1. Papilloma and sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the lacrimal caruncle: a case report

Maria Miura-Karasawa,1 Hiroshi Toshida,1 Toshihiko Ohta,1 Akira Murakami2 1Department of Ophthalmology, Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital, Izunokuni, Shizuoka, Japan; 2Department of Ophthalmology, Juntendo University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan Objective: To report a case of coincidence of sebaceous gland hyperplasia and papilloma with detection of human papillomavirus-51 in the apical portion by in situ hybridization.Case presentation: A 75-year-old man noted discomfort at the inner canthus of his left eye when he blinked. A tumor of the lacrimal caruncle was identified and resected. The base of the tumor had a smooth surface and was whitish. In addition, a “navel-like structure” was seen, and the findings strongly suggested sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the lacrimal caruncle. The apical portion of the tumor was a papillomatous lesion. Histological examination of the resected tumor led to a diagnosis of sebaceous gland hyperplasia. Human papillomavirus-51 was detected in the apical portion by in situ hybridization. Based on these results, the final diagnosis was sebaceous gland hyperplasia with papilloma. No recurrence of either tumor has been observed up to 3 years postoperatively.Conclusion: This might be the first report of a case of coincidence of sebaceous gland hyperplasia and papilloma, even though the association between these two lesions was unclear, including which developed first. Abstract

Differences in attitudes on social issues such as abortion, immigration and sex are hugely divisive, and understanding their origins is among the most important tasks facing human behavioural sciences. Despite the clear psychological importance of parenthood and the motivation to provide care for children, researchers have only recently begun investigating their influence on social and political attitudes. Because socially conservative values ostensibly prioritize safety, stability and family values, we hypothesized that being more invested in parental care might make socially conservative policies more appealing. Studies 1 (preregistered; n = 376) and 2 (n = 1924) find novel evidence of conditional experimental effects of a parenthood prime, such that people who engaged strongly with a childcare manipulation showed an increase in social conservatism. Studies 3 (n = 2610, novel data from 10 countries) and 4 (n = 426 444, World Values Survey data) find evidence that both parenthood and parental care motivation are associated with increased social conservatism around the globe. Further, most of the positive association globally between age and social conservatism is accounted for by parenthood. These findings support the hypothesis that parenthood and parental care motivation increase social conservatism.

Abstract

The present study compared two forms of reciprocity, namely, selfish one versus altruistic one. In two experiments, participants played two rounds of Dictator Game. In the first round, they were all assigned the “recipient” role, and were either over- or under-benefitted by the game partner in the “allocator” role. In the second round, the participants were instead assigned the allocator role, with the recipient being either the same partner continued from the first round or a new partner. The results consistently showed that those who had been under-benefitted in the first round in turn over-benefitted the self in the second round regardless of whether the partner remained the same or was replaced. In contrast, those who had previously been over-benefited returned the favor, but this was the case only toward the continuing, not the new, partner. Hence, selfish behavior was generalized toward a former third-party, whereas a (an altruistic) favor was not generalized, being returned only toward the original benefactor. Implications of the asymmetry in chain reactions, as well as methodological issues, are discussed.

Abstract

Moral vitalism refers to a tendency to view good and evil as actual forces that can influence people and events. The Moral Vitalism Scale had been designed to assess moral vitalism in a brief survey form. Previous studies established the reliability and validity of the scale in US-American and Australian samples. In this study, the cross-cultural comparability of the scale was tested across 28 different cultural groups worldwide through measurement invariance tests. A series of exact invariance tests marginally supported partial metric invariance, however, an approximate invariance approach provided evidence of partial scalar invariance for a 5-item measure. The established level of measurement invariance allows for comparisons of latent means across cultures. We conclude that the brief measure of moral vitalism is invariant across 28 cultures and can be used to estimate levels of moral vitalism with the same precision across very different cultural settings.

Abstract

Sociologists coined the term "anomie" to describe societies that are characterized by disintegration and deregulation. Extending beyond conceptualizations of anomie that conflate the measurements of anomie as 'a state of society' and as a 'state of mind', we disentangle these conceptualizations and develop an analysis and measure of this phenomenon focusing on anomie as a perception of the 'state of society'. We propose that anomie encompasses two dimensions: a perceived breakdown in social fabric (i.e., disintegration as lack of trust and erosion of moral standards) and a perceived breakdown in leadership (i.e., deregulation as lack of legitimacy and effectiveness of leadership). Across six studies we present evidence for the validity of the new measure, the Perception of Anomie Scale (PAS). Studies 1a and 1b provide evidence for the proposed factor structure and internal consistency of PAS. Studies 2a-c provide evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. Finally, assessing PAS in 28 countries, we show that PAS correlates with national indicators of societal functioning and that PAS predicts national identification and well-being (Studies 3a & 3b). The broader implications of the anomie construct for the study of group processes are discussed.

Abstract

O clima semi-árido em Petrolina-PE/Juazeiro-BA pode possibilitar o uso de sistema de apoio à tomada de decisão (SATD) no manejo de doenças, pois ocorrem definidos períodos de chuva-PC (dezembro/maio) e seco-PS (junho/novembro). O risco de ocorrência de infecção de antracnose em manga foi avaliado com dados climáticos de 01/2004 a 03/2007, utilizando o modelo de Fitzell e registros de incidências de antracnose em frutos na pós-colheita. Segundo o modelo, a probabilidade de infecção (p) ocorreu sempre nos períodos de freqüência de chuvas, entretanto, os valores foram baixos. Os números de eventos com p > 30 e 50%, nos 365 dias do ano, foram: 2004 (25 e 13); 2005 (17 e 3); 2006 (21 e 4); até 03/2007 (8 e I). Enquanto a incidência em pós-colheita foi: 2004/PS (0%); 2005/PS (0%); 2006/PS (0%); 2007/PC (1,7%). Segundo o modelo, no PS não houve risco de ocorrência da doença (p=O), embora tenham ocorrido alguns valores de p> O, foram geralmente < 20% e de ocorrências esporádicas. Apenas no PC de 2007 (março) houve incidência de antracnose em frutos. Abstract

No primeiro semestre de 1995, observou-se no Salitre, municipio de Juazeiro, BA e em duas areas de sequeiro no municipio de Petrolina, PE, uma alta incidencia de plantas de umbuzeiro (Spondias tuberosa) apresentando sintomas de manchas escuras nas folhas, ramos e frutos. Objetivando-se conhecer o agente causal das manchas em umbuzeiros, o presente trabalho foi conduzido procedendo-se a estudos de diagnose do material coletado no campo, bem como testes de patogenicidade em mudas de umbuzeiros com o isolado fungico obtido de plantas com sintomas da doenca, em condicoes de casa-de-vegetacao. A concentracao do inoculo foi ajustada para 10(7) esporos/ml, medida atraves da camada de Neubauer. A inoculacao foi realizada por duas tecnicas distingas: 1. pulverizacoes sobre folha com o auxilio de atomizador De Vibiss, e 2. disposicao de discos de micelio do fungo sobre as folhas, aderidos com fita adesiva. Apos a inoculacao, as plantas foram incubadas em camara umida, por 48 horas. As plantas testemunhas foram igualmente tratadas com agua destilada esterilizada. O delineamento experimental foi do tipo inteiramente casualizado com dois tratamentos, representados por duas metodologias distingas de aplicacao, e cinco repeticoes, com duas plantas por vaso. Apos 10 dias de inoculacao, observou-se a reproducao dos sintomas nas mudas inoculadas, e o patogeno foi identificado como Colletotrichum gloesporioides, agente causal da Antracnose. Abstract

Considerando os prejuizos causados pela "murcha de esclerocio" aos tomaticultores do Submedio Sao Francisco, a dificuldade de controle da doenca pelo uso de produtos quimicos e visando-se um posterior estudo a nivel de cmapo, testou-se "in vitro", o potencial antagonico de sete isolados de Trichoderma spp. (ROS, TN31, FRUT, TR2, TN63, T10, TR25) e quatro de Pseudomonas spp. fluorescentes (CR19, FR38, Fr48 e TR50) procedentes de diferentes areas do estado de Pernambuco, sobre isolado (238) de Sclerotium folfsii, adquirido de tomateiros infectados provenientes de Bebedouro, perimetro irrigado, em Petrolina,PE. Neste estudo, avaliou-se os parametros: 1. inibicao do crescimento micelial, 2. inibicao da formacao de esclerodios e 3. habilidade de parasitismo. Os isolados TN2, TN31 e TN10 e TR40, destacaram-se por inibir maisintensamente o crescimento micelial do isolado testado, enquando que TR2 e TR50 mostraram maior interferencia na formacao de esclerodios. Em relacao a habilidade no parasitismo dos esclerodios. Em relacao a habilidade no parasitismo dos esclerodios, os isolados TN31 e T10 demosntraram maior eficiencia. Conforme os resultados obtidos a partir dos testes "in vitro", os isolados de Trichoderma e Pseudomonas spp. fluorescentes mais eficientes serao aplicados, experientalmente, a nivel de casa de vegetacao e de campo, visando-se um controle da doenca. Entre as fitobacterioses de importancia economica agricola, destacam-se por possuirem alta serevidade a murcha bacteriana e mancha bacteriana, incidindo sobre tomate, causadas por Pseudomonas solanacearum (PSOL) e Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (XCV), respectivamente, e a barriga d'agua, em melao, ocasionada por Xanthomonas campestris pv. melonis (XCM). O presente trabalho teve como objetivo observar "in vitro" a acao de alguns fungicidas e bactericidas no desenvolvimento de bacterias fitopatogenicas. Os isolados de PSOL (ST, 788, Rural e Beb), juntamente com os de XCV (Frut, OP, 270 e 208) e XCM tiveram sua sensibilidade avaliada em relacao aos seguintes produtos e concentrados de ingredientes ativos: Citrex (5.000 e 10.000 ppm), Kasugamicina (5.000 ppm e 10.000 ppm), Reconil (4.000 ppm e 8.000 ppm), Fosfato Trisodico (100.000 ppm e 200.000 ppm), Kasugaminica (5.000 ppm) + Reconil (4.000 ppm), Kasugamicina (1.000 ppm) + Reconil (8.000 ppm). Dentre as bacterias, destacaram-se como mais sensiveis aos produtos testados os isolados 270 e Frut (XCM), e 788 (PSOL), apresentando halos de inibicao correspondentes a 2,00, 1,93 e 1,37, respectivamente. Em relacao aos produtos quimicos, os melhores resultados foram proporcionados por Reconil, na dosagem mais elevada, seguida da mistura Reconil + Kasugamicina, na maior concentracao de ingredientes ativos. Abstract

Foi observado nos plantios comerciais de tomateiros, em Petrolina, PE e municipios visinhos, plantas apresentando manchas mais ou menos circulares, de cor marrom espalhadas no limbo foliar. Estas lesoes apresentavam tecido encharcado quando submetido a condicoes de alta umidade do ar. Observou-se, tambem, no peciolo e no caule, lesoes alongadas de cor marrom; nos frutos, instalou-se ainda, lesoes com coloracao marrom-clara, corticosas e co mbordos ligeiramente elevados. Estes sintomas estavam aliados aos do vira-cabeca do tomateiro, Testes de exsudacao em gota, tem indicado uma etiologia bacteriana para a enfermidade. Das lesoes, isolou-se uma bacteria de coloracao amarela, circular, convexa, lisa, inteira, viscosa, opaca, em forma de bastonete, Gram negativa, aerobica restrita, incapaz de utilizar a asparagina como fonte de C e N e capaz de produzir xantomodinas. Atraves dos testes bioquimicos realizados e analisando-se as caracteristicas culturais do isolado foi possivel classificar o fitopatogeno como sendo Xanthomonas campestris pv. vericatoria. 症例は頚部リンパ節腫脹を初発とした成人T細胞白血病(ATL)リンパ腫型の41歳男性例である.多剤併用療法・放射線照射により一時軽快したが,末期には頭部腫瘤形成,肋骨,脊椎,骨盤,四肢骨の骨融解像と病的骨折,さらに脊髄浸潤による脊髄横断症状が出現した.本例の骨病変は腫瘍細胞由来の骨吸収促進因子の関与も考えられるが,骨病変部に腫瘤形成が認められたため, ATL細胞の直接浸潤が主因と思われた.

40. Regulation of metallothionein gene expression by 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 in cultured cells and in mice.

Abstract

1 alpha,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1 alpha,25(OH)2D3], a hormonally active form of vitamin D3, has been shown to modulate cell differentiation and tumor promotion. This report demonstrates that mRNA of the metallothionein (MT) gene was induced by 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 in cultured epidermal keratinocytes and also in liver, kidney, and skin tissues when 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3, a synthetic precursor of 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3, was applied in vivo. Exposure of FRSK cells, a cell line derived from fetal rat skin keratinocytes, to 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 at 5 ng/ml (12 nM) increased MT mRNA to almost the same extent as that induced by 10 microM dexamethasone or 1 microM CdCl2. This increase in the level of MT mRNA was evident within 2 hr and was maximal 12-24 hr after the addition of 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3. The induction was dose-dependent with concentrations of 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 from 0.05 to 5.0 ng/ml. Amounts of MT increased with the increase of MT mRNA induced by 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3. Of the derivatives of vitamin D3 tested, only 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 caused marked induction. Treatment with cycloheximide did not inhibit MT mRNA induction by 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3. 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 induced MT mRNA in primary cultures of mouse epidermal keratinocytes but not in IAR-20, a liver cell line. 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3 had a similar effect in vivo: oral administration of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3 to mice resulted in increased levels of MT mRNA in the liver, kidney, and skin 24 hr later. Increase in the level of MT mRNA may be relevant to some biological actions of 1 alpha,25(OH)2D3.

Abstract

Haploid technology is a valuable plant breeding tool for obtaining homozygosity particularly in woody plants. Hazelnut, the world’s sixth ranking nut tree crop is a monoecious, anemophilous species. It is characterized by a sporophytic incompatibility system that prevents production of homozygous plants with conventional methods, involving several self-pollination cycles. In this study, gametic embryogenesis, in particular isolated microspore culture, was tried with five genotypes. Two culture media were tested and four temperature stress treatments were applied to the isolated microspores that were cultivated at the vacuolated developmental stage. To our knowledge, this is the first report of early embryos being recovered from the five hazelnut genotypes via isolated microspore culture. Analysis of the embryo genotypes using SSR markers demonstrated the embryos had a single allele per each locus whereas the parent cultivar was heterozygous, indicating they developed from haploid microspores. The response to the culture treatments, was, however, genotype-dependent, as previously reported for male gamete embryogenesis in other fruit crops.

Abstract

10 p.-5 fig.-3 tab., Microspore embryogenesis is a method of achieving complete homozygosity from plants. It is particularly useful for woody species, like Citrus, characterized by long juvenility, a high degree of heterozygosity and often self-incompatibility. Anther culture is currently the method of choice for microspore embryogenesis in many crops. However, isolated microspore culture is a better way to investigate the processes at the cellular, physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels as it avoids the influence of somatic anther tissue. To exploit the potential of this technique, it is important to separate the key factors affecting the process and, among them, culture medium composition and particularly the plant growth regulators and their concentration, as they can greatly enhance regeneration efficiency. To our knowledge, the ability of meta-Topolin, a naturally occurring aromatic cytokinin, to induce gametic embryogenesis in isolated microspores of Citrus has never been investigated. In this study, the effect of two concentrations of meta-Topolin instead of benzyladenine or zeatin in the culture medium was investigated in isolated microspore culture of two genotypes of Citrus. After 11 months of isolated microspore culture, for both genotypes and for all the four tested media, the microspore reprogramming and their sporophytic development was observed by the presence of multinucleated calli and microspore-derived embryos at different stages. Microsatellite analysis of parental and embryo samples was performed to determine the embryo alleles constitution of early embryos produced in all tested media, confirming their origin from microspores. Abstract

The general control non-repressible 5 (GCN5)-related N-acetyltransferase (GNAT) SbzI, in the biosynthesis of the sulfonamide antibiotic altemicidin, catalyzes the transfer of the 2-sulfamoylacetyl (2-SA) moiety onto 6-azatetrahydroindane dinucleotide. While most GNAT superfamily utilize acyl-coenzyme A (acyl-CoA) as substrates, SbzI recognizes a carrier-protein (CP)-tethered 2-SA substrate. Moreover, SbzI is the only naturally occurring enzyme that catalyzes the direct incorporation of sulfonamide, a valuable pharmacophore in medicinal chemistry. Here, we present the structure-function analysis and structure-based engineering of SbzI. The crystal structure of SbzI in complex with the CP SbzG, along with cross-linking and isothermal titration calorimetry analyses of their variants, revealed the structural basis for CP recognition by the GNAT SbzI. Furthermore, docking simulation, molecular dynamics simulation, and mutagenesis studies indicated the intimate structural details of the unique reaction mechanism of SbzI, which does not utilize a general base residue in contrast to other typical GNATs. 44. Healthier Lipid Profiles of Japanese Adults, Especially in Women with Elevated High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL-C), Are Associated with Low HDL-C Peroxide Content.

Abstract

Japanese adults typically have healthier lipid profiles than American and European adults and a lower prevalence and later onset of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Many Japanese also have uniquely elevated levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The following analysis examined the relationship between HDL-C level and HDL-C peroxide content, a bioindicator of unhealthy lipid metabolism in Japanese adults. Blood samples were collected from 463 participants, 31-84 years of age, who lived in Tokyo. A second blood sample was collected 5 years later from 241 of the participants, allowing us to evaluate the temporal stability of the inverse correlation between HDL-C level and HDL-C peroxide content. Glucoregulation and inflammatory activity were assessed because both can be associated with dyslipidemia and HDL-C dysfunction. Obesity and central adiposity were also considered. Overall, women had healthier HDL-C profiles than men. Elevated HDL-C (>90 mg/dL) was common (16.6%) and found more often in women. Higher HDL-C peroxide content was associated with older age and central adiposity and incremented further when HA1c and CRP were higher. When assessed 5 years later, lower HDL-C peroxide content continued to be evident in adults with higher HDL-C. While similar associations have been described for other populations, most Japanese adults typically had healthier levels of HDL-C with lower HDL-C peroxide content than previously reported for American adults.

45. Ecological factors associated with fox feces density in an Echinococcus multilocularis endemic zone in Japan.

Abstract

Introduction: Human alveolar echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus multilocularis is an important zoonotic disease in the northern hemisphere. The life cycle of E. multilocularis is maintained primarily in wild animals and requires an intermediate host (mainly small mammals). Human can become an intermediate host through accidental ingestion of E. multilocularis eggs. Hokkaido Prefecture is the only area of Japan in which human alveolar echinococcosis is endemic. The purposes of this study were to elucidate the land use ecological factors associated with the density of red fox feces along paved roads and the relationship between the distributions of red fox ( Vulpes vulpes ) populations and fox feces, which determine the level of hazard from eggs., Methods: A series of surveys was conducted in the central part of the Nemuro Peninsula of Hokkaido, excluding urban areas, over a total of 4 years in May-June in 2014 and 2016-2018 when red foxes remain with their cubs around the dens. Transects of 500 m were set up on paved roads, and feces within the transects were counted. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed to examine ecological factors including the principal components (PCs) of five land use-type occupancy proportions within 500 m and 1 km, respectively, as explanatory fixed-effect variables. The number of feces in each transect was examined as the response variable using integrated nested Laplace approximation with negative binomial errors with a spatio-temporal autocorrelations structure to separate the effects of similarities of neighboring locations and annual variation. The multivariable models with the lowest widely applicable information criterion values were selected., Results: The feces density was explained by the PC of the 500- m buffer (-0.27, 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles: -0.44, -0.10) characterized by mixed forests (-0.82) and scarcity of residential areas (0.29) and the proximity to the nearest livestock farm house (-0.35, 2.5th and 97.5th percentiles: -0.53, -0.17). Abstract

Background: Whether human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) carriers can develop sufficient humoral immunity after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination is unknown., Methods: To investigate humoral immunity after COVID-19 vaccination in HTLV-1 carriers, a multicenter, prospective observational cohort study was conducted at five institutions in southwestern Japan, an endemic area for HTLV-1. HTLV-1 carriers and HTLV-1-negative controls were enrolled for this study from January to December 2022. During this period, the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine was actively administered. HTLV-1 carriers were enrolled during outpatient visits, while HTLV-1-negative controls included health care workers and patients treated by participating institutions for diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia. The main outcome was the effect of HTLV-1 infection on the plasma anti-COVID-19 spike IgG (IgG-S) titers after the third dose, assessed by multivariate linear regression with other clinical factors., Results: We analyzed 181 cases (90 HTLV-1 carriers, 91 HTLV-1-negative controls) after receiving the third dose. HTLV-1 carriers were older (median age 67.0 vs. 45.0 years, p < 0.001) and more frequently had diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia than did HTLV-1-negative controls (60.0% vs. 27.5%, p < 0.001). After the third dose, the IgG-S titers decreased over time in both carriers and controls. Multivariate linear regression in the entire cohort showed that time since the third dose, age, and HTLV-1 infection negatively influenced IgG-S titers. After adjusting for confounders such as age, or presence of diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia between carriers and controls using the overlap weighting propensity score method, and performing weighted regression analysis in the entire cohort, both time since the third dose and HTLV-1 infection negatively influenced IgG-S titers., Conclusions: The humoral immunity after the third vaccination dose is impaired in HTLV-1 carriers; thus, customized vaccination schedules may be necessary for them., (© 2024. 47. Independent component analysis of hyperspectral data measured from overlapping latent fingermarks: Forensic potential of independent component images.

Abstract

Overlapping fingermark images are sometimes discarded because fingermark collation for the individual fingermarks is difficult. Fluorescence hyperspectral data (HSD) measured using the models of double overlapping fingermarks obtained under the excitation of a high-power, continuous wave, green laser is suitable for obtaining individual fingermark images. However, there are limitations such as the problems on each spectrum of the individual fingermark and the forensic value of the obtained images. In this study, independent component analysis (ICA) was applied to the fluorescence HSD obtained from the models of doubly overlapping fingermarks, to obtain independent component (IC) spectra and the corresponding IC images. Forensic value of the obtained IC images was examined, considering the possibility of fingermark collation in masked fashion to the model sample information. Abstract

In this study, cauda epididymal sperm were collected from Amur leopard cats with various causes of death as well as Tsushima leopard cats that underwent castration surgery, and sperm quality was compared with that in domestic cats. A sufficient number of sperm similar to those in domestic cats could be collected from the cauda epididymis of Amur leopard cats. However, in old leopard cats, no or very few cauda epididymal sperm were recovered, although there were no differences in sperm motility and sperm abnormality. There were no significant differences in sperm quality immediately after collection and after freezing-thawing of cauda epididymal sperm compared with corresponding estimates in domestic cats.

Abstract

Endogenous polyamines such as putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm) affect adipocyte differentiation. In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenously supplemented polyamines on mouse adipocyte differentiation and anti-obesity actions in vitro and in vivo. The preadipocyte cell line, 3T3-L1, was cultured with Put, Spd, or Spm, and lipid accumulation in the cells was measured by Oil Red O staining. Lipid accumulation was significantly suppressed by Spm. Suppression of CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α mRNA by Spm suggested that the decreased lipid accumulation was due to delaying the cell differentiation. The body weight and fat of obese mice induced with a high-fat diet were reduced by oral ingestion of Spm. In conclusion, oral supplementation of Spm has the ability to prevent obesity through inhibition of adipocyte differentiation.

Abstract

Differences in attitudes on social issues such as abortion, immigration and sex are hugely divisive, and understanding their origins is among the most important tasks facing human behavioural sciences. Despite the clear psychological importance of parenthood and the motivation to provide care for children, researchers have only recently begun investigating their influence on social and political attitudes. Because socially conservative values ostensibly prioritize safety, stability and family values, we hypothesized that being more invested in parental care might make socially conservative policies more appealing. Studies 1 (preregistered; n = 376) and 2 ( n = 1924) find novel evidence of conditional experimental effects of a parenthood prime, such that people who engaged strongly with a childcare manipulation showed an increase in social conservatism. Studies 3 ( n = 2610, novel data from 10 countries) and 4 ( n = 426 444, World Values Survey data) find evidence that both parenthood and parental care motivation are associated with increased social conservatism around the globe. Further, most of the positive association globally between age and social conservatism is accounted for by parenthood. These findings support the hypothesis that parenthood and parental care motivation increase social conservatism.
