We present resolved images of IRAS 23077+6707 (“Dracula’s Chivito”) in 1.3 mm/225 GHz thermal dust and CO gas emission with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and optical (0.5–0.8 μ m) scattered light with the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS). The Pan-STARRS data show a bipolar distribution of optically scattering dust that is characteristic for disks observed at high inclinations. Its scattered light emission spans ∼14″, with two highly asymmetric filaments extending along the upper bounds of each nebula by ∼9″. The SMA data measure 1.3 mm continuum dust as well as ^12 CO, ^13 CO, and C ^18 O J = 2 − 1 line emission over 12″–14″ extents, with the gas presenting the typical morphology of a disk in Keplerian rotation, in both position–velocity space and in each CO line spectrum. IRAS 23077+6707 has no reported distance estimate, but if it is located in the Cepheus star-forming region (180–800 pc), it would have a radius spanning thousands of astronomical units. Taken together, we infer IRAS 23077+6707 to be a giant and gas-rich edge-on protoplanetary disk, which to our knowledge is the largest in extent so far discovered.

In this study, we performed high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy ( R = 28,000; λ = 0.90–1.35 μ m) with a high signal-to-noise ratio on HD 200775, a very young (∼0.1 Myr old) and massive intermediate-mass star (a binary star with a mass of about 10 M _⊙ each) with a protoplanetary disk. The obtained spectra show eight forbidden lines of three elements: two of [S ii ] (10289 and 10323 Å), two of [N i ] (10400 and 10410 Å), and four of [Fe ii ] (12570, 12946, 12981, and 13209 Å). This is the first time that the [N i ] lines are detected in a young stellar object with a doublet deblended. Gaussian fitting of the spectra indicates that all line profiles have low-velocity components and exhibit blueshifted features, suggesting that all lines originate from the disk winds (magnetohydrodynamic disk wind and/or photoevaporative wind). Based on the fit, the [N i ] and [Fe ii ] lines are categorized into narrow components, while the [S ii ] lines are at the boundary between broad and narrow components. These forbidden lines are suggested to be very promising disk wind tracers among the existing ones because they are in the NIR-wavelength range, which can be observed from early stages with high sensitivities. Among these lines, [N i ] lines would be a rather powerful probe for deriving the basic physical parameters of disk wind gases. However, the study of these lines herein is limited to one object; thus, further studies are needed to examine their properties.

Pre-main-sequence disk accretion is pivotal for determining the final stellar properties and the early conditions for close-in planets. We aim to establish the impact of internal (stellar mass) and external (radiation field) parameters on the disk evolution in the Lagoon Nebula massive star-forming region. We employ simultaneous u , g , r , i , H α time-series photometry, archival infrared data, and high-precision K2 light curves to derive the stellar, disk, and accretion properties for 1012 Lagoon Nebula members. We estimate that of all young stars in the Lagoon Nebula, 34%–37% have inner disks traceable down to ∼12 μ m, while 38%–41% are actively accreting. We detect disks ∼1.5 times more frequently around G, K, and M stars than around higher-mass stars, which appear to deplete their inner disks on shorter timescales. We find tentative evidence for a faster disk evolution in the central regions of the Lagoon Nebula, where the bulk of the O/B population is located. Conversely, disks appear to last longer at the nebula outskirts, where the measured fraction of disk-bearing stars tends to exceed that of accreting and disk-free stars. The derived mass accretion rates show a nonuniform dependence on stellar mass between ∼0.2 and 5 M _⊙ . In addition, the typical accretion rates appear to differ across the Lagoon Nebula extension, with values twice lower in the core region than at its periphery. Finally, we detect tentative radial density gradients in the surface accretion shocks, leading to lags in the appearance of light curve brightness features as a function of wavelength that can amount to ∼7%–30% of the rotation period.

We describe four different approaches for the detection of magnetospheric accretion among Herbig Ae/Be stars with accretion disks. Studies of several unique objects have been carried out. One of the objects is the Herbig Ae star HD101412 with a comparatively strong magnetic field. The second is the early-type Herbig B6e star HD259431. The existence of a magnetosphere in these objects was not recognized earlier. In both cases, a periodicity in the variation of some line parameters, originating near the region of the disk/star interaction, has been found. The third object is the young binary system HD104237, hosting a Herbig Ae star and a T Tauri star. Based on the discovery of periodic variations of equivalent widths of atmospheric lines in the spectrum of the primary, we have concluded that the surface of the star is spotted. Comparing our result with an earlier one, we argue that these spots can be connected with the infall of material from the disk onto the stellar surface through a magnetosphere. The fourth example is the Herbig Ae/Be star HD37806. Signatures of magnetospheric accretion in this object have been identified using a different method. We have selected 337 intermediate- and high-mass young stellar objects (YSOs; 1.5–20 M _⊙ ) well-characterized with spectroscopy. By means of the clustering algorithm HDBSCAN, we study their clustering and association properties in the Gaia DR3 catalog as a function of stellar mass. We find that the lower-mass YSOs (1.5–4 M _⊙ ) have clustering rates of 55%–60% in Gaia astrometric space, a percentage similar to that found in the T Tauri regime. However, intermediate-mass YSOs in the range 4–10 M _⊙ show a decreasing clustering rate with stellar mass, down to 27%. We find tentative evidence suggesting that massive YSOs (>10 M _⊙ ) often (yet not always) appear clustered. We put forward the idea that most massive YSOs form via a mechanism that demands many low-mass stars around them. However, intermediate-mass YSOs form in a classical core-collapse T Tauri way, yet they do not appear often in the clusters around massive YSOs. We also find that intermediate- and high-mass YSOs become less clustered with decreasing disk emission and accretion rate. This points toward an evolution with time. For those sources that appear clustered, no major correlation is found between their stellar properties and the cluster sizes, number of cluster members, cluster densities, or distance to cluster centers. In doing this analysis, we report the identification of 55 new clusters. We tabulated all of the derived cluster parameters for the considered intermediate- and high-mass YSOs.

The accretion of material from protoplanetary disks onto their central stars is a fundamental process in the evolution of these systems and a key diagnostic in constraining the disk lifetime. We analyze the relationship between the stellar accretion rate and the disk mass in 32 intermediate-mass Herbig Ae/Be systems and compare them to their lower-mass counterparts, T Tauri stars. We find that the $\dot{M}$ – M _disk relationship for Herbig Ae/Be stars is largely flat at ∼10 ^−7 M _☉ yr ^−1 over 3 orders of magnitude in dust mass. While most of the sample follows the T Tauri trend, a subset of objects with high accretion rates and low dust masses are identified. These outliers (12 out of 32 sources) have an inferred disk lifetime of less than 0.01 Myr and are dominated by objects with low infrared excess. This outlier sample is likely identified in part by the bias in classifying Herbig Ae/Be stars, which requires evidence of accretion that can only be reliably measured above a rate of ∼10 ^−9 M _☉ yr ^−1 for these spectral types. If the disk masses are not underestimated and the accretion rates are not overestimated, this implies that these disks may be on the verge of dispersal, which may be due to efficient radial drift of material or outer disk depletion by photoevaporation and/or truncation by companions. This outlier sample likely represents a small subset of the larger young, intermediate-mass stellar population, the majority of which would have already stopped accreting and cleared their disks.

The inner regions of protoplanetary disks host many complex physical processes such as star–disk interactions, magnetic fields, planet formation, and the migration of new planets. To study directly this region requires milliarcsecond angular resolution, beyond the diffraction limit of the world's largest optical telescopes and even too small for the millimeter-wave interferometer Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). However, we can use infrared interferometers to image the inner astronomical unit. Here, we present new results from the CHARA and VLTI arrays for the young and luminous Herbig Be star HD 190073. We detect a sub-astronomical unit (sub-AU) cavity surrounded by a ring-like structure that we interpret as the dust destruction front. We model the shape with six radial profiles, three symmetric and three asymmetric, and present a model-free image reconstruction. All the models are consistent with a near face-on disk with an inclination ≲20°, and we measure an average ring radius of 1.4 ± 0.2 mas (1.14 au). Around 48% of the total flux comes from the disk with 15% of that emission appearing to emerge from inside the inner rim. The cause of emission is still unclear, perhaps due to different dust grain compositions or gas emission. The skewed models and the imaging point to an off-center star, possibly due to binarity. Our image shows sub-AU structure, which seems to move between the two epochs inconsistently with Keplerian motion and we discuss possible explanations for this apparent change.

The HH 24 complex harbors five collimated jets emanating from a small protostellar multiple system. We have carried out a multiwavelength study of the jets, their driving sources, and the cloud core hosting the embedded stellar system, based on data from the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, Subaru, Apache Point Observatory 3.5 m, Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescopes. The data show that the multiple system, SSV 63, contains at least 7 sources, ranging in mass from the hydrogen-burning limit to proto-Herbig Ae stars. The stars are in an unstable nonhierarchical configuration, and one member, a borderline brown dwarf, is moving away from the protostellar system with 25 km s ^−1 , after being ejected ∼5800 yr ago as an orphaned protostar. Five of the embedded sources are surrounded by small, possibly truncated, disks resolved at 1.3 mm with ALMA. Proper motions and radial velocities imply jet speeds of 200–300 km s ^−1 . The two main HH 24 jets, E and C, form a bipolar jet system that traces the innermost portions of parsec-scale chains of Herbig–Haro and H _2 shocks with a total extent of at least 3 pc. H _2 CO and C ^18 O observations show that the core has been churned and continuously fed by an infalling streamer. ^13 CO and ^12 CO trace compact, low-velocity, cavity walls carved by the jets and an ultracompact molecular outflow from the most embedded object. Chaotic N -body dynamics likely will eject several more of these objects. The ejection of stars from their feeding zones sets their masses. Dynamical decay of nonhierarchical systems can thus be a major contributor to establishing the initial mass function.

Although the majority of Herbig Ae/Be (HAEBE) stars are likely multiple systems, relatively few multiples have been identified. We aim to create a statistically significant survey of HAEBE multiplicity as a function of stellar mass, to shed light on mixed-mass star formation. Two independent adaptive optics IR imaging surveys were conducted, between 1993 and 2007. A total of 143 stars were observed, including 126 HAEBE stars. These surveys are significantly more sensitive than previous imaging work and, combined with accurate distance and proper-motion data from GAIA Data Release 3, provide a broad survey of intermediate-mass multiplicity. We perform a statistical probability analysis to identify the likely physical companions, and analyze multiepoch observations for common proper motions. We find 250 stellar detections around 88 sample stars. Of these, 70 systems are likely multiple systems, and 42 companions around 29 systems are reported here for the first time. Correcting for completeness, we find a multiplicity fraction of 54%. Multiples are found randomly across all spectral types, but high-order multiples are more common among the hottest stars. Light variability is an essential attribute of young stellar objects (YSOs) at the pre-main-sequence (PMS) stage, which can be treated as an indicator to trace star formation. We present a statistical study on the infrared NEOWISE variability of new and large-sized PMS stars as well as Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) and classical Be (CBe) stars identified from Gaia Data Release 2. A total of 3792 (including 714 HAeBe), 417, and 473 NEOWISE variable sources were detected from the catalog of 8470 PMS (including 1361 HAeBe), 693 CBe, and 1309 uncertain (possibly belonging to either HAeBe or CBe) stars, respectively. We found that 80% of the PMS variables are dominated by irregular infrared variability, whereas variables in the CBe and uncertain categories exhibit comparable contributions from secular (linear, curved, and periodic) and stochastic (burst, drop, and irregular) variables. This, in combination with infrared W1–W2 colors, W4 luminosities, and the spectral energy distribution slope at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths, suggests different evolutionary stages of the PMS (including HAeBe), uncertain, and CBe stars, from less to more evolved. A statistical analysis of variable source properties (e.g., period and fractional amplitude) further reveals a potential sequence possibly associated with disk evolution for different types of light curves (from linear, to curved, periodic, stochastic, and nonvariable stars). Possible mechanisms for the variable sources are suggested to be related to either extinction via circumstellar matter, or contribution of multiple systems surrounding the YSOs, as opposed to variable accretion (e.g., episodic accretion or accretion burst).

Studies of the magnetic fields of Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars can aid in understanding how the magnetic fields of AB stars of intermediate mass are created and evolve. It has been shown that the magnetic fields and magnetic fluxes of HAeBe stars before they emerge on the main sequence are significantly lower than for their successors, main sequence AB stars. In order to explain this mystery, the effect of accretion on Herbig stars and their magnetic fields is studied. Evidence is found in favor of the assumption that in magnetic HAeBe stars with a higher rate of accretion the magnetic fields are lower on the average. However, since the accretion rates fall off exponentially with the age of a star, even if it should be confirmed, this effect cannot fully explain the discontinuous increase in the magnetic fields and magnetic fluxes when HAeBe stars enter the main sequence. Wide-field searches for young stellar objects (YSOs) can place useful constraints on the prevalence of clustered versus distributed star formation. The Spitzer/IRAC Candidate YSO (SPICY) catalog is one of the largest compilations of such objects (∼120,000 candidates in the Galactic midplane). Many SPICY candidates are spatially clustered, but, perhaps surprisingly, approximately half the candidates appear spatially distributed. To better characterize this unexpected population and confirm its nature, we obtained Palomar/DBSP spectroscopy for 26 of the optically bright ( G < 15 mag) “isolated” YSO candidates. We confirm the YSO classifications of all 26 sources based on their positions on the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, H and Ca ii line emission from over half the sample, and robust detection of infrared excesses. Results of our spectral monitoring of the Herbig Ae star HD190073 during 2009-2017 at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory are presented. Over this time, 116 spectra were obtained in the region of the Hα line and 61 in the region of the HeI and NaI D lines. It was found that the parameters of the circumstellar lines are variable and at least three separate components of the variability can be identified: (a) night to night, (b) interseasonal (τ tens of days), (c) slow (τ years). We assume that the interseasonal variability may be related to modulation of the rotational profiles of the star with a period of about 40 days, while the slow variations may be influenced by a hypothetical binarity of the object, direct signs of which have not yet been been discovered. We confirm that the complicated multicomponent structure of the blue absorption components of the Ca II doublet absorption lines, which have already been discussed for several decades, is also observed in the Hα and NaI D2 lines. These features of these lines are presumably related to the existence of a magnetic field with a complicated configuration in this object. The characteristics of this configuration remain unknown and should be the subject of future investigations. We also assume that the sudden changes in the parameters of the lines after JD2455700 may be related to a transformation in the magnetic field of HD190073 predicted previously in the literature. We believe that further studies of this object should include: (a) repeated direct spectropolarimetric measurements of the magnetic field, (b) a search for cyclicity in measurements of the parameters of the profiles of its lines on a time scale of tens of days (owing to rotational modulation) to several years (traces of the presence of a second component), and (c) a study of the variability of other circumstellar lines formed in the wind (e.g., the FeII (42) triplet line). Here, we analyse the character of the turbulence of the Huygens region in the Orion Nebula (M 42) using structure functions. We compute the second-order structure function of a high-resolution velocity map in H α obtained through the MUSE instrument. Ours is one of the few works that follows a mathematically sound methodology for calculating the second-order structure function of astronomical velocity fields. Because of that, our results will be useful for future comparisons with other studies of M 42 or other regions. We first analyse the probability distribution function and found it consistent with those resulting from numerical simulations of solenoidal turbulence. After a further analysis of the data, we found two possible separate motions or at least regimes in the region. This is confirmed later through the calculation of several filtered structure functions. We found that the turbulence in the Huygens region is between the Kolmogorov regime (S 2 ∝ δ r 2/3) and the Burgers regime (S 2 ∝ δ r). We found that the turbulence in the region consists of two flow regimes that reproduce a generalized Larson's Law, S 2 ∼ δ r 0.74−0.76. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an analysis of radio (Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA)), optical (Hubble Space Telescope (HST)), and X-ray (Chandra and XMM–Newton) observations and archival data of the Herbig–Haro objects HH 80 and HH 81 in the context of jet–cloud interactions. Our radio images are the highest angular resolution to date of these objects, allowing to spatially resolve the knots and compare the regions emitting in the different spectral ranges. We found that soft X-ray thermal emission is located ahead of the non-thermal radio peak. This result is consistent with a radiative forward shock that heats the shocked gas up to 106 K, and an adiabatic reverse shock able to accelerate particles and produce synchrotron radiation detectable at radio frequencies. These high angular resolution radio images also reveal a bow shock structure in the case of HH 80N, with it being the first time this morphology is detected in a Herbig–Haro object at these frequencies. Understanding how young stars gain their masses through disk-to-star accretion is of paramount importance in astrophysics. It affects our knowledge about the early stellar evolution, the disk lifetime and dissipation processes, the way the planets form on the smallest scales, or the connection to macroscopic parameters characterizing star-forming regions on the largest ones, among others. In turn, mass accretion rate estimates depend on the accretion paradigm assumed. For low-mass T Tauri stars with strong magnetic fields there is consensus that magnetospheric accretion (MA) is the driving mechanism, but the transfer of mass in massive young stellar objects with weak or negligible magnetic fields probably occurs directly from the disk to the star through a hot boundary layer (BL). The intermediate-mass Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars bridge the gap between both previous regimes and are still optically visible during the pre-main sequence phase, thus constituting a unique opportunity to test a possible change of accretion mode from MA to BL. This review deals with our estimates of accretion rates in HAeBes, critically discussing the different accretion paradigms. It shows that although mounting evidence supports that MA may extend to late-type HAes but not to early-type HBes, there is not yet a consensus on the validity of this scenario versus the BL one. Based on MA and BL shock modeling, it is argued that the ultraviolet regime could significantly contribute in the future to discriminating between these competing accretion scenarios.

Context. Infrared and (sub-)millimeter observations of disks around T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars point to a chemical differentiation, with a lower detection rate of molecules in disks around hotter stars. Aims. We aim to investigate the underlying causes of the chemical differentiation indicated by observations and perform a comparative study of the chemistry of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be disks. This is one of the first studies to compare the chemistry in the outer regions of these two types of disk. Methods. We developed a model to compute the chemical composition of a generic protoplanetary disk, with particular attention to the photochemistry, and applied it to a T Tauri and a Herbig Ae/Be disk. We compiled cross sections and computed photodissociation and photoionization rates at each location in the disk by solving the far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiative transfer in a 1+1D approach using the Meudon PDR code and adopting observed stellar spectra. Results. The warmer disk temperatures and higher ultraviolet flux of Herbig stars compared to T Tauri stars induce some differences in the disk chemistry. In the hot inner regions, H2O, and simple organic molecules like C2H2, HCN, and CH4 are predicted to be very abundant in T Tauri disks and even more in Herbig Ae/Be disks, in contrast with infrared observations that find a much lower detection rate of water and simple organics toward disks around hotter stars. In the outer regions, the model indicates that the molecules typically observed in disks, like HCN, CN, C2H, H2CO, CS, SO, and HCO+, do not have drastic abundance differences between T Tauri and Herbig Ae disks. Some species produced under the action of photochemistry, like C2H and CN, are predicted to have slightly lower abundances around Herbig Ae stars due to a narrowing of the photochemically active layer. Observations indeed suggest that these radicals are somewhat less abundant in Herbig Ae disks, although in any case, the inferred abundance differences are small, of a factor of a few at most. A clear chemical differentiation between both types of disks concerns ices. Owing to the warmer temperatures of Herbig Ae disks, one expects snow lines lying farther away from the star and a lower mass of ices compared to T Tauri disks. Conclusions. The global chemical behavior of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be disks is quite similar. The main differences are driven by the warmer temperatures of the latter, which result in a larger reservoir or water and simple organics in the inner regions and a lower mass of ices in the outer disk. Context. In planet-forming disks, deuterated species like DCO+ often show up in rings. Two chemical formation routes contribute: cold deuteration at temperatures below 30 K and warm deuteration at temperatures up to 80 K. Aims. We aim to reproduce the DCO+ emission in the disk around HD163296 using a simple 2D chemical model for the formation of DCO+ through the cold deuteration channel and a parametric treatment of the warm deuteration channel. Methods. We use data from ALMA in band 6 to obtain a resolved spectral imaging data cube of the DCO+ J = 3-2 line in HD163296 with a synthesized beam of 0′′.53 × 0′′.42. We adopt a physical structure of the disk from the literature that reproduces the spectral energy distribution.We then apply a simplified chemical network for the formation of DCO+ that uses the physical structure of the disk as parameters along with a CO abundance profile, a constant HD abundance, and a constant ionization rate.We model the contribution of the warm deuteration channel with two parameters: an effective activation temperature and a constant abundance. Finally, from the resulting DCO+ abundances, we calculate the non-LTE emission using the 3D radiative transfer code LIME. Results. The observed DCO+ emission is reproduced by a model with cold deuteration producing abundances up to 1.6 × 10-11. Warm deuteration, at a constant abundance of 3.2 × 10-12, becomes fully effective below 32 K and tapers off at higher temperatures, reproducing the lack of DCO+ inside 90 AU. Throughout the DCO+ emitting zone a CO abundance of 2 × 10-7 is found, with ~99% of it frozen out below 19 K. At radii where both cold and warm deuteration are active, warm deuteration contributes up to 20% of DCO+, consistent with detailed chemical models. The decrease in DCO+ at large radii is attributed to a temperature inversion at 250 AU, which raises temperatures above values where cold deuteration operates. Increased photodesorption may also limit the radial extent of DCO+. The corresponding return of the DCO+ layer to the midplane, together with a radially increasing ionization fraction, reproduces the local DCO+ emission maximum at ~260 AU. Conclusions. We can successfully reproduce the observed morphology of DCO+ at large radii by only considering the dependence on temperature in the chemical reactions that produce it. Predictions on the location of DCO+ within the disk from simple models depend strongly on the gas temperature. Outer disk temperature inversions, expected when grains decouple from the gas and drift inward, can lead to secondary maxima in DCO+ emission and a reduction of its radial extent. Context. Eruptive variables are young stars that show episodic variations of brightness: EXors/FUors variations are commonly associated with enhanced accretion outbursts occurring at intermittent cadence of months/years (EXors) and decades/centuries (FUors). Variations that can be ascribed to a variable extinction along their line of sight are instead classified as UXors. Aims. We aim at investigating the long-term photometric behaviour of three sources classified as eruptive variables. We present data from the archival plates of the Asiago Observatory relative to the fields where the targets are located. For the sake of completeness we have also analysed the Harvard plates of the same regions that cover a much longer historical period, albeit at a lower sensitivity, however we are only able to provide upper limits. Methods. A total of 273 Asiago plates were investigated, providing a total of more than 200 magnitudes for the three stars, which cover a period of about 34 yr between 1958 and 1991. We have compared our data with more recently collected literature data. Results. Our plates analysis of V2492 Cyg provides historical upper limits that seem not to be compatible with the level of the activity monitored during the last decade. Therefore, recently observed accretion phenomena could be associated with the outbursting episodes, more than repetitive obscuration. While a pure extinction does not seem the only mechanism responsible for the ASASSN-15qi fluctuations, it can account quite reasonably for the recent V350 Cep variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been proposed, or confirmed, that diamond nanoparticles exist in various environments in space: close to active galactic nuclei, in the vicinity of supernovae and pulsars, in the interior of several planets in the Solar system, in carbon planets, and other exoplanets, carbonrich stars, meteorites, in X-ray active Herbig Ae/Be stars, and in the interstellar medium. Using density functional theory methods, we calculate the carbon K-edge X-ray absorption spectrum of two large tetrahedral nanodiamonds: C26H32 and C51H52. We also study and test our methods on the astrophysical molecule CH4, the smallest C--H tetrahedral structure. A possible detection of nanodiamonds from X-ray spectra by future telescopes, such as the project Arcus, is proposed. Simulated spectra of the diffuse interstellar medium using Cyg X-2 as a source show that nanodiamonds studied in this work can be detected by Arcus, a high-resolution X-ray spectrometer mission selected by NASA for a Phase A concept study. The primary star in the young stellar object binary CO Ori displays UX Ori-type variability: irregular, high amplitude optical, and near-infrared photometric fluctuations where flux minima coincide with polarization maxima. This is attributed to changes in local opacity. In CO Ori A, these variations exhibit a 12.4 yr cycle. Here, we investigate the physical origin of the fluctuating opacity and its periodicity using interferometric observations of CO Ori obtained using VLTI/GRAVITY. Continuum K-band circum-primary and circum-secondary emission are marginally spatially resolved for the first time, while Brγ emission is detected in the spectrum of the secondary. We estimate a spectral type range for CO Ori B of K2–K5 assuming visual extinction, AV = 2 and a distance of 430 pc. From geometric modelling of the continuum visibilities, the circum-primary emission is consistent with a central point source plus a Gaussian component with a full width at half-maximum of 2.31 ± 0.04 mas, inclined at 30.2° ± 2.2° and with a major axis position angle of 40° ± 6°. This inclination is lower than that reported for the discs of other UX Ori-type stars, providing a first indication that the UX Ori phenomena may arise through fluctuations in circum-stellar material exterior to a disc, for example, in a dusty outflow. An additional wide, symmetric Gaussian component is required to fit the visibilities of CO Ori B, signifying a contribution from scattered light. Finally, closure phases of CO Ori A were used to investigate whether the 12.4 yr periodicity is associated with an undetected third component, as has been previously suggested. We rule out any additional companions contributing more than 3.6 per cent to the K-band flux within ∼7.3–20 mas of CO Ori A. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present new data of the protoplanetary disc surrounding the Herbig Ae/Be star HD169142 obtained in the very broad-band (VBB) with the Zurich imaging polarimeter (ZIMPOL), a subsystem of the Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch instrument (SPHERE) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Our Polarimetric Differential Imaging (PDI) observations probe the disc as close as 0.03 arcsec (3.5 au) to the star and are able to trace the disc out to ∼1.08 arcsec (∼126 au).We find an inner hole, a bright ring bearing substructures around 0.18 arcsec (21 au), and an elliptically shaped gap stretching from 0.25 to 0.47 arcsec (29–55 au). Outside of 0.47 arcsec, the surface brightness drops off, discontinued only by a narrow annular brightness minimum at ∼0.63 to 0.74 arcsec (74–87 au). These observations confirm features found in less-well-resolved data as well as reveal yet undetected indications for planet-disc interactions, such as small-scale structures, star–disc offsets, and potentially moving shadows. Context. Transition disks offer the extraordinary opportunity to look for newly born planets and to investigate the early stages of planet formation. Aims. In this context we observed the Herbig A5 star MWC 758 with the L'-band vector vortex coronagraph installed in the nearinfrared camera and spectrograph NIRC2 at the Keck II telescope, with the aim of unveiling the nature of the spiral structure by constraining the presence of planetary companions in the system. Methods. Our high-contrast imaging observations show a bright (▵ L' = 7:0 ± 0:3 mag) point-like emission south of MWC 758 at a deprojected separation of ∼20 au (r = 0: 00111 ± 0: 00004) from the central star. We also recover the two spiral arms (southeast and northwest), already imaged by previous studies in polarized light, and discover a third arm to the southwest of the star. No additional companions were detected in the system down to 5 Jupiter masses beyond 0: 006 from the star. Results. We propose that the bright L0-band emission could be caused by the presence of an embedded and accreting protoplanet, although the possibility of it being an asymmetric disk feature cannot be excluded. The spiral structure is probably not related to the protoplanet candidate, unless on an inclined and eccentric orbit and it could be due to one (or more) yet undetected planetary companions at the edge of or outside the spiral pattern. Future observations and additional simulations will be needed to shed light on the true nature of the point-like source and its link with the spiral arms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results are reported from a spectroscopic study of the Herbig Ae/Be star HD 37806 from 2009 through 2017 using high resolution spectrographs at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory and the OAN SPM Observatory in Mexico. 72 spectra of this object near the Hα, Hβ, HeI 5876 and D NaI lines are analyzed. The following results were obtained: 1. The type of spectral profile of the Hα line can change from P Cyg III to double emission and vice versa over a time scale on the order of a month. 2. Narrow absorption components are observed in the profiles of the Hα and D NaI lines with radial velocities that vary over a characteristic time on the order of a day. 3. On some days, the profiles of the Hβ, HeI 5876, and D NaI lines show signs of accretion of matter to the star with a characteristic lifetime of a few days. A possible interpretation of these phenomena was considered. The transformation of the Hα profile may be related to a change in the outer latitudinal width of the boundary of the wind zone. The narrow variable absorption lines may be caused by the rotation of local azimuthal inhomogeneities in the wind zone owing to the interaction of the disk with the star’s magnetosphere in a propeller regime. Several current theoretical papers that predict the formation of similar inhomogeneous wind structures were examined. It is suggested that the episodes with signs of accretion in the spectral line profiles cannot be a consequence of the modulation of these profiles by the star’s rotation but are more likely caused by sudden, brief changes in the accretion rate. These spectral observations of HD 37806 should be continued in a search for cyclical variability in the spectral parameters in order to identify direct signs of magnetospheric accretion and detect possible binary behavior in this object. We measured mid-infrared polarization of protoplanetary discs to gain new insight into their magnetic fields. Using CanariCam at the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias, we detected linear polarization at 8.7, 10.3 and 12.5 μm from discs around eight Herbig Ae/Be stars and one T-Tauri star. We analysed polarimetric properties of each object to find out the most likely interpretation of the data. While the observed mid-infrared polarization from most objects is consistent with polarized emission and/or absorption arising from aligned dust particles, we cannot rule out polarization due to dust scattering for a few objects in our sample. For those objects for which polarization can be explained by polarized emission and/or absorption, we examined how the derived magnetic field structure correlates with the disc position angle and inclination. We found no preference for a certain type of magnetic field. Instead, various configurations (toroidal, poloidal or complex) are inferred from the observations. The detection rate (64 per cent) of polarized mid-infrared emission and/or absorption supports the expectation that magnetic fields and suitable conditions for grain alignment are common in protoplanetary discs around Herbig Ae/Be stars. Context. An essential step to understanding protoplanetary evolution is the study of disks that contain gaps or inner holes. The pre-transitional disk around the Herbig star HD 169142 exhibits multi-gap disk structure, differentiated gas and dust distribution, planet candidates, and near-infrared fading in the past decades, which make it a valuable target for a case study of disk evolution. Aims. Using near-infrared interferometric observations with VLTI/PIONIER, we aim to study the dust properties in the inner sub-au region of the disk in the years 2011-2013, when the object is already in its near-infrared faint state. Methods. We first performed simple geometric modeling to characterize the size and shape of the NIR-emitting region. We then performed Monte-Carlo radiative transfer simulations on grids of models and compared the model predictions with the interferometric and photometric observations. Results. We find that the observations are consistent with optically thin gray dust lying at Rin ~ 0.07 au, passively heated to T ~ 1500 K. Models with sub-micron optically thin dust are excluded because such dust will be heated to much higher temperatures at similar distance. The observations can also be reproduced with a model consisting of optically thick dust at Rin ~ 0.06 au, but this model is plausible only if refractory dust species enduring ~ 2400 K exist in the inner disk. We present Hα linear spectropolarimetry of a large sample of Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with newly obtained data for 17 objects, the sample contains 56 objects, the largest such sample to date. A change in linear polarization across the Hα line is detected in 42 (75 per cent) objects, which confirms the previous finding that the circumstellar environment around these stars on small spatial scales has an asymmetric structure, which is typically identified with a disc. A second outcome of this research is that we confirm that Herbig Ae stars are similar to T Tauri stars in displaying a line polarization effect, while depolarization is more common among Herbig Be stars. This finding had been suggested previously to indicate that Herbig Ae stars form in the same manner than T Tauri stars through magnetospheric accretion. It appears that the transition between these two differing polarization line effects occurs around the B7-B8 spectral type. This would in turn not only suggest that Herbig Ae stars accrete in a similar fashion as lower mass stars, but also that this accretion mechanism switches to a different type of accretion for Herbig Be stars. We report that the magnitude of the line effect caused by electron scattering close to the stars does not exceed 2 per cent. Only a very weak correlation is found between the magnitude of the line effect and the spectral type or the strength of the Hα line. This indicates that the detection of a line effect only relies on the geometry of the line-forming region and the geometry of the scattering electrons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The circumstellar environments of Herbig Be stars in the far-infrared are poorly characterised, mainly because they are often embedded and rather distant. The analysis of far-infrared spectroscopy allows us to make a major step forward by covering multiple rotational lines of molecules, e.g. CO, that are useful probes of the physical conditions of the gas. Aims. We characterise the gas and dust in the discs and environments of Herbig Be stars, and we compare the results with those of their lower-mass counterparts, the Herbig Ae stars. Methods. We report and analyse far-infrared observations of two Herbig Be stars, R Mon and PDS 27, obtained with the Herschel instruments PACS and SPIRE. We construct spectral energy distributions and derive the infrared excess. We extract line fluxes from the PACS and SPIRE spectra and construct rotational diagrams in order to estimate the excitation temperature of the gas. We derive CO, [O I] and [C I] luminosities to determine the physical conditions of the gas, and the dominant cooling mechanism. Results. We confirm that the Herbig Be stars are surrounded by remnants from their parental clouds, with an IR excess that mainly originates in a disc. In R Mon we detect [O I], [C I], [C II], CO (26 transitions), water and OH, while in PDS 27 we only detect [C I] and CO (8 transitions). We attribute the absence of OH and water in PDS 27 to UV photo-dissociation and photo-evaporation. From the rotational diagrams, we find several components for CO; we derive Trot949 ± 90 K, 358 ± 20 K and 77 ± 12 K for R Mon; 96 ± 12 K and 31 ± 4 K for PDS 27; and 25 ± 8 K and 27 ± 6 K for their respective compact neighbours. The forsterite feature at 69 μm was not detected in either of the sources, probably due to the lack of (warm) crystalline dust in a flat disc. We find that cooling by molecules is dominant in the Herbig Be stars, while this is not the case in Herbig Ae stars where cooling by [O I] dominates. Moreover, we show that in the Herbig Be star R Mon, outflow shocks are the dominant gas heating mechanism, while in Herbig Ae stars it is stellar. Conclusions. The outflow of R Mon contributes to the observed line emission by heating the gas in the central spaxel/beam covering the disc and in the immediate surroundings, as well as in those spaxels/beams covering the parabolic shell around it. PDS 27, a B2 star, has dispersed a large part of its gas content and/or destroyed molecules; this is likely given its intense UV field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The gas and dust in circumstellar disks provide the raw materials to form planets. The study of organic molecules and their building blocks in such disks offers insight into the origin of the prebiotic environment of terrestrial planets. Aims: We aim to determine the distribution of formaldehyde, H2CO, in the disk around HD 163296 to assess the contribution of gas- and solid-phase formation routes of this simple organic. Methods: Three formaldehyde lines were observed (H2CO 303-202, H2CO 322-221, and H2CO 321-220) in the protoplanetary disk around the Herbig Ae star HD 163296 with ALMA at 0.5" (60 AU) spatial resolution. Different parameterizations of the H2CO abundance were compared to the observed visibilities, using either a characteristic temperature, a characteristic radius or a radial power law index to describe the H2CO chemistry. Similar models were applied to ALMA Science Verification data of C18O. In each scenario, χ2 minimization on the visibilities was used to determine the best-fit model in each scenario. Results: H2CO 303-202 was readily detected via imaging, while the weaker H2CO 322-221 and H2CO 321-220 lines required matched filter analysis to detect. H2CO is present throughout most of the gaseous disk, extending out to 550 AU. An apparent 50 AU inner radius of the H2CO emission is likely caused by an optically thick dust continuum. The H2CO radial intensity profile shows a peak at 100 AU and a secondary bump at 300 AU, suggesting increased production in the outer disk. In all modeling scenarios, fits to the H2CO data show an increased abundance in the outer disk. The overall best-fit H2CO model shows a factor of two enhancement beyond a radius of 270 ± 20 AU, with an inner abundance (relative to H2) of 2 - 5 × 10-12. The H2CO emitting region has a lower limit on the kinetic temperature of T> 20 K. The C18O modeling suggests an order of magnitude depletion of C18O in the outer disk and an abundance of 4 - 12 × 10-8 in the inner disk. Conclusions: There is a desorption front seen in the H2CO emission that roughly coincides with the outer edge of the 1.3 millimeter continuum. The increase in H2CO outer disk emission could be a result of hydrogenation of CO ices on dust grains that are then sublimated via thermal desorption or UV photodesorption. Alternatively, there could be more efficient gas-phase production of H2CO beyond 300 AU if CO is photodisocciated in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Optical and infrared variability surveys produce a large number of high quality light curves. Statistical pattern recognition methods have provided competitive solutions for variable star classification at a relatively low computational cost. In order to perform supervised classification, a set of features is proposed and used to train an automatic classification system. Quantities related to the magnitude density of the light curves and their Fourier coefficients have been chosen as features in previous studies. However, some of these features are not robust to the presence of outliers and the calculation of Fourier coefficients is computationally expensive for large data sets. Aims. We propose and evaluate the performance of a new robust set of features using supervised classifiers in order to look for new Be star candidates in the OGLE-IV Gaia south ecliptic pole field. Methods. We calculated the proposed set of features on six types of variable stars and also on a set of Be star candidates reported in the literature. We evaluated the performance of these features using classification trees and random forests along with the K-nearest neighbours, support vector machines, and gradient boosted trees methods. We tuned the classifiers with a 10-fold cross-validation and grid search. We then validated the performance of the best classifier on a set of OGLE-IV light curves and applied this to find new Be star candidates. Results. The random forest classifier outperformed the others. By using the random forest classifier and colours criteria we found 50 Be star candidates in the direction of the Gaia south ecliptic pole field, four of which have infrared colours that are consistent with Herbig Ae/Be stars. Conclusions. Supervised methods are very useful in order to obtain preliminary samples of variable stars extracted from large databases. As usual, the stars classified as Be stars candidates must be checked for the colours and spectroscopic characteristics expected for them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present high-resolution (0.4 arcsec) mid-infrared (mid-IR) polarimetric images and spectra of WL 16, a Herbig Ae star at a distance of 125 pc. WL 16 is surrounded by a protoplanetary disc of ~900 au in diameter, making it one of the most extended Herbig Ae/Be discs as seen in the mid-IR. The star is behind, or embedded in, the ρ Ophiuchus molecular cloud, and obscured by 28 mag of extinction at optical wavelengths by the foreground cloud. Mid-IR polarization ofWL 16mainly arises from aligned elongated dust grains present along the line of sight, suggesting a uniform morphology of polarization vectors with an orientation of 33°(east from north) and a polarization fraction of ~2.0 per cent. This orientation is consistent with previous polarimetric surveys in the optical and near-IR bands to probe large-scale magnetic fields in the Ophiuchus star formation region, indicating that the observed mid-IR polarization towards WL 16 is produced by the dichroic absorption of magnetically aligned foreground dust grains by a uniform magnetic field. Using polarizations of WL 16 and Elias 29, a nearby polarization standard star, we constrain the polarization efficiency, p10.3/A10.3, for the dust grains in the ρ Ophiuchus molecular cloud to be ≃1.0 per cent mag-1. WL 16 has polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features detected at 8.6, 11.2, 12.0, and 12.7 μm by our spectroscopic data, and we find an anticorrelation between the PAH surface brightness and the PAH ionization fraction between the north-west and south-west sides of the disc. The Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes) allow an exploration of the properties of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars above the low-mass range (<2Mʘ) and those bordering the high-mass range (>8Mʘ). This paper is the second in a series exploring accretion in 91 HAeBes with Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectra. Equivalent width measurements are carried out on 32 different lines, spanning the UV (ultraviolet) to NIR (near infrared), in order to obtain their line luminosities. The line luminosities were compared to accretion luminosities that were determined directly from measurements of a UV excess. When detected, emission lines always demonstrate a correlation with the accretion luminosity, regardless of detection frequency. The average relationship between accretion luminosity and line luminosity is found to be Lacc ∝ Lline1.16 ± 0.15. This is in agreement with the findings in Classical T Tauri stars, although the HAeBe relationship is generally steeper, particularly towards the Herbig Be mass range. Since all observed lines display a correlation with the accretion luminosity, all of them can be used as accretion tracers. This has increased the number of accretion diagnostic lines in HAeBes 10-fold. However, questions still remain on the physical origin of each line, which may not be due to accretion. This work presents CHARA/VEGA Ha spectro-interferometry (R ~ 6000, and λ/2B ~ 1 mas) of HD 179218 and HD 141569, doubling the sample of Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars for which this type of observations is available so far. The observed Hα emission is spatially unresolved, indicating that the size of the Hα emitting region is smaller than ~0.21 and 0.12 au for HD 179218 and HD 141529 (~15 and 16 R*, respectively). This is smaller than for the two other HAeBes previously observed with the same instrumentation. Two different scenarios have been explored in order to explain the compact line emitting regions. A hot, several thousand K, blackbody disc is consistent with the observations of HD 179218 and HD 141569. Magnetospheric accretion (MA) is able to reproduce the bulk of the Hα emission shown by HD 179218, confirming previous estimates from MA shock modelling with a mass accretion rate of 10-8 M⊙ yr-1, and an inclination to the line of sight between 30° and 50°. The Hα profile of HD 141569 cannot be fitted from MA due to the high rotational velocity of this object. Putting the CHARA sample together, a variety of scenarios is required to explain the Hα emission in HAeBe stars - compact or extended, discs, accretion, and winds - in agreement with previous Brγ spectro-interferometric observations. Context. Gaps, cavities, and rings in circumstellar disks are signposts of disk evolution and planet-disk interactions. We follow the recent suggestion that Herbig Ae/Be disks with a flared disk harbor a cavity, and investigate the disk around HD 97048. Aims. We aim to resolve the 34 ± 4 AU central cavity that has been predicted and to investigate the structure of the disk. Methods. We imaged the disk around HD 97048 using ALMA at 0.85 mm and 2.94 mm and ATCA (multiple frequency) observations. Our observations also include the 12CO J = 1-0, 12CO J = 3-2 and HCO+ J = 4-3 emission lines. Results. A central cavity in the disk around HD 97048 is resolved with a 40-46 AU radius. Additional radial structure present in the surface brightness profile can be accounted for either by an opacity gap at 90 AU or by an additional emitting ring at 150 AU. The continuum emission tracing the dust in the disk is detected out to 355 AU. The 12CO J = 3-2 disk is detected 2.4 times farther out. The 12CO emission can be traced down to ≈10 AU scales. Apparent non-Keplerian kinematics are detected inside the cavity on the HCO+ J = 4-3 velocity map. The mm spectral index measured from ATCA observations suggests that grain growth has occurred in the HD 97048 disk. Finally, we resolve a highly inclined disk out to 150 AU around the nearby 0.5 M⊙ binary ISO-ChaI 126. Conclusions. The data presented here reveal a cavity in the disk of HD 97048, and prominent radial structure in the surface brightness. The cavity size varies for different continuum frequencies and gas tracers. The gas inside the cavity follows non-Keplerian kinematics seen in HCO+ emission. The variable cavity size along with the kinematical signature suggests the presence of a substellar companion or a massive planet inside the cavity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of spectropolarimetric observations of 12 Herbig Ae/Be objects. Our data have the largest spectropolarimetric wavelength coverage, 4560-9480 Å, published to date. A change in linear polarization across the H α line, is detected in all objects. Such a line effect reveals the fact that stellar photons are scattered off free electrons that are not distributed in a spherically symmetric volume, suggesting the presence of small discs around these accreting objects. Thanks to the large wavelength coverage, we can report that H α is the spectral line in the optical wavelength range that is most sensitive to revealing deviations from spherical symmetry, and the one most likely to show a line effect across the polarization in such cases. Few other spectral lines display changes in polarization across the line. In addition, H α is the only line which shows an effect across its absorption component in some sources. We present a scenario explaining this finding and demonstrate that the detection of the line effect strongly relies on the number of photons scattered into our line of sight. We highlight the special case of R Mon, which is the only object in our sample to show many lines with a polarization effect, which is much stronger than in all other objects. Given that the object and its nebulosity is spatially resolved, we argue that this is due to scattering of the stellar and emission spectrum off circumstellar dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The presence or absence of ice in protoplanetary disks is of great importance to the formation of planets. By enhancing solid surface density and increasing sticking effciency, ice catalyzes the rapid formation of planetesimals and decreases the timescale of giant planet core accretion. Aims. In this paper, we analyze the composition of the outer disk around the Herbig star HD 142527. We focus on the composition of water ice, but also analyze the abundances of previously proposed minerals. Methods.We present new Herschel far-infrared spectra and a re-reduction of archival data from the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We modeled the disk using full 3D radiative transfer to obtain the disk structure. Also, we used an optically thin analysis of the outer disk spectrum to obtain firm constraints on the composition of the dust component. Results. The water ice in the disk around HD 142527 contains a large reservoir of crystalline water ice. We determine the local abundance of water ice in the outer disk (i.e., beyond 130AU). The re-reduced ISO spectrum di ers significantly from that previously published, but matches the new Herschel spectrum at their common wavelength range. In particular, we do not detect any significant contribution from carbonates or hydrous silicates, in contrast to earlier claims. Conclusions. The amount of water ice detected in the outer disk requires ~80% of oxygen atoms. This is comparable to the water ice abundance in the outer solar system, comets, and dense interstellar clouds. The water ice is highly crystalline while the temperatures where we detect it are too low to crystallize the water on relevant timescales. We discuss the implications of this finding. Due to the knowledge of the rotation period and the presence of a rather strong surface magnetic field, the sharp-lined young Herbig Ae star HD 101412 with a rotation period of 42 d has become one of the most well-studied targets among the Herbig Ae stars. High-resolution HARPS polarimetric spectra of HD 101412 were recently obtained on seven different epochs. Our study of the spectral variability over the part of the rotation cycle covered by HARPS observations reveals that the line profiles of the elements Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Sr are clearly variable while He exhibits variability that is opposite to the behaviour of the other elements studied. Since classical Ap stars usually show a relationship between the magnetic field geometry and the distribution of element spots, we used in our magnetic field measurements different line samples belonging to the three elements with the most numerous spectral lines, Ti, Cr, and Fe. Over the time interval covered by the available spectra, the longitudinal magnetic field changes sign from negative to positive polarity. The distribution of field values obtained using Ti, Cr, and Fe lines is, however, completely different compared to the magnetic field values determined in previous low-resolution FORS 2 measurements, where hydrogen Balmer lines are the main contributors to the magnetic field measurements, indicating the presence of concentration of the studied iron-peak elements in the region of the magnetic equator. Spatially resolving the inner dust cavity (or gap) of the so-called (pre-)transitional disks is a key to understanding the connection between the processes of planetary formation and disk dispersal. The disk around the Herbig star HD139614 is of particular interest since it presents a pretransitional nature with an au-sized gap structure that is spatially resolved by mid-infrared interferometry in the dust distribution. With the aid of new near-infrared interferometric observations, we aim to characterize the 0.1-10 au region of the HD 139614 disk further and then identify viable mechanisms for the inner disk clearing. We report the first multiwavelength modeling of the interferometric data acquired on HD 139614 with the VLTI instruments PIONIER, AMBER, and MIDI, complemented by Herschel/PACS photometric measurements. We first performed a geometrical modeling of the new near-infrared interferometric data, followed by radiative transfer modeling of the complete dataset using the code RADMC3D. We confirm the presence of a gap structure in the warm µm-sized dust distribution, extending from about 2.5 au to 6 au, and constrained the properties of the inner dust component: e.g., a radially increasing dust surface density profile, and a depletion in dust of ~10³ relative to the outer disk. Since selfshadowing and photoevaporation appears unlikely to be responsible for the au-sized gap of HD 139614, we thus tested if dynamical clearing could be a viable mechanism using hydrodynamical simulations to predict the structure of the gaseous disk. Indeed, a narrow au-sized gap is consistent with the expected effect of the interaction between a single giant planet and the disk. Assuming that small dust grains are well coupled to the gas, we found that an approximately 3 Mjup planet located at ~4.5 au from the star could, in less than 1 Myr, reproduce most of the aspects of the dust surface density profile, while no significant depletion (in gas) occurred in the inner disk, in contrast to the dust. However, this "dust-depleted" inner disk could be explained by the expected dust filtration by the gap and the efficient dust growth/fragmentation occurring in the inner disk regions. Our results support the hypothesis of a giant planet opening a gap and shaping the inner region of the HD 139614 disk. Herbig Ae/Be objects are pre-main sequence stars surrounded by gas- and dust-rich circumstellar discs. These objects are in the throes of star and planet formation, and their characterisation informs us of the processes and outcomes of planet formation processes around intermediate mass stars. Here we analyse the spectral energy distributions of disc host stars observed by the Herschel open time key programme “Gas in Protoplanetary Systems”. We present Herschel/PACS far-infrared imaging observations of 22 Herbig Ae/Bes and 5 debris discs, combined with ancillary photometry spanning ultraviolet to sub-millimetre wavelengths. From these measurements we determine the diagnostics of disc evolution, along with the total excess, in three regimes spanning near-, mid-, and far-infrared wavelengths. Using appropriate statistical tests, these diagnostics are examined for correlations. We find that the far-infrared flux, where the disc becomes optically thin, is correlated with the millimetre flux, which provides a measure of the total dust mass. The ratio of far-infrared to sub-millimetre flux is found to be greater for targets with discs that are brighter at millimetre wavelengths and that have steeper sub-millimetre slopes. Furthermore, discs with flared geometry have, on average, larger excesses than flat geometry discs. Finally, we estimate the extents of these discs (or provide upper limits) from the observations. There is much evidence that planet formation is occurring in the disc around the Herbig Be star HD100546. To learn more about the processes occurring in this disc, we conducted high-resolution imaging at 43/45 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Multiple array configurations were used, providing a best spatial resolution of ~0.15 arcsec, or 15 au at HD100546's distance of ~100 pc. Significant structure is revealed, but its precise form is dependent on the u - v plane sampling used for the image reconstruction. At a resolution of ≤30 au, we detected an inner gap in the disc with a radius of ~25 au and a position angle approximately along the known disc major axis. With different weighting, and an achieved resolution of ~15 au, emission appears at the centre and the disc takes on the shape of an incomplete ring, much like a horseshoe, again with a gap radius of ~25 au. The position angle of the disc major axis and its inclination from face-on are determined to be 140° ± 5° and 40° ± 5°, respectively. The ~25 au gap radius is confirmed by a null in the real part of the binned visibilities at 320 ± 10 kλ, whilst the non-axisymmetric nature is also confirmed through significant structure in the imaginary component. The emission mechanism at the central peak is most likely to be free-free emission from a stellar or disc wind. Overall our data support the picture of at least one, but probably several, giant planets orbiting HD100546 within 25 au. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. The prototypical low-mass young stellar object, T Tauri, is a well-studied multiple system with at least three components. Aims. We aim to explore the T Tau system with the highest spatial resolution, study the time evolution of the known components, and re-determine the orbital parameters of the stars. Methods. Near-infrared classical imaging and integral field spectrograph observations were obtained during the Science Verification of SPHERE, the new high-contrast imaging facility at the VLT. The obtained FWHM of the primary star varies between 0.05000 and 0.05900, making these the highest spatial resolution near-infrared images of the T Tauri system obtained to date. Results. Our near-infrared images confirm the presence of extended emission south of T Tau Sa, reported in the literature. New narrow-band images show, for the first time, that this feature shows strong emission in both the Bγ- and H2 1-0 S(1) lines. Broadband imaging at 2.27 μm shows that T Tau Sa is 0.92 mag brighter than T Tau Sb, which is in contrast to observations from Jan. 2014 (when T Tau Sa was fainter than Sb), and demonstrates that T Tau Sa has entered a new period of high variability. The newly obtained astrometric positions of T Tau Sa and Sb agree with orbital fits from previous works. The orbit of T Tau S (the centre of gravity of Sa and Sb) around T Tau N is poorly constrained by the available observations and can be fit with a range of orbits ranging from a nearly circular orbit with a period of 475 years to highly eccentric orbits with periods up to 2:7 X 104 years. We also detected a feature south of T Tau N, at a distance of 144 ± 3 mas, which shows the properties of a new companion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims. Our goal is to determine the molecular composition of the circumstellar disk around AB Aurigae (hereafter, AB Aur). AB Aur is a prototypical Herbig Ae star and the understanding of its disk chemistry is paramount for understanding the chemical evolution of the gas in warm disks. Methods. We used the IRAM 30-m telescope to perform a sensitive search for molecular lines in AB Aur as part of the IRAM Large program ASAI (a chemical survey of Sun-like star-forming regions). These data were complemented with interferometric observations of the HCO+ 1→0 and C17O 1→0 lines using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). Single-dish and interferometric data were used to constrain chemical models. Results. Throughout the survey, several lines of CO and its isotopologues, HCO+, H2CO, HCN, CN, and CS, were detected. In addition, we detected the SO 54→33 and 56→45 lines, confirming the previously tentative detection. Compared to other T Tauri and Herbig Ae disks, AB Aur presents low HCN 3→2/HCO+ 3→2 and CN 2→1/HCN 3→2 line intensity ratios, similar to other transition disks. AB Aur is the only protoplanetary disk detected in SO thus far, and its detection is consistent with interpretation of this disk being younger than those associated with TTauri stars. Conclusions. We modeled the line profiles using a chemical model and a radiative transfer 3D code. Our model assumes a flared disk in hydrostatic equilibrium. The best agreement with observations was obtained for a disk with a mass of 0.01 MΘ, Rin = 110 AU, Rout = 550 AU, a surface density radial index of 1.5, and an inclination of 27?. The intensities and line profiles were reproduced within a factor of ~2 for most lines. This agreement is reasonable considering the simplicity of our model that neglects any structure within the disk. However, the HCN 3→2 and CN 2→1 line intensities were predicted to be more intense by a factor of > 10. We discuss several scenarios to explain this discrepancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Models of magnetically driven accretion and outflows reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars, but the picture is much less clear for the Herbig Ae/Be stars, due to the poor knowledge of their magnetic field strength and topology. The Herbig Ae star PDS 2 was previously included in two magnetic studies based on low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Only in one of these studies the presence of a weak mean longitudinal magnetic field was reported. In the present study, for the first time, high-resolution high accuracy radial velocity planet searcher (HARPS) spectropolarimetric observations of PDS 2 are used to investigate the presence of a magnetic field. A firm detection of a weak longitudinal magnetic field is achieved using the multiline singular value decomposition method for Stokes profile reconstruction ((Bz) = 33 ± 5 G). To gain better knowledge of typical magnetic field strengths in late Herbig Be and Herbig Ae stars, we compiled previous magnetic field measurements, revealing that only very few stars have fields stronger than 200 G, and half of the sample possesses fields of about 100 G and less. These results challenge our current understanding of the magnetospheric accretion in intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars as they indicate that the magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars are by far weaker than those measured in T Tauri stars.
