Abstract

We analysed the embryonic epidermis of the pool frog, Pelophylax lessonae, by light and electron microscopy techniques, and characterized preliminarily its mucous secretions with conventional histochemistry (Toluidine Blue, Periodic Acid-Schiff, Alcian blue pH 2.5 and Alcian blue pH 1.0). At Gosner's developmental stage 21, the epidermis consisted of a bilayered epithelium with five cell types. Basal cells (BCs) constituted the basal layer, presented a large nucleus and were sometimes observed in mitosis. Ciliated cells (CCs) had a ciliated apical membrane, with carboxylated glycans in the sub-apical portion. TEM analysis revealed small vesicles just below the surface, a central nucleus, and evident yolk plates. Goblet cells (GCs) and small secretory cells (SSCs) showed secreting vesicles and vacuoles, respectively. In the mucus secretion of GCs sialosulphomucins appeared, while in that of SSCs sulphation was not observed. Under TEM, GCs had irregular shaped nuclei and a less electron-dense cytoplasm with respect to SSCs. Ionocytes (INs) presented apical microvilli and a high electron-dense cytoplasm with vacuoles. SEM analysis revealed that GCs outnumbered the other cell types and that SSCs and INs were usually located together near to GCs. The relatively simple structure of the epidermis and its direct interfacing with the environment renders it a good model for the study of structure and development of mucociliary epithelia, as well as of its alterations in the presence of toxicants. Highlights: The embryonic epidermis of Pelophylax lessonae reveals a good model for the study of mucociliary epithelia. The embryonic epidermis of Pelophylax lessonae is made of two layers and five cell types. In the basal layer, there are basal cells, and in the apical layer, ciliated, goblet, and small secretory cells are found, as well as ionocytes. Abstract

An in situ analysis of mucin secretions along the annual cycle was performed on the striped Venus clam, Chamelea gallina. Individuals of both sexes from an exploited stock of Margherita di Savoia (Southern Adriatic Sea, Central Mediterranean Sea) were made in June 2020 and 2021, and in January 2021 and 2022, representative of summer and winter seasons, respectively. Tissues from the foot and the gills were analyzed for histochemical and lectin-histochemical analyses. Staining with Periodic Acid-Schiff, Alcian Blue pH 2.5 and High-Iron-Diamine indicated that mucins from both the foot and the gills were acidic, mostly sulfated. Lectin-binding analyses with PNA, SBA, WGA, LTA, UEA-I, AAA, SNA, MAA-II and ConA indicated the presence of N-acetyl-glycosaminylated, mannosylated and fucosylated residuals in the saccharidic chains. In the gills, the amount of acidic and glycosaminylated residuals was higher in summer in both sexes, whereas fucosylation was similar along the sampling period and mannosylation was never observed. In the foot, both surface epithelial and subepidermal secreting cells increased sulfation in winter in males, but not in females. Glycosaminylation and fucosylation were observed only in the surface cells of males. Mannosylated residuals were observed in all the foot cell types in both sexes. It is hypothesized that the observed qualitative and quantitative variations in mucin secretion is linked to the reproductive cycle. The mucocytes present in the gill filaments of the clam produce an acid mucus, with sulfate residues and N-acetylglucosamine and fucose chains. In the foot, the subepithelial mucocytes produce an acidic, sulfate secretion with mannosylated residuals. The foot epithelium shows an acidic, sulfated mucus composition with N-acetylglucosamine, fucose and mannose chains. The results show that males have greater variability in mucus composition. Abstract

Background/objectives: The aim of the present study was to validate a short questionnaire on habitual dietary salt intake, to quickly and easily identify individuals whose salt consumption exceeds recommended levels. Subjects/methods: A total of 1131 hypertensive subjects participating in the MINISAL-SIIA study were included in the analysis. Anthropometric indexes, blood pressure, and 24-h urinary sodium excretion (NaU) were measured. A fixed-sequence questionnaire on dietary salt intake was administered. Results: NaU was significantly associated with scores, with a linear association across categories (p for trend <0.0001). In addition, participants who achieved a total score above the median value (eight points) had significantly higher NaU than those whose score was below median (p < 0.0001). In the total sample, the prevalence of “high NaU” (NaU > 85 mmol/day) and “very high NaU” (NaU > 170 mmol/day) was 86 and 35%, respectively. The score of the questionnaire had a significant ability to detect both “high NaU”—with a specificity of 95% at the score of 10 points—and “very high NaU”—with a specificity of 99.6% at score of 13 points. Conclusions: The main results of the study indicates that a higher score of this short questionnaire is distinctive of habitual high salt consumption in hypertensive patients.

12. Verification of the Code to Calculate Duct Flow Affected by External Magnetic Field

Abstract

In this paper, the authors present the results of software verification for solving magnetohydrodynamic problem in duct exposed to constant magnetic fields. The proposed approach uses the following open source software: OpenFOAM for solving problems of continuum mechanics using the finite volume method, Elmer for solving magnetic field distribution based on the finite element method, and EOF-library for data exchange between these two programs. The verification results were demonstrated by fluid flow in a square duct exposed to constant uniform spanwise magnetic field. The research was carried out with a laminar fluid flow, which makes it similar to the Hartmann's problem. The existing experience of calculating such problems, their verification and application were discussed. The paper provides a brief mathematical description of the proposed solution and basic procedures for implementing the code proposed by the authors. At the first stage of verification, the comparison of fluid velocity distribution results at Hartmann’s numbers equal to 1, 10, 20 and 50 was demonstrated. These results were obtained by means of proposed software, an analytical solution, and a test problem provided by OpenFOAM developers for two-dimensional case. At the second stage of software verification, sufficient convergence of the results was shown for fluid velocity distribution in the three-dimensional case of the Hartmann’s problem compared with the OpenFOAM test problem data and the results obtained by Comsol Multiphisics and ANSYS. As a result, distributions of the fluid flow velocity between Hartmann’s walls were obtained for various study cases: a two-dimensional problem, a three-dimensional problem with electrically insulated walls, and a three-dimensional problem with walls having infinite electrical conductivity. The last stage of the study corresponds to assessing of software performance in comparison with the built-in OpenFOAM solver and commercial software Comsol Multiphysics and ANSYS. It was found that the proposed approach takes more time to calculate these problems than the built-in OpenFOAM solver, but less than Comsol. However, the problem formulation in EOF-library allows solving problems with complex geometry, which is not available in the built-in OpenFOAM solver. In conclusion, analysis of computation performance with parallelization was carried out. It showed significant reducing of computation time with the help of EOF-library in comparison with the commercial software Comsol and ANSYS. © 2021 Leibniz University. All right reserved. Abstract

A double-strip grating leaky-wave antenna, consisting of two strips per unit cell, is analyzed. By properly placing the two metal strips within the unit cell, the stop-band behavior exhibited at broadside scan in the single-strip grating antenna may be significantly reduced, and almost eliminated. This stop-band behavior is characteristic of all periodic leaky-wave antennas having a single strip per unit cell, and results in a drastic increase in the attenuation rate of the leaky wave as the beam is scanned to broadside. By nearly eliminating this stop-band behavior, the double-strip leaky-wave antenna is able to scan from backward end fire to forward end fire without any large frequency regions of high attenuation. An approximate design rule for the double-strip antenna is discussed, and results are presented to show how the antenna may be further optimized to achieve the minimum possible variation in attenuation as the beam is scanned through broadside. Although the stop-band behavior is never completely eliminated with the addition of the extra strip, the optimum design shows an almost negligible region of rapidly varying attenuation near broadside.

Abstract

[EN] A systematic procedure for the efficient design of folded waveguide comb-line filters is presented. The proposed strategy is based on dividing the design process in more simple stages, in order to reduce the number of variables to be optimized in each step of the design process. The electrical response of an equivalent circuit model of the waveguide component considered in each step is used as a target response. Moreover, a method for obtaining an initial value for some key dimensions of the filter is also addressed. Finally, an S-band 6-pole folded comb-line filter has been successfully designed following the proposed design strategy.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of resistant hypertension (RH), allowing for adherence to appropriate lifestyle measures according to European Society of Hypertension-European Society of Cardiology (ESH-ESC) 2013 guidelines, in a sample of 1284 hypertensive subjects participating at the MINISAL-SIIA study. Hypertensive patients were recruited in 47 Italian centres, recognised by the Italian Society of Hypertension. Anthropometric indexes, blood pressure and 24-h urinary sodium (Na24h) and potassium (K24h) excretion were measured. Data on antihypertensive therapy were available for 1177 (92%) subjects. The population was divided into three groups (North, Central and South), according to their geographical location. Accounting only at the treatment criteria, the prevalence of RH was 8.2% (96/1177). Abstract

A simple and effective computerized optimization procedure for microwave filters is discussed. The basic idea is to integrate a fast and accurate electromagnetic (EM) solver, a filter design strategy, and two different optimization algorithms. The structural parameters to be modified are then chosen with the objective of improving the interaction between the EM solver and the optimization process. A simple example is discussed in detail indicating how the procedure is very simple and effective. Index Terms - Computer-aided design, optimization, waveguide filter design.

Abstract

Background: Inadequate blood pressure control and poor adherence to treatment remain among the major limitations in the management of hypertensive patients, particularly of those at high risk of cardiovascular events. Preliminary evidence suggests that home blood pressure telemonitoring (HBPT) might help increasing the chance of achieving blood pressure targets and improve patient’s therapeutic adherence. However, all these potential advantages of HBPT have not yet been fully investigated.Methods/design: The purpose of this open label, parallel group, randomized, controlled study is to assess whether, in patients with high cardiovascular risk (treated or untreated essential arterial hypertension - both in the office and in ambulatory conditions over 24 h - and metabolic syndrome), long-term (48 weeks) blood pressure control is more effective when based on HBPT and on the feedback to patients by their doctor between visits, or when based exclusively on blood pressure determination during quarterly office visits (conventional management (CM)). A total of 252 patients will be enrolled and randomized to usual care (n=84) or HBPT (n=168). The primary study endpoint will be the rate of subjects achieving normal daytime ambulatory blood pressure targets (<135/85 mmHg) 24 weeks and 48 weeks after randomization. In addition, the study will assess the psychological determinants of adherence and persistence to drug therapy, through specific psychological tests administered during the course of the study. Other secondary study endpoints will be related to the impact of HBPT on additional clinical and economic outcomes (number of additional medical visits, direct costs of patient management, number of antihypertensive drugs prescribed, level of cardiovascular risk, degree of target organ damage and rate of cardiovascular events, regression of the metabolic syndrome). Abstract

Objectives: The U.L.I.S.S.E. study is aimed at describing older patients who are cared for in hospitals, home care or nursing homes in Italy. Design: The U.L.I.S.S.E. study is an observational multicenter prospective 1-year study. Setting: Overall, 23 acute geriatric or internal medicine hospital units, 11 home care services and 31 nursing homes participated in the study. Measurements: The patient’s evaluation was performed using comprehensive geriatric assessment instruments, i.e. the interRAI Minimum Data Set, while data on service characteristics were recorded using ad-hoc designed questionnaires. Results: The older subjects who are in need of acute and long term care in Italy have similar characteristics: their mean age is higher than 80 years, they have a high level of disability in ADL, an important multimorbidity, and are treated with several drugs. The prevalence of cognitive impairment is particularly high in nursing homes, where almost 70% of residents suffer from it and 40% have severe cognitive impairment. On the other hand, there is a shortage of health care services, which are heterogeneous and fragmented. Conclusions: Health care services for older people in Italy are currently inadequate to manage the complexity of the older patients. An important effort should be undertaken to create a more integrated health care system.

45. Halitosis as a product of hepatic disease

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated halitosis in patients suffering from hepatic disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five patients (12 males and 13 females) aged between 16 and 73 years who had undergone treatment for liver disease were included in this study. Three halimeter recordings were performed to measure methyl mercarptan and hydrogen sulphite. Mean values were calculated and compared with normal values (75-120 ppb). The level of significance was set at P < .05. RESULTS: Thirteen of the 25 subjects (52%) had normal Volatile Sulphur Compound (VSC) values (75-120 ppb). Twelve subjects (48%) recorded values ranging from 132 to 1112 ppb. There was no correlation between hepatic pathology and halitosis. Abstract

NiO is a p-type semiconductor widely studied for its promising implementation in chemo-optical gas sensors. Reducing/oxidizing gases induce a change in optical absorption of NiO. It has been found that Au doping induces a remarkable increase in the NiO sensitivity, and at the same time silica films obtained by the sol–gel technique have been demonstrated to be a suitable support matrix for gas-sensitive materials due to their extremely high specific surface area (up to 600 m² g⁻¹). The aim of this work is the synthesis of SiO₂ films containing both NiO and Au nanoparticles and their morphological and functional characterization as active gas-sensing materials suitable for optical detectors. The possibility to selectively recognize H2 and CO is studied exploiting the wavelength dependence of the gas-induced optical transmittance variation.
