An important theme of Andrew Marvell's poetry is his belief in the power of Providence in mens' lives. He seemed to prefer the allegory and his Mower poems, which portray the poet in a private sphere, are composed in a passive mode while his 'public' poems are active and allow him to assume the role of 'providential historiographer.' He is remembered as Cromwell's poet and it is in this role that his composition of historical poetry bears the greatest fruit.
