1. Coil Creep and Skew-Quadrupole Field Components in the Tevatron

Abstract

During the first 20 years of operation, the Fermilab Tevatron developed strong coupling between the two transverse degrees of freedom. The required strength of the circuit of skew quadrupole magnets used to correct for coupling, though capable, had increased by an order of magnitude since 1983. Changes made to the Tevatron for colliding beams operation had altered the skew quadrupole corrector distribution and strong coupling became evident, often encumbering routine operation during the colliding beam physics run. It was discovered that the superconducting coils of the main dipole magnets had become vertically displaced relative to their yokes since their construction. The ensuing systematic skew quadrupole field introduced by this displacement accounts for the required corrector settings and observed beam behavior. The magnets were adjusted in situ over the course of several long maintenance periods and the Tevatron performance improved as a result., Comment: 22 pp

Abstract

The geometric structure of the Rh$_8^+$ cation is investigated using a combination of far-infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The energetic ordering of the different structural motifs is found to depend sensitively on the choice of pure or hybrid exchange functionals. Comparison of experimental and calculated spectra suggests the cluster to have a close-packed, bicapped octahedral structure, in contrast to recent predictions of a cubic structure for the neutral cluster. Our findings demonstrate the importance of including some exact exchange contributions in the DFT calculations, via hybrid functionals, when applied to rhodium clusters, and cast doubt on the application of pure functionals for late transition metal clusters in general., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Data from the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS), mounted on the International Space Station (ISS), were used to develop and test algorithms for remotely retrieving ecosystem productivity. Twenty DESIS images were used from three widely separated forested study sites representing deciduous and conifer forests. Gross primary production (GPP) values from eddy covariance flux towers at the sites were matched with DESIS spectral reflectances collected on the same days. Multiple algorithms were successful relating spectral reflectance with GPP, including: spectral vegetation indices (SVI) sensitive to chlorophyll content, SVI used in a photosynthetic light-use efficiency model framework, spectral shape characteristics through spectral derivatives and absorption feature analysis, and statistical models leading to multiband hyperspectral indices from partial least squares regression. Successful algorithms were able to achieve R2 better than 0.7 using a diverse set of observations combining data from different sites from multiple years and at multiple times during the year. The demonstrated robustness of the algorithms provides some confidence in using DESIS imagery to map spatial patterns of GPP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the results of a search for CP-violating decay rate asymmetries (ACP) in the charm decay modes D+K-K+, D+K»*0K+, D++, and D0K+K-. Our measurements are all consistent with zero asymmetry: ACP=-0.0310.068, ACP(K*K)=-0.120.13, ACP()=0.0660.086, and ACP(KK)=0.0240.084. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687.

Abstract

A measurement of the lifetime of the charmed strange baryon c0 is presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high energy photoproduction experiment E687. The measurement has been made using 4210 c0-+ decays. The lifetime of the c0 is measured to be 0.101-0.017+0.0250.005 ps and its mass is measured to be 2462.13.11.4 MeV/c2.

Abstract

Measurements of the mass and lifetime of the c+ decaying into -++ are presented. The data were accumulated by the Fermilab high-energy photoproduction experiment E687. The mass of the c+ is measured to be 2464.42.01.4 MeV/c2 and the lifetime is measured to be 0.41-0.08+0.110.02 ps.

Abstract

A system employing an array of inductive pick-up coils around the perimeter of a cylinder has been developed for measurements of the rapidly changing field in the new corrector magnets for the Fermilab Booster. The coils are fabricated on printed circuit boards and feature windings which buck dipole, quadrupole, and sextupole fields, allowing sensitive measurements of both strength and higher-order harmonics. The array of coils is simultaneously sampled at data rates of up to 100 kHz with 10 kHz bandwidth using 24-bit ADC's. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The International Linear Collider reference design requires over 13000 magnets, of approximately 135 styles, which must operate with very high reliability. The Fermilab Main Injector represents a modern machine with many conventional magnet styles, each of significant quantity, that has now accumulated many hundreds of magnet-years of operation. We review here the performance of the magnets built for this machine, assess their reliability and categorize the failure modes, and discuss implications for reliability of similar magnet styles expected to be used at the ILC. Abstract

A new package of six corrector elements has been designed to better control the beam position, tune, and chromaticity in the Fermilab Booster synchrotron. It incorporates both normal and skew orientations of dipole, quadrupole, and sextupole magnets. These new corrector magnets will be installed in the Fermilab Booster ring in place of old style corrector elements. A severe space restriction and rapid slew rate have posed special challenges.
