One of the most important and topical challenges of quantum circuits is their scalability. Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) technology is at the forefront of replacing current standard CMOS-based control architectures for a number of applications, including quantum computing and quantum sensor arrays. By condensing the control and readout to SFQ-based on-chip devices that are directly connected to the quantum systems, it is possible to minimise the total system overhead, improving scalability and integration. In this work, we present a novel RSFQ device that generates multi tone digital signals, based on complex pulse train sequences using a Circular Shift Register (CSR) and a comb filter stage. We show that the frequency spectrum of the pulse trains is dependent on a preloaded pattern on the CSR, as well as on the delay line of the comb filter stage. By carefully selecting both the pattern and delay, the desired tones can be isolated and amplified as required. The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), a type of variational quantum algorithm, is a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm to find the lowest-energy eigenstate of a particular Hamiltonian. We investigate ways to optimize the VQE solving process on multiple instances of the same problem, by observing the process on one instance of the problem to inform initialization for other processes. We aim to take advantage of the VQE solution process to obtain useful information while disregarding information which we can predict to not be very useful. In particular, we find that the solution process produces lots of data with very little new information. In modular Bayesian analyses, complex models are composed of distinct modules, each representing different aspects of the data or prior information. In this context, fully Bayesian approaches can sometimes lead to undesirable feedback between modules, compromising the integrity of the inference. This paper focuses on the "cut-distribution" which prevents unwanted influence between modules by "cutting" feedback. The multiple imputation (DS) algorithm is standard practice for approximating the cut-distribution, but it can be computationally intensive, especially when the number of imputations required is large. An enhanced method is proposed, the Emulating the Conditional Posterior (ECP) algorithm, which leverages emulation to increase the number of imputations. Through numerical experiment it is demonstrated that the ECP algorithm outperforms the traditional DS approach in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency, particularly when resources are constrained. It is also shown how the DS algorithm can be improved using ideas from design of experiments. This work also provides practical recommendations on algorithm choice based on the computational demands of sampling from the prior and cut-distributions.

The assembly of galaxy clusters is understood to be a hierarchical process with a continuous accretion of galaxies over time, which increases the cluster size and mass. Late-type galaxies that fall into clusters can undergo ram-pressure stripping, forming extended gas tails within which star formation can happen. The number, location, and tail orientations of such galaxies provide clues about the galaxy infall process, the assembly of the cluster over time, and the consequences of infall for galaxy evolution. Here, we utilise the $\sim$ 0.5 degree diameter circular field of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope to image six galaxy clusters at z < 0.06 that are known to contain jellyfish galaxies. We searched for stripping candidates in the ultraviolet images of these clusters, which revealed 54 candidates showing signs of unilateral extra-planar emission, due to ram-pressure stripping. Seven candidates had already been identified as likely stripping based on optical B-band imaging. We identified 47 new candidates through UV imaging. Spectroscopic redshift information is available for 39 of these candidate galaxies, of which 19 are associated with six clusters. The galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts that are not part of the clusters appear to be within structures at different redshifts identified as additional peaks in the redshift distribution of galaxies, indicating that they might be ram-pressure stripped or disturbed galaxies in other structures along the line of sight. We examine the orbital history of these galaxies based on their location in the position-velocity phase-space diagram and explore a possible connection to the orientation of the tail direction among cluster member candidates. Black hole demographics in different environments is critical in view of recent results on massive-stars binarity, and of the multi-messenger detectability of compact objects mergers. But the identification and characterization of non-interacting black holes is elusive, especially in the sparse field stellar population. A candidate non-interactive black hole (BH)+red giant (RG) binary system, 2MASSJ05215658+4359220, was identified by Thompson et al.(2019). We obtained Astrosat/UVIT Far-Ultraviolet (FUV) imaging and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV-optical imaging and spectroscopy of the source, to test possible scenarios for the optically-elusive companion. HST/STIS spectra from about 1,600 to 10,230Ang are best fit by the combination of two stellar sources, a red giant with Teff=4250 (uncertainty 150K), logg=2.0, Radius_RG=27.8Rsun (assuming a single-temperature atmosphere), and a subgiant companion with Teff=6,000K, Radius_comp=2.7Rsun, or Teff=5,270K, Radius_comp=4.2Rsun using models with one-tenth or one-third solar metallicity respectively, logg=3.0, extinction E(B-V)=0.50(uncertainty 0.2), adopting the DR3 Gaia distance D=2,463pc (uncertainty 120pc). No FUV data existed prior to our programs. STIS spectra give an upper limit of 10e-17ergs cm-2 s-1 Ang-1 shortward of 2300Ang; an upper limit of >25.7ABmag was obtained in two UVIT FUV broad-bands. The non-detection of FUV flux rules out a compact companion such as a hot WD. The STIS spectrum shows strong MgII lambda2800Ang emission, typical of chromospherically active red giants. The masses inferred by comparison with evolutionary tracks, about 1 Msun for the red giant and between 1.1 and 1.6Msun for the subgiant companion, suggest past mass transfer, although the red giant currently does not fill its Roche lobe. Confidential Computing is a security paradigm designed to protect data in-use by leveraging hardware-based Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs). While TEEs offer significant security benefits, the need for user trust remains a challenge, as attestation alone cannot guarantee the absence of vulnerabilities or backdoors. To address this, we propose a Confidential Computing Transparency framework with progressive levels of transparency. This framework goes beyond current measures like open-source code and audits by incorporating accountability for reviewers and robust technical safeguards, creating a comprehensive trust chain. Our tiered approach provides a practical pathway to achieving transparency in complex, real-world systems. Through a user study with 400 participants, we demonstrate that higher levels of transparency are associated with increased user comfort, particularly for sensitive data types.

Given two four-dimensional symplectic manifolds, together with knots in their boundaries, we define an ``anchored symplectic embedding'' to be a symplectic embedding, together with a two-dimensional symplectic cobordism between the knots (in the four-dimensional cobordism determined by the embedding). We use techniques from embedded contact homology to determine quantitative critera for when anchored symplectic embeddings exist, for many examples of toric domains. In particular we find examples where ordinarily symplectic embeddings exist, but they cannot be upgraded to anchored symplectic embeddings unless one enlarges the target domain., Comment: 30 pages, 3 figures

We study the Hanle and spin polarization recovery effects on resident electrons in a monolayer MoSe$_2$ on EuS. We demonstrate that localized electrons provide the main contribution to the spin dynamics signal at low temperatures below 15~K for small magnetic fields of only a few mT. The spin relaxation of these electrons is determined by random effective magnetic fields due to a contact spin interaction, namely the hyperfine interaction with the nuclei in MoSe$_2$ or the exchange interaction with the magnetic ions of the EuS film. From the magnetic field angular dependence of the spin polarization we evaluate the anisotropy of the intervalley electron $g$-factor and the spin relaxation time. The non-zero in-plane $g$-factor $|g_x|\approx 0.1$, the value of which is comparable to its dispersion, is attributed to randomly localized electrons in the MoSe$_2$ layer., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is an established palliative treatment for drug resistant epilepsy. While effective for many patients, its mechanism of action is incompletely understood. Predicting individuals' response, or optimum stimulation parameters, is challenging. Computational modelling has informed other problems in epilepsy but, to our knowledge, has not been applied to VNS. We started with an established, four-population neural mass model (NMM), capable of reproducing the seizure-like dynamics of a thalamocortical circuit. We extended this to include 18 further neural populations, representing nine other brain regions relevant to VNS, with connectivity based on existing literature. We modelled stimulated afferent vagal fibres as projecting to the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), which receives input from the vagus nerve in vivo. Bifurcation analysis of a deterministic version of the model showed higher background NTS input made the model monostable at a fixed point (FP), representing normal activity, while lower inputs produce bistability between the FP and a limit cycle (LC), representing the seizure state. Adding noise produced transitions between seizure and normal states. This stochastic model spent decreasing time in the seizure state with increasing background NTS input, until seizures were abolished, consistent with the deterministic model. Simulated VNS stimulation, modelled as a 30 Hz square wave, was summed with the background input to the NTS and was found to reduce total seizure duration in a dose-dependent manner, similar to expectations in vivo. We have successfully produced an in silico model of VNS in epilepsy, capturing behaviour seen in vivo. This may aid understanding therapeutic mechanisms of VNS in epilepsy and provides a starting point to (i) determine which patients might respond best to VNS, and (ii) optimise individuals' treatments.

Scalable surrogate models enable efficient emulation of computer models (or simulators), particularly when dealing with large ensembles of runs. While Gaussian Process (GP) models are commonly employed for emulation, they face limitations in scaling to truly large datasets. Furthermore, when dealing with dense functional output, such as spatial or time-series data, additional complexities arise, requiring careful handling to ensure fast emulation. This work presents a highly scalable emulator for functional data, building upon the works of Kennedy and O'Hagan (2001) and Higdon et al. (2008), while incorporating the local approximate Gaussian Process framework proposed by Gramacy and Apley (2015). The emulator utilizes global GP lengthscale parameter estimates to scale the input space, leading to a substantial improvement in prediction speed. We demonstrate that our fast approximation-based emulator can serve as a viable alternative to the methods outlined in Higdon et al. (2008) for functional response, while drastically reducing computational costs. The proposed emulator is applied to quickly calibrate the multiphysics continuum hydrodynamics simulator FLAG with a large ensemble of 20000 runs. We present the results of the first large-scale study into Android markets that offer modified or modded apps: apps whose features and functionality have been altered by a third-party. We analyse over 146k (thousand) apps obtained from 13 of the most popular modded app markets. Around 90% of apps we collect are altered in some way when compared to the official counterparts on Google Play. Modifications include games cheats, such as infinite coins or lives; mainstream apps with premium features provided for free; and apps with modified advertising identifiers or excluded ads. We find the original app developers lose significant potential revenue due to: the provision of paid for apps for free (around 5% of the apps across all markets); the free availability of premium features that require payment in the official app; and modified advertising identifiers. While some modded apps have all trackers and ads removed (3%), in general, the installation of these apps is significantly more risky for the user than the official version: modded apps are ten times more likely to be marked as malicious and often request additional permissions., Comment: To be published in the 2024 Symposium on Electronic Crime Research (eCrime 2024)

The Cosmological Advanced Survey Telescope for Optical and ultraviolet Research (CASTOR) is a proposed Canadian-led 1m-class space telescope that will carry out ultraviolet and blue-optical wide-field imaging, spectroscopy, and photometry. CASTOR will provide an essential bridge in the post-Hubble era, preventing a protracted UV-optical gap in space astronomy and enabling an enormous range of discovery opportunities from the solar system to the nature of the Cosmos, in conjunction with the other great wide-field observatories of the next decade (e.g., Euclid, Roman, Vera Rubin). FORECASTOR (Finding Optics Requirements and Exposure times for CASTOR) will supply a coordinated suite of mission-planning tools that will serve as the one-stop shop for proposal preparation, data reduction, and analysis for the CASTOR mission. We present the first of these tools: a pixel-based, user-friendly, extensible, multi-mission exposure time calculator (ETC) built in Python, including a modern browser-based graphical user interface that updates in real time. We then provide several illustrative examples of FORECASTOR's use that advance the design of planned legacy surveys for the CASTOR mission: a search for the most massive white dwarfs in the Magellanic Clouds; a study of the frequency of flaring activity in M stars, their distribution and impacts on habitability of exoplanets; mapping the proper motions of faint stars in the Milky Way; wide and deep galaxy surveys; and time-domain studies of active galactic nuclei., Comment: Updated references and acknowledgements to match published version. 24 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, published in AJ

We define a dynamical zeta function for nondegenerate Liouville domains, in terms of Reeb dynamics on the boundary. We use filtered equivariant symplectic homology to (i) extend the definition of the zeta function to a more general class of "dynamically tame" Liouville domains, and (ii) show that the zeta function of a dynamically tame Liouville domain is invariant under exact symplectomorphism of the interior. Given a maximally symmetric $d$-dimensional background with isometry algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, a symmetric and traceless rank-$s$ field $\phi_{a(s)}$ satisfying the massive Klein-Gordon equation furnishes a collection of massive $\mathfrak{g}$-representations with spins $j\in \{0,1,\cdots,s\}$. In this paper we construct the spin-$(s,j)$ projectors, which are operators that isolate the part of $\phi_{a(s)}$ that furnishes the representation from this collection carrying spin $j$. In the case of an (anti-)de Sitter ((A)dS$_d$) background, we find that the poles of the projectors encode information about (partially-)massless representations, in agreement with observations made earlier in $d=3,4$. We then use these projectors to facilitate a systematic derivation of two-derivative actions with a propagating massless spin-$s$ mode. In addition to reproducing the massless spin-$s$ Fronsdal action, this analysis generates new actions possessing higher-depth gauge symmetry. In (A)dS$_d$ we also derive the action for a partially-massless spin-$s$ depth-$t$ field with $1\leq t \leq s$. The latter utilises the minimum number of auxiliary fields, and corresponds to the action originally proposed by Zinoviev after gauging away all St\"{u}ckelberg fields. Some higher-derivative actions are also presented, and in $d=3$ are used to construct (i) generalised higher-spin Cotton tensors in (A)dS$_3$; and (ii) topologically-massive actions with higher-depth gauge symmetry. We consider dynamically convex (star-shaped) domains in a symplectic vector space of dimension 4. For such a domain, a "Hopf orbit" is a closed characteristic in the boundary which is unknotted and has self-linking number -1. We show that the minimum action among Hopf orbits exists (without any nondegeneracy hypothesis) and defines a symplectic capacity for dynamically convex domains in four dimensions. We further show that this capacity agrees with the first ECH capacity for dynamically convex domains. Combined with a result of Edtmair, this implies that for dynamically convex domains in four dimensions, the first ECH capacity agrees with the cylinder capacity., Comment: 24 pages, minor corrections

Personal item tracking devices are popular for locating lost items such as keys, wallets, and suitcases. Originally created to help users find personal items quickly, these devices are now being abused by stalkers and domestic abusers to track their victims' location over time. Some device manufacturers created `anti-stalking features' in response, and later improved on them after criticism that they were insufficient. We analyse the effectiveness of the anti-stalking features with five brands of tracking devices through a gamified naturalistic quasi-experiment in collaboration with the Assassins' Guild student society. Despite participants knowing they might be tracked, and being incentivised to detect and remove the tracker, the anti-stalking features were not useful and were rarely used. We also identify additional issues with feature availability, usability, and effectiveness. These failures combined imply a need to greatly improve the presence of anti-stalking features to prevent trackers being abused.

This thesis is dedicated to the study of (super)spin projection operators and their applications on maximally symmetric (super)space backgrounds in three and four dimensions. On such backgrounds, the irreducible representations of the associated isometry (super)algebra may be realised on the space of tensor (super)fields satisfying certain differential constraints. The (super)spin projectors isolate the component of an unconstrained (super)field which furnishes the irreducible representation with maximal (super)spin. The explicit form of these (super)projectors are found in the following backgrounds: three-dimensional ($3d$) $\mathcal{N}$-extended Minkowski superspace $\mathbb{M}^{3|2 \mathcal{N}}$; $3d$ (anti-)de Sitter space (A)dS$_3$; $3d$ $\mathcal{N} = 1$ anti-de Sitter superspace AdS$^{3|2}$; four-dimensional ($4d$) $\mathcal{N} = 1$ anti-de Sitter superspace AdS$^{4|4}$; and $4d$ $\mathcal{N} = 2$ anti-de Sitter superspace AdS$^{4|8}$. An array of novel applications are investigated, with an emphasis placed on the interplay between (super)projectors and (super)conformal higher-spin theory. Another major component of this thesis consists of a detailed study of massless higher-spin gauge models with $\mathcal{N} = 2$ AdS supersymmetry in three dimensions. We prove that every Reeb flow on a closed connected three-manifold has either two or infinitely many simple periodic orbits, assuming that the associated contact structure has torsion first Chern class. As a special case, we prove a conjecture of Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder published in 2003 asserting that a smooth and autonomous Hamiltonian flow on $\mathbb{R}^4$ has either two or infinitely many simple periodic orbits on any regular compact connected energy level that is transverse to the radial vector field. Other corollaries settle some old problems about Finsler metrics: we show that every Finsler metric on $S^2$ has either two or infinitely many prime closed geodesics; and we show that a Finsler metric on $S^2$ with at least one closed geodesic that is not irrationally elliptic must have infinitely many prime closed geodesics. [Context] Researchers analyze underground forums to study abuse and cybercrime activities. Due to the size of the forums and the domain expertise required to identify criminal discussions, most approaches employ supervised machine learning techniques to automatically classify the posts of interest. [Goal] Human annotation is costly. How to select samples to annotate that account for the structure of the forum? [Method] We present a methodology to generate stratified samples based on information about the centrality properties of the population and evaluate classifier performance. [Result] We observe that by employing a sample obtained from a uniform distribution of the post degree centrality metric, we maintain the same level of precision but significantly increase the recall (+30%) compared to a sample whose distribution is respecting the population stratification. We find that classifiers trained with similar samples disagree on the classification of criminal activities up to 33% of the time when deployed on the entire forum.

Computational models for understanding and predicting fire in wildland and managed lands are increasing in impact. Data characterizing the fuels and environment is needed to continue improvement in the fidelity and reliability of fire outcomes. This paper addresses a gap in the characterization and population of mid-story fuels, which are not easily observable either through traditional survey, where data collection is time consuming, or with remote sensing, where the mid-story is typically obscured by forest canopy. We present a methodology to address populating a mid-story using a generative model for fuel placement that captures key concepts of spatial density and heterogeneity that varies by regional or local environmental conditions. The advantage of using a parameterized generative model is the ability to calibrate (or `tune') the generated fuels based on comparison to limited observation datasets or with expert guidance, and we show how this generative model can balance information from these sources to capture the essential characteristics of the wildland fuels environment. In this paper we emphasize the connection of terrestrial LiDAR (TLS) as the observations used to calibrate of the generative model, as TLS is a promising method for supporting forest fuels assessment. The Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph instrument (NIRISS) is the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) contribution to the suite of four science instruments of JWST. As one of the three NIRISS observing modes, the Single Object Slitless Spectroscopy (SOSS) mode is tailor-made to undertake time-series observations of exoplanets to perform transit spectroscopy. The SOSS permits observing point sources between 0.6 and 2.8 um at a resolving power of 650 at 1.25 um using a slit-less cross-dispersing grism while its defocussing cylindrical lens enables observing targets as bright as J=6.7 by spreading light across 23 pixels along the cross-dispersion axis. This paper officially presents the design of the SOSS mode, its operation, characterization, and its performance, from ground-based testing and flight-based Commissioning. On-sky measurements demonstrate a peak photon conversion efficiency of 55% at 1.2 um. The first time-series on the A-type star BD+60o1753 achieves a flux stability close to the photon-noise limit, so far tested to a level of 20 parts per million on 40-minute time-scales after simply subtracting a long-term trend. Uncorrected 1/f noise residuals underneath the spectral traces add an extra source of noise equivalent to doubling the readout noise. Preliminary analysis of a HAT-P-14b transit time-series indicates that it is difficult to remove all the noise in pixels with partially saturated ramps. Overall, the SOSS delivers performance at the level required to tackle key exoplanet science programs such as detecting secondary atmospheres on terrestrial planets and measuring abundances of several chemical species in gas giants., Comment: 41 pages, 28 figures, accepted for publication in PASP

The Near-Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) is the science module of the Canadian-built Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRISS has four observing modes: 1) broadband imaging featuring seven of the eight NIRCam broadband filters, 2) wide-field slitless spectroscopy (WFSS) at a resolving power of $\sim$150 between 0.8 and 2.2 $\mu$m, 3) single-object cross-dispersed slitless spectroscopy (SOSS) enabling simultaneous wavelength coverage between 0.6 and 2.8 $\mu$m at R$\sim$700, a mode optimized for exoplanet spectroscopy of relatively bright ($J<6.3$) stars and 4) aperture masking interferometry (AMI) between 2.8 and 4.8 $\mu$m enabling high-contrast ($\sim10^{-3}-10^{-4}$) imaging at angular separations between 70 and 400 milliarcsec for relatively bright ($M<8$) sources. This paper presents an overview of the NIRISS instrument, its design, its scientific capabilities, and a summary of in-flight performance. NIRISS shows significantly better response shortward of $\sim2.5\,\mu$m resulting in 10-40% sensitivity improvement for broadband and low-resolution spectroscopy compared to pre-flight predictions. Two time-series observations performed during instrument commissioning in the SOSS mode yield very stable spectro-photometry performance within $\sim$10% of the expected noise. The first space-based companion detection of the tight binary star AB Dor AC through AMI was demonstrated.

The high critical magnetic field and relatively high critical temperature of niobium nitride (NbN) make it a promising material candidate for applications in superconducting quantum technology. However, NbN-based devices and circuits are sensitive to decoherence sources such as two-level system (TLS) defects. Here, we numerically and experimentally investigate NbN superconducting microwave coplanar waveguide resonator arrays, with a 100 nm thickness, capacitively coupled to a common coplanar waveguide on a silicon chip. We observe that the resonators' internal quality factor (Qi) decreases from Qi ~ 1.07*10^6 in a high power regime (< nph > = 27000) to Qi ~ 1.36 *10^5 in single photon regime at temperature T = 100 mK. Data from this study is consistent with the TLS theory, which describes the TLS interactions in resonator substrates and interfaces. Moreover, we study the temperature dependence internal quality factor and frequency tuning of the coplanar waveguide resonators to characterise the quasiparticle density of NbN. We observe that the increase in kinetic inductance at higher temperatures is the main reason for the frequency shift. Finally, we measure the resonators' resonance frequency and internal quality factor at single photon regime in response to in-plane magnetic fields B||. We verify that Qi stays well above 10^4 up to B|| = 240 mT in the photon number < nph > = 1.8 at T = 100 mK. Our results may pave the way for realising robust microwave superconducting circuits for circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) at high magnetic fields necessary for fault-tolerant quantum computing, and ultrasensitive quantum sensing.

We propose a new gauge prepotential $\Upsilon_i$ describing the four-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=2$ superconformal gravitino multiplet. The former naturally arises via a superspace reduction of the ${\mathcal N}=3$ conformal supergravity multiplet. A locally superconformal chiral action for $\Upsilon_i$, which is gauge-invariant in arbitrary conformally-flat backgrounds, is derived. This construction readily yields a new superprojector, which maps an isospinor superfield $\Psi_i$ to a multiplet characterised by the properties of a conformal supercurrent associated with $\Upsilon_i$. NGC 5291, an early-type galaxy surrounded by a giant HI ring, is believed to be formed from collision with another galaxy. Several star forming complexes and tidal dwarf galaxies are distributed along the collisional ring which are sites of star formation in environments where extreme dynamical effects are involved. Dynamical effects can affect the star formation properties and the spatial distribution of star forming complexes along the tidal features. To study and quantify the star formation activity in the main body and in the ring structure of the NGC 5291 system, we use high spatial resolution FUV and NUV imaging observations from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope onboard AstroSat. A total of 57 star-forming knots are identified to be part of this interacting system out of which 12 are new detections (star forming complexes that lie inside the HI contour) compared to the previous measurements from lower resolution UV imaging. We estimate the attenuation in UV for each of the resolved star-forming knots using the UV spectral slope $\beta$, derived from the FUV-NUV colour. Using the extinction corrected UV fluxes, we derive the star formation rate of the resolved star forming complexes. The extinction corrected total star formation rate of this system is estimated as 1.75 $\pm$ 0.04 $M_{\odot}/yr$. The comparison with dwarf galaxy populations (BCD, Sm and dIm galaxies) in the nearby Universe shows that many of the knots in the NGC 5291 system have SFR values comparable to the SFR of BCD galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Legislators and policymakers worldwide are debating options for suppressing illegal, harmful and undesirable material online. Drawing on several quantitative data sources, we show that deplatforming an active community to suppress online hate and harassment, even with a substantial concerted effort involving several tech firms, can be hard. Our case study is the disruption of the largest and longest-running harassment forum Kiwi Farms in late 2022, which is probably the most extensive industry effort to date. Despite the active participation of a number of tech companies over several consecutive months, this campaign failed to shut down the forum and remove its objectionable content. While briefly raising public awareness, it led to rapid platform displacement and traffic fragmentation. Part of the activity decamped to Telegram, while traffic shifted from the primary domain to previously abandoned alternatives. The forum experienced intermittent outages for several weeks, after which the community leading the campaign lost interest, traffic was directed back to the main domain, users quickly returned, and the forum was back online and became even more connected. The forum members themselves stopped discussing the incident shortly thereafter, and the net effect was that forum activity, active users, threads, posts and traffic were all cut by about half. Deplatforming a community without a court order raises philosophical issues about censorship versus free speech; ethical and legal issues about the role of industry in online content moderation; and practical issues on the efficacy of private-sector versus government action. Deplatforming a dispersed community using a series of court orders against individual service providers appears unlikely to be very effective if the censor cannot incapacitate the key maintainers, whether by arresting them, enjoining them or otherwise deterring them.
