1. Laser-driven ion and electron acceleration from near-critical density gas targets: Towards high-repetition rate operation in the 1 PW, sub-100 fs laser interaction regime

Abstract

Ion acceleration from gaseous targets driven by relativistic-intensity lasers was demonstrated as early as the late 1990s, yet most of the experiments conducted to date have involved picosecond-duration, Nd:glass lasers operating at low repetition rate. Here, we present measurements on the interaction of ultraintense (≈10^{20}Wcm^{−2}, 1 PW), ultrashort (≈70fs) Ti:Sa laser pulses with near-critical (≈10^{20}cm^{−3}) helium gas jets, a debris-free targetry with the potential for future compatibility with high (≈1 Hz) repetition rate operation. We provide evidence of α particles being forward accelerated up to ≈2.7-MeV energy with a total flux of ≈10^{11}sr^{−1} as integrated over >0.1-MeV energies and detected within a 0.5-mrad solid angle. We also report on on-axis emission of relativistic electrons with an exponentially decaying spectrum characterized by a ≈10-MeV slope, i.e., five times larger than the standard ponderomotive scaling. The total charge of these electrons with energy above 2 MeV is estimated to be of ≈1nC, corresponding to ≈0.1% of the laser drive energy. In addition, we observe the formation of a plasma channel, extending longitudinally across the gas density maximum and expanding radially with time. These results are well captured by large-scale particle-in-cell simulations, which reveal that the detected fast ions most likely originate from reflection off the rapidly expanding channel walls. The latter process is predicted to yield ion energies in the MeV range, which compare well with the measurements. Finally, direct laser acceleration is shown to be the dominant mechanism behind the observed electron energization.

Abstract

Understanding the physics of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) emission and nozzle damage is critical for the long-term operation of laser experiments with gas targets, particularly at facilities looking to produce stable sources of radiation at high repetition rates. We present a theoretical model of plasma formation and electrostatic charging when high-power lasers are focused inside gases. The model can be used to estimate the amplitude of gigahertz EMPs produced by the laser and the extent of damage to the gas jet nozzle. Looking at a range of laser and target properties relevant to existing high-power laser systems, we find that EMP fields of tens to hundreds of kV/m can be generated several metres from the gas jet. Model predictions are compared with measurements of EMPs, plasma formation and nozzle damage from two experiments on the VEGA-3 laser and one experiment on the Vulcan Petawatt laser.

Abstract

The design, realization and operation of a prototype or “demonstrator” version of an active target and time projection chamber (ACTAR TPC) for experiments in nuclear physics is presented in detail. The heart of the detection system features a micromegas gas amplifier coupled to a high-density pixelated pad plane with square pad sizes of 2 × 2 mm 2 . The detector has been thoroughly tested with several different gas mixtures over a wide range of pressures and using a variety of sources of ionizing radiation including laser light, an α -particle source and heavy-ion beams of 24Mg and 58Ni accelerated to energies of 4.0 MeV/u. Results from these tests and characterization of the detector response over a wide range of operating conditions will be described. These developments have served as the basis for the design of a larger detection system that is presently under construction.

Abstract

International audience; For most laser-driven ion acceleration applications, a well-characterized intense ion beam with a low divergence and a controllable energy spectrum produced at a high repetition rate is needed. Gas-jet targets have given promising results in simulations, and they have several technical advantages for high-repetition-rate lasers. In this work, we report on proton acceleration to energies up to 6 MeV using a supersonic H2 gas-jet target at the LULI PICO2000 laser facility. The experimental results are compared with the plasma hydrodynamics and the particle-in-cell simulations to identify the acceleration mechanisms at play.

Abstract

International audience; For most applications of laser driven ion beams, a well-characterized high repetition rate intense ion beam with low divergence and a controllable energy spectrum is needed. High power laser-solid targets interactions are usually used, in which the main acceleration mechanism is the so-called Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA). Changing solid targets for overcritical gas jet targets has given interesting results in theoretical simulations and these later have several technical advantages for high repetition rate lasers. In this work protons and helium ions are accelerated from a near-critical supersonic gas jet. The production of such targets is very challenging for near infrared lasers. We present recent results concerning the design and characterization of supersonic gas nozzles able to deliver such high densities and the first results obtained during the first experiment on PICO2000 facility at LULI. We succeeded to accelerate ions up to several MeV with a H2 and He gas jet target. The number of accelerated ions is comparable to the one usually obtained with solid targets.

Abstract

International audience; Computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed to design gas nozzles, associated with a 1000 bars backing pressure system, capable of generating supersonic gas jet targets with densities close to the critical density for 1053 nm laser radiation (1021 cm−3). Such targets should be suitable for laser-driven ion acceleration at a high repetition rate. The simulation results are compared to the density profiles measured by interferometry, and characterization of the gas jet dynamics is performed using strioscopy. Proton beams with maximum energies up to 2 MeV have been produced from diatomic hydrogen gas jet targets in a first experiment.

Abstract

Nowadays, it is possible to accelerate bunches of particles in the interaction of ultrahigh intensity (UHI) laser pulses with matter. Electrons, protons, ions, and high-energy photon beams can be produced in experiments and reach kinetic energies close to hundreds of megaelectronvolts for protons and gigaelectronvolts for electrons and for the associated Bremsstrahlung photons. At these energies, these beams can induce a large variety of nuclear reactions, which can be detected and studied using $\gamma $ -ray spectroscopy techniques. At standard accelerator facilities, scintillator detectors are commonly used to perform prompt $\gamma $ -ray spectrometry studies. However, during laser–matter interactions, high fluxes of X-rays (mostly soft) are generated, which lead to instantaneous huge energy deposits (~1 $\mu \text{J}$ ) in these scintillators. Depending on the laser characteristics (energy and pulse duration), the detector recovery time after these X-ray flashes can reach several milliseconds, which makes any prompt or “in beam” measurement impossible. The origin of this long-duration signal is investigated in the case of a LaBr3 crystal coupled to different photodetectors. While it was impossible using standard photomultiplier tubes to detect $\gamma $ -ray emissions before a few milliseconds after a laser shot, we could, using a hybrid photodiode, resolve single $\gamma $ -ray emission a few tens of microseconds after the laser shot. Furthermore, we have also shown that the LaBr3 scintillator presents an unexpected long-lived light emission (afterglow). Directions are suggested for future studies in order to minimize the effects of this afterglow emission.

Abstract

SPIRAL2 (Systeme de Production d’Ions Radioactifs Acceleres en Ligne) is a research facility under construction at GANIL (Grand Accelerateur National d’Ions Lourds) for the production of radioactive ion beams by isotope separation on-line methods and low-energy in-flight techniques. REGLIS3 (Rare Element in Gas Laser Ion source and Spectroscopy) at S3 will be the new device which is also under construction at GANIL for producing RIBs (Radioactive Ion Beams) and for studying the ground state properties of the nuclei at low energy beam. The Ti: Sa laser cavities existing now at the GISELE (GANIL Ion Source using Electron Laser Excitation) setup are going to be developed in order to adapt them for the requirements of REGLIS3. A full description of REGLIS3 is presented, RILIS technique which was developed at the last century is also discussed, developing the Ti: Sa laser cavities is presented also that is essential for the usage of automatic scan of wavelength instead of the manual one.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we present the electron bunches extracted from a dense plasma produced by the interaction of a ns laser at an intensity of 1013 W cm−2 with a solid target, when this plasma expands in an electric field. The plasma expansion dynamics measured in the previous works [M. Comet et al., J. Appl. Phys. 119, 013301 (2016)] is used to determine the electron charge density profile at different instants after the laser shot. When applying the electric field, a few 1013 electrons are extracted with continuous energy distributions. Particle-In-Cell simulations are run to understand the extraction process and reproduce the measured energy distributions, with the electron charge density profiles used as inputs. These simulations show that the electron extraction proceeds from the plasma front edge throughout the plasma expansion

Abstract

International audience; Laser ion acceleration induced by high-power laser systems is nowadays an important research subject due to the large potential range of applications it could satisfy. Most of the available high-power laser facilities deliver only a few laser pulses per hour. The new facilities under development will operate at higher repetition rates (up to 10 Hz). Conventional target technologies (solid targets) and acceleration mechanisms (Target Normal Sheath Acceleration – TNSA) used so far in laser-based ion acceleration are difficult to implement at high repetition rate. New ion acceleration mechanisms such as Collisionless Shockwave Acceleration (CSA) using high density gas jets represent therefore a promising alternative. Dense gas jet targets show several advantages such as constant refresh and negligible debris production. However, full comprehension of the fluid dynamics involved in the gas jet target production is fundamental for its optimization, and at present precise data is scarce. An ongoing study of design and optimization of supersonic gas jet nozzles for laser-based ion acceleration is presented.
