Various ceramic supports besides standard soda-lime glass have been utilized as substrates for deposition of molybdenum and copper indium diselenide layers (substrate/Mo/CuInSe2 heterostructures) for application in thin film photovoltaic solar cells. Molybdenum layers have been prepared simultaneously onto the different substrates by electron gun assisted evaporation. Subsequently, CuInSe2 thin films have been obtained by direct electrodeposition onto the Mo-coated substrates. The influence of the substrate characteristics onto the optical and structural properties of the developed materials has been determined to evaluate the possibility of substituting the commonly utilized glass by ceramics that can wide the applications of these photovoltaic systems. The obtained results indicate that the scattering factor and the structural stress in the layers are minimized when the morphological characteristics of the ceramic are close to those of the standard glass substrates.

Some results are presented about the preparation of CuInS2 / buffer interfaces by chemical bath deposition. This type of interface has an interest for solar energy conversion by thin- film solar cells. It is shown that the deposition of buffer films with ZnSe composition onto CuInS2 is due to a combined electroless and chemical reaction process. Characterization of the CuInS2 / ZnSe structure is carried out with X-ray diffraction and microscope techniques (AFM, SEM). Solar cells of CuInS2 / ZnSe / ZnO type are characterized as a function of buffer layer deposition process.

The optimization of the structural and morphological characteristics of the system constituted by molibdenum and copper indium diselenide layers deposited onto glass substrates (glass/Mo/CuInSe2) is essential for its application in efficient thin film solar cells. For developing such kind of systems, soda-lime glass substrates have been used to prepare Mo thin films by evaporation at deposition rates between 4 and 13 Å/s, and subsequently CuInSe2 layers by direct electrodeposition at 12 Å/s constant rate. The structural and morphological analysis of the samples indicated that the surface roughness of the CuInSe2 layer is minimized, and its grain size is maximized, when electrodeposition process takes place onto Mo thin films evaporated at rates higher than 8 Å/s.La optimización de las características estructurales y morfológicas del sistema formado por películas de molibdeno y seleniuro de cobre e indio depositadas sobre sustratos de vidrio (vidrio/Mo/CuInSe2) resulta esencial para su aplicación en la formación de células solares de lámina delgada eficientes.

Our objective was to introduce and psychometrically validate a short and effective affective dependency scale, the Affective Dependence Scale (ADS-9).Methods: We used a sample of 762 participants (clinical: emotional dependent subjects n = 212, comparison: non-emotionally-dependent addicted subjects n = 272, and general population n = 278) to assess the factor structure, the psychological construct validity and the measurement invariance for the ADS-9 by means of independent exploratory factor analyses for each sample group and subsequent multigroup confirmatory factor analyses. Results: Our results confirm that ADS-9 is a psychometrically consistent instrument, with construct and clinical validity, as well as configural, metric and scalar invariance across different sample groups (clinical, comparison and general population). A hypothesized two-dimensional structure was confirmed by means of factor analyses. Both sub-scales of this abbreviated form, Submission and Craving, showed a good agreement with the previously validated Relationships and Sentimental Dependencies Inventory (IRIDS-100).Conclusion: The ADS-9 is a brief instrument that appears to reliably detect the dependent and pathological components of affective dependence. It consists of two sub-scales, describing Submission (adaptation, accommodation, and subjugation) and Craving (imperative need for the other with the presence of disturbing states). We suggest that it is a versatile scale that may be useful for clinicians and researchers. Keywords: emotional dependence, love addiction, craving, romantic love, psychological test, submission

- Abstract
The introduction of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer grading system has furthered interest in histopathological grading for risk stratification in lung adenocarcinoma. Complex morphology and high intratumoral heterogeneity present challenges to pathologists, prompting the development of artificial intelligence (AI) methods. Here we developed ANORAK (pyrAmid pooliNg crOss stReam Attention networK), encoding multiresolution inputs with an attention mechanism, to delineate growth patterns from hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides. In 1,372 lung adenocarcinomas across four independent cohorts, AI-based grading was prognostic of disease-free survival, and further assisted pathologists by consistently improving prognostication in stage I tumors. Tumors with discrepant patterns between AI and pathologists had notably higher intratumoral heterogeneity. Furthermore, ANORAK facilitates the morphological and spatial assessment of the acinar pattern, capturing acinus variations with pattern transition. Collectively, our AI method enabled the precision quantification and morphology investigation of growth patterns, reflecting intratumoral histological transitions in lung adenocarcinoma.

Graphene is a very attractive material for nanomechanical devices and membrane applications. Graphene blisters based on silicon oxide micro-cavities are a simple but relevant example of nanoactuators. A drawback of this experimental set up is that gas leakage through the graphene-SiO2 interface contributes significantly to the total leak rate. Here we study the diffusion of air from pressurized graphene drumheads on SiO2 micro-cavities and propose a straightforward method to improve the already strong adhesion between graphene and the underlying SiO2 substrate, resulting in reduced leak rates. This is carried out by applying controlled and localized ultrahigh pressure (> 10 GPa) with an Atomic Force Microscopy diamond tip. With this procedure, we are able to significantly approach the graphene layer to the SiO2 surface around the drumheads, thus enhancing the interaction between them allowing us to better seal the graphene-SiO2 interface, which is reflected in up to ~ 4 times lower leakage rates. Our work opens an easy way to improve the performance of graphene as a gas membrane on a technological relevant substrate such as SiO2., Comment: pages 19, 4 figures + supplementary information

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Contrary to most materials, graphene exhibits a negative thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), i.e it contracts when heated. This contraction is due to the thermal excitation of low energy out-of-plane vibration modes. These flexural modes have been reported to govern the electronic transport and the mechanical response of suspended graphene. In this work, we systematically investigate the influence of defects in the TEC of suspended graphene membranes. Controlled introduction of low densities of mono-vacancies reduces the graphene TEC, up to one order of magnitude for a defect density of $5\times10^{12}$~cm$^{-2}$ . Our molecular dynamics simulations reproduce the observed trend and show that TEC reduction is due to the suppression of out-of-plane fluctuations caused by the strain fields created by mono-vacancies in their surrounding areas. These results highlight the key role of defects in the properties of "real-life" graphene, and pave the way for future proposals of electronic and mechanical defect engineering., Comment: 19

- Abstract
Cancer-associated cachexia (CAC) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in individuals with non-small cell lung cancer. Key features of CAC include alterations in body composition and body weight. Here, we explore the association between body composition and body weight with survival and delineate potential biological processes and mediators that contribute to the development of CAC. Computed tomography-based body composition analysis of 651 individuals in the TRACERx (TRAcking non-small cell lung Cancer Evolution through therapy (Rx)) study suggested that individuals in the bottom 20th percentile of the distribution of skeletal muscle or adipose tissue area at the time of lung cancer diagnosis, had significantly shorter lung cancer-specific survival and overall survival. This finding was validated in 420 individuals in the independent Boston Lung Cancer Study. Individuals classified as having developed CAC according to one or more features at relapse encompassing loss of adipose or muscle tissue, or body mass index-adjusted weight loss were found to have distinct tumor genomic and transcriptomic profiles compared with individuals who did not develop such features. Primary non-small cell lung cancers from individuals who developed CAC were characterized by enrichment of inflammatory signaling and epithelial–mesenchymal transitional pathways, and differentially expressed genes upregulated in these tumors included cancer-testis antigen MAGEA6 and matrix metalloproteinases, such as ADAMTS3. In an exploratory proteomic analysis of circulating putative mediators of cachexia performed in a subset of 110 individuals from TRACERx, a significant association between circulating GDF15 and loss of body weight, skeletal muscle and adipose tissue was identified at relapse, supporting the potential therapeutic relevance of targeting GDF15 in the management of CAC.

- Abstract
Lung adenocarcinomas (LUADs) display a broad histological spectrum from low-grade lepidic tumors through to mid-grade acinar and papillary and high-grade solid, cribriform and micropapillary tumors. How morphology reflects tumor evolution and disease progression is poorly understood. Whole-exome sequencing data generated from 805 primary tumor regions and 121 paired metastatic samples across 248 LUADs from the TRACERx 421 cohort, together with RNA-sequencing data from 463 primary tumor regions, were integrated with detailed whole-tumor and regional histopathological analysis. Tumors with predominantly high-grade patterns showed increased chromosomal complexity, with higher burden of loss of heterozygosity and subclonal somatic copy number alterations. Individual regions in predominantly high-grade pattern tumors exhibited higher proliferation and lower clonal diversity, potentially reflecting large recent subclonal expansions. Co-occurrence of truncal loss of chromosomes 3p and 3q was enriched in predominantly low-/mid-grade tumors, while purely undifferentiated solid-pattern tumors had a higher frequency of truncal arm or focal 3q gains and SMARCA4 gene alterations compared with mixed-pattern tumors with a solid component, suggesting distinct evolutionary trajectories. Clonal evolution analysis revealed that tumors tend to evolve toward higher-grade patterns. The presence of micropapillary pattern and ‘tumor spread through air spaces’ were associated with intrathoracic recurrence, in contrast to the presence of solid/cribriform patterns, necrosis and preoperative circulating tumor DNA detection, which were associated with extra-thoracic recurrence. These data provide insights into the relationship between LUAD morphology, the underlying evolutionary genomic landscape, and clinical and anatomical relapse risk.

- Abstract
Intratumour heterogeneity (ITH) fuels lung cancer evolution, which leads to immune evasion and resistance to therapy1. Here, using paired whole-exome and RNA sequencing data, we investigate intratumour transcriptomic diversity in 354 non-small cell lung cancer tumours from 347 out of the first 421 patients prospectively recruited into the TRACERx study2,3. Analyses of 947 tumour regions, representing both primary and metastatic disease, alongside 96 tumour-adjacent normal tissue samples implicate the transcriptome as a major source of phenotypic variation. Gene expression levels and ITH relate to patterns of positive and negative selection during tumour evolution. We observe frequent copy number-independent allele-specific expression that is linked to epigenomic dysfunction. Allele-specific expression can also result in genomic–transcriptomic parallel evolution, which converges on cancer gene disruption. We extract signatures of RNA single-base substitutions and link their aetiology to the activity of the RNA-editing enzymes ADAR and APOBEC3A, thereby revealing otherwise undetected ongoing APOBEC activity in tumours. Characterizing the transcriptomes of primary–metastatic tumour pairs, we combine multiple machine-learning approaches that leverage genomic and transcriptomic variables to link metastasis-seeding potential to the evolutionary context of mutations and increased proliferation within primary tumour regions. These results highlight the interplay between the genome and transcriptome in influencing ITH, lung cancer evolution and metastasis.

- Abstract
Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) can be used to detect and profile residual tumour cells persisting after curative intent therapy1. The study of large patient cohorts incorporating longitudinal plasma sampling and extended follow-up is required to determine the role of ctDNA as a phylogenetic biomarker of relapse in early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here we developed ctDNA methods tracking a median of 200 mutations identified in resected NSCLC tissue across 1,069 plasma samples collected from 197 patients enrolled in the TRACERx study2. A lack of preoperative ctDNA detection distinguished biologically indolent lung adenocarcinoma with good clinical outcome. Postoperative plasma analyses were interpreted within the context of standard-of-care radiological surveillance and administration of cytotoxic adjuvant therapy. Landmark analyses of plasma samples collected within 120 days after surgery revealed ctDNA detection in 25% of patients, including 49% of all patients who experienced clinical relapse; 3 to 6 monthly ctDNA surveillance identified impending disease relapse in an additional 20% of landmark-negative patients. We developed a bioinformatic tool (ECLIPSE) for non-invasive tracking of subclonal architecture at low ctDNA levels. ECLIPSE identified patients with polyclonal metastatic dissemination, which was associated with a poor clinical outcome. By measuring subclone cancer cell fractions in preoperative plasma, we found that subclones seeding future metastases were significantly more expanded compared with non-metastatic subclones. Our findings will support (neo)adjuvant trial advances and provide insights into the process of metastatic dissemination using low-ctDNA-level liquid biopsy.

- Abstract
B cells are frequently found in the margins of solid tumours as organized follicles in ectopic lymphoid organs called tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS)1,2. Although TLS have been found to correlate with improved patient survival and response to immune checkpoint blockade (ICB), the underlying mechanisms of this association remain elusive1,2. Here we investigate lung-resident B cell responses in patients from the TRACERx 421 (Tracking Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer Evolution Through Therapy) and other lung cancer cohorts, and in a recently established immunogenic mouse model for lung adenocarcinoma3. We find that both human and mouse lung adenocarcinomas elicit local germinal centre responses and tumour-binding antibodies, and further identify endogenous retrovirus (ERV) envelope glycoproteins as a dominant anti-tumour antibody target. ERV-targeting B cell responses are amplified by ICB in both humans and mice, and by targeted inhibition of KRAS(G12C) in the mouse model. ERV-reactive antibodies exert anti-tumour activity that extends survival in the mouse model, and ERV expression predicts the outcome of ICB in human lung adenocarcinoma. Finally, we find that effective immunotherapy in the mouse model requires CXCL13-dependent TLS formation. Conversely, therapeutic CXCL13 treatment potentiates anti-tumour immunity and synergizes with ICB. Our findings provide a possible mechanistic basis for the association of TLS with immunotherapy response.

- Abstract
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated mortality worldwide1. Here we analysed 1,644 tumour regions sampled at surgery or during follow-up from the first 421 patients with non-small cell lung cancer prospectively enrolled into the TRACERx study. This project aims to decipher lung cancer evolution and address the primary study endpoint: determining the relationship between intratumour heterogeneity and clinical outcome. In lung adenocarcinoma, mutations in 22 out of 40 common cancer genes were under significant subclonal selection, including classical tumour initiators such as TP53 and KRAS. We defined evolutionary dependencies between drivers, mutational processes and whole genome doubling (WGD) events. Despite patients having a history of smoking, 8% of lung adenocarcinomas lacked evidence of tobacco-induced mutagenesis. These tumours also had similar detection rates for EGFR mutations and for RET, ROS1, ALK and MET oncogenic isoforms compared with tumours in never-smokers, which suggests that they have a similar aetiology and pathogenesis. Large subclonal expansions were associated with positive subclonal selection. Patients with tumours harbouring recent subclonal expansions, on the terminus of a phylogenetic branch, had significantly shorter disease-free survival. Subclonal WGD was detected in 19% of tumours, and 10% of tumours harboured multiple subclonal WGDs in parallel. Subclonal, but not truncal, WGD was associated with shorter disease-free survival. Copy number heterogeneity was associated with extrathoracic relapse within 1 year after surgery. These data demonstrate the importance of clonal expansion, WGD and copy number instability in determining the timing and patterns of relapse in non-small cell lung cancer and provide a comprehensive clinical cancer evolutionary data resource.

We study the properties of graphene wormholes in which a short nanotube acts as a bridge between two graphene sheets, where the honeycomb carbon lattice is curved from the presence of 12 heptagonal defects. By taking the nanotube bridge with very small length compared to the radius, we develop an effective theory of Dirac fermions to account for the low-energy electronic properties of the wormholes in the continuum limit, where the frustration induced by the heptagonal defects is mimicked by a line of fictitious gauge flux attached to each of them. We find in particular that, when the effective gauge flux from the topological defects becomes maximal, the zero-energy modes of the Dirac equation can be arranged into two triplets, that can be thought as the counterpart of the two triplets of zero modes that arise in the dual instance of the continuum limit of large spherical fullerenes. We further investigate the graphene wormhole spectra by performing a numerical diagonalization of tight-binding hamiltonians for very large lattices realizing the wormhole geometry. The correspondence between the number of localized electronic states observed in the numerical approach and the effective gauge flux predicted in the continuum limit shows that graphene wormholes can be consistently described by an effective theory of two Dirac fermion fields in the curved geometry of the wormhole, opening the possibility of using real samples of the carbon material as a playground to experiment with the interaction between the background curvature and the Dirac fields., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

We study the electronic structure of the junctions between a single graphene layer and carbon nanotubes, using a tight-binding model and the continuum theory based on Dirac fermion fields. The latter provides a unified description of different lattice structures with curvature, which is always localized at six heptagonal carbon rings around each junction. When these are evenly spaced, we find that it is possible to curve the planar lattice into armchair (6n,6n) as well as zig-zag (6n,0) nanotubes. We show that the junctions fall into two different classes, regarding the low-energy electronic behavior. One of them, constituted by the junctions made of the armchair nanotubes and the zig-zag (6n,0) geometries when n is a multiple of 3, is characterized by the presence of two quasi-bound states at the Fermi level, which are absent for the rest of the zig-zag nanotubes. These states, localized at the junction, are shown to arise from the effective gauge flux induced by the heptagonal carbon rings, which has a direct reflection in the local density of states around the junction. Furthermore, we also analyze the band structure of the arrays of junctions, finding out that they can also be classified into two different groups according to the low-energy behavior. In this regard, the arrays made of armchair and (6n,0) nanotubes with n equal to a multiple of 3 are characterized by the presence of a series of flat bands, whose number grows with the length of the nanotubes. We show that such flat bands have their origin in the formation of states confined to the nanotubes in the array. This is explained in the continuum theory from the possibility of forming standing waves in the mentioned nanotube geometries, as a superposition of modes with opposite momenta and the same quantum numbers under the C_6v symmetry of the junction., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Carbon nanotubes are a good realization of one-dimensional crystals where basic science and potential nanodevice applications merge. Defects are known to modify the electrical resistance of carbon nanotubes. They can be present in as-grown carbon nanotubes, but controlling externally their density opens a path towards the tuning of the nanotube electronic characteristics. In this work consecutive Ar+ irradiation doses are applied to single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) producing a uniform density of defects. After each dose, the room temperature resistance versus SWNT-length [R(L)] along the nanotube is measured. Our data show an exponential dependence of R(L) indicating that the system is within the strong Anderson localization regime. Theoretical simulations demonstrate that mainly di-vacancies contribute to the resistance increase induced by irradiation and that just a 0.03% of di-vacancies produces an increase of three orders of magnitude in the resistance of a 400 nm SWNT length., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The adsorption of C60 on Si(111) has been studied by means of first-principles density functional calculations. A 2x2 adatom surface reconstruction was used to simulate the terraces of the 7x7 reconstruction. The structure of several possible adsorption configurations was optimized using the ab initio atomic forces, finding good candidates for two different adsorption states observed experimentally. While the C60 molecule remains closely spherical, the silicon substrate appears quite soft, especially the adatoms, which move substantially to form extra C-Si bonds, at the expense of breaking Si-Si bonds. The structural relaxation has a much larger effect on the adsorption energies, which strongly depend on the adsorption configuration, than on the charge transfer., Comment: 4 pages with 3 postscript figures, to appear in Surf. Astrophysics - Abstract
The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) is a new objective-prism survey for extragalactic emission-line objects. It combines many of the features of previous slitless spectroscopic surveys with the advantages of modern CCD detectors, and is the first purely digital objective-prism survey for emission-line galaxies. Here we present the first list of emission-line galaxy candidates selected from our red spectral data, which cover the spectral range 6400 to 7200 Angstroms. In most cases, the detected emission line is H-alpha. The current survey list covers a one-degree-wide strip located at Dec (1950) = 29.5 degrees and spanning the RA range 12h 15m to 17h 0m. An area of 62.2 sq. degrees is covered. A total of 1128 candidate emission-line objects have been selected for inclusion in the survey list (18.1 per sq. degree). We tabulate accurate coordinates and photometry for each source, as well as estimates of the redshift and emission-line flux and equivalent width based on measurements of the digital objective-prism spectra. The properties of the KISS emission-line galaxies are examined using the available observational data., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, A.J. in press. Astrophysics - Abstract
The KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS) is a new objective-prism survey for extragalactic emission-line objects. It combines many of the features of previous slitless spectroscopic surveys that were carried out with Schmidt telescopes using photographic plates with the advantages of modern CCD detectors. It is the first purely digital objective-prism survey, and extends previous photographic surveys to substantially fainter flux limits. In this, the first paper in the series, we give an overview of the survey technique, describe our data processing procedures, and present examples of the types of objects found by KISS. Our first H-alpha-selected survey list detects objects at the rate of 18.1 per square degree, which is 181 times higher than the surface density of the Markarian survey.Since the sample is line-selected, there is an imposed redshift limit of z ~ 0.095 due to the filter employed for the objective-prism observations. We evaluate the quality of the observed parameters derived from the survey data, which include accurate astrometry, photometry, redshifts, and line fluxes. Finally, we describe some of the many applications the KISS database will have for addressing specific questions in extragalactic astronomy. Subsequent papers in this series will present our survey lists of emission-line galaxy candidates., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, A.J. in press

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
Classical {\W}$_3$ transformations are discussed as restricted diffeomorphism transformations (\W-Diff) in two-dimensional space. We formulate them by using Riemannian geometry as a basic ingredient. The extended {\W}$_3$ generators are given as particular combinations of Christoffel symbols. The defining equations of \W-Diff are shown to depend on these generators explicitly. We also consider the issues of finite transformations, global $SL(3)$ transformations and \W-Schwarzians., Comment: 10 pages, UB-ECM-PF 94/20, TOHO-FP-9448, QMW-PH-94-25

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We introduce a particle mechanics model with Sp($2M$) gauge invariance. Different partial gauge-fixings by means of sl(2) embeddings on the gauge algebra lead to reduced models which are invariant under diffeomorphisms and classical non-linear \W-transformations as the residual gauge symmetries thus providing a set of models of gauge and matter fields coupled in a \W-invariant way. The equations of motion for the matter variables give Lax operators in a matrix form. We examine several examples in detail and discuss the issue of integration of infinitesimal \W-transformations., Comment: 34 pages, LaTeX, no figures.
