5. Performance of different fire retardant products applied on Norway spruce tested in a Cone calorimeter

Abstract

On the European market there are several fire retardant products available, which reach class B in the European classification system. The producers promise their fire retardants are effective in reducing different reaction to fire parameters of wood such as the time to ignition, the mass loss rate, the heat release rate, the total heat release, the charring rate and the flame spread. This paper discusses the performance of fire retardant products as pressure impregnated wood, non-intumescence surface coatings and intumescence coatings on Norway spruce (Picea abies). The investigations are performed by using a cone calo- rimeter test according to ISO 5660. The thermal exposures of the investigations are 50 kW/m2 and the standard IS0 834 test curve. As result information about the heat release rate, the mass loss rate and the total heat release for duration of 900 seconds will be presented in this paper.

Abstract

In vivo samples of epididymal fluids were obtained through the use of micropuncture techniques. Microsamples from four areas of the rat epididymis were analyzed for Na+and K+concentrations and for sperm density. Na+values declined significantly from caput to corpus epididymidis (P<0.01), while K+and sperm concentrations increased significantly (P<0.01). A large water loss from the epididymal lumen was calculated, as well as net losses of both cations. Water losses may be explained on the basis of an active Na+pump; however, the effect of the absolute values of epididymal Na+and K+concentrations on sperm motility and fertility remains unresolved.

20. The role of mining in the economy of South West Africa/ Namibia

Abstract

While compiling the national accounts for SWA/Namibia over the past seven years my interest was drawn to the overwhelming impact mining has on the country's overall economic activity. This tempted me to make a study of the contribution of mining to the economic development of SWA/Namibia. This study was conducted during a period in which virtually no reliable data on the subject were available and it was necessary to make an intensive search for available statistics and to revise, verify and arrange them into an acceptable format. This thesis therefore contains the result of research conducted over that past five years and I hope that it may contribute towards a better understanding of the functioning of SWA/Namibia's economy and the role mining plays in this process. I also hope that the thesis may clarify some of the real economic problems facing the country and offer some suggestions to overcome them in order that the people of SWA/Namibia may enjoy the full benefit of the country's mineral resources, This study was made possible mainly through my employment in the Economic and Financial Planning Division of the Department of Finance in Windhoek. In this respect I owe a special debt of gratitude to the Secretary for Finance, Dr. J. Jones, for the use of the department's computer and word processing facilities, and for access to official statistics. The views expressed in this thesis are, however, solely my own and not those of the Department of Finance.
