7. Effect of the Post‐Annealing Temperature on the Interfacial Reaction Between a High TC Superconductor and Topological Insulator.

Abstract

This work reports the formation of a heterojunction composed of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (Tl‐2212) and Bi2Se3 as the high critical temperature superconductor and topological insulator, respectively. The Bi2Se3 film is deposited on the Tl‐2212 by a chemical mechanical polishing process. Due to the rough surface of Tl‐2212, the treated Tl‐2212 is then subjected to post‐annealing at various temperatures. This temperature does not affect the formation of the interfacial layer at the heterojunction; however, an improved layered crystal structure of the Bi2Se3 film is observed at 500 °C. The in‐depth profile of the relative atomic concentration indicates the diffusion of Cu and Tl into the Bi2Se3 film with the Ba diffusion being closer to the interfacial layer. At 500 °C, Cu atoms are more actively diffused into the Bi2Se3 film, thus blocking Tl diffusion, and improving the layered crystal structure of the film. The density functional theory calculations reveal that the lowest formation energy of the Cu vacancy is when Bi2Se3 is in contact with Tl‐2212, which results in the diffusion of Cu atoms from Tl‐2212, thus transforming the interstitial Cu atoms into the film. These atoms have an n‐type doping effect and prefer intercalating at a vdW gap deep inside the layered Bi2Se3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Hydrometallurgical gold recovery processes play a pivotal role in the gold mining industry, contributing to more than 90% of global gold production. Among the array of techniques available, the Merrill–Crowe process, adsorption, ion exchange, and solvent extraction are central in extracting gold from leach solutions. While the Merrill–Crowe process and gold complex adsorption onto activated carbon represent historical cornerstones, their inherent limitations have prompted the emergence of more recent innovations in ion exchange and solvent extraction, offering enhanced selectivity, control, and sustainability. The evolution of modern organic chemistry has significantly influenced the progress of ion exchange technology, mainly through the introduction of advanced polymer matrix synthetic resins. At the same time, novel solvents tailored to gold complex interactions have revitalized ion exchange and solvent extraction. Introducing ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents has also added a new dimension to efforts to improve gold extraction metallurgy. This paper reviews these cutting-edge developments and their potential to revolutionize the hydrometallurgical gold recovery process, addressing the pressing need for improved efficiency and environmental responsibility. 9. Beyond mourning and melancholia : women and Ireland as Beckett's lost others

Abstract

Beckett's female characterization in his later works is, in marked contrast to his earlier work, broadly in sympathy with the notion of 'feminine' style and feminist concerns. Yet in his earlier texts, the female is grotesque, devouring, sexually provocative, and silenced. It can be argued that Beckett's representations of the female and Ireland intersect, and change as his relationship to Ireland and an Anglo-Irish tradition changes. Proposing that Beckett's self-imposed exile has influenced such changes, this thesis, using a psychoanalytic framework, traces discourses of mourning, melancholia and abjection in his works, and demonstrates how Ireland and women are often the objects of loss in the psychoanalytic model. By exploring the correlations between the representations of Ireland and the female throughout Beckett's oeuvre, this thesis aims to shed new light on Beckett's literary practice as well as contributing to the fields of Irish and feminist studies.

12. Developing Creativity through Collaborative Problem Solving

Abstract

This paper discusses an alternative approach for developing problem solving experiences for students. The major argument is that students can develop their creativity by engaging in collaborative problem solving activities in which they apply a variety of mathematical methods creatively to solve problems. The argument is supported by: considering why developing creativity is a worthwhile adventure for students; describing why collaborative problem solving is a unique endeavor in which to engage students more fluidly and less compartmentally; and discussing how students can become skilled at thinking logically and creatively about mathematics content through their engagement in collaborative problem solving tasks.

Abstract

Recent advances in immunotherapy against cancer underscore the importance of T lymphocytes and tumor microenvironment, but few vaccines targeting cancer have been approved likely due in part to the dearth of common tumor antigens, insufficient immunogenicity and the evolution of immune evasion mechanisms during the progression to malignancy. Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are the primary etiologic agents of cervical cancer and progression from persistent HPV-infection to cervical intraepithelial lesions and eventually cancer requires persistent expression of the oncoproteins E6 and E7. This offers the opportunity to specifically target these virus-specific antigens for vaccine-induced clearance of infected cells before cancers develop. Here we have evaluated the immunogenicity of Adenovirus types 26 and 35 derived vectors expressing a fusion of HPV16 E6 and E7 oncoproteins after intramuscular and/or intravaginal immunization in mice. The adenovirus vectors were shown to transduce an intact cervicovaginal epithelium. Intramuscular prime followed by intravaginal boost maximized the induction and trafficking of HPV-specific CD8(+) T cells producing IFN-γ and TNF-α to the cervicovaginal tract. Importantly, the cervicovaginal CD8(+) T cells expressed CD69 and CD103, hallmarks of intraepithelial tissue resident memory CD8(+) T cells. This prime/boost strategy targeting heterologous locations also induced circulating HPV-specific CD8(+) T cell responses. Our study prompts further evaluation of intravaginal immunization with adenoviral vectors expressing modified E6 and E7 antigens for therapeutic vaccination against persistent HPV infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Abstract

This analysis of elementary mathematics instruction in South Korea examines local successes while spotlighting global concerns of education professionals. Findings in this research reveal specific domains of mathematics knowledge that best influence students' understanding, retaining, and owning of content. Aspects of teacher knowledge studied go beyond mastery of the subject matter, extending to how educators impart knowledge and how learners develop productive relationships with information. These results suggest possibilities for future directions in teacher training, certification, and career development. Among the topics covered: Models and methods for studying mathematical knowledge for teaching. Teachers' knowledge for teaching mathematics: a history of the research. Five categories of elementary mathematics teachers' knowledge and how they interrelate in teaching. Uses of different types of educational knowledge in lesson planning, classroom teaching, and evaluating student work. The role of pedagogical procedure in establishing pedagogical content knowledge. The social context of South Korea's National Mathematics Curriculum. 34. A review on the metallurgical recycling of vanadium from slags: towards a sustainable vanadium production

Abstract

The critical applications of vanadium in metallurgical field and the growth in commercialization of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) have led to the increased demand of vanadium. It is thus important to ensure the sustainability of vanadium production. Vanadium bearing slags, the solid byproducts in iron- and steel-making plants, are the principal source of vanadium production, accounting for more than 69% of total vanadium in terms ofthe raw material types. Academic researches and engineering investigations have been addressed to develop such metallurgical processesfor treating the vanadium bearing slags. This article presents a comprehensive review on the metallurgical treatments of vanadium bearing slags. The composition and phase/mineralogical characterization of vanadium bearing slags from various sources are given. Literature review shows that the vanadium bearing slags have been traditionally treated through the roasting-assisted leaching with the recent efforts of integrating the state-of-the arts technologies in extractive metallurgy and developing direct leaching methodologies. Some promising methods are worth discussing and quite encouraging, and expected to be the future focuses of this area. Discussion also highlights the separation of vanadium from silica, phosphorus and chromium as the major interfering elements/metal in the leach solutions of vanadium slags.Recommendation is made for taking up future works in order to develop a sustainable metallurgical process for vanadium bearing slag.

35. Successful full-term delivery after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest during the second trimester of pregnancy: a case report.

Abstract

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in pregnancy is extremely rare. In this case report, a 43-year-old female patient at 24.0 weeks of gestation collapsed outside her home after cardiac arrest. The paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation with defibrillation for ventricular fibrillation. Spontaneous circulation was achieved after 19 minutes. The fetus was stable during postarrest care. The patient exhibited high blood pressure with seizure-like symptoms for 2 days afterwards, which resolved with magnesium sulfate. She gradually recovered and returned to her daily activities while on treatment with beta blockers for cardiomyopathy and premature ventricular contractions until delivery. At 37.2 weeks of gestation, she underwent elective Cesarean section under spinal anesthesia. The baby weighed 2.55 kg and did not present with any complications. Here, we report a case of successful full-term delivery in a patient who underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation for sudden cardiac arrest during the second trimester of pregnancy.
