Abstract

Social stress can increase reactive oxygen species and derail antioxidant function in the brain, which may contribute to the onset and progression of mental health disorders. In hierarchical species, repeated social defeat can raise oxidative stress in the brain. However, how oxidative balance in the brain is regulated across different levels in a social hierarchy is unknown. Here, we study the effect of social status on patterns of oxidative stress across several brain divisions in a highly social cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni. In this species, dominant males are territorial, brightly colored, and reproductively active while subordinate males are not. We measured several markers of oxidative stress in macrodissected brain divisions in dominant and subordinate males. We found that dominant individuals had lower oxidative DNA damage (8-OhdG) in the midbrain while also having increased total antioxidant capacity in the midbrain and hypothalamus. However, in dominant males, oxidative DNA damage tended to be higher in the hypothalamus while total glutathione levels were lower in the telencephalon compared to subordinate males. Finally, we found that indicators of reproductive activity (gonadosomatic index and social behavior) were co-regulated with antioxidant function or oxidative damage in the telencephalon. Combined, our results suggest that social status and activation of the reproductive system regulate oxidative balance in the brain in a highly brain division specific manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Although women outnumber men in receiving PhDs, the pipeline to tenure track positions leaks, particularly for mothers. In fact, the leak continues into the granting of tenure and the achievement of promotion. While having children increases a man's chances at attaining tenure and advancement, mothering decreasing a woman's chances. Implications for HRD academics to actively address this problem in their institutions of higher learning are discussed.

Abstract

Close inspection of the pre-edge in oxygen near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectra of single step, gas phase synthesized titanium oxynitride photocatalysts with 20 nm particle size reveals an additional eg resonance in the VB that went unnoticed in previous TiO2 anion doping studies. The relative spectral weight of this Ti(3d)-O(2p) hybridized state with respect to and located between the readily established t2g and eg resonances scales qualitatively with the photocatalytic decomposition power, suggesting that this extra resonance bears co-responsibility for the photocatalytic performance of titanium oxynitrides at visible light wavelengths.

Abstract

Partial substitution of Fe by Ta in the hole-doped La0.5Sr0.5FeO3 decreases the electric conductivity by up to three orders of magnitude. This decrease is in immediate correlation with a decrease of the electron hole concentration and a shift of the spectral weight within the O(1s)-Fe(3d) mixed states from eg bands near the Fermi energy to t2g bands. Corresponding differences in the Fe(2p) and O(1s) X-ray absorption spectra reveals formation of states with increased covalency in the initial state and states which contain O(2p) character, and that hole states are responsible for transport changes in the material. Abstract

International audience; We report on high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies on Cf249–253 with spectral linewidths in the order of 100 MHz carried out at the RISIKO mass separator at Mainz University. In total three atomic ground-state transitions were investigated and the hyperfine parameters for the odd-A isotopes and isotope shift for all examined isotopes have been determined from the measured spectra. The isotope shift measurements allowed tracking of changes in mean-squared charge radii across the deformed nuclear shell closure at N=152, whereby shape discontinuities were not observed. Experimental hyperfine coupling constants of the atomic ground state were combined with relativistic many-body atomic calculations to extract the nuclear magnetic-dipole moment of Cf249 with improved precision to μI(249Cf)=−0.395(17)μN, whereas μI(251Cf)=−0.571(24)μN and μI(253Cf)=−0.731(35)μN were derived for the first time. Additionally, the spectroscopic quadrupole moments QS(249Cf)=6.27(33)eb and QS(253Cf)=5.53(51)eb were extracted.

Abstract

This project defends the notion that Genesis sets the expectations for the gospel by introducing the main characters, the intended purpose of creation, the main problem that exists within creation, and expectations for how that problem will be addressed. The intent is to demonstrate that the promise of a seed of the woman who will crush the head of the serpent in Genesis 3:15 is understood and developed foundationally in Genesis as humanity's hope to be set right with God and that this is consistent with the rest of Scripture. Chapter 1 shows how an understanding of Genesis is imperative to grasping the narrative of Scripture. This chapter validates the need for a biblical-theological understanding of Scripture. The foundation for the assumptions later biblical authors make are laid in Genesis. Chapter 2 demonstrates how Genesis sets the foundational assumptions of our story and how it is to be read. It introduces the reader to the creator God, his special creation of humanity, the deceiving serpent, the tension introduced by sin, and the first glimmer of hope that things will one day be restored. Chapter 3 reveals the depths to which humanity has fallen. It demonstrates that though people have hearts that are utterly sinful and broken, God continues provide a promised seed through which he will redeem his creation. Chapter 4 clarifies the method through which God will bring salvation. It introduces the idea of a chosen seed through whom God will bless the nations. Chapter 5 explores a pattern for the promised deliverer and begins to answer the question of how an unrighteous person can be counted as righteous. It demonstrates that salvation has always been through faith in the promises of God. Chapter 6 shows the nature of faith in the promises of God. Through this faith people are shaped into who God desires them to be. It also introduces the depth of God's love for his people. Chapter 7 explains that though Genesis does not fully answer the question of how sinful mankind can be restored to a right relationship with God, it does teach the reader what to look for as God unfolds his plan for redemption in history. God is working out his covenant promises and is faithful to bring them about by his power even when one is unable to see his hand at work.

The electrical conductivity of ceramic bars was measured using a dc four-probe method as a function of temperature in air up to 970°C. All compositions showed thermally activated p-type semi-conductivity up to ~450°C and then a transition to metal-like conductivity. The small-polaron hopping p-type semi-conductivity depends on the oxygen nonstoichiometry, which increases with increasing temperature. Metal-like conductivity is attributed to the overlap of the transition metal d-electron orbitals with the oxygen p-orbitals. Strontium-rich compositions show higher conductivity. The Co/Fe ratio does not influence much the p-type semi-conduction. Iron-rich compositions revealed more metal-like conduction behavior. The degree of overlap between transition metal d-orbitals and oxygen p-orbitals depends on the Ba/Sr as well as on the Co/Fe ratios

Abstract

We report, for the first time, the atmospheric pressure synthesis of nonagglomerated nanoparticles (20–60 nm in diameter) of the uncommon monoclinic phase of some heavy rare earth sesquioxides RE2O3 (RE=Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb). The RE2O3 nanoparticles, prepared by a flame synthesis process, were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy. Monoclinic nanoparticles were formed when the flame temperature was sufficiently high; lower temperatures led to the formation of the normal cubic (C-type) phase. We explain the formation of the uncommon monoclinic phase on the basis of pressure–temperature phase equilibria, and the extra internal pressure induced by surface curvature of the nanoparticles.
