Herbarium collections shape our understanding of the world’s flora and are crucial for addressing global change and biodiversity conservation. The formation of such natural history collections, however, are not free from sociopolitical issues of immediate relevance. Despite increasing efforts addressing issues of representation and colonialism in natural history collections, herbaria have received comparatively less attention. While it has been noted that the majority of plant specimens are housed in the global North, the extent of this disparity has not been rigorously quantified to date. Here, by analyzing over 85 million specimen records and surveying herbaria across the globe, we assess the colonial legacy of botanical collections and how we may move towards a more inclusive future. We demonstrate that colonial exploitation has contributed to an inverse relationship between where plant biodiversity exists in nature and where it is housed in herbaria. Such disparities persist in herbaria across physical and digital realms despite overt colonialism having ended over half a century ago, suggesting ongoing digitization and decolonization efforts have yet to alleviate colonial-era discrepancies. We emphasize the need for acknowledging the inconvenient history of herbarium collections and the implementation of a more equitable, global paradigm for their collection, curation, and use.

This report summarizes road damage related to geotechnical problems caused by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake, which were observed during a field survey conducted by a survey team dispatched by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) and Japan Geotechnical Society (JGS). In Kathmandu City, an embankment of the Araniko Highway, which connects Kathmandu to Bhaktapur, suffered from damage due to subsidence. Ground fissures, tilting of buildings and road pavement damage were also observed in the surrounding area. A microtremor measurement indicates small stiffness or thick soft soil layer at the heavily-damaged area. On the other hand, reinforced retaining walls demonstrated good performance against the earthquake. In mountainous areas, traces of medium scale landslides and rockfalls along roads were frequently observed. A large number of steep slopes failed at shallow depth in the epicentral area, and their scale in terms of quantity and size tends to increase as approaching the epicenter.

A case of subclinical Sjögren's syndrome was diagnosed when the patient delivered a baby with SSA antibody-positive congenital heart block (CHB). The mother had been asymptomatic throughout her life. The laboratory findings including sialography, lip biopsy, Schirmer's test and a Rose-Bengal test showed Sjögren's syndrome. Such an asymptomatic case is termed subclinical Sjögren's syndrome. Thus, it was important to investigate an asymptomatic mother who delivers a SSA antibody-positive CHB baby.

A 77-year-old woman had an acute onset of chorea after hyperglycemic coma. She had no family history of neurologic disorders. Although brain CT showed no detectable lesions in the putamen, MR revealed a high intensity on T1-weighted images and a low intensity on T2-weighted images in both putamina.

The new mutation at the lpr locus, lprcg, induces massive lymphoproliferation characterized by the selective expansion of CD4-, CD8-, B220+, Thy-1+ cells or double-negative T lymphocytes and production of autoantibodies as does lpr. The thymus is necessary for the induction of anomalous double-negative T lymphocytes and autoimmune symptoms by lpr. To determine whether or not the thymus is also indispensable to expression of the function of lrpcg, lprcg homozygous athymic nude mice (lprcg/lprcg nu/nu; lprcg nudes) were constructed by crossing CBA/KlJms-lprcg/lprcg (CBA-lprcg) and DDD/l-nu/nu mice and observed for lymphoid organ hyperplasia and autoantibody production with or without thymus grafts from various strains of mice including CBA-lprcg. Neither lymphoproliferation nor significantly increased production of autoantibodies was observed in unmanipulated lprcg nudes. In contrast, thymus grafts of both +/+ and lprcg/lprcg genotypes caused lymphoid organ hyperplasia composed of anomalous double-negative T lymphocytes and significantly augmented the production of antibodies against single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). Interestingly, serum Ig and anti-ssDNA antibody levels rose in response to thymus grafts only in IgG but not in IgM classes. These results indicate that the thymus plays a crucial role in the induction of abnormal T-cell differentiation by lprcg and that thymic genotype is irrelevant.
