Four species of aquatic mollusks, three bivalves: Anodonta cygnea, Unio pictorum and Dreissena polymorpha , and one gastropod: Viviparus viviparus were collected in a lowly polluted area and transferred to three monitoring sites, one upstream and two downstream of a chlorine bleached pulp and paper mill effluent. During the 28 days of the experiment, water, sediment and mollusks were sampled at regular intervals and analyzed for organo-halogenated residues using the sum parameters AOX and EOX. AOX concentrations in the water of the downstream sites were subjected to daily fluctuations due to the mill activity, while they remained stable in the sediments. The EOX concentrations in the mollusks exposed at the upstream site remained steady during the 28 days of exposure. Downstream, the EOX concentrations at both sites increased regularly in the four species of mollusks.

Field study allows assessment of long-term effects on fatty acid (FA) composition of organisms under chronic exposure to metals. One expected effect of copper is peroxidation of lipids and essentially polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). FA analysis was established for the amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus subjected to different degrees of copper exposure (4-40 microg Cu L(-1)). A previous study in our team showed that this species regulates its body Cu concentration (106-135 mg Cu kg(-1) dry weight). Despite the high capacity of bioaccumulation, the absence of a correlation between copper concentration in D. villosus and water prevents its use as bioindicator of copper pollution. Both sexes from the most polluted site showed the lowest total FA content, but the highest PUFA percent, mainly of the long-chained variety (C20-C22). Mechanisms leading to the prevention of lipid peroxidation in this species were discussed (metallothioneins and intracellular granules) and proposed with support from literature data.

Freshwater mussels, Anodonta cygnea L., were collected in a lowly polluted area in north-eastern France, and exposed during 28 days at three sites up and downstream of a chlorine bleached pulp and paper mill effluent. Water, sediment and mussel samples were collected at regular intervals and analyzed for halogenated organic residues using the sum parameters AOX (Adsorbable Organic Halogen) and EOX (Extractable Organic Halogen). The survey of the water showed a chronic contamination by organic halogens of the water and the sediment downstream of the pulp and paper mill sewer. Mussels exposed upstream of the mill showed no significant variation of their EOX tissue concentration. In contrast, progressive accumulation of EOX occurred with the exposure time in mussels exposed downstream of the mill. No steady state of the EOX concentration was observed after four weeks of exposure.

The study of teleost reproduction is fundamental in order to understand the future of ichthyologic populations, determinant for the balance in aquatic environments, and this, in a context of global warming which will affect distribution zones of species as well as their reproductive strategies in order to guarantee survival of their progeny. Sexual maturation in pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) has been studied in an artificial basin in north-eastern France (Mirgenbach Reservoir) which receives over-heated water from the Cattenom nuclear power plant. Pumpkinseed, a centrarchid fish specie, is native to North America but has been introduced in Europe in 1880. Since its introduction, it has colonized the entire French hydrographic network. This specie, predominantly littoral, is already established in at least 28 countries in Europe and Asia Minor, but is currently considered to be invasive mainly in southern and central Europe. In our study, the reproductive effort was studied in both sex, using gonado-somatic index (GSI) and gonadal maturity stages obtained from histological observations. Growth and longevity have also been studied. A sample of 162 females and 157 males was collected for this work. In this context of warm thermal environment, sexual maturation is precocious compared to other pumpkinseed populations located at similar latitudes (age at maturity: 1 year), and the males mature one month before the females. The juvenile growth rate is high (LT>70mm at 1 year old), except for the small male cuckolders, but longevity (3 years) is lower than at the other sites in Europe (4 to 8 years). This precocity was also observed in other species at sites receiving over-heated nuclear plant discharge water, however oocyte abnormalities were observed which was not the case for the pumpkinseed population in the Reservoir Mirgenbach. The thermal conditions of the Mirgenbach Reservoir confer to this site a good opportunity to evaluate the consequences of the Global Warming on fish biology, L'étude de la reproduction chez les téléostéens est fondamentale pour comprendre le devenir des populations ichtyologiques déterminantes pour l'équilibre des milieux aquatiques, et ce, dans un contexte de changement climatique global qui aura pour effet de modifier les aires de répartitions des espèces ainsi que leurs stratégies de reproduction afin de garantir la survie de la progéniture. La maturation sexuelle de la perche soleil (Lepomis gibbosus), à partir d'un échantillon de162 femelles et 157 mâles, a été étudiée dans une retenue artificielle du Nord-Est de la France (réservoir du Mirgenbach) recevant les eaux échauffées de la centrale électronucléaire de Cattenom. Les données acquises concernent, d'autre part, la croissance et la longévité de cette espèce dans ce cas particulier d'écosystème échauffé. Dans ce contexte, la maturation sexuelle est précoce par rapport aux autres populations de perches soleil localisées à des latitudes similaires. (Age de maturité : 1 an), et les mâles entrent en maturation un mois avant les femelles. La croissance des juvéniles est rapide (LT>70mm à 1 an), excepté chez les petits mâles cocufiants, mais la longévité (3 ans) est inférieure à celles rencontrées dans d'autres sites d'Europe (4 à 8 ans). Cette précocité a également été observée chez d'autres espèces dans des sites d'Europe recevant des eaux échauffées, cependant des anomalies ovocytaires avaient été observées, ce qui n'est pas le cas pour les individus du réservoir du Mirgenbach. De part ses conditions thermiques, le réservoir du Mirgenbach constitue un modèle intéressant pour étudier les conséquences du changement climatique global sur la biologie des poissons

Bioindicator capacity of bivalves molluscs for metal is now well know and use in biomonitoring studies. Understanding of this capacity needed a more fundamental study of metal uptake, transport and excretion pathways. Anatomical, cytological and microanalytical studies of hemocytes, pericardial gland and kidney has shown granulocyte rule in transport and detoxication functions of pericardial gland and kidney. Lysosomal system plays an important function. Metal nature changes its distribution in organs. Lead is accumulated with P, S, Ca in concretion in epithelial cells of kidney distal limb. Microanalysis was performed in this case. Possible adaptation of metallic micropolluants presence was research by hemocytes counts, enzymatic activity and phagocytosis capacities evaluation. Hemocytes number and acid phosphatases activity seem to increase but no significant modifications of phagocytosis capacities was observed. Cytological and biochemical responses of hemocytes in presence of metal can be propose of early test (7 days) of metal contamination effects in aquatics systems ; bioaccumulation levels was evaluated by transplant methods after 3 weeks, La capacité bioindicatrice des mollusques bivalves vis-à-vis des métaux est actuellement reconnue et utilisée dans le cadre du biomonitoring. La compréhension de cette capacité nécessitait une étude plus fondamentale des voies d'intoxication, de transport et d'élimination des métaux. Une étude anatomique, cytologique et microanalytique des hémocytes, de la glande péricardiale et des reins a montré le rôle des granulocytes dans le transport puis le rôle de détoxication de la glande péricardiale et des reins. Le système lysosomal joue un rôle important. La nature du métal modifie la répartition au sein des organes. Le plomb est bioconcentré en association avec P, S, Ca dans les concrétions des cellules du rein distal. La microanalyse de rayons x a été, à ce titre performante. Une adaptation éventuelle à la présence de micropolluants métalliques a été recherchée par numération des hémocytes, suivi de l'activité enzymatique et des capacités de phagocytose. Il y a tendance à l'augmentation du nombre des hémocytes ; augmentation de l'activité phosphatasique acide mais pas de modification significative de l'activité de phagocytose. Les réponses cytochimiques et biochimiques des hémocytes en présence de métaux peuvent être proposées comme méthodes d'évaluation précoce (7 jours) des effets de la contamination des eaux par les métaux ; le niveau de bioaccumulation étant évalué par la méthode des transplantations seulement après trois semaines

In Dreissena polymorpha, the LC5028d of zinc (oligo-element) is 10,9 ppm. This metal is bioaccumulated but showed little toxicity. Contamination and decontamination dynamism varies with seasons. Zinc exposure is followed by adsorption to the shell, and by adsorption and absorption in the soft part of the mussel. Analysis of the kinetic of absorption showed an exponential and diphasic process in spring, linear in winter, and very limited and triphasic in automn (saturating kinetic). Comparison of the concentration factors of different compartments, allows to establish the following organotropism/ Byssus, mantle, gills, soft part, "rest of soft part". Rate of decontamination was found very feeble in spring. In contrast, it is much more important in automn and winter. The biological half life as determined in automn is 29,5 days. The effects of biotics factors (seasons and food) and abiotics factors (EDTA, tempe rature and lead) on zinc uptake and depuration show a big ecotoxicological complexity due several interactions between these factors, zinc concentrations in the medium and exposure time. External factors produce some modification on the physico-chemistry, kinetic and ecotoxicological aspects of metallic contamination and/or decontamination. Analysis by differencial impulsion polarography made evidence of the presence of metallothionein-like proteins (PTS : sulfurated thermoresistent proteins) in both control and zinc exposed animals. PTS concentrations are about 300mg/kg weight. Exposure to zinc doesn't lead to any quantitative modification of PTS content in Dreissena. Dreissena may be used as bioindicator of metallic contamination of the freshwaters, with the best accuracy in spring, Chez Dreissena polymorpha la CL5028j du zinc (oligoélément hormétique) est évaluée à 10,9 ppm. La contamination de la Dreissène par le zinc se traduit par une adsorption métallique au niveau de la coquille et par une adsorption et absorption au niveau de la partie molle. La cinétique d'absorption est exponentielle et diphasique au printemps, linéaire en hiver, triphasique et très limitée en automne. Les facteurs de concentration du zinc ont permis d'établir l'organotropisme suivant : Byssus, Manteau, Branchies, Partie molle totale, reste de la masse viscérale. La cinétique de décontamination est presque nulle au printemps, elle est par contre beaucoup plus importante en automne-hiver. La demi-vie biologique déterminée en automne est de 29,5 jours. L'effet des facteurs biotiques (saison et nourriture) et abiotiques (EDTA, température et plomb) sur la contamination et la décontamination révèle une complexité écotoxicologique extrême due à la multitude des interactions existantes entre ces facteurs, les teneurs en zinc dans le milieu et le temps de contamination ou de décontamination. La contamination par le zinc ne modifie pas les PTS (protéines type métallothionéines). La Dreissène peut être retenue comme espèce bioindicatrice de la pollution métallique des eaux douces
