The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a multi-TeV high-luminosity linear e+e- collider under development. For an optimal exploitation of its physics potential, CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in a staged approach with three centre-of-mass energy stages ranging from a few hundred GeV up to 3 TeV. The first stage will focus on precision Standard Model physics, in particular Higgs and top-quark measurements. CERN’s Linac2 currently injects protons with a kinetic energy of 50 MeV into the PS Booster (PSB). Linac2 will be replaced by Linac4 which will inject H$^-$ ions with a kinetic energy of 160 MeV into the PSB. In order to enable the PSB for charge-exchange injection, it will be equipped with a new injection system. The proposed charge-exchange injection system will use carbon foils (one for each of the four PSB rings) to remove the electrons from the H$^-$ ions. The remaining protons will then be merged with the already circulating proton beam. Two percent of the injected beam are expected to be either incompletely stripped or unstripped, and will be sent to 4 internal $\rm{H}^0/H^-$ injection dumps (one per PSB ring). This paper focuses on the induced activation in the future injection region. The radiological impact of proposed material choices for the internal dumps has been assessed by establishing Work and Dose Plannings for the most important foreseen interventions. The expected ambient dose equivalent rates at the various work locations have been obtained by FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, the activation of the carbon foils and the derived need of protection measures during foil exchanges are discussed.

Ten different types of kickers, bumpers, and electrostatic and magnetic septa, along with certain power supplies and associated control system components, have been designed in a collaboration between CERN and MedAustron for an ion therapy centre in Wr. Neustadt (Austria). This paper focuses on the status of the special magnets work package and the improvements applied during the production. The design parameters are compared with data from measurements, hardware test and initial commissioning. The major factors contributing to the successful completion of the work package are highlighted.

During the commissioning phase of the PS Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) and the following operational period a number of limitations were observed, namely activation of the magnetic septum in straight section 16, fluctuation of the fraction of particles trapped in the islands, and instabilities of the injection trajectories in the SPS. These issues have been addressed in many ways, by either dedicated measurement campaigns or paper studies to determine mitigation measures. In this document the proposed solution of installing a dummy septum in straight section 15 of the PS ring to reduce the activation of the extraction magnetic septum is described in details.

The CERN PS Booster extraction energy will be upgraded from 1.4 to 2.0 GeV to alleviate the direct space charge tune shift in the PS. The focussing structure of the transfer line will be modified in order to better match the optics between the PSB and the PS. The optics of the PS at injection and, with it, of the transfer line can be adapted to reduce the continuous losses from the already injected and circulating beam bumped towards the septum. Experimental results of the optics optimisation and probing the injection kicker flat top are shown. Modifications of the recombination septa and the main horizontal bending magnet in the measurement line are presented.

High activation of the magnetic extraction septum of the CERN PS machine was observed due to the losses of the continuous beam extracted via the Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) method. The resulting activation is however incompatible with safe operation so a mitigation measure was required and found, namely the installation of a passive dummy septum to protect the actual one seems to provide the required reduction in activation in the extraction area. The shielded dummy septum is intended to absorb particles during the rise time of the MTE extraction kickers, avoiding the beam impact on the blade of the active magnetic extraction septum. The principle of the proposed modifications of the PS layout will be presented together with the studies aimed at finalising the new configuration.

CERN’s proton injector chain is undergoing a massive consolidation and upgrade program in order to deliver beams meeting the needs of the LHC Luminosity Upgrade. As an alternative to the upgrade of the existing Proton Synchrotron Booster (PSB), the construction of a Rapid Cycling Synchrotron (RCS) has been studied. This machine would replace the PSB and deliver beams to the LHC as well as to CERN’s rich fixed-target physics program. This paper summarizes the outcome of the feasibility study along with a tentative RCS design.

The Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) is part of the CERN LHC injector chain for ions. The LEIR extraction uses a pulsed magnetic septum, clamped around a metallic vacuum chamber. Apart from separating the ultra high vacuum in the LEIR ring from the less good vacuum in the transfer line to the PS this chamber also serves as magnetic screen and retains the septum conductor in place. The PS ion injection septum consists of a pulsed laminated magnet under vacuum, featuring a single-turn water cooled coil and a remote positioning system. The design, the construction and the commissioning of both septa are described.

Since 2001 considerable effort has been devoted to the study of a possible replacement of the continuous-transfer extraction mode from the PS to the SPS. Such an approach, called Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE), is based on capture of the beam inside stable islands of transverse phase space, generated by sextupoles and octupoles, thanks to a properly chosen tune variation. Both numerical simulations and measurements with beam were performed to understand the properties of this new extraction mode. The experimental study was completed at the end of 2004 and by the end of 2005 a scheme to implement this novel approach in the PS machine was defined and its performance assessed. This design report presents the outcome of the studies undertaken both in terms of technical issues as well as of resources necessary to implement the proposed scheme.

A sizeable part of the LHC physics programme foresees lead-lead collisions with a design luminosity of 1027 cm-2 s-1. This will be achieved after an upgrade of the ion injector chain comprising Linac3, LEIR, PS and SPS machines [1,2]. Each LHC ring will be filled in 10 min by almost 600 bunches, each of 7×107 lead ions. Central to the scheme is the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) [3,4], which transforms long pulses from Linac3 into high-brilliance bunches by means of multi-turn injection, electron cooling and accumulation. Major limitations along the chain, including space charge, intrabeam scattering, vacuum issues and emittance preservation are highlighted. The conversion from LEAR (Low Energy Antiproton Ring) to LEIR involves new magnets and power converters, high-current electron cooling, broadband RF cavities, and a UHV vacuum system with getter (NEG) coatings to achieve a few 10-12 mbar. Major hardware changes in Linac3 and the PS are also covered. An early ion scheme with fewer bunches (but each at nominal intensity) reduces the work required for early LHC ion operation in spring 2008.

In the framework of a collaboration agreement with the TERA Foundation, CERN provided the design, drawings and engineering specifications for two kickers, one chopper and three bumper magnets as well as three magnetic and two electrostatic septa, power supplies for the electrostatic septa, kickers and bumpers including control electronics for the PIMMS/TERA proton and carbon ion medical synchrotron. The first application will be in the Italian National Centre for Hadrontherapy, to be constructed in Pavia. The main features of the devices are described along with the strategic design choices, directed by the demand for very high reliability and minimum maintenance.

The different beam dynamics issues, from space-charge limitations to longitudinal instabilities are discussed, as well as the proposed technical solutions to overcome them, covering the increase of the injection energy to RF related improvements.
