Abstract: Beam Drift Chamber (BDC) is designed to reconstruct the trajectories of incident rare isotope beams provided by RAON (Rare isotope Accelerator complex for ON-line experiments) into the experimental target of LAMPS (Large Acceptance Multi-Purpose Spectrometer). To conduct the performance test of the BDC, the prototype BDC (pBDC) is manufactured and evaluated with the high energy ion beams from HIMAC (Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba) facility in Japan. Two kinds of ion beams, 100 MeV proton, and 200 MeV/u $^{12}$C, have been utilized for this evaluation, and the track reconstruction efficiency and position resolution have been measured as the function of applied high voltage. 3. Coherent state-based generating function approach for Franck–Condon transitions and beyond

Abstract: One-photon and multi-photon absorption, spontaneous and stimulated photon emission, resonance Raman scattering and electron transfer are important molecular processes that commonly involve combined vibrational-electronic (vibronic) transitions. The corresponding vibronic transition profiles in the energy domain are usually determined by Franck-Condon factors (FCFs), the squared norm of overlap integrals between vibrational wavefunctions of different electronic states. FC profiles are typically highly congested for large molecular systems and the spectra usually become not well-resolvable at elevated temperatures. The (theoretical) analyses of such spectra are even more difficult when vibrational mode mixing (Duschinsky) effects are significant, because contributions from different modes are in general not separable, even within the harmonic approximation. A few decades ago Doktorov, Malkin and Man'ko [1979 J. Mol. Spectrosc. 77, 178] developed a coherent state-based generating function approach and exploited the dynamical symmetry of vibrational Hamiltonians for the Duschinsky relation to describe FC transitions at zero Kelvin. Recently, the present authors extended the method to incorporate thermal, single vibronic level, non-Condon and multi-photon effects in energy, time and probability density domains for the efficient calculation and interpretation of vibronic spectra. Herein, recent developments and corresponding generating functions are presented for single vibronic levels related to fluorescence, resonance Raman scattering and anharmonic transition.

4. Publics’ perceptions of legitimacy in corporate social advocacy: A computational analysis of the role of ideological congruence

Abstract: For corporations engaged in corporate social advocacy (CSA), establishing legitimacy among publics is challenging when they take stands along clear ideological lines on controversial issues. This study examined two questions: (1) how would the congruence between individuals’ political ideologies and corporations’ CSA stances influence perceived CSA legitimacy; and (2) how would individuals’ political ideology strength moderate this relationship? A computational analysis was conducted to examine individual-level ideological congruence and perceived CSA legitimacy in six real-world CSA events. Pairing sentiment analysis with a self-trained model for individual ideology detection, this study cross-analyzed naturalistic data generated by 5181 ordinary users involved in the CSA events on Twitter. It was found that individuals’ perceptions of corporations involved in CSA were highly dependent on the extent to which their own political ideologies were congruent with the corporations’ CSA stances. Also, the influence of ideological congruence was amplified among individuals with stronger political ideologies. However, CSA legitimacy perceptions can be highly situational, with individual events potentially yielding varied results depending on factors such as the issue’s socio-historical context. This study overall demonstrates the important role that individual-level political factors can play in influencing publics’ CSA legitimacy perceptions. This study also highlights the feasibility of using cutting-edge computational methods in assessing publics’ voices on social media as a source of CSA legitimacy.

5. Influence of emotions on coping behaviors in crisis: a computational analysis of the COVID-19 outbreak

Abstract: Widespread public crises often give rise to the proliferation of sensationalized rumors and conspiracy theories, which can evoke a variety of public emotions. Despite the growing importance of research on the relationship between emotions and coping behaviors in crisis, a dearth of natural observation-based investigation has been limiting theory development. To address this gap, this study conducted computational research to study the U.S. public’s discrete emotions and coping behaviors during the COVID-19 outbreak crisis, analyzing Twitter data, Google Trends data, and Google Community Mobility data. The results revealed that anger and fear were relatively more prominent emotions experienced by the public than other discrete emotions. Regarding the impacts of emotions on coping behaviors, it was found that the prevalence of low-certainty and retreat emotions was related to increased information-seeking and information-transmitting behaviors. Also, the prevalence of both high-certainty and low-certainty emotions during the COVID-19 outbreak was positively related to the public’s compliance with public health recommendations.

Abstract: We investigate the photoluminescence temperature dependence of individual InAs/InGaAlAs quantum dots emitting in the optical telecommunication bands. The high-density dots are grown on InP substrates and the selection of a smaller dot number is done by the processing of suitable nanometer sized mesas. Using ensembles of only a few dots inside such mesas, their temperature stability, inter-dot charge transfer, as well as, carrier capture and escape mechanisms out of the dots are investigated systematically. This includes the discussion of the dot ensemble and individual dots. Among the single-dot properties, we investigate the transition of emission lines from zero-phonon line to acoustic phonon sideband dominated line shape with temperature. Moreover, the presence of single recombination lines up to temperatures of around 150 K is demonstrated., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Background: Current management practices and outcomes in weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation are poorly understood. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, management, timings, risk for failure, and outcomes of weaning in patients requiring at least 2 days of invasive mechanical ventilation. Methods: WEAN SAFE was an international, multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study done in 481 intensive care units in 50 countries. Eligible participants were older than 16 years, admitted to a participating intensive care unit, and receiving mechanical ventilation for 2 calendar days or longer. We defined weaning initiation as the first attempt to separate a patient from the ventilator, successful weaning as no reintubation or death within 7 days of extubation, and weaning eligibility criteria based on positive end-expiratory pressure, fractional concentration of oxygen in inspired air, and vasopressors. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients successfully weaned at 90 days. Key secondary outcomes included weaning duration, timing of weaning events, factors associated with weaning delay and weaning failure, and hospital outcomes. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03255109. Findings: Between Oct 4, 2017, and June 25, 2018, 10 232 patients were screened for eligibility, of whom 5869 were enrolled. 4523 (77·1%) patients underwent at least one separation attempt and 3817 (65·0%) patients were successfully weaned from ventilation at day 90. 237 (4·0%) patients were transferred before any separation attempt, 153 (2·6%) were transferred after at least one separation attempt and not successfully weaned, and 1662 (28·3%) died while invasively ventilated. The median time from fulfilling weaning eligibility criteria to first separation attempt was 1 day (IQR 0–4), and 1013 (22·4%) patients had a delay in initiating first separation of 5 or more days. Abstract: Large-scale, weakly-supervised speech recognition models, such as Whisper, have demonstrated impressive results on speech recognition across domains and languages. However, their application to long audio transcription via buffered or sliding window approaches is prone to drifting, hallucination & repetition; and prohibits batched transcription due to their sequential nature. Further, timestamps corresponding each utterance are prone to inaccuracies and word-level timestamps are not available out-of-the-box. To overcome these challenges, we present WhisperX, a time-accurate speech recognition system with word-level timestamps utilising voice activity detection and forced phoneme alignment. In doing so, we demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on long-form transcription and word segmentation benchmarks. Abstract: Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has shown promising results in severe emphysema. However, intraoperative indicators are needed to define optimal resection volumes. Diffusing capacity (DLCO) worsens with larger LVRS and may correlate with pulmonary artery (PA) pressure. We hypothesized that there would be a greater increase in PA pressures with larger volume LVRS in an inhaled elastase animal emphysema model. Twenty-one rabbits were induced with 15,000 units of elastase via an endotracheal tube. Four weeks later, bilateral LVRS was performed through a median sternotomy using an endoscopic stapler. PA pressures were measured prior to LVRS, immediately after LVRS, and at sacrifice. Single-breath DLCO, static pressure-volume relationships, and forced expiratory flows were measured prior to induction and at corresponding times to PA pressures. Systolic PA pressures increased in both groups immediately after LVRS (small: 2. 67 +/- 9.2 mm Hg, ANOVA, P = 0.023; large: 3.8 +/- 8.5 mm Hg, P = 0. 002), and then decreased at time of sacrifice 1 week later (small: 9. 43 +/- 4.8 mm Hg, ANOVA, P = 0.053; large: 5.2 +/- 7.3 mm Hg, P = 0. 552). The decrease, at sacrifice, in PA pressures was greater for small LVRS animals than large LVRS animals. The mortality rate (MR) for the small resection group was 0%, whereas that for the large resection group was 24%. The MR associated with larger LVRS was appreciably greater than that associated with small LVRS. These studies suggest that PA pressures may prove to be a useful intraoperative indicator for limits of resection.

Abstract: ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to investigate in an elastase-induced emphysema rabbit model the effects of increasing resection volumes during lung volume reduction surgery on pulmonary compliance, forced expiratory air flow, and diffusing capacity to assess factors limiting optimal resection.MethodsEmphysema was induced in 68 New Zealand White rabbits with 15,000 units of aerosolized elastase. Static respiratory system compliance, forced expiratory flow, and single-breath diffusing capacity were measured before the induction of emphysema, after the induction of emphysema, and 1 week after a bilateral upper and middle lobe lung volume reduction operation.ResultsStatic respiratory system compliance with 60 mL insufflation above functional residual capacity increased with emphysema induction and then decreased progressively with resection of larger volumes of lung tissue (P =.001 by analysis of variance). Expiratory flow improved after lung resection in the rabbits with large resection volumes. In contrast, diffusing capacity tended to deteriorate with larger resection volumes (P =. 18).ConclusionImprovements in respiratory system compliance and forced expiratory flow after lung volume reduction operations may account for the improvements seen clinically. Declines in diffusing capacity with extensive lung reduction may limit the clinical benefits associated with greater tissue resection volumes. Future investigations with animal models may reveal other physiologic parameters that may further guide optimal lung volume reduction procedures.

Abstract: BackgroundWhile there is renewed interest in lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) for treatment of emphysema, many aspects of the operation such as patient selection and surgical end points of excision are uncertain. We studied the effects of LVRS on measured lung volumes and diffusion capacity in an animal model to investigate optimal resection volumes.MethodsEmphysema was induced in 32 New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits using aerosolized elastase. Helium dilution lung volumes and single breath DLCO were measured concurrently at baseline, following induction of emphysema (preop), and 1 week postoperatively (postop) following LVRS. Bilateral upper and middle lobe stapled lung resections were performed through midline sternotomies with excision of variable amounts of lung tissue from 1.8 to 5.8 g.ResultsFRC increased following induction of emphysema and decreased postoperatively. DLCO improved with increasing lung tissue resection up to 3 g of tissue and then decreased as even greater amounts were removed (r = 0.54).ConclusionsMeasured lung volumes increase with development of emphysema and appropriately decrease in response to LVRS in this rabbit model. DLCO improves with moderate resection but then decreases with excessive excision of lung quantities and may help define one physiologic operative end point. In this rabbit model, excision of approximately 30% of lung volume was optimal and prevented further decrease in diffusion capacity.

Abstract: Clinical use of staple lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has proliferated for treatment of emphysema despite limited data regarding efficacy or optimal techniques. Recent studies in animal models of obstructive lung disease describe the decrease in lung compliance and increase in airway support as mechanisms of an improvement in pulmonary functions analogous to human data. We describe contrasting results in an animal model of bullous lung disease with a mixed but predominantly restrictive pattern of lung disease. Mixed restrictive and bullous lung disease was induced in 17 New Zealand white rabbits with i.v. Sephadex beads and endotracheally instilled carrageenan. Unilateral stapled lung volume reduction surgery was performed at 5 weeks postinduction of emphysema on the right lower lobe by lateral thoracotomy using a pediatric stapler. Static trans-pleural pressures were measured at 60, 40, and 20 cm3 inflation at preinduction (baseline), pre- and postoperatively, and 1 week postoperatively in anesthetized animals. Lungs were then harvested en bloc and examined histopathologically. The effects of volume reduction surgery on static lung compliance, lung conductance, and forced expiratory flows (FEF) were assessed. Five weeks after induction of lung disease, the animals had no significant change in static compliance and forced expiratory volume in 0.5 s (FEV0.5) or lung conductance compared to baseline. Immediately following LVRS, the animals showed a significant decrease in static compliance, FEV0.5, and conductance. One week postoperatively, compliance increased to approximately baseline levels along with a slight increase in FEFs and conductance toward preoperative levels. Histology examination revealed restrictive and bullous lung disease. Thus, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using an animal model for evaluation of volume reduction therapy for restrictive-obstructive lung disease. Physiologically, this model showed decrease conductance and decreased forced expiratory flows following lung volume reduction despite increased recoil. This is in contrast to increased conductance and flows seen in humans with severe emphysema following surgery and suggests that current criteria excluding patients with a significant restrictive component to their lung disease from LVRS surgery may be justified.

Abstract: Stapled lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) has recently been described for treatment of emphysema. Many questions arise regarding physiologic mechanisms of response from surgical treatment of emphysema. The objective of this study was to develop an animal model for the study of lung volume reduction surgery in diffuse heterogeneous emphysema. We hypothesized that elastic recoil would increase, static respiratory system compliance would decrease, and expiratory flows would increase after lung volume reduction surgery in animals with emphysema. In the study, emphysema was induced in 31 New Zealand White rabbits (3-5 kg) with endotracheally aerosalized porcine elastase (10,000-12,000 U). Lateral thoracotomies were performed 4-6 weeks postinduction under general anesthesia and mechanical ventilatory support. Stapled volume reduction was performed on the right lower lobe using a standard multirow pediatric stapler (U.S. Surgical). Pulmonary function tests were performed at baseline (preinduction), before stapling LVRS (postemphysema induction), immediately post stapling LVRS, and 1 week poststapling. Static respiratory system compliance, flow, conductance and forced expiratory flows, and peak flows at 20 and 40 cm3 of exhaled volume were analyzed. Animals were sacrificed 1 week poststapling, and bilateral lungs were harvested for histopathology. Diffuse but heterogeneous pulmonary emphysema was seen in these animals treated with high-dose aerosolized elastase. Static compliance increased, while expiratory flows and conductance decreased after induction of emphysema. Immediately post stapled volume reduction therapy, animals had decreased static compliance. By 1 week following surgery, animals showed increased forced expiratory flows and decreased expiratory resistance, although compliance was similar to preoperative levels. In conclusion, we describe initial results in an animal model of obstructive emphysema suitable for the study of lung volume reduction surgery. Changes in pulmonary function indicate that unilateral lower lobe LVRS increases airway conductance in the rabbits. Findings from LVRS studies in animal models such as this may help explain clinical improvement following LVRS in humans.

Functional residual capacity decreased after lung volume reduction surgery in proportion to the amount of excised lung tissue. Expired flows suggested improvement in response to lung volume reduction surgery. Histologic examination confirmed presence of diffuse heterogeneous emphysema in each animal at necropsy.ConclusionsThe decreased compliance and increased airway flow after volume reduction surgery in this model parallels findings in human studies and suggests that similar mechanisms of increased elastic recoil and airway support contribute to improvement.

The role of lasers in lung volume reduction surgery remains controversial due to issues of relative efficacy and morbidity. The Nd:YAG laser is most commonly used for these procedures. We hypothesized that the shallower penetration of the Ho:YAG laser may be better suited for laser bullae coagulation and emphysema lung volume reduction with increased efficacy and reduced lung injury.MethodsThirty New Zealand White rabbits (15 normal rabbits; 15 with bullous lung disease) were evaluated with Ho:YAG compared to Nd:YAG laser exposures. Bullae were coagulated by either Ho:YAG or Nd:YAG treatment. In all animals (bullous-induced and normals), unaffected lung tissue in the upper lobes and contralateral lungs were treated with 5 spot exposures of Nd:YAG and Ho:YAG, each to assess depth of lung injury. Animals were sacrificed at Days 0, 7, and 21 and their lungs were examined histologically.ResultsHo:YAG and Nd:YAG exposures caused equivalent lung injury to normal lung tissue. In the acute phase, parenchymal necrosis depth was similar for both Ho:YAG and Nd:YAG (850 +/- 273 microns vs. 900 +/- 270 microns respectively, p = 0.7). By Day 7, lung necrosis depth was 925 +/- 133 microns Ho:YAG vs. 1225 +/- 235 microns Nd:YAG (p = 0.33), and lung fibrosis depth was 300 +/- 134 microns Ho:YAG vs. 558 +/- 127 microns Nd:YAG (p = 0.11). By Day 21, pulmonary parenchymal necrosis was not seen. Pleural fibrosis depth was maximal at Day 21, reaching 250 +/- 102 microns for Ho:YAG vs. 300 +/- 156 microns Nd:YAG (P = 0.88). Pleural necrosis depth was 67 +/- 42 microns Ho:YAG vs 48 +/- 34 microns Nd:YAG (p = 0.42) on Day 7 and resolved by Day 21. During surgical coagulation procedures, the Ho:YAG laser was dramatically more efficient in coagulating bullae. The Ho:YAG laser required less exposure at equivalent power and resulted in immediate desiccation of bullae, in sharp contrast to the Nd:YAG laser.ConclusionsBecause the Ho:YAG was more effective and did not result in more acute lung injury than the standard Nd:YAG laser in this study, Ho:YAG lasers may have improved potential for laser treatment of bullae or lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) compared to Nd:YAG lasers.

Intraoperative GV was assessed with a coefficient of variation (CV), which was defined as the standard deviation of five intraoperative blood glucose measurements divided by the mean. POD assessment was performed three times a day in the ICU and twice a day in the ward until discharge by trained medical staff. POD was diagnosed if any of the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit was positive in the ICU, and the Confusion Assessment Method was positive in the ward. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify associations between intraoperative GV and POD.Results: POD occurred in 306 (43.4%) patients. When intraoperative glycemic CV was compared as a continuous variable, the delirium group had higher intraoperative glycemic CV than the non-delirium group (22.59 [17.09, 29.68] vs 18.19 [13.00, 23.35], p < 0.001), and when intraoperative glycemic CV was classified as quartiles, the incidence of POD increased as intraoperative glycemic CV quartiles increased (first quartile 29.89%; second quartile 36.67%; third quartile 44.63%; and fourth quartile 62.64%, p < 0.001). In the multivariable logistic regression model, patients in the third quartile of intraoperative glycemic CV were 1.833 times (OR 1.833, 95% CI: 1.132– 2.967, p = 0.014), and patients in the fourth quartile of intraoperative glycemic CV were 3.645 times (OR 3.645, 95% CI: 2.235– 5.944, p < 0.001) more likely to develop POD than those in the first quartile of intraoperative glycemic CV.Conclusion: Intraoperative blood glucose fluctuation, manifested by intraoperative GV, is associated with POD after cardiac surgery. Abstract: We introduce EPIC-SOUNDS, a large-scale dataset of audio annotations capturing temporal extents and class labels within the audio stream of the egocentric videos. We propose an annotation pipeline where annotators temporally label distinguishable audio segments and describe the action that could have caused this sound. We identify actions that can be discriminated purely from audio, through grouping these free-form descriptions of audio into classes. For actions that involve objects colliding, we collect human annotations of the materials of these objects (e.g. a glass object being placed on a wooden surface), which we verify from visual labels, discarding ambiguities. Overall, EPIC-SOUNDS includes 78.4k categorised segments of audible events and actions, distributed across 44 classes as well as 39.2k non-categorised segments. Compared with small-molecule compounds, antibody-based therapeutics can more specifically recognize and bind to ligands and RTKs. Several antibody inhibitors of RTK-mediated signaling pathways, such as human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, vascular endothelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor receptor or vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2, have been developed and are widely used to treat cancer patients. However, since the therapeutic options are still limited in terms of therapeutic efficacy and types of cancers that can be treated, efforts are being made to identify and evaluate novel RTK-mediated signaling pathways as targets for more efficacious cancer treatment. The hepatocyte growth factor/c-Met signaling pathway has come into the spotlight as a promising target for development of potent cancer therapeutic agents. Multiple antibody-based therapeutics targeting hepatocyte growth factor or c-Met are currently in preclinical or clinical development. Abstract: In egocentric videos, actions occur in quick succession. We capitalise on the action's temporal context and propose a method that learns to attend to surrounding actions in order to improve recognition performance. To incorporate the temporal context, we propose a transformer-based multimodal model that ingests video and audio as input modalities, with an explicit language model providing action sequence context to enhance the predictions. We test our approach on EPIC-KITCHENS and EGTEA datasets reporting state-of-the-art performance. Our ablations showcase the advantage of utilising temporal context as well as incorporating audio input modality and language model to rescore predictions.
