Noncancerous diseases include a wide plethora of medical conditions beyond cancer and are a major cause of mortality around the world. Despite progresses in clinical research, many puzzles about these diseases remain unanswered, and new therapies are continuously being sought. The evolution of bio-nanomedicine has enabled huge advancements in biosensing, diagnosis, bioimaging, and therapeutics. The recent development of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has provided an impetus to the field of molecular bionanomaterials. Following aggregation, AIEgens show strong emission, overcoming the problems associated with the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. They also have other unique properties, including low background interferences, high signal-to-noise ratios, photostability, and excellent biocompatibility, along with activatable aggregation-enhanced theranostic effects, which help them achieve excellent therapeutic effects as an one-for-all multimodal theranostic platform. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the overall progresses in AIEgen-based nanoplatforms for the detection, diagnosis, bioimaging, and bioimaging-guided treatment of noncancerous diseases. In addition, it details future perspectives and the potential clinical applications of these AIEgens in noncancerous diseases are also proposed. This review hopes to motivate further interest in this topic and promote ideation for the further exploration of more advanced AIEgens in a broad range of biomedical and clinical applications in patients with noncancerous diseases.

Phototherapy has been a promising therapeutic modality for pathological tissue due to its spatiotemporal selectivity and non-invasive characteristics. However, as a core component of phototherapy, a single photosensitizer (PS) nanoplatform integrating excellent therapeutic efficiency and minimal side effects remains an urgent but unmet need. Here, we construct a J-aggregated nano-porphyrin termed MTE based on the self-assembly of methyl-pheophorbide a derivative MPa-TEG (MT) and natural polyphenolic compound epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Due to the synergistic interaction between similar large π-conjugated structural EGCG and MT, MTE with small and uniform size is obtained by effectively hindering Ostwald ripening of MT. Noteworthily, MTE not only effectively avoids the inadvertent side effects of phototoxicity during transport thank to the ability of reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, but also achieves two-pathway augmented superior phototherapy: (1) enhancing photodynamic therapy (PDT)

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are among the most prominent threats to the human population, our peace, and social stability. Therefore, their detection and quantification are of utmost importance to ensure the security and protection of mankind. In recent years, significant developments have been made in supramolecular chemistry, analytical chemistry, and molecular sensors, which have improved our capability to detect CWAs. Fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors are attractive tools that allow the selective, sensitive, cheap, portable, and real-time analysis of the potential presence of CWAs, where suitable combinations of selective recognition and transduction can be integrated. In this review, we provide a detailed discussion on recently reported molecular sensors with a specific focus on the sensing of each class of CWAs such as nerve agents, blister agents, blood agents, and other toxicants. We will also discuss the current technology used by military forces, and these discussions will include the type of instrumentation and established protocols. Finally, we will conclude this review with our outlook on the limitations and challenges in the area and summarize the potential of promising avenues for this field.

Theranostic, which integrates the diagnosis and tumor treatment in tandem, is an emerging strategy in cancer treatment. Here, we report a novel and unique theranostic nanoparticle, HBCP NP, based on hexa-BODIPY cyclophosphazene (HBCP). Due to the unique bulky molecular structure of HBCP, this nanoparticle can simultaneously perform near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging and photoacoustic imaging (PAI). Interestingly, since reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation of HBCP NPs is completely inhibited, 'safe' fluorescence imaging is possible without the risk of cell damage even under laser irradiation. Finally, NIR fluorescence imaging and PAI in 4T1 tumor-bearing mice demonstrated selective accumulation of HBCP NPs at tumor sites. In addition, HBCP NPs exhibited excellent photothermal effects under high-power laser irradiation, achieving effective tumor growth inhibition.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment for cancers such as superficial skin cancers, esophageal cancer, and cervical cancer. Unfortunately, PDT often does not have sufficient therapeutic benefits due to its intrinsic oxygen dependence and the limited permeability of irradiating light. Side effects from “always on” photosensitizers (PSs) can be problematic, and PDT cannot treat tumor metastases or recurrences. In recent years, supramolecular approaches using non-covalent interactions have attracted attention due to their potential in PS development. A supramolecular PS assembly could be built to maximize photodynamic effects and minimize side effects. A combination of two or more therapies can effectively address shortcomings while maximizing the benefits of each treatment regimen. Using the supramolecular assembly, it is possible to design a multifunctional supramolecular PS to exert synergistic effects by combining PDT with other treatment methods. Fluorescent probes have emerged as indispensable chemical tools to the field of chemical biology and medicine. The ability to detect intracellular species and monitor physiological processes has not only advanced our knowledge in biology but has provided new approaches towards disease diagnosis. In this review, we detail the design criteria and strategies for some recently reported fluorescent probes that can detect a wide range of biologically important species in cells and in vivo. In doing so, we highlight the importance of each biological species and their role in biological systems and for disease progression. We then discuss the current problems and challenges of existing technologies and provide our perspective on the future directions of the research area. Overall, we hope this review will provide inspiration for researchers and prove as useful guide for the development of the next generation of fluorescent probes.

Construction of an activatable photosensitizer and integration into an adaptive nanozyme during phototherapy without producing off-target toxicity remains a challenge. Herein, we have fabricated a prodrug-like supramolecular nanozyme based on a metallic-curcumin and cyanine co-assembly. The albumin-mediated phenol AOH group transformation of nanozyme changes its adjustable oxygen stress from negative superoxide dismutase-like activity of ROS-scavenging to positive photo oxidase activity with an ROS-amplifying capacity. It further increases the depth penetration of a nanozyme in a tumor spheroid, selectively targeting tumorous phototherapy. It also triggers a signal in targeted tumor cells and helps increase cancer cell ablation. This work suggests new options for development of activatable supramolecular nanozymes and provides a synergetic prodrug-like nanozyme strategy for early diagnosis and preclinical phototherapeutics.

Summary Enzymes play a key role in many bioprocesses associated with diseases, and observation of enzyme dynamics in living bodies has become meaningful for understanding enzyme function. Thus, in situ real-time fluorescence imaging can prove to be a powerful tool for monitoring enzyme dynamics, enabling detailed understanding of changes in the activity and function of enzymes. This perspective summarizes the existing methods for in situ real-time fluorescence imaging of enzymes in vivo and discusses remaining challenges. This perspective is intended to encourage chemists and chemical engineers to develop additional methods for the in situ real-time monitoring of enzymes in complex biosystems.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is an extremely critical hydrolase tightly associated with neurological diseases. Currently, developing specific substrates for imaging AChE activity still remains a great challenge due to the interference from butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and carboxylesterase (CE). Herein, we propose an approach to designing specific substrates for AChE detection by combining dimethylcarbamate choline with a self-immolative scaffold. The representative P10 can effectively eliminate the interference from CE and BChE. The high specificity of P10 has been proved via imaging AChE activity in cells. Moreover, P10 can also be used to successfully map AChE activity in different regions of a normal mouse brain, which may provide important data for AChE evaluation in clinical studies. Such a rational and effective approach can also provide a solid basis for designing probes with different properties to study AChE in biosystems and another way to design specific substrates for other enzymes., In this work, a new approach was developed for designing the representative P10 with high selectivity and sensitivity for imaging AChE activity in the cells and normal mouse brain.

A boronic acid functionalized phthalocyanine displays aggregation-enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and excellent photodynamic antibacterial activity., Most existing photosensitizers (e.g., porphyrins) are often aggregated in aqueous solution because of their large conjugated molecular structures. This aggregation usually results in a lack or low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation due to aggregation-caused quenching, which severely hampers the application of photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, we make an interesting finding that a boronic acid-functionalized phthalocyanine (PcN4-BA) displays an uncommon phenomenon, an aggregation-enhanced photodynamic effect. The combination of the ability to form uniform nanostructured self-assemblies in water, highly efficient ROS generation and boronic acid-induced targeting give PcN4-BA excellent performances in antimicrobial PDT.

In this work, we have developed an ESIPT-based benzimidazole platform (MO-E1 and MO-E2) for the two-photon cell imaging of ONOO- and a potential ONOO--activated theranostic scaffold (MO-E3). Each benzimidazole platform, MO-E1-3, were shown to rapidly detect ONOO- at micromolar concentrations (LoD = 0.28 μM, 6.53 μM and 0.81 μM respectively). The potential theranostic MO-E3 was shown to release the parent fluorophore and drug indomethacin in the presence of ONOO- but unfortunately did not perform well in vitro due to low solubility. Despite this, the parent scaffold MO-E2 demonstrated its effectiveness as a two-photon imaging tool for the ratiometric detection of endogenous ONOO- in RAW264.7 macrophages and rat hippocampus tissue. These results demonstrate the utility of this ESIPT benzimidazole-based platform for theranostic development and bioimaging applications.

Theranostics that combines both diagnosis and therapy into a single platform has recently emerged as a promising biomedical approach for cancer treatment; however, the development of efficient theranostic agents with excellent optical properties remains a challenge. Here, we report novel mitochondria-targeting BODIPY photosensitizers (R-BODs) that possess considerable singlet oxygen generation capabilities and good fluorescence properties for imaging-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT). The incorporation of sulfur atoms into the π-conjugated skeleton of BODIPY along with the introduction of different functional groups at the meso-position of the BODIPY core is essential for tuning the photophysical and photosensitizing properties. Notably, the MeOPh-substituted thiophene-fused BODIPY (MeO-BOD, R = p-methoxyphenyl) displayed the highest singlet oxygen generation capability (ΦΔ ≈ 0.85 in air-saturated acetonitrile) and a moderate fluorescence quantum yield (Φf = 17.11). Furthermore, MeO-BOD showed good biocompatibility, low dark toxicity and superior fluorescence imaging properties in living cells. More importantly, the PDT efficacy of mitochondria-specific anchoring of MeO-BOD was remarkably amplified with an extremely low half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 95 nM. We believe that the incorporation of an electron-donating group at the meso-position of the thiophene-fused BODIPY platform may be an effective approach for developing theranostic agents for precision cancer therapy., We designed and investigated novel mitochondria-targeting heavy-atom-free BODIPY photosensitizers (R-BODs) that possessed considerable singlet oxygen generation abilities and good fluorescence properties for imaging-guided photodynamic therapy (PDT).

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-based fluorophores with two-photon excitation fluorescence (TPEF) are rare. Our aim with this research was to develop ESIPT-based fluorophores exhibiting TPEF. Herein, we used 4-hydroxyisoindoline-1,3-dione as a scaffold to develop a two-photon fluorescent probe BHID-Bpin, for the detection of peroxynitrite (ONOO−). BHID-Bpin exhibits excellent selectivity, sensitivity, and fast response towards ONOO− in PBS buffer solution (10 mM, pH = 7.40). Additionally, BHID-Bpin displays high photo-stability under two-photon irradiation at 750 nm. Furthermore, the probe can image endogenous ONOO− in HeLa cells and exogenous ONOO− in rat hippocampal slices at a depth of 110 μm.

Summary Cancer is one of the world’s most serious health challenges. Several problems and challenges still exist for cancer therapies especially because anti-cancer agents that are delivered to normal cells and tissues cause a number of severe side effects. In one general approach aimed at solving this problem, supramolecular systems, created by noncovalent interactions, have been designed and utilized for cancer-cell-targeted drug delivery. In addition, cancer-associated, turn-on supramolecular theranostic agents have received great attention in the biomedicine field because they can be selectively “switched on” in cancer cells. This attribute enables the avoidance of problems associated with cytotoxic effects on healthy cells and tissues. In this review, we summarize recent progress made in the design of turn-on supramolecular theranostic agents composed of host-guest nanosystems and their applications in biomedicine.

Rhodamine spirolactam based photoswitches have been extensively applied in super-resolution single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM). However, the ring-opening reactions of spirolactams are cross-sensitive to acid, limiting their photoswitch use to neutral pH conditions. In addition, the ring-closing reactions of spirolactams are environment-sensitive and slow (up to hours), virtually making rhodamine spirolactams caged fluorescent dyes instead of reversible photoswitches in SMLM. Herein, by introducing hydrogen bonds to stabilize spirolactams, we report a series of acid-resistant rhodamine spirolactams with accelerated ring-closing reactions from fluorescent xanthyliums to non-fluorescent spirolactams, endowing them with good photoswitchable properties even in acidic environments. By further substitution of 6-phenylethynyl naphthalimide on the spirolactam, we shifted the photoactivation wavelength into the visible region (>400 nm). Subsequently, we have successfully applied these dyes in labeling and imaging the cell surface of Bacillus subtilis at pH 4.5 using SMLM.

Targeted delivery of therapeutic agents is of particular interest in the field of cancer treatment. However, there is an urgent need for developing clinically promising targeting approaches that can be readily administered in a green manner. Methods: Five phthalocyanine derivatives bearing different anionic and cationic groups were designed and synthesized. Then, their binding affinity with albumin were studied using gel assays, optical spectra and computational simulation. Finally, in vitro and in vivo fluorescence imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) evaluations were carried out. Results: The two positively charged compounds could selectively bind to albumin dimer over albumin monomer, while the three negatively charged phthalocyanines could bind to both albumin monomer and dimer. Following systemic administration, the phthalocyanines show improved tumor accumulation via transport by natural albumin. PDT evaluations indicate that one of the positively charged compounds, ZnPcN4, shows outstanding phototherapeutic efficacy against tumors in preclinical models. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that the use of water-soluble phthalocyanines as photosensitizers and in vivo albumin as a natural carrier may provide a green and efficient approach for tumor-targeted imaging and therapy.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) gram-positive bacteria are an inevitable source of infection for hospitalized patients and one of the reasons for the increased proportion of severe diseases. Therefore, constructing smart agents for specific and effective combating infections in vivo caused by MDR gram-positive strains is very urgent. Herein, we reported a structure-oriented design strategy (SODS) to reasonably construct an organic photo-antimicrobial near-infrared (NIR) AIEgen BDPTV equipped with a phenylboronic acid moiety, which could be bound to the thick peptidoglycan layer of MDR gram-positive bacteria, resulting in a tight distribution with the cell wall in a confined space. Compared to the contrast compounds DQVTA and DPTVN, upon photoirradiation of AIEgen BDPTV, the generation of abundant and highly toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) irreversibly destroys MDR gram-positive bacteria through photodynamic therapy, which is better than commercial photosensitizers (including methylene blue, chlorin e6, and protoporphyrin IX) and antibiotic (cefoxitin). As a proof of concept, in vitro experimental results showed that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) were completely killed using AIEgen BDPTV. More importantly, AIEgen BDPTV was capable of successfully combating MRSA-infected wounds of mice, but not Escherichia coli (E. coli)-infected wounds. We hope that this strategy could provide a new method to design powerful AIEgens to avoid the overuse and misuse of antibiotics.

Precise targeting with minimal side effects is of particular interest for personalized medicine, although it remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate precision photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizing human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as cellular vehicles to deliver a new activatable photosensitizer (PcS). In vivo real-time optical imaging tests indicated that PcS-loaded MSCs possess excellent tumor-homing properties. More importantly, dye transfer assays confirm that MSCs precisely transfer PcS into human colon cancer cells (HCT116) via the "bystander effect." Upon localized light irradiation, the growth of intraperitoneal xenograft tumors was significantly inhibited by the photodynamic effect. These findings represent a promising strategy for precise oncotherapy.

Activity‐based approaches for designing AIEgens possess prominent advantages including high selectivity, sensitivity, and signal‐to‐noise ratio, and they have received more attention in recent years. Excellent activatable AIE probes have been reported for detecting toxic substances, imaging intracellular active molecules/biomolecules, as well as monitoring the activity of overexpressed enzymes in cancers. Moreover, the majority of activatable theranostic AIEgens can be specifically triggered in cancer cells and can kill these cells under light irradiation, while they have no distinct effect on normal cells, demonstrating satisfactory therapeutic selectivity that is superior to that of traditional chemotherapy. Thus, in this review, we systematically summarized the development of activatable AIE bioprobes in recent years from molecular design principles to biological applications. The challenges of activatable AIE probes and the corresponding solutions are described. We hope that the information provided in this review will facilitate the design of more activatable AIE probes to promote practical application of corresponding AIEgens.

In recent years, the use of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) for biological imaging and phototherapy has become an area of intense research. However, most traditional AIEgens suffer from undesired aggregation in aqueous media with “always on” fluorescence, or their targeting effects cannot be maintained accurately in live cells with the microenvironment changes. These drawbacks seriously impede their application in the fields of bio-imaging and antitumor therapy, which require a high signal-to-noise ratio. Herein, we propose a molecular design strategy to tune the dispersity of AIEgens in both lipophilic and hydrophilic systems to obtain the novel near-infrared (NIR, ∼737 nm) amphiphilic AIE photosensitizer (named TPA-S-TPP) with two positive charges as well as a triplet lifetime of 11.43 μs. The synergistic effects of lipophilicity, electrostatic interaction, and structure-anchoring enable the wider dynamic range of AIEgen TPA-S-TPP for mitochondrial targeting with tolerance to the changes of mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Intriguingly, TPA-S-TPP was difficult for normal cells to be taken up, indicative of low inherent toxicity for normal cells and tissues. Deeper insight into the changes of mitochondrial membrane potential and cleaved caspase 3 levels further revealed the mechanism of tumor cell apoptosis activated by AIEgen TPA-S-TPP under light irradiation. With its advantages of low dark toxicity and good biocompatibility, acting as an efficient theranostic agent, TPA-S-TPP was successfully applied to kill cancer cells and to efficiently inhibit tumor growth in mice. This study will provide a new avenue for researchers to design more ideal amphiphilic AIE photosensitizers with NIR fluorescence., In this contribution, based on a “step-by-step” molecular design strategy, a novel NIR amphiphilic AIEgen TPA-S-TPP with a triplet lifetime of 11.43 μs and surmounting the shackle of MMP was successfully fabricated for amplified tumor ablation.

In this tutorial review, we will explore recent advances in the construction and application of Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based small-molecule fluorescent probes. The advantages of FRET-based fluorescent probes include: a large Stokes shift, ratiometric sensing and dual/multi-analyte responsive systems. We discuss the underlying energy donor–acceptor dye combinations and emphasise their applications for the detection or imaging of cations, anions, small neutral molecules, biomacromolecules, cellular microenvionments and dual/multi-analyte responsive systems.

Immunogenic photodynamic therapy (PDT) has the potential to moderate the shortfalls of cancer immunotherapy. However, its efficacy is severely limited particularly because of the lack of optimal photosensitizers and smart delivery processes and the inherent shortcomings of PDT (e.g., hypoxia resistance). Here, we demonstrate a clinically promising approach that utilizes a water-soluble phthalocyanine derivative (PcN4) concomitantly delivered with a hypoxia-activated prodrug (AQ4N) to amplify the effect of PDT and enhance cancer immunotherapy. After intravenous injection, PcN4 selectively interacted with endogenous albumin dimers and formed supramolecular complexes, providing a facile and green approach for tumor-targeted PDT. The concomitant delivery of AQ4N overcame the limitations of hypoxia in PDT and improved the antitumor activity of PDT. Treatment with PcN4-mediated and AQ4N-amplified PDT almost completely eradicated sizable primary tumors in a triple-negative breast cancer model and significantly activated CD8+ T cells. As the majority of tumor infiltrating CD8+ T cells were both PD-1- and TIM3-positive, additional combination therapy using PD-L1/PD-1 pathway blockade was warranted. After combination with immune checkpoint blockade treatment, an enhanced abscopal effect was achieved in both distant and metastatic tumors.

The development of fluorescent chemosensors for various analytes has been actively pursued by chemists. Since their inception, these efforts have led to many new sensors that have found wide applications in the fields of chemistry, biology, environmental science, and physiology. The search for fluorescent chemosensors was initiated by a few pioneering groups in the late 1970s and 1980s and blossomed during the last two decades to include more than hundreds of research groups around the world. The targets for these sensors vary from metal ions, anions, reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, biothiols, and toxic gases. Our group has made contributions to this area in last 18 years. In this perspective, we briefly introduce the history of chemosensors and review studies that we have carried out.

Summary Glutathione is a major endogenous antioxidant in biological systems. As a result, highly selective fluorescent probes are significant components of studies aimed at gaining a better understanding of the role(s) glutathione plays in biological functions. In this study, we developed a dual-channel turn-on fluorescent probe for glutathione, comprising naphthalimide and cyanine, bridged by a thiol-reactive sulfonamide moiety. The probe selectively responds to glutathione and is not affected by cysteine and homocysteine. Important information has been gained about the chemical mechanism for operation of the probe, which responds to glutathione in visible and near-infrared channels synchronously and independently. Moreover, this probe exhibits the remarkable capability of targeting mitochondria and dual-channel tracking of intracellular glutathione in a spatiotemporal and synchronous manner. We believe that the strategy used to design the new dual-channel fluorescence-on probe will be applicable to the design of fluorescent probes that display specific responses in multiple channels.

In this work, we synthesized a series of boronate ester fluorescence probes (E)‐4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐2‐(4‐styrylphenyl)‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolane (STBPin), (E)‐N,N‐dimethyl‐4‐(4‐(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)styryl)aniline (DSTBPin), (E)‐4‐(4‐(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)styryl)benzonitrile (CSTBPin), (E)‐2‐(4‐(4‐methoxystyryl)phenyl)‐4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolane (MSTBPin), (E)‐N,N‐dimethyl‐4‐(4‐(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)styryl)naphthalen‐1‐amine (NDSTBPin), and N,N‐dimethyl‐4‐(2‐(4‐(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborolan‐2‐yl)phenyl)oxazol‐5‐yl)aniline (DAPOX‐BPin) for the detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). DSTBPin and MSTBPin displayed an “Off–On” fluorescence response towards H2O2, owing to the loss of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) excited state. Whereas, CSTBPin displayed a decrease in fluorescence intensity in the presence of H2O2 owing to the introduction of an ICT excited state. STBPin, on the other hand, produced a small fluorescence decrease, indicating the importance of an electron‐withdrawing or electron‐donating group in these systems. Unfortunately, the longer wavelength probe, NDSTBPin, displayed a decrease in fluorescence intensity. Oxazole‐based probe DAPOX‐BPin produced a “turn‐on” response. Regrettably, DAPOX‐BPin required large concentrations of H2O2 (>3 mm) to produce noticeable changes in fluorescence intensity and, therefore, no change in fluorescence was observed in the cell imaging experiments.

Rationale: Among the biothiols-related diseases, sepsis is defined as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection and can result in severe oxidative stress and damage to multiple organs. In this study, we aimed to develop a fluorescence chemosensor that can both detect GSH and further predict sepsis. Methods: In this study, two new naphthalene dialdehyde compounds containing different functional groups were synthesized, and the sensing abilities of these compounds towards biothiols and its applications for prediction of sepsis were investigated. Results: Our study revealed that the newly developed probe 6-methoxynaphthalene-2, 3-dicarbaldehyde (MNDA) has two-photon is capable of detecting GSH in live cells with two-photon microscopy (TPM) under the excitation at a wavelength of 900 nm. Furthermore, two GSH detection probes naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde (NDA) and 6-fluoronaphthalene-2,3-dicarbaldehyde (FNDA) not only can detect GSH in living cells, but also showed clinical significance for the diagnosis and prediction of mortality in patients with sepsis. Conclusions: These results open up a promising direction for further medical diagnostic techniques.

The extreme toxicity and ready accessibility of nerve agents and phosgene has caused an increase in the demand to develop effective systems for the detection of these substances. Among the traditional platforms utilized for this purpose, chemosensors including surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors, enzymes, carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, and chromophore based sensors have attracted increasing attention. In this review, we describe in a comprehensive manner recent progress that has been made on the development of chromophore-based chemosensors for detecting nerve agents (mimic) and phosgene. This review comprises two sections focusing on studies of the development of chemosensors for nerve agents (mimic) and phosgene. In each of the sections, the discussion follows a format which concentrates on different reaction sites/mechanisms involved in the sensing processes. Finally, chemosensors uncovered in these efforts are compared with those based on other sensing methods and challenges facing the design of more effective chemosensors for the detection of nerve agents (mimic) and phosgene are discussed.
