Search

Many powerful tests of the Standard Model of particle physics and searches for new physics with precision atomic spectroscopy are plagued by our lack of knowledge of nuclear properties. Ideally, such properties may be derived from precise measurements of the most sensitive and theoretically best-understood observables, often found in hydrogen-like systems. While these measurements are abundant for the electric properties of nuclei, they are scarce for the magnetic properties, and precise experimental results are limited to the lightest of nuclei. Here, we focus on $^9$Be which offers the unique possibility to utilize comparisons between different charge states available for high-precision spectroscopy in Penning traps to test theoretical calculations typically obscured by nuclear structure. In particular, we perform the first high-precision spectroscopy of the $1s$ hyperfine and Zeeman structure in hydrogen-like $^9$Be$^{3+}$. We determine its effective Zemach radius with an uncertainty of $500$ ppm, and its bare nuclear magnetic moment with an uncertainty of $0.6$ parts-per-billion (ppb) - uncertainties unmatched beyond hydrogen. Moreover, we compare to measurements conducted on the three-electron charge state $^9$Be$^{+}$, which, for the first time, enables testing the calculation of multi-electron diamagnetic shielding effects of the nuclear magnetic moment at the ppb level. In addition, we test quantum electrodynamics (QED) methods used for the calculation of the hyperfine splitting. Our results serve as a crucial benchmark essential for transferring high-precision results of nuclear magnetic properties across different electronic configurations.

The transition energies of the two $1s$-core-excited soft X-ray lines (dubbed q and r) from $1s^2 2s ^1S_{1/2}$ to the respective upper levels $1s(^{2}S)2s2p(^{3}P) ^{2}P_{3/2}$ and $^{2}P_{1/2}$ of Li-like oxygen, fluorine and neon were measured and calibrated using several nearby transitions of He-like ions. The major remaining source of energy uncertainties in monochromators, the periodic fluctuations produced by imperfect angular encoder calibration, is addressed by a simultaneously running photoelectron spectroscopy measurement. This leads to an improved energy determination of 5 parts per million, showing fair agreement with previous theories as well as with our own, involving a complete treatment of the autoionizing states studied here. Our experimental results translate to an uncertainty of only 1.6\,km/s for the oxygen line qr-blend used to determine the outflow velocities of active galactic nuclei, ten times smaller than previously possible., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The nuclear isomeric state $^{229m}$Th with an exceptionally low excitation energy makes the $^{229}$Th isotope a crucial candidate for nuclear clocks and many other applications. Efficient and controllable production of $^{229m}$Th is essential and still remains a challenge. Here we report a novel approach for efficient production of $^{229m}$Th by the excitation of $^{229}$Th to the above-lying excited state at $29.19$ keV energy via the process of nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC). We show theoretically that the production rate of $^{229m}$Th per nucleus with accessible conditions can be six orders of magnitude larger than the value experimentally demonstrated using $29$-keV synchrotron radiation for this indirect excitation. With the efficient production of $^{229m}$Th, our results identify scenarios, as well as the characteristic NEEC signature with which NEEC events could be unambiguously identified, for a clear experimental identification of the long-sought NEEC phenomenon., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

A method for the generation of ultrarelativistic electron beams with high spin polarization is put forward, where a tightly-focused linearly-polarized ultraintense laser pulse interacts with a nonprepolarized transverse-size-tailored solid target. The radiative spin polarization and angular separation is facilitated by the standing wave formed via the incident and reflected laser pulses at the overdense plasma surface. Strong electron heating caused by transverse instability enhances photon emission in the density spikes injected into the standing wave near the surface. Two groups of electrons with opposite transverse polarization emerge, anti-aligned to the magnetic field, which are angularly separated in the standing wave due to the phase-matched oscillation of the magnetic field and the vector potential. The polarized electrons propelled into the plasma slab, are focused at the exit by the self-generated quasistatic fields. Our particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate the feasibility of highly polarized electrons with a single 10 PW laser beam, e.g. with polarization of 60% and charge of 8 pC selected at energy of 200 MeV within 15 mrad angle and 10% energy spread.

A method to compute the excitation of narrow transitions at hard x-ray energies by short focused x-ray pulses is developed. In particular, the effect of thin-film cavities on the pulse propagation is incorporated via a semi-analytical algorithm requiring the numerical evaluation of only one two-dimensional Fourier transform. We investigate various limiting cases to confirm the reliability of the algorithm. As an application, we show how a focused x-ray pulse propagates in cavity structures utilized in previous theoretical studies and experiments with collimated beams., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Strong excitation of nuclear resonances, particularly of Mo\"ossbauer nuclei, has been a longstanding goal and the advance of novel x-ray sources is promising new options in this regard. Here we map out the necessary experimental conditions for the more general goal of realizing nonlinear optics with nuclei and compare with available technology. In particular, we present a comprehensive theory of nonlinear nuclear excitation in thin-film x-ray cavities by focused x-ray pulses. We thereby identify cavity geometries with broad resonances which allow one to boost the nuclear excitation even at moderately tight focusing., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

A relativistic analytical theory of strong field ionization applicable across the regimes of the deep-tunneling up to the over-barrier ionization (OTBI) is developed, incorporating the effects of the polarization of the atomic bound state and the Stark-shift in an ultrastrong laser field. The theory, in particular, addresses the order of magnitude discrepancy of the ionization yield in the relativistic regime calculated via the numerical solution of the Klein-Gordon equation [B. Hafizi \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. 118, 133201 (2017)] with respect to the state-of-the-art quasiclassical theory of Perelomov-Popov-Terent'ev (PPT) for strong field ionization. The developed theory employs a Keldysh-like approach describing the ionization as an adiabatic quantum jump from the bound state to the continuum at a specific transition time, where the improved performance is achieved by accounting for the bound state distortion in the laser field. In the nonrelativistic limit, our theory reproduces the well-known fit to the numerical calculations for the OTBI rate via the Tong-Lin factor. Realistic conditions for an experimental confirmation of the prediction of the present relativistic model versus PPT-theory are also presented.

The Standard Model of particle physics describes the properties of elementary particles and their interactions remarkably well, but in particular does not account for dark matter. Isotope-shift spectroscopy is a sensitive probe of fifth forces and new particles that illuminate the dark matter sector. This method sets bounds on new bosons that couple neutrons and electrons with masses in the keV/c2 to MeV/c2 range. With increasing spectroscopic precision, such searches are limited by uncertainties of isotope masses and the understanding of nuclear structure. Here, we report on high-precision mass-ratio and isotope-shift measurements of the ytterbium isotopes $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb that exceed previous measurements by up to two orders of magnitude. From these measurements, we extract higher-order changes in the nuclear charge distribution along the Yb isotope chain and use these to benchmark novel ab initio calculations. Our measurements set new bounds on the existence of the proposed boson.

Ab initio QED calculations of the nuclear magnetic shielding constant in helium-like ions are presented. We combine the nonrelativistic QED approach based on an expansion in powers of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ and the so-called ``all-order'' QED approach which includes all orders in the parameter $Z\alpha$ but uses a perturbation expansion in the parameter $1/Z$ (where $Z$ is the nuclear charge number). The combination of the two complementary methods makes our treatment applicable both to low-$Z$ and high-$Z$ ions. Our calculations confirm the presence of a rare antiscreening effect for the relativistic shielding correction and demonstrate the importance of the inclusion of the negative-energy part of the Dirac spectrum.

The spin polarization of photoelectrons induced by an intense linearly polarized laser field is investigated using numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation in companion with our analytic treatment via the spin-resolved strong-field approximation and classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that, even though the total polarization vanishes upon averaging over the photoelectron momentum, momentum-resolved spin polarization is significant, typically exhibiting a vortex structure relative to the laser polarization axis. The polarization arises from the transfer of spin-orbital coupling in the bound state to the spin-correlated quantum orbits in the continuum. The rescattering of photoelectrons at the atomic core plays an important role in forming the polarization vortex structure, while there is no significant effect of the spin-orbit coupling during the continuum dynamics. Furthermore, spin-polarized electron holography is demonstrated, feasible for extracting fine structural information about the atom., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The investigation of the absolute scale of the effective neutrino mass remains challenging due to the exclusively weak interaction of neutrinos with all known particles in the standard model of particle physics. Currently, the most precise and least model-dependent upper limit on the electron antineutrino mass is set by the KATRIN experiment from the analysis of the tritium \b{eta}-decay. Another promising approach is the electron capture in $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$, which is under investigation using microcalorimetry within the ECHo and HOLMES collab orations. An independently measured Q-value of this process is vital for the assessment of systematic uncertainties in the neutrino mass determination. Here, we report a direct, independent determination of this $Q$-value by measuring the free-space cyclotron frequency ratio of highly charged ions of $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$ and $^{163}\mathrm{Dy}$ in the Penning trap experiment \textsc{Pentatrap}. Combining this ratio with atomic physics calculations of the electronic binding energies yields a $Q$-value of $2863.2(0.6)\,\mathrm{eV}/c^{2}$ - a more than 50-fold improvement over the state-of-the-art. This will enable the determination of the electron neutrino mass on a sub-eV level from the analysis of the electron capture in $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$.

Vacuum polarization (VP) is investigated for the interaction of a polarized $\gamma$-ray beam of GeV photons with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse. In a conventional setup of a vacuum birefringence measurement, a VP signal is the emerging small circular (linear) polarization of the initially linearly (circularly) polarized probe photons. The pair production via the nonlinear Breit-Wheeler process in such a high-energy environment eliminates part of the $\gamma$-photons in the outgoing $\gamma$-beam, increasing the statistical error and decreasing the accuracy of this VP signal. In contrast, we investigate the conversion of the emerging circular polarization of $\gamma$-photons into longitudinal polarization of the created positrons, considering the latter as the main VP signal. To study the VP effects in the highly nonlinear regime, where the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian method breaks down, we have developed a Monte-Carlo simulation method, incorporating vacuum birefringence and dichroism via the one-loop QED probabilities in the locally constant field approximation. Our Monte Carlo method will enable the study of VP effects in strong fields of arbitrary configuration. With 10~PW laser systems, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the fermionic signal of the VP effect at the 5$\sigma$ confidence level with a few hours of measurement time.

The atomic mass of uranium-238 has been determined to be $238.050\,787\,618(15)\,\text{u}$, improving the literature uncertainty by two orders of magnitude. It is obtained from a measurement of the mass ratio of $^{238}$U$^{47+}$ and $^{132}$Xe$^{26+}$ ions with an uncertainty of $3.5\times 10^{-12}$. The measurement was carried out with the Penning-trap mass spectrometer \textsc{Pentatrap} and was accompanied by a calculation of the binding energies $E_{\text{U}}$ and $E_{\text{Xe}}$ of the 47 and 26 missing electrons of the two highly charged ions, respectively. These binding energies were determined using an \textit{ab initio} multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method to be $E_{\text{U}} = 39\,927(10)\,\text{eV}$ and $E_{\text{Xe}} = 8\,971.2(21)\,\text{eV}$. The new mass value will serve as a reference for high-precision mass measurements in the heavy mass region of the nuclear chart up to transuranium nuclides., Comment: Includes a Supplemental Material

Highly charged ions (HCIs) offer many opportunities for next-generation clock research due to the vast landscape of available electronic transitions in different charge states. The development of XUV frequency combs has enabled the search for clock transitions based on shorter wavelengths in HCIs. However, without initial knowledge of the energy of the clock states, these narrow transitions are difficult to be probed by lasers. In this Letter, we provide experimental observation and theoretical calculation of a long-lived electronic state in Nb-like Pb$^{41+}$ which could be used as a clock state. With the mass spectrometer Pentatrap, the excitation energy of this metastable state is directly determined as a mass difference at an energy of 31.2(8) eV, corresponding to one of the most precise relative mass determinations to date with a fractional uncertainty of $4\times10^{-12}$. This experimental result agrees within 1 $\sigma$ with two partially different \textit{ab initio} multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of 31.68(13) eV and 31.76(35) eV, respectively. With a calculated lifetime of 26.5(5.3) days, the transition from this metastable state to the ground state bears a quality factor of $1.1\times10^{23}$ and allows for the construction of a HCI clock with a fractional frequency instability of $<10^{-19}/\sqrt{\tau}$.

A solution of the Dirac equation in a strong laser field presenting a nonspreading wave packet in the rest frame of the electron is derived. It consists of a generalization of the self-accelerating free electron wave packet [Kaminer et al. Nature Phys. 11, 261 (2015)] to the case with the background of a strong laser field. Built upon the notion of nonspreading for an extended relativistic wavepacket, the concept of Born rigidity for accelerated motion in relativity is the key ingredient of the solution. At its core, the solution comes from the connection between the self-accelerated free electron wave packet and the eigenstate of a Dirac electron in a constant and homogeneous gravitational field via the equivalence principle. The solution is an essential step towards the realization of the laser-driven relativistic collider [Meuren et al. PRL 114, 143201 (2015)], where the large spreading of a common Gaussian wave packet during the excursion in a strong laser field strongly limits the expectable yields., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

Generation of ultrarelativistic polarized leptons during interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating ultraintense laser pulse is investigated in the quantum radiation-dominated domain. While the symmetry of the laser field tends to average the radiative polarization of leptons to zero, we demonstrate the feasibility of sizable radiative polarization through breaking the symmetry of the process in the reflection regime. After the reflection, the off-axis particles escape the tightly focused beam with polarization correlated to the emission angle, while the particles at the beam center are more likely to be captured in the laser field with unmatched polarization and kinetic motion. Meanwhile, polarization along the electric field emerges due to the spin rotation in the transverse plane via precession. In this way, the combined effects of radiative polarization, spin precession and the laser field focusing are shaping the angle-dependent polarization for outgoing leptons. Our spin-resolved Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate an angle-dependent polarization degree up to $\sim20\%$ for both electrons and positrons, with a yield of one pair per seed electron. It provides a new approach for producing polarized high density electron and positron jets at ultraintense laser facilities.

Electron acceleration mechanisms near the counterstreaming interface of a relativistic collisionless shock (RCS) are investigated using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. We identify a slingshot-like injection process induced by the drifting electric field sustained by the flowing focus of backwards-moving electrons, which is distinct from the well-known stochastic acceleration. The flowing focus signifies the plasma kinetic transition from a preturbulent laminar motion to a chaotic turbulence. We find a characteristic correlation between the electron dynamics in the slingshot acceleration and the photon emission features. In particular, the integrated radiation from the RCS exhibits a counterintuitive non-monotonic dependence of the photon polarization degree on the photon energy, which originates from a polarization degradation of relatively high-energy photons emitted by the slingshot-injected electrons. Our results demonstrate the potential of photon polarization as an essential information source in exploring intricate dynamics in RCSs with relevance for earth-based plasma and astrophysical scenarios., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

The trajectories of relativistic particles in an intense electromagnetic field can be described by the Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equation, where radiation reaction (RR) is accounted for via a self-force, and interparticle fields are often neglected as an approximation. Yet, the inclusion of interparticle fields is necessary to ensure energy-momentum conservation, in particular during coherent emission. We present a simple generalization of the LL equation for many bodies, which includes coherence effects in the self-force. This theory is shown both analytically and numerically to satisfy energy-momentum conservation as expected. By simulating a neutral, relativistic bunch of electrons and positrons ($e^-/e^+$) colliding with a laser pulse, we show that the inclusion of interparticle fields can significantly affect the particle dynamics and the emission spectrum, even though the external field dominates over the interparticle fields., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

Highly charged ions (HCIs) are insensitive to external perturbations and are attractive for the development of ultrastable clocks. However, only a few HCI candidates are known to provide optical clock transitions. In this Letter, we show that, as a result of strong relativistic effects, there are more than 100 suitable optical HCI clock candidates in more than 70 elements. Their transitions are embedded in the fine-structure splitting of the $nd^4$, $nd^5$ and $nd^6$ ground-state configurations with $n=3,4,5$ being the principal quantum numbers. The corresponding high multipolarity transitions in these ions have lifetimes and quality factors many orders of magnitude longer and larger, respectively, than those in state-of-the-art clocks. Their polarizabilities are also orders of magnitude smaller, rendering them more stable against external electromagnetic fields. Furthermore, within the same electronic configurations, the clock transitions in heavy ions scale up to the XUV and soft-x-ray region, thus enable the development of clocks based on shorter wavelengths. The existence of multiple clock transitions in different charge states of a single element, as well as in a whole isoelectronic sequence, would significantly enrich the detection of fine-structure constant variations, the search for new physics and the test of nuclear theories via high-precision spectroscopy., Comment: 4 pages in main text, 4 figures

Employing colliding-pulse injection has been shown to enable high-quality electron beams to be generated from laser-plasma accelerators. Here by leveraging test particle simulations, Hamiltonian analysis, and multidimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, we lay the theoretical framework of spin-polarized electron beam generation in the colliding-pulse injection scheme. Furthermore, we show that this scheme enables the production of quasi-monoenergetic electron beams in excess of 80\% polarization and tens pC charge with commercial 10-TW-class laser systems., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The analytical R-matrix (ARM) theory has been known for an efficient description of the Coulomb effects of the atomic core in strong-field ionization in the nonrelativistic regime. We generalize the ARM theory into the relativistic domain aiming at the application to strong-field ionization of highly-charged ions in ultrastrong laser fields. Comparison with the relativistic Coulomb-corrected strong field approximations (SFA) is provided, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages. The weakly relativistic asymptotics and its accordance with the nondipole Coulomb-corrected SFA are examined. As an example of a physical application of the relativistic ARM, the Coulomb enhancement of tunneling ionization probability for highly-charged ions at the cutoff of the direct channel is discussed.

Plasma current filamentation of an ultrarelativistic electron beam impinging on an overdense plasma is investigated, with emphasis on radiation-induced electron polarization. Particle-in-cell simulations provide the classification and in-depth analysis of three different regimes of the current filaments, namely, the normal filament, abnormal filament, and quenching regimes. We show that electron radiative polarization emerges during the instability along the azimuthal direction in the momentum space, which significantly varies across the regimes. We put forward an intuitive Hamiltonian model to trace the origin of the electron polarization dynamics. In particular, we discern the role of nonlinear transverse motion of plasma filaments, which induces asymmetry in radiative spin flips, yielding an accumulation of electron polarization. Our results break the conventional perception that quasi-symmetric fields are inefficient for generating radiative spin-polarized beams, suggesting the potential of electron polarization as a source of new information on laboratory and astrophysical plasma instabilities., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The absolute atomic mass of $^{208}$Pb has been determined with a fractional uncertainty of $7\times 10^{-11}$ by measuring the cyclotron-frequency ratio $R$ of $^{208}$Pb$^{41+}$ to $^{132}$Xe$^{26+}$ with the high-precision Penning-trap mass spectrometer Pentatrap and computing the binding energies $E_{\text{Pb}}$ and $E_{\text{Xe}}$ of the missing 41 and 26 atomic electrons, respectively, with the ab initio fully relativistic multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method. $R$ has been measured with a relative precision of $9\times 10^{-12}$. $E_{\text{Pb}}$ and $E_{\text{Xe}}$ have been computed with an uncertainty of 9.1 eV and 2.1 eV, respectively, yielding $207.976\,650\,571(14)$ u (u$=9.314\,941\,024\,2(28)\times 10^{8}$ eV/c$^2$) for the $^{208}$Pb neutral atomic mass. This result agrees within $1.2\sigma$ with that from the Atomic-Mass Evaluation (AME) 2020, while improving the precision by almost two orders of magnitude. The new mass value directly improves the mass precision of 14 nuclides in the region of Z=81-84 and is the most precise mass value with A>200. Thus, the measurement establishes a new region of reference mass values which can be used e.g. for precision mass determination of transuranium nuclides, including the superheavies., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be published in EPJA

The impact of radiation reaction and Breit-Wheeler pair production on acceleration of fully ionized Carbon ions driven by an intense linearly-polarized laser pulse has been investigated in the ultra-relativistic transparency regime. Against initial expectations radiation reaction and pair production at ultra-high laser intensities is found to enhance the energy gained by the ions. The electrons lose most of their transverse momentum and the additionally produced pair plasma of Breit-Wheeler electrons and positrons co-stream in the forward direction as opposed to the existing electrons streaming at an angle above zero. We discuss how these observations could be explained by the changes in the phase velocity of the Buneman instability, that is known to aid ion acceleration in the Breakout-Afterburner regime, by tapping the free energy in the relative electron and ion streams. We present evidence that these non-classical effects can further improve the highest Carbon ion energies in this transparency regime.

Vacuum birefringence (VB) is a basic phenomenon predicted in quantum electrodynamics (QED). However, due to the smallness of the signal, conventional magnet-based and extremely intense laser-driven detection methods are still very challenging. This is because in the first case the interaction length is large but the field is limited, and vice versa in the second case. We put forward a method to generate and detect VB in a plasma bubble wakefield, which combines both advantages, providing large fields along large interaction lengths. A polarized $\gamma$-photon beam is considered to probe the wakefield along a propagation distance of millimeters to centimeters in the plasma bubble. We find via plasma particle-in-cell simulations that the VB signal in terms of Stokes parameters can reach about $ 10^{-5}$ ($10^{-3}$-$10^{-2}$) for tens of MeV (GeV) probe photons with moderately intense lasers ($10^{20}$-$10^{21}~\mathrm{W/cm^2}$). The main source of noise from plasma electrons is mitigated, in particular, by a choice of $\gamma$-photon polarization and by proper modulation of the plasma density. The proposed method represents an attractive alternative for the experimental observation of VB via laser-plasma interaction.

The quantum electrodynamic (QED) description of light-and-matter interaction is one of the most fundamental theories of physics and has been shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental results. Specifically, measurements of the electronic magnetic moment (or $g$ factor) of highly charged ions (HCI) in Penning traps can provide a stringent probe for QED, testing the Standard model in the strongest electromagnetic fields. When studying the difference of isotopes, even the intricate effects stemming from the nucleus can be resolved and tested as, due to the identical electron configuration, many common QED contributions do not have to be considered. Experimentally however, this becomes quickly limited, particularly by the precision of the ion masses or the achievable magnetic field stability. Here we report on a novel measurement technique that overcomes both of these limitations by co-trapping two HCIs in a Penning trap and measuring the difference of their $g$ factors directly. The resulting correlation of magnetic field fluctuations leads to drastically higher precision. We use a dual Ramsey-type measurement scheme with the ions locked on a common magnetron orbit, separated by only a few hundred micrometres, to extract the coherent spin precession frequency difference. We have measured the isotopic shift of the bound electron $g$ factor of the neon isotopes of $^{20}$Ne$^{9+}$ and $^{22}$Ne$^{9+}$ to 0.56 parts-per-trillion ($5.6 \cdot 10^{-13}$) precision relative to their $g$ factors, which is an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude compared to state-of-the-art techniques. This resolves the QED contribution to the nuclear recoil for the very first time and accurately validates the corresponding theory. The electron nondipole dynamics in tunneling ionization in an elliptically polarized laser field is investigated theoretically using a relativistic Coulomb-corrected strong-field approximation (SFA) based on the eikonal approximation of the Klein-Gordon equation. We calculate attoclock angle-resolved light-front momentum distributions at different ellipticities of the laser field in quasistatic and nonadiabatic regimes and analyze them with an improved Simpleman model. The nondipole correlations between longitudinal and transverse momentum components are examined. Deviations of the photoelectron momentum distribution calculated via SFA with respect to the available experimental results as well as with the improved Simpleman model are discussed and interpreted in terms of nonadiabatic as well as Coulomb effects in the continuum and under-the-barrier. The favorable prospects of an experimental observation are discussed.

A highly effective approach to the search for hypothetical new interactions through isotope shift spectroscopy of hydrogen-like ions is presented. A weighted difference of the g factor and ground-state energy is shown to assist in the suppression of detrimental uncertainties from nuclear structure, while preserving the hypothetical contributions from new interactions. Experimental data from only a single isotope pair is required. Account is taken of the small, subleading nuclear corrections, allowing to show that, provided feasible experimental progress is achieved in UV/X-ray spectroscopy, the presented approach can yield competitive bounds on New Physics electron coupling parameters improved by more than an order of magnitude compared to leading bounds from atomic physics.

A derivation of fully polarization-resolved probabilities is provided for high-energy photon emission and electron-positron pair production in ultrastrong laser fields. The probabilities resolved in both electron spin and photon polarization of incoming and outgoing particles are indispensable for developing QED Monte Carlo and QED-Particle-in-Cell codes, aimed at the investigation of polarization effects in nonlinear QED processes in ultraintense laser-plasma and laser-electron beam interactions, and other nonlinear QED processes in external ultrastrong fields, which involve multiple elementary processes of a photon emission and pair production. The quantum operator method introduced by Baier and Katkov is employed for the calculation of probabilities within the quasiclassical approach and the local constant field approximation. The probabilities for the ultrarelativistic regime are given in a compact form and are suitable to describe polarization effects in strong laser fields of arbitrary configuration, rendering them very well suited for applications.

A long-standing problem of fine-structure anomalies in muonic atoms is revisited by considering the $\Delta 2p$ splitting in muonic $^{90}\mathrm{Zr}$, $^{120}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ and the $\Delta 3p$ splitting in muonic $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$. State-of-the-art techniques from both nuclear and atomic physics are brought together in order to perform the most comprehensive to date calculations of nuclear-polarization energy shifts. Barring the more subtle case of muonic $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$, the results suggest that the dominant calculation uncertainty is much smaller than the persisting discrepancies between theory and experiment. One of the most enduring and intensively studied problems of X-ray astronomy is the disagreement of state-of-the art theory and observations for the intensity ratio of two Fe XVII transitions of crucial value for plasma diagnostics, dubbed 3C and 3D. We unravel this conundrum at the PETRA III synchrotron facility by increasing the resolving power two and a half times and the signal-to-noise ratio thousand-fold compared to our previous work. The Lorentzian wings had hitherto been indistinguishable from the background and were thus not modeled, resulting in a biased line-strength estimation. The present experimental oscillator-strength ratio $R_\mathrm{exp}=f_{\mathrm{3C}}/f_{\mathrm{3D}}=3.51(2)_{\mathrm{stat}}(7)_{\mathrm{sys}}$ agrees with our state-of-the-art calculation of $R_\mathrm{th}=3.55(2)$, as well as with some previous theoretical predictions. To further rule out any uncertainties associated with the measured ratio, we also determined the individual natural linewidths and oscillator strengths of 3C and 3D transitions, which also agree well with the theory. An all-optical method of ultrafast spin rotation is put forward to precisely manipulate the polarization of relativistic charged particle beams of leptons or ions. In particular, laser-driven dense ultrashort beams are manipulated via single-shot interaction with a co-propagating moderate temporally asymmetric (frequency-chirped or subcycle THz) laser pulse. Using semi-classical numerical simulations, we find that in a temporally asymmetrical laser field, the spin rotation of a particle can be determined from the flexibly controllable phase retardation between its spin precession and momentum oscillation. An initial polarization of a proton beam can be rotated to any desired orientation (e.g., from the common transverse to the more useful longitudinal polarization) with extraordinary precision (better than 1\%) in tens of femtoseconds using a feasible frequency-chirped laser pulse. Moreover, the beam qualities, in terms of energy and angular divergence, can be significantly improved in the rotation process. This method has potential applications in various areas involving ultrafast spin manipulation, like laser-plasma, laser-nuclear and high-energy particle physics.

Electron beam longitudinal polarization during the interaction with counterpropagating circularly-polarized ultraintense laser pulses is investigated, while accounting for the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. Although it is known that the helicity transfer from the laser photons to the electron beam is suppressed in linear and nonlinear Compton scattering processes, we show that the helicity transfer nevertheless can happen via an intermediate step of the electron radiative transverse polarization, phase-matched with the driving field, followed up by spin rotation into the longitudinal direction as induced by the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. With spin-resolved QED Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate the consequent helicity transfer from laser photons to the electron beam with a degree up to 10%, along with an electron radial polarization up to 65% after multiple photon emissions in a femtosecond timescale. This effect is detectable with currently achievable laser facilities, evidencing the role of the leading QED vertex correction to the electron anomalous magnetic moment in the polarization dynamics in ultrastrong laser fields.

Understanding and interpretation of the dynamics of ultrarelativistic plasma is a challenge, which calls for the development of methods for \textit{in situ} probing the plasma dynamical characteristics. We put forward a new method, harnessing polarization properties of $\gamma$-photons emitted from a non-pre-polarized plasma irradiated by a circularly polarized pulse. We show that the angular pattern of $\gamma$-photon linear polarization is explicitly correlated with the dynamics of the radiating electrons, which provides information on the laser-plasma interaction regime. Furthermore, with the $\gamma$-photon circular polarization originating from the electron radiative spin-flips, the plasma susceptibility to quantum electrodynamical processes is gauged. Our study demonstrates that the polarization signal of emitted $\gamma$-photons can be a versatile information source, which would be beneficial for the research fields of laser-driven plasma, accelerator science, and laboratory astrophysics.

Long-lived excited states of atomic nuclei can act as energy traps. These states, known as nuclear isomers, can store a large amount of energy over long periods of time, with a very high energy-to-mass ratio. Under natural conditions, the trapped energy is only slowly released, limited by the long isomer lifetimes. Dynamical external control of nuclear state population has proven so far very challenging, despite ground-breaking incentives for a clean and efficient energy storage solution. Here, we describe a protocol to achieve the external control of the isomeric nuclear decay by using electrons whose wavefunction has been especially designed and reshaped on demand. Recombination of these electrons into the atomic shell around the isomer can lead to the controlled release of the stored nuclear energy. On the example of $^{93m}$Mo, we show that the use of tailored electron vortex beams increases the depletion by four orders of magnitude compared to the spontaneous nuclear decay of the isomer. Furthermore, specific orbitals can sustain an enhancement of the recombination cross section for vortex electron beams by as much as six orders of magnitude, providing a handle for manipulating the capture mechanism. Quantum models based on few-mode Master equations have been a central tool in the study of resonator quantum electrodynamics, extending the seminal single-mode Jaynes-Cummings model to include loss and multiple modes. Despite their broad application range, previous approaches within this framework have either relied on a Markov approximation or a fitting procedure. By combining ideas from pseudomode and quasinormal mode theory, we develop a certification criterion for multi-mode effects in lossy resonators. It is based on a witness observable, and neither requires a fitting procedure nor a Markov approximation. Using the resulting criterion, we demonstrate that such multi-mode effects are important for understanding previous experiments in X-ray cavity QED with M\"ossbauer nuclei and that they allow one to tune the nuclear ensemble properties.

Deep understanding of photon polarization impact on pair production is essential for the efficient creation of laser driven polarized positron beams, and demands a complete description of polarization effects in strong-field QED processes. We investigate, employing fully polarization resolved Monte Carlo simulations, the correlated photon and electron (positron) polarization effects in multiphoton Breit-Wheeler pair production process during the interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam with a counterpropagating elliptically polarized laser pulse. We showed that the polarization of e^-e^+ pairs is degraded by 35\%, when the polarization of the intermediate photon is resolved, accompanied with an approximately 13\% decrease of the pair yield. Moreover, the polarization direction of energetic positrons in small angle region is reversed, which originates from the pair production of hard photons with polarization parallel with electric field.

The nondipole under-the-barrier dynamics of the electron during strong-field tunneling ionization is investigated, examining the role of the Coulomb field of the atomic core. The common analysis in the strong field approximation is consequently generalised to include the leading light-front non-dipole Coulomb corrections and demonstrates the counter-intuitive impact of the sub-barrier Coulomb field. Despite its attractive nature, the sub-barrier Coulomb field increases the photoelectron nondipole momentum shift along the laser propagation direction, involving a strong dependence on the laser field. The scaling of the effect with respect to the principal quantum number and angular momentum of the bound state is found. We demonstrate that the signature of Coulomb induced sub-barrier effects can be identified in the asymptotic photoelectron momentum distribution via a comparative study of the field-dependent longitudinal momentum shift for different atomic species with state-of-the-art experimental techniques of mid-infrared lasers., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Generation of arbitrarily spin-polarized lepton (here refer in particular to electron and positron) beams has been investigated in the single-shot interaction of high-energy polarized $\gamma$ photons with an ultraintense asymmetric laser pulse via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler (BW) pair production. We develop a fully spin-resolved semi-classical Monte Carlo method to describe the pair creation and polarization in the local constant field approximation. In nonlinear BW process the polarization of created pairs is simultaneously determined by the polarization of parent $\gamma$ photons, the polarization and asymmetry of scattering laser field, due to the spin angular momentum transfer and the asymmetric spin-dependent pair production probabilities, respectively. In considered all-optical method, dense GeV lepton beams with average polarization degree up to about $80\%$ (adjustable between the transverse and longitudinal components) can be obtained with currently achievable laser facilities, which could be used as injectors of the polarized $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Dense high-energy monoenergetic proton beams are vital for wide applications, thus modern laser-plasma-based ion acceleration methods are aiming to obtain high-energy proton beams with energy spread as low as possible. In this work, we put forward a quantum radiative compression method to post-compress a highly accelerated proton beam and convert it to a dense quasi-monoenergetic one. We find that when the relativistic plasma produced by radiation pressure acceleration collides head-on with an ultraintense laser beam, large-amplitude plasma oscillations are excited due to quantum radiation-reaction and the ponderomotive force, which induce compression of the phase space of protons located in its acceleration phase with negative gradient. Our three-dimensional spin-resolved QED particle-in-cell simulations show that hollow-structure proton beams with a peak energy $\sim$ GeV, relative energy spread of few percents and number $N_p\sim10^{10}$ (or $N_p\sim 10^9$ with a $1\%$ energy spread) can be produced in near future laser facilities, which may fulfill the requirements of important applications, such as, for radiography of ultra-thick dense materials, or as injectors of hadron colliders.

Interaction of an ultrastrong short laser pulse with non-prepolarized near-critical density plasma is investigated in an ultrarelativistic regime, with an emphasis on the radiative spin polarization of ejected electrons. Our particle-in-cell simulations show explicit correlations between the angle resolved electron polarization and the structure and properties of the transient quasistatic plasma magnetic field. While the magnitude of the spin signal is the indicator of the magnetic field strength created by the longitudinal electron current, the asymmetry of electron polarization is found to gauge the island-like magnetic distribution which emerges due to the transverse current induced by the laser wave front. The problem of time delay in tunneling ionization is revisited. The origin of time delay at the tunnel exit is analysed, underlining the two faces of the concept of the tunnelling time delay: the time delay around the tunnel exit and the asymptotic time delay at a detector. We show that the former time delay, in the sense of a delay in the peak of the wavefunction, exists as a matter of principle and arises due to the sub-barrier interference of the reflected and transmitted components of the tunneling electronic wavepacket. We exemplify this by describing the tunnelling ionization of an electron bound by a short-range potential within the strong field approximation in a "deep tunnelling" regime. If sub-barrier reflections are extracted from this wavefunction, then the time delay of the peak is shown to vanish. Thus, we assert that the disturbance of the tunnelling wavepacket by the reflection from the surface of the barrier causes a time delay in the neighbourhood of the tunnel exit., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

The elastic scattering of two real photons in vacuum is one of the most elusive of the fundamentally new processes predicted by quantum electrodynamics. This explains why, although it was first predicted more than eighty years ago, it has so far remained undetected. Here we show that in present-day facilities, the elastic scattering of two real photons can become detectable far off axis in an asymmetric photon-photon collider setup. This may be obtained within one day of operation time by colliding 1 mJ extreme ultraviolet pulses with the broadband gamma-ray radiation generated in nonlinear Compton scattering of ultrarelativistic electron beams with terawatt-class optical laser pulses operating at a 10 Hz repetition rate. In addition to the investigation of elastic photon-photon scattering, this technique allows us to unveil or constrain new physics that could arise from the coupling of photons to yet undetected particles, therefore opening new avenues for searches of physics beyond the standard model., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Exact solutions of the Dirac equation, a system of four partial differential equations, are rare. The vast majority of them are for highly symmetric stationary systems. Moreover, only a handful of solutions for time dependent dynamics exists. Given the growing number of applications of high energy electron beams interacting with a variety of quantum systems in laser fields, novel methods for finding exact solutions to the Dirac equation are called for. We present a method for building up solutions to the Dirac equation employing a recently introduced approach for the description of spinorial fields and their driving electromagnetic fields in terms of geometric algebras. We illustrate the method by developing several stationary as well as non-stationary solutions of the Dirac equation with well defined orbital angular momentum along the electron's propagation direction. The first set of solutions describe free electron beams in terms of Bessel functions as well as stationary solutions for both a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous magnetic field. The second set of solutions are new and involve a plane electromagnetic wave combined with a generally inhomogeneous longitudinal magnetic field. Moreover, the developed technique allows us to derive general physical properties of the dynamics in such field configurations, as well as provides physical predictions on the self-consistent electromagnetic fields induced by the dynamics., Comment: 21 pages,5 figures

The process of turning a proton into a neutron, positron and electron-neutrino in a strong plane-wave electromagnetic field is studied. This process is forbidden in vacuum and is seen to feature an exponential suppression factor which is non-perturbative in the field amplitude. The suppression is alleviated when the proton experiences a field strength of about ten times the Schwinger critical field in its rest frame or larger. Around this threshold the lifetime of the proton, in its rest frame, is comparable to the conventional neutron decay lifetime. As the field strength is increased, the proton lifetime becomes increasingly short. We investigate possible scenarios where this process may be observed in the laboratory using an ultra-intense laser and a high-energy proton beam with the conclusion, however, that it would be very challenging to observe this effect in the near future., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures. The problem of Freeman resonances [R. R. Freeman \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{59}, 1092 (1987)] when strong field ionization is enhanced due to the transient population of excited states during the ionization, is revisited. An intuitive model is put forward which explains the mechanism of the intermediate population of excited states during nonadiabatic tunneling ionization via the under-the-barrier recollision and recombination. The theoretical model is based on perturbative strong-field approximation (SFA), where the sub-barrier bound-continuum-bound pathway is described in the second-order SFA, while the further ionization from the excited state by an additional perturbative step. The enhancement of ionization is shown to arise due to the constructive interference of contributions into the excitation amplitudes originating from different laser cycles. The applied model provides an intuitive understanding of the electron dynamics during a Freeman resonance in strong-field ionization, as well as means of enhancing the process and possible applications to related processes.

Sources of high-energy photons have important applications in almost all areas of research. However, the photon flux and intensity of existing sources is strongly limited for photon energies above a few hundred keV. Here we show that a high-current ultrarelativistic electron beam interacting with multiple submicrometer-thick conducting foils can undergo strong self-focusing accompanied by efficient emission of gamma-ray synchrotron photons. Physically, self-focusing and high-energy photon emission originate from the beam interaction with the near-field transition radiation accompanying the beam-foil collision. This near field radiation is of amplitude comparable with the beam self-field, and can be strong enough that a single emitted photon can carry away a significant fraction of the emitting electron energy. After beam collision with multiple foils, femtosecond collimated electron and photon beams with number density exceeding that of a solid are obtained. The relative simplicity, unique properties, and high efficiency of this gamma-ray source open up new opportunities for both applied and fundamental research including laserless investigations of strong-field QED processes with a single electron beam., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, matches published article
