We constructed a transportable 40Ca+ optical clock (with an estimated minimum systematic shift uncertainty of 1.3*10^(-17) and a stability of 5*10^(-15)/sqrt{tau} ) that can operate outside the laboratory. We transported it from the Innovation Academy for Precision Measurement Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan to the National Institute of Metrology, Beijing. The absolute frequency of the 729 nm clock transition was measured for up to 35 days by tracing its frequency to the second of International System of Units. Some improvements were implemented in the measurement process, such as the increased effective up-time of 91.3 % of the 40Ca+ optical clock over a 35-day-period, the reduced statistical uncertainty of the comparison between the optical clock and hydrogen maser, and the use of longer measurement times to reduce the uncertainty of the frequency traceability link. The absolute frequency measurement of the 40Ca+ optical clock yielded a value of 411042129776400.26 (13) Hz with an uncertainty of 3.2*10^(-16), which is reduced by a factor of 1.7 compared with our previous results. As a result of the increase in the operating rate of the optical clock, the accuracy of 35 days of absolute frequency measurement can be comparable to the best results of different institutions in the world based on different optical frequency measurements., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Here we present a liquid nitrogen-cooled Ca^+ optical clock with an overall systematic uncertainty of 3*10^-18. In contrast with the room-temperature Ca^+ optical clock that we have reported previously, the temperature of the blackbody radiation (BBR) shield in vacuum has been reduced to 82(5) K using liquid nitrogen. An ion trap with a lower heating rate and improved cooling lasers were also introduced. This allows cooling the ion temperature to the Doppler cooling limit during the clock operation, and the systematic uncertainty due to the ion's secular (thermal) motion is reduced to < 1*10^-18. The uncertainty due to the probe laser light shift and the servo error are also reduced to < 1*10^-19 and 4*10^-19 with the hyper-Ramsey method and the higher-order servo algorithm, respectively. By comparing the output frequency of the cryogenic clock to that of a room-temperature clock, the differential BBR shift between the two was measured with a fractional statistical uncertainty of 7*10^-18. The differential BBR shift was used to calculate the static differential polarizability, and it was found in excellent agreement with our previous measurement with a different method. This work suggests that the BBR shift of optical clocks can be well suppressed in a liquid nitrogen environment. This is advantageous because conventional liquid-helium cryogenic systems for optical clocks are more expensive and complicated. Optical clocks are important for precise measurements in the field of physics. As reported, both the instability and uncertainty of optical lattice clocks are more than two orders of magnitude smaller than those of the best microwave clocks. Therefore, in the near future, optical clocks could be used to redefine the second. Nevertheless, an optical clock with reliability comparable to microwave clocks has not been achieved thus far. In this paper, we compared the frequencies of two Ca^+ optical clocks that were nearly continuously operated for 31 days. Through the comparison experiment, the frequency stability of a single clocks was found to be 6.3×10^-18 at an averaging time of 520 000 s and 7.9×10^-18 at averaging time of 262000 s, while the operating uptime rate reached more than 90% in the period of around 5 days. Thus, our experiment demonstrated that it is possible to increase the stability of single-ion optical clocks to the 10^-18 level, while still maintaining quasi-continuous operation with a high operating rate. This result further confirms that optical clocks can potentially be used to redefine the second.

Highly charged ions (HCIs) are promising candidates for the next generation of atomic clocks, owing to their tightly bound electron cloud, which significantly suppresses the common environmental disturbances to the quantum oscillator. Here we propose and pursue an experimental strategy that, while focusing on various HCIs of a single atomic element, keeps the number of candidate clock transitions as large as possible. Following this strategy, we identify four adjacent charge states of nickel HCIs that offer as many as six optical transitions. Experimentally, we demonstrated the essential capability of producing these ions in the low-energy compact Shanghai-Wuhan Electron Beam Ion Trap. We measured the wavelengths of four magnetic-dipole ($M$1) and one electric-quadrupole ($E$2) clock transitions with an accuracy of several ppm with a novel calibration method; two of these lines were observed and characterized for the first time in controlled laboratory settings. Compared to the earlier determinations, our measurements improved wavelength accuracy by an order of magnitude. Such measurements are crucial for constraining the range of laser wavelengths for finding the "needle in a haystack" narrow lines. In addition, we calculated frequencies and quality factors, evaluated sensitivity of these six transitions to the hypothetical variation of the electromagnetic fine structure constant $\alpha$ needed for fundamental physics applications. We argue that all the six transitions in nickel HCIs offer intrinsic immunity to all common perturbations of quantum oscillators, and one of them has the projected fractional frequency uncertainty down to the remarkable level of 10$^{-19}$., Comment: To be published in Physical Review A

The hyperfine structures of the $2{^{3}S}_{1}$ states of the $^{6}{\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ and $^{7}{\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ ions are investigated theoretically to extract the Zemach radii of the $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ nuclei by comparing with precision measurements. The obtained Zemach radii are larger than the previous values of Puchalski and Pachucki [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 243001 (2013)] and disagree with them by about 1.5 and 2.2 standard deviations for $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$, respectively. Furthermore, our Zemach radius of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ differs significantly from the nuclear physics value, derived from the nuclear charge and magnetic radii [Phys. Rev. A 78, 012513 (2008)] by more than $6\ensuremath{\sigma}$, indicating an anomalous nuclear structure for $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$. The conclusion that the Zemach radius of $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ is about 40% larger than that of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ is confirmed. The obtained Zemach radii are used to calculate the hyperfine splittings of the $2{^{3}P}_{J}$ states of $\text{ }{^{6,7}\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$, where an order of magnitude improvement over the previous theory has been achieved for $^{7}{\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$.

Edge states emerge in diverse areas of science, offering promising opportunities for the development of future electronic or optoelectronic devices, sound and light propagation control in acoustics and photonics. Previous experiments on edge states in photonics were carried out mostly in linear regimes, but the current belief is that nonlinearity introduces more striking features into physics of edge states, leading to the formation of edge solitons, optical isolation, making possible stable lasing in such states, to name a few. Here we report the observation of edge solitons at the zigzag edge of a reconfigurable photonic graphene lattice created via the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in an atomic vapor cell with controllable nonlinearity. To obtain edge solitons, Raman gain is introduced to compensate strong absorption experienced by the edge state during propagation. Our observations may open the way for future experimental exploration of topological photonics on this nonlinear, reconfigurable platform., Edge states are excitations existing at the boundary of truncated periodic materials with specific spectral degeneracies, and their properties are enriched when materials possess a nonlinear response. Here, the authors provide experimental evidence of edge soliton formation in a nonlinear photonic graphene lattice induced in an atomic vapour cell.

Laser frequency stabilization plays an important role in high-precision spectroscopic measurements. Since high-accuracy commercial wavemeters became available, wavemeter-based frequency stabilization has found a broad application due to its convenience, flexibility, and wide applicability. However, such stabilization schemes frequently suffer from long-term drift, since the accuracy of the wavelength measurement of a wavemeter is affected by ambient temperature fluctuation. In this work, we demonstrate that such long-term drift can be suppressed by regularly calibrating the frequency of a wavemeter-locked laser utilizing an optical frequency comb, which has much better long-term stability. Under this dual-referenced locking scheme, the Allan deviation is reduced to 3.5 E-12 at 4000 s for a fiber laser operated at 548 nm, which when used in the optical Ramsey spectroscopic measurement of 7 L i + , reduces the standard deviation by as much as 40%, compared to the case when only wavemeter locking is applied.

A low-energy, compact and superconducting electron beam ion trap (the Shanghai-Wuhan EBIT or SW-EBIT) for extraction of highly charged ions is presented. The magnetic field in the central drift tube of the SW-EBIT is approximately 0.21 T produced by a pair of high-temperature superconducting coils. The electron-beam energy of the SW-EBIT is in the range of 30-4000 eV, and the maximum electron-beam current is up to 9 mA. Acting as a source of highly charged ions, the ion-beam optics for extraction is integrated, including an ion extractor and an einzel lens. A Wien filter is then used to measure the charge-state distribution of the extracted ions. In this work, the tungsten ions below the charge state of 15 have been produced, extracted, and analyzed. The charge-state distributions and spectra in the range of 530-580 nm of tungsten ions have been measured simultaneously with the electron-beam energy of 279 eV and 300 eV, which preliminarily indicates that the 549.9 nm line comes from $W^{14+}$., This article has been published on Review of Scientific Instruments. In this paper, we present a detailed method for rapidly and effectively loading a single 40Ca+ ion into a miniature linear Paul trap. Calcium atoms are generated by laser ablation, and the single ion is loaded and specific isotopes are selected by a two-step photo-ionization method. Compared to the traditional photo-ionization method in which atoms are typically emitted from a resistively heated oven, the advantages of laser ablation are that it can be precisely controlled, it can effectively avoid the problem of fluxed calcium deposition on the trap electrodes, and it restricts the generation of dark ions, which can influence atomic-precision spectroscopy measurements. With its short loading time, it is possible to load an ion in few seconds with the appropriate parameters. The technique of laser ablation has been applied to generate several species of atoms and ions at present, it will potentially benefit in the studies of optical frequency standards, quantum simulation and quantum information processing in an ultra-high vacuum condition and cryogenic system.

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of magic wavelengths and determine the ratio of oscillator strengths for a single trapped ion. For the first time, two magic wavelengths near 396 nm for the Ca-40(+) clock transition are measured simultaneously with high precision. By tuning the applied laser to an intermediate wavelength between transitions 4s(1/2) -> 4p(1/2) and 4s(1/2) -> 4p(3/2), the sensitivity of the clock transition Stark shift to the oscillator strengths is greatly enhanced. Furthermore, with the measured magic wavelengths, we determine the ratio of the oscillator strengths with a deviation of less than 0.5%. Our experimental method may be applied to measure magic wavelengths for other ion clock transitions. Promisingly, the measurement of these magic wavelengths paves the way to building all-optical trapped ion clocks.

A potential scheme is proposed to generate complete sets of entangled photons in the context of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). The scheme includes twice interactions of atoms with cavities, in which the first interaction is made in two-mode optical cavities and the second one exists in a microwave cavity. In the optical cavities the atoms are resonant with the cavity modes, while the detuned interaction of the atoms with a single-mode of the microwave cavity is driven by a classical field. We have experimentally implemented remote state preparation (RSP) of a qubit from a hydrogen to a carbon nucleus in molecules of carbon-13 labeled chloroform $^{13}$CHCl$_{3}$ over interatomic distances using liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. Full RSP of a special ensemble of qubits, i.e., a qubit chosen from equatorial and polar great circles on a Bloch sphere with Pati's scheme, was achieved with one cbit communication. Such a RSP scheme can be generalized to prepare a large number of qubit states and may be used in other quantum information processing and quantum computing., 10 pages,5 PS figures

Magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is shown to be a promising technique for implementing quantum computing. The theory underlying the principles of quantum computing with nuclear spin systems undergoing MAS is formulated in the framework of formalized quantum Floquet theory. The procedures for realizing state labeling, state transformation and coherence selection in Floquet space are given. It suggests that by this method, the largest number of qubits can easily surpass that achievable with other techniques. Unlike other modalities proposed for quantum computing, this method enables one to adjust the dimension of the working state space, meaning the number of qubits can be readily varied. We investigate the energy spectrum for hybrid mechanical systems described by non-parity-symmetric quantum Rabi models. A set of analytical solutions in terms of the confluent Heun functions and their analytical energy spectrum are obtained. The analytical energy spectrum includes regular and exceptional parts, which are both confirmed by direct numerical simulation. The regular part is determined by the zeros of the Wronskian for a pair of analytical solutions. The exceptional part is relevant to the isolated exact solutions and its energy eigenvalues are obtained by analyzing the truncation conditions for the confluent Heun functions. By analyzing the energy eigenvalues for exceptional points, we obtain the analytical conditions for the energy-level-crossings, which correspond to two-fold energy degeneracy., 17 pages, 2 figures

The experimental study at Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM), Chinese Academy of Scienses (CAS) on the precision spetroscopy based on single trapped Ca+ ion is described in this paper. A single Ca+ ion is trapped in a miniature Paul trap and laser cooled to Lamb-Dicke regime, and the ion can be trapped more than 2 months. The linewidth of the 729 nm laser for probing the Ca+ 4 s 2 S 1/2-3 d 2 D 5/2 clock transition is reduced to lessthan 1 Hz by locked to a super cavity, and the 729 nm laser can be locked more than 1 month continuously. Two similar Ca + ion optical frequency standards are set up for frequency comparison. The systematic uncertainty is evaluated to be ´ 10−17 for both ftrquency standards. The frequency difference of two frequency standards is measured to be 3.0 (5.5) ´ 10−17 within 42 d. The Allan deviation for a single clock is measured to be 1×10−14 τ −1/2 with a 3-d-continuous comparison, the stability for a reaches 7 ´ 10−17 at an averaging time of 20000 s. Meanwhile, the absolute frequency of the Ca+ 4 s 2 S 1/2-3 d 2 D 5/2 clock transition is measured to be 411042129776401.7(1.1) Hz with respect to the SI second through the Global Positioning System (GPSx). The precision spectroscopy experiments are carried out based on the single Ca+ ion system. The magic wavelengths for the Ca+ optical frequency standardare measured to be λ | mj |=1/2=395.7992(7) nm and λ | mj |=3/2=395.7990(7) nm, which agrees with theoretical calculation made by Tang et al. The lifetime of the 3 d 2 D 5/2 is measured to be 1174(10) ms, which is agree with the experimental measurement made by University of Oxford and University of Innsbruck and the recent theoretical calculation made by Sahoo.

We propose how to explore the Franck-Condon (FC) physics via a single ion confined in a spin-dependent potential, formed by the combination of a Paul trap and a magnetic field gradient. The correlation between electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom, called as electron-vibron coupling, is induced by a nonzero gradient. For a sufficiently strong electron-vibron coupling, the FC blockade of low-lying vibronic transitions takes place. We analyze the feasibility of observing the FC physics in a single trapped ion, and demonstrate various potential applications of the ionic FC physics in quantum state engineering and quantum information processing., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate how to carry out universal quantum computation deterministically with free electrons in decoherence-free subspace by using polarizing beam splitters, charge detectors, and single-spin rotations. Quantum information in our case is encoded in spin degrees of freedom of the electron-pairs which construct a decoherence-free subspace. We design building blocks for two noncommutable single-logic-qubit gates and a logic controlled phase gate, based on which a universal and scalable quantum information processing robust to dephasing is available in a deterministic way., 14 pages, 3 figures

A simple scheme is presented to generate N-qubit W states with rf superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in cavity QED through adiabatic passage. Because of the achievable strong coupling for rf SQUID qubits embedded in cavity QED, we can get the desired state with high success probability. Furthermore, the scheme is insensitive to the position inaccuracy of the rf SQUID. Numerical simulation shows that, by using present experimental techniques, we can achieve our scheme with very high success probability, and the fidelity could eventually be unity with the help of dissipation.

Quantum cluster states and entangled state analyzers are essential to measurement-based quantum computing. We propose to generate a quantum cluster-state and to make multipartite entanglement analyzer by using noninteracting free electrons or conduction electrons in quantum dots, based on polarizing beam splitters, charge detectors and single-spin rotations. We check a recent proposal [H. Goto and K. Ichimura Phys. Rev. A 70, 012305 (2004)] for controlled phase gate through adiabatic passage under the influence of spontaneous emission and the cavity decay. We show a modification of above proposal could be used to generate the necessary conditional phase gates in the two-qubit Grover search. Conditioned on no photon leakage either from the atomic excited state or from the cavity mode during the gating period, we numerically analyze the success probability and the fidelity of the two-qubit conditional phase gate by adiabatic passage. The comparison made between our proposed gating scheme and a previous one shows that Goto and Ichimura's scheme is an alternative and feasible way in the optical cavity regime for two-qubit gates and could be generalised in principle to multi-qubit gates., Comment: to appear in J. We propose schemes to create cluster states and W states by many superconducting-quantum-interference-device (SQUID) qubits in cavities under the influence of the cavity decay. Our schemes do not require auxiliary qubits, and the excited levels are only virtually coupled throughout the scheme, which could much reduce the experimental challenge. Complementarity was originally introduced as a qualitative concept for the discussion of properties of quantum mechanical objects that are classically incompatible. More recently, complementarity has become a \emph{quantitative} relation between classically incompatible properties, such as visibility of interference fringes and "which-way" information, but also between purely quantum mechanical properties, such as measures of entanglement. We discuss different complementarity relations for systems of 2-, 3-, or \textit{n} qubits. The spontaneous spin polarization and bifurcation delay in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates coupled with laser or/and radio-frequency pulses are investigated. We find that the bifurcation and the spontaneous spin polarization are determined by both physical parameters and relative phase between two condensates. Through bifurcations, the system enters into the spontaneous spin polarization regime from the Rabi regime. We also find that bifurcation delay appears when the parameter is swept through a static bifurcation point. The macroscopic quantum tunneling between two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) (radio-frequency coupled two-component BECs or two BECs confined in a double-well potential) is mapped onto the tunneling of an uniaxial spin with an applied magnetic field. The tunneling exponent is calculated with an imaginary-time path-integral method. In the limit of low barrier, the dependence of tunneling exponent on the system parameters is obtained, and the crossover temperature from thermal regime to quantum regime is estimated. A quantum circuit is introducted to describe the preparation of a labeled pseudo-pure state by mutiplet-component excitation scheme which has been experimentally implemented on a 4-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance quantum processor. Meanwhile, we theoretically analyze and numerically inverstigate the low-power selective single-pulse implementation of a controlled-rotation gate, which manifests its validity in our experiment. Based on the labeled pseudo-pure state prepared, a 3-qubit Bernstein-Vazirani algorithm has been experimentally demonstrated by spectral implementation. We have experimentally demonstrated the interferometric complementarity, which relates the distinguishability $D$ quantifying the amount of which-way (WW) information to the fringe visibility $V$ characterizing the wave feature of a quantum entity, in a bulk ensemble by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques. We primarily concern on the intermediate cases: partial fringe visibility and incomplete WW information. We propose a quantitative measure of $D$ by an alternative geometric strategy and investigate the relation between $D$ and entanglement. By measuring $D$ and $V$ independently, it turns out that the duality relation $D^{2}+V^{2}=1$ holds for pure quantum states of the markers., Comment: 13 page, 5 PS figures

Based upon our previous works (Eur.Phys.J.D 6, 319(1999); Chin.Phys.Lett. 18, 236(2001)), we develop a classical approach to calculate the high-order harmonic generation of the laser driven atoms and molecules. The Coulomb singularities in the system have been removed by a regularization procedure. Action-angle variables have been used to generate the initial microcanonical distribution which satisfies the inversion symmetry of the system. The numerical simulation show, within a proper laser intensity, a harmonic plateau with only odd harmonics appears. At higher intensities, the spectra become noisier because of the existence of chaos. With further increase in laser intensity, ionization takes place, and the high-order harmonics disappear. Thus chaos introduces noise in the spectra, and ionization suppresses the harmonic generation, with the onset of the ionization follows the onset of chaos., RevTex,18 pages,6 figures

Using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques with three-qubit sample, we have experimentally implemented the highly structured algorithm for the 1-SAT problem proposed by Hogg. A simplified temporal averaging procedure was employed to the three-qubit spin pseudo-pure state. The algorithm was completed with only a single evaluation of structure of the problem and the solutions were found with probability 100%, which outperform both unstructured quantum and the best classical search algorithm., Revtex, 14 pages and 1 table, 4 EPS figures

We introduce the standard distribution width of fitness to characterize the global and individual features of a ecosystem in the Bak-Sneppen evolution model. Through tracking this quantity in evolution, a different hierarchy of avalanche dynamics, $w_{0}$ avalanche is observed. The corresponding gap equation and the self-organized threshold $w_{c}$ are obtained. The critical exponents $\tau ,$ $\gamma $and $\rho $, which describe the behavior of the avalanche size distribution, the average avalanche size and the relaxation to attractor, respectively, are calculated with numerical simulation. A new method of preparing the pseudo-pure state of a spin system for quantum computation in liquid nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was put forward and demonstrated experimentally. Applying appropriately connected line-selective pulses simultaneously and a field gradient pulse techniques we acquired straightforwardly all pseudo-pure states for two qubits in a single experiment much efficiently. The signal intensity with the pseudo-pure state prepared in this way is the same as that of temporal averaging. Our method is suitable for the system with arbitrary numbers of qubits. The highly structured search algorithm proposed by Hogg[Phys.Rev.Lett. 80,2473(1998)] is implemented experimentally for the 1-SAT problem in a single search step by using nuclear magnetic resonance technique with two-qubit sample.
