Recently, an approximation technique was presented for solving strong nonlinear oscillators modeled by second-order differential equations. Due to the arising of an algebraic complicity, the method fails to determine suitable solution of some important nonlinear problems such as quadratic oscillator, cubical Duffing oscillator of softening springs, and pendulum equation. However, suitable solutions of these oscillators are found by rearranging only an algebraic equation related to amplitude and frequency. Abstract

Foamy viruses are complex retroviruses that have been shown to be transmitted from nonhuman primates to humans. In Bangladesh, infection with simian foamy virus (SFV) is ubiquitous among rhesus macaques, which come into contact with humans in diverse locations and contexts throughout the country. We analyzed microsatellite DNA from 126 macaques at six sites in Bangladesh in order to characterize geographic patterns of macaque population structure. We also included in this study 38 macaques owned by nomadic people who train them to perform for audiences. PCR was used to analyze a portion of the proviral gag gene from all SFV-positive macaques, and multiple clones were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis was used to infer long-term patterns of viral transmission. Analyses of SFV gag gene sequences indicated that macaque populations from different areas harbor genetically distinct strains of SFV, suggesting that geographic features such as forest cover play a role in determining the dispersal of macaques and SFV. We also found evidence suggesting that humans traveling the region with performing macaques likely play a role in the translocation of macaques and SFV. Our studies found that individual animals can harbor more than one strain of SFV and that presence of more than one SFV strain is more common among older animals. Some macaques are infected with SFV that appears to be recombinant. These findings paint a more detailed picture of how geographic and sociocultural factors influence the spectrum of simian-borne retroviruses.

Abstract

Five genotypes of mungbean under three salinity levels (0, 75 and 150 mM) were tested to investigate the germination traits of this crop under salt stress. BARI Mung-5 showed the lowest (GP) reduction (18.18% to control) while the highest reduction of GP (34.78%) was recorded in BARI Mung-2 at high level of salt stress (150 mM NaCl).At high salt stress the GR reduced more (34.77%) in BARI Mung-2 while the reduction was only 18.17% in BARI Mung-5. The coefficient of velocity of germination (CVG) of BARI Mung-2 diminished more but comparatively less inhibition was recorded in BARI Mung-5 under both salt stresses. The highest and the lowest mean germination time (MGT) were observed in BARI Mung-2 and BARI Mung-5, respectively. At 150 mM NaCl conditions, the lowest reduction in shoot length was recorded (40.81%) in BARI Mung-5 and dry weight, shoot length, root length, shoot fresh and dry weight, vigor index and salt tolerance index significantly reduced in all varieties under saline condition. Based on above all these parameters we can arranged all the varieties in such way in salt tolerance BARI Mung-5 > BARI Mung-6 > BARI Mung-4 > BARI Mung-3 > BARI Mung-2. From germination test, it can be declared that BARI Mung-5 and BARI Mung-2 are the most salt tolerant and most susceptible varieties at early growth stages, respectively among all the studied varieties.

24. Energy productivity and efficiency of wheat farming in Bangladesh

Abstract

Wheat is the second most important cereal crop in Bangladesh and production is highly sensitive to variations in the environment. We estimate productivity and energy efficiency of wheat farming in Bangladesh by applying a stochastic production frontier approach while accounting for the environmental constraints affecting production. Wheat farming is energy efficient with a net energy balance of 20,596 MJ per ha and energy ratio of 2.34. Environmental constraints such as a combination of unsuitable land, weed and pest attack, bad weather, planting delay and infertile soils significantly reduce wheat production and its energy efficiency. Environmental constraints account for a mean energy efficiency of 3 percentage points. Mean technical efficiency is 88% thereby indicating that elimination of inefficiencies can increase wheat energy output by 12%. Farmers' education, access to agricultural information and training in wheat production significantly improves efficiency, whereas events such as a delay in planting and first fertilization significantly reduce it. Policy recommendations include development of varieties that are resistant to environmental constraints and suitable for marginal areas; improvement of wheat farming practices; and investments in education and training of farmers as well as dissemination of information.

Abstract

The main objectives of the study are to estimate the farm specific economic efficiency of wheat production and to identify and measure the impacts of different factors associated with economic efficiency of wheat farmers. The study employed farm level cross sectional data from three major wheat growing areas of Bangladesh. Economic efficiency of wheat farmers was found to vary across locations and among farm categories. Cost of seed and urea, land rent and date of sowing were found to contribute significantly in the economic efficiency of wheat farmers. The average economic efficiency of wheat production in Bangladesh is 76 percent. This indicates a good potential for increasing wheat output by 24 percent with the existing technology and levels of inputs while considering amount and cost of inputs. Education and training of the farmers were found to have significant effect on yield and economic efficiency of wheat production.

Abstract

The article discusses the morphological variation and habitat details of Cyrtodactylus ayeyarwadyensis in Bangladesh. It states that Cyrtodactylus was included on the checklists of Bangladesh herpetofauna by only one species, the Cyrtodactylus khasiensis. It relates that the meistic variation of Cyrtodactylus includes 9-13 in supralabials, 8-11 in infralabials, and 18-23 in longitudinal tubercle. It says that the variation in pattern and colouration of Cyrtodactylus includes 10-12 in light bands on complete original tails and 7-10 in the dark brown blotches. It also mentions that Cyrtodactylus was considered to be endemic to the southwestern Myanmar.

36. Reassortment of newly emergent clade 2.3.4.4b A(H5N1) highly pathogenic avian influenza A viruses in Bangladesh.

Abstract

Avian influenza active surveillance was conducted in Bangladesh from January 2022 to November 2023 in live-poultry markets (LPMs) and Tanguar Haor wetlands. The predominant viruses circulating in LPMs were low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) A(H9N2) and clade 2.3.2.1a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) viruses. Non-H9N2 LPAIs were found at Tanguar Haor and at a lower prevalence in LPMs. Starting from June 2023, we detected novel genotypes of clade 2.3.4.4b A(H5N1) viruses from ducks in LPMs. The HA, NA, and M genes of these viruses are related to those of 2020 European clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses such as A/Eurasian wigeon/Netherlands/1/2020 (Netherlands/1). However, analyses of the other five gene segments' sequences identified three distinct genotypes (BD-G2, BD-G3, and BD-G4). BD-G2 viruses were closely related to the clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses that have been detected in Japan and nearby regions since November 2022. BD-G3 viruses were reassortants, with gene segments from other Eurasian LPAI viruses. BD-G4 viruses were similar to BD-G2 viruses, but their NS gene was accrued from contemporary Bangladeshi clade 2.3.2.1a A(H5N1) viruses. The ability of any of the clade 2.3.4.4b viruses to displace the long-entrenched 2.3.2.1a A(H5N1) viruses in Bangladesh is unknown.
