Exploring the capabilities of remote sensing technologies for identifying stress responses in trees due to environmental pressures is crucial for comprehension, management, and maintenance of forests that are productive, healthy, and resilient. In recent decades, research on forest health monitoring has been predominantly focused on data obtained remotely, either from satellites or crewed aircraft. During the last few years, Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gained prominence as invaluable remote sensing platforms, increasingly being employed for forest surveying. As intermediary between traditional remote sensing methods and ground-level observations, UAVs can capture high-resolution imagery from low altitudes, even below cloud cover, in unprecedented detail. This ability allows for the precise detection of stress responses at the individual tree scale. In our study, we have acquired a highly heterogenous, multispectral time-series dataset from the International Co-operative Programme on Assessment and Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Forests (ICP Forests) inventory plots across Bavaria, Germany, focusing on the main tree species. The data was recorded over three consecutive years from a UAV with the objective of monitoring tree physiological stress responses. Concurrently, with the drone flights, the ground-based forest condition surveying (Level-1 monitoring) was conducted, serving as ground-truth validation, and providing detailed information on tree health indicators, such as defoliation and discoloration. Our findings revealed that multispectral imagery obtained from a UAV closely aligns with field data, proving effective detection of physiological stress in trees. Remarkably, in conjunction to the red, red edge, and near-infrared band, the inclusion of the blue band emerged as a critical indicator of tree stress when incorporated into the Blue Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (BNDVI), depending on factors such as tree species, class division, and atmospheric conditions. Furthermore, the averaged values per sample tree over three years, alongside the 5th and 25th percentile of the data distribution, have proven to be of key importance. Based on spectral indices, we achieved good classification accuracies by training species-specific gradient boosting models (macro F1-scores ranging from 0.492 to 0.769). These models can assist in quantifying tree stress responses, thereby supporting the objectives of the ICP Forests program, potentially leading to substantial cost savings or increased coverage in the future.

Monitoring tree diseases in forests is crucial for managing pathogens, particularly as climate change and globalization lead to the emergence and spread of tree diseases. Object detection algorithms for monitoring tree diseases through remote sensing rely on bounding boxes to represent trees. However, this approach may not be the most efficient. Our study proposed a solution to this challenge by applying object detection to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based imagery, using point labels that were converted into equally sized square bounding boxes. This allowed for effective and extensive monitoring of black pine (Pinus nigra L.) trees with vitality-related damages. To achieve this, we used the “You Only Look Once’’ version 5 (YOLOv5) deep learning algorithm for object detection, alongside a 16 by 16 intersection over union (IOU) and confidence threshold grid search, and five-fold cross-validation. Our dataset used for training and evaluating the YOLOv5 models consisted of 179 images, containing a total of 2374 labeled trees. Our experiments revealed that, for achieving the best results, the constant bounding box size should cover at least the center half of the tree canopy. Moreover, we found that YOLOv5s was the optimal model architecture. Our final model achieved competitive results for detecting damaged black pines, with a 95% confidence interval of the F1 score of 67–77%. These results can possibly be improved by incorporating more data, which is less effort-intensive due to the use of point labels. Additionally, there is potential for advancements in the method of converting points to bounding boxes by utilizing more sophisticated algorithms, providing an opportunity for further research. Overall, this study presents an efficient method for monitoring forest health at the single tree level, using point labels on UAV-based imagery with a deep learning object detection algorithm.

In recent years, technological advances have led to the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for forestry applications. One emerging field for drone application is forest health monitoring (FHM). Common approaches for FHM involve small-scale resource-extensive fieldwork combined with traditional remote sensing platforms. However, the highly dynamic nature of forests requires timely and repetitive data acquisition, often at very high spatial resolution, where conventional remote sensing techniques reach the limits of feasibility. UAVs have shown that they can meet the demands of flexible operation and high spatial resolution. This is also reflected in a rapidly growing number of publications using drones to study forest health. Only a few reviews exist which do not cover the whole research history of UAV-based FHM. Since a comprehensive review is becoming critical to identify research gaps, trends, and drawbacks, we offer a systematic analysis of 99 papers covering the last ten years of research related to UAV-based monitoring of forests threatened by biotic and abiotic stressors. Advances in drone technology are being rapidly adopted and put into practice, further improving the economical use of UAVs. Despite the many advantages of UAVs, such as their flexibility, relatively low costs, and the possibility to fly below cloud cover, we also identified some shortcomings: (1) multitemporal and long-term monitoring of forests is clearly underrepresented; (2) the rare use of hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors must drastically increase; (3) complementary data from other RS sources are not sufficiently being exploited; (4) a lack of standardized workflows poses a problem to ensure data uniformity; (5) complex machine learning algorithms and workflows obscure interpretability and hinders widespread adoption; (6) the data pipeline from acquisition to final analysis often relies on commercial software at the expense of open-source tools.

Policy makers, government planners and agricultural market participants in Pakistan require accurate and timely information about wheat yield and production. Punjab Province is by far the most important wheat producing region in the country. The manual collection of field data and data processing for crop forecasting by the provincial government requires significant amounts of time before official reports can be released. Several studies have shown that wheat yield can be effectively forecast using satellite remote sensing data. In this study, we developed a methodology for estimating wheat yield and area for Punjab Province from freely available Landsat and MODIS satellite imagery approximately six weeks before harvest. Wheat yield was derived by regressing reported yield values against time series of four different peak-season MODIS-derived vegetation indices. We also tested deriving wheat area from the same MODIS time series using a regression-tree approach. Among the four evaluated indices, WDRVI provided more consistent and accurate yield forecasts compared to NDVI, EVI2 and saturation-adjusted normalized difference vegetation index (SANDVI). The lowest RMSE values at the district level for forecast versus reported yield were found when using six or more years of training data. Forecast yield for the 2007/2008 to 2012/2013 growing seasons were within 0.2% and 11.5% of final reported values. Absolute deviations of wheat area and production forecasts from reported values were slightly greater compared to using the previous year's or the three- or six-year moving average values, implying that 250-m MODIS data does not provide sufficient spatial resolution for providing improved wheat area and production forecasts.

There is a need to validate existing global cropland maps since they are used for different purposes including agricultural monitoring and assessment. In this paper we validate three recent global products (ESA-CCI, GlobeLand30, FROM-GC) and one regional product (Tanzania Land Cover 2010 Scheme II) using a validation data set that was collected by students through the Geo-Wiki tool. The ultimate aim was to understand the usefulness of these products for agricultural monitoring. Data were collected wall-to-wall for Kilosa district and for a sample across Tanzania. The results show that the amount of and spatial extent of cropland in the different products differs considerably from 8% to 42% for Tanzania, with similar values for Kilosa district. The agreement of the validation data with the four different products varied between 36% and 54% and highlighted that cropland is overestimated by the ESA-CCI and underestimated by FROM-GC. The validation data were also analyzed for consistency between the student interpreters and also compared with a sample interpreted by five experts for quality assurance. Regarding consistency between the students, there was more than 80% agreement if one difference in cropland category was considered (e.g., between low and medium cropland) while most of the confusion with the experts was also within one category difference. In addition to the validation of current cropland products, the data set collected by the students also has potential value as a training set for improving future cropland products.
