Abstract

Due to climate change, population increase, and the urban heat island effect (UHI), the demand for cooling energy, especially in urban areas, has increased and will further increase in the future. Technologies such as radiative cooling offer a sustainable and energy-free solution by using the wavelength ranges of the atmosphere that are transparent to electromagnetic radiation, the so-called atmospheric window (8–13 µm), to emit thermal radiation into the colder (3 K) outer space. Previous publications in the field of textile building cooling have focused on specific fiber structures and textile substrate materials as well as complex multi-layer constructions, which restrict the use for highly scaled outdoor applications. This paper describes the development of a novel substrate-independent coating with spectrally selective radiative properties. By adapting the coating parameters and combining low-emitting and solar-reflective particles, along with a matrix material emitting strongly in the mid-infrared range (MIR), substrate-independent cooling below ambient temperature is achieved. Moreover, the coating is designed to be easily applicable, with a low thickness, to ensure high flexibility and scalability, making it suitable for various applications such as membrane architecture, textile roofs, or tent construction. The results show a median daytime temperature reduction (7 a.m.–7 p.m.) of 2 °C below ambient temperature on a hot summer day. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper investigates the theoretical and experimental cooling performance of textile materials utilizing radiative cooling technology. By applying Kirchhoff's law, the emissivity of surfaces is determined, revealing that materials with high transmission values can achieve comparable cooling performance to those with high reflection values. Notably, materials exhibiting moderate reflectance and transmittance in the solar range tend to absorb minimal solar radiation, thus offering high theoretical cooling performance. However, practical applications like building envelopes or clothing present challenges due to the impact of background radiation on overall cooling capacity. Despite their intrinsic cooling properties, a significant portion of solar radiation is transmitted, complicating matters as the background can significantly affect overall cooling performance. This study provides a solution that accounts for the influence of background materials. Based on spectral data, various background materials and their impact on different semi-transparent comparison materials can be considered, and cooling performance can be simulated. This enables the simulation of cooling performance for various application scenarios and facilitates comparisons between transparent, semi-transparent, and opaque textile materials. 9. Flammer Syndrome in Aesthetic Medicine: The Importance of Recognizing Signs and Symptoms

Abstract

Purpose Flammer syndrome (FS), a clinical entity characterized by primary vascular dysregulation of blood flow together with various signs and symptoms, has been reported in both healthy individuals and those with certain diseases. Adequate management of FS requires personalized treatment and preventive measures. In the field of aesthetic medicine, proper regulation of blood flow is crucial for optimal wound healing. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of FS signs and symptoms among individuals seeking aesthetic intervention. Methods A total of 207 patients seeking aesthetic intervention at the Beauty2Go clinic in Lucerne answered a standardized questionnaire consisting of 15 signs and symptoms of FS. Results Overall, 189 (91.3%) patients were female and 18 (8.7%) were male. The mean age was 36.0 years (standard deviation [SD] 12.1) and the median age was 35.0 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 14.0−67.0). Several signs and symptoms of FS were present among patients undergoing aesthetic surgery. Compared to a control group patients showed a higher tendency towards cold hands (25.1% [95% confidence interval [CI]: 19.5–31.7]), feeling cold (21.7% [95% CI: 16.4–28.1]) and low blood pressure (27.3% [95% CI: 21.0–34.7]). Other signs and symptoms included Increased response to certain drugs (8.4% [95% CI: 4.8–14.3]) a low Body Mass Index (BMI) (58.0% [95% CI: 50.9–64.7]), Reversible skin blotches (7.2% [95% CI: 4.3–11.9]) and a tendency towards perfectionism (53.6% [95% CI: 46.6–60.5]). Accompanying symptoms of migraines were lower in the patient group (5.0% [95% CI: 2.2–10.4]) than in the control group. Conclusions The prevalence of FS is notable among individuals seeking aesthetic interventions. Acknowledging this fact not only enables the treatment of FS in patients but also empowers the field of aesthetic medicine to devise proactive strategies for enhancing blood flow regulation through personalized treatment in this population. 14. State Responsibility Regarding Domestic Violence Against Women With a Focus on Turkey

Abstract

Domestic violence is one of the biggest human rights violations that affect women all over the world regardless of their color, nationality, or age. This problem has reached such a degree that women appear to be more at risk of facing violence inside of the home by a husband or partner, than outside by strangers. However, the traditional view that the State cannot be held responsible for acts of violence inflicted by private actors has been the major impediment to the implementation of legislation that seeks to protect women from such violence. This thesis aims to challenge this view and examines the legal reasoning which demonstrates that the responsibility to protect women from domestic violence lies with the State itself. For that purpose, domestic violence is first defined in order to show that its scope is not limited to acts of physical and sexual violence only, and that it also encompasses economic and emotional violence acts. Even women themselves often ignore the real meaning of domestic violence, believing that they are being subjected to ''normal behavior''. After defining its limits, domestic violence is interpreted in the context of the right to be free from discrimination and the prohibition of torture. The association of domestic violence with concrete human rights is crucial since it helps to challenge the misunderstanding that such acts are private matters that have no consequences for State responsibility. The different international and regional human rights instruments that constitute a legal basis for State responsibility regarding acts of domestic violence are analysed in detail. This work uses Turkey as an example in order to give concrete insight into the size of the problem and to analyse the different legislative efforts aiming the implementation of international human rights provisions. Abstract

Objectives: The identification of the health needs of university students and staff may be the first step in improving public health approaches. The aim of this study was to investigate the most needed health care services by the university students and employees. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 864 representative individuals on Marmara University Göztepe Campus, Istanbul, Turkey. All participants were given a questionnaire including questions about the sociodemographic characteristics and health status, healthy lifestyle behaviours and health needs. Results: The mean age of the participants was 24±7.9 years. The number of participants who had periodic health maintenance/ check-up was 11.4%. Smoking and alcohol use prevalence was similar for students and employees (30.9% and 30.2%). Depression screening was found to be positive in 67.4% of the participants (58.7% of the employees, 69.7% of the students).The most commonly requested information was on healthy nutrition (42.4%), followed by screening for diseases (32.3%), emergency situations/first aid (31.2%), exercise counselling (28.6%) and prevention of chronic diseases (27.8%). Conclusion: Our findings show that the most needed health care services are psychological counselling, periodic health controls, health promotion counselling and first aid training.

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, klinik öncesi dönemde yer alan birinci basamak deneyimi sırasında elde edilen kazanımları öğrencilerin bakış açısından değerlendirmektir.Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırmanın yöntemi nitelikseldir. 2017-2018 eğitim öğretim yılında Marmara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi 3. Sınıfında uygulanan Birinci Basamak Deneyimi programı sonrasında 147 öğrenciden elde edilen gözlem ve deneyim raporları değerlendirilmiş, yapı ve içerik açısından beklentileri karşılayan 61 rapora içerik ve tematik analizi uygulanmıştır. Bulgular: Ortaya çıkan öğrenci kazanımları, “Tıbbi Bilgi Kazanımları”, “Temel Beceri Kazanımları”, “Profesyonelliğe yönelik tutum ve davranış kazanımları”, “Kendi yeterliklerini ve sınırlarını fark etme”, “Aile Hekimliği ve Birinci Basamak uygulamalarını tanıma” ve “Programın Tıp Eğitiminin Diğer Bileşenleri ile İlişkilendirilmesi ve Öğrenmeye Katkısı” başlıkları altında kategorize edilmiştir. Sonuç: Birinci basamak deneyimi programının hekim adaylarının tıbbi bilgi ve becerilerini artırıcı, profesyonelliğe yönelik tutum ve davranışlarını geliştirici olduğu kadar kendi yeterlik ve sınırlarının fark etmelerine olanak sağlayan bir program olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Program aynı zamanda Aile Hekimliği disiplinin tanınmasını da sağlamıştır. Sonuç olarak, araştırmamız, Fakültemizde klinik öncesi dönemde uygulanan Birinci Basamak Deneyimi programının amacına ulaştığını, öğrenciler gözüyle kazanımların oldukça kapsamlı olduğunu göstermektedir.

Abstract

Objective This study aims to examine knowledge and attitudes towards Complementary and Alternative Medicine among medical students in Turkey, and find out whether they want to be trained in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out between October and December 2010 among medical students. Data were collected from a total of seven medical schools. Findings The study included 943 medical students. The most well known methods among the students were herbal treatment (81.2 %), acupuncture (80.8 %), hypnosis (78.8 %), body-based practices including massage (77 %) and meditation (65.2 %), respectively. Acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal treatment and meditation were better known among female participants compared to males (p Conclusions Majority of the medical students were familiar with the CAM methods widely used in Turkey, while most of them had positive attitudes towards CAM as well as willingness to receive training on the subject, and they were likely to recommend CAM methods to their patients in their future professional lives. With its gradual scientific development and increasing popularity, there appears a need for a coordinated policy in integrating CAM into the medical curriculum, by taking expectations of and feedback from medical students into consideration in setting educational standards.
