0.01, 0.2, and 0.6 M NaCl in combinations with copper and zinc (0, 10, 100, 500 μM). High salt concentrations adversely affected the lichen membrane integrity as measured by conductivity methods, whereas the potential photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm) was tolerant. High light was necessary to reduce Fv/Fm in thalli exposed to salt, whereas high light did not aggravate the conductivity. The seashore species X. aureola was much more resistant to salt than the old forest species L. pulmonaria. With respect to Cu and Zn, used concentrations had no (P. sulcata, X. aureola) or small (L. pulmonaria) effects on Fv/Fm. However, both heavy metals substantially increased conductivity in all species, consistent with membrane damage. Thus, the conductivity method detected high salt, high copper and high zinc stress much more efficiently than did the chlorophyll fluorescence method. This suggests that membrane integrity of the mycobiont is more sensitive to salt and heavy metal stress than potential photosystem II efficiency of its autotrophic partners.

Standard chemical toxicity testing guidelines using aquatic plant Lemna minor have been developed by several international standardisation organisations. Although being highly useful for regulatory purposes by focusing on traditional adverse endpoints, these tests provide limited information about the toxic mechanisms and modes of action (MoA). The present study aimed to use selected functional assays in L. minor after exposure to 3,5-dichlorophenol (3,5-DCP) as a model to characterise the toxic mechanisms causing growth inhibition and lethality in primary producers. The results demonstrated that 3,5-DCP caused concentration-dependent effects in chloroplasts and mitochondria. Uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), reduction in chlorophyll (Chlorophyll a and b) content, reproduction rate and frond size were the most sensitive endpoints, followed by formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduction of carotenoid content and impairment of photosynthesis efficiency. Suppression of photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, electron transport rate (ETR), chlorophyll (a and b) contents and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) were closely correlated while ROS production and LPO were negative correlated with ETR, carotenoid content and growth parameters. A network of conceptual Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) was developed to decipher the causal relationships between molecular, cellular, and apical adverse effects occurring in L. minor to form a basis for future studies with similar compounds. Blue and yellow sticky traps equipped with blue light emitting diodes (LEDs) were evaluated for their attractiveness to the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) and compared to similar traps without light in two greenhouses with commercial production of either mixed herbs or Alstroemeria cut flowers. Blue traps were more attractive to F. occidentalis than the yellow traps in both crops, regardless of whether they were equipped with light or not. In herbs, the blue light equipped traps caught 1.7 to 2.5 times more thrips compared to blue traps without light, and 1.7 to 3.0 times more thrips than yellow traps with light. Blue light on both blue and yellow traps increased thrips catches in one out of two experiments in Alstroemeria. The blue light equipped traps caught 3.4 and 4.0 times more thrips than blue traps without light in coloured and white Alstroemeria cultivars, respectively, whereas yellow light equipped traps increased thrips catches 4.5 times compared to yellow traps without light in both coloured and white cultivars. The yellow light equipped traps caught, however, only equal to or only slightly more thrips than blue traps without light, and caught fewer thrips than the light equipped blue traps. The relative trapping efficiency of the different combinations of trap colour and light varied with experiment, crop and Alstroemeria cultivars. This suggests that factors other than merely the addition of light influenced the thrips' phototactic response to the traps. Such factors could be differences in the relative strength of the competition between attractive signals from traps and plants between the two crops and Alstroemeria cultivars, thrips density, seasonal lighting conditions or different pest management strategies and other operational procedures in the greenhouses. The light from the traps did not increase the thrips population on the plants below the traps. The implications of the results for thrips control and suggestions for further studies are discussed. Phototactic response of Frankliniella occidentalis to sticky traps with blue light emitting diodes in herb and Alstroemeria greenhouses

Greenhouse production of poinsettia calls for strict control of morphological parameters, which may be achieved through the use of chemical growth retardants. Use of such chemicals is becoming restricted thus alternative methods for growth control are needed. Here the effects of UV radiation were tested on Euphorbia pulcherrima (Willd ex. Klotzch) in controlled environment under moderate (60%) and high (90%) relative air humidity (RH), to determine the potential to control plant morphology. Vegetative plants (‘Christmas Feelings’) received UV during the dark period, while two generative cultivars, one strong growing phenotype ‘Infinity Red’ (‘IR’) and one more compact phenotype ‘Bravo Bright Red’ (‘BBR’), received UV at the end of the light period (EOD). The morphology of vegetative plants was mainly affected by RH rather than UV radiation. Generative plants were also strongly affected by RH, though both cultivars showed reduced plant diameter, shoot biomass, leaf area, and bract area when exposed to UV, as well as increased leaf chlorophyll content, though responses to UV were stronger in moderate RH compared to high RH. Transpiration of leaves and bracts was mainly affected by RH not UV, and photosynthesis and production time were not affected by either RH or UV. We conclude that UV radiation is a potential tool to grow more compact plants, though its effects are partially determined by the aerial environment.

Photosynthesis was compared in two cyanobacterial lichens (Lobaria hallii and Peltigera praetextata) and two green algal lichens (Lobaria pulmonaria and Peltigera leucophlebia) exposed to red, green or blue light. Cyanolichens had substantially lower photosynthetic CO(2) uptake and O(2) evolution than the green algal lichens in blue light, but slightly higher photosynthesis in red and green light. The effective quantum yield of photosystem (PS) II (Φ(PSII)) decreased with increasing red and green light for all species, but in blue light this response occurred in green algal lichens only. Cyanolichen Φ(PSII) increased with increasing blue light at low irradiances, but decreased at stronger exposures. However, after adding red light the efficiency of blue light for photosynthetic O(2) evolution increased by 2.4 times. Because phycobilisomes associated with PSII have a low blue light absorption, our results are consistent with blue light absorption mainly by Chl in PSI. Thereby, unequal allocation of excitation energy between PSII and PSI results in low cyanolichen photosynthesis under blue light. This is new knowledge in the science of lichenology with important implications for e.g. the reliability of using Chl fluorometers with blue light for cyanolichens.

Plants grown in Norwegian greenhouses during winter synthesise low amounts of anthocyanins and flavonols (colourless flavonoids). Higher content of anthocyanins enhances the red colour in lettuce and improves the external quality and marketability of the product. The flavonoids may also benefit consumer health due to their anti-oxidative and presumed anti-carcinogenic effects. The effects of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation given by UV-B tubes (Q-panel UV 313) and by standard cool white fluorescent tubes (Philips Master TL-D 36W/840) on flavonol and anthocyanin synthesis in lettuce cv. Lollo Rosso (Carmoli) were studied. The aim was to increase the content of flavonoids without reducing the fresh weight of the plant. Cool white fluorescent tubes induced high amounts of flavonoids in the plants during a five-day experimental period, with no growth reduction. Quackgrass is a problematic agricultural weed in the temperate zones of the world and is difficult to control without herbicides or intensive tillage. However, it may be possible to control quackgrass with less environmental impact by combining multiple low-intensity control methods. A pot experiment was conducted in July to October 2012 and repeated in June to September 2013 to investigate the effect of rhizome fragmentation, competition from white clover, shoot-cutting frequency, and cutting height on quackgrass. Rhizome fragmentation was expected to result in more, but weaker, quackgrass shoots that would be more vulnerable to shoot cutting and competition. However, by 20 d past planting, rhizome fragmentation did not change the total number of quackgrass shoots per pot, because an increase in main shoots was offset by a decrease in tiller numbers. Rhizome fragmentation did not reduce quackgrass biomass acquisition during the experimental period. Although rhizome fragmentation did reduce total fructan content, it did not enhance the effect of clover competition, shoot-cutting frequency, or shoot-cutting height. Clover competition by itself reduced quackgrass shoot numbers by 72%, rhizome biomass by 81%, and belowground fructan concentration by 10 percentage points, compared with no competition. The more frequently quackgrass shoots were cut, the less biomass quackgrass acquired, and a high shoot-cutting frequency (each time quackgrass reached 2 leaves) resulted in a lower belowground fructan concentration than a low shoot-cutting frequency (at 8 leaves). However, in pots without competition, a higher shoot-cutting frequency resulted in more quackgrass shoots. A lower shoot-cutting height (25 mm) had more impact when shoot cutting was more frequent. In conclusion, rhizome fragmentation did not reduce the number of quackgrass shoots or rhizome biomass, but competition from white clover, a high shoot-cutting frequency, and a low shoot-cutting height strongly suppressed quackgrass biomass and fructan acquisition.

The aquatic environment is continuously exposed to ionizing radiation from both natural and anthropogenic sources, making the characterization of ecological and health risks associated with radiation of large importance. Microalgae represent the main source of biomass production in the aquatic ecosystem, thus becoming a highly relevant biological model to assess the impacts of gamma radiation. However, little information is available on the effects of gamma radiation on microalgal species, making environmental radioprotection of this group of species challenging. In this context, the present study aimed to improve the understanding of the effects and toxic mechanisms of gamma radiation in the unicellular green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii focusing on the activity of the photosynthetic apparatus and ROS formation. Algal cells were exposed to gamma radiation (0.49–1677 mGy/h) for 6 h and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters obtained by PAM fluorometry, while two fluorescent probes carboxy-H2DFFDA and DHR 123 were used for the quantification of ROS. The alterations seen in functional parameters of C. reinhardtii PSII after 6 h of exposure to gamma radiation showed modifications of PSII energy transfer associated with electron transport and energy dissipation pathways, especially at the higher dose rates used. Results also showed that gamma radiation induced ROS in a dose-dependent manner under both light and dark conditions. The observed decrease in photosynthetic efficiency seems to be connected to the formation of ROS and can potentially lead to oxidative stress and cellular damage in chloroplasts. To our knowledge, this is the first report on changes in several chlorophyll fluorescence parameters associated with photosynthetic performance and ROS formation in microalgae after exposure to gamma radiation.

Summary •Desiccation tolerance was quantified in four cyanolichens (Lobaria hallii, Lobaria retigera, Lobaria scrobiculata, Pseudocyphellaria anomala), one cephalolichen (Lobaria pulmonaria) and one chlorolichen (Platismatia glauca) from xeric and mesic, open and closed North American boreal forests. •These sympatric epiphytes were exposed to 0%, 33%, 55% and 75% relative humidity with or without medium light (200 μmol m−2 s−1) for 7 d. Permanent and temporary photoinhibitory damage was recorded as viability measures. •All species tolerated well the drying in darkness, but L. hallii and L. retigera, associated with a very humid climate, showed minor damage at the hardest drying (silica gel). Simultaneous exposure to medium light severely aggravated the drying damage at all relative humidity levels. Combined drying–light exposure was particularly devastating for the widespread chloro- and cephalolichens, whereas cyanolichens, including rare old forest species, were fairly resistant. •The ability to recover after combined drying–light stress (this study) correlated positively with increasing species-specific water holding capacities (from the literature). Cyanolichens, depending on liquid water and large internal water storage, probably require strong drying–light resistance to handle long periods between hydration events, whereas chlorolichens can regularly maintain their photosynthetic apparatus during frequent and rapid activation by humid air on clear mornings.

Growth in two old forest lichens was studied to evaluate how temporal (seasonal) and spatial (aspect-wise) partitioning of biomass and area growth respond to seasonal changes in light and climate. We monitored relative growth rates during annual courses in the cephalolichen Lobaria pulmonaria and the cyanolichen Lobaria scrobiculata transplanted in boreal clear-cut to five fixed aspects in winter, spring, summer, and autumn. For each annual set, growth was quantified in January-March, April-June, July-September and October-December. Mean biomass and area increased in all seasons, but growth was highest in July-September. Mass growth did not follow area increment during a year. As a result, mass per area (specific thallus mass (STM)) declined (L. scrobiculata) or stayed constant (L. pulmonaria) in the dark, humid October-December season, whereas it strongly increased in the dry, sunny April-June season. Aspect influenced growth in species-specific ways. Seasonality in biomass growth mainly followed light availability, whereas area growth was strongest during humid seasons. The substantial STM changes across seasons, species, and aspects can be explained as passive responses to seasonal climate. However, as STM, according to the literature, is a driver of water storage, recorded changes probably improve fitness by prolonging hydration in places or during times with high evaporative demands.

Lichens, representing mutualistic symbioses between photobionts and mycobionts, often accumulate high concentrations of secondary compounds synthesized by the fungal partner. Light screening is one function for cortical compounds being deposited as crystals outside fungal hyphae. These compounds can non-destructively be extracted by 100% acetone from air-dry living thalli. Extraction of atranorin from Physcia aipolia changed the lichen colour from pale grey to green in the hydrated state, whereas acetone-rinsed and control thalli were all pale grey when dry. Removal of parietin from Xanthoria parietina changed the colour of desiccated thalli from orange to grey. Colour changes were quantified by reflectance measurements. By a new chlorophyll fluorescence method, screening was assessed as the decrease in incident irradiance (PAR) necessary to reach identical effective quantum yields of PSII (Phi(PSII)) in acetone-rinsed and control thalli. Thereby, we estimated a screening efficiency due to cortical atranorin crystals at 61, 38, and 40% of blue, green and red light, respectively, whereas parietin screened 81, 27 and 1% of these wavelength ranges. Removal of atranorin caused similar levels of increased photoinhibition for P. aipolia in blue, green and red light, whereas parietin-deficient thalli of X. parietina exhibited increased photoinhibition with decreasing wavelengths. Atranorin possibly prevents water from entering the spaces between the hyphae in the cortex. The air-filled cavities with white atranorin crystals reflect excess light, whereas the yellow compound parietin absorbs excess light. Thereby, both atranorin and parietin play significant photoprotective roles for symbiotic green algae, but with compound-specific screening mechanisms.

Active gibberellin (GA(1)) is an important mediator of thermoperiodic growth in pea. Plants grown under lower day than night temperature (negative DIF) elongate less and have reduced levels of GA(1) compared with plants grown at higher day than night temperature (positive DIF). By comparing the wild type (WT) and the elongated DELLA mutant la cry(s), this study has examined the effect of impaired GA signalling on thermoperiodic growth, photosynthesis, and respiration in pea. In the WT a negative DIF treatment reduced stem mass ratio and increased both root mass ratio and leaf mass ratio (dry weight of specific tissue related to total plant dry weight). Leaf, root and stem mass ratios of la cry(s) were not affected by DIF. Under negative DIF, specific leaf area (projected leaf area per unit leaf dry mass), biomass, and chlorophyll content of WT and la cry(s) plants were reduced. Young, expanding leaves of plants grown under negative DIF had reduced leaf area-based photosynthetic capacity. However, the highest photosynthetic electron transport rate was found in fully expanded leaves of WT plants grown under negative DIF. Negative DIF increased night respiration and was similar for both genotypes. It is concluded that GA signalling is not a major determinant of leaf area-based photosynthesis or respiration and that reduced dry weight of plants grown under negative DIF is caused by a GA-mediated reduction of photosynthetic stem and leaf tissue, reduced photosynthesis of young, expanding leaves, and reduced growth caused by low temperature in the photoperiod.

Herbivore-deterrent depsidones in the epiphytic lichen Lobaria pulmonaria were quantified after a 104-day exposure to indigenous lichen-feeding mollusc communities in broadleaved deciduous forests in southeastern Norway. Controls and acetone-rinsed living thalli were transplanted under open and shaded tree canopies. Rinsed thalli had their depsidone concentration reduced to 36% of the pre-rinsing level, which is below the level needed to deter grazing molluscs. Grazing did not raise the concentration of depsidones beyond the level occurring in control to which molluscs had no access. Inducible responses were not detected in controls nor in acetone-rinsed thalli. Depsidone resynthesis was negligible in acetone-rinsed thalli regardless of grazing and/or light regimes. Our results suggest that C-based depsidones represent a constitutive type of herbivore defence in L. pulmonaria. A constitutive defence is probably an advantage for stress-tolerant slow-growing lichens inhabiting habitats with a constant presence of generalist invertebrate herbivores.

In order to investigate the relationship between environmental conditions and vegetative growth and reproductive development in the strawberry, freshly rooted runner plants of the cultivar ‘Sonata’ were grown in a phytotron at temperatures of 12, 18 and 24 °C and photoperiods of 10 h short day (SD) and 20 h long day (LD) for 31 d and harvested at 10 d intervals. Plant dry weight and leaf area increases were exponential versus time, giving a linear regression with the natural log (ln). This rendered the relative growth rate (RGR) constant over time at each environmental condition. Over the entire 31 d growth period, the RGR increased linearly with increasing temperature across the range of temperatures with a further 10–13% enhancement by LD. A maximum RGR value of 0.077 g/g/d was determined in LD at 24 °C. Increases in the RGR was driven by a combined increase in net assimilation rate (NAR) and leaf area ratio (LAR) and was associated with an increased allocation of dry matter production into leaves and less into crowns and roots. Because of this, the shoot/root ratio increased consistently with increasing temperature and photoperiod, which was also associated with a significant increase in the tissue C/N concentration ratio. Low temperature promoted starch accumulation markedly in all parts of the plants, with a further enhancement by LD conditions, while the concentrations of soluble sugars were less affected by the climatic environment. Forcing of plants exposed to the various growth conditions for 31 d showed that all plants at 12 and 18 °C and 80% of those at 24 °C had initiated flowers in SD, whereas none had initiated flowers in LD regardless of temperature conditions. All these results demonstrate an opposite environmental relationship between vegetative growth and reproductive development in the strawberry.

Summary • Induction of the pigments parietin and melanin by specific wavelength ranges of solar radiation was studied in two widespread foliose lichens: the ubiquitous suntolerant Xanthoria parietina , from which the orange parietin can be extracted in living thalli by acetone, and naturally melanin-free shade-adapted specimens of the old forest species Lobaria pulmonaria . • Parietin-free X. parietina and melanin-free L. pulmonaria were exposed to solar radiation in the field under filter foils transmitting or absorbing natural UV-radiation (< 400 nm). Synthesis of both pigments depended on the presence of UV-radiation. • A growth chamber experiment showed that the induction of parietin and melanin synthesis required the presence of UV-B (280‐320 nm). UV-A (320‐400 nm) induced a very small synthesis only, whereas photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was not inductive. Melanins and parietin were only synthesized in thalli being hydrated during UV-exposures, suggesting that induction required active metabolism. • The photosystem II (PSII) of X. parietina was not adversely affected by any applied radiation treatment, regardless of the hydration status during exposure, whereas L. pulmonaria was susceptible both to high PAR- and UV-irradiances in the desiccated state.

This growth chamber experiment evaluates how temperature and humidity regimes shape soluble carbohydrate pools and growth rates in lichens with different photobionts. We assessed soluble carbohydrates, relative growth rates (RGRs) and relative thallus area growth rates (RTA GRs) in Parmelia sulcata (chlorolichen), Peltigera canina (cyanolichen) and Peltigera aphthosa (cephalolichen) cultivated for 14 d (150 μmol m(-2) s(-1) ; 12-h photoperiod) at four day : night temperatures (28 : 23°C, 20 : 15°C, 13 : 8°C, 6 : 1°C) and two hydration regimes (hydration during the day, dry at night; hydration day : night). The major carbohydrates were mannitol (cephalolichen), glucose (cyanolichen) and arabitol (chlorolichen). Mannitol occurred in all species. During cultivation, total carbohydrate pools decreased in cephalo-/cyanolichens, but increased in the chlorolichen. Carbohydrates varied less than growth with temperature and humidity. All lichens grew rapidly, particularly at 13 : 8°C. RGRs and RTA GRs were significantly higher in lichens hydrated for 24 h than for 12 h. Strong photoinhibition occurred in cephalo- and cyanolichens kept in cool dry nights, resulting in positive relationships between RGR and dark-adapted photosystem II (PSII) efficiency (Fv /Fm ). RGR increased significantly with the photobiont-specific carbohydrate pools within all species. Average RGR peaked in the chlorolichen lowest in total and photobiont carbohydrates. Nocturnal hydration improved recovery from photoinhibition and/or enhanced conversion rates of photosynthates into growth.

Leaf chlorophyll content may be used as an indirect indicator of crop nitrogen status. Chlorophyll meter values (SPAD values) taken with the Minolta SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter in the shade plantOxalis acetosellaL. and in winter wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) varied by 15 and 8%, respectively, with variation in irradiance. The lowest SPAD-values were measured at high irradiance. During a natural night-day-night cycle SPAD values for winter wheat were lowest in the middle of the day, highest at low irradiance at dusk and dawn and intermediate in darkness before dawn and after dusk. The results indicate that irradiance during measurement should be considered when using the Minolta SPAD-502 chlorophyll meter for the estimation of crop N-status.

Pendulous lichens dominate canopies of boreal forests, with dark Bryoria species in the upper canopy vs. light Alectoria and Usnea species in lower canopy. These genera offer important ecosystem services such as winter forage for reindeer and caribou. The mechanism behind this niche separation is poorly understood. We tested the hypothesis that species-specific sunscreening fungal pigments protect underlying symbiotic algae differently against high light, and thus shape the vertical canopy gradient of epiphytes. Three pale species with the reflecting pigment usnic acid (Alectoria sarmentosa, Usnea dasypoga, U. longissima) and three with dark, absorbing melanins (Bryoria capillaris, B. fremontii, B. fuscescens) were compared. We subjected the lichens to desiccation stress with and without light, and assessed their performance with chlorophyll fluorescence. Desiccation alone only affected U. longissima. By contrast, light in combination with desiccation caused photoinhibitory damage in all species. Usnic lichens were significantly more susceptible to light during desiccation than melanic ones. Thus, melanin is a more efficient light-screening pigment than usnic acid. Thereby, the vertical gradient of pendulous lichens in forest canopies is consistent with a shift in type and functioning of sunscreening pigments, from high-light-tolerant Bryoria in the upper to susceptible Alectoria and Usnea in the lower canopy.

This study investigates how hydration during light and dark periods influences growth in two epiphytic old forest lichens, the green algal Lobaria pulmonaria and the cyanobacterial L. scrobiculata. The lichens were cultivated in growth chambers for 14 days (200 μmol m(-1) s(-2); 12 h photoperiod) at four temperature regimes (25/20 °C, 21/16 °C, 13/8 °C, and 6/1 °C; day/night temperatures) and two hydration regimes (12 h day-time hydration; 12 h day-time + 12 h night-time hydration). Growth was highly dynamic, showing that short-term growth experiments in growth cabinets have a high, but largely unexplored potential in functional lichen studies. The highest measured growth rates were not far from the maximal dry matter gain estimated from published net photosynthetic CO2 uptake data. For the entire data set, photobiont type, temperature, hydration regime and specific thallus mass accounted for 46.6 % of the variation in relative growth rate (RGR). Both species showed substantially higher relative growth rates based on both biomass (RGR) and thallus area (RTAGR) when they were hydrated day and night compared to hydration in light only. Chronic photoinhibition was substantial in thalli hydrated only during the day time and kept at the highest and lowest temperature regimes, resulting in exponential increases in RGR with increasing maximal PSII efficiency (F v/F m) in both species. However, the depression in F v/F m was stronger for the cyanolichen than for the cephalolichen at extreme temperatures. The growth-stimulating effect of night-time hydration suggests that nocturnal metabolic activity improves recovery of photoinhibition and/or enhances the conversion rate of photosynthates into thallus extension.

The optimal defense theory (ODT) deals with defensive compounds improving fitness of a particular organism. It predicts that these compounds are allocated in proportion to the risk for a specific plant tissue being attacked and this tissue's value for plant fitness. As the benefit of defense cannot easily be measured in plants, the empirical evidence for ODT is limited. However, lichens are unique in the sense that their carbon-based secondary compounds can nondestructively be removed or reduced in concentration by acetone rinsing. By using such an extraction protocol, which is lethal to plants, we have tested the ODT by studying lichens instead of plants as photosynthetically active organisms. Prior to acetone rinsing, we found five times higher concentration of meta-scrobiculin in the reproductive parts (soralia) of Lobaria scrobiculata compared to somatic parts of this foliose epiphytic lichen species. At this stage, the lichen-feeding snail Cochlodina laminata avoided the soralia. However, after removal of secondary compounds, the snail instead preferred the soralia. In this way, we have successfully shown that grazing pattern inversely reflects the partitioning of the secondary compounds that have a documented deterring effect. Thus our study provides strong and novel evidence for the ODT.

Photoperiod extension with weak include from 8 to 24 h stimulated relative growth rate (RGR) of Poa alpina up to 20%. The response was greatest in young plants at low temperatures. The leaf area ratio (LAR) increased by about 50% which more than compensated for a reduction in net assimilation rate (NAR) by about 20%. The effect of daylength extension on RGR was similar for an arctic ecotype of P. alpina from Svalbard, an alpine ecotype from southern Norway and a borealtemperate ecotype from southern Norway. The main changes in the growth parameters occurred over the 13 to 17 h photoperiod range in P. alpina from both Svalbard and Rondane, although plants at Svalbard are exposed to midnight sun throughout their growing season. The ecotype of P. alpina from southern Norway had fewer tillers and allocated less dry matter to the roots than the two other ecotypes.

Relationships between thallus size and growth variables were analysed for the foliose Lobaria pulmonaria and the pendulous Usnea longissima with the aim of elucidating their morphogenesis and the factors determining thallus area (A) versus biomass (dry weight (DW) gain. Size and growth data originated from a factorial transplantation experiment that included three boreal climate zones (Atlantic, suboceanic and continental), each with three successional forest stands (clear-cut, young and old). When A was replaced by the estimated photobiont layer area in an area-DW scatterplot including all thalli (n = 1080), the two separate species clusters merged into one, suggesting similar allocation patterns between photobionts and mycobionts across growth forms. During transplantation, stand-specific water availability boosted area gain in foliose transplants, consistent with a positive role of water in fungal expansion. In pendulous lichens, A gain greatly exceeded DW gain, particularly in small transplants. The A gain in U. longissima increased with increasing DW:A ratio, consistent with a reallocation of carbon, presumably mobilized from the dense central chord. Pendulous lichens with cylindrical photobiont layers harvest light from all sides. Rapid and flexible three-dimensional A gain allows the colonization of spaces between canopy branches to utilize temporary windows of light in a growing canopy. Foliose lichens with a two-dimensional photobiont layer have more coupled A and DW gains.

Summary • This study analysed relationships between secondary chemistry, lichen growth rates and external habitat factors for two groups of UV-B-absorbing secondary compounds in the lichen Lobaria pulmonaria in order to test some hypotheses on their formation and function. • Medullary depsidones and cortical melanins were quantified in thalli transplanted to three successional forest stands (shaded young forest, open old forest, sun-exposed clear-cut area) and subjected to different watering regimes (spraying with water, water + nitrogen, no spraying). Growth rates were already known. • The total concentration of all seven depsidones was constant across the entire range of growth rates and sun exposures, showing that these depsidones serve functions other than photoprotection. Thalli from the well-lit transplantation sites had the highest synthesis of melanins. Within each forest type there was a trade-off between growth and melanin synthesis. Melanins and photosynthetic acclimation enhanced survival on a subsequent exposure to high light intensity, despite excessive temperatures resulting from higher absorption of solar energy in melanic thalli relative to pale thalli. • In conclusion, the highly responsive melanic pigments play a photoprotective role in light acclimation, whereas the constant amount of depsidones across a wide spectrum of growth ranges and irradiances is consistent with herbivore defence functions.

This study aims to assess the photoprotective potential of desiccation-induced curling in the light-susceptible old forest lichen Lobaria pulmonaria by using chlorophyll fluorescence imaging. Naturally curled thalli showed less photoinhibition-induced limitations in primary processes of photosynthesis than artificially flattened specimens during exposures to 450 micromol m-2 s-1 in the laboratory after both 12- (medium dose treatment) and 62-h duration (high dose treatment). Thallus areas shaded by curled lobes during light exposure showed unchanged values of measured chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (FV/FM, PhiPS II), whereas non-shaded parts of curled thalli, as well as the mean for the entire flattened thalli, showed photoinhibitory limitation after light treatments. Furthermore, the chlorophyll fluorescence imaging showed that the typical small-scale reticulated ridges on the upper side of L. pulmonaria caused a spatial, small-scale reduction in damage due to minor shading. Severe dry-state photoinhibition readily occurred in flattened and light-treated L. pulmonaria, although the mechanisms for such damage in a desiccated and inactive stage are not well known. Natural curling is one strategy to reduce the chance for serious photoinhibition in desiccated L. pulmonaria thalli during high light exposures.

This study aims to assess biomass and area growth of 600 thalli of the old forest lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria, transplanted to three successional boreal forest stands with (1) natural rainfall regime, (2) additional moistening during dry days, and (3) additional moistening with added nutrients. Mean biomass growth during 100 days varied from 8.3% in the dark young spruce forest to 23.1% in the clear-cut area, with the old forest in between (16.0%). Additional moistening did not enhance lichen growth, probably because the transplantation period was wet. Nutrient additions slightly increased area growth compared to artificial water additions only. Growth was determined by a combination of external (forest stand, site factors) and internal factors (chlorophyll content, biomass per area). Transplants acclimated to high light by increasing thickness and chlorophyll a/b-ratio. Some visible bleaching and a strong positive correlation between chlorophyll content per area and lichen growth in clear-cuts suggest some high light-induced chlorophyll degradation. We believe that biomass growth and natural occurrence of L. pulmonaria is controlled by a delicate balance between light availability and desiccation risk, and that the species is confined to old forests due to a physiological trade-off between growth potential and fatal desiccation damage, both of which increase with increasing light. The discrepancy between potential and realized ecological niches is probably caused by a long-term risk to be killed in open habitats by high light during long periods with no rain.

1. Exposure to high light intensities (250 and 1000 μmol photons m -2 s -l ) caused a rapid and strong decline in F v /F M in hydrated lichens. However, all species except the old-forest indicators Lobaria pulmonaria and Evernia divaricata recovered original values of F V /F M within 2-3 days at 18 °C. 2. Lichen indicators of long ecological continuity, especially within the threatened Lobarion community, were most susceptible to high light, also in evidence by increased chlorophyll degradation in hydrated thalli with increasing PFDs. Usneion species showed a moderate level of photoinhibition; those members of the family Parmeliaceae that are ubiquitous were the most resistant. 3. A reduction in temperature from 18 to 9 °C during high-light treatment caused a larger and more permanent reduction in F v /F M in hydrated thalli of Lobaria pulmonaria than of Parmelia sulcata. 4. F V /F M was permanently reduced in air-dry thalli subjected to high PFD; irreversible and very low levels of F v /F M developed within 2-3 days of high-light exposure for tested Lobarion species measured after 48-h recovery in moist conditions at low light. Ubiquitous Parmeliaceae species maintained fairly high F V /F M throughout the 7-day exposure; Usneion species were intermediate. The lichen indicators of long ecological continuity showed a large and highly significant chlorophyll degradation, whereas the remaining species had some kind of protecting mechanisms. 5. Clear-fellings of forests are likely to be detrimental for presently declining lichens of ancient forests by causing a sudden increase in PFDs on remaining lichen thalli.
