Through a comprehensive review of published literature on fish glue (FG), the ecological glue for traditional furniture, the traditional handicraft for making FG was found to include six main processes: soaking, steaming, manual smashing, decoction, filtration, and airing. The handicraft that makes FG is manual and is not only time-consuming and laborious but does not have clearly documented standard processes and is thus less repeatable. Considering this, experiments to optimize a new technique for making FG were designed. Six basic technological processes (cutting and drying, crushing, soaking, decoction, filtration, and airing) were investigated to optimize the new glue production technique. The technological processes of the new technique were compared with those of the traditional handicraft method. The results indicated that preparing FG following the optimal processes of the new glue-making technique not only ensured the quality of the glue solution but also outperformed the traditional handicraft technique in the following aspects: 1) it simplifies the production process, reduces labor intensity, and saves time: the soaking time is decreased by 50% and the traditional manual smashing process is not required; 2) it improves the glue yield by 5.42%; and 3) due to introduction of mechanical processing, time and temperature are controllable, rendering production more repeatable and easily up-scaled. High-speed small crafts are extensively used in various environments. However, these planing vessels are prone to motion instabilities, particularly during turning and course-changing maneuvers. Understanding their behavior under a fixed yaw angle is crucial in the early design stages. This paper presents a numerical study to evaluate the influence of yaw angle on the hydrodynamic performance of high-speed planing hulls. The results indicate that the yaw angle has a significant influence on the hull's running attitudes, as well as hydrodynamic forces and moments. At large yaw angles, air is drawn into the roll-down side, resulting in a small dynamic wetted surface area in high-speed cases. A negative pressure region is observed under high-speed conditions, with asymmetric conditions accentuating (mitigating) this negative pressure region on the roll-down (roll-up) sides. The peaks of sectional lift and resistance are typically observed near the stagnation line in most cases. The sectional sway force is more pronounced behind the center of gravity when the planing speed is slightly above the critical velocity of the trim angle, resulting in a positive yaw moment and suggesting a trend toward a reduction in the yaw angle. It is evident that the aerodynamic resistance on the transom surface is considerable in high-speed cases. Protein design and engineering are evolving at an unprecedented pace leveraging the advances in deep learning. Current models nonetheless cannot natively consider non-protein entities within the design process. Here, we introduce a deep learning approach based solely on a geometric transformer of atomic coordinates and element names that predicts protein sequences from backbone scaffolds aware of the restraints imposed by diverse molecular environments. To validate the method, we show that it can produce highly thermostable, catalytically active enzymes with high success rates. Due to the continuous development of social and economic forms, most of the traditional handicraft forms of industry have been more challenged in the wave of development, and the world UNESCO and the Chinese government have made great efforts. In recent years, the state has promoted cultural confidence, encouraging people to re-focus on the spiritual connection with culture while satisfying their material needs. The trend of great attention to traditional culture and the continuous development of tourism have brought Pingyao lacquerware, a representative traditional handicraft, back to the public's attention. As one of the intangible cultural heritages, it is in urgent need of attention and protection due to the complexity of the craft and the difficulty of passing it on. Nowadays, the experience economy has become the trend of the times, and tourists are not only looking for material products or simple services but are also more and more concerned about their experience in travel activities. Therefore, it is essential to satisfy the personalized experience needs of tourists in the region of Pingyao regarding the lacquerware experience. One of the crucial factors in Indonesia’s National Industrial Development Master Plan 2015 - 2035 is enhancing human resources skills and creativity in producing wood/rattan handicrafts. Aesthetic factors are the main requirements for these products due to their cultural and artistic value. In determining the direction of the innovations, it is necessary to understand the product’s development, especially in this regard. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the aesthetic factors used in developing rattan bag handicraft products using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, guided by Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). The SLR was conducted based on the journal and proceedings obtained through the Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Springer databases. The contribution of this study was to find aesthetic factors considered for the development of bag product innovation. The results showed that six aesthetic factors were applied in developing rattan bag products: materials, motifs, ethnic/culture, shapes, patterns, and colors.

Abstract Background The traditional knowledge in southern Yemen is rich in wild medicinal and food plants, which has been documented in our previous studies. In addition, other significant and general traditional usage for the daily livelihood requirements of local people (beyond medicinal and food plant uses) has not been studied before and needs urgent documentation. Methods Ethnobotanical data on of wild plants used by local people in southern Yemen were collected by oral questionnaire interviews. Most informants (n = 1020) were local elderly from 15 different localities in southern Yemen. The local names and non-medicinal and non-food uses of plants were identified and analyzed. Results The ethnobotanical data resulted various traditional uses of 73 plant species distributed in 28 families. The most represented families were Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Malvaceae. The most growth forms were trees and shrubs. Seven main and common categories of traditional uses were determined and classified as handicraft, health aids, livestock husbandry and beekeeping, economic and commercial plant products, agriculture tools, construction timber and fuel. The most cited species were identified for Ziziphus spina-christi, Vachellia tortilis, Vachellia nilotica, Anisotes trisulcus, Dracaena hanningtonii (Sansevieria ehrenbergii) and Aerva javanica, which have multi-purpose values of traditional usage. Nine major traditional uses of local wild plants were recorded: handicraft, agriculture tools, products aid general health, economic products, construction timber, livestock husbandry, bee keeping, fuel and ornamental. Conclusions Despite the challenges on local traditional knowledge of wild plants, it still requested vital to many usages of traditional life and still have an economic value and heritage required of develop the daily livelihood level of the local people especially in rural areas. This includes the traditional uses of wild plants in handicraft skills, tools of agriculture, constructions. The importance of the continuity of traditional industries and their transmission to generations lies in the local population’s reliance on local natural resources without relying on external resources in situations such as wars. As an ancient Indonesian art, Batik has been recognized by the United Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Batik is one of the original handicrafts in Indonesia. This research explores three main issues of Bakaran batik legend: community leaders' viewpoint in Juana, Pati Regency; aspects of context and implicatures; and coherences among themes, visual elements, and images. A qualitative method was conducted in this research. It was conducted in February-April 2022 with a case study at Bakaran Juana Pati district. Data collection techniques were employed through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and document analysis. Data was collected using observations and interviews with eight informants. The data was analyzed using pragmatics. The findings revealed that Bakaran batik has its uniqueness explicitly in its patterns. Numerous designs in Bakaran batik patterns are associated with the legend of Nyai Ageng Danowati, a Majapahit Kingdom's Batik expert figure who escaped from Majapahit and then lived in Bakaran village Juana district, Pati Regency. It implicitly has legendary aspects when analyzed in terms of possible patterns. Bakaran village's legendary patterns include the Kembang Druju, the Limaran, the Gandrung, and the Magel Ati. The legend pattern's context is typically connected with the legend of the Batik figure, Nyai Ageng Danowati, and the implica-ture of the legendary pattern is related to the moment of Nyai Ageng Danowati for spending her life while she was on the escapement. The visual elements and the image of the legend motif are coherent, and the visual form of the Motif theme is relevant to Nyai Danowati's life story. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses a subject which became increasingly visible starting with the second decade of the 21st century: the relationship between design and crafts. Following the work hypotheses adopted, a question appears to be natural: are the traditional crafts able to inspire a trend in the evolution of contemporary Romanian design? Several design actions that highlight the opening up and the interest of the designers concerning crafts shows an affirmative response. Designers and design organizations give consistence to the subject and seem to prefigure the evolution of Romanian design in the near future. The relationship between design and crafts is able to articulate in its meaning also the vernacular sense. Romanian designers who created objects together with specialized craftspeople may have a confirmation of the value of their work in the similarity with a contemporary Japanese approach. Background: Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a leading cause of disability increasing with age and is more prevalent in women and in various physically demanding occupations. This systematic review identifies and summarises occupational exposures for women in physically demanding occupations and discusses sex differences and consequences. Methods: In this systematic review, we searched various electronic databases for reports published between date of database inception and October 2022. We included cohort studies and case-control studies that assessed the association between exposure to physically demanding occupations and the development of HOA. We then assessed the methodological quality of selected studies, extracted relative effects, compared the risk for women and men and meta-analytically reviewed the effects of physically demanding occupations. All steps were based on a study protocol published in PROSPERO (CRD42015016894). Results: We included six cohort studies and two case-control studies in this systematic review. These studies showed a considerably increased risk of developing HOA in both sexes. Women working in traditionally female-dominated occupations such as cleaning, sales, catering, childcare and hairdressing that are physically demanding, have a higher risk of developing HOA than men in similarly physically demanding occupations. Conversely, in traditionally male-dominated occupations with a high heterogeneity of work activities, such as agriculture, crafts, construction, as well as in low-skilled occupations, the risk was higher for men. One exception are health occupations, which are grouped together with a wide range of other technical occupations, making it difficult to draw conclusions. Conclusions: Existing studies indicate an association between various occupations with a high physical workload and an increased risk of developing HOA. Occupational prevention and individual health promotion strategies should focus on reducing the effects of heavy physical workloads at work. The purpose of this research was to denote the influence of the Exporta Fácil Program on the export of handicrafts from Lima 2014. For this reason, the research was developed within the framework of the quantitative approach, with a causal correlational field design. The study covered a population of 5,451 and a sample of 421. Two previously validated instruments were applied. For the validation of the hypotheses, the own Ordinal Regression Test was used with the purpose of clarifying the Cause-Effect relationship. The results show that the Exporta Fácil program contributed to Lima 2014 handicraft exports, after accepting the hypothesis after the Chi Square (X2) statistical test; Because the data tends to adjust to approximately 7.3 percent. Abstract Background Occupational Therapists use craft-making activities as therapeutic interventions to improve physical and psychological functioning of injured people. Despite the therapeutic effects, craft-making is not routinely used in hand rehabilitation as an intervention for patients with upper limb fractures. These patients often experience physical and psychosocial issues; however, without supportive evidence, therapists hesitate to integrate craft-making into upper limb rehabilitation. Purpose This study aims to determine the effect of a conventional therapy combined with therapeutic craft-making on disability, post-traumatic stress, and physical performance in patients with lower-third forearm fractures. Methods Priori analysis determined that 38 patients will be needed for this superiority randomized controlled trial to be conducted in a hand and upper limb rehabilitation center. Eligible participants must comprehend English, be diagnosed with lower-third forearm fracture(s) stabilized by open reduction internal fixation, and referred to therapy within 2–4 weeks of surgery. Following the CONSORT guidelines, participants will be randomly assigned to a Control (conventional therapy) group or an Intervention (conventional therapy and craft) group. Twice weekly for 6 weeks, Therapist A will provide both groups with 1-h of conventional therapy while the Intervention group will also receive 15 min of craft-making supervised by the Researcher. The primary outcome of disability will be measured with the Quick-Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand. The secondary outcome measurements include the Patient-Rated-Wrist-Evaluation; Impact of Event Scale-revised and physical performance, i.e., the Purdue Pegboard Test, AROM, and grip strength. All outcome measures will be obtained by Therapist B prior to the 1st therapy visit and after the 12th visit. Descriptive analysis will be done for the categorical and continuous data and a mixed model ANOVA for analysis of the initial and final assessment scores within and between groups. Results This study is ongoing. Discussion The intent of this study is to determine if therapeutic crafts have value as an intervention when used in combination with conventional therapy for patients with lower-third forearm fractures. If the value of crafts is supported, this evidence may reduce hesitancy of therapists to implement craft-making with patients referred to hand therapy after upper limb fracture. To enhance the competitiveness of the traditional handicraft industry, providers should offer service experiences using their products (i.e., servitization) instead of merely selling them. Effective management for servitization in the traditional handicraft industry must consider the differences in customers’ prior knowledge. Nevertheless, previous studies have overlooked how this knowledge about traditional handicrafts impacts service experiences. This study explores which factors of consumer behavior (during services) and service outcomes (post-services) are affected by customers’ prior knowledge about a traditional handicraft. An organic food restaurant booth was provided at an annual summer festival about pottery as an experiment, and data were collected on customers’ meal experiences with a pottery plate through a questionnaire. The findings suggest that customers’ prior knowledge about a traditional handicraft promotes their search for information from service resources (i.e., organic foods) which are integrated with the traditional handicraft and their creativity during services, thereby changing their understanding of service resources and increasing satisfaction with service experience. This study contributes to services marketing by identifying the factors of during and post-services that are affected by customers’ prior knowledge about a traditional handicraft in the context of servitization.

State-of-the-art image object detection computational models require an intensive parameter fine-tuning stage (using deep convolution network, etc). with tens or hundreds of training examples. In contrast, human intelligence can robustly learn a new concept from just a few instances (i.e., few-shot detection). The distinctive perception mechanisms between these two families of systems enlighten us to revisit classical handcraft local descriptors (e.g., SIFT, HOG, etc.) as well as non-parametric visual models, which innately require no learning/training phase. Herein, we claim that the inferior performance of these local descriptors mainly results from a lack of global structure sense. To address this issue,we refine local descriptorswith spatial contextual attention of neighbor affinities and then embed the local descriptors into discriminative subspace guided by Kernel-InfoNCE loss. Di ering from conventional quantization of local descriptors in high-dimensional feature space or isometric dimension reduction, we actually seek a brain-inspired few-shot feature representation for the objectmanifold, which combines data-independent primitive representation and semantic context learning and thus helps with generalization. The obtained embeddings as pattern vectors/tensors permit us an accelerated but non-parametric visual similarity computation as the decision rule for final detection. Our approach to few-shot object detection is nearly learning-free, and experiments on remote sensing imageries (approximate 2-D affine space) confirm the efficacy of our model. Modernist propositions long have been understood as atemporal—somehow outside of time—or insistently hailing the future. This temporal framework suppresses the contributions of those excluded from modernist canons, particularly Black women. In this article, visual and material analysis of sculptural works produced in the 1970s and 1980s by U.S. Black women artists Beverly Buchanan, Senga Nengudi, and Betye Saar reveal how Black feminists have engaged with modernist protocols in order to redress cultural erasures of Black women. These practices exemplify Black feminist modernisms, or creative practices that unsettle the racist and sexist logics of dominant cultural institutions. Each of these artists utilizes haptic surfaces as a method for defying institutional modernism's obfuscation of the past. The analysis focuses on Buchanan's defiance of memorial erasures, Nengudi's reenactment of labor, including in its historical forms, and Saar's adaptation of generational memory-making processes. Ultimately, these artists' rejection of a "timeless" modernism demands that viewers understand the present moment in relationship to a still-evolving past. Loop closure detection is an important module for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Correct detection of loops can reduce the cumulative drift in positioning. Because traditional detection methods rely on handicraft features, false positive detections can occur when the environment changes, resulting in incorrect estimates and an inability to obtain accurate maps. In this research paper, a loop closure detection method based on a variational autoencoder (VAE) is proposed. It is intended to be used as a feature extractor to extract image features through neural networks to replace the handicraft features used in traditional methods. This method extracts a low-dimensional vector as the representation of the image. At the same time, the attention mechanism is added to the network and constraints are added to improve the loss function for better image representation. In the back-end feature matching process, geometric checking is used to filter out the wrongmatching for the false positive problem. Finally, through numerical experiments, the proposed method is demonstrated to have a better precision-recall curve than the traditional method of the bag-of-words model and other deep learning methods and is highly robust to environmental changes. Designing a PFD poses challenges in achieving precise phase detection, minimising dead zones, optimising power consumption, and ensuring robust performance across various operational frequencies, necessitating complex engineering and innovative solutions. This study delves into optimising a PFD circuit, designed using 90 nm standard CMOS technology, aiming to achieve superior operational frequencies. An efficient and high-frequency PFD design is crafted and analysed using cadence virtuoso. The study focused on investigating the impact of optimising PFD design. With the optimised PFD, an operational frequency of 5 GHz has been achieved, along with a power consumption of only 29 µW. The dead zone of the PFD was only 25 ps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The state of Odisha, formerly known as "Utkal" is a land of enchanting beauty, art, culture and it houses exquisite handicrafts made by different groups of artisans who have traditionally specialized in craft making. The field surveys were conducted during the year 2019-21 to explore the skill and knowledge of craft preparation from plant materials. A total of 46 plant species belonging to 39 genera and 21 families were documented for 73 types of artifacts preparation. Out of these 46 species, 24, 21 and 1 species were monocots, dicots and gymnosperm, respectively. They were categorised under herb (20 species) followed by tree (19 species), shrub (4 species) and climber (3 species). Data were collected through open-ended/structured/semi-structured interviews with artisans of different districts of Odisha. The artistic skills of Odia artists are well known in the world. Each article is aesthetically pleasing and reflects the creativity of the artisan and is a representative of local culture and tradition. From their beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century, the world's fairs sought to generate a synthesized body of knowledge about the world by gathering an encyclopedic and didactic collection of objects from a wide array of fields: technology, machinery, handicrafts, the visual arts, performance, and ethnography - knowledge made visible and experienced through artifacts sourced from all over the world. This expanded visual experience can also be understood as one that interprets the gaze as a catalyst for a multi-sensory perception and categorization of material culture, of both two- and three-dimensional objects of vision. Thus, these exhibitions not only synthesized 'the world', but they also synthesized arts, handicrafts, architecture, and technology into an imagined Gesamtkunstwerk. The objects and works of art - handcrafted or machine-made - displayed at the world's fairs were conceived as a mass spectacle as they were turned into the signifiers of a narrative - imagined and presented as coherent - of technological progress, colonial expansion, and artistic innovation. The colonized regions were to stand in contrast to this, with ethnographica and handicrafts presented as traditional, 'authentic'. This study aimed to evaluate pre-service science teachers' views on STEM education. Data were collected at the end of each activity and the end of the training with evaluation sheets. The collected data were analyzed with the content analysis method and interpreted with percentage and frequency values. The research method is a case study. Participants received four weeks of practical training, including STEM activities. Based on the data collected, it was determined that teacher candidates did not have a negative perception of STEM activities, that they had difficulty in activities that required handcraft, and that it contributed positively to their interdisciplinary perspectives. They also stated that the training was enjoyable and creative; developed imagination and handicraft skills; increased productivity, self-confidence, design skills, problem-solving skills, and group work; provided practical thinking; ensured permanent learning and field cooperation; and contributed to analytical thinking. Most of the participants stated that they did not find STEM education at their universities sufficient, would apply STEM activities to their students when they became teachers, and wanted to improve themselves in STEM education. Participants stated that they most needed development in the subject of academic knowledge, utilization of technology, handcraft and creativity. The exhibition produced (8) family Handicrafts and (15) individual Handicrafts based on the retinal and texture formation in the 3D space with a descriptive and analytical approach to achieve the concepts of formation, growth, transparency, fluid space, reproduction, emanation, moiré, realization of internal and external space, and abstraction from the mass of the form to achieve movement, dynamism and overlay of all kinds ( Imaginary, real, macro, partial) to analyze the visual vision of the cocoon and the identity of transformation with linear relations and aesthetic values, resulting from plastic relations and tactile manifestations. This study investigated the drying characteristics of pandan (Pandanus simplex Merr.) leaves using the DOST-FPRDI's furnace-type dryer to provide an efficient drying solution. Two trial runs were conducted with different kiln drying settings. During the first trial run, narrow (6, 8, and 14 mm) pandan leaf strips with initial moisture content (MC) values ranging from 105-145% achieved an MC below 20% within 1 h. Conversely, wider leaf strips (17 and 21 mm) required a longer drying duration of approximately 4 h to reach the desired MC level. In the second trial run, with higher temperature setting, again the narrow leaf strips with initial MC ranging from 123 to 136% attained an MC below 20% within 1 h, whereas the wider ones took just 2 h to dry below 20%. Two verification runs were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the second trial run. Leaf strips of various sizes demonstrated improved drying times, with the desired MC achieved within half an hour to 1.5 h. The absorption rate of pandan leaf samples was also examined, revealing their ability to absorb moisture from the air. Within a day, the samples absorbed more than 5% moisture, highlighting the importance of not drying the leaves below the prevailing equilibrium MC of the environment. In Denmark, heightened public interest surrounding migration politics has become embodied in the arts, leading to the development of migration-related arts projects. In this study we explore the experiences of women taking part in an arts-based integration project designed for migrant and Danish women to knit, sew, and crochet in female company, with a view to professionalise their handicrafts. Our findings, which are grounded in ethnographic fieldwork as well as interviews with members of the group, demonstrate how handicraft acts as a prism through which categories such as gender, class, and ethnicity are negotiated within the project. We found that group members' national and cultural backgrounds shaped their different expectations and experiences in the project. The roles they occupied and their self-perception within the group were also shaped by other factors, such as their family status, their state of employment, and whether handicraft was more of a 'hobby' or a source of income. The study makes a case for appreciating the importance of social recognition. Understanding how these women perceived their own and each other's work becomes a magnifier of the socio-political context in which the integration project is situated. The present study aims at examining the semiotic modes used in the rubrics for girls and the topics they reflect in Arab children's magazines. To this end, eight girls' sections were extracted from two Arab children's magazines, namely Majid (active) and Hatem (non-active). We adopted Kress and Van Leeuwen's (2006) visual grammar in our data analysis. We focused on representational, interactive, and compositional metafunctions. The results show that although both publications used a variety of semiotic modes to express meaning, there are some differences between them. That is, Majid is richer than Hatem in terms of layout, the use of pictures, and vibrant colors. The findings also indicate that the two periodicals discuss similar topics, mainly recipes, fashion, and etiquette, but they vary in the attention given to each topic. While Majid concentrates on fashion and beauty, Hatem places much more focus on recipes and handcrafts. These results suggest that the variations in focus on specific topics could be related to the socio-economic contexts in which the two magazines are published. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many of today's computational design systems based on explicit or graphic programming software require designers to determine relationships for morphogenesis based on computational thinking supported by the abstraction process. This computational thinking process can reduce the ability to generate analogies in design development and adverse vision related to computational tools. It also reduces the innovation capacity of small companies that produce handicrafts and design teaching in a customized way. This research promotes a computational model based on machine learning combined with an analog creation process. Machine learning engines determine the objects similarity percentage between students' objects and master objects through a forecasting model. This paper sheds light on how aesthetic judgments govern actions in education for design literacy and sustainability behaviours. Educational material is examined by asking: (1) What meanings regarding becoming a sustainable consumer are made available to students in the educational material? (2) How are these narratives communicated to change students’ behaviours? The material in question consists of 17 design projects intended to be used in the Swedish school subject, Educational Sloyd. Using a practical epistemological analysis, two ways of becoming a sustainable consumer are identified: to have fun and to feel clever. The paper also shows how social marketing is used as a strategy in communicating how to change student behaviours.
