Two replicate, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, Phase III trials were performed as part of a comprehensive clinical program to investigate the long-term safety and efficacy of olodaterol in patients with moderate to very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) receiving usual-care background therapy. Methods: Patients received olodaterol 5 µg or 10 µg or placebo once daily for 48 weeks. Coprimary end points were forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) area under the curve from 0 to 3 hours (AUC0–3) response (change from baseline), and trough FEV1 response at 12 weeks. Secondary end points included additional lung function assessments, use of rescue medications, FEV1 AUC response from 0 to 12 hours, and Patient Global Rating over 48 weeks. Results: Overall, 624 and 642 patients were evaluated in studies 1222.11 and 1222.12, respectively. In both studies, olodaterol 5 µg and 10 µg significantly improved the FEV1 AUC0–3 response (P<0.0001) and trough FEV1 (study 1222.11, P<0.0001; study 1222.12, P<0.05, post hoc) at week 12, with an incidence of adverse events comparable with that of placebo. Secondary end points supported the efficacy of olodaterol. Conclusion: These studies demonstrate the long-term efficacy and safety of once-daily olodaterol 5 µg and 10 µg in patients with moderate to very severe CO

Computer Algebra Systems (CAS) have been changing the mathematics instruction requirements for many years. Since the tendency of using CAS in mathematics instruction has been rising for decades and reports have often been positive, the implementation of notebook classes seems to be the consequent next step of mathematics instruction supported by computers. Experiences that have been made with the use of CAS in PC-rooms can be transformed directly into the classroom. Hence the use of CAS is no longer limited to certain rooms. The permanent availability of the notebook with installed CAS offers the chance to realize these concepts that have already been approved with the use of CAS so far. The following speech shall show what these concepts could look like and that the use of notebooks is not only the further development of teaching in PC-classes. Examples from personal experience in teaching will especially show meanders and thought-provoking impulses in order to support teachers finding their way into teaching mathematics instruction in notebook classes successfully. Please allow me to point out two things in the beginning: (1) Yes, I am a vehement supporter of the use of notebooks (and the use of CAS in particular) in mathematics instruction. (2) No, I do not believe that teachers who have chosen another path (or at least partly) are teaching badly.

Trucks at idle have very low fuel economy and create high levels of exhaust emission. Also while on highway the main engine has to supply the power to all accessories. This is particularly important in the case of the military trucks that have a very high accessory power demand. One of the solutions to these issues is to provide a power source independent of the main engine, the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). The APU could operate when the vehicle is parked with the main engine shut off, or work on demand while driving to provide electricity to support any utility or recreational or operational needs (refrigerator, air conditioning, TV, communication, detection etc.). This paper offers the insight on development of an APU powered by a new, high power density two stroke engine. The device comprises a unique Opposed Piston and Opposed Cylinder (opoc(trademark)) engine and a high speed rotary generator. Extensive investigation has been conducted during the engine development program to create a special uni-flow scavenging process for this two stroke engine. As the result, it realizes zero fresh charge loss with high scavenging efficiency. This paper describes the technical challenges and solutions for achieving the engine design targets and the resulting APU.
