16. Mixed-initiative human-robot interaction using hierarchical Bayesian networks

Abstract

As the usage of service robots becomes more sophisticated, direct communication by means of human language is required to increase the efficiency of their performance. In natural speech interaction, however, people often omit some words and rely on background knowledge or the context, resulting in ambiguity. In order to develop smarter service robots, therefore, managing the context of interaction is essential. In this correspondence, we have investigated the mixed-initiative interaction that prompts for missing information and clarifies ambiguous statements based on hierarchically designed Bayesian networks. Simulation with the Kephera II robot and a usability test have demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed method. Index Terms--Bayesian network, mixed-initiative interaction, service robot.

본 연구는 이만희의 에 나타난 심리의 공간화를 노엘 버치, 데이비드 보드웰이 스타일로서 모더니즘의 가치를 설명하기 위해 사용한 매개변수 개념에 입각해 분석한다. 심리의 공간화는 모더니즘 영화로 평가받아온 의 가장 핵심적인 면모이다. 기존의 연구들은 이를 내러티브의 맥락으로 설명해오거나, 미켈란젤로 안토니오니와의 유사성에서 미학의 근거를 찾았다. 하지만 영화 스타일의 가치는 무엇보다 영화 내적인 것에서 설명되어야 한다. 는 앙각 앵글과 계단의 결합을 아주 정교한 방식으로 조직화하면서 이 영화의 공간의 본질적인 의미를 구분 짓는 거의 모든 종류의 여정이 이러한 쇼트 구성을 통해 이뤄진다. 아내의 첫 외출 시퀀스의 대칭적 쇼트 구성은 이 짧은 여정에서만이 아니라 영화 전체에 걸쳐서 반복되고 변주된다. 즉 부분의 스타일적 규범은 전체의 규범이 되며 다시 전체의 규범은 부분으로 새겨진다. 이는 이 영화의 주제가 되는 두 개의 차원, 즉 계단을 올라가는 공간-남편-가부장적 질서와 내려가는 공간-아내-개인적인 성적 욕망 사이에서 이루어지는 아내의 고통스러운 심리를 스타일에 옮겨다 놓은 것이다. 는 계단을 오르고 내려가는 것에 불과한 기본 쇼트에서 인물의 정서, 사건에 대한 인물의 반응, 근대와 전근대의 가치의 차이 등 내러티브 차원에서 생성되는 모든 의미가 스타일을 통해 직접 도출되는 영화이다. 이것을 의 핵심적인 모더니즘 스타일이라고 말하는 이유는 영화의 스타일(형식) 자체가 사실상 주제를 의미하기 때문이다. 즉 이 스타일은 어떤 매개도 없이, 특히 내러티브에 의해 매개되거나 귀속되는 것이 아니라 오히려 내러티브와 동등한 질료로서 직접 주제를 표현하기 때문이다. 1960년대에 등장한 는 한 부분의 원리를 작품 전체에 관철시킴으로서 한국 영화스타일의 역사에서 내러티브와 스타일의 관계를 새롭게 정의한다.

Abstract

In order to ensure the validity and usability of activity recognition approaches, an agreement on a set of standard evaluation methods is needed. Due to the diversity of the sensors and other hardware employed, designing and accepting standard tests is a difficult task. This article presents an initiative to evaluate activity recognition systems: a living-lab evaluation established through an annual competition − EvAAL-AR (Evaluating Ambient Assisted Living Systems through Competitive Benchmarking − Activity Recognition). In the competition, each team brings their own activity-recognition system, which is evaluated live on the same activity scenario performed by an actor. The evaluation criteria attempt to capture the practical usability: recognition accuracy, user acceptance, recognition delay, installation complexity, and interoperability with ambient assisted living systems. The article also presents the competing systems with emphasis on two best-performing ones: (i) a system that achieved the best recognition accuracy, and (ii) a system that was evaluated as the best overall. Finally, the article presents lessons learned from the competition and ideas for future development of the competition and of the activity recognition field in general.

Abstract

When a great variety of services become available to user through the broadband convergence network in the ubiquitous home environment, an intelligent agent is required to deal with the complexity of services and perceive intension of a user. Different from the old-fashioned command-based user interface for selecting services, conversation enables flexible and rich interactions between human and agents, but diverse expressions of the user`s background and context make conversation hard to implement by using either user-initiative or system-initiative methods. To deal with the ambiguity of diverse expressions between user and agents, we have to apply hierarchial bayesian networks for the mixed initiative conversation. Missing information from user`s query is analyzed by hierarchial bayesian networks to inference the user`s intension so that can be collected through the agent`s query. We have implemented this approach in ubiquitous home environment by implementing simulation program.

Abstract

Increasingly, we use mobile applications and services in our daily life activities, to support our needs for information, communication or leisure. However, user acceptance of a mobile application depends on at least two conditions; the application’s perceived experience and the appropriateness of the application to the user’s context and needs. Yet, we have a weak understanding of a mobile user’s Quality of Experience (QoE) and the factors influencing it. This paper presents 4 week long, 29 Android phone users study, where we collected both QoE and underlying network’s Quality of Service (QoS) measures through a combination of user, application and network data on the user’s phones. We aimed to derive and improve the understanding of users’ QoE for a set of widely used mobile applications in users’ natural environments and different daily context. We present data acquired in the study and discuss implications for mobile applications design.

Abstract

Mobile applications and services increasingly assist us in our daily life situations, fulfilling our needs for information, communication, entertainment or leisure. However, user acceptance of a mobile application depends on at least two conditions; the application’s perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) and the appropriateness of the application to the user’s situation and context. Yet, there is generally a weak understanding of a mobile user’s QoE and the factors influencing it. The mobile user’s experience is related to the Quality of Service (QoS) provided by the underlying service and network infrastructures, which provides a starting point for our work. We present “work- in-progress” results from an ongoing study of Android phone users. In this study, we aim to derive and improve understanding of their QoE in different situations and daily life environments. In particular, we evaluate the user’s qualitative QoE for a set of widely used mobile applications in the users’ natural environments and different contexts, and we analyze this experience and its relation to the underlying quantitative QoS. In our approach we collect both QoE and QoS measures through a combination of user, application and network input from mobile phones. We present initial data acquired in the study and derived from that, a set of preliminary implications for mobile applications design.

36. A novel evolutionary approach to image enhancement filter design: method and applications.

Abstract

Image enhancement is an important issue in digital image processing. Various approaches have been developed to solve image enhancement problems, but most of them require deep expert knowledge to design appropriate image filters. To automatically design a filter, we propose a novel approach based on the genetic algorithm that optimizes a set of standard filters by determining their types and order. Moreover, the proposed method is able to manage various types of noise factors. We applied the proposed method to local and global image enhancement problems such as impulsive noise reduction, interpolation, and orientation enhancement. In terms of subjective and objective evaluations, the results show the superiority of the proposed method.
