The density functional theory method is used to investigate the interaction boron substitution carbon materials with the hydrogen atoms. The results show that boron substitution lowers the electrostatic potential and hence improves the hydrogen adsorption energy on carbon, though the result is positive only for two substitutional boron atoms and not just one.

Titanium dioxide nanocrystalline particles were synthesized by peroxo titanium acid (PTA) approach from titanium alkoxide and inorganic salt precursors, and their structural and surface properties, porosities, and photocatalytic activities were comparatively examined by XRD, TG/DTA, DRIFT, UV-vis, low temperature N(2) adsorption, and methyl orange (MO) degradation. It was found that nanoparticles with single anatase phase can be obtained from alkoxide precursor even near room temperature if synthesis conditions are appropriately controlled. PTA-derived anatase nanoparticles from titanium alkoxide precursor have smaller crystalline sizes and better porosities, and contain less amount of peroxo group and no organic impurities as compared to those from TiCl(4) precursor. The advantages in structural property, porosity, and surface properties (few deficiencies) lead to a much better photocatalytic activity for TiO(2) nanoparticles from titanium alkoxide precursor in comparison with those from TiCl(4) precursor.

We have developed a method using novel latex beads for rapid identification of drug receptors using affinity purification. Composed of a glycidylmethacrylate (GMA) and styrene copolymer core with a GMA polymer surface, the beads minimize nonspecific protein binding and maximize purification efficiency. We demonstrated their performance by efficiently purifying FK506-binding protein using FK506-conjugated beads, and found that the amount of material needed was significantly reduced compared with previous methods. Using the latex beads, we identified a redox-related factor, Ref-1, as a target protein of an anti-NF-kappaB drug, E3330, demonstrating the existence of a new class of receptors of anti-NF-kappaB drugs. Our results suggest that the latex beads could provide a tool for the identification and analysis of drug receptors and should therefore be useful in drug development.
