We present a novel isogeometric discretization approach for the Kirchhoff-Love shell formulation based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. For mitigating membrane locking, we discretize the independent strains with spline basis functions that are one degree lower than those used for the displacements. To enable computationally efficient condensation of the independent strains, we first discretize the variations of the independent strains with approximate dual splines to obtain a projection matrix that is close to a diagonal matrix. We then diagonalize this strain projection matrix via row-sum lumping. The combination of approximate dual test functions with row-sum lumping enables the direct condensation of the independent strain fields at the quadrature point level, while maintaining higher-order accuracy at optimal rates of convergence. We illustrate the numerical properties and the performance of our approach through numerical benchmarks, including a curved Euler-Bernoulli beam and the examples of the shell obstacle course.

The macro-element variant of the hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method combines advantages of continuous and discontinuous finite element discretization. In this paper, we investigate the performance of the macro-element HDG method for the analysis of compressible flow problems at moderate Reynolds numbers. To efficiently handle the corresponding large systems of equations, we explore several strategies at the solver level. On the one hand, we devise a second-layer static condensation approach that reduces the size of the local system matrix in each macro-element and hence the factorization time of the local solver. On the other hand, we employ a multi-level preconditioner based on the FGMRES solver for the global system that integrates well within a matrix-free implementation. In addition, we integrate a standard diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta scheme for time integration. We test the matrix-free macro-element HDG method for compressible flow benchmarks, including Couette flow, flow past a sphere, and the Taylor-Green vortex. Our results show that unlike standard HDG, the macro-element HDG method can operate efficiently for moderate polynomial degrees, as the local computational load can be flexibly increased via mesh refinement within a macro-element. Our results also show that due to the balance of local and global operations, the reduction in degrees of freedom, and the reduction of the global problem size and the number of iterations for its solution, the macro-element HDG method can be a competitive option for the analysis of compressible flow problems.

This study explores the integration of the hyper-power sequence, a method commonly employed for approximating the Moore-Penrose inverse, to enhance the effectiveness of an existing preconditioner. The approach is closely related to polynomial preconditioning based on Neumann series. We commence with a state-of-the-art matrix-free preconditioner designed for the saddle point system derived from isogeometric structure-preserving discretization of the Stokes equations. Our results demonstrate that incorporating multiple iterations of the hyper-power method enhances the effectiveness of the preconditioner, leading to a substantial reduction in both iteration counts and overall solution time for simulating Stokes flow within a 3D lid-driven cavity. Through a comprehensive analysis, we assess the stability, accuracy, and numerical cost associated with the proposed scheme.

This paper introduces a mathematical framework for explicit structural dynamics, employing approximate dual functionals and rowsum mass lumping. We demonstrate that the approach may be interpreted as a Petrov-Galerkin method that utilizes rowsum mass lumping or as a Galerkin method with a customized higher-order accurate mass matrix. Unlike prior work, our method correctly incorporates Dirichlet boundary conditions while preserving higher order accuracy. The mathematical analysis is substantiated by spectral analysis and a two-dimensional linear benchmark that involves a non-linear geometric mapping. Our results reveal that our approach achieves accuracy and robustness comparable to a traditional Galerkin method employing the consistent mass formulation, while retaining the explicit nature of the lumped mass formulation.

In this paper, we present a discrete formulation of nonlinear shear- and torsion-free rods introduced by Gebhardt and Romero in [20] that uses isogeometric discretization and robust time integration. Omitting the director as an independent variable field, we reduce the number of degrees of freedom and obtain discrete solutions in multiple copies of the Euclidean space (R^3), which is larger than the corresponding multiple copies of the manifold (R^3 x S^2) obtained with standard Hermite finite elements. For implicit time integration, we choose the same integration scheme as Gebhardt and Romero in [20] that is a hybrid form of the midpoint and the trapezoidal rules. In addition, we apply a recently introduced approach for outlier removal by Hiemstra et al. [26] that reduces high-frequency content in the response without affecting the accuracy, ensuring robustness of our nonlinear discrete formulation. We illustrate the efficiency of our nonlinear discrete formulation for static and transient rods under different loading conditions, demonstrating good accuracy in space, time and the frequency domain. Our numerical example coincides with a relevant application case, the simulation of mooring lines.

Combining sum factorization, weighted quadrature, and row-based assembly enables efficient higher-order computations for tensor product splines. We aim to transfer these concepts to immersed boundary methods, which perform simulations on a regular background mesh cut by a boundary representation that defines the domain of interest. Therefore, we present a novel concept to divide the support of cut basis functions to obtain regular parts suited for sum factorization. These regions require special discontinuous weighted quadrature rules, while Gauss-like quadrature rules integrate the remaining support. Two linear elasticity benchmark problems confirm the derived estimate for the computational costs of the different integration routines and their combination. Although the presence of cut elements reduces the speed-up, its contribution to the overall computation time declines with h-refinement.

Membrane locking in finite element approximations of thin beams and shells has remained an unresolved topic despite four decades of research. In this article, we utilize Fourier analysis of the complete spectrum of natural vibrations and propose a criterion to identify and evaluate the severity of membrane locking. To demonstrate our approach, we utilize standard and mixed Galerkin formulations applied to a circular Euler-Bernoulli ring discretized using uniform, periodic B-splines. By analytically computing the discrete Fourier operators, we obtain an exact representation of the normalized error across the entire spectrum of eigenvalues. Our investigation addresses key questions related to membrane locking, including mode susceptibility, the influence of polynomial order, and the impact of shell/beam thickness and radius of curvature. Furthermore, we compare the effectiveness of mixed and standard Galerkin methods in mitigating locking. By providing insights into the parameters affecting locking and introducing a criterion to evaluate its severity, this research contributes to the development of improved numerical methods for thin beams and shells.

We present a mass lumping approach based on an isogeometric Petrov-Galerkin method that preserves higher-order spatial accuracy in explicit dynamics calculations irrespective of the polynomial degree of the spline approximation. To discretize the test function space, our method uses an approximate dual basis, whose functions are smooth, have local support and satisfy approximate bi-orthogonality with respect to a trial space of B-splines. The resulting mass matrix is ``close'' to the identity matrix. Specifically, a lumped version of this mass matrix preserves all relevant polynomials when utilized in a Galerkin projection. Consequently, the mass matrix can be lumped (via row-sum lumping) without compromising spatial accuracy in explicit dynamics calculations. We address the imposition of Dirichlet boundary conditions and the preservation of approximate bi-orthogonality under geometric mappings. In addition, we establish a link between the exact dual and approximate dual basis functions via an iterative algorithm that improves the approximate dual basis towards exact bi-orthogonality. We demonstrate the performance of our higher-order accurate mass lumping approach via convergence studies and spectral analyses of discretized beam, plate and shell models.

We investigate a macro-element variant of the hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method, using patches of standard simplicial elements that can have non-matching interfaces. Coupled via the HDG technique, our method enables local refinement by uniform simplicial subdivision of each macro-element. By enforcing one spatial discretization for all macro-elements, we arrive at local problems per macro-element that are embarrassingly parallel, yet well balanced. Therefore, our macro-element variant scales efficiently to n-node clusters and can be tailored to available hardware by adjusting the local problem size to the capacity of a single node, while still using moderate polynomial orders such as quadratics or cubics. Increasing the local problem size means simultaneously decreasing, in relative terms, the global problem size, hence effectively limiting the proliferation of degrees of freedom. The global problem is solved via a matrix-free iterative technique that also heavily relies on macro-element local operations. We investigate and discuss the advantages and limitations of the macro-element HDG method via an advection-diffusion model problem.

In this paper, we propose a variationally consistent technique for decreasing the maximum eigenfrequencies of structural dynamics related finite element formulations. Our approach is based on adding a symmetric positive-definite term to the mass matrix that follows from the integral of the traction jump across element boundaries. The added term is weighted by a small factor, for which we derive a suitable, and simple, element-local parameter choice. For linear problems, we show that our mass-scaling method produces no adverse effects in terms of spatial accuracy and orders of convergence. We illustrate these properties in one, two and three spatial dimension, for quadrilateral elements and triangular elements, and for up to fourth order polynomials basis functions. To extend the method to non-linear problems, we introduce a linear approximation and show that a sizeable increase in critical time-step size can be achieved while only causing minor (even beneficial) influences on the dynamic response.

A key advantage of isogeometric discretizations is their accurate and well-behaved eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes. For degree two and higher, however, optical branches of spurious outlier frequencies and modes may appear due to boundaries or reduced continuity at patch interfaces. In this paper, we introduce a variational approach based on perturbed eigenvalue analysis that eliminates outlier frequencies without negatively affecting the accuracy in the remainder of the spectrum and modes. We then propose a pragmatic iterative procedure that estimates the perturbation parameters in such a way that the outlier frequencies are effectively reduced. We demonstrate that our approach allows for a much larger critical time-step size in explicit dynamics calculations. In addition, we show that the critical time-step size obtained with the proposed approach does not depend on the polynomial degree of spline basis functions.

A unified mobile search framework aims to identify the mobile apps that can satisfy a user's information need and route the user's query to them. Previous work has shown that resource descriptions for mobile apps are sparse as they rely on the app's previous queries. This problem puts certain apps in dominance and leaves out the resource-scarce apps from the top ranks. In this case, we need a ranker that goes beyond simple lexical matching. Therefore, our goal is to study the extent of a BERT-based ranker's ability to improve the quality and diversity of app selection. To this end, we compare the results of the BERT-based ranker with other information retrieval models, focusing on the analysis of selected apps diversification. Our analysis shows that the BERT-based ranker selects more diverse apps while improving the quality of baseline results by selecting the relevant apps such as Facebook and Contacts for more personal queries and decreasing the bias towards the dominant resources such as the Google Search app.

In this paper, we take a fresh look at using spectral analysis for assessing locking phenomena in finite element formulations. We propose to "measure" locking by comparing the difference between eigenvalue and mode error curves computed on coarse meshes with "asymptotic" error curves computed on "overkill" meshes, both plotted with respect to the normalized mode number. To demonstrate the intimate relation between membrane locking and spectral accuracy, we focus on the example of a circular ring discretized with isogeometric curved Euler-Bernoulli beam elements. We show that the transverse-displacement-dominating modes are locking-prone, while the circumferential-displacement-dominating modes are naturally locking-free. We use eigenvalue and mode errors to assess five isogeometric finite element formulations in terms of their locking-related efficiency: the displacement-based formulation with full and reduced integration and three locking-free formulations based on the B-bar, discrete strain gap and Hellinger-Reissner methods. Our study shows that spectral analysis uncovers locking-related effects across the spectrum of eigenvalues and eigenmodes, rigorously characterizing membrane locking in the displacement-based formulation and unlocking in the locking-free formulations.

Numerical computation of the Karhunen--Lo\`eve expansion is computationally challenging in terms of both memory requirements and computing time. We compare two state-of-the-art methods that claim to efficiently solve for the K--L expansion: (1) the matrix-free isogeometric Galerkin method using interpolation based quadrature proposed by the authors in [1] and (2) our new matrix-free implementation of the isogeometric collocation method proposed in [2]. Two three-dimensional benchmark problems indicate that the Galerkin method performs significantly better for smooth covariance kernels, while the collocation method performs slightly better for rough covariance kernels.

Quadrilateral layouts on surfaces are valuable in texture mapping, and essential in generation of quadrilateral meshes and in fitting splines. Previous work has characterized such layouts as a special metric on a surface or as a meromorphic quartic differential with finite trajectories. In this work, a surface quadrilateral layout is alternatively characterized as a special immersion of a cut representation of the surface into the Euclidean plane. We call this a quad layout immersion. This characterization, while posed in smooth topology, naturally generalizes to piecewise-linear representations. As such, it mathematically describes and generalizes integer grid maps, which are common in computer graphics settings. The Karhunen-Lo\`eve series expansion (KLE) decomposes a stochastic process into an infinite series of pairwise uncorrelated random variables and pairwise $L^2$-orthogonal functions. For any given truncation order of the infinite series the basis is optimal in the sense that the total mean squared error is minimized. The orthogonal basis functions are determined as the solution of an eigenvalue problem corresponding to the homogeneous Fredholm integral equation of the second kind, which is computationally challenging for several reasons. Firstly, a Galerkin discretization requires numerical integration over a $2d$ dimensional domain, where $d$, in this work, denotes the spatial dimension. Secondly, the main system matrix of the discretized weak-form is dense. Consequently, the computational complexity of classical finite element formation and assembly procedures as well as the memory requirements of direct solution techniques become quickly computationally intractable with increasing polynomial degree, number of elements and degrees of freedom. The objective of this work is to significantly reduce several of the computational bottlenecks associated with numerical solution of the KLE. We present a matrix-free solution strategy, which is embarrassingly parallel and scales favorably with problem size and polynomial degree. Our approach is based on (1) an interpolation based quadrature that minimizes the required number of quadrature points; (2) an inexpensive reformulation of the generalized eigenvalue problem into a standard eigenvalue problem; and (3) a matrix-free and parallel matrix-vector product for iterative eigenvalue solvers. Two higher-order three-dimensional benchmarks illustrate exceptional computational performance combined with high accuracy and robustness.

We explore how to generate effective queries based on search tasks. Our approach has three main steps: 1) identify search tasks based on research goals, 2) manually classify search queries according to those tasks, and 3) compare three methods to improve search rankings based on the task context. The most promising approach is based on expanding the user's query terms using task terms, which slightly improved the NDCG@20 scores over a BM25 baseline. Query autocompletions help users of search engines to speed up their searches by recommending completions of partially typed queries in a drop down box. These recommended query autocompletions are usually based on large logs of queries that were previously entered by the search engine's users. Therefore, misinformation entered -- either accidentally or purposely to manipulate the search engine -- might end up in the search engine's recommendations, potentially harming organizations, individuals, and groups of people. This paper proposes an alternative approach for generating query autocompletions by extracting anchor texts from a large web crawl, without the need to use query logs.
