Abstract

This study conducts a quantitative distinguishability analysis using quasi-monostatic experimental radar data to find a topographic and backpropagated tomographic reconstruction for an analogue of asteroid Itokawa (25143). In particular, we consider a combination of travel-time and wavefield backpropagation tomography using the time-frequency representation (TFR) and principal component analysis (PCA) approaches as filtering techniques. Furthermore, we hypothesise that the travel time of the main peaks in the signal can be projected as a topographic imaging of the analogue asteroid while also presenting a tomographic reconstruction based on the main peaks in the signal. We compare the performance of several different filtering approaches covering several noise levels and two hypothetical interior structures: homogeneous and detailed. Our results suggest that wavefield information is vital for obtaining an appropriate reconstruction quality regardless of the noise level and that different filters affect the distinguishability under different assumptions of the noise. The results also suggest that the main peaks of the measured signal can be used to topographically distinguish the signatures in the measurements, hence the interior structure of the different analogue asteroids. Abstract

The main objective of this chapter is to present an overview of the different areas of key technologies that will be needed to fly the technically most challenging of the representative missions identified in chapter 4 (the Pillar 2 Horizon 2061 report). It starts with a description of the future scientific instruments which will address the key questions of Horizon 2061 described in chapter 3 (the Pillar 1 Horizon 2061 report) and the new technologies that the next generations of space instruments will require (section 2). From there, the chapter follows the line of logical development and implementation of a planetary mission: section 3 describes some of the novel mission architectures that will be needed and how they will articulate interplanetary spacecraft and science platforms; section 4 summarizes the system-level technologies needed: power, propulsion, navigation, communication, advanced autonomy on board planetary spacecraft; section 5 describes the diversity of specialized science platforms that will be needed to survive, operate and return scientific data from the extreme environments that future missions will target; section 6 describes the new technology developments that will be needed for long-duration missions and semi-permanent settlements; finally, section 7 attempts to anticipate on the disruptive technologies that should emerge and progressively prevail in the decades to come to meet the long-term needs of future planetary missions., Comment: 100 pages, 23 figures, Horizon 2061 is a science-driven, foresight exercise, for future scientific investigations

Abstract

NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is the first full-scale test of an asteroid deflection technology. Results from the hypervelocity kinetic impact and Earth-based observations, coupled with LICIACube and the later Hera mission, will result in measurement of the momentum transfer efficiency accurate to ~10% and characterization of the Didymos binary system. But DART is a single experiment; how could these results be used in a future planetary defense necessity involving a different asteroid? We examine what aspects of Dimorphos's response to kinetic impact will be constrained by DART results; how these constraints will help refine knowledge of the physical properties of asteroidal materials and predictive power of impact simulations; what information about a potential Earth impactor could be acquired before a deflection effort; and how design of a deflection mission should be informed by this understanding. We generalize the momentum enhancement factor $\beta$, showing that a particular direction-specific $\beta$ will be directly determined by the DART results, and that a related direction-specific $\beta$ is a figure of merit for a kinetic impact mission. The DART $\beta$ determination constrains the ejecta momentum vector, which, with hydrodynamic simulations, constrains the physical properties of Dimorphos's near-surface. In a hypothetical planetary defense exigency, extrapolating these constraints to a newly discovered asteroid will require Earth-based observations and benefit from in-situ reconnaissance. We show representative predictions for momentum transfer based on different levels of reconnaissance and discuss strategic targeting to optimize the deflection and reduce the risk of a counterproductive deflection in the wrong direction., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

We describe the AMBITION project, a mission to return the first-ever cryogenically-stored sample of a cometary nucleus, that has been proposed for the ESA Science Programme Voyage 2050. Comets are the leftover building blocks of giant planet cores and other planetary bodies, and fingerprints of Solar System’s formation processes. We summarise some of the most important questions still open in cometary science and Solar System formation after the successful Rosetta mission. We show that many of these scientific questions require sample analysis using techniques that are only possible in laboratories on Earth. We summarize measurements, instrumentation and mission scenarios that can address these questions. We emphasize the need for returning a sample collected at depth or, still more challenging, at cryogenic temperatures while preserving the stratigraphy of the comet nucleus surface layers. We provide requirements for the next generation of landers, for cryogenic sample acquisition and storage during the return to Earth. Rendezvous missions to the main belt comets and Centaurs, expanding our knowledge by exploring new classes of comets, are also discussed. The AMBITION project is discussed in the international context of comet and asteroid space exploration.

Abstract

For now, the Planetary Defense Conference Exercise 2021's incoming fictitious(!) asteroid, 2021 PDC, seems headed for impact on October 20th, 2021, exactly 6 months after its discovery. Today (Monday, April 26th, 2021), the impact probability is 5%, in a steep rise from 1 in 2500 upon discovery six days ago. We all know how these things end. Or do we? Unless somebody wants to keep civil defense very busy very soon, the chance is 95% that it will not hit; instead fly by closely to Earth, swing by to a new orbit that takes it away essentially forever or back again sooner or later through a keyhole, for a re-play at different odds. This is where our story starts and the story sounds familiar: season's greetings from 2004 MN4, now better known as (99942) Apophis. One more thing is similar: the close fly-by is an easy launch opportunity to 'jump aboard' that potentially hazardous asteroid for planetary science and tracking of longterm Yarkovsky-shifted keyhole resonant return risks. Indeed, missions are currently being discussed to launch during the 2029 fly-by of Apophis to rendezvous and investigate it closely right after. Others strive for an earlier launch to rendezvous well before, to observe all of the close fly-by at Earth and what it might do to a likely delicate rubble pile asteroid. Presently, this is an unlikely if not impossible option for sudden encounters like 2021 PDC with a lead time of months. But when asteroid mining (...possibly the other ...-not-if of asteroids?) takes off in the same manner as low Earth orbit communications satellites, this option may become a reality. But for now, even if a suitable planetary mission were serendipitously ready atop a suitable launch vehicle, could you get it an asteroid lander within 6 months? Surprisingly, this option existed between late 2014 and late 2018 when the MASCOT Qualification Model turned Flight Spare was kept fully integrated and flight ready for on-ground testing to prepare for the Flight Model's brief but complete mission on Ryugu with JAXA's highly successful HAYABUSA2 probe. At the same time, the MASCOT2 detailed design study for ESA's former AIM mission within the common NASA-ESA AIDA mission to (65803) Didymos and its moonlet, Dimorphos (then affectionately known as 'Didymoon'), paved the way for long-life MASCOTs, many of which have been discussed and studied since. The thoughtful design of MASCOT’s hardware and software allowed for a very high degree of re-use and flexibility regarding scientific payloads. MASCOT2 was to investigate the interior of Didymoon by Low-Frequency Radar. Close encounters like Apophis' offer unique opportunities for Earth-based planetary radar assets to work with spacecraft near and landers on the passing asteroid. We present a range of options for radar- and composition-oriented long-life MASCOT variants - to be delivered to the surfaces of the respective asteroid bodies - for the presently most likely near miss of 2021 PDC and the most certain close fly-by of (99942) Apophis on Friday, April 13th, 2029.

Abstract

The European Space Agency’s planetary defense Hera mission will launch to the Didymos binary asteroid system in 2023 (with bodies nicknamed Didymain and Didymoon). Once in vicinity of the asteroid, two 6U CubeSats will be deployed to contribute to the asteroid research and mitigation assessment objectives of the Hera mission. This paperwill describe the Juventas CubeSat, equipped with a low frequency radar payload to characterize the internal structure of Didymoon. Juventas is designed to be operated using the Hera mothercraft as a proxy. This mission architecture creates a new paradigm for CubeSats, requiring high levels of mission autonomy while operating in the challenging environment of a small-body binary asteroid. Juventas will utilize the inter-satellite link to Hera for performing radio science experiments, augmenting the characterization of the asteroid gravity field. Abstract

This white paper proposes that AMBITION, a Comet Nucleus Sample Return mission, be a cornerstone of ESA's Voyage 2050 programme. We summarise some of the most important questions still open in cometary science after the successes of the Rosetta mission, many of which require sample analysis using techniques that are only possible in laboratories on Earth. We then summarise measurements, instrumentation and mission scenarios that can address these questions, with a recommendation that ESA select an ambitious cryogenic sample return mission. Rendezvous missions to Main Belt comets and Centaurs are compelling cases for M-class missions, expanding our knowledge by exploring new classes of comets. AMBITION would engage a wide community, drawing expertise from a vast range of disciplines within planetary science and astrophysics. Abstract

A ground-penetrating radar will be integrated inside the guiderope ballast of the Mars'98 balloon mission. A prototype of this impulse system working in the 5-15 MHz band was tested close to Dumont d'Urville, the French Antarctic Station, in February 1993. We obtained a large set of profiles in cold ice with a glacier thickness from 200 to about 900 m. For each depth, the measured echoes are very clear with a good signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In this paper, we firstly describe the performances of the radar and we study the electromagnetic propagation in the Antarctica glacier. This knowledge allows us to use the frequency wavenumber migration to focus the signal, to increase the SNR and to rebuild an image of the subsurface. The migration process gives a good estimation of the real part of the permittivity (i.e., the velocity). The fact that the signal comes from different depths is used to measure the imaginary part of the permittivity which defines the ice attenuation. The spectral analysis gives its frequency dependence. Abstract

DePhine - Deimos and Phobos Interior Explorer - is a mission proposed in the context of ESA's Cosmic Vision program, for launch in 2030. The mission will explore the origin and the evolution of the two Martian satellites, by focusing on their interior structures and diversity, by addressing the following open questions: Are Phobos and Deimos true siblings, originating from the same source and sharing the same formation scenario? Are the satellites rubble piles or solid bodies? Do they possess hidden deposits of water ice in their interiors? The DePhine spacecraft will be inserted into Mars transfer and will initially enter a Deimos quasi-satellite orbit to carry out a comprehensive global mapping. The goal is to obtain physical parameters and remote sensing data for Deimos comparable to data expected to be available for Phobos at the time of the DePhine mission for comparative studies. As a highlight of the mission, close flybys will be performed at low velocities, which will increase data integration times, enhance the signal strength and data resolution. 10-20 flyby sequences, including polar passes, will result in a dense global grid of observation tracks. The spacecraft orbit will then be changed into a Phobos resonance orbit to carry out multiple close flybys and to perform similar remote sensing as for Deimos. The spacecraft will carry a suite of remote sensing instruments, including a camera system, a radio science experiment, a high-frequency radar, a magnetometer, and a Gamma Ray/Neutron Detector. A steerable antenna will allow simultaneous radio tracking and remote sensing observations (which is technically not possible for Mars Express). Additional instrumentation, e.g. a dust detector and a solar wind sensor, will address further science goals of the mission. If Ariane 6-2 and higher lift performance are available for launch (the baseline mission assumes a launch on a Soyuz Fregat), we expect to have greater spacecraft mobility and possibly added payload

Abstract

Physical interaction with small solar system bodies (SSSB) is key for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). The design of mining missions requires good understanding of SSSB properties, including composition, surface and interior structure, and thermal environment. But as the saying goes "If you've seen one asteroid, you've seen one Asteroid": Although some patterns may begin to appear, a stable and reliable scheme of SSSB classification still has to be evolved. Identified commonalities would enable generic ISRU technology and spacecraft design approaches with a high degree of re-use. Strategic approaches require much broader in-depth characterization of the SSSB populations of interest to the ISRU community. The DLR-ESTEC GOSSAMER Roadmap Science Working Groups identified target-flexible Multiple Near-Earth asteroid (NEA) Rendezvous (MNR) as one of the missions only feasible with solar sail propulsion, showed the ability to access any inclination and a wide range of heliocentric distances as well as continuous operation close to Earth's orbit where low delta-v objects reside.

The search for evidence of past or present life on Mars is the principal objective of the 2020 ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Rover mission. If such evidence is to be found anywhere, it will most likely be in the subsurface, where organic molecules are shielded from the destructive effects of ionizing radiation and atmospheric oxidants. For this reason, the ExoMars Rover mission has been optimized to investigate the subsurface to identify, understand, and sample those locations where conditions for the preservation of evidence of past life are most likely to be found. The Water Ice Subsurface Deposit Observation on Mars (WISDOM) ground-penetrating radar has been designed to provide information about the nature of the shallow subsurface over depth ranging from 3 to 10 m (with a vertical resolution of up to 3 cm), depending on the dielectric properties of the regolith. This depth range is critical to understanding the geologic evolution stratigraphy and distribution and state of subsurface H2O, which provide important clues in the search for life and the identification of optimal drilling sites for investigation and sampling by the Rover's 2-m drill. WISDOM will help ensure the safety and success of drilling operations by identification of potential hazards that might interfere with retrieval of subsurface samples.
