Measurements with a HF Doppler sounder at Kodaikanal (10.2°N, 77.5°E, geomagnetic latitude 0.8°N) showed conspicuous quasi-periodic fluctuations (period 25-35 min) in F region vertical plasma drift, Vz in the interval 0047-0210 IST on the night of 23/24 December, 1991 (Ap = 14, Kp < 4-). The fluctuations in F region vertical drift are found to be coherent with variations in Bz (north-south) component of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), in geomagnetic H/X components at high-mid latitude locations both in the sunlit and dark hemispheres and near the dayside dip equator, suggestive of DP2 origin. But the polarity of the electric field fluctuations at the midnight dip equator (eastward) is the same as the dayside equator inferred from magnetic variations, contrary to what is expected of equatorial DP2. The origin of the coherent occurrence of equatorial electric field fluctuations in the DP2 range of the same sign in the day and night hemispheres is unclear and merits further investigations.Key words: Ionosphere (electric fields and currents; equatorial ionosphere; ionosphere-magnetosphere interactions)

Introduction: Aspiration pneumonia, a leading cause of mortality, poses an urgent challenge in contemporary society. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been commonly used in dysphagia rehabilitation. However, given that NMES at motor threshold targets only specific muscles, it carries a potential risk of further compromising functions related to swallowing, respiration, and airway protection. Considering that the swallow motor pattern is orchestrated by the entire swallow pattern generator (the neural mechanism governing a sequence of swallow actions), a rehabilitation approach that centrally facilitates the entire circuit through sensory nerve stimulation is desirable. In this context, we propose a novel stimulation method using surface electrodes placed on the back to promote swallowing., Methods: The efficacy of the proposed method in promoting swallowing was evaluated by electrically stimulating sensory nerves in the back or neck. Probabilistic stimulus was applied to either the back or neck of male and female rats. Swallows were evoked by an oral water stimulus, and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the mylohyoid, thyroarytenoid, and thyropharyngeus muscles served as the primary outcome measure., Results: Gaussian frequency stimulation applied to the skin surface of the thoracic back elicited significant increases in EMG amplitude of all three swallow-related muscles. Neck stimulation elicited a significant increase in EMG amplitude of the thyroarytenoid during swallow, but not the mylohyoid or thyropharyngeus muscles., Discussion: While the targeted thoracic spinal segments T9-T10 have been investigated for enhancing respiration, the promotion of swallowing through back stimulation has not been previously studied. Furthermore, this study introduces a new probabilistic stimulus based on Gaussian distribution. Probabilistic stimuli have been reported to excel in nerve stimulation in previous research. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been associated with high mortality worldwide. Owing to its complicated pathophysiology, diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for effective patient management remain scarce. We analyzed kynurenine, tryptophan, and serotonin levels in the serum of patients with COVID-19 via liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis. Serum serotonin levels were decreased in patients with more severe COVID-19, along with increased kynurenine and decreased tryptophan concentrations. Patients with moderate disease who subsequently worsened showed significantly lower serotonin concentrations compared with those who did not experience severe disease. The prognosis of patients with severe cases of COVID-19 is poor; thus, biomarkers for earlier prediction of COVID-19 progression are vital. We measured levels of five lung injury-related biomarkers, SP-D, KL-6, presepsin, kallistatin and stratifin, in serum samples collected serially during hospitalization from 31 patients with mild/moderate or severe/critical COVID-19 pneumonia, and their predictive performances were compared. Like the previously reported presepsin, a new biomarker candidate, stratifin, was significantly elevated with the onset of severe or critical symptoms in COVID-19 patients and decreased with symptom improvement. Notably, changes in stratifin and presepsin levels were distinctly earlier than those in SP-D, KL-6 and even SpO 2 /FiO 2 values. Furthermore, serum levels of these biomarkers were significantly higher at the pre-severe stage (before the start of oxygen support) of patients who eventually advanced to severe/critical stages than in the patients who remained at the mild/moderate stage. These results were confirmed in an independent cohort, including 71 mild/moderate and 14 severe/critical patients, for whom the performance of stratifin and presepsin in discriminating between mild/moderate and pre-severe conditions of COVID-19 patients was superior to that of the SpO 2 /FiO 2 ratio. Since the discovery 25 years ago, many investigations have reported light-induced macroscopic mass migration of azobenzene-containing polymer films. Various mechanisms have been proposed to account for these motions. This study explores light-inert side chain liquid crystalline polymer (SCLCP) films with a photoresponsive polymer only at the free surface and reports the key effects of the topmost surface to generate surface relief gratings (SRGs) for SCLCP films. The top-coating with an azobenzene-containing SCLCP is achieved by the Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) method or surface segregation. A negligible amount of the photoresponsive skin layer can induce large SRGs upon patterned UV light irradiation. Conversely, the motion of the SRG-forming azobenzene SCLCP is impeded by the existence of a LS monolayer of the octadecyl side chain polymer on the top. These results are well understood by considering the Marangoni flow driven by the surface tension instability. This approach should pave the way toward in-situ inscription of the surface topography for light-inert materials and eliminate the strong light absorption of azobenzene, which is a drawback in optical device applications.

Elastin-like polypeptides (ELPs) are promising candidates for fabricating tissue-engineering scaffolds that mimic the extracellular environment of elastic tissues. We have developed a "double-hydrophobic" block ELP, GPG , inspired by non-uniform distribution of two different hydrophobic domains in natural elastin. GPG has a block sequence of (VGGVG) 5 -(VPGXG) 25 -(VGGVG) 5 that self-assembles to form nanofibers in water. Functional derivatives of GPG with appended amino acid motifs can also form nanofibers, a display of the block sequence's robust self-assembling properties. However, how the block length affects fiber formation has never been clarified. This study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a novel ELP, GPPG , in which the central sequence (VPGVG) 25 is repeated twice by a short linker sequence. The self-assembly behavior and the resultant nanostructures of GPG and GPPG were when compared through circular dichroism spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Dynamic rheology measurements revealed that the nanofiber dispersions of both GPG and GPPG at an extremely low concentration (0.034 wt%) exhibited solid-like behavior with storage modulus G' > loss modulus G" over wide range of angular frequencies, which was most probably due to the high aspect ratio of the nanofibers that leads to the flocculation of nanofibers in the dispersion.

Slight contaminations existing in a material lead to substantial defects in applied paint. Herein, we propose a strategy to convert this nuisance to a technologically useful process by using an azobenzene-containing side chain liquid crystalline (SCLCP) polymer. This method allows for a developer-free phototriggered surface fabrication. The mass migration is initiated by UV-light irradiation and directed by super-inkjet printed patterns using another polymer on the SCLCP film surface. UV irradiation results in a liquid crystal-to-isotropic phase transition, and this phase change immediately initiates a mass migration to form crater or trench structures due to the surface tension instability known as Marangoni flow. The transferred volume of the film reaches approximately 440-fold that of the polymer ink, and therefore, the printed ink pattern acts as a latent image towards the amplification of surface morphing. This printing-aided photoprocess for surface inscription is expected to provide a new platform of polymer microfabrication.

Objective: This study aimed to assess the relationship between weight gain from early adulthood and visceral fat accumulation., Methods: The participants were 549 men aged 42 to 64 years who were randomly selected from the local resident registry for the National Institute for Longevity Sciences' neighbourhood. They were asked to recall their weight at 18 years of age, and then, post-18 weight-change values were calculated for each participant (their current weight minus their weight at 18). The participants were divided according to their median body mass index (BMI) at 18 years of age (initial BMI) (<20.14 and ≥20.14 kg m -2 ). Visceral fat area (VFA) and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) were measured on computed tomography scans., Results: The participants with initial BMI of <20.14 kg m -2 exhibited greater post-18 weight changes than those with initial BMI of ≥20.14 kg m -2 . The participants' post-18 weight-change values were negatively correlated with their initial BMI and positively correlated with both VFA and SFA. The slope of the regression line for the relationship between post-18 weight change and VFA was steeper in the participants with initial BMI of <20.14 kg m -2 ( β  = 4.36) than in those with initial BMI of ≥20.14 kg m -2 ( β  = 3.23)., Conclusions: Visceral fat accumulation is affected not only by an individual's post-18 weight gain but also by their initial BMI. Men who were thin in early adulthood experienced greater weight gain-associated VFA increases, but the same was not true for SFA.

Animal wings are lightweight and flexible; hence, during flapping flight their shapes change. It has been known that such dynamic wing morphing reduces aerodynamic cost in insects, but the consequences in vertebrate flyers, particularly birds, are not well understood. We have developed a method to reconstruct a three-dimensional wing model of a bird from the wing outline and the feather shafts (rachides). The morphological and kinematic parameters can be obtained using the wing model, and the numerical or mechanical simulations may also be carried out. To test the effectiveness of the method, we recorded the hovering flight of a hummingbird ( Amazilia amazilia ) using high-speed cameras and reconstructed the right wing. The wing shape varied substantially within a stroke cycle. Specifically, the maximum and minimum wing areas differed by 18%, presumably due to feather sliding; the wing was bent near the wrist joint, towards the upward direction and opposite to the stroke direction; positive upward camber and the 'washout' twist (monotonic decrease in the angle of incidence from the proximal to distal wing) were observed during both half-strokes; the spanwise distribution of the twist was uniform during downstroke, but an abrupt increase near the wrist joint was found during upstroke., Competing Interests: We have no competing interests.

Background: Whether smokers and former smokers have worse lipid profiles or glucose levels than non-smokers remains unclear., Methods: The subjects were 1152 Japanese males aged 42 to 81 years. The subjects were divided according to their smoking habits (nonsmokers, former smokers, and current smokers) and their visceral fat area (VFA) (<100 cm(2) and ≥100 cm(2))., Results: The serum triglyceride (TG) levels of 835 males were assessed. In the VFA ≥100 cm(2) group, a significantly greater proportion of current smokers (47.3%) exhibited TG levels of ≥150 mg/dL compared with former smokers (36.4%) and non-smokers (18.8%). The difference in TG level distribution between former smokers and non-smokers was also significant. However, among the subjects with VFA of <100 cm(2), the TG levels of the three smoking habit groups did not differ. The serum hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels of 877 males were also assessed. In the VFA <100 cm(2) group, significantly higher proportions of current smokers (17.9%) and former smokers (14.9%) demonstrated HbA1c levels of ≥5.6% compared with non-smokers (6.3%). In contrast, in the VFA ≥100 cm(2) group, significantly fewer former smokers displayed HbA1c levels of ≥5.6% compared with non-smokers and current smokers. Furthermore, the interaction between smoking habits and VFA was associated with the subjects' TG and HbA1c concentrations, and the associations of TG and HbA1c concentrations and smoking habits varied according to VFA., Conclusions: Both smoking habits and VFA exhibited associations with TG and HbA1c concentrations. The associations between smoking habits and these parameters differed according to VFA.

A 58-year-old Japanese man with a high parasitemia of Plasmodium falciparum, returning from Uganda, was admitted to our hospital since his consciousness level rapidly deteriorated after the initial dose of mefloquine. Despite the parasitemia was cleared by quinine by day 7, the coma remained unchanged and diffuse leukoencephalopathy was detected on magnetic resonance image. Steroid pulse therapy was initiated on day 8. Subsequently, the neurological manifestations improved and he was discharged on day 73 without any sequelae. Pathogenesis of P. falciparum causing cerebral malaria is diverse and complex. If neurological symptoms unusually prolong, steroid may be an effective treatment option.

We assessed longitudinal relationships between baseline testosterone and muscle mass changes in Japanese men. Data were collected from community-dwelling 957 adult men who participated in a longitudinal study of ageing biennially from 1997-2010. Appendicular muscle mass (AMM) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and follow-up examinations. The cut-off point of sarcopenia was defined as a skeletal muscle index (AMM/height(2)) < 6.87 kg/m(2). Total testosterone (TT) and free testosterone (FT) were measured with a radioimmunoassay. The calculated FT (cFT) was determined with a formula using albumin, TT, and sex hormone-binding globulin levels. We analyzed 4,187 or 2,010 cumulative data points using generalized estimating equations. Low TT was not associated with sarcopenia. Low cFT (odds ratio = 2.14, 95% confidence interval: 1.06-4.33) and FT (odds ratio = 1.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.04-3.22) were associated with sarcopenia. Low FT may be a predictor of risk for muscle loss in Japanese men.

To determine how to eliminate species difference in animal bone experiment, bone mineral content (BMC) was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) on the femurs of laboratory mice (Mus musculus) and rats (Rattus norvegicus), and common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Measures were taken on femurs in situ, detached from the body, skinned and defleshed, or dried completely. When the BMC of the bone measured in the intact limb attached to the trunk was set at 100%, the actual BMC of the dry bone was 58.7 +/- 11.5% in mice and 103.2 +/- 3.2% in rats. Similarly, the bone area (Area) and bone mineral density (BMD) of the dried femur was significantly lower in the mouse femurs than intact limb. Thus, soft limb tissue such as skin and muscle modified the BMC, Area, and BMD only in mouse but not in those from rats or marmosets. The bone mineral ratio (BMR; BMC divided by dry bone weight) was nearest to the human bone value in the rat femurs, whereas the mouse femur BMR was the most different. The BMR was proved to be a practical index in evaluating bone characteristics in laboratory animals, but the mouse femur might not be suitable as an animal model for research into the aging of human bone.

Objective: To examine the effects of single and long-term administration of wheat albumin (WA) on blood glucose levels and blood glucose control, respectively., Design: Randomly arranged crossover trial for single administration in healthy subjects and double-blinded randomized controlled trial for long-term administration (3 months) in diabetic patients. In vitro alpha-amylase inhibitory activity of WA was also determined., Setting: Central Research Laboratories of Nisshin Flour Milling Co. Ltd. (Saitama, Japan) for single administration and Aiwa Clinic (Saitama, Japan) for long-term administration., Subjects: A total of 12 healthy adult male volunteers for the single administration and 24 type II outpatient diabetics with mild hyperglycemia for the long-term administration., Interventions: Subjects took soups containing 0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 g WA before test meals for single administration, and patients took soups with or without 0.5 g WA before every meal for the long-term (3 months) administration., Results: In vitro alpha-amylase inhibitory activity of WA was 150 times that of wheat flour. In the single administration experiment, WA suppressed peak postprandial blood glucose levels in a dose-dependent manner: 31, 47, and 50% reduction after 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 g administrations, respectively. In the long-term administration, 0.5 g of WA did not affect fasting blood glucose levels, whereas it reduced hemoglobin A1c levels. No significant adverse effects such as hypoglycemia or gastrointestinal disturbances were observed in the two experiments., Conclusion: In the treatment of type II diabetic patients, WA might be a useful functional food, which, with diet and exercise, could help to improve blood glucose control without any critical adverse effects.

1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU), one of the chloroethyl nitrosoureas, is effective against malignant glioma. To develop its use in intrathecal chemotherapy, we encapsulated BCNU in hybrid liposomes composed of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine and micellar surfactants (Tween 20) and dissolved it in artificial cerebrospinal fluid (lipo-BCNU). We then studied the toxicity of hybrid liposomes and cellular proliferation inhibition of lipo-BCNU in vitro. We found that 3 mM hybrid liposomes did not affect the viability of human endothelial cells and that lipo-BCNU inhibited the proliferation of human glioma cell lines U-105MG, U-251MG, and U-373MG, and rat glioma cell lines C6 and 9L in a concentration-dependent fashion. Wistar rats that were administered lipo-BCNU intracisternally showed no weight loss, neurological symptoms, or histological changes of the brain and spinal cord. A Wistar rat model of meningeal gliomatosis was established by intracisternal inoculation of 0.1 ml cell suspension containing 1 x 10(6) or 5 x 10(6) viable C6 glioma cells. Two days after inoculation, lipo-BCNU (BCNU, 2.5 mg/kg) was administered intracisternally. When 1 x 10(6) glioma cells were inoculated (experiments 1 and 2), the median survival times were 24.5 and 26 days in the control groups and 32 and 45 days in the lipo-BCNU-treated groups. respectively. When 5 x 10(6) glioma cells were inoculated (experiments 3-6), the median survival times were 17-29.5 days in the control groups and 23-44 days in the treated groups, respectively. Significantly prolonged survival was obtained in three of six experimental groups. After the administration of 1 ml lipo-BCNU (BCNU, 4.67 mM) or 1 ml BCNU solubilized with 5% dextrose/water (BCNU, 4.67 mM) into the cisterna magna of dogs, the cisterna magna cerebrospinal fluid was sampled, and the BCNU concentrations were assayed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The half-life of the lipo-BCNU was longer than that of BCNU solubilized with 5% dextrose/water. These results suggest that the intrathecal administration of lipo-BCNU may be possible for the treatment of meningeal gliomatosis.

A novel method for high-efficiency and region- controlled in vivo gene transfer was developed by combining in vivo electroporation and intraarterial plasmid DNA injection. A mammalian expression plasmid for the Escherichia coli lacZ gene (driven with a SV40 early promoter) was injected into the internal carotid artery of rats whose brain tumors (from prior inoculation) had been electroporated between two electrodes. The lacZ gene was efficiently transferred and expressed in the tumor cell 3 days after plasmid injection. However, neither any gene transfers nor any elevated lacZ activity was detected in tissues outside the electrodes. The plasmid was not transferred without electroporation. Human monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 cDNA was also transferred by this method, and its long-lasting (3 weeks) expression was confirmed by using the Epstein-Barr virus episomal replicon system. The expressed monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 protein was functional, as evident by the presence of a large number of monocytes in tumor tissue. This method, electrogene therapy, which does not require viral genes or particles, allows genes to be transferred and expressed in desired organs or tissues, and it may lead to the development of a new type of highly effective gene therapy.

Lymphocyte activation by streptolysin O (SLO) and factors in the plasma which inhibit the response to SLO were examined in 19 patients with mucocutaneous lymphnode syndrome (MCLS), 54 age-matched (6 months-6 years) normal children, 41 normal children older than 6 years and 10 normal adults. In normal children younger than 6 years, the response to SLO was weak and in many cases no response was seen. On the other hand, in the patients with MCLS, the response of lymphocytes to SLO was high and comparable to the response in adults and children older than 6 years. The DNA synthesis of lymphocytes stimulated by SLO was inhibited almost completely by autologous or allogeneic plasma of many of the normal children and adults. The plasma of patients with MCLS did not inhibit, but rather enhanced the response to SLO. These results suggest that the increased response of lymphocytes to SLO and the lack of plasma inhibitory factors in patients with MCLS may be due to the immune response to the pathogen of MCLS, as yet undiscovered.

Antibody activity, especially that involved in the reaction of antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC), of five commercially available human gammaglobulin preparations (standard, pepsin-treated, plasmin-treated, polyethylene glycol-fractionated and S-sulfonated gammaglobulin) was measured. All these gammaglobulin preparations had high titers of hemagglutination inhibition and neutralizing antibody against measles virus. In ADCC reaction, the pepsin-treated gammaglobulin preparation showed no antibody activity. The standard gammaglobulin preparation showed weak activity only when highly diluted. The remaining three preparations showed high activity. Though the S-sulfonated gammaglobulin preparation showed no activity in ADCC reaction, it showed high activity after reconversion by means of oxidation and reduction in vitro. The plasmin-treated gammaglobulin preparation showed greater activity than the polyethylene glycol-fractionated preparation of the optimal concentration. In ADCC tests using the plasmin-treated gammaglobulin preparation, K cell activity was strongly inhibited by Hg (thimerosal), while, in those using the standard gammaglobulin preparation, the activity was hardly influenced by Hg, suggesting that the low ADCC activity of the standard gammaglobulin preparation of high concentrations was due to the inhibitory effect of aggregated immunoglobulin G molecules.
