Abstract

Abstract We report on new flavor tagging algorithms developed to determine the quark-flavor content of bottom ( ) mesons at Belle II. The algorithms provide essential inputs for measurements of quark-flavor mixing and charge-parity violation. We validate and evaluate the performance of the algorithms using hadronic decays with flavor-specific final states reconstructed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 62.8 fb $$^{-1}$$ - 1 , collected at the resonance with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We measure the total effective tagging efficiency to be $$\begin{aligned} \varepsilon _\mathrm{eff} = \big (30.0 \pm 1.2(\text {stat}) \pm 0.4(\text {syst})\big )\% \end{aligned}$$ ε eff = ( 30.0 ± 1.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) ) % for a category-based algorithm and $$\begin{aligned} \varepsilon _\mathrm{eff} = \big (28.8 \pm 1.2(\text {stat}) \pm 0.4(\text {syst})\big )\% \end{aligned}$$ ε eff = ( 28.8 ± 1.2 ( stat ) ± 0.4 ( syst ) ) % for a deep-learning-based algorithm.

Abstract

Abstract We present the novel implementation of a non-differentiable metric approximation and a corresponding loss-scheduling aimed at the search for new particles of unknown mass in high energy physics experiments. We call the loss-scheduling, based on the minimisation of a figure-of-merit related function typical of particle physics, a Punzi-loss function, and the neural network that utilises this loss function a Punzi-net. We show that the Punzi-net outperforms standard multivariate analysis techniques and generalises well to mass hypotheses for which it was not trained. This is achieved by training a single classifier that provides a coherent and optimal classification of all signal hypotheses over the whole search space. Our result constitutes a complementary approach to fully differentiable analyses in particle physics. We implemented this work using PyTorch and provide users full access to a public repository containing all the codes and a training example.

Abstract

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′ in the process e+e-→μ+μ-Z′ and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′ in e+e-→e±μZ′. We do not find any excess of events and set 90% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ-Lτ theory, into upper limits on the Z′ coupling constant at the level of 5×10-2-1 for MZ′≤6 GeV/c2.

Abstract

In this paper we report the implementation of a global vertex fitting algorithm within the Belle II analysis software environment, which was originally developed for BaBar (Hulsbergen, 2005). We explore the impact of global vertex fitting algorithms for flavour physics analyses with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB e + e − collider, such as in the reconstruction of final states with neutral particles, and in fits with geometrical constraints from SuperKEKB’s nano-beam interaction region. The algorithm is compared to the standard vertex fitting algorithm employed by the Belle experiment. We have developed the fitting framework to utilise the EIGEN library for linear algebra operations, reducing the computation time for vertex fitting operations by an order of magnitude over previous methods. This has a significant impact on physics analysis computing efficiency, where vertex fitting over large combinations of final state particles is one of the most CPU intensive operations at Belle II.

Abstract

We present the result of the search for the rare B meson decay of B+ -> l(+)nu e gamma with l = e, mu. For the search the full data set recorded by the Belle experiment of 711 fb(-1) integrated luminosity near the Upsilon(4S) resonance is used. Signal candidates are reconstructed for photon energies E-gamma larger than 1 GeV using a novel multivariate tagging algorithm. The novel algorithm fully reconstructs the second B meson produced in the collision using hadronic modes and was specifically trained to recognize the signal signature in combination with hadronic tag-side B meson decays. This approach greatly enhances the performance. Background processes that can mimic this signature, mainly charmless semileptonic decays and continuum processes, are suppressed using multivariate methods. The number of signal candidates is determined by analyzing the missing mass squared distribution as inferred from the signal side particles and the kinematic properties of the tag-side B meson. No significant excess over the background-only hypothesis is observed and upper limits on the partial branching fraction Delta B with E-gamma > 1 GeV individually for electron and muon final states as well as for the average branching fraction of both lepton final states are reported. We find a Bayesian upper limit of Delta B(B+ -> l(+)nu el) 0.24 GeV at 90% CL.

Abstract

The Full Event Interpretation is presented: a new exclusive tagging algorithm used by the high-energy physics experiment Belle II. The experimental setup of Belle II allows the precise measurement of otherwise inaccessible $B$ meson decay-modes. The Full Event Interpretation algorithm enables many of these measurements. The algorithm relies on machine learning to automatically identify plausible $B$ meson decay chains based on the data recorded by the detector. Compared to similar algorithms employed by previous experiments, the Full Event Interpretation provides a greater efficiency, yielding a larger effective sample size usable in the measurement., 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

It is part of the Belle~II Analysis Software Framework. This allows the validation of the analysis software and the improvement of analyses based on the recorded Belle dataset using newly developed analysis tools.

Abstract

International audience; Charged particle track reconstruction is a major component of data-processing in high-energy physics experiments such as those at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and is foreseen to become more and more challenging with higher collision rates. A simplified two-dimensional version of the track reconstruction problem is set up on a collaborative platform, RAMP, in order for the developers to prototype and test new ideas. A small-scale competition was held during the Connecting The Dots / Intelligent Trackers 2017 (CTDWIT 2017) workshop. Despite the short time scale, a number of different approaches have been developed and compared along a single score metric, which was kept generic enough to accommodate a summarized performance in terms of both efficiency and fake rates.
