We propose and validate a novel optical semantic transmission scheme using multimode fiber (MMF). By leveraging the frequency sensitivity of intermodal dispersion in MMFs, we achieve high-dimensional semantic encoding and decoding in the frequency domain. Our system maps symbols to 128 distinct frequencies spaced at 600 kHz intervals, demonstrating a seven-fold increase in capacity compared to conventional communication encoding. We further enhance spectral efficiency by implementing 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4), achieving 9.12 bits/s/Hz without decoding errors. Additionally, we explore the application of this system for sentiment analysis using the IMDb movie review dataset. By encoding semantically similar symbols to adjacent frequencies, the system's noise tolerance is effectively improved, facilitating accurate sentiment analysis. This work highlights the potential of MMF-based semantic communication to enhance both capacity and robustness in optical communication systems, offering promising applications in bandwidth-constrained and noisy environments.

Transformer-based deep models for single image super-resolution (SISR) have greatly improved the performance of lightweight SISR tasks in recent years. However, they often suffer from heavy computational burden and slow inference due to the complex calculation of multi-head self-attention (MSA), seriously hindering their practical application and deployment. In this work, we present an efficient SR model to mitigate the dilemma between model efficiency and SR performance, which is dubbed Entropy Attention and Receptive Field Augmentation network (EARFA), and composed of a novel entropy attention (EA) and a shifting large kernel attention (SLKA). From the perspective of information theory, EA increases the entropy of intermediate features conditioned on a Gaussian distribution, providing more informative input for subsequent reasoning. On the other hand, SLKA extends the receptive field of SR models with the assistance of channel shifting, which also favors to boost the diversity of hierarchical features. Since the implementation of EA and SLKA does not involve complex computations (such as extensive matrix multiplications), the proposed method can achieve faster nonlinear inference than Transformer-based SR models while maintaining better SR performance. We propose Diff-Shadow, a global-guided diffusion model for high-quality shadow removal. Previous transformer-based approaches can utilize global information to relate shadow and non-shadow regions but are limited in their synthesis ability and recover images with obvious boundaries. In contrast, diffusion-based methods can generate better content but ignore global information, resulting in inconsistent illumination. In this work, we combine the advantages of diffusion models and global guidance to realize shadow-free restoration. Specifically, we propose a parallel UNets architecture: 1) the local branch performs the patch-based noise estimation in the diffusion process, and 2) the global branch recovers the low-resolution shadow-free images. A Reweight Cross Attention (RCA) module is designed to integrate global contextural information of non-shadow regions into the local branch. We further design a Global-guided Sampling Strategy (GSS) that mitigates patch boundary issues and ensures consistent illumination across shaded and unshaded regions in the recovered image. Comprehensive experiments on three publicly standard datasets ISTD, ISTD+, and SRD have demonstrated the effectiveness of Diff-Shadow. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, our method achieves a significant improvement in terms of PSNR, increasing from 32.33dB to 33.69dB on the SRD dataset. Codes will be released.

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have shown promising advancements in general visual and language understanding. However, the representation of multimodal information using MLLMs remains largely unexplored. In this work, we introduce a new framework, E5-V, designed to adapt MLLMs for achieving universal multimodal embeddings. Our findings highlight the significant potential of MLLMs in representing multimodal inputs compared to previous approaches. By leveraging MLLMs with prompts, E5-V effectively bridges the modality gap between different types of inputs, demonstrating strong performance in multimodal embeddings even without fine-tuning. We propose a single modality training approach for E5-V, where the model is trained exclusively on text pairs. This method demonstrates significant improvements over traditional multimodal training on image-text pairs, while reducing training costs by approximately 95%. Additionally, this approach eliminates the need for costly multimodal training data collection. Extensive experiments across four types of tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of E5-V. Low-rank adaptation is a popular parameter-efficient fine-tuning method for large language models. In this paper, we analyze the impact of low-rank updating, as implemented in LoRA. Our findings suggest that the low-rank updating mechanism may limit the ability of LLMs to effectively learn and memorize new knowledge. Inspired by this observation, we propose a new method called MoRA, which employs a square matrix to achieve high-rank updating while maintaining the same number of trainable parameters. To achieve it, we introduce the corresponding non-parameter operators to reduce the input dimension and increase the output dimension for the square matrix. Furthermore, these operators ensure that the weight can be merged back into LLMs, which makes our method can be deployed like LoRA. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of our method across five tasks: instruction tuning, mathematical reasoning, continual pretraining, memory and pretraining. In this paper, we address the Bracket Image Restoration and Enhancement (BracketIRE) task using a novel framework, which requires restoring a high-quality high dynamic range (HDR) image from a sequence of noisy, blurred, and low dynamic range (LDR) multi-exposure RAW inputs. To overcome this challenge, we present the IREANet, which improves the multiple exposure alignment and aggregation with a Flow-guide Feature Alignment Module (FFAM) and an Enhanced Feature Aggregation Module (EFAM). Specifically, the proposed FFAM incorporates the inter-frame optical flow as guidance to facilitate the deformable alignment and spatial attention modules for better feature alignment. The EFAM further employs the proposed Enhanced Residual Block (ERB) as a foundational component, wherein a unidirectional recurrent network aggregates the aligned temporal features to better reconstruct the results. To improve model generalization and performance, we additionally employ the Bayer preserving augmentation (BayerAug) strategy to augment the multi-exposure RAW inputs. Our experimental evaluations demonstrate that the proposed IREANet shows state-of-the-art performance compared with previous methods.

The detection of the state of polarization (SOP) of light is essential for many optical applications. However, it is a challenge for cost-effective SOP measurement due to the complexity of conventional methods and poor transferability of new methods. Here, we propose a straightforward, low-cost and portable SOP measurement system based on the multimode fiber speckle. Convolutional neural network is utilized to establish the mapping relationship between speckle and Stokes parameters. The lowest root mean square error of the estimated SOP on Poincare sphere can be 0.0042. This method is distinguished by its low cost, clear structure and applicability to different wavelengths with high precision. The proposed method is of great value in polarization-related applications.

Recommendation systems (RS) have become indispensable tools for web services to address information overload, thus enhancing user experiences and bolstering platforms' revenues. However, with their increasing ubiquity, security concerns have also emerged. As the public accessibility of RS, they are susceptible to specific malicious attacks where adversaries can manipulate user profiles, leading to biased recommendations. Recent research often integrates additional modules using generative models to craft these deceptive user profiles, ensuring them are imperceptible while causing the intended harm. Albeit their efficacy, these models face challenges of unstable training and the exploration-exploitation dilemma, which can lead to suboptimal results. In this paper, we pioneer to investigate the potential of diffusion models (DMs), for shilling attacks. Specifically, we propose a novel Target-oriented Diffusion Attack model (ToDA). It incorporates a pre-trained autoencoder that transforms user profiles into a high dimensional space, paired with a Latent Diffusion Attacker (LDA)-the core component of ToDA. LDA introduces noise into the profiles within this latent space, adeptly steering the approximation towards targeted items through cross-attention mechanisms. The global horizon, implemented by a bipartite graph, is involved in LDA and derived from the encoded user profile feature. This makes LDA possible to extend the generation outwards the on-processing user feature itself, and bridges the gap between diffused user features and target item features. Extensive experiments compared to several SOTA baselines demonstrate ToDA's effectiveness. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for high-quality multi-exposure image fusion (MEF). We show that the fusion weights of an exposure can be encoded into a 1D lookup table (LUT), which takes pixel intensity value as input and produces fusion weight as output. We learn one 1D LUT for each exposure, then all the pixels from different exposures can query 1D LUT of that exposure independently for high-quality and efficient fusion. Specifically, to learn these 1D LUTs, we involve attention mechanism in various dimensions including frame, channel and spatial ones into the MEF task so as to bring us significant quality improvement over the state-of-the-art (SOTA). In addition, we collect a new MEF dataset consisting of 960 samples, 155 of which are manually tuned by professionals as ground-truth for evaluation. Our network is trained by this dataset in an unsupervised manner. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of all the newly proposed components, and results show that our approach outperforms the SOTA in our and another representative dataset SICE, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, our 1D LUT approach takes less than 4ms to run a 4K image on a PC GPU. Given its high quality, efficiency and robustness, our method has been shipped into millions of Android mobiles across multiple brands world-wide. To comprehensively assess optical fiber communication system conditions, it is essential to implement joint estimation of the following four critical impairments: nonlinear signal-to-noise ratio (SNRNL), optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), chromatic dispersion (CD) and differential group delay (DGD). However, current studies only achieve identifying a limited number of impairments within a narrow range, due to limitations in network capabilities and lack of unified representation of impairments. To address these challenges, we adopt time-frequency signal processing based on fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) to achieve the unified representation of impairments, while employing a Transformer based neural networks (NN) to break through network performance limitations. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed estimation method, the numerical simulation is carried on a 5-channel polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) long haul optical transmission system with the symbol rate of 50 GBaud per channel, the mean absolute error (MAE) for SNRNL, OSNR, CD, and DGD estimation is 0.091 dB, 0.058 dB, 117 ps/nm, and 0.38 ps, and the monitoring window ranges from 0~20 dB, 10~30 dB, 0~51000 ps/nm, and 0~100 ps, respectively. Large language models (LLMs) have recently garnered significant interest. With in-context learning, LLMs achieve impressive results in various natural language tasks. However, the application of LLMs to sentence embeddings remains an area of ongoing research. In this work, we propose an in-context learning-based method aimed at improving sentence embeddings performance. Our approach involves adapting the previous prompt-based representation method for autoregressive models, constructing a demonstration set that enables LLMs to perform in-context learning, and scaling up the LLMs to different model sizes. Through extensive experiments, in-context learning enables LLMs to generate high-quality sentence embeddings without any fine-tuning. It helps LLMs achieve performance comparable to current contrastive learning methods. By scaling model size, we find scaling to more than tens of billion parameters harms the performance on semantic textual similarity (STS) tasks. However, the largest model outperforms other counterparts and achieves the new state-of-the-art result on transfer tasks. We also fine-tune LLMs with current contrastive learning approach, and the 2.7B OPT model, incorporating our prompt-based method, surpasses the performance of 4.8B ST5, achieving the new state-of-the-art results on STS tasks. Image Quality Assessment (IQA) is a challenging task that requires training on massive datasets to achieve accurate predictions. However, due to the lack of IQA data, deep learning-based IQA methods typically rely on pre-trained networks trained on massive datasets as feature extractors to enhance their generalization ability, such as the ResNet network trained on ImageNet. In this paper, we utilize the encoder of Segment Anything, a recently proposed segmentation model trained on a massive dataset, for high-level semantic feature extraction. Most IQA methods are limited to extracting spatial-domain features, while frequency-domain features have been shown to better represent noise and blur. Therefore, we leverage both spatial-domain and frequency-domain features by applying Fourier and standard convolutions on the extracted features, respectively. Extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of all the proposed components, and results show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art (SOTA) in four representative datasets, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Our experiments confirm the powerful feature extraction capabilities of Segment Anything and highlight the value of combining spatial-domain and frequency-domain features in IQA tasks. Accurate citation count prediction of newly published papers could help editors and readers rapidly figure out the influential papers in the future. Though many approaches are proposed to predict a paper's future citation, most ignore the dynamic heterogeneous graph structure or node importance in academic networks. To cope with this problem, we propose a Dynamic heterogeneous Graph and Node Importance network (DGNI) learning framework, which fully leverages the dynamic heterogeneous graph and node importance information to predict future citation trends of newly published papers. First, a dynamic heterogeneous network embedding module is provided to capture the dynamic evolutionary trends of the whole academic network. Then, a node importance embedding module is proposed to capture the global consistency relationship to figure out each paper's node importance. Finally, the dynamic evolutionary trend embeddings and node importance embeddings calculated above are combined to jointly predict the future citation counts of each paper, by a log-normal distribution model according to multi-faced paper node representations. Deep image denoising models often rely on large amount of training data for the high quality performance. However, it is challenging to obtain sufficient amount of data under real-world scenarios for the supervised training. As such, synthesizing realistic noise becomes an important solution. However, existing techniques have limitations in modeling complex noise distributions, resulting in residual noise and edge artifacts in denoising methods relying on synthetic data. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel method that synthesizes realistic noise using diffusion models, namely Realistic Noise Synthesize Diffusor (RNSD). In particular, the proposed time-aware controlling module can simulate various environmental conditions under given camera settings. RNSD can incorporate guided multiscale content, such that more realistic noise with spatial correlations can be generated at multiple frequencies. In addition, we construct an inversion mechanism to predict the unknown camera setting, which enables the extension of RNSD to datasets without setting information. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our RNSD method significantly outperforms the existing methods not only in the synthesized noise under multiple realism metrics, but also in the single image denoising performances.

Efficient deep learning-based approaches have achieved remarkable performance in single image super-resolution. However, recent studies on efficient super-resolution have mainly focused on reducing the number of parameters and floating-point operations through various network designs. Although these methods can decrease the number of parameters and floating-point operations, they may not necessarily reduce actual running time. To address this issue, we propose a novel multi-stage lightweight network boosting method, which can enable lightweight networks to achieve outstanding performance. Specifically, we leverage enhanced high-resolution output as additional supervision to improve the learning ability of lightweight student networks. Upon convergence of the student network, we further simplify our network structure to a more lightweight level using reparameterization techniques and iterative network pruning. Meanwhile, we adopt an effective lightweight network training strategy that combines multi-anchor distillation and progressive learning, enabling the lightweight network to achieve outstanding performance. Ultimately, our proposed method achieves the fastest inference time among all participants in the NTIRE 2023 efficient super-resolution challenge while maintaining competitive super-resolution performance. Additionally, extensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed components. The results show that our approach achieves comparable performance in representative dataset DIV2K, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with faster inference and fewer number of network parameters.

Heterogeneous graph neural networks (HGNNs) have been widely applied in heterogeneous information network tasks, while most HGNNs suffer from poor scalability or weak representation when they are applied to large-scale heterogeneous graphs. To address these problems, we propose a novel Relation-aware Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network with Contrastive Learning (RHCO) for large-scale heterogeneous graph representation learning. Unlike traditional heterogeneous graph neural networks, we adopt the contrastive learning mechanism to deal with the complex heterogeneity of large-scale heterogeneous graphs. We first learn relation-aware node embeddings under the network schema view. Then we propose a novel positive sample selection strategy to choose meaningful positive samples. After learning node embeddings under the positive sample graph view, we perform a cross-view contrastive learning to obtain the final node representations. Moreover, we adopt the label smoothing technique to boost the performance of RHCO. Extensive experiments on three large-scale academic heterogeneous graph datasets show that RHCO achieves best performance over the state-of-the-art models.

To overcome the overparameterized problem in Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs), pruning is widely used as a simple and straightforward compression method by directly removing unimportant weights. Previous first-order methods successfully compress PLMs to extremely high sparsity with little performance drop. These methods, such as movement pruning, use first-order information to prune PLMs while fine-tuning the remaining weights. In this work, we argue fine-tuning is redundant for first-order pruning, since first-order pruning is sufficient to converge PLMs to downstream tasks without fine-tuning. Under this motivation, we propose Static Model Pruning (SMP), which only uses first-order pruning to adapt PLMs to downstream tasks while achieving the target sparsity level. In addition, we also design a new masking function and training objective to further improve SMP. Extensive experiments at various sparsity levels show SMP has significant improvements over first-order and zero-order methods. Unlike previous first-order methods, SMP is also applicable to low sparsity and outperforms zero-order methods. This paper reviews the challenge on constrained high dynamic range (HDR) imaging that was part of the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement (NTIRE) workshop, held in conjunction with CVPR 2022. This manuscript focuses on the competition set-up, datasets, the proposed methods and their results. The challenge aims at estimating an HDR image from multiple respective low dynamic range (LDR) observations, which might suffer from under- or over-exposed regions and different sources of noise. The challenge is composed of two tracks with an emphasis on fidelity and complexity constraints: In Track 1, participants are asked to optimize objective fidelity scores while imposing a low-complexity constraint (i.e. solutions can not exceed a given number of operations). In Track 2, participants are asked to minimize the complexity of their solutions while imposing a constraint on fidelity scores (i.e. solutions are required to obtain a higher fidelity score than the prescribed baseline). Hierarchical text classification aims to leverage label hierarchy in multi-label text classification. Existing methods encode label hierarchy in a global view, where label hierarchy is treated as the static hierarchical structure containing all labels. Since global hierarchy is static and irrelevant to text samples, it makes these methods hard to exploit hierarchical information. Contrary to global hierarchy, local hierarchy as a structured labels hierarchy corresponding to each text sample. It is dynamic and relevant to text samples, which is ignored in previous methods. To exploit global and local hierarchies,we propose Hierarchy-guided BERT with Global and Local hierarchies (HBGL), which utilizes the large-scale parameters and prior language knowledge of BERT to model both global and local hierarchies.Moreover,HBGL avoids the intentional fusion of semantic and hierarchical modules by directly modeling semantic and hierarchical information with BERT.Compared with the state-of-the-art method HGCLR,our method achieves significant improvement on three benchmark datasets., Comment: EMNLP 2022

Tailoring the degree of structural disorder in Ge-Sb-Te alloys is important for the development of non-volatile phase-change memory and neuro-inspired computing. Upon crystallization from the amorphous phase, these alloys form a cubic rocksalt-like structure with a high content of intrinsic vacancies. Further thermal annealing results in a gradual structural transition towards a layered structure and an insulator-to-metal transition. In this work, we elucidate the atomic-level details of the structural transition in crystalline GeSb2Te4 by in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) experiments and ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations, providing a comprehensive real-time and real-space view of the vacancy ordering process. We also discuss the impact of vacancy ordering on altering the electronic and optical properties of GeSb2Te4, which is relevant to multilevel storage applications. The phase evolution paths in Ge-Sb-Te alloys are illustrated using a summary diagram, which serves as a guide for designing phase-change memory devices.

We propose PromptBERT, a novel contrastive learning method for learning better sentence representation. We firstly analyze the drawback of current sentence embedding from original BERT and find that it is mainly due to the static token embedding bias and ineffective BERT layers. Then we propose the first prompt-based sentence embeddings method and discuss two prompt representing methods and three prompt searching methods to make BERT achieve better sentence embeddings. Moreover, we propose a novel unsupervised training objective by the technology of template denoising, which substantially shortens the performance gap between the supervised and unsupervised settings. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of our method. While pre-trained language models have achieved great success on various natural language understanding tasks, how to effectively leverage them into non-autoregressive generation tasks remains a challenge. To solve this problem, we present a non-autoregressive generation model based on pre-trained transformer models. To bridge the gap between autoregressive and non-autoregressive models, we propose a simple and effective iterative training method called MIx Source and pseudo Target (MIST). Unlike other iterative decoding methods, which sacrifice the inference speed to achieve better performance based on multiple decoding iterations, MIST works in the training stage and has no effect on inference time. Our experiments on three generation benchmarks including question generation, summarization and paraphrase generation, show that the proposed framework achieves the new state-of-the-art results for fully non-autoregressive models. We also demonstrate that our method can be used to a variety of pre-trained models. For instance, MIST based on the small pre-trained model also obtains comparable performance with seq2seq models.
