Precise agriculture based on intelligent agriculture plays a significant role in sustainable development. The agricultural Internet of Things (IoTs) is a crucial foundation for intelligent agriculture. However, the development of agricultural IoTs has led to exponential growth in various sensors, posing a major challenge in achieving long‐term stable power supply for these distributed sensors. Introducing a self‐powered active biochemical sensor can help, but current sensors have poor sensitivity and specificity making this application challenging. To overcome this limitation, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)‐based self‐powered active urea sensor which demonstrates high sensitivity and specificity is developed. This device achieves signal enhancement by introducing a volume effect to enhance the utilization of charges through a novel dual‐electrode structure, and improves the specificity of urea detection by utilizing an enzyme‐catalyzed reaction. The device is successfully used to monitor the variation of urea concentration during crop growth with concentrations as low as 4 µm, without being significantly affected by common fertilizers such as potassium chloride or ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. This is the first self‐powered active biochemical sensor capable of highly specific and highly sensitive fertilizer detection, pointing toward a new direction for developing self‐powered active biochemical sensor systems within sustainable development‐oriented agricultural IoTs. With the rapid development of digital technologies such as intelligent control and information communication, digitization has gradually become an inevitable trend to promote technology innovation and industrial upgrading for the power grid. As the basis of digital technology, digital sensing technology will gradually penetrate all aspects of the power system for comprehensive perception and high operational reliability. First, this article introduces the application status and technical requirements of power intelligent sensor technology in various aspects of the power system, including the generation, transmission, transformation, distribution, and consumption of electricity. Next, domestic and foreign scholars' latest research achievements in power sensing technology are described from three major aspects, that is, optical fiber sensing technology, MEMS sensing technology, and sensor self‐powered technology. Finally, future challenges for the electric power intelligent sensors are discussed and an outlook of future widespread application in the clean, safe, and efficient digital power grid is provided. Interstory drift response is one of most important quantities to quickly assess performance and damages in buildings. Nevertheless, direct measurement of interstory drift is difficult and expensive, because a stationary reference is required to attach measurement devices. With the goal of accurate and fast reference-free estimation, this paper proposes a new strategy to determine dynamic interstory drifts using accelerations. In particular, a Tikhonov regularization is adopted in a generalized minimization problem to achieve an efficient and stable finite impulse response (FIR) filter. Furthermore, due to independent clocks in wireless sensors, accurate time synchronization of the records is critical; consequently, a strategy for accurate synchronization is also presented. Finally, the proposed strategy has been deployed on edge devices for onboard real-time interstory drift estimation. The proposed method for dynamic interstory drift estimation is validated, first, by numerical simulation using earthquake records as base excitation of linear and nonlinear buildings, as well as through laboratory shake table experiments. Both numerical and lab test results show good agreement of dynamic interstory drifts between the measured value and estimated results, demonstrating the efficacy of the proposed method to estimate the dynamic displacements of seismically excited structures. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors are pivotal in upholding environmental integrity and human health, necessitating heightened sensitivity and exceptional selectivity. Despite the prevalent use of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) for NO2 detection, extant solutions exhibit shortcomings in meeting practical application criteria, specifically in response, selectivity, and operational temperatures. Here, we successfully employed a facile microwave-solvothermal method to synthesize a mesoporous CeO2/CNCs nanocomposite. This methodology entails the rapid and comprehensive dispersion of CeO2 nanoparticles onto helical carbon nanocoils (CNCs), resulting in augmented electronic conductivity and an abundance of active sites within the composite. Consequently, the gas-sensing sensitivity of the nanocomposite at room temperature experienced a notable enhancement. Moreover, the presence of cerium oxide and the conversion of Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies in the composites, thereby further amplifying the sensing performance. Experimental outcomes demonstrate that the nanocomposite exhibited an approximate 9-fold increase in response to 50 ppm NO2 in comparison to pure CNCs at room temperature. Additionally, the CeO2/CNCs sensor displayed remarkable selectivity towards NO2 when exposed to gases such as NH3, CO, SO2, CO2, and C2H5OH. The segmentation of abnormal regions is vital in smart manufacturing. The blurring sauce-packet leakage segmentation task (BSLST) is designed to distinguish the sauce packet and the leakage's foreground and background at the pixel level. However, the existing segmentation system for detecting sauce-packet leakage on intelligent sensors encounters an issue of imaging blurring caused by uneven illumination. This issue adversely affects segmentation performance, thereby hindering the measurements of leakage area and impeding the automated sauce-packet production. To alleviate this issue, we propose the two-stage illumination-aware sauce-packet leakage segmentation (ISLS) method for intelligent sensors. The ISLS comprises two main stages: illumination-aware region enhancement and leakage region segmentation. In the first stage, YOLO-Fastestv2 is employed to capture the Region of Interest (ROI), which reduces redundancy computations. Additionally, we propose image enhancement to relieve the impact of uneven illumination, enhancing the texture details of the ROI. In the second stage, we propose a novel feature extraction network. Specifically, we propose the multi-scale feature fusion module (MFFM) and the Sequential Self-Attention Mechanism (SSAM) to capture discriminative representations of leakage. The multi-level features are fused by the MFFM with a small number of parameters, which capture leakage semantics at different scales. The SSAM realizes the enhancement of valid features and the suppression of invalid features by the adaptive weighting of spatial and channel dimensions. Furthermore, we generate a self-built dataset of sauce packets, including 606 images with various leakage areas. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that our ISLS method shows better results than several state-of-the-art methods, with additional performance analyses deployed on intelligent sensors to affirm the effectiveness of our proposed method. This paper explores the development of a smart Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) platform tailored for long-span bridge monitoring, using the Forth Road Bridge (FRB) as a case study. It discusses the selection of smart sensors available for real-time monitoring, the formulation of an effective data strategy encompassing the collection, processing, management, analysis, and visualization of monitoring data sets to support decision-making, and the establishment of a cost-effective and intelligent sensor network aligned with the objectives set through comprehensive communication with asset owners. Due to the high data rates and dense sensor installations, conventional processing techniques are inadequate for fulfilling monitoring functionalities and ensuring security. Cloud-computing emerges as a widely adopted solution for processing and storing vast monitoring data sets. Drawing from the authors' experience in implementing long-span bridge monitoring systems in the UK and China, this paper compares the advantages and limitations of employing cloud- computing for long-span bridge monitoring. Furthermore, it explores strategies for developing a robust data strategy and leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twin (DT) technologies to extract relevant information or patterns regarding asset health conditions. This information is then visualized through the interaction between physical and virtual worlds, facilitating timely and informed decision-making in managing critical road transport infrastructure. Traditional battery management systems (BMS) encounter significant challenges, including low precision in predicting battery states and complexities in managing batteries, primarily due to the scarcity of collected signals. The advancement towards a "smart battery", equipped with diverse sensor types, promises to mitigate these issues. This review highlights the latest developments in smart sensing technologies for batteries, encompassing electrical, thermal, mechanical, acoustic, and gas sensors. Specifically, we address how these different signals are perceived and how these varied signals could enhance our comprehension of battery aging, failure, and thermal runaway mechanisms, contributing to the creation of BMS that are safer and more reliable. Moreover, we analyze the limitations and challenges faced by different sensor applications and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each sensing technology. Packaging solutions have recently evolved to become smart and intelligent thanks to technologies such as RFID tracking and communication systems, but the integration of sensing functionality in these systems is still under active development. In this paper, chipless RFID humidity sensors suitable for smart packaging are proposed together with a novel strategy to tune their performances and their operating range. The sensors are flexible, fast, low-cost and easy to fabricate and can be read wirelessly. The sensitivity and the humidity range where they can be used are adjustable by changing one of the sensor's structural parameters. Moreover, these sensors are proposed as double parameter sensors, using both the frequency shift and the intensity variation of the resonance peak for the measure of the relative humidity. The results show that the sensitivity can vary remarkably among the sensors proposed, together with the operative range. The sensor suitability in two specific smart packaging applications is discussed. In the first case, a threshold sensor in the low-humidity range for package integrity verification is analyzed, and in the second case, a more complex measurement of humidity in non-hermetic packages is investigated. Automotive radar is one of the key sensors for intelligent driving. Radar image sequences contain abundant spatial and temporal information, enabling target classification. For existing radar spatiotemporal classifiers, multi-view radar images are usually employed to enhance the information of the target and 3D convolution is employed for spatiotemporal feature extraction. These models consume significant hardware resources and are not applicable to real-time applications. In this paper, RadarTCN, a novel lightweight network, is proposed that achieves high-accuracy online target classification using single-view radar image sequences only. In RadarTCN, 2D convolution and 3D-TCN are employed to extract spatiotemporal features sequentially. To reduce data dimensionality and computational complexity, a multi-layer max pooling down-sampling method is designed in a 2D convolution module. Meanwhile, the 3D-TCN module is improved through residual pruning and causal convolution is introduced for leveraging the performance of online target classification. The experimental results demonstrate that RadarTCN can achieve high-precision online target recognition for both range-angle and range-Doppler map sequences. Intelligent compaction (IC) has emerged as a breakthrough technology that utilizes advanced sensing, data transmission, and control systems to optimize asphalt pavement compaction quality and efficiency. However, accurate assessment of compaction status remains challenging under real construction conditions. This paper reviewed recent progress and applications of smart sensors and machine learning (ML) to address existing limitations in IC. The principles and components of various advanced sensors deployed in IC systems were introduced, including SmartRock, fiber Bragg grating, and integrated circuit piezoelectric acceleration sensors. Case studies on utilizing these sensors for particle behavior monitoring, strain measurement, and impact data collection were reviewed. Meanwhile, common ML algorithms including regression, classification, clustering, and artificial neural networks were discussed. Practical examples of applying ML to estimate mechanical properties, evaluate overall compaction quality, and predict soil firmness through supervised and unsupervised models were examined. Results indicated smart sensors have enhanced compaction monitoring capabilities but require robustness improvements. ML provides a data-driven approach to complement traditional empirical methods but necessitates extensive field validation. Potential integration with digital construction technologies such as building information modeling and augmented reality was also explored. In conclusion, leveraging emerging sensing and artificial intelligence presents opportunities to optimize the IC process and address key challenges. However, cooperation across disciplines will be vital to test and refine technologies under real-world conditions. This paper introduces a novel approach to measure deformations in geomaterials using the recently developed 'Smart Pebble' sensors. Smart Pebbles were included in triaxial test specimens of unbound aggregates stabilized with geogrids. The sensors are equipped with an aggregate particle/position tracking algorithm that can manage uncertainty arising due to signal noise and random walk effects. Two Smart Pebbles were placed in each test specimen, one at specimen's mid-height, where a geogrid was installed in the mechanically stabilized specimen, and one towards the top of the specimen. Even with simple raw data processing, the trends on linear vertical acceleration indicated the ability of Smart Pebbles to assess the geomaterial configuration and applied stress states. Employing a Kalman filter-based algorithm, the Smart Pebble position coordinates were tracked during testing. The specimen's resilient deformations were simultaneously recorded. bender element shear wave transducer pairs were also installed on the specimens to further validate the Smart Pebble small-strain responses. The results indicate a close agreement between the BE sensors and Smart Pebbles estimates towards local stiffness enhancement quantification in the geogrid specimen. The need for speeding up data analytics increases inevitably due to the need for extracting valuable information from social media, data generated by smart devices with sensors, patterns of people's communications over the web, items viewed and bought by global-scale customers, cloud applications, etc., all of which take part in the "Big Data." Such kind of interaction data is very well represented as sparse graphs to enable the graph analytics, which requires efficient underlying kernels. The breadth-first search (BFS)-based traversal is a commonly used kernel in graph algorithms such as the betweenness centrality algorithm for centrality analysis. In this work, we focus on parallel BFS operations and propose hypergraph-based combinatorial models that aim at reducing cache misses and hence exploiting data locality during the parallel BFS operations. Our models are based on finding new vertex visit orders so that locality in accessing the data associated with vertices is exploited. Experiments on graphs arising in a wide range of applications show that our proposed models achieve on average 9% performance improvement in the CPU-based Ligra data analytics framework. This paper presents a suitably general model for resistive displacement sensors where the model parameters depend on the current sensor conditions, thereby capturing wearout and failure, and proposes a novel fault detection method that can be seamlessly applied during sensor operation, providing self-diagnostic capabilities. On the basis of the estimation of model parameters, an innovative self-compensation method is derived to increase the accuracy of sensors subject to progressive wearout. The proposed model and methods have been validated by both numerical simulations and experimental tests on two real resistive displacement sensors, placed in undamaged and faulty conditions, respectively. The fault detection method has shown an accuracy of 97.2%. The position estimation error is < ±0.2% of the full-scale span for the undamaged sensor, while the self-compensation method successfully reduces the position estimation error from ±15% to approximately ±2% of the full-scale span for the faulty sensor. This paper describes the use of wireless smart sensors for examining the underlying mechanism for the wind-induced vibration of high-mast illumination pole (HMIP) structures. HMIPs are tall, slender structures with low inherent damping. Video recordings of multiple HMIPs showed considerable vibrations of these HMIPs under wind loading in the state of Kansas. The HMIPs experienced cyclic large-amplitude displacements at the top, which can produce high-stress demand and lead to fatigue cracking at the bottom of the pole. In this study, the natural frequencies of the HMIP were assessed using pluck tests and finite element modeling, and the recorded vibration frequencies were obtained through computer vision-based video analysis. Meanwhile, a 30.48 m tall HMIP with three LED luminaires made of galvanized steel located in Wakeeney, Kansas, was selected for long-term vibration monitoring using wireless smart sensors to investigate the underlying mechanism for the excessive wind-induced vibrations. Data analysis with the long-term monitoring data indicates that while vortex-induced vibration occurs frequently at relatively low amplitude, buffeting-induced vibration was the leading cause of the excessive vibrations of the monitored HMIP. Rotary machines commonly use rolling element bearings to support rotation of the shafts. Most machine performance imperfections are related to bearing defects. Thus, reliable bearing condition monitoring systems are critically needed in industries to provide early warning of bearing fault so as to prevent machine performance degradation and reduce maintenance costs. The objective of this paper is to develop a smart monitoring system for real-time bearing fault detection and diagnostics. Firstly, a smart sensor-based data acquisition (DAQ) system is developed for wireless vibration signal collection. Secondly, a modified variational mode decomposition (MVMD) technique is proposed for nonstationary signal analysis and bearing fault detection. The proposed MVMD technique has several processing steps: (1) the signal is decomposed into a series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs); (2) a correlation kurtosis method is suggested to choose the most representative IMFs and construct the analytical signal; (3) envelope spectrum analysis is performed to identify the representative features and to predict bearing fault. Through the use of Underwater Smart Sensor Networks (USSNs), Marine Observatories (MOs) provide continuous ocean monitoring. Deployed sensors may not perform as intended due to the heterogeneity of USSN devices' hardware and software when combined with the Internet. Hence, USSNs are regarded as complex distributed systems. As such, USSN designers will encounter challenges throughout the design phase related to time, complexity, sharing diverse domain experiences (viewpoints), and ensuring optimal performance for the deployed USSNs. Accordingly, during the USSN development and deployment phases, a few Underwater Environmental Constraints (UECs) should be taken into account. These constraints may include the salinity level and the operational depth of every physical component (sensor, server, etc.) that will be utilized throughout the duration of the USSN information systems' development and implementation. To this end, in this article we present how we integrated an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Database, an extended ArchiMO meta-model, and a design tool into our previously proposed Enterprise Architecture Framework. This addition proposes adding new Underwater Environmental Constraints (UECs) to the AI Database, which is accessed by USSN designers when they define models, with the goal of simplifying the USSN design activity. This serves as the basis for generating a new version of our ArchiMO design tool that includes the UECs. To illustrate our proposal, we use the newly generated ArchiMO to create a model in the MO domain. Furthermore, we use our self-developed domain-specific model compiler to produce the relevant simulation code. Throughout the design phase, our approach contributes to the handling and controling of the uncertainties and variances of the provided quality of service that may occur during the performance of the USSNs, as well as reducing the design activity's complexity and time. Relative localization (RL) and circumnavigation is a highly challenging problem that is crucial for the safe flight of multi-UAVs (multiple unmanned aerial vehicles). Most methods depend on some external infrastructure for positioning. However, in some complex environments such as forests, it is difficult to set up such infrastructures. In this paper, an approach to infrastructure-free RL estimations of multi-UAVs is investigated for circumnavigating a slowly drifting UGV0 (unmanned ground vehicle 0), where UGV0 serves as the RL and circumnavigation target. Firstly, a discrete-time direct RL estimator is proposed to ascertain the coordinates of each UAV relative to the UGV0 based on intelligent sensing. Secondly, an RL fusion estimation method is proposed to obtain the final estimate of UGV0. Thirdly, an integrated estimation control scheme is also proposed for the application of the RL fusion estimation method to circumnavigation. The convergence and the performance are analyzed. In recent years, the development of intelligent sensor systems has experienced remarkable growth, particularly in the domain of microwave and millimeter wave sensing, thanks to the increased availability of affordable hardware components. With the development of smart Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar (GBSAR) system called GBSAR-Pi, we previously explored object classification applications based on raw radar data. Building upon this foundation, in this study, we analyze the potential of utilizing polarization information to improve the performance of deep learning models based on raw GBSAR data. The data are obtained with a GBSAR operating at 24 GHz with both vertical (VV) and horizontal (HH) polarization, resulting in two matrices (VV and HH) per observed scene. We present several approaches demonstrating the integration of such data into classification models based on a modified ResNet18 architecture. We also introduce a novel Siamese architecture tailored to accommodate the dual input radar data. The results indicate that a simple concatenation method is the most promising approach and underscore the importance of considering antenna polarization and merging strategies in deep learning applications based on radar data. In recent years, attention to the realization of a distributed fiber-optic microphone for the detection and recognition of the human voice has increased, whereby the most popular schemes are based on φ-OTDR. Many issues related to the selection of optimal system parameters and the recognition of registered signals, however, are still unresolved. In this research, we conducted theoretical studies of these issues based on the φ-OTDR mathematical model and verified them with experiments. We designed an algorithm for fiber sensor signal processing, applied a testing kit, and designed a method for the quantitative evaluation of our obtained results. We also proposed a new setup model for lab tests of φ-OTDR single coordinate sensors, which allows for the quick variation of their parameters. As a result, it was possible to define requirements for the best quality of speech recognition; estimation using the percentage of recognized words yielded a value of 96.3%, and estimation with Levenshtein distance provided a value of 15. In recent years, soft robotic sensors have rapidly advanced to endow robots with the ability to interact with the external environment. Here, we propose a polymer optical fiber (POF) sensor with sensitive and stable detection performance for strain, bending, twisting, and pressing. Thus, we can map the real-time output light intensity of POF sensors to the spatial morphology of the elastomer. By leveraging the intrinsic correlations of neighboring sensors and machine learning algorithms, we realize the spatially resolved detection of the pressing and multi-dimensional deformation of elastomers. Specifically, the developed intelligent sensing system can effectively recognize the two-dimensional indentation position with a prediction accuracy as large as ~99.17%. The average prediction accuracy of combined strain and twist is ~98.4% using the random forest algorithm. In addition, we demonstrate an integrated intelligent glove for the recognition of hand gestures with a high recognition accuracy of 99.38%. Our work holds promise for applications in soft robots for interactive tasks in complex environments, providing robots with multidimensional proprioceptive perception. The technology landscape has been dynamically reshaped by the rapid growth of the Internet of Things, introducing an era where everyday objects, equipped with smart sensors and connectivity, seamlessly interact to create intelligent ecosystems. IoT devices are highly heterogeneous in terms of software and hardware, and many of them are severely constrained. This heterogeneity and potentially constrained nature creates new challenges in terms of security, privacy, and data management. This work proposes a Monitoring-as-a-Service platform for both monitoring and management purposes, offering a comprehensive solution for collecting, storing, and processing monitoring data from heterogeneous IoT networks for the support of diverse IoT-based applications. To ensure a flexible and scalable solution, we leverage the FIWARE open-source framework, also incorporating blockchain and smart contract technologies to establish a robust integrity verification mechanism for aggregated monitoring and management data. Additionally, we apply automated workflows to filter and label the collected data systematically. Smart buildings use advanced technologies to automate building functions. One important function is occupancy detection using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for smart buildings. Occupancy information is useful information to reduce energy consumption by automating building functions such as lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. The information is useful to improve indoor air quality by ensuring that ventilation systems are used only when and where they are needed. Additionally, it is useful to enhance building security by detecting unusual or unexpected occupancy levels and triggering appropriate responses, such as alarms or alerts. Occupancy information is useful for many other applications, such as emergency response, plug load energy management, point-of-interest identification, etc. However, the accuracy of occupancy detection is limited by factors such as real-time occupancy data, sensor placement, privacy concerns, and the presence of pets or objects that can interfere with sensor reading. With the rapid development of IoT sensor technologies and the increasing need for smart building solutions, there is a growing interest in occupancy detection techniques. There is a need to provide a comprehensive survey of these technologies. Although there are some exciting survey papers, they all have limited scopes with different focuses. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art occupancy detection methods (including both traditional algorithms and machine learning algorithms) and devices with their advantages and limitations. It surveys and compares fundamental technologies (such as sensors, algorithms, etc.) for smart buildings. The reliability and scalability of Linear Wireless Sensor Networks (LWSNs) are limited by the high packet loss probabilities (PLP) experienced by the packets generated at nodes far from the sink node. This is an important limitation in Smart City applications, where timely data collection is critical for decision making. Unfortunately, previous works have not addressed this problem and have only focused on improving the network's overall performance. In this work, we propose a Distance-Based Queuing (DBQ) scheme that can be incorporated into MAC protocols for LWSNs to improve reliability and scalability without requiring extra local processing or additional signaling at the nodes. The DBQ scheme prioritizes the transmission of relay packets based on their hop distance to the sink node, ensuring that all packets experience the same PLP. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposal, we developed an analytical model and conducted extensive discrete-event simulations. Our numerical results demonstrate that the DBQ scheme significantly improves the reliability and scalability of the network by achieving the same average PLP and throughput for all nodes, regardless of traffic intensities and network sizes. Rockfalls can often pose a significant risk to the public if protective designs do not properly account for block movement downslope and onto infrastructure facilities. Assessing these hazards is challenging, especially as current empirical and computational methods for predicting trajectories of falling blocks generally do not include the contribution associated with rotational behavior. Research undertaken at the University of New Hampshire, USA, over the last decade has led to the development of Smart Rock (SR) sensors inserted in natural rocks to evaluate these events from the perspective of the falling rock. The latest SRs consist of 3 D printed capsules 58.0 mm in length and 25.4 mm in diameter, equipped with a ±400 g and a ±16 g 3-axis accelerometer, a ± 4000 dps high-rate gyroscope, and an altimeter. Approximately 80 field experiments conducted in New Hampshire and Vermont provided SR data on rockfall at ten different sites. The Smart Rock data allowed more in-depth evaluations of accelerations, rotation rates, and modes of motion with precise time intervals, which cannot be easily captured in video recording systems or other instrumentation techniques. These devices, driven by advancements in nanotechnology and materials science, offer highly sensitive and customizable sensors. The growing body of research in this area indicates a rising curiosity in their design and applications, with potential uses ranging from vital sign monitoring to biomarker detection. Sensing tattoos present a promising avenue in wearable healthcare technology, attracting attention from researchers, clinicians, and technology enthusiasts. The objective of this study is to analyze the development, application, and integration of the sensing tattoos in the health domain. A review was conducted on PubMed and Scopus, applying a standard checklist and a qualification process. The outcome reported 37 studies. Sensing tattoos hold transformative potential in health monitoring and physiological sensing, driven by their focus on affordability, user-friendly design, and versatile sensorization solutions. Despite their promise, ongoing refinement is essential, addressing limitations in adhesion, signal quality, biocompatibility, and regulatory complexities. Identified opportunities, including non-invasive health monitoring, multiplexed detection, and cost-effective fabrication methods, open avenues for personalized healthcare applications. However, bridging gaps in medical device standards, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance is imperative for seamless integration. A key theme calls for a holistic, user-centric approach, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration. Balancing innovation with practicality, prioritizing ethics, and fostering collaboration are crucial for the evolution of these technologies. The development of all‐in‐one devices for artificial visual systems offers an attractive solution in terms of energy efficiency and real‐time processing speed. In recent years, the proliferation of smart sensors in the growth of Internet‐of‐Things (IoT) has led to the increasing importance of in‐sensor computing technology, which places computational power at the edge of the data‐flow architecture. In this study, a prototype visual sensor inspired by the human retina is proposed, which integrates ferroelectricity and photosensitivity in two‐dimensional (2D) α‐In2Se3 material. This device mimics the functions of photoreceptors and amacrine cells in the retina, performing optical reception and memory computation functions through the use of electrical switching polarization in the channel. The gate‐tunable linearity of excitatory and inhibitory functions in photon‐induced short‐term plasticity enables to encode and classify 12 000 images in the Mixed National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset with remarkable accuracy, achieving ≈94%. Additionally, in‐sensor convolution image processing through a network of phototransistors, with five convolutional kernels electrically pre‐programmed into the transistors is demonstrated. The convoluted photocurrent matrices undergo straightforward arithmetic calculations to produce edge and feature‐enhanced scenarios. The findings demonstrate the potential of ferroelectric α‐In2Se3 for highly compact and efficient retinomorphic hardware implementation, regardless of ambipolar transport in the channel. The detection of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) holds significant importance in a range of applications, including elderly care and health monitoring. Our research focuses on the relevance of ADL detection in elderly care, highlighting the importance of accurate and unobtrusive monitoring. In this paper, we present a novel approach that that leverages smartphone data as the primary source for detecting ADLs. Additionally, we investigate the possibilities offered by ambient sensors installed in smart home environments to complement the smartphone data and optimize the ADL detection. Our approach uses a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. One of the key contributions of our work is defining ADL detection as a multilabeling problem, allowing us to detect different activities that occur simultaneously. This is particularly valuable since in real-world scenarios, individuals can perform multiple activities concurrently, such as cooking while watching TV. We also made use of unlabeled data to further enhance the accuracy of our model. Performance is evaluated on a real-world collected dataset, strengthening reliability of our findings. We also made the dataset openly available for further research and analysis. Results show that utilizing smartphone data alone already yields satisfactory results, above 50% true positive rate and balanced accuracy for all activities, providing a convenient and non-intrusive method for ADL detection. However, by incorporating ambient sensors, as an additional data source, one can improve the balanced accuracy of the ADL detection by 7% and 8% of balanced accuracy and true positive rate respectively, on average. Biological species can walk, swim, fly, jump, and climb with fast response speeds and motion complexity. These remarkable functions are accomplished by means of soft actuation organisms, which are commonly composed of muscle tissue systems. To achieve the creation of their biomimetic artificial counterparts, various biomimetic stimuli-responsive materials have been synthesized and developed in recent decades. They can respond to various external stimuli in the form of structural or morphological transformations by actively or passively converting input energy into mechanical energy. They are the core element of soft actuators for typical smart devices like soft robots, artificial muscles, intelligent sensors and nanogenerators. Significant progress has been made in the development of bioinspired stimuli-responsive materials. However, these materials have not been comprehensively summarized with specific actuation mechanisms in the literature. In this review, we will discuss recent advances in biomimetic stimuli-responsive materials that are instrumental for soft actuators. Firstly, different stimuli-responsive principles for soft actuators are discussed, including fluidic, electrical, thermal, magnetic, light, and chemical stimuli. We further summarize the state-of-the-art stimuli-responsive materials for soft actuators and explore the advantages and disadvantages of using electroactive polymers, magnetic soft composites, photo-thermal responsive polymers, shape memory alloys and other responsive soft materials. Finally, we provide a critical outlook on the field of stimuli-responsive soft actuators and emphasize the challenges in the process of their implementation to various industries. Aims. Traditional long-term ECG monitoring systems have primarily been used by cardiologist. New remote and wearable easy-to-use devices have led to increased use of ECG recordings also outside cardiology clinics. The aims of this study were to assess the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of interpretation of the one-lead ECG recordings from a patch ECG device (ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor system) by general practitioners (GP). Methods. Norwegian GPs were invited to digitally assess 10 long-term ECG recordings with different arrhythmias performed by the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor system. For all ECG examinations, the presence/absence of different arrhythmias was registered. Results. A total of 40 GPs accepted the invitation and assessed all the 10 long-term ECG recordings. All the tests were assessed as interpretable by all the GPs. Arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation/flutter, supraventricular tachycardia, and ventricular tachycardia) were correctly identified in most cases, with sensitivity of 98% (95% CI 95-99%), specificity of 75% (95% CI 68-82%), and diagnostic accuracy of 89% (85-92%). Incorrect automatic system algorithm interpretations were rarely corrected by the GPs. Conclusion. GPs interpreted one-lead recordings by the ECG247 Smart Heart Sensor system with high diagnostic accuracy for common arrhythmias. However, in cases with rare arrhythmias, we recommend consulting a cardiologist to confirm the diagnosis before treatment is initiated. This trial is registered with NCT04700865. Activities of daily living (ADLs) are fundamental routine tasks that the majority of physically and mentally healthy people can independently execute. In this paper, we present a semantic framework for detecting problems in ADLs execution, monitored through smart home sensors. In the context of this work, we conducted a pilot study, gathering raw data from various sensors and devices installed in a smart home environment. The proposed framework combines multiple Semantic Web technologies (i.e., ontology, RDF, triplestore) to handle and transform these raw data into meaningful representations, forming a knowledge graph. Subsequently, SPARQL queries are used to define and construct explicit rules to detect problematic behaviors in ADL execution, a procedure that leads to generating new implicit knowledge. Finally, all available results are visualized in a clinician dashboard. The proposed framework can monitor the deterioration of ADLs performance for people across the dementia spectrum by offering a comprehensive way for clinicians to describe problematic behaviors in the everyday life of an individual. Decision-making is a basic component of agents' (e.g., intelligent sensors) behaviors, in which one's cognition plays a crucial role in the process and outcome. Extensive games, a class of interactive decision-making scenarios, have been studied in diverse fields. Recently, a model of extensive games was proposed in which agent cognition of the structure of the underlying game and the quality of the game situations are encoded by artificial neural networks. This model refines the classic model of extensive games, and the corresponding equilibrium concept—cognitive perfect equilibrium (CPE)—differs from the classic subgame perfect equilibrium, since CPE takes agent cognition into consideration. However, this model neglects the consideration that game-playing processes are greatly affected by agents' cognition of their opponents. To this end, in this work, we go one step further by proposing a framework in which agents' cognition of their opponents is incorporated. A method is presented for evaluating opponents' cognition about the game being played, and thus, an algorithm designed for playing such games is analyzed. The resulting equilibrium concept is defined as adversarial cognition equilibrium (ACE). By means of a running example, we demonstrate that the ACE is more realistic than the CPE, since it involves learning about opponents' cognition. Further results are presented regarding the computational complexity, soundness, and completeness of the game-solving algorithm and the existence of the equilibrium solution. In recent years, portable and wearable personal electronic devices have rapidly developed with increasing mass production and rising energy consumption, creating an energy crisis. Using batteries and supercapacitors with limited lifespans and environmental hazards drives the need to find new, environmentally friendly, and renewable sources. One idea is to harness the energy of human motion and convert it into electrical energy using energy harvesting devices—piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs), triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and hybrids. They are characterized by a wide variety of features, such as lightness, flexibility, low cost, richness of materials, and many more. These devices offer the opportunity to use new technologies such as IoT, AI or HMI and create smart self-powered sensors, actuators, and self-powered implantable/wearable devices. This review focuses on recent examples of PENGs, TENGs and hybrid devices for wearable and implantable self-powered systems. The basic mechanisms of operation, micro/nano-scale material selection and manufacturing processes of selected examples are discussed. Among various applications of digital twins, measuring particulate matter in the context of air pollution has become increasingly important due to growing interest in atmospheric environments. By obtaining particle count values from analogue‐to‐digital converter raw data through photodiode and calibrating them, particulate matter values can be acquired. The singular‐value–decomposition is efficient transfer function learning method. However, due to the linear nature of the transfer function of singular‐value–decomposition, it also conveys noise information, necessitating post‐processing to suppress noise. This study proposes a method that utilizes long short‐term memory neural networks to effectively stabilize noise based on the output of continuous dust sensor particulate matter distributions. Using the singular value decomposition based particulate matter shows relative root‐mean‐square error (4.4761, 100%) as a reference, the proposed long short‐term memory post‐processing demonstrates an improved result (2.9328, 65.52%) compared to other post‐processing method: the mean filter (3.6704, 82.00%), low‐pass filter (3.7719, 84.27%) and Kalman filter (3.5550, 79.42%). Furthermore, to address the limitation of initial delay in long short‐term memory to achieve stable data output, a method of iteratively training the initial input data sample is proposed. For the initial input data, the non‐initialization approach exhibited a relative error of 87.57% and it took around 5 samples to predict stable output. In contrast, the proposed iterative training method, applied five times to the initial data sample, achieved a relative error of 9.51% and immediately obtained stable data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analog-to-feature (A2F) conversion based on non-uniform wavelet sampling (NUWS) has demonstrated the ability to reduce energy consumption in wireless sensors while employed for electrocardiogram (ECG) anomaly detection. The technique involves extracting only relevant features for a given task directly from analog signals and conducting classification in the digital domain. Building on this approach, we extended the application of the proposed generic A2F converter to address a human activity recognition (HAR) task. The performed simulations include the training and evaluation of neural network (NN) classifiers built for each application. The corresponding results enabled the definition of valuable features and the hardware specifications for the ongoing complete circuit design. One of the principal elements constituting the developed converter, the integrator brought from the state-of-the-art design, was modified and simulated at the circuit level to meet our requirements. The revised value of its power consumption served to estimate the energy spent by the communication chain with the A2F converter. It consumes at least 20 and 5 times less than the chain employing the Nyquist approach in arrhythmia detection and HAR tasks, respectively. Deep learning technology can improve sensing efficiency and has the ability to discover potential patterns in data; the efficiency of user behavior recognition in the field of smart homes has been further improved, making the recognition process more intelligent and humanized. This paper analyzes the optical sensors commonly used in smart homes and their working principles through case studies and explores the technical framework of user behavior recognition based on optical sensors. At the same time, CiteSpace (Basic version 6.2.R6) software is used to visualize and analyze the related literature, elaborate the main research hotspots and evolutionary changes of optical sensor-based smart home user behavior recognition, and summarize the future research trends. Finally, fully utilizing the advantages of cloud computing technology, such as scalability and on-demand services, combining typical life situations and the requirements of smart home users, a smart home data collection and processing technology framework based on elderly fall monitoring scenarios is designed. Based on the comprehensive research results, the application and positive impact of optical sensors in smart home user behavior recognition were analyzed, and inspiration was provided for future smart home user experience research. According to current regulations, welding is strictly prohibited for prestressed and tension cables. In response, this article proposes the use of a portable spot-welding machine to spot weld steel strands. This method generates a small current during spot welding, with a voltage of only 3 V to 5 V, and does not damage the internal structure of the steel strand. To effectively monitor cable tension in cable-supported structures, a novel approach utilizing a chip-based, encapsulated spot-welded strain sensor was investigated. The strain sensing capability, temperature sensitivity, stress relaxation, and static load responses were investigated on the proposed smart steel strand cables with spot-welded strain sensors. The theoretical analyses and finite element simulations revealed that the strain transfer efficiency of the spot-welded strain sensor exceeded 96%. The experimental results demonstrated that the load-strain relationship of the smart steel strand cable had a fitting degree greater than 0.999, and the tension errors obtained under different loads were within 1.26%. The tension full capacity errors measured at different temperatures were generally within 1.0%. The relaxation rate of the smart steel strand cable after 120 h was 3.78% and reduced the sensor accuracy error by 3.97%. This study introduces an all-digital CMOS time-domain smart temperature sensor (STS) that offers a smaller circuit area and reduced complexity. In contrast to previous studies that utilized multiple delay lines or additional path selection circuits, the proposed new structure employs a single cyclic path and fewer delay lines. The functionality of high-resolution temperature sensing, pulse-shrinking time measurement, and built-in offset-error cancellation is achieved using only one cyclic delay line (CDL). The temperature-sensing delay line generates a thermal-dependent pulse width proportional to the absolute temperature (PTAT). Subsequently, a pulse-shrinking unit, implemented within the pulse-shrinking delay line, performs time-to-digital conversion by measuring the PTAT pulse width. Finally, a time-added delay line within the CDL incorporates a simple D-type Flip Flop to enable concise offset-error cancellation, thereby improving accuracy. This study further simplifies the cancellation circuitry to reduce the overall circuit area. The proposed sensor, fabricated using a TSMC 0.35 μ m CMOS process, occupies an area of 0.022 mm 2 , providing a cost-effective solution for pulse-shrinking STSs. The maximum inaccuracy after offset-error cancellation is 1. 3 ∘ C within a temperature range of 0 ∼ 80 ∘ C, with a high resolution of approximately 0. 035 ∘ C/LSB. This resolution enhancement significantly surpasses similar studies. By reducing circuit complexity, the proposed sensor successfully achieves improvements in both area and resolution. This paper describes the technical framework underlying the e-VITA virtual coaching system platform and presents preliminary feedback on its use. At its core is the e-VITA Manager, a pivotal component responsible for harmonizing the seamless integration of various specialized devices and modules. These modules include the Dialogue Manager, Data Fusion, and Emotional Detection, each making distinct contributions to enhance the platform's functionalities. The platform's design incorporates a multitude of devices and software components from Europe and Japan, each built upon diverse technologies and standards. Despite increasing interest in developing ultrasensitive widefield diamond magnetometry for various applications, achieving high temporal resolution and sensitivity simultaneously remains a key challenge. This is largely due to the transfer and processing of massive amounts of data from the frame‐based sensor to capture the widefield fluorescence intensity of spin defects in diamonds. In this study, a neuromorphic vision sensor to encode the changes of fluorescence intensity into spikes in the optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) measurements is adopted, closely resembling the operation of the human vision system, which leads to highly compressed data volume and reduced latency. It also results in a vast dynamic range, high temporal resolution, and exceptional signal‐to‐background ratio. After a thorough theoretical evaluation, the experiment with an off‐the‐shelf event camera demonstrated a 13× improvement in temporal resolution with comparable precision of detecting ODMR resonance frequencies compared with the state‐of‐the‐art highly specialized frame‐based approach. It is successfully deploy this technology in monitoring dynamically modulated laser heating of gold nanoparticles coated on a diamond surface, a recognizably difficult task using existing approaches. The current development provides new insights for high‐precision and low‐latency widefield quantum sensing, with possibilities for integration with emerging memory devices to realize more intelligent quantum sensors. Over the past decade, there has been a significant surge in interest in flexible mechanical force sensing devices and systems. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to the development of flexible mechanical force sensors for daily healthcare and medical diagnosis, driven by the increasing demand for wearable/portable devices in long-term healthcare and precision medicine. In this review, we summarize recent advances in diverse categories of flexible mechanical force sensors, covering piezoresistive, capacitive, piezoelectric, triboelectric, magnetoelastic, and other force sensors. This review focuses on their working principles, design strategies and applications in healthcare and diagnosis, with an emphasis on the interplay among the sensor architecture, performance, and application scenario. Finally, we provide perspectives on the remaining challenges and opportunities in this field, with particular discussions on problem-driven force sensor designs, as well as developments of novel sensor architectures and intelligent mechanical force sensing systems. Janus membranes with asymmetric wettability have been considered cutting‐edge for energy/environmental‐sustainable applications like water/fog harvester, breathable skin, and smart sensor; however, technical challenges in fabrication and accurate regulation of asymmetric wettability limit their development. Herein, by using water‐assisted hydrogen‐bonded (H‐bonded) assembly of small molecules at water/oil interface, a facile strategy is proposed for one‐step fabrication of membranes with well‐regulable asymmetric wettability. Asymmetric orderly patterns, beneficial for mass transport based on abundant high‐permeability sites and large surface area, are constructed on opposite membrane surfaces. Upon tuning water‐assisted H‐bonding via H‐sites/configuration design and temperature/pH modulation, double‐hydrophobic, double‐hydrophilic, and hydrophobic‐hydrophilic membranes are facilely fabricated. The Janus membranes show smart vapor‐responsive curling and unidirectional water transport with promising flux of 1158±25 L m−2 h−1 under natural gravity and 31500±670 L·(m−2 h−1 bar−1) at negative pressure. This bottom‐up approach offers a feasible‐to‐scalable avenue to precise‐manipulation of Janus membranes for advanced applications, providing an effective pathway for developing tailor‐made self‐assembled nanomaterials. The growing demand for soft intelligent systems, which have the potential to be used in a variety of fields such as wearable technology and human‐robot interaction systems, has spurred the development of advanced soft transducers. Among soft systems, sensor–actuator hybrid systems are considered the most promising due to their effective and efficient performance, resulting from the synergistic and complementary interaction between their sensor and actuator components. Recent research on integrated sensor and actuator systems has resulted in a range of conceptual and practical soft systems. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of recent advances in sensor and actuator integrated systems, which are grouped into three categories based on their primary functions: i) actuator–assisted sensors for intelligent detection, ii) sensor‐assisted actuators for intelligent movement, and iii) sensor‐actuator interactive devices for a hybrid of intelligent detection and movement. In addition, several bottlenecks in current studies are discussed, and prospective outlooks, including potential applications, are presented. Generally, these days people live longer but often with increased impairment and disabilities; therefore, they can benefit from assistive technologies. In this paper, we focus on the completion of activities of daily living (ADLs) by such patients, using so-called Smart Homes and Sensor Technology to collect data, and provide a suitable analysis to support the management of these conditions. The activities here are cast as states of a Markov-type process, while changes of state are indicated by sensor activations. This facilitates the extraction of key performance indicators (KPIs) in Smart Homes, e.g., the duration of an important activity, as well as the identification of anomalies in such transitions and durations. The use of semi-Markov models for such a scenario is described, where the state durations are represented by mixed gamma models. This approach is illustrated and evaluated using a publicly available Smart Home dataset comprising an event log of sensor activations, together with an annotated record of the actual activities. The integration of 3D printed sensors into hosting structures has become a growing area of research due to simplified assembly procedures, reduced system complexity, and lower fabrication cost. Embedding 3D printed sensors into structures or bonding the sensors on surfaces are the two techniques for the integration of sensors. This review extensively discusses the fabrication of sensors through different additive manufacturing techniques. Various additive manufacturing techniques dedicated to manufacture sensors as well as their integration techniques during the manufacturing process will be discussed. This review will also discuss the basic sensing mechanisms of integrated sensors and their applications. In the realm of intelligent sensor systems, the dependence on Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications has heightened the importance of interpretability. This is particularly critical for opaque models such as Deep Neural Networks (DNN), as understanding their decisions is essential, not only for ethical and regulatory compliance, but also for fostering trust in AI-driven outcomes. This paper introduces the novel concept of a Computer Vision Interpretability Index (CVII). The CVII framework is designed to emulate human cognitive processes, specifically in tasks related to vision. It addresses the intricate challenge of quantifying interpretability, a task that is inherently subjective and varies across domains. The CVII is rigorously evaluated using a range of computer vision models applied to the COCO (Common Objects in Context) dataset, a widely recognized benchmark in the field. The findings established a robust correlation between image interpretability, model selection, and CVII scores. This research makes a substantial contribution to enhancing interpretability for human comprehension, as well as within intelligent sensor applications. In this paper, an event-driven wireless sensor node is proposed and demonstrated. The primary design objective is to devise a wireless sensor node with miniaturization, integration, and high-accuracy recognition ability. The proposed wireless sensor node integrates two vibration-threshold-triggered energy harvesters that sense and power a threshold voltage control circuit for power management, a microcontroller unit (MCU) for system control, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) environment data analysis and vibration events distribution, and a radio frequency (RF) digital baseband transmitter with IEEE 802.15.4-/.6 protocols. The dimensions of the wireless sensor node are 4 × 2 × 1 cm3. Finally, the proposed wireless sensor node was fabricated and tested. The alarming time for detecting the vibration event is less than 6 s. The measured recognition accuracy of three events (knock, shake, and heat) is over 97.5%. Immune therapy for cancer patients is a new and promising area that in the future may complement traditional chemotherapy. The cell expansion phase is a critical part of the process chain to produce a large number of high-quality, genetically modified immune cells from an initial sample from the patient. Smart sensors augment the ability of the control and monitoring system of the process to react in real-time to key control parameter variations, adapt to different patient profiles, and optimize the process. The aim of the current work is to develop and calibrate smart sensors for their deployment in a real bioreactor platform, with adaptive control and monitoring for diverse patient/donor cell profiles. A set of contrasting smart sensors has been implemented and tested on automated cell expansion batch runs, which incorporate advanced data-driven machine learning and statistical techniques to detect variations and disturbances of the key system features. Furthermore, a 'consensus' approach is applied to the six smart sensor alerts as a confidence factor which helps the human operator identify significant events that require attention. Initial results show that the smart sensors can effectively model and track the data generated by the Aglaris FACER bioreactor, anticipate events within a 30 min time window, and mitigate perturbations in order to optimize the key performance indicators of cell quantity and quality. In quantitative terms for event detection, the consensus for sensors across batch runs demonstrated good stability: the AI-based smart sensors (Fuzzy and Weighted Aggregation) gave 88% and 86% consensus, respectively, whereas the statistically based (Stability Detector and Bollinger) gave 25% and 42% consensus, respectively, the average consensus for all six being 65%. The different results reflect the different theoretical approaches. Finally, the consensus of batch runs across sensors gave even higher stability, ranging from 57% to 98% with an average consensus of 80%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
