We introduce multijunction active layers, featuring a stack of alternating active layers and tunnel junctions, to PCSELs to increase their slope efficiency, which is vital for various applications including laser processing and LiDAR. First, we design a multijunction PCSEL that avoids optical absorption in the heavily-doped tunnel junctions while allowing sufficient optical gain and resonance effects in the active and photonic crystal layers. Next, we fabricate a 3-mm-diameter two-junction PCSEL, achieving a slope efficiency of 1.58 W/A, which is over twice as high as that of conventional single-junction PCSELs, and a record-high peak output power of 1.8 kW for PCSELs., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Meteorites and their components exhibit a diverse range of oxygen isotope compositions, and the isotopic exchange timescale between dust grains and ambient gas is a key parameter for understanding the spatiotemporal evolution of the solar nebula. As dust grains existed as macroscopic aggregates in the solar nebula, it is necessary to consider the isotopic exchange timescales for these aggregates. Here, we theoretically estimate the isotope exchange timescales between dust aggregates and ambient vapor. The isotope exchange process between aggregates and ambient vapor is divided into four processes: (i) supply of gas molecules to the aggregate surface, (ii) diffusion of molecules within the aggregate, (iii) isotope exchange on the surface of constituent particles, and (iv) isotope diffusion within the particles. We evaluate these timescales and assess which one becomes the rate-determining step. We reveal that the isotope exchange timescale is approximately the same as that of the constituent particles when the aggregate radius is smaller than the critical value, which is a few centimeters when considering the exchange reaction between amorphous forsterite aggregates and water vapor., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) are clouds of the magnetized relativistic electron/positron plasma supplied from the central pulsar. However, the number of radio-emitting particles inside a PWN is larger than the expectation from the study of pulsar magnetospheres and then their origin is still unclear. A stochastic acceleration of externally injected particles by a turbulence inside the PWN is proposed by our previous studies. In this paper, the previous stochastic acceleration model of the PWN broadband spectra is improved by taking into account the time evolution of the turbulent energy and then the total energy balance inside a PWN is maintained. The turbulent energy supplied from the central pulsar is wasted by the backreaction from the stochastic particle acceleration and the adiabatic cooling according the PWN expansion. The model is applied to the Crab Nebula and reproduce the current broadband emission spectrum, especially the flat radio spectrum although time evolution of the turbulent energy (diffusion coefficient) is a bit complicated compared with our previous studies, where we assumed an exponential behavior of the diffusion coefficient., Comment: Accepted for publication in Prog. We investigate parametric decay instability (PDI) of circularly polarized Alfv\'en wave into daughter acoustic wave and backward Alfv\'en wave in magnetically-dominated plasma, in which the magnetization parameter $\sigma$ (energy density ratio of background magnetic field to matter) exceeds unity. We analyze relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), focusing on wave frequencies sufficiently lower than the plasma and cyclotron frequencies. We derive analytical formulae for the dispersion relation and growth rate of the instability as a function of the magnetization $\sigma$, wave amplitude $\eta$, and plasma temperature $\theta$. We find that PDI persists even in high magnetization $\sigma$, albeit with a decreased growth rate up to $\sigma\to\infty$. Our formulae are useful for estimating the decay of Alfv\'en wave into acoustic wave and heat in high magnetization $\sigma$ plasma, which is a ubiquitous phenomenon such as in pulsars, magnetars, and fast radio bursts., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in PRE

Lattice softness has a significant impact on charge carrier dynamics in condensed matter systems, contributing to the emergence of various properties and functions. Examples include the remarkable carrier lifetimes and defect tolerances of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. Recent studies suggest the contribution of quartic anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations. The quartic anharmonicity can be discussed with a double-well potential, and the transition between the two minima can be coarse-grained as a two-state jump stochastic process. Such a stochastic approach is typically employed to describe dynamic fluctuations introduced into a system by two-state transitions in the surroundings. To investigate charge transport in materials, however, it is crucial to describe not only the fluctuations but also the dynamic lattice distortion associated with charge transport. Therefore, there is a need for a theory to describe the charge carrier dynamics proceeding alongside the lattice distortion dynamics. In this study, we present a theory that describes quantum dynamics under the influence of an environment with two stable states, termed a bistable environment. The theory describes the effects of fluctuations and dissipation induced from the bistable environment in a reasonable manner, and the effects exhibit a different temperature dependence than the widely employed Gaussian environment. The physical implication of this temperature dependence is provided in terms of the environmental dynamics. The results of this study are expected to provide a step forward in describing charge carrier dynamics in materials with lattice softness and pronounced lattice anharmonicity, e.g., hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. Moreover, these findings represent an advancement in our understanding of and capacity to predict and control the physical properties and functions of these materials.

The enhancement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the vicinity of $p$-wave compound nuclear resonances was observed for a variety of medium-heavy nuclei. The enhanced parity-violating asymmetry can be understood using the $s$-$p$ mixing model. The $s$-$p$ mixing model predicts several neutron energy-dependent angular correlations between the neutron momentum $\vec k_n$, neutron spin $\vec\sigma_n$, $\gamma$-ray momentum $\vec k_\gamma$, and $\gamma$-ray polarization $\vec\sigma_\gamma$ in the $(n,\gamma)$ reaction. Producing a polarized lanthanum (La) target with high polarization and long relaxation time is crucial for realizing time-reversal violation experiments using polarized neutron beams. We use a LaAlO3 crystal doped with a small amount of Nd3+ ions for the polarized lanthanum target. Optimizing the amount of Nd3+ ions is considerably important because the achievable polarization and relaxation time strongly depend on this amount. We established a fundamental method to grow single crystals of Nd3+:LaAlO3 using an optical floating zone method that employs halogen lamps and evaluated the crystals with the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) method for polarizing nuclear spins. Two crystal samples were grown by ourselves and evaluated with the DNP at 1.3 K and 2.3 T for the first time except for the target materials of protons. The enhancement of NMR signals for 139La and 27Al was successfully observed, and the enhancement factors were eventually 3.5+-0.3 and 13+-3 for the samples with Nd3+ ions of 0.05 and 0.01 mol%, respectively. These enhancement factors correspond to absolute vector polarizations of 0.27+-0.02% (Nd 0.05 mol%) and 1.4+-0.3% (Nd 0.01 mol%). Although the obtained polarizations are still low, they are acceptable as a first step. Quantum systems are unavoidably open to their surrounding degrees of freedom. The theory of open quantum systems is thus crucial to understanding the fluctuations, dissipation, and decoherence of a quantum system of interest. Typically, the bath is modeled as an ensemble of harmonic oscillators, which yields Gaussian statistics of the bath influence on the quantum systems. However, there are also phenomena in which the bath consists of two-state systems, spins, or anharmonic oscillators; therefore, the non-Gaussian properties of the bath become important. Nevertheless, a theoretical framework to describe quantum systems under the influence of such non-Gaussian baths is not well established. Here, we develop a theory to describe quantum dissipative systems affected by Poisson noise properties of the bath, because the L\'evi-It\^o decomposition theorem asserts that Poisson noise is fundamental in describing arbitrary white noise beyond Gaussian properties. We introduce a quantum bath model that allows for the consistent description of dissipative quantum systems. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy is a powerful technique for studying the dynamic processes of molecular systems in condensed phases. However, in molecular systems containing many dye molecules, the spectra can become crowded and difficult to interpret owing to the presence of multiple nonlinear optical contributions. In this work, we theoretically propose time-resolved spectroscopy based on the coincidence counting of two entangled photons generated via parametric down-conversion with a monochromatic laser. We demonstrate that the use of two-photon counting detection of entangled photon pairs enables the selective elimination of the excited-state absorption signal. This selective elimination cannot be realized with classical coherent light. We anticipate that the proposed spectroscopy will help to simplify the spectral interpretation in complex molecular and materials systems comprising multiple molecules., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

In this paper, we study asset selection methods to construct a sparse index tracking portfolio. For its advantage over full replication portfolio, the concept of sparse index tracking portfolio has significant attention in the field of finance and investment management. We propose useful formulations to select assets for sparse index tracking portfolio. Our formulations are described as combinatorial optimization problems, and they can yield various asset selection methods, including some existing methods, by adjusting the values of parameters. As a result, the proposed formulations can provide a well-balanced asset selection to create successful sparse index tracking portfolios. We also provide numerical examples to compare the tracking performance of resulting sparse index tracking portfolios.

Detailed measurements of the spectral structure of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons from 10.6 GeV to 7.5 TeV are presented from over 7 years of observations with the CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station. Because of the excellent energy resolution (a few percent above 10 GeV) and the outstanding e/p separation (10$^5$), CALET provides optimal performance for a detailed search of structures in the energy spectrum. The analysis uses data up to the end of 2022, and the statistics of observed electron candidates has increased more than 3 times since the last publication in 2018. By adopting an updated boosted decision tree analysis, a sufficient proton rejection power up to 7.5 TeV is achieved, with a residual proton contamination less than 10%. The observed energy spectrum becomes gradually harder in the lower energy region from around 30 GeV, consistently with AMS-02, but from 300 to 600 GeV it is considerably softer than the spectra measured by DAMPE and Fermi-LAT. At high energies, the spectrum presents a sharp break around 1 TeV, with a spectral index change from -3.15 to -3.91, and a broken power law fitting the data in the energy range from 30 GeV to 4.8 TeV better than a single power law with 6.9 sigma significance, which is compatible with the DAMPE results. The break is consistent with the expected effects of radiation loss during the propagation from distant sources (except the highest energy bin). We have fitted the spectrum with a model consistent with the positron flux measured by AMS-02 below 1 TeV and interpreted the electron + positron spectrum with possible contributions from pulsars and nearby sources. Mass-angle distribution (MAD) measurement of heavy and superheavy element fragmentation reactions is one of the powerful tools for investigating the mechanism of fission and fusion process. MAD shows a strong correlation between mass and angle when the quasi-fission event is dominant. It has characteristic that appears diagonal correlation as long as the quasi-fission event is dominant. This diagonal correlation could not be reproduced in previous our model before the introduction of the parameters. In this study, we systematically evaluate the unknown model parameters contained in our model and clarify those model parameters to reproduce the diagonal correlation that appears in MAD. Using a dynamical model based on the fluctuation dissipation theorem that employs Langevin equations, we calculate MADs of two reaction systems $^{48}$Ti+$^{186}$W and $^{34}$S+$^{232}$Th which are dominated by quasi-fission. We were able to clarify the effects of unknown model parameters on the MAD. In addition, we identified the values of model parameters that can reproduce the correlation between mass and angle. The mass angle distribution shows a strong correlation between mass and angle when quasifission events are dominant. Therefore, as long as quasifission events are dominant, the mass angle distribution is characterized in that a diagonal correlation appears. This diagonal correlation could not be reproduced in our previous model that is before introducing $f_\text{ina}$ and $\gamma_\text{t}^{0}$ model parameters. In this study, we clarify the indeterminate parameters included in the model to reproduce the diagonal correlation appearing in the mass angle distribution in the $^{48}$Ti + $^{186}$W reaction system. Image denoising is a representative image restoration task in computer vision. Recent progress of image denoising from only noisy images has attracted much attention. Deep image prior (DIP) demonstrated successful image denoising from only a noisy image by inductive bias of convolutional neural network architectures without any pre-training. The major challenge of DIP based image denoising is that DIP would completely recover the original noisy image unless applying early stopping. For early stopping without a ground-truth clean image, we propose to monitor JPEG file size of the recovered image during optimization as a proxy metric of noise levels in the recovered image. Photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) are capable of single-mode, high-power lasing over a large resonator area owing to two-dimensional resonance at a singularity point of the photonic band structure. Since the number of photons in the lasing mode in PCSELs are much larger than those in conventional semiconductor lasers, PCSELs are in principle suitable for coherent operation with a narrow spectral linewidth. In this paper, we numerically and experimentally investigate intrinsic spectral linewidths of 1-mm-diameter PCSELs under continuous-wave (CW) operation, and we demonstrate CW operation with 1-kHz-class intrinsic linewidths and 5-W-class output power.

Dust particles in protoplanetary disks experience various chemical reactions under different physicochemical conditions through their accretion and diffusion, which results in the radial chemical gradient of dust. We performed three-dimensional Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the dust trajectories and the progress of fictitious irreversible reactions, of which kinetics is expressed by the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation. The distribution of the highest temperature that each particle experiences before the degree of reaction exceeds a certain level shows the log-normal distribution, and its mode temperature was used as the effective reaction temperature. Semi-analytical prediction formulas of the effective reaction temperature and its dispersion were derived by comparing a reaction timescale with a diffusive transport timescale of dust as a function of the reaction parameters and the disk parameters. The formulas reproduce the numerical results of the effective reaction temperatures and their dispersions within 5.5 and 24 %, respectively, in a wide temperature range (200-1400 K). We applied the formulas for the crystallization of amorphous silicate dust and its oxygen isotope exchange with the H2O vapor based on the experimentally determined kinetics. For sub-micron sized amorphous forsterite dust, the predicted effective reaction temperature for the oxygen isotope exchange was lower than that of crystallization without overlap even considering their dispersions. This suggests that the amorphous silicate dust in the protosolar disk could exchange their oxygen isotopes efficiently with the 16O-poor H2O vapor, resulting in the distinct oxygen isotope compositions from the Sun., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper, we present a generalized Japan Standard Time algorithm (JST-algo) for higher-order atomic clock ensembles and mathematically clarify the relations of the (generalized) JST-algo and the conventional Kalman filtering algorithm (CKF-algo) in the averaged atomic time and the clock residuals for time scale generation. In particular, we reveal the fact that the averaged atomic time of the generalized JST-algo does not depend on the observation noise even though the measurement signal is not filtered in the algorithm. Furthermore, the prediction error of CKF- algo is rigorously shown by using the prediction error regarding an observable state space. It is mathematically shown that when the covariance matrices of system noises are identical for all atomic clocks, considering equal averaging weights for the clocks is a necessary and sufficient condition to ensure equivalence between the generalized JST-algo and CKF-algo in averaged atomic time. In such homogeneous systems, a necessary and sufficient condition for observation noises is presented to determine which algorithm can generate the clock residuals with smaller variances. Soft sensors that can discriminate shear and normal force could help provide machines the fine control desirable for safe and effective physical interactions with people. A capacitive sensor is made for this purpose, composed of patterned elastomer and containing both fixed and sliding pillars that allow the sensor to deform and buckle, much like skin itself. The sensor differentiates between simultaneously applied pressure and shear. In addition, finger proximity is detectable up to 15 mm, with a pressure and shear sensitivity of 1 kPa and a displacement resolution of 50 $\mu$m. The operation is demonstrated on a simple gripper holding a cup. We present the observation of a charge-sign dependent solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) with the CALorimetric Electron Telescope onboard the International Space Station over 6 yr, corresponding to the positive polarity of the solar magnetic field. The observed variation of proton count rate is consistent with the neutron monitor count rate, validating our methods for determining the proton count rate. It is observed by the CALorimetric Electron Telescope that both GCR electron and proton count rates at the same average rigidity vary in anticorrelation with the tilt angle of the heliospheric current sheet, while the amplitude of the variation is significantly larger in the electron count rate than in the proton count rate. We show that this observed charge-sign dependence is reproduced by a numerical ``drift model'' of the GCR transport in the heliosphere. In this article, we present a structured Kalman filter associated with the transformation matrix for observable Kalman canonical decomposition from conventional Kalman filter (CKF) in order to generate a more accurate time scale. The conventional Kalman filter is a special case of the proposed structured Kalman filter which yields the same predicted unobservable or observable states when some conditions are satisfied. We consider an optimization problem respective to the transformation matrix where the objective function is associated with not only the expected value of prediction error but also its variance. We reveal that such an objective function is a convex function and show some conditions under which CKF is nothing but the optimal algorithm if ideal computation is possible without computation error. We present the results of a direct measurement of the cosmic-ray helium spectrum with the CALET instrument in operation on the International Space Station since 2015. The observation period covered by this analysis spans from October 13, 2015 to April 30, 2022 (2392 days). The very wide dynamic range of CALET allowed to collect helium data over a large energy interval, from ~40 GeV to ~250 TeV, for the first time with a single instrument in Low Earth Orbit. The measured spectrum shows evidence of a deviation of the flux from a single power-law by more than 8$\sigma$ with a progressive spectral hardening from a few hundred GeV to a few tens of TeV. This result is consistent with the data reported by space instruments including PAMELA, AMS-02, DAMPE and balloon instruments including CREAM. At higher energy we report the onset of a softening of the helium spectrum around 30 TeV (total kinetic energy). Though affected by large uncertainties in the highest energy bins, the observation of a flux reduction turns out to be consistent with the most recent results of DAMPE. A Double Broken Power Law (DBPL) is found to fit simultaneously both spectral features: the hardening (at lower energy) and the softening (at higher energy). A measurement of the proton to helium flux ratio in the energy range from 60 GeV/n to about 60 TeV/n is also presented, using the CALET proton flux recently updated with higher statistics.

We study the equilibrium-independent (EI) passivity of a nonlinear power system composed of two-axis generator models. The model of our interest consists of a feedback inter-connection of linear and nonlinear subsystems, called mechanical and electromagnetic subsystems. We mathematically prove the following three facts by analyzing the nonlinear electromagnetic subsystem. First, a lossless transmission network is necessary for the EI passivity of the electromagnetic subsystem. Second, the convexity of a strain energy function characterizes the largest set of equilibria over which the electromagnetic subsystem is EI passive. Finally, we prove that the strain energy function for the network of the two-axis generator models is convex if and only if its flux linkage dynamics is stable, and the strain energy function for the network of the classical generator models derived by singular perturbation approximation of the flux linkage dynamics is convex. Numerical simulation of the IEEE 9-bus power system model demonstrates the practical implications of the various mathematical results. In particular, we validate that the convex domain of the strain energy function over which the electromagnetic subsystem is EI passive is almost identical to the set of all stable equilibria. This result is also generalized to lossy power systems based on our finding that the convexity of the strain energy function is equivalent to the positive semidefiniteness of a synchronizing torque coefficient matrix.

In this paper, we perform a time-domain analysis of the higher-order Allan variance for atomic clock models of arbitrary order. Adopting a standard atomic clock model where the time series of the clock reading deviation is expressed as a Wiener or integrated Wiener process, we define the higher-order Allan variance as the mean squared higher-order difference of the clock reading deviation. The main results of this paper are threefold. First, we prove that the higher-order difference operation of the clock reading deviation, which can be interpreted as a linear aggregation with binomial coefficients, is not only sufficient but also necessary for a resulting aggregated time series to be an independent and identically distributed Gaussian process. Second, we derive a complete analytical expression of the higher-order Allan variance, which consists of both time-dependent and time-independent terms. Third, we prove that the higher-order Allan variance is time-independent if and only if the order of difference operation is greater than or equal to the order of the atomic clock model.
