Abstract

Journal of Instrumentation 17(09), P09026 (2022). doi:10.1088/1748-0221/17/09/P09026, The High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) will be installed in the ATLAS detector to mitigate pile-up effects during the High Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The design of the HGTD is based on the use of Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs), with an active thickness of 50 μm, that allow to measure with high-precision the time of arrival of particles. The HGTD will improve the particle-vertex assignment by measuring the track time with a resolution ranging from approximately 30 ps at the beginning of the HL-LHC operations to 50 ps at the end. Performances of several unirradiated, as well as neutron- and proton-irradiated, LGAD sensors from different vendors have been measured in beam test campaigns during the years 2018 and 2019 at CERN SPS and DESY. This paper presents the results obtained with data recorded by an oscilloscope synchronized with a beam telescope which provides particle position information within a resolution of a few μm. Collected charge, time resolution and hit efficiency are presented. The thermionic RF cavity gun for the Stanford FIR-FEL functions satisfactorily as an FEL accelerator, at high peak gradients from 100-140 MV/m, where the electron beam is obtained from 1.5 cell. The electron beam from the 1.5 cell cavity gun in a parameter range has been analyzed as a far infrared FEL's accelerator.

Abstract

The design and construction of a free electron laser (FEL) at a cost of $300,000 is discussed. The project, which was carried out at Stanford University, reduced the cost due to the innovative design of its components. These concerned the accelerator's microwave cavity gun, the staggered-array wiggler magnet and the on-axis hole in the upstream cavity resonator for electron ingress and radiation egress. To date, the FEL has lased at far infrared wavelengths with a micropulse duration of about 12 ps.

A staggered-array wiggler confers rapid wavelength tuning, high wiggler field, electron beam confinement and tolerance with respect to fabrication errors for a far-infrared free-electron laser. A 1. 2% wiggler field fluctuation does not influence small-signal gain. The wiggler comprises a staggered iron array situated along the solenoid center.

Abstract

Mixed mode surveys are becoming increasingly common. This has led to calls for tests of the differences in response patterns between survey modes. In this article, we present an analysis of mode effects, using data from Wave 1 of the ITC Netherlands Survey, conducted by web (CAWI) and telephone (CATI). For many of the questions, the web and telephone samples differed in the distribution of response options. This was found to be partly attributable to selection effects, since the web and telephone respondents were recruited in different ways, and the web and telephone samples differed on demographic characteristics. Another source of difference in the response option distribution was "administrative" in origin, having to do with the tendency of respondents to process the options differently depending on survey mode. This article illustrates an approach to modelling in a mixed mode survey that takes into account both selection and administration mode effects. The model is also embedded in an analysis of reactions to labels on cigarette packages using ITC data from the Netherlands, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.

Abstract

Polycrystalline samples of CaAgCoFeO ( x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) have been prepared by conventional solid-state synthesis. The x-ray diffraction patterns reveal that all the samples are single phase. The thermopower of all the samples is positive, indicating that the predominant carriers are holes over the entire temperature range. The electrical resistivity and thermopower simultaneously decrease with increasing Ag content. The highest power factor (2.66 μW cm K at 150 K) is reached for the CaAgCoFeO, representing an improvement of about 16 % compared to the undoped sample. These results suggest that the Ag is an effective doping element for enhancing the thermoelectric properties of CaCoFeO [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
