We demonstrate experimentally non-equilibrium transport in unipolar quasi-1D hot electron devices reaching ballistic limit. The devices are realized with heterostructure engineering in nanowires to obtain dopant- and dislocation-free 1D-epitaxy and flexible bandgap engineering. We show experimentally the control of hot electron injection with a graded conduction band profile and subsequent filtering of hot and relaxed electrons with rectangular energy barriers. The number of electron passing the barrier depends exponentially on the transport length with a mean free path of 200 - 260 nm and reaches ballistic transport regime for the shortest devices with 70 % of the electrons flying freely through the base electrode and the barrier reflections limiting the transport to the collector.

Proton beam therapy has been developed to irradiate the tumor with higher precision and dose conformity compared to conventional X-ray irradiation. The dose conformity of this treatment modality may be further improved if narrower proton beams are used. Still, this is limited by multiple Coulomb scattering of protons through tissue. The primary aim of this work was to develop techniques to produce narrow proton beams and investigate the resulting dose profiles. We introduced and assessed three different proton beam shaping techniques: 1) metal collimators (100/150~MeV), 2) focusing of conventional- (100/150~MeV), and 3) focusing of high-energy (350~MeV, shoot-through) proton beams. Focusing was governed by the initial value of the Twiss parameter $\alpha$~($\alpha_0$), and can be implemented with magnetic particle accelerator optics. The dose distributions in water were calculated by Monte Carlo simulations using Geant4, and evaluated by target to surface dose ratio (TSDR) in addition to the transverse beam size~($\sigma_T$) at the target. The target was defined as the location of the Bragg peak or the focal point. The different techniques showed greatly differing dose profiles, where focusing gave pronouncedly higher relative target dose and efficient use of primary protons. Metal collimators with radii < 2~mm gave low TSDRs (<~0.7) and large $\sigma_T$(>~3.6~mm). In contrast, a focused beam of conventional (150~MeV) energy produced a very high TSDR (>~80) with similar $\sigma_T$ as a collimated beam. High-energy focused beams were able to produce TSDRs > 100 and $\sigma_T$ around 1.5~mm. From this study, it appears very attractive to implement magnetically focused proton beams in radiotherapy of small lesions or tumors in close vicinity to healthy organs at risk. We present measurements and simulations of semiconductor-superconductor heterostructure devices that are consistent with the observation of topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. The devices are fabricated from high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases in which quasi-one-dimensional wires are defined by electrostatic gates. These devices enable measurements of local and non-local transport properties and have been optimized via extensive simulations to ensure robustness against non-uniformity and disorder. Our main result is that several devices, fabricated according to the design's engineering specifications, have passed the topological gap protocol defined in Pikulin et al. [arXiv:2103.12217]. This protocol is a stringent test composed of a sequence of three-terminal local and non-local transport measurements performed while varying the magnetic field, semiconductor electron density, and junction transparencies. Passing the protocol indicates a high probability of detection of a topological phase hosting Majorana zero modes as determined by large-scale disorder simulations. Our experimental results are consistent with a quantum phase transition into a topological superconducting phase that extends over several hundred millitesla in magnetic field and several millivolts in gate voltage, corresponding to approximately one hundred micro-electron-volts in Zeeman energy and chemical potential in the semiconducting wire. These regions feature a closing and re-opening of the bulk gap, with simultaneous zero-bias conductance peaks at both ends of the devices that withstand changes in the junction transparencies. The extracted maximum topological gaps in our devices are 20-60 $\mu$eV. Information and communications technology (ICT) within the agricultural sector is characterized by a widespread use of proprietary data formats, a strong lack of interoperability standards, and a tight connection to specific hardware implementations resulting from vendor lock-in. This partly explains why ICT has not yet had its full impact within the domain. By utilizing the vast amount of publicly available open data, ranging from topographic maps to multispectral satellite images, the economically and environmentally optimal farming practices can be advanced beyond state of the art. This paper addresses the potential of applying publicly available information sources to improve crop production, with emphasis on yield optimization. This potential is evaluated based on free public data for the growth season 2016 by examining winter wheat production for a selected region in Denmark. Data aggregation is performed by promoting opensource software tools as a foundation for decision support. That allows the farmer, or another domain expert, to query a certain crop type, merge this information with other data sets, and perform analysis on data ranging from sub-field analysis to statistics on national/regional scale. The registration of field polygons and sowed crop types for fields in Denmark, alongside with detailed geographic data and free satellite images, enable us to exploit publicly available data of high quality, which can be applied to perform further analysis., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Minimum cut/maximum flow (min-cut/max-flow) algorithms solve a variety of problems in computer vision and thus significant effort has been put into developing fast min-cut/max-flow algorithms. As a result, it is difficult to choose an ideal algorithm for a given problem. Furthermore, parallel algorithms have not been thoroughly compared. In this paper, we evaluate the state-of-the-art serial and parallel min-cut/max-flow algorithms on the largest set of computer vision problems yet. We focus on generic algorithms, i.e., for unstructured graphs, but also compare with the specialized GridCut implementation. When applicable, GridCut performs best. Otherwise, the two pseudoflow algorithms, Hochbaum pseudoflow and excesses incremental breadth first search, achieves the overall best performance. The most memory efficient implementation tested is the Boykov-Kolmogorov algorithm. Amongst generic parallel algorithms, we find the bottom-up merging approach by Liu and Sun to be best, but no method is dominant. Of the generic parallel methods, only the parallel preflow push-relabel algorithm is able to efficiently scale with many processors across problem sizes, and no generic parallel method consistently outperforms serial algorithms. Finally, we provide and evaluate strategies for algorithm selection to obtain good expected performance. Renewable energy optimisation poses computationally-intensive challenges. Yet, often the continuous nature of the decision space precludes the use of many emerging, non-von-Neumann computing platforms such as quantum annealing, which are limited to discrete problems. We propose Quantum Annealing Continuous Optimisation (QuAnCO), a Trust Region (TR)-based algorithm, where the TR Newton sub-problem is transformed into Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimisation (QUBO), thereby allowing the use of Ising solvers such as D-Wave's quantum annealer. This transformation to QUBO is done by 1) using a hyper-rectangular shape for the TR, 2) discrete representation of each continuous dimension using an interval-bounded integer, and 3) binary encoding of the resulting bounded integers. We tackle a real-world challenge of optimising the biomass mix selection for Nature Energy, the largest biogas producer in Europe, thus providing evidence of feasibility and performance advantage in using QuAnCO in green energy production, and beyond., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

We introduce a novel fine-grained dataset and benchmark, the Danish Fungi 2020 (DF20). The dataset, constructed from observations submitted to the Atlas of Danish Fungi, is unique in its taxonomy-accurate class labels, small number of errors, highly unbalanced long-tailed class distribution, rich observation metadata, and well-defined class hierarchy. DF20 has zero overlap with ImageNet, allowing unbiased comparison of models fine-tuned from publicly available ImageNet checkpoints. The proposed evaluation protocol enables testing the ability to improve classification using metadata -- e.g. precise geographic location, habitat, and substrate, facilitates classifier calibration testing, and finally allows to study the impact of the device settings on the classification performance. Experiments using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and the recent Vision Transformers (ViT) show that DF20 presents a challenging task. Interestingly, ViT achieves results superior to CNN baselines with 80.45% accuracy and 0.743 macro F1 score, reducing the CNN error by 9% and 12% respectively. A simple procedure for including metadata into the decision process improves the classification accuracy by more than 2.95 percentage points, reducing the error rate by 15%. We demonstrate first- and second-order spatial differentiation of an optical beam transverse profile using thin suspended subwavelength gratings. Highly reflective one-dimensional gratings are patterned on suspended 200 nm-thick silicon nitride membranes using Electron Beam Lithography and plasma etching. The optical transmission of these gratings, designed for illumination with either TM or TE polarized light, are experimentally measured under normal and oblique incidence and found to be in excellent agreement with the predictions of an analytical coupled-mode model as well as Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis numerical simulations. High quality first- and second-order spatial differentiation of a Gaussian beam are observed in transmission at oblique and normal incidence, respectively. Such easy-to-fabricate, ultrathin and loss-free optical components may be attractive for beam shaping and optical information processing and computing.
