Hypothesis: Small scale Marangoni motors, which self-generate motion by inducing surface tension gradients on water interfaces through release of surface-active "fuels", have recently been proposed as self-powered mixing devices for low volume fluids. Such devices however, often show self-limiting lifespans due to the rapid saturation of surface-active agents. A potential solution to this is the use volatile surface-active agents which do not persist in their environment. Here we investigate menthyl acetate (MA) as a safe, inexpensive and non-persistent fuel for Marangoni motors., Experiments: MA was loaded asymmetrically into millimeter scale silicone sponges. Menthyl acetate reacts slowly with water to produce the volatile surface-active menthol, which induces surface tension gradients across the sponge to drive motion by the Marangoni effect. Videos were taken and trajectories determined by custom software. Superconducting spintronics explores the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism, sparking substantial interest in nonunitary superconductors as a platform for magneto-superconducting phenomena. However, identifying nonunitary superconductors remains challenging. We demonstrate that spin current driven by thermal gradients sensitively probes the nature of the condensate in nonunitary superconductors. Spin polarization of the condensate in momentum space induces the superconducting spin Seebeck effect, where a spin current is generated along thermal gradients without a thermoelectric charge current. Notably, the nonvanishing superconducting spin Seebeck effect provides a smoking gun evidence of nonunitary superconductivity because it reflects the spin polarization of the condensate in momentum space, irrespective of whether the net pair spin magnetization vanishes. At the same time, the spin chirality of the condensate induces the spin Nernst effect, where a spin current is generated perpendicular to thermal gradients in nonunitary superconductors. These spin caloritronic phenomena offer a definitive probe of nonunitary superconductors.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit unique properties and potential applications when reduced to one-dimensional (1D) nanoribbons (NRs), owing to quantum confinement and high edge densities. However, effective growth methods for self-aligned TMD NRs are still lacking. We demonstrate a versatile approach for lattice-guided growth of dense, aligned MoS 2 NR arrays via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on anisotropic sapphire substrates, without tailored surface steps. This method enables the synthesis of NRs with widths below 10 nanometers and longitudinal axis parallel to the zigzag direction, being also extensible to the growth of WS 2 NRs and MoS 2 -WS 2 heteronanoribbons. Growth is influenced by both substrate and CVD temperature, indicating the role of anisotropic precursor diffusion and substrate interaction. The 1D nature of the NRs was asserted by the observation of Coulomb blockade at low temperatures. Pronounced catalytic activity was observed at the edges of the NRs, indicating their promise for efficient catalysis.

Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of cholera, displays remarkable adaptability to diverse environmental conditions through morphological changes that enhance its pathogenicity and influence the global epidemiology of the disease. This study examines the motility differences between filamentous and comma-shaped forms of the V. cholerae O1 strain under various viscosity conditions. Utilizing the El Tor strain, we induced filamentous transformation and conducted a comparative analysis with the canonical comma-shaped morphology. Our methodology involved assessing motility patterns, swimming speeds, rotation rates, kinematics, and reversal frequencies using dark-field microscopy and high-speed imaging techniques. The results show that filamentous V. cholerae cells retain enhanced motility in viscous environments, indicating an evolutionary adaptation for survival in varied habitats, particularly the human gastrointestinal tract. Filamentous forms exhibited increased reversal behavior at mucin interfaces, suggesting an advantage in penetrating the mucus layer. Thermoelectric technology plays an important role in developing sustainable clean energy and reducing carbon emissions, offering new opportunities to alleviate current energy and environmental crises. Nowadays, GeTe has emerged as a highly promising thermoelectric candidate for mid-temperature applications, due to its remarkable thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT ) of 2.7. This review presents a thorough overview of the advancements in GeTe thermoelectric materials, meticulously detailing the crystal structure, chemical bonding characteristics, band structure, and phonon dynamics to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that contribute to their exceptional performance. Moreover, the phase transition in GeTe introduces unique degrees of freedom that enable multiple pathways for property optimization. In terms of electrical properties, noticeable enhancement can be realized through strategies such as band structure modulation, carrier concentration engineering, and vacancy engineering. For phonon transport properties, by incorporating defect structures with varying dimensions and constructing multi-scale hierarchical architectures, phonons can be effectively scattered across different wavelengths. Additionally, we provide a summary of current research on devices and modules of GeTe. Humans exploit motor synergies for motor control; however, how they emerge during motor learning is not clearly understood. Few studies have dealt with the computational mechanism for generating synergies. Previously, optimal control generated synergistic motion for the upper limb; however, it has not yet been applied to the high-dimensional whole-body system. We investigated the emergence of synergies through deep reinforcement learning of whole-body locomotion tasks. We carried out a joint-space synergy analysis on whole-body control solutions for walking and running agents in simulated environments. Although a synergy constraint was never encoded into the reward function, the synergy emerged during the learning of walking and running tasks. To investigate the effect of gait symmetry on synergy emergence, we varied the weight level of symmetry loss. Interestingly, increasing the weight of symmetry loss resulted in increased energy efficiency and synergetic motion patterns concurrently. These results illustrate the correlation between motor synergy, energy efficiency, and gait symmetry in whole-body motor learning, reflecting that deep reinforcement learning can generate synergistic gait for highly redundant joint systems, similar to human motor control. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of Chryseobacterium sp. strain KCF3-3, isolated from the body surface of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus . The de novo assembly revealed a chromosome size of 5,623,437 bp with an estimated 4,939 open reading frames.

The scarcity of seed sludge poses a significant barrier to the advancement of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process. In this investigation, two alternative sludge (anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) and activated flocculent sludge (AFS)) were employed to start up the anammox process in internal circulation (IC) reactors with the hydroxyapatite (HAP) strategy. Both reactors achieved rapid start-up on days 83 and 53, respectively. Subsequently, a nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 1.34 gN/L/d was attained at a nitrogen loading rate (NLR) of 1.39 gN/L/d on days 107 and 81 correspondingly. The analysis of granular properties revealed that the anammox granular sludge (AMXGS) transformed from AGS exhibited superior granular size distribution and settling performance. Furthermore, the assessment of microbial community structure demonstrated that inoculating AFS was capable of enriching anammox bacteria (AnAOB) in a shorter time. Last but most importantly, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of the distinct granulation routes of AGS and AFS. AGS predominantly underwent a "broken-adsorption-granulation" process, whereas AFS exhibited not only a typical "adsorption-granulation" process but also a "biofilm growth-granulation" cycle process. In this study, a novel covalent organic framework-modified silica-gel composite (Si-COF) was synthesized for the adsorption of palladium [Pd(II)], zirconium [Zr(IV)], and molybdenum [Mo(VI)] from nitric acid solutions and its adsorption behaviors were systemically investigated under the effects of contact time, nitric acid concentration, solution temperature and others. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model governed the adsorption of these metal ions onto the Si-COF composite, and the Langmuir isotherm model well-matched with the experimental data, with maximum adsorption capacities of 0.588, 0.221, and 0.417 mmol/g for Pd(II), Zr(IV) and Mo(VI), respectively. In recent years, with the global rise in awareness regarding carbon neutrality, the treatment of wastewater in rural areas is increasingly oriented towards energy conservation, emission reduction, low-carbon output, and resource utilization. This paper provides an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the current low-carbon treatment process of low-carbon treatment for rural wastewater. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are increasingly being considered as a viable option for treating wastewater in rural regions. In pursuit of carbon neutrality, advanced carbon-neutral bioprocesses are regarded as the prospective trajectory for achieving carbon-neutral treatment of rural wastewater. The incorporation of CWs with emerging biotechnologies such as sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification (SAD), pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification (PAD), and anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) enables efficient removal of nitrogen and phosphorus from rural wastewater. The advancement of CWs towards improved removal of organic and inorganic pollutants, sustainability, minimal energy consumption, and low carbon emissions is widely recognized as a viable low-carbon approach for achieving carbon-neutral treatment of rural wastewater. Ischemic heart disease is the main global cause of death in the world. Abnormal sulfide catabolism, especially hydrogen sulfide accumulation, impedes mitochondrial respiration and worsens the prognosis after ischemic insults, but the substantial therapeutic strategy has not been established. Non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma irradiation therapy is attracted attention as it exerts beneficial effects by producing various reactive molecular species. Growing evidence has suggested that supersulfides, formed by catenation of sulfur atoms, contribute to various biological processes involving electron transfer in cells. Here, we report that non-thermal plasma-irradiated cysteine (Cys∗) protects mouse hearts against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury by preventing supersulfide catabolism. Cys∗ has a weak but long-lasting supersulfide activity, and the treatment of rat cardiomyocytes with Cys∗ prevents mitochondrial dysfunction after hypoxic stress. Cys∗ increases sulfide-quinone oxidoreductase (SQOR), and silencing SQOR abolishes Cys∗-induced supersulfide formation and cytoprotection. Local administration of mouse hearts with Cys∗ significantly reduces infarct size with preserving supersulfide levels after I/R. We used a neuromusculoskeletal model of bipedal walking to examine the effects of foot-ground friction conditions and gait patterns on slip- and trip-induced falls. We developed three two-dimensional neuro-musculoskeletal models in a self-organized manner representing young adults, elderly non-fallers, and elderly fallers. We simulated walking under different foot-ground friction conditions. The static friction coefficient between the foot and the ground was varied from 0.05 to 2.0. Under low friction conditions, the three gait models demonstrated slip-induced falls. The elderly faller model experienced the most slip. This is because the RCOF was higher in the elderly faller model due to its short stride length but much smaller foot clearance. Under high friction conditions, only the elderly faller model demonstrated trip-induced falls. Based on the analysis using the margin of stability, the forward postural stability of the model gradually decreased under high-friction conditions, with the toe of the swing foot contacting the ground and subsequently falling forward. These results imply that there is an optimal coefficient of friction for the ground to prevent slip- and trip-induced falls by people with less stable gaits, which may provide new insights into the design of shoes and floor surfaces for the elderly., Competing Interests: Competing interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2024. Like the crystallization of water to ice, magnetic transition occurs at a critical temperature after the slowing down of dynamically fluctuating short-range correlated spins. Here, we report a unique type of magnetic transition characterized by a linear increase in the volume fraction of unconventional static short-range-ordered spin clusters, which triggered a transition into a long-range order at a threshold fraction perfectly matching the bond percolation theory in a new quantum antiferromagnet of pseudo-trigonal Cu 4 (OH) 6 Cl 2 . Static short-range order appeared in its Kagome lattice plane below ca. 20 K from a pool of coexisting spin liquid, linearly increasing its fraction to 0.492(8), then all Kagome spins transitioned into a stable two-dimensional spin order at T N  = 5.5 K. Inspection on the magnetic interactions and quantum magnetism revealed an intrinsic link to the spin liquid material Herbertsmithite, ZnCu 3 (OH) 6 Cl 2 . The unconventional static nature of the short-range order was inferred to be due to a pinning effect by the strongly correlated coexisting spin liquids. This work presents a unique magnetic system to demonstrate a complete bond percolation process toward the critical transition. Many bacteria swim in liquids and move over solid surfaces by rotating flagella. The bacterial flagellum is a supramolecular protein complex that is composed of about 30 different flagellar proteins ranging from a few to tens of thousands. Despite structural and functional diversities of the flagella among motile bacteria, the flagellum commonly consists of a membrane-embedded rotary motor fueled by an ion motive force across the cytoplasmic membrane, a universal joint, and a helical propeller that extends several micrometers beyond the cell surface. The flagellar motor consists of a rotor and several stator units, each of which acts as a transmembrane ion channel complex that converts the ion flux through the channel into the mechanical work required for force generation. The rotor ring complex is equipped with a reversible gear that is regulated by chemotactic signal transduction pathways. As a result, bacteria can move to more desirable locations in response to environmental changes. Recent high-resolution structural analyses of flagella using cryo-electron microscopy have provided deep insights into the assembly, rotation, and directional switching mechanisms of the flagellar motor complex. In this review article, we describe the current understanding of the structure and dynamics of the bacterial flagellum.

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are effective sewage treatment technologies, yet the differences in virus removal efficiency between aerobic (AeMBR) and anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR), remain inadequately understood. This study compared the virus removal efficiency of AeMBR and AnMBR, focusing on the interactions between aerobic (AeS) and anaerobic (AnS) activated sludge and viruses in the sewage treatment process. Results showed average log removal values (LRVs) for MS2 of 2.53 ± 0.54 in AeMBR and 1.64 ± 0.90 in AnMBR due to the higher virus inactivation in the aerobic mixed liquor. The virus concentration in AnS was greater than in AeS, consistent with the predictions from the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) were key to virus adsorption in AeS, while tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) were significant in AnS. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the pivotal role of vaccines in mitigating the devastating impact of the virus. In Thailand, the vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2 began on 28 February 2021, initially prioritizing healthcare professionals before expanding into a nationwide effort on 7 June 2021. This study employs a mathematical model of COVID-19 transmission with vaccination to analyze the impact of Thailand's COVID-19 vaccination program from 1 March 2021 to 31 December 2022. We specifically assess the potential loss of lives and occurrence of severe infections across various age groups in a hypothetical scenario where vaccines were not administered. By fitting our model with officially reported COVID-19 death data, our analysis reveals that vaccination efforts prevented a total of 300,234 deaths (95% confidence interval: 295,938-304,349) and averted 1.60 million severe COVID-19 infections (95% confidence interval: 1.54-1.65 million). Notably, the elderly population over 80 years old benefited the most from vaccination, with an estimated 84,518 lives saved, constituting 4.28% of this age group. Furthermore, individuals aged between 70 and 74 years experienced the highest reduction in severe infections, with vaccination potentially preventing 8.35% of this age bracket from developing severe COVID-19.

The increasing occurrence of hospital-associated infections, particularly bacteremia, caused by extensively drug-resistant (XDR) carbapenemase-producing colistin-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae highlights a critical requirement to discover new therapeutic alternatives. Bacteriophages having host-specific bacteriolytic effects are promising alternatives for combating these pathogens. Among 12 phages isolated from public wastewater in Thailand, two phages-vB_kpnM_05 (myovirus) and vB_kpnP_08 (podovirus) showed broad-host range, producing bacteriolytic activities against 81.3% (n = 26) and 78.1% (n = 25) of 32 XDR carbapenemase-producing colistin-resistant K. pneumoniae, with capsular types-K15, K17, K50, K51, K52/wzi-50 and K2/wzi-2. Both phages showed short replication times, large burst sizes with rapid adsorptions. They exhibited significant stability under various environmental conditions. Genomic analysis revealed that both phages are genetically distinct phages from Myoviridae and Podoviridae family, with the lack of toxin, virulence, lysogeny and antibiotic resistance genes. These characteristics highlighted their promising potential for utilizing in phage therapy for combating XDR K. pneumoniae. Although phage cocktail combining vB_kpnM_05 and vB_kpnP_08 provided significant bacteriolysis for longer duration (8 h) than its monophage (6 h), bacterial regrowth was observed which suggested an evitable development of phage resistance under phages' selection pressures. Future study will be undertaken to elucidate the precise mechanisms by which these XDR K. pneumoniae developed phage resistance and their associated fitness cost. Remarkably, combining phage cocktail with amikacin at their sub-inhibitory concentrations produced potent synergy by completely suppressing bacterial regrowth in vitro. Our study demonstrated the significant therapeutic and prophylactic effectiveness of a phage cocktail-amikacin combination as a promising alternative strategy for overcoming bacteremia associated with XDR K. pneumoniae having carbapenemase and colistin resistance in vivo., Competing Interests: Declaration. Inflammatory microenvironments often become acidic (pH < 7.4) due to tissue oxygen deprivation and lactate release in glycolysis by activated immune cells. Although neutrophils are known to accumulate in such microenvironments, the effects of pH on their migration are not fully understood. Here, we first investigated the pH control around cultured cells with a microfluidic device, which was equipped with two gas channels above three parallel media channels. By supplying gas mixtures with predefined carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentrations to the gas channels, the gas exchange adjusted the dissolved CO 2 and affected the chemical equilibrium of sodium hydrogen carbonate in the cell culture medium. A pH gradient from 8.3 to 6.8 was generated along the media channels when gas mixtures containing 1% and 50% CO 2 were supplied to the left and right gas channels, respectively. Neutrophil-like differentiated human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60) were then seeded to the fibronectin-coated media channels and their migratory behaviors were quantified while varying the pH. The cell migration became more active and faster under high pH than under low pH conditions. However, no directional migration along the pH gradient was detected during the three-hour observation. Introduction: When humans grasp an object, they are capable of recognizing its characteristics, such as its stiffness and shape, through the sensation of their hands. They can also determine their level of confidence in the estimated object properties. In this study, we developed a method for multi-fingered hands to estimate both physical and geometric properties, such as the stiffness and shape of an object. Their confidence levels were measured using proprioceptive signals, such as joint angles and velocity., Method: We have developed a learning framework based on probabilistic inference that does not necessitate hyperparameters to maintain equilibrium between the estimation of diverse types of properties. Using this framework, we have implemented recurrent neural networks that estimate the stiffness and shape of grasped objects with their uncertainty in real time., Results: We demonstrated that the trained neural networks are capable of representing the confidence level of estimation that includes the degree of uncertainty and task difficulty in the form of variance and entropy., Discussion: We believe that this approach will contribute to reliable state estimation. Novel van der Waals (vdW) contacts formed by layered Bi 2 Te 3 are found effective in improving the performance of WSe 2 pMOSFETs. As compared with conventional transition metal-based Ni/Au S/D contacts, over 10 3 times on-state current improvement is achieved. vdW interface formation between Bi 2 Te 3 and WSe 2 is confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning transmission electron microscope observation. An atomically flat Bi 2 Te 3 /WSe 2 vdW interface, where the number of defects could be reduced as small as possible, contributes to the suppression of Fermi-level pinning caused by defect-induced gap states. Moreover, the semimetal-like characteristics of Bi 2 Te 3 are also effective in minimizing the impact of metal-induced gap states. These features offer WSe 2 pMOSFETs with exceptional S/D junction characteristics, including suppressed off-state leakage and a higher on-off ratio. In addition, it is found that WSe 2 pMOSFETs with Bi 2 Te 3 S/D contacts have excellent thermal stability, maintaining device performance even after 400 °C annealing, which is very promising for CMOS back-end-of-line application. Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected lives and dental treatment. Aerosols and droplets generated during dental treatment present a risk of infection for dental care workers. However, detailed elucidation of the conditions under which those are generated has yet to be presented, and no clear countermeasures for protection have been established. The present study aimed to clarify the process of generation of aerosol and droplets in dental treatment, as well as their dynamics for establishment of effective countermeasures and protection strategies., Methods: Images were obtained using a high-speed camera of aerosol and droplets generated during dental treatments performed on a mannequin. The effects of intraoral vacuum and extraoral vacuum to reduce those, as well as splash range with different body position were examined. Quantum devices such as spin qubits have been extensively investigated in electrostatically confined quantum dots using high-quality semiconductor heterostructures like GaAs and Si. Here, we present a demonstration of electrostatically forming the quantum dots in ZnO heterostructures. Through the transport measurement, we uncover the distinctive signature of the Kondo effect independent of the even-odd electron number parity, which contrasts with the typical behavior of the Kondo effect in GaAs. By analyzing temperature and magnetic field dependences, we find that the absence of the even-odd parity in the Kondo effect is not straightforwardly interpreted by the considerations developed for conventional semiconductors. We propose that, based on the unique parameters of ZnO, electron correlation likely plays a fundamental role in this observation. Our study not only clarifies the physics of correlated electrons in the quantum dot but also holds promise for applications in quantum devices, leveraging the unique features of ZnO., (© 2024. Nutrient resources contained in human urine have great potential to alleviate global agricultural fertilizer demand. Microbial nitrification is a recognized strategy for stabilizing urine ammonia into ammonium nitrate, a common fertilizer worldwide, but faces a core bottleneck of process instability due to microbial inhibition. This study reports a new approach by developing a hybrid oxidation process involving three stages-microbial ammonia oxidation, chemical nitrite oxidation and microbial nitrite oxidation. Candidatus Nitrosoglobus, a γ -proteobacterial ammonia oxidizer highly tolerant to free nitrous acid, was introduced in the first stage to oxidize half of the total ammonia in the influent (8 g NH 4 -N/L) to nitrite. The nitrite was then chemically oxidized by using hydrogen peroxide via a rapid chemical reaction to form nitrate. The third stage, microbial nitrite oxidation, was employed to ensure the complete removal of residual nitrite following chemical oxidation. The overall concept demonstrated in this work showcased the robust performance of the hybrid system. Moreover, the system also had a dual advantage in achieving antimicrobial ability in the first and second stages, making treated urine a safe fertilizer.+ -N/L) to nitrite. SiO2 aggregates in styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) were observed using ptychographic X-ray computed tomography (PXCT). The rubber composites were illuminated with X-rays focused by total reflection focusing mirrors, and the ptychographic diffraction patterns were collected using a CITIUS detector in the range of -75° to +75° angle of incidence. The projection images of the rubber composites were reconstructed with a two-dimensional resolution of 76 nm, and no significant structural changes were observed during the PXCT measurements. A three-dimensional image of the rubber composite was reconstructed with an isotropic resolution of 98 nm. Organic pollutants can alter the physicochemical properties and microbial communities of water bodies. In water contaminated with organic pollutants, the unique extracellular electron transfer mechanisms that promote sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation in tri-electrode microbial electrochemical systems (TE-MES) may be impacted. To simulate biodegradable organic matter contamination, glucose (GLU) was added. Metagenomics and metabolomics were used to analyze changes in microbial community structure, metabolism, and function on the electrodes. GLU addition accelerated water quality deterioration, and enhanced SMX degradation. Microbial taxa on the electrodes experienced selective enrichment. Notably, methanogens and SMX-degrading bacteria were enriched, while denitrifying bacteria and antibiotic-resistant bacteria were suppressed. Enriched metabolites were linked to 15 metabolic pathways and other functions like microbial signaling and genetics. Non-redundant genes also clustered in metabolic pathways, aligning with metabolite enrichment results. Additional pathways involved life cycle processes and protein interactions. Enzymes related to carbon metabolism, particularly glycoside hydrolases, increased significantly, indicating a shift in carbon metabolism on microbial electrodes after GLU addition. The abundance of intracellular electron transfer enzymes rose, while outer membrane proteins decreased. This contrasts with the typical TE-MES mechanism where outer membrane proteins facilitate SMX degradation. The presence of organic pollution may shift SMX degradation from an extracellular electrochemical process to an intracellular metabolic process, possibly involving co-metabolism with simple organic compounds. A locomotor system that can function across different environmental conditions and produce a range of performances is one of the most critical abilities needed for extant and extinct animals in order to survive and maximise their competitive fitness. Recent engineering-inspired paleontological studies have reconstructed feasible locomotor patterns in extinct animals. However, it is still challenging to describe how extinct animals successfully adjust their locomotor patterns to new situations (e.g., changes in locomotor speed and morphology). In this study, we develop a novel reconstruction method based on a bio-inspired control system. We focus on plesiosaurs, an extinct aquatic reptile group which has two pairs of flipper-shaped limbs, and demonstrate that a highly optimised, flexible locomotor pattern for all four flippers can be reconstructed based on a decentralized control scheme formulated from extant animals' locomotion. The results of our robotic experiments show that a simple, local sensory feedback mechanism allows the plesiosaur-like robot to exploit the fluid flow between the flippers and generate efficient swimming patterns in response to changes in locomotor conditions. In this study, we developed a lightweight shoe sensor system equipped with four high-capacity, compact triaxial force sensors and an inertial measurement unit. Remarkably, this system enabled measurements of localized three-directional ground reaction forces (GRFs) at each sensor position (heel, first and fifth metatarsal heads, and toe) and estimations of stride length and toe clearance during walking. Compared to conventional optical motion analysis systems, the developed sensor system provided relatively accurate results for stride length and minimum toe clearance. To test the performance of the system, 15 older and 8 young adults were instructed to walk along a straight line while wearing the system. The results reveal that compared to the young adults, older adults exhibited lower localized GRF contributions from the heel and greater localized GRF contribution from the toe and fifth metatarsal locations. Furthermore, the older adults exhibited greater variability in their stride length and smaller toe clearance with greater variability compared to the young adults. These results underscore the effectiveness of the proposed gait analysis system in distinguishing the gait characteristics of young and older adults, potentially replacing traditional motion capture systems and force plates in gait analysis.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is involved in aerosol particles and droplets excreted from a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patient. Such aerosol particles or droplets including infectious virions can be attached on fomite, so fomite is not a negligible route for SARS-CoV-2 transmission within a community, especially in indoor environment. This necessarily evokes a need of fomite disinfection to remove virions, but the extent to which fomite disinfection breaks off virus transmission chain in indoor environment is still elusive. In this study, we evaluated the fomite disinfection effectiveness on COVID-19 case number using network analysis that reproduced the reported indoor outbreaks. In the established network, virus can move around not only human but also air and fomite while growing in human and decaying in air and on fomite, and infection success was determined based on the exposed virus amount and the equation of probability of infection. The simulation results have demonstrated that infectious virions on fomite should be kept less than a hundred to sufficiently reduce COVID-19 case, and every-hour disinfection was required to avoid stochastic increase in the infection case. Several associations between the built environment and COVID-19 case distribution have been identified in previous studies. However, few studies have explored the non-linear associations between the built environment and COVID-19 at the community level. This study employed the March 2022 Shanghai COVID-19 pandemic as a case study to examine the association between built-environment characteristics and the incidence of COVID-19. A non-linear modeling approach, namely the boosted regression tree model, was used to investigate this relationship. A multi-scale study was conducted at the community level based on buffers of 5-minute, 10-minute, and 15-minute walking distances. The main findings are as follows: (1) Relationships between built environment variables and COVID-19 case distribution vary across scales of analysis at the neighborhood level. (2) Significant non-linear associations exist between built-environment characteristics and COVID-19 case distribution at different scales. Population, housing price, normalized difference vegetation index, Shannon's diversity index, number of bus stops, floor-area ratio, and distance from the city center played important roles at different scales. Microrobots that can move through a network of blood vessels have promising medical applications. Blood contains a high volume fraction of blood cells, so in order for a microrobot to move through the blood, it must propel itself by rearranging the surrounding blood cells. However, swimming form effective for propulsion in blood is unknown. This study shows numerically that a surface-active microrobot, such as a squirmer, is more efficient in moving through blood than an inert microrobot. This is because the surface velocity of the microrobot steers the blood cells laterally, allowing them to propel themselves into the hole they are digging. When the microrobot size is comparable to a red blood cell or when the microrobot operates under a low Capillary number, the puller microrobot swims faster than the pusher microrobot. The trend reverses under considerably smaller microrobot sizes or high Capillary number scenarios. Additionally, the swimming speed is strongly dependent on the hematocrit and magnetic torque used to control the microrobot orientation. A comparative analysis between the squirmer and Janus squirmer models underscores the extensive applicability of the squirmer model. Motility is a hallmark of life's dynamic processes, enabling cells to actively chase prey, repair wounds, and shape organs. Recreating these intricate behaviors using well-defined molecules remains a major challenge at the intersection of biology, physics, and molecular engineering. Although the polymerization force of the actin cytoskeleton is characterized as a primary driver of cell motility, recapitulating this process in protocellular systems has proven elusive. The difficulty lies in the daunting task of distilling key components from motile cells and integrating them into model membranes in a physiologically relevant manner. To address this, we developed a method to optically control actin polymerization with high spatiotemporal precision within cell-mimetic lipid vesicles known as giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs). Within these active protocells, the reorganization of actin networks triggered outward membrane extensions as well as the unidirectional movement of GUVs at speeds of up to 0.43 μm/min, comparable to typical adherent mammalian cells. Notably, our findings reveal a synergistic interplay between branched and linear actin forms in promoting membrane protrusions, highlighting the cooperative nature of these cytoskeletal elements. This approach offers a powerful platform for unraveling the intricacies of cell migration, designing synthetic cells with active morphodynamics, and advancing bioengineering applications, such as self-propelled delivery systems and autonomous tissue-like materials.

Vacuum residue (VR) was copyrolysed with polyethylene (PE) or polystyrene (PS) in a batch reactor to investigate the corresponding synergistic pyrolytic interactions. The synergistic interactions between VR and plastic pyrolysates enhanced liquid and gas production while reducing coke formation, as compared with VR-only and plastic-only pyrolysis. The pyrolysis of 9:1 w/w VR: PE 3M (PE with M w = 3 MDa) and 9:1 w/w VR/PS 350K (PS with M w ≈ 350 kDa) mixtures produced oil in yields of 28.6 and 38.4 wt%, respectively, which exceeded those expected in the absence of synergistic interactions 1.12- and 1.29-fold, respectively. The corresponding coke yields were ~ 0.9 times lower than those expected in the absence of synergistic interactions. Moreover, copyrolysis synergistically increased the yields of oil-phase paraffins and olefins while decreasing that of aromatic compounds and was therefore concluded to enable effective VR utilisation and plastic recycling by enhancing liquid and gas production., (© 2024. Cellulase selectively recognizes cellulose surfaces and cleaves their β-1,4-glycosidic bonds. Combining hydrolysis using cellulase and fermentation can produce alternative fuels and chemical products. However, anaerobic bacteria produce only low levels of highly active cellulase complexes so-called cellulosomes. Therefore, we designed hybrid cellulase complexes from 49 biotinylated catalytic domain (CD) and 30 biotinylated cellulose-binding domain (CBD) libraries on streptavidin-conjugated nanoparticles to enhance cellulose hydrolysis by mimicking the cellulosome structure. The hybrid cellulase complex, incorporating both native CD and CBD, significantly improved reducing sugar production from cellulose compared to free native modular enzymes. The optimal CBD for each hybrid cellulase complex differed from that of the native enzyme. The most effective hybrid cellulase complex was observed with the combination of CD 6-4 from Thermobifida fusca YX and CBD 46 from the Bacillus halodurans C-125. The hybrid cellulase complex/CD 6-4 -CBD 46 and -CD 6-4 -CBD 2-5 combinations showed increased reducing sugar production. Similar results were also observed in microcrystalline cellulose degradation. Furthermore, clustering on nanoparticles enhanced enzyme thermostability.
