Ascoviruses are insect-specific viruses that are thought to utilize the cellular apoptotic processes of host larvae to produce numerous virion-containing vesicles. In this study, we monitored the in vivo infection processes of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h) to illustrate the regulated cell death (RCD) of host cells. Transmission electron microscopic observations did not reveal any morphological markers of apoptosis in the fat bodies or hemocytes of HvAV-3h-infected Helicoverpa armigera or Spodoptera exigua larvae. However, several hemocytes showed the morphological criteria for necrosis and/or pyroptosis. Further in vitro biochemical tests were performed to confirm the RCD type of host cells after infection with HvAV-3h. Different morphological characteristics were found between the early (prior to 24 hours post-infection, [hpi]) and later (48 to 120 hpi) stages in both HvAV-3h infected larval fat bodies and hemocytes. In the early stages, the virions could only be found in several adipohemocytes, and the fat bodies were cleaving their contained lipid inclusions into small lipid dots. In the later stage, both fat bodies and hemocytes were filled with numerous virions. According to the morphological characteristics of HvAV-3h infected larval fat bodies or hemocytes, the pathogenic characteristics and infection patterns of HvAV-3h in the host larvae were described, and the systematic pathogenic mode of ascovirus infection was refined in this study. This study details the complete infection process of ascoviruses, which provides insights into the relationship between a pathogenesis of an insect virus and the RCD of different host tissues at different stages of infection. IMPORTANCE Viruses and other pathogens can interrupt host cellular apoptosis to gain benefits, such as sufficient resources and a stable environment that enables them to complete their replication and assembly. It is unusual for viruses to code proteins with homology to caspases, which are commonly recognized as apoptosis regulators. Ascoviruses are insect viruses with special cytopathology, and they have been hypothesized to induce apoptosis in their host larvae via coding a caspase-like protein. This enables them to utilize the process of cellular apoptosis to facilitate vesicle formation and replication. However, our previous studies revealed different trends. The fat bodies and hemocytes of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h)-infected larvae did not show any morphological markers of apoptosis but did display necrosis and/or pyroptosis morphological characteristics. The pathogenic characteristics and infection patterns of HvAV-3h in the host larvae were described, which can help us understand the relationship between the pathogenesis of an insect virus and host RCD.

BACKGROUND Floating elbow along with ipsilateral multiple segmental forearm fracture is a rare and high-energy injury, although elbow dislocation or fracture of the ulna and radius may occur separately. CASE SUMMARY We report the case of a 37-year-old woman with open (IIIA) fracture of the right distal humerus with multiple shaft fractures of the ipsilateral radius and ulna with a history of falling from a height of almost 20 m from a balcony. After providing advanced trauma life support, damage control surgery was performed to debride the arm wound and temporarily stabilize the right upper limb with external fixators in the emergency operating room. Subsequently, one-stage internal fixation of multiple fractures was performed with normal values of biochemical indicators and reduction in limb swelling. The patient achieved good outcome at the 7 mo follow-up. CONCLUSION One- or two-stage treatment must be performed according to the type of injury; we efficiently used the “damage control principle.”

The mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) can help us understand the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Lethe and the subfamily Satyrinae. In this study, we sequenced the complete mitogenomes of 14 Lethe species, which range in size from 15,225 to 15,271 bp, with both 37 genes (13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, 2 rRNAs) and a noncoding A + T-rich region. The gene arrangement and orientation is similar to typical mitogenomes of Lepidoptera. The Ka/Ks ratio shows that cox1 has the slowest evolutionary rate. The secondary structure of trnN lacks the Pseudouracil loop (TψC loop) in most Lethe species. The inferred phylogenetic analyses show that Lethe is a well-supported monophyletic group, and reveal 2 major clades within the genus Lethe, which is consistent with previous morphological classifications.

Microplitis similis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid of Spodoptera litura larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Here, the effects of constant temperature (18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36 °C) on the development and fecundity of M. similis developing in S. litura were studied in the laboratory to clarify the range of its potential distribution and better understand its potential as a biological control agent. The developmental duration of M. similis varied from 10.6 (33 °C) to 27.9 days (18 °C). The developmental threshold temperature and effective accumulative temperature of M. similis were 9.96 °C and 231.14 Degree‐days, respectively. The average adult longevity of M. similis ranged from 5.1 (33 °C) to 26.8 days (18 °C). The maximum fecundity of the parasitoid was observed at 27 and 30 °C, which were 43.07 and 39.73 eggs, respectively. The minimum fecundity of the parasitoid was observed at 18 °C, which was 8.27 eggs. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ) of M. similis were the highest at 30 °C. The net reproduction rate (R0) was the highest at 27 °C and 30 °C, which were 44.34 and 40.39, respectively. We concluded that temperatures in the range 27–30 °C are the most suitable for development and reproduction of M. similis. Our study provides detailed basic information for development and reproduction of M. similis under different temperature conditions.

Homologues of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h) orf21 are found in 9 completely sequenced members of the ascoviruses, but so far their functions are unknown. Here, orf21 (3h-21) was cloned in-frame into a pET-28a bacterial expression vector. The fusion protein produced by this construct was used for the preparation of a polyclonal antiserum. RT-PCR analysis showed a single transcript of 3h-21 of approximately 0.7kb was transcribed beginning at 24h post-infection in infected Helicoverpa armigera larvae. Western blot analysis of extracts from HvAv-3h-infected Helicoverpa armigera larvae detected a 25.6 kDa protein late in infection. This antiserum also reacted with a 25.6 kDa protein in purified virions of HvAv-3h. The protein was not extensively modified post-translation. Immunoelectron microscopy confirmed that the 3H-21 is associated with the structure of HvAV-3h virions.

Simple Summary Biological control is an important direction for pest control in the future, and chemical ecology is an indispensable part of biological control. Therefore, we tested the selection of Spodoptera litura and parasitic wasps on the volatiles of different treatments of cabbage and collected and analyzed the volatiles of different treatments of cabbage. This study found that cabbage was fed by Spodoptera litura to produce volatiles to avoid Spodoptera litura while also attracting Microplitis similis. As a result, some compounds were found to be related to the behavior of Spodoptera litura and Microplitis similis. These results provide a theoretical basis for searching for biological control resources and chemical control. Abstract Plants respond to herbivorous insect attacks by releasing volatiles that directly harm the herbivore or that indirectly harm the herbivore by attracting its natural enemies. Although the larvae of Spodoptera litura (the tobacco cutworm) are known to induce the release of host plant volatiles, the effects of such volatiles on host location by S. litura and by the parasitoid Microplitis similis, a natural enemy of S. litura larvae, are poorly understood. Here, we found that both the regurgitate of S. litura larvae and S. litura-infested cabbage leaves attracted M. similis. S. litura had a reduced preference for cabbage plants that had been infested with S. litura for 24 or 48 h. M. similis selection of plants was positively correlated with the release of limonene; linalool and hexadecane, and was negatively correlated with the release of (E)-2-hexenal and 1-Butene, 4-isothiocyanato. S. litura selection of plants was positively correlated with the release of (E)-2-hexenal, 1-Butene, 4-isothiocyanato, and decanal, and was negatively correlated with the release of limonene, nonanal, hexadecane, heptadecane, and octadecane. Our results indicate that host plant volatiles can regulate the behavior of S. litura and M. similis.

Analysis of orthology is important for understanding protein conservation, function and phylogenomics. This study performed a comprehensive identification of Ascoviridae orthology based on identification of 366 ascoviridae protein homologue groups and phylogenetic analysis of 34 non-single copy proteins. Our fondings revealed 90 newly annotated proteins, five new identified Ascoviridae core proteins and 14 Ascovirus core proteins. Moreover, a phylogenomic tree of 11 ascoviridae species was inferred based on the concatenation of 35 of 45 Ascoviridae ortholog groups. In combination with phosphoproteomic results and conservation estimations, 30 conserved phosphorylation sites on 17 phosphoproteins were identified from a total of 176 phosphosites on 57 phosphoproteins from Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h), supplying potential research targets for exploration of the detailed role of these protein in the regulation of viral infection mechanisms. This study would facilitates further Ascoviridae genome annotation and comparison and other functional genomic investigations.

Lepidoptera has rich species including many agricultural pests and economical insects around the world. The mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) were utilized to explore the phylogenetic relationships between difference taxonomic levels in Lepidoptera. However, the knowledge of mitogenomic characteristics and phylogenetic position about superfamily-level in this order is unresolved. In this study, we integrated 794 mitogenomes consisting of 37 genes and a noncoding control region, which covered 26 lepidopteran superfamilies from newly sequenced and publicly available genomes for comparative genomic and phylogenetic analysis. In primitive taxon, putative start codon of cox1 gene was ATA or ATT instead of CGA, but stop codon of that showed four types, namely TAA, TAG, TA and T. The 7-bp overlap between atp8 and atp6 presented as "ATGATAA". Moreover, the most frequently utilized amino acids were leucine (UUA) in 13 PCGs. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the main backbone relationship in Lepidoptera was (Hepialoidea + (Nepticuloidea + (Adeloidea + (Tischerioidea + (Tineoidea + (Yponomeutoidea + (Gracillarioidea + (Papilionoidea + ((Zygaenoidea + Tortricoidea) + (Gelechioidea + (Pyraloidea + ((Geometroidea + Noctuoidea) + (Lasiocampoidea + Bombycoidea))))))))))))).

As specific pathogens of noctuid pests, including Spodoptera exigua, S. litura, Helicoverpa armigera, and Mythimna separata, ascoviruses are suitable for the development of bioinsecticides. In this study, the infectivity of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3j (HvAV-3j) on insect and mammalian cells was evaluated. HvAV-3j infection induced drastic morphological changes in Sf9, HzAM1, SeFB, and HaFB cells, including swelling and detachment. Notably, the latter phenomena did not occur in HvAV-3j-inoculated mammalian cells (HEK293, 7402, HePG2, PK15, ST, and TM3). MTT assays indicated that HvAV-3j inhibited the growth of host insect cells from the 6th hpi, but no effects were detected in the HvAV-3j-inoculated mammalian cells. Furthermore, viral DNA replication, gene transcription, and protein expression were investigated, and the results consistently suggested that HvAV-3j viruses were not able to replicate their genomic DNA, transcribe, or express their proteins in the non-target vertebrate cells. The HvAV-3j genes were only transcribed and expressed in the four insect cell lines. These results indicated that HvAV-3j was infectious to cells derived from S. frugiperda, S. exigua, H. armigera, and H. zea but not to cells derived from human, pig, and mouse, suggesting that ascoviruses are safe to non-target vertebrate cells. Ascoviruses are enveloped, circular, double-stranded DNA viruses that can effectively control the appetite of lepidopteran larvae, thereby reducing the consequent damage and economic losses to crops. In this study, the virion of a sequenced Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3i (HvAV-3i) strain was used to perform proteomic analysis using both in-gel and in-solution digestion. A total of 81 viral proteins, of which 67 were associated with the virions, were identified in the proteome of HvAV-3i virions. Among these proteins, 23 with annotated functions were associated with DNA/RNA metabolism/transcription, virion assembly, sugar and lipid metabolism, signalling, cellular homoeostasis and cell lysis. Twenty-one viral membrane proteins were also identified. Some of the minor 'virion' proteins identified may be non-virion contaminants of viral proteins synthesized during replication, identified by more recent and highly sensitive methods. The extensive identification of the ascoviral proteome will establish a foundation for further investigation of ascoviral replication and infection.

Asian species of the genus Vespina Davis, 1972 (Lepidoptera, Incurvariidae) are mainly reviewed. Vespina meridiana Hirowatari & Yagi sp. nov. from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan, and Vespina sichuana Hirowatari, Huang & Wang sp. nov. from Sichuan, China, are described. The previously known Vespina species are associated with plants from the Fagaceae family on the western coast of the USA and East Asia and with Sapindaceae (Aceraceae) in eastern Europe. The two new species described here are associated with Fagaceae and Myricaceae, respectively, in warm temperate areas in Asia. Vespina nielseni Kozlov, 1987, which was only known from East Asia, is newly recorded from South China. A checklist for the genus is provided herein. Morphological information of the immature stages of the two new species is partially provided. The absence or reduction of a female frenulum and presence of approximately 20 thin pseudofrenular bristles, the dorsoventrally flattened pupa, and the minute tergal spines scattered on abdominal segments 3–8 are considered as possible autapomorphies of Vespina.

A new species, Cephonodes sanshaensis Deng & Huang sp. nov. is described from Xisha Islands in Sansha City of China. The photos of the adults and their genitalia are provided. The new species is similar to C. hylas (Linnaeus, 1771) and C. picus (Cramer, 1777), but it can be distinguished easily by characters in the male genitalia: the right lobe of the uncus hook-shaped with distinctly acute apex, left valva long and narrow with truncate apex, right valva broad knife-shaped. Molecular analysis based on COI barcode sequences is used to infer the phylogenetic position of the new species within the genus Cephonodes. An updated key and checklist to the species of the genus Cephonodes are also provided.

The phase stability and elastic properties of paramagnetic (PM), ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases in L12-(Ni,Cu)3(Al,Fe,Cr) alloy are first investigated using the exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTO) method in combination with the coherent potential approximation (CPA). The result shows the AFM structure phase of the three is the most stable in the ground state. Calculated elastic constants show that all the phases are mechanically stable, and have uncovered that L12-(Ni,Cu)3(Al,Fe,Cr) can achieve good strength and ductility simultaneously. Then, crucial thermal properties are described satisfactorily using the Debye&ndash, Gr&uuml, neisen model, showing heat capacity, Gibbs free energy G, the competitive contribution of entropy &minus, TS and enthalpy H exhibiting significant temperature dependences. Moreover, the magnetic phase transition thermodynamics was studied, which suggests that &minus, TS has a primary contribution to Gibbs free energy and may play a key role in the phase transition. The present results can benefit the understanding of the mechanical, thermodynamic and magnetic properties of the L12 structure phase in 3d high-entropy alloys.

3h-31 of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h) is a highly conserved gene of ascoviruses. As an early gene of HvAV-3h, 3h-31 codes for a non-structural protein (3H-31) of HvAV-3h. In the study, 3h-31 was initially transcribed and expressed at 3 h post-infection (hpi) in the infected Spodoptera exigua fat body cells (SeFB). 3h-31 was further inserted into the bacmid of Autographa californica nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) to generate an infectious baculovirus (AcMNPV-31). In vivo experiments showed that budded virus production and viral DNA replication decreased with the expression of 3H-31, and lucent tubular structures were found around the virogenic stroma in the AcMNPV-31-infected SeFB cells. In vivo, both LD(50) and LD(90) values of AcMNPV-31 were significantly higher than those of the wild-type AcMNPV (AcMNPV-wt) in third instar S. exigua larvae. An interesting finding was that the liquefaction of the larvae killed by the infection of AcMNPV-31 was delayed. Chitinase and cathepsin activities of AcMNPV-31-infected larvae were significantly lower than those of AcMNPV-wt-infected larvae. The possible regulatory function of the chitinase and cathepsin for 3H-31 was further confirmed by RNAi, which showed that larval cathepsin activity was significantly upregulated, but chitinase activity was not significantly changed due to the RNAi of 3h-31. Based on the obtained results, we assumed that the function of 3H-31 was associated with the inhibition of host larval chitinase and cathepsin activities, so as to restrain the hosts in their larval stages. Micropterigidae is a family of Lepidoptera characterized by plesiomorphic morphological characters. Presently, this family consists of more than 22 genera and is distributed throughout all biogeographic realms. Vietomartyria Hashimoto & Mey, 2000 presently consists of six species mainly from South China. Two new species of the genus, V. wuyunjiena sp. nov. and V. maoershana sp. nov., are described herein from China; adult genitalia and wing venation are illustrated. Some biological accounts of the new species are also provided. A key to all described Vietomartyria species is given.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the economic effects of fish stocking on plant and fish performance in lotus fields, as well as to determine its influence on controlling common pest species associated with lotus fields. Lotus yield, fish growth performance, economic returns and pest abundance at 5 fish stocking density treatments (0, 1500, 3000, 4500 and 6000 ind. ha(-1)) were determined in 15 separate lotus fields at a lotus farming facility in Wugang City, Hunan Province, China. The results showed a tendency for the lotus yield to increase with fish stocking density, but significant differences were not found among the treatments. Survival rates were not significantly different among the fish stocking treatments for the 3 species of carp tested. Absolute growth rate and specific growth rate showed similar trends, with their values significantly decreasing as stocking density increased for each carp species. The total yield for the 3 fish species did show significant differences, with the highest yield in the 6000 treatment and the lowest in the 1500 treatment. Total net income was highest in the 4500 treatment and lowest in the control (0) treatment. No significant differences were observed between the 4500 and 3000 treatments. The abundance levels of 3 types of pests were lower in the fish stocking treatments than in the control treatment, and were shown to decrease with increasing stocking density. Based on these observations, stocking densities of 3000 to 4200 total ind. ha(-1) were considered optimal levels in lotus-fish culture systems.

Host selection is a key stage in the lifecycle of parasitoids, and is critical to both their function in control and to the maintenance of their population. The solitary endoparasitoid Microplitis similis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a potential biological control agent of Spodoptera litura (F.) larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). In this study, we examined the preference M. similis exhibits for different instars of the host, host instar effects on parasitoid development, and the weight gain and food consumption of different instars of parasitized larvae. In no-choice tests, parasitization rates were highest in second- and early third-instar larvae, and no fourth- or fifth-instar hosts were parasitized. When provided with a choice of first- to late third-instar host larvae, M. similis preferred to parasitize early third-instar host larvae (41%) with a selection coefficient of 0.37. All morphometric features of wasp offspring increased with increasing age of the host at parasitization. A lower proportion of females emerged from first-instar larvae than any other instar. Parasitized S. litura larvae showed a pronounced reduction in food consumption and weight gain. Microplitis similis may have the potential to significantly suppress population growth and the damage caused by S. litura.

The new species Roeslerstammia tianpingshana sp. n. is described from Hunan, China as the first record of the genus in the country. Examination of two enigmatic Indian species, R. metaplastica Meyrick, 1921 and R. hemiadelpha Meyrick, 1922, revealed that the latter is a synonym of the former. The male and female genitalia of R. metaplastica are described and illustrated for the first time. A checklist for the genus is given.

No ascovirus isolated from China has been sequenced so far. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to sequence the genome of Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3h (HvAV-3h) using the 454 pyrosequencing technology. The genome was found to be 190,519-bp long with a G+C content of 45.5%. We also found that it encodes 185 hypothetical open reading frames (ORFs) along with at least 50 amino acids, including 181 ORFs found in other ascoviruses and 4 unique ORFs. Gene-parity plots and phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship between HvAV-3h and three other HvAV-3a strains and a distant relationship with Spodoptera frugiperda ascovirus 1a (SfAV-1a), Trichoplusia ni ascovirus 6a (TnAV-6a), and Diadromus pulchellus ascovirus 4a (DpAV-4a). Among the 185 potential genes encoded by the genome, 44 core genes were found in all the sequenced ascoviruses. In addition, 25 genes were found to be conserved in all ascoviruses except DpAV-4a. In the HvAV-3h genome, 24 baculovirus repeat ORFs (bros) were present, and the typical homologous repeat regions (hrs) were absent. This study supplies information important for understanding the conservation and functions of ascovirus genes as well as the variety of ascoviral genomes. So far, ascoviruses have only been identified from Lepidoptera host insects and their transmission vectors—endoparasitic wasps. Here, we reported the first finding of a complete novel ascovirus genome from a Diptera insect, Dasineura jujubifolia. Initially, sequence fragments with homology to ascoviruses were incidentally identified during metagenomic sequencing of the mitochondria of D. jujubifolia (Cecidomyiidae, Diptera) which is a major pest on Ziziphus jujuba. Then a full circular viral genome was assembled from the metagenomic data, which has an A+T percentage of 74% and contains 142,600 bp with 141 open reading frames (ORFs). Among the 141 ORFs, 37 were conserved in all sequenced ascoviruses (core genes) including proteins predicted to participate in DNA replication, gene transcription, protein modification, virus assembly, lipid metabolism and apoptosis. Multi-gene families including those encode for baculovirus repeated open reading frames (BROs), myristylated membrane proteins, RING/U-box E3 ubiquitin ligases, and ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters were found in the virus genome. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the newly identified virus belongs to genus Toursvirus of Ascoviridae, and is therefore named as Dasineura jujubifolia toursvirus 2 (DjTV-2a). The virus becomes the second reported species of the genus after Diadromus pulchellus toursvirus 1 (DpTV-1a). The genome arrangement of DjTV-2a is quite different from that of DpTV-1a, suggesting these two viruses separated in an early time of evolution. The results suggest that the ascoviruses may infect a much broader range of hosts than our previous knowledge, and shed lights on the evolution of ascoviruses and particularly on that of the toursviruses. All seven members of the genus Orthobrachia Warren, 1895 are recorded, with description of a new species from Sichuan Province, China and N. Thailand, including Orthobrachia latifasciata (Moore, 1888) and Orthobrachia flavidior (Hampson, 1898) from northern India, Nepal and China, Orthobrachia tenebrosa Yazaki, 1992 from Nepal and India, Orthobrachia owadai Yazaki, 1992 from India, Orthobrachia simpliciata Yazaki, 2002 from China, and Orthobrachia maoershanensis Huang, Xin & Wang, 2003 from South China. A key to the Orthobrachia species is provided, along with a distributional map of all nominal species. The type specimens of the new species are deposited in Hunan Agricultural University (China), South China Agricultural University (China) and Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig (Germany).

Chatter is generally defined as self-generated vibrations from the interaction between tool and workpiece. It is the most critical vibration in machining operations and can decrease the surface quality and cause the premature tool wear. Chatter creates erroneous vibrations on the workpiece surface. However, even though the spatial response of chatter is still bounded, its frequency response would become unstably broadband, emitting high-pitched sounds. The deterioration in both time and frequency domains implies that chatter is a route-to-chaos process. To capture the time-frequency characteristics of chatter, instantaneous frequency is applied to extract the relevant force vibration of machining chatter, and the energy ratio approach is used to develop a discrete stability lobe diagram of a face-milling operation. The proposed method is validated by measuring the surface roughness of the workpiece.

The ideal shear strengths and staking fault energies of face-centered cubic L12 Al3Ti have been systematically investigated by first-principles calculations. The stress-strain relations and lattice parameters variation for six common shear processes were obtained. The calculated results show that L12 Al3Ti would be most prone to deform in the { 1 1 1 } 〈 1 1 - 0 〉 slip system by virtue of the lowest ideal shear strength. The γ -surfaces and the corresponding γ -curves of {0 0 1}, {1 1 0} and {1 1 1} planes for L12 Al3Ti were also obtained. It is shown that the nucleation and glide of perfect two collinear superpartials 1/2{0 0 1}〈1 1 0〉 bound to anti-phase boundary (APB) should be the main deformation mechanism in L12 Al3Ti. Due to the negative APB energy, by thermal activation or externally applied stress, the L12 structure would overcome the energy barrier and transform to other more stable configurations.

The sweet potato leaf folder, Brachmia macroscopa Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), which is a significant pest of plants in the family Convolvulaceae, is rapidly expanding its range in South China and other subtropical regions. Studies were designed to examine the effects of three different host plants (sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.; water spinach, I. aquatica Forsskål; and morning glory, Pharbitis purpurea (L.)) on the development and life table parameters of B. macroscopa under laboratory conditions. We found that the intrinsic rates of increase of B. macroscopa were 0.17 ± 0.004, 0.21 ± 0.005 and 0.16 ± 0.004 on I. batatas, I. aquatica and P. purpurea, respectively. The highest net reproduction rate was 158.06 ± 18.22 per female reared on I. aquatica. The larvae had five instars when reared on I. batatas and I. aquatica, but required six instars on P. purpurea. The mean generation lengths of B. macroscopa ranged from 24.32 ± 0.18 days when reared on I. aquatica to 29.40 ± 0.24 days on P. purpurea. The survival of all stage and fecundity curves was intuitively manipulated using the age-stage-structured and two-sex population life table method, to enable comprehensive descriptions of the stage and population trends of B. macroscopa on the three Convolvulaceae plants. Our results indicated that I. batatas and I. aquatica were more suitable host plants than P. purpurea.

Heliothis virescens ascovirus 3 h (HvAV-3h), a dsDNA insect virus, belonging to the family Ascoviridae, can infect caterpillars of several Noctuidae species by ovipositing parasitoid wasps. In order to provide a comprehensive overview of the interactive responses of host larvae after infection by the ascovirus, a transcriptome analysis of Spodoptera exigua to HvAV-3h was conducted from 6 to 168 hours post infection (hpi). Approximately 101.64 Gb of RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) data obtained from infected and uninfected S. exigua larvae were used to perform a de novo transcriptome assembly, which generated approximately 62,258 S. exigua unigenes. Using differential gene expression analysis, it was determined that the majority of host transcripts were down-regulated beginning at 6 hpi and continuing throughout the infection period, although there was an increase in up-regulated unigene number during the 12 to 72 hpi stage. It is noteworthy that the most abundantly enriched pathways in KEGG annotation were Metabolism terms, indicating that the host larval metabolic mechanisms were highly influenced post HvAV-3h infection. In addition, the host cuticle protein encoding unigenes were highly down-regulated in most of the situations, suggesting that the host larval cuticle synthesis were inhibited by the viral infection.

International audience; During an ongoing DNA-barcoding campaign of the leaf-mining moths that feed on woody plants in Northeast Asia, four lineages of the genus Phyllocnistis (Gracillariidae, Phyllocnistinae) were discovered on dogwood (Cornus spp): P. cornella Ermolaev, 1987 on C. controversa Hemsl. (Japan: Hokkaido) and three new species - one feeding on C. controversa, C. florida L. and C. macrophylla Wall. in Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu), a second species on C. macrophylla in China (Yunnan) and a third on Siberian dogwood Cornus alba L. in Russia (Siberia). All these species showed differences in morphology, in the barcode region of the cytochrome c oxidase I gene and in two nuclear genes (histone H3 and 28S ribosomal RNA). No correlation was found between the deep mitochondrial splits observed and the Wolbachia infection pattern. Based on both morphological and molecular evidence, the three recently discovered lineages are described here as new species: P. indistincta Kobayashi & Triberti, sp. n. (Japan), P. saepta Kirichenko, Ohshima & Huang, sp. n. (China) and P. verae Kirichenko, Triberti & Lopez-Vaamonde, sp. n. (Russia). In addition, the authors re-describe the adult morphology of P. cornella, provide the first record of this species from Japan and highlight the diagnostic characters that allow these Cornus-feeding Phyllocnistis species to be distinguished.
