Abstract: Data from the NA31 experiment at CERN have been used for a search for the decay mode K L → π 0 π 0 γ . After all cuts, three events remain in the signal region with an estimated background of 2.2 ± 0.9 events. The upper limit for the branching ratio of K L → π 0 π 0 γ is 5.6 × 10 −6 at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We present a new determination of the Ds decay constant, f_{Ds} using 5 million continuum charm events obtained with the CLEO II detector. Our value is derived from our new measured ratio of widths for Ds -> mu nu/Ds -> phi pi of 0.173+/- 0.021 +/- 0.031. Taking the branching ratio for Ds -> phi pi as (3.6 +/- 0.9)% from the PDG, we extract f_{Ds} = (280 +/- 17 +/- 25 +/- 34){MeV}. Abstract: Using 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data taken with the CLEO II detector, the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+\to\pi^0\ell^+\nu$ measured relative to the Cabibbo favored decay $D^+\to\bar{K^0}\ell^+\nu$ is found to be $0.046\pm 0.014\pm 0.017$. Using $V_{cs}$ and $V_{cd}$ from unitarity constraints, we determine $| f_+^{\pi}(0)/f_+^K(0)|^2=0.9\pm 0.3\pm 0.3$ We also present a 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $D^+ \to \eta e^+\nu_e$ relative to that for $D^+ \to \pi^0 e^+\nu_e$ of 1.5.

Abstract: Using the CLEO~II detector, we have measured the differential cross sections for exclusive two-photon production of light pseudoscalar mesons $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$. From our measurements we have obtained the form factors associated with the electromagnetic transitions $\gamma^*\gamma$ $\to$ meson. We have measured these form factors in the momentum transfer ranges from 1.5 to 9, 20, and 30 GeV$^2$ for $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$, respectively, and have made comparisons to various theoretical predictions., Comment: 30 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

No evidence for a signal is found in 4.77fb−1 of data and a 95% C.L. upper limit on [τγγBπ+π−]fJ(2220) of 2.5 eV is set. If this result is combined with the BES Collaboration's measurement of fJ(2220)→π+π− in radiative J/Ψ decay and the recent CLEO result for [τγγBK0SK0S]fJ(2220), a 95% C.L. lower limit on the stickiness of 102 is obtained. This result for the stickiness provides further support for a substantial neutral parton content in the fJ(2220). © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: We report the first observation of B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X transitions with high momentum {eta}{sup {prime}} mesons. We observe 39.0{plus_minus}11.6 B decay events with 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c , the high momentum region where background from b{r_arrow}c processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to b{r_arrow}sg{sup {asterisk}} transitions. Given that interpretation, we find B(B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X{sub s} )=[6.2{plus_minus}1.6(stat){plus_minus} 1.3(syst){sup +0.0}{sub {minus}1.5} (bkg)]{times}10{sup {minus}4} for 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c . {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society }

Abstract: We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including $\omega$ or $\phi$ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of $6.6 \times 10^6$ B mesons we observe a signal for the $\omega K^+$ final state, and measure a branching fraction of B($B^+ \to \omega K^+$) = 1.5 +0.7 -0.6 +-0.2 $\times 10^{-5}$. We also observe some evidence for the $\phi K^*$ final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity for studies of theoretical models and physical parameters.

Abstract: We have observed the decay ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+}$, using $3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find the ratio of branching fractions $R\ensuremath{\equiv}B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+})/B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.055\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$.

Abstract: We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract: We have observed a signal for the decay D^(*+)→D^+γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D^(*+)→D^+γ)/B(D^(*+)→D^+π^0) = 0.055±0.014±0.010 we find B(D^(*+)→D^+γ) = 0.017±0.004±0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D^(*+) branching fractions.

Abstract: Using 3.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at the $\Upsilon$(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, corresponding to 3.3 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, we have searched for the color-suppressed $B$ hadronic decay processes: $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 (D^{*0}) X^0$, where $X^0$ is a light neutral meson $\pi^0$, $\rho^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$ or $\omega$. No obvious signal is observed. We set 90 % C.L. upper limits on these modes, varying from $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^0$ to $1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0} \eta'$.

Abstract: The CLEO detector is undergoing major improvements in conjunction with a high luminosity upgrade of the CESR e+e− collider. A novel element is a state of the art particle identification system, based on a proximity focused Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector. This detector will provide an excellent hadron identification at all the momenta relevant to the study of the decays of B mesons produced at the ϒ(4S) resonance. Some features unique to our design will be discussed together with some results achieved on individual components.

Abstract: In a sample of 6.6×10^6 produced B mesons we have observed decays B→η′K, with branching fractions B(B^+→η′K^+) = (6.5_(-1.4)^(+1.5)±0.9)×10^(-5) and B(B^0→η′K^0) = (4.7_(-2.0)^(+2.7)±0.9)×10^(-5). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B→η′K signal.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D^0→K^-π^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain B →D^(*+)Xl^-ν , D^(*+)→D^0π^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D^(*+) are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined B(D^0→K^-π^+) = [3.81±0.15(stat)±0.16(syst)]%.

Abstract: We have searched for the decay $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}(2536)X$ and measured an upper limit for the inclusive branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}X)l0.96%$ at the 90% confidence level. This limit is small compared with the total expected $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}^{(*)}{D}^{(*)}\mathrm{KX}$ rate. Assuming factorization, the ${D}_{s1}^{+}$ decay constant is constrained to be ${f}_{{D}_{s1}^{+}}$114 MeV at the 90% confidence level, at least 2.5 times smaller than that of ${D}_{s}^{+}$.

Abstract: The decays ϒ(4S)→BB , followed by B→D^*π and D^*→Dπ, permit reconstruction of all kinematic quantities that describe the sequence without reconstruction of the D, with reasonably low backgrounds. Using an integrated e^+e^- luminosity of 3.1 fb^(-1) accumulated at the ϒ(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, we report measurements of B(B ^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (2.81±0.11±0.21±0.05)×10^(-3) and B(B-→D^*0π^-) = (4.34±0.33±0.34±0.18)×10^(-3).

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R≡σ(e^+e^-→hadrons)/σ(e^+e^-→μ^+μ^-)=3.56±0.01±0.07 at √s=10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of α_s(10.52 GeV)=0.20±0.01±0.06, or α_s(MZ)=0.13±0.005±0.03.

Abstract: The full data set of the NA31 experiment at CERN has been used to analyse the decay mode KOL → e+ e-γγ. A signal of 47 events has been observed with an estimated background of 6.9 events. The total number of kaon decays in the decay volume was determined to be (2.1 ± 0.1stat) · 109. This corresponds to a branching ratio of (8.0 ± 1.5+1.4-1.2)· 10-7. © 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present the first full angular analysis in the color-suppressed modes B{sup 0}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *0} and B{sup +}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *+}. This leads to a complete determination of the decay amplitudes of these modes including the longitudinal polarization {Gamma}{sub L}/{Gamma}=0.52{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.04 and the P wave component {vert_bar}P{vert_bar}{sup 2}=0.16{plus_minus}0.08{plus_minus}0.04. In addition, we update the branching fractions for B{r_arrow}J/{psi}K and B{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *}. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup + }3{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been studied with the CLEOII detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85{plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.51){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the conserved-vector-current prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0 }{omega}{nu}{sub {tau}} , 2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} , and {pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} . This is the first observation of this {omega} decay mode and the branching fraction is measured to be (1.89{sup +0.74}{sub {minus}0.67}{plus_minus}0.40) {times}10{sup {minus}4} . {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K{sub s}K{sub s} branching fraction, ({Gamma}{sub {gamma}{gamma}}B{sub K{sub s}K{sub s}}){sub f{sub J(2220) }} . We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring CESR, we present the first observation of B mesons decaying into the charmed strange baryons Xi_c0 and Xi_c+. We find 79 +/- 27 Xi_c0 and 125 +/- 28 Xi_c+ candidates from B decays, leading to product branching fractions of BR(Bbar -> Xi_c0 X)BR(Xi_c0 -> Xi- pi+) = (0.144 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.021) x 10^-3 and BR(Bbar -> Xi_c+ X)BR(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = (0.453 +/- 0.096 +0.085-0.065) x 10^-3.

Abstract: We have searched for the rare decay of the eta meson $\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}$ using the CLEO II detector. The $\eta$'s were produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction $B(\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}) < 7.7\times 10^{-5}$. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about $10^{-9}$.

Abstract: A search for the decay of the tau lepton to seven charged pions and one or zero pizero mesons was performed using the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The analysis uses 232.2 fb-1 of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the Y(4S) resonance. We observe 24 events with an expected background of 21.6+-1.3 events. Without evidence for a signal, we calculate an upper limit of BR(tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ (pizero) nu_tau) 4pi- 3pi+ nu_tau and tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ pizero nu_tau.

Abstract: We report new measurements of the differential and total branching ratios for inclusive B decay to D{sup 0}, D{sup +}, and D{sup *+} and the first measurement of the same quantities for inclusive B decay to D{sup *0}. Here B is the mixture of B{sub d} and B{sub u} from {Upsilon}(4S) decay. Furthermore, since more than one charm particle (or antiparticle) of the same kind can be produced in B decay, here {open_quotes}inclusive B branching ratio{close_quotes} is used to mean the average number of charm particles and their antiparticles of a certain species produced in B decay. We obtain the following results (the first error is statistical, the second systematic of this analysis, the third propagated from other measurements): B(B{r_arrow}D{sup 0}X)=(0.636{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0.019{plus_minus}0.0 8), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup +}X)=(0.235{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.024), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X) =(0.247{plus_minus}0.012{plus_minus}0.018{plus_minus}0.018), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(0.239{plus_minus}0.011{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0. 09). The following ratio of branching ratios is not affected by most of the systematic errors: B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X)/ B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(1.03{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.09{plus_minus}0.08). We also report the first measurement of the momentum-dependent D{sup *0} polarization and a new measurement of the D{sup *+} polarization in inclusive B decay. Abstract: We have observed new channels for $\ensuremath{\tau}$ decays with an $\ensuremath{\eta}$ in the final state. We study 3-prong tau decays, using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay modes and 1-prong decays with two ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$'s using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ channel. The measured branching fractions are $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({3.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5}^{+0.6}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}2{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We observe clear evidence for ${f}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ substructure and measure $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{1}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({5.8}_{\ensuremath{-}1.3}^{+1.4}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We have also searched for ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(958)$ production and obtain 90% C.L. upper limits $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l7.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l8.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$.

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of {Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}, making the first observation of {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}. We present the cross section for {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}} as a function of the {gamma}{gamma} center of mass energy and compare it to that predicted by the quark-diquark model. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R{sub chrg} for the mean charged multiplicity observed in {Upsilon}(1S){r_arrow}gg{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}. We find R{sub chrg}{equivalent_to}{l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}/{l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}=1.04 {plus_minus}0.02(stat){plus_minus}0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for the decays $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in a sample of $2.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays collected with the CLEO II detector. In the muon channel, we observe no candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma})l5.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level. In the electron channel, we observe five candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma})l2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the magnitude of the {nu}{sub {tau}} helicity from {tau}-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each {tau} undergoes the decay {tau}{r_arrow}h{nu}, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding {vert_bar}{xi}{sub h}{vert_bar} = 1.03{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: ${R}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{gg})/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{ggg})=[2.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15(\mathrm{syst})]%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}=233\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)})=0.163\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, or ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{Z})=0.110\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$.

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present new measurements of the branching fractions for D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}K{sup +} and D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}{pi}{sup +}. These results are combined with other CLEO measurements to extract the ratios of isospin amplitudes and phase shifts for D {yields} KK and D {yields} K{pi}.

Eight events have been found with negligible background. Abstract: Data from the NA31 experiment at the CERN SPS have been used for the first search for the decay mode KL → 3γ. Seven events have been found with an estimated background of 6.7 ± 1.5 events. The corresponding upper limit for the branching ratio is Γ(K L → 3γ) Γ(K L → all ) = 2.4 × 10 −7 at the 90% confidence level, assuming a phase-space decay distribution.

Abstract: Data from NA31 experiment at CERN have been used to measure the decay KS → γγ. From 69 candidate events of the type K0 → γγ, 52 events can be attributed to KL → γγ and one event is expected from background processes. The ratio of the relative decay widths R = Γ(KS → γγ)Γ(KL → γγ) is measured to be R = 2.2 ± 1.0(stat.) ± 0.3(syst.) ± 0.2(ext.) where the external systematic error is due to the experimental uncertainty in the branching ratio of the decay KL → γγ. This translates into a branching ratio of BR(KS → γγ) = (2.2 ± 1.1) × 10−6. If these data are combined with the published data from an earlier data taking period with the same experiment, the ratio R is determined to be R = 2.35 ± 0.75(stat.) ± 0.4(syst.) + 7.5 · (1 − BR(KL → γγ)5.86 × 10−4) where the last term accounts for the dependence on the measured KL → γγ branching ratio. The corresponding branching ratio for KS → γγ is BR(KS → γγ) = (2.4 ± 0.9) × 10−6. The measurement is a sensitive test of chiral perturbation theory and in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract: We present new measurements of photon energies and branching fractions for the radiative transitions {Upsilon}(2S){r_arrow}{gamma}{chi}{sub b(J=0,1,2)}(1P). The masses of the {chi}{sub b} states are determined from the measured radiative photon energies. The ratio of mass splittings between the {chi}{sub b} substates, r{equivalent_to}(M{sub J=2}{minus}M{sub J=1})/(M{sub J=1}{minus}M{sub J=0}), with M the {chi}{sub b} mass, provides information on the nature of the b{bar b} confining potential. We find r(1P)=0.542{plus_minus}0.022{plus_minus}0.024. This value is somewhat lower than the previous world average, but more consistent with the theoretical expectation that r(1P){lt}r(2P); i.e., that this mass splitting ratio is smaller for the {chi}{sub b}(1P) states than for the {chi}{sub b}(2P) states. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The CLEO collaboration is preparing a major upgrade of its present detector including a RICH detector for particle identification. This subdetector system follows the 'proximity focussing' design and uses Lithium Fluoride (LiF) crystal radiators and MWPCs filled with a CH4/TEA gas mixture. Part of the radiator crystals will have the new 'sawtooth' geometry. We have tested the first two of the 30 detector modules together with the first radiator crystals in a muon halo beam at Fermilab. For the measurement of the Cherenkov angle we obtain a single photon measurement error of 13.5 mrad for the conventional planar radiator. With 14 detected photons we find a resolution per track of 4.5 mrad. In the first measurement ever of a 'sawtooth' radiator we achieve a resolution of 11.8 mrad for single photons and 4.8 mrad per track for 12.3 detected photons with a reduced geometric acceptance. Abstract: Using a data sample with integrated luminosity of about 3.9 fb^{-1} collected in e+ e- annihilation with the CLEO-II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have measured the branching ratios for the decay modes Ds -> (eta, eta') pi and Ds -> (eta, eta') rho relative to Ds -> phi pi. These decay modes are among the most common hadronic decays of the Ds's and can be related by factorization to the semileptonic decays Ds -> (eta,eta') l nu. The results obtained are compared with previous CLEO results and with the branching ratios measured for the related semileptonic decays. We also report results on the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of the D+ to the same final states.

Abstract: A measurement of the spin alignment of charged D^* mesons produced in continuum e^+ e^- \to c \bar{c} events at \sqrt{s}=10.5 GeV is presented. This study using 4.72 fb^{-1} of CLEO II data shows that there is little evidence of any D^* spin alignment.

Abstract: Using data collected by the CLEO II detector at the center-of-mass energy on or near the Upsilon(4S) resonance, we have determined the 90% confidence level upper limit B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ e- X)/B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ X, Lambdabar_c^- X) < 0.05 for electrons with momentum above 0.6 GeV/c. We have also derived the ratio B(B^- --> Lambda_c^+ pbar e- nubar_e)/B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ pbar X) < 0.04 at the 90% confidence level and measured the ratio B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ pbar X)/B(Bbar --> Lambda_c^+ X, Lambdabar_c^- X) = 0.57 +- 0.05 +- 0.05., 9 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Abstract: A precision measurement of the KS mean lifetime has been performed by comparing, in the same experimental setup, the distributions of two-pion decays of neutral kaons produced by high energy proton-beryllium interactions in two targets at a relative distance variable between 112 and 160 m. The value obtained combining the results from π+π- and π0π0 decays is τS = (0.8971 ± 0.0021) 10-10 s. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

Abstract: We have made a first measurement of the lepton momentum spectrum in a sample of events enriched in neutral B's through a partial reconstruction of B0 --> D*- l+ nu. This spectrum, measured with 2.38 fb**-1 of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance by the CLEO II detector, is compared directly to the inclusive lepton spectrum from all Upsilon(4S) events in the same data set. These two spectra are consistent with having the same shape above 1.5 GeV/c. From the two spectra and two other CLEO measurements, we obtain the B0 and B+ semileptonic branching fractions, b0 and b+, their ratio, and the production ratio f+-/f00 of B+ and B0 pairs at the Upsilon(4S). We report b+/b0=0.950 (+0.117-0.080) +- 0.091, b0 = (10.78 +- 0.60 +- 0.69)%, and b+ = (10.25 +- 0.57 +- 0.65)%. b+/b0 is equivalent to the ratio of charged to neutral B lifetimes, tau+/tau0., 14 page, postscript file also available at http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Abstract: Neutrinoless 3-prong tau lepton decays into a charged lepton and either two charged particles or one neutral meson have been searched for using 4.79 fb^{-1} of data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR. This analysis represents an update of a previous study and the addition of six decay channels. In all channels the numbers of events found are compatible with background estimates and branching fraction upper limits are set for 28 different decay modes. Abstract: Using the CLEO II detector at the $e^+e^-$ storage ring CESR, we have determined the Michel parameters $\rho$, $\xi$, and $\delta$ in $\tau^\mp \to l^\mp\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay as well as the tau neutrino helicity parameter $h_{\nu_\tau}$ in $\tau^\mp \to \pi^\mp\pi^0\nu$ decay. From a data sample of $3.02\times 10^6$ tau pairs produced at $\sqrt{s}=10.6 GeV$, using events of the topology $e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^- \to (l^\pm\nu\bar{\nu}) (\pi^\mp\pi^0\nu)$ and $e^+e^- \to \tau^+\tau^- \to (\pi^\pm\pi^0\bar{\nu}) (\pi^\mp\pi^0\nu)$, and the determined sign of $h_{\nu_\tau}$, the combined result of the three samples is: $\rho = 0.747\pm 0.010\pm 0.006$, $\xi = 1.007\pm 0.040\pm 0.015$, $\xi\delta = 0.745\pm 0.026\pm 0.009$, and $h_{\nu_\tau} = -0.995\pm 0.010\pm 0.003$. Abstract: The branching fractions for τ→eνντ, μνντ, and hντ are measured using data collected with the CLEO detector at the CESR e+e- collider: Be=0.1776±0.0006±0.0017, Bμ=0.1737±0.0008±0.0018, and Bh=0.1152±0.0005±0.0012, where the first error is statistical, the second systematic, and h refers to either a charged π or K. Also measured is the τ mass, mτ=(1778.2±1.4) MeV. Lepton universality is affirmed by the relative branching fractions (Bμ/Be=0.9777±0.0063±0.0087, Bh/Be=0.6484±0.0041±0.0060) and the charged-current gauge coupling-constant ratios (gμ/ge=1.0026±0.0055, gτ/gμ=0.9990±0.0098). The τ mass result may be recast as a τ neutrino mass limit, mντ

Abstract: Data from the NA31 experiment at CERN have been used to measure the decay K L → π ± e ± νγ ( K e 3 γ 0 ). 1384 ± 53 events of this decay type have been observed. The decay rate relative to K e 3 0 is found to be Γ(K e3γ 0 , E γ ∗ ≥ 30 MeV , Θ e-γ ∗ ≥ 20°) Γ(K e3 0 ) = (0.934 ± 0.036 ( stat. ) −0.039 +0.055 ( syst. )) % which corresponds to a branching ratio of BR (K e3γ 0 , E γ ∗ ≥ 30 MeV , Θ e-γ ∗ ≥ 20°) = (0.361 ± 0.014 ( stat. ) −0.015 +0.021 ( syst. )) %. The result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The decay K L → π ± e ± νγ is found to be dominated by internal bremsstrahlung.
