The study identified the factors affecting the adoption of agrochemical safety measures among crop farmers in the Southern Agricultural Zone of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study include; identifying the rate of awareness of agrochemical safety measures, to identify adoption level of agrochemical safety measures and to determine the effect of socio-economic characteristic on the adoption of agrochemical safety measures. A multistage sampling technique was employed to select 220 crop farmers for the study. A structured questionnaire was used to obtain data and data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The Result of the study revealed that farmers in the area were aware of the following agrochemical safety measures: avoid eating and drinking when using agrochemicals/bathing after spraying (85%), washing spraying clothes separately from other clothes (74%), and danger of ingestion/inhalation of agrochemicals (70%) among others. Also, results on the adoption of agrochemical safety measures show that 50% of the respondents adopted on a high scale level, 38% adopted on a medium scale and 12% adopted on a low scale. Level of education, extension contact, farm size, and household size were the socio-economic characteristics that had un influence on the adoption of agrochemical safety measures in the area. It is therefore recommended that extension workers should intensify un enlightenment campaign on the danger of exposure to agrochemicals in order to achieve full adoption of agrochemical safety measures by crop farmers.

Summary: Background: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, is one of the deadliest pandemics of the past 100 years. Genomic sequencing has an important role in monitoring of the evolution of the virus, including the detection of new viral variants. We aimed to describe the genomic epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2 infections in The Gambia. Methods: Nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs collected from people with suspected cases of COVID-19 and international travellers were tested for SARS-CoV-2 with standard RT-PCR methods. SARS-CoV-2-positive samples were sequenced according to standard library preparation and sequencing protocols. Bioinformatic analysis was done using ARTIC pipelines and Pangolin was used to assign lineages. To construct phylogenetic trees, sequences were first stratified into different COVID-19 waves (waves 1–4) and aligned. Clustering analysis was done and phylogenetic trees constructed. Findings: Between March, 2020, and January, 2022, 11 911 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were recorded in The Gambia, and 1638 SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sequenced. Cases were broadly distributed into four waves, with more cases during the waves that coincided with the rainy season (July–October). Each wave occurred after the introduction of new viral variants or lineages, or both, generally those already established in Europe or in other African countries. Local transmission was higher during the first and third waves (ie, those that corresponded with the rainy season), in which the B.1.416 lineage and delta (AY.34.1) were dominant, respectively. The second wave was driven by the alpha and eta variants and the B.1.1.420 lineage. The fourth wave was driven by the omicron variant and was predominantly associated with the BA.1.1 lineage. Interpretation: More cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were recorded in The Gambia during peaks of the pandemic that coincided with the rainy season, in line with transmission patterns for other respiratory viruses. The introduction of new lineages or variants preceded epidemic waves, highlighting the importance of implementing well structured genomic surveillance at a national level to detect and monitor emerging and circulating variants. The SARS-CoV-2 disease, first detected in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 has become a global pandemic and is causing an unprecedented burden on health care systems and the economy globally. While the travel history of index cases may suggest the origin of infection, phylogenetic analysis of isolated strains from these cases and contacts will increase the understanding and link between local transmission and other global populations. The objective of this analysis was to provide genomic data on the first six cases of SARS-CoV-2 in The Gambia and to determine the source of infection. This ultimately provide baseline data for subsequent local transmission and contribute genomic diversity information towards local and global data. Our analysis has shown that the SARS-CoV-2 virus identified in The Gambia are of European and Asian origin and sequenced data matched patients' travel history. In addition, we were able to show that two COVID-19 positive cases travelling in the same flight had different strains of SARS-CoV-2. Although whole genome sequencing (WGS) data is still limited in sub-Saharan Africa, this approach has proven to be a highly sensitive, specific and confirmatory tool for SARS-CoV-2 detection.

BACKGROUND:The isolation of Extended spectrum βlactamase (ESBLs) producing Enterobacteriaceae among food handlers and their implication as sources of food borne outbreaks are a public health concern. This study seeks to investigate the prevalence of faecal carriage of these bacteria among food handlers in the West Coast Region of The Gambia. METHOD:This study enrolled 600 participants from 60 Lower Basic Schools in West Coast Region of the country. Stool samples collected from the participants were presumptively screened for the ESBLs producing Enterobacteriaceae, using Drigalski agar, supplemented with 2mg/L cefotaxime. The bacterial colonies that grew on each Drigalski agar were tested for ESBL production by the double disk synergy test as recommended by Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI-2015). The confirmatory analysis for ESBL was determined as the zone of inhibition of cefotaxime and/or ceftazidime to ≥5mm from that of cefotaxime /clavulanicacid and/or ceftazidime/clavulanic acid. The presumptive screening of isolates for AmpC phenotypes was done by testing the organism against cefoxitin. The prevalence of the ESBL carriage was presented in percentages. The association of risk factors to the faecal carriage of ESBLs producing Enterobacteriaceae was performed by Pearson Chi-squared and Fishers Exact at (p ≤ 0.05). RESULT:The prevalence of faecal carriage ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae among food handlers was 5.0% (28/565). We found50% (14/28) and3.57% (1/28) ESBL producing bacteria were presumptive AmpC and carbapenemase resistance phenotype. Themost abundant ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae were Klebsiella spp 32.1% (9/28) and Escherichia spp 28.6% (8/28). The use of antibiotics in the last 3 months was found to be significantly associated (P = 0.012) with the faecal carriage of ESBLs producing Enterobacteriaceae. CONCLUSION:The prevalence of faecal carriage of ESBLs producing Enterobacteriaceae among food handlers in the Gambia is low. The history to use of the antibiotics in the last three months was found to be significantly associated with this prevalence. Therefore, the institution of a robust antimicrobial surveillance and treatment of patients with such infections are necessary to curb the spread of these multidrug resistant bacteria in the country. Rational prescription and usage of the antibiotics especially cephalosporin should be advocated both in public and private health facilities.

This study examined the impact properties of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) mixtures with steel fiber (SF) and retrofitted with polyurethane (PU) grouting using repeated drop-weight tests. Micro-steel fiber was added to UHPC mixes from 0 to 3% Vf, and PU grouting overlays of 5 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm were applied. Digital image correlation (DIC) was used to analyze failure modes. The results showed significant impact durability and energy absorption improvements with increased SF content and thicker PU overlays. UHPC-15PU exhibited 363% and 449% higher first crack and failure strengths than UHPC-5PU. DIC analysis confirmed the failure patterns of the U-shaped UHPC specimen under impact load conditions. ObjectivesTo examine the distribution of birth weight in children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) compared with the general US population, and to investigate the relationship between birth weight and severity of NAFLD.Study designA multicenter, cross-sectional study of children with biopsy-proven NAFLD enrolled in the Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis Clinical Research Network Database. Birth weight was categorized as low birth weight (LBW), normal birth weight (NBW), or high birth weight (HBW) and compared with the birth weight distribution in the general US population. Objective: Reports demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of strut-adjusted volume implants (SAVI) in Japan are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the treatment outcomes of SAVI and whole-breast irradiation (WBI) at a single facility. Materials and Methods: Data were retrospectively extracted from the medical records of patients treated with SAVI or WBI following partial mastectomy (Bp). Patients undergoing Bp, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and SAVI spacer insertion followed by brachytherapy with the SAVI device were compared to those followed with WBI. Local recurrence was assessed annually by physical examination, bilateral mammography, and breast ultrasonography. Results: The SAVI and WBI groups comprised 53 and 113 patients, with a median age of 55 and 52 years, respectively; among them, 47 and 91 patients had a pathological tumor diameter ≤2 cm and six and 22 had a pathological tumor diameter >2 cm, respectively. Recurrence events, acute adverse events, and late adverse events were observed in the SAVI and WBI groups in 1 and 3 (p = 0.726), 24 and 79 (p = 0.01), and 24 and 18 patients (p = 0.00002), respectively, with median observation periods of 60.0 and 47.8 months, respectively. All adverse events were grades 1–2, with dermatitis being the most common in the acute phase. In the late phase, pigmentation was common in both groups. Conclusion: The local recurrence rate does not differ between SAVI and WBI within the relatively short-term follow-up period. Longer follow-up is required to confirm our results in the Japanese population.

Abstract Background Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) following atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation can cause considerable distress. Aim Continuous intravenous propofol sedation with adaptive servo‐ventilation (ASV) with or without an analgesic, pentazocine, during AF ablation was studied in 272 consecutive patients with paroxysmal, persistent, and long‐standing persistent AF. The study objectives were to determine the incidence of PONV after AF ablation and to assess the predictive value of factors for PONV using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results The present sedation maneuver was successfully accomplished with a low incidence of hypotension and without discontinuation of ablation or switching to general anesthesia, while maintaining an acceptable procedural time (102 ± 32 min). The incidence of PONV was 5.5% (15/272). Nausea occurred in nine patients after an average of 4.6 ± 3.5 h (range: 2–12 h) postablation, and vomiting with nausea occurred in six patients after an average of 4.5 ± 3.1 h (range: 1–9 h) postablation. The postablation interval did not differ significantly between the occurrence of nausea and nausea accompanied by vomiting. AUCs based on various factors, including the Apfel score, ranged from 0.55 to 0.67, indicating low accuracy in predicting PONV occurrence. Conclusions The incidence of PONV after propofol sedation with ASV was the lowest (5.5%) reported to date. Scoring systems, which included the Apfel score, were ineffective in predicting PONV. The low PONV incidence in addition to the efficacy of propofol sedation with ASV revealed the adequacy of this regimen for AF ablation.

IntroductionEvidence in non-ocular tissues indicate that the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) may be regulated in a circadian manner leading to the idea that GSH levels in the lens may also be controlled in a circadian manner to anticipate periods of oxidative stress.MethodsMale rat Wistar lenses (6 weeks) were collected every 4 hours over a 24-hour period at 6am, 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm and 2am and quantitative-PCR, western blotting and immunohistochemistry performed to examine the expression of core clock genes and proteins (BMAL1, CLOCK, CRY1-2, PER 1-3) and their subcellular localisation over a 24-hour period. Western blotting of lenses was also performed to examine the expression of NRF2, a transcription factor involved in regulating genes involved in GSH homeostasis and GSH related enzymes (GCLC, GS and GR) over the 24-hour period. Finally, HLPC was used to measure GSH levels in the aqueous humour and lenses every 4 hours over a 24-hour period.ResultsThe rat lens contains the core molecular components of a circadian clock with the expression of core clock proteins, NRF2 and GSH related enzymes fluctuating over a 24-hour period. BMAL1 expression was highest during the day, with BMAL1 localised to the nuclei at 10am. NRF2 expression remained constant over the 24-hour period, although appeared to move in and out of the nuclei every 4 hours. GSH related enzyme expression tended to peak at the start of night which correlated with high levels of GSH in the lens and lower levels of GSH in the aqueous humour.ConclusionThe lens contains the key components of a circadian clock, and time-of-day differences exist in the expression of GSH and GSH related enzymes involved in maintaining GSH homeostasis. GSH levels in the rat lens were highest at the start of night which represents the active phase of the rat when high GSH levels may be required to counteract oxidative stress induced by cellular metabolism. Future work to directly link the clock to regulation of GSH levels in the lens will be important in determining whether the clock can be used to help restore GSH levels in the lens.

The chirality of amino acids in extraterrestrial materials may provide an insight into the origin of the essential l-enantiopure amino acids in the terrestrial biosphere. In 2020, the Hayabusa2 mission succeeded in bringing back surface materials from the C-type asteroid (162173) Ryugu to the Earth. Amino acids were one of the targeted organic molecules to be studied in the Ryugu samples. To analyze the various structural isomers of amino acids, which were expected to be present, from the limited amount of the returned samples, the development of a highly-sensitive and selective analytical method was necessary. In the present study, a three-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography (3D-HPLC) system has been developed for the enantioselective determination of five proteinogenic and three non-proteinogenic amino acids in the Ryugu samples, in which amino acids in the sample were separated by reversed-phase, anion-exchange and enantioselective columns after the fluorescence derivatization with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiozole. The applicability of the analytical system to the extraterrestrial samples was evaluated by analyzing several types of carbonaceous meteorites before applying the system to the Ryugu samples. In the analysis of the Ryugu samples, all of the target amino acids were successfully determined quantitatively. Non-proteinogenic amino acids including 2-amino-n-butyric acid, isovaline and norvaline, rarely present in the terrestrial environment, were found as almost racemic mixtures with 47.1 to 55.2%l.

Abstract Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), caused by pathology in the cochlea, is the most common type of hearing loss in humans. It is generally irreversible with very few effective pharmacological treatments available to prevent the degenerative changes or minimise the impact. Part of this has been attributed to difficulty of translating “proof-of-concept” for novel treatments established in small animal models to human therapies. There is an increasing interest in the use of sheep as a large animal model. In this article, we review the small and large animal models used in pre-clinical hearing research such as mice, rats, chinchilla, guinea pig, rabbit, cat, monkey, dog, pig, and sheep to humans, and compare the physiology, inner ear anatomy, and some of their use as model systems for SNHL, including cochlear implantation surgeries. Sheep have similar cochlear anatomy, auditory threshold, neonatal auditory system development, adult and infant body size, and number of birth as humans. Based on these comparisons, we suggest that sheep are well-suited as a potential translational animal model that bridges the gap between rodent model research to the clinical use in humans. This is especially in areas looking at changes across the life-course or in specific areas of experimental investigation such as cochlear implantation and other surgical procedures, biomedical device development and age-related sensorineural hearing loss research. Combined use of small animals for research that require higher throughput and genetic modification and large animals for medical translation could greatly accelerate the overall translation of basic research in the field of auditory neuroscience from bench to clinic.

Due to their physiological relevance, cell-based assays using human-induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cells are a promising in vitro pharmacological evaluation system for drug candidates. However, cell-based assays involve complex processes such as long-term culture, real-time and continuous observation of living cells, and detection of many cellular events. Automating multi-sample processing through these assays will enhance reproducibility by limiting human error and reduce researchers’ valuable time spent conducting these experiments. Furthermore, this integration enables continuous tracking of morphological changes, which is not possible with the use of stand-alone devices.This report describes a new laboratory automation system called the Screening Station, which uses novel automation control and scheduling software called Green Button Go to integrate various devices. To integrate the above-mentioned processes, we established three workflows in Green Button Go: 1) For long-term cell culture, culture plates and medium containers are transported from the automatic CO2 incubator and cool incubator, respectively, and the cell culture medium in the microplates is exchanged daily using the Biomek i7 workstation; 2) For time-lapse live-cell imaging, culture plates are automatically transferred between the CQ1 confocal quantitative image cytometer and the SCALE48W automatic CO2 incubator; 3) For immunofluorescence imaging assays, in addition to the above-mentioned devices, the 405LS microplate washer allows for formalin-fixation and immunostaining of cells. By scheduling various combinations of the three workflows, we successfully automated the culture and medium exchange processes for iPSCs derived from patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, confirmation of their differentiation status by live-cell imaging, and confirmation of the presence of differentiation markers by immunostaining. In addition, deep learning analysis enabled us to quantify the degree of iPSC differentiation from live-cell imaging data. Further, the results of the fully automated experiments could be accessed via the intranet, enabling experiments and analysis to be conducted remotely once the necessary reagents and labware were prepared. We expect that the ability to perform clinically and physiologically relevant cell-based assays from remote locations using the Screening Station will facilitate global research collaboration and accelerate the discovery of new drug candidates.

Blood–brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction is a key feature in neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we developed a microfluidic human BBB-on-a-chip to model barrier dysfunction and immune cell migration using immortalized TY10 brain endothelial cells, pericytes, and astrocytes. It was found that immortalized TY10 brain endothelial cells developed a microvascular structure under flow. Pericytes were localized on the basal side surrounding the TY10 microvascular structure, showing an in vivo-like structure. Barrier integrity increased under co-culture with pericytes. In addition, both ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and anti-Claudin-5 (CLDN5) neutralizing antibody caused a decrease in the transendothelial electrical resistance (TEER). EDTA caused the leakage of 20 kDa dextran, suggesting different effects on the BBB based on the mechanism of action, whereas anti-CLDN5 antibody did not cause leakage. In the tri-culture model, human T cells migrated through endothelial vessels towards basal C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12 (CXCL12). The live-imaging analysis confirmed the extravasation of fluorescence-labelled T cells in a CXCL12-concentration- and time-dependent manner. Our BBB model had an in vivo-like structure and successfully represented barrier dysfunction and transendothelial T cell migration. In addition, our study suggests that the inhibition of CLDN5 attenuates the BBB in humans. This platform has various potential uses in relation to the BBB in both drug discovery research and in elucidating the mechanisms of central nervous system diseases.

Abstract Viral cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) in plasma has been widely evaluated for detecting cancer and monitoring disease in virus‐associated tumors. We investigated whether the amount of cfDNA of human T‐cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV‐1) correlates with disease state in adult T‐cell leukemia‐lymphoma (ATL). HTLV‐1 cfDNA in aggressive ATL was significantly higher than that in indolent ATL and asymptomatic carriers. Notably, patients with lymphoma type represented higher HTLV‐1 cfDNA amount than chronic and smoldering subtypes, though they had no abnormal lymphocytes in the peripheral blood. HTLV‐1 cfDNA can be a universal biomarker that reflects the expansion of ATL clones.

Iron and folic Acid (IFA) supplementation is an effective intervention for reducing the incidence of anaemia during pregnancy. The WHO recommends at least 6 months intake of IFA to pregnant women. However, in Ghana some women experience challenges with adhering to IFA supplementation. The main objective of the study was to assess the level of adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation and its associated factors among pregnant women in a peri-urban municipality in Northern Ghana. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March to December 2021 among 400 pregnant women who attended ANC in Sagnarigu municipality in Ghana and were selected through a 3-stage random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, univariate and binary logistic regression statistical tools. Self-reported level of adherence to iron and folic acid supplementation was 84.5%. Knowledge of iron and folic acid supplementation (AOR = 0.08: 021, 0.343) was associated with adherence. Three other factors: time of first antenatal visit (AOR = 0.32: 0.153, 0.649) having history of anaemia [AOR = 2.67: 1.373, 5.201] having side effects of IFA [AOR = 3.70, CI: (1.756, 7.793)], and having knowledge of management of side effects of iron and folic acid supplementation (AOR = 0.08: 021, 0.343) were found to be significantly associated with adherence. Adherence to iron and folic supplementation among the pregnant women was generally frequent. Strategies to increase iron and folic acid supplementation adherence among pregnant women could focus on encouraging pregnant women to have early ANC visits and educating them on how to manage side effects.

In atopic dermatitis (AD), nerves are abnormally stretched near the surface of the skin, making it sensitive to itching. Expression of neurotrophic factor Artemin (ARTN) involved in such nerve stretching is induced by the xenobiotic response (XRE) to air pollutants and UV radiation products. Therefore, AD can be monitored by the XRE response. Previously, we established a human keratinocyte cell line stably expressing a NanoLuc reporter gene downstream of XRE. We found that 6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ), a tryptophan metabolite and known inducer of the XRE, increased reporter and Artemin mRNA expression, indicating that FICZ-treated cells could be a model for AD. Lavender essential oil has been used in folk medicine to treat AD, but the scientific basis for its use is unclear. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of lavender essential oil and its major components, linalyl acetate and linalool, to suppress AD and sensitize skin using the established AD model cell line, and keratinocyte and dendritic cell activation assays. Our results indicated that lavender essential oil from L. angustifolia and linalyl acetate exerted a strong AD inhibitory effect and almost no skin sensitization. Our model is useful in that it can circumvent the practice of using animal studies to evaluate AD medicines.

This article presents an overview of the research on the effects of internal curing (IC) on ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The process of adding a curing ingredient to the concrete mixture to serve as a water reservoir is known as internal curing. IC is a viable technique for supplying additional water for curing cement-based material with lower water-to-binder concrete. It is distinct from externally applied curing. The water meant for internal water curing is dispersed within the concrete after it hardened and facilitated the hydration process. It was used to minimize self-desiccation and shrinkage in UHPC. Based on the reviewed literature, an exchange between mechanical characteristics and autogenous shrinkage for concrete was observed for internally cured UHPC. Even though IC affects the mechanical characteristics, after 28 days, it was possible to achieve a compressive strength of over 150 MPa. Thermal curing was found to exhibit a remarkable effect on the development of UHPC strength. Experimental findings revealed that using pre-saturated aggregates for IC improves the tensile strength of UHPC. The scanning electron microscope images revealed that the bulk of the voids within the super-absorbent polymer cavities are filled with portlandite.

Abstract We performed in-situ analysis on a ~ 1 mm-sized grain A0080 returned by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft from near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu to investigate the relationship of soluble organic matter (SOM) to minerals. Desorption electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry (DESI-HRMS) imaging mapped more than 200 CHN, CHO, CHO–Na (sodium adducted), and CHNO soluble organic compounds. A heterogeneous spatial distribution was observed for different compound classes of SOM as well as among alkylated homologues on the sample surface. The A0080 sample showed mineralogy more like an Ivuna-type (CI) carbonaceous chondrite than other meteorites. It contained two different lithologies, which are either rich (lithology 1) or poor (lithology 2) in magnetite, pyrrhotite, and dolomite. CHN compounds were more concentrated in lithology 1 than in lithology 2; on the other hand, CHO, CHO–Na, and CHNO compounds were distributed in both lithologies. Such different spatial distribution of SOM is likely the result of interaction of the SOM with minerals, during precipitation of the SOM via fluid activity, or could be due to difference in transportation efficiencies of SOMs in aqueous fluid. Organic-related ions measured by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF–SIMS) did not coincide with the spatial distribution revealed by DESI-HRMS imaging. This result may be because the different ionization mechanism between DESI and SIMS, or indicate that the ToF–SIMS data would be mainly derived from methanol-insoluble organic matter in A0080. In the Orgueil meteorite, such relationship between altered minerals and SOM distributions was not observed by DESI-HRMS analysis and field-emission scanning electron microscopy, which would result from differences of SOM formation processes and sequent alteration process on the parent bodies or even on the Earth. Alkylated homologues of CHN compounds were identified in A0080 by DESI-HRMS imaging as observed in the Murchison meteorite, but not from the Orgueil meteorite. These compounds with a large C number were enriched in Murchison fragments with abundant carbonate grains. In contrast, such relationship was not observed in A0080, implying different formation or growth mechanisms for the alkylated CHN compounds by interaction with fluid and minerals on the Murchison parent body and asteroid Ryugu. Good durability of concrete is an essential part of the design process, and durability designs are carried out by specifying material requirements and the exposure conditions in which the structure is in contact. The main feature of durable concrete is low water absorption. Almost all forms of deterioration in reinforced concrete involve harmful fluid ingress through the concretes pore structure. In wet concrete, the water ingress rate or other liquids is mainly controlled by absorption due to capillary rise. This study examines the effect of basalt, polypropylene, and steel fiber in different volume fractions (Vf) of 0.3%, 0.6%, and 0.9% for absorption tests. A total of 8 specimens for different fiber volume fractions were examined based on the rate of water absorption test recommended by ASTM C1585-04. A result obtained has been analyzed and compared with the control specimen. A relationship between absorption rate and the square root of time for both concrete mixtures was represented graphically and linearly. Result data showed a precise decrease in absorption due to incorporating both types of fiber. Also, basalt and polypropylene showed greater uptake than steel fiber and enhanced water transport into concrete specimens from the result data. However, steel fiber showed high resistance to absorption rater than the control specimen and other fiber. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
