Multi-axial real-time hybrid simulation (maRTHS) uses multiple hydraulic actuators to apply loads and deform experimental substructures, enacting both translational and rotational motion. This allows for an increased level of realism in seismic testing. However, this also demands the implementation of multiple-input, multiple-output control strategies with complex nonlinear behaviors. To realize true real-time hybrid simulation at the necessary sub- millisecond timescales, computational platforms will need to support these complexities at scale, while still providing deadline assurance. This paper presents initial work towards supporting (and is influenced by the need for) envisioned larger-scale future experiments based on the current maRTHS benchmark: it discusses aspects of hardware, operating system kernels, runtime middleware, and scheduling theory that may be leveraged or developed to meet those goals. This work aims to create new concurrency platforms capable of managing task scheduling and adaptive event handling for computationally intensive numerical simulation and control models like those for the maRTHS benchmark problem. These should support real-time behavior at millisecond timescales, even for large complex structures with thousands of degrees of freedom. Temporal guarantees should be maintained across behavioral and computational mode changes, e.g., linear to nonlinear control. Pursuant to this goal, preliminary scalability analysis is conducted towards designing future maRTHS experiments. The results demonstrate that the increased capabilities of modern hardware architectures are able to handle larger finite element models compared to prior work, while imposing the same latency constraints. However, the results also illustrate a subtle challenge: with larger numbers of CPU cores, thread coordination incurs more overhead. These results provide insight into the computational requirements to support envisioned future experiments that will take the maRTHS benchmark problem to nine stories and beyond in scale. In particular, this paper (1) re-evaluates scalability of prior work on current platform hardware, and (2) assesses the resource demands of a basic smaller scale model from which to gauge the projected scalability of the new maRTHS benchmark as ever larger and more complex models are integrated within it. Steel damper columns (SDCs) are energy-dissipating members that are suitable for reinforced concrete (RC) moment-resisting frames (MRFs) and those often used for multistory housing. In a previous study, the authors proposed an energy-based prediction procedure for the peak and cumulative response of an RC frame building with SDCs. In this procedure, the accuracy of the equivalent velocity of the maximum momentary input energy (V
ΔE1* )-peak equivalent displacement (D1*max ) relationship is essential for improved prediction. In this article, the seismic capacity curve (VΔE1* -D1*max relationship) of RC MRFs with and without SDCs is evaluated using incremental critical pseudo-multi impulse analysis (ICPMIA). In the ICPMIA, which is based on a study by Takewaki and coauthors, the structure is subjected to various intensities of critical pseudo-multi impulsive lateral force. An ICPMIA of planer four 8- and 16-story RC MRFs with and without SDCs is performed to obtain their structural behaviors under various intensities of pulsive input. Then, the seismic capacity curve obtained from the ICMPIA results are compared with the predicted results based on the simplified equations. The main findings of this article are as follows. (i) The seismic capacity curve of RC MRFs without SDCs strongly depends on the number of impulsive lateral forces (Np ). As Np increases, the seismic capacity decreases. The predicted seismic capacity curve severely underestimates that obtained from the ICMPIA in the case of large Np . This trend is notable when the level of pinching behavior in the RC members is severe. (ii) In the case of an RC MRF with SDCs, however, the influence of Np on its seismic capacity curve is small. The predicted seismic capacity curve agrees very well with that obtained from the ICMPIA. The influence of the level of pinching behavior in RC members on the seismic capacity curve is small. Political Science / History & Theory - Abstract

- Abstract
This doctoral thesis deals with the design evolution of long span bridges and the corresponding technical improvement which has led to change the role of deck stiffened system through centuries. All typologies (suspension bridges, cable –stayed bridges, deck arch bridges, bowstring arch bridges) usually adopted to cover long distances, have been taken into account, reading in the same perspective the process which allows their structural optimization. Through the back analysis of about 100 existing bridges, this work investigates on main changes occurred for deck stiffened system, underling the corresponding effects on long span bridge structural behaviour. The central thread of this dissertation is to underline that to cover 150m longer spans, it has been necessary to pass form flexural regime of structures having shorter spans, which act like simple beam-bridges, to the extensional regime of slender long span bridges, whose strict succession of deck cross sections guarantee them to carry loads mainly through tensile or compression strength: bending moments are greatly reduced, while torsional effects are often counteracted by rigid deck box sections. In order to emphasize the effects on structural response that deck characterization could have, peculiar case studies have been analysed. Modern design approach, here explained, inevitably having a relevant effect on bridges aesthetic and their relationship with the surrounding contest, leads to an innovative conception of deck – stiffened system, completely modifying classical basis bridge design.

Through the various essays that compose it, the volume gives voice to subjective experiences and perceptions of men and women involved in military conflicts between the Risorgimento period and the Great War: historical phases characterized by deep elements of continuity regarding the symbolic construction of national identity, but also by equally strong watersheds. The comparison between different contexts is valuable in investigating the relationship between gender, nation, and war. Starting from a stereotype that is still strong, though it has been challenged by recent research − associating women with the desire for peace and men at the will of competition and conquest −, the volume inquired whether a specific "gender" perception of wars emerged from the texts analyzed, and to what extent these conflicts have prodded crisis and transformation in the relations between women and men. In the writings of fighters analyzed in the book − Bourbonists and Garibaldians on the Risorgimento scene, British and Italian volunteers in the First World War − "fighting the war" assumes very different meanings in relation to the side that was chosen and to the individual personality; however, it always represents a crucial moment of confrontation with dominant models of virility. The writings of Louise Colet − a passionate supporter of the Italian cause −, the images of "angels" and "fury" emerging from the male memories of the Risorgimento, alongside writings of so many women mobilized in 1914-18 − from Vera Brittain to Italian irredentists and nationalists, to the feminist minority who remained faithful to pacifist internationalism − remind us that in the nineteenth century, as in the terrible conflict that opens the "age of extremes", the war transformed profoundly, in addition to the lives of men called cannot, in fact, ignore the historical dimension that needs to inform any study that is to be done today on these works.., Clio: Essays in History, Archaeology and Art History; ISSN 2532-4608

In this paper, a series of topics, concerning acquisition, communication, and the analysis of buildings will be discussed. In particular, a strategy aimed at exploiting the visual potentials of reality-based models, will be described inside render engines, real-time applications, as well as their role for the production of conventional drawing for documenting and studying built heritage. This methodology is inspired by pipelines coming from computer-generated imagery (CGI) and the video game industry: areas of research that are progressively showing an increasing interest towards the world of photogrammetry remote sensing, in particular for the new possibilities offered by Structure from Motion (SfM)/Multi View Stereo (MVS) in terms of automatic texturing of complex shapes. Quad-dominant remeshing, displaced subdivision surfaces, and accurate interactive/ automatic parametrization are the main points of this workflow, whose final goal is the achievement of multipurpose models, which are capable to comply with graphic codes of traditional survey, as well as semantic enrichment, and, last but not least, data compression/portability and texture reliability under different lighting conditions.

Background: The metabolism of plasma amino acid (AA) in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been extensively investigated, yielding inconclusive results. This study aims to characterize the metabolic alterations in AA profiles among early-diagnosed children with ASD and compare the findings with those from non-ASD children., Methods: We analyzed plasma AA profiles, measured by ion exchange chromatography, from 1242 ASD children (median age = 4 years; 81% male). Additionally, we studied AA profiles from 488 children, matched for age and free of ASD (control group). Principal component and cluster analysis were employed to explore potential associations within the ASD group and to identify subgroups., Results: We observed lower plasma levels of glutamine in children with ASD compared to non-ASD children ( p < 0.001). Six essential, two conditionally essential, and four non-essential AA were found to be increased in children with ASD. The clustering analysis revealed two groups, labeled Neurological (NEU) and Nutritional (NUT), which included a majority of ASD children (94% and 78%, respectively). The NEU group exhibited high levels of taurine, aspartate, glutamic acid, and ornithine, while the NUT group showed elevated levels of branched-chain AA., Conclusions: In children with ASD, we identified some heterogeneous AA patterns that may serve as biochemical signatures of neurological impairment in some individuals, while in others they may indicate nutritional dysregulation.
