1. Impact of integration time steps of rain drop size distribution on their double-moment normalization: a case study in northern Benin

Abstract

This study analyzed the sensitivity of the double-moment normalization of rain drop size distributions (DSDs) to their integration time steps. Six DSD datasets measured at different integration time steps were modeled by the double-moment normalization method. Six couples of reference moments are used for the normalization. Three DSD models (gamma, generalized gamma and lognormal) are used for modeling. Statistical criteria are used to assess the estimation of the moments of the DSDs made by the models. As results, the analysis highlighted the dependence of the shape function parameters on the DSD integration time step. It is also noted that the three DSD models are well adapted to the data used. Nevertheless, the generalized gamma model is recommended because of the independence of the moment estimation errors with respect to the integration time step, which is not the case for the other models.

4. Application of Sentinel-2 Level-2A images for monitoring water surface in reservoirs in the semiarid region of Pernambuco — Brazil

Abstract

Remote sensing techniques offer effective and efficient alternatives for observing the spatiotemporal dynamics of surface water in reservoirs. This paper aimed to analyze the applicability of Sentinel-2 Level-2A satellite images from 2016 to 2024 for mapping and monitoring the extent of water surfaces in reservoirs in the Sertão region of Pernambuco state. An automatic, unsupervised, and non-parametric algorithm was employed, combining water indices with reflectance bands of optical images to identify water pixels. The results were compared with two datasets: in situ monitoring and MapBiomas. Issues with optical images affected by clouds over the reservoir and errors in classifying water pixels were noted. Generally, the algorithm tended to underestimate the extent of the water surface due to difficulty detecting water pixels at the edges of the reservoirs. To mitigate this issue, an artificial neural network (ANN) was applied to correct the underestimation bias. The bias correction improved the performance of the metrics when the size and representativeness of the calibration sample were sufficient for training and building the ANN model., As técnicas de sensoriamento remoto fornecem alternativas efetivas e eficientes para a observação da dinâmica espaçotemporal da água superficial em reservatórios. O objetivo deste artigo foi analisar a aplicabilidade de imagens do satélite Sentinel-2 de Nível 2A no período de 2016 a 2024 para o mapeamento e monitoramento da extensão da água superficial em reservatórios da região Sertão do estado de Pernambuco. Para tanto, foi utilizado um algoritmo automático não supervisionado e não paramétrico que faz a combinação de índices de água com bandas de reflectância de imagens ópticas para a identificação de pixels de água. Os resultados foram comparados com dois conjuntos de dados: monitoramento in situe MapBiomas. Problemas com imagens ópticas afetadas por nuvens sobre o reservatório e erros de classificação dos pixels de água foram notados. Os resultados mostraram que, de modo geral, o algoritmo apresentou uma tendência de subestimação da extensão da superfície hídrica, decorrente da dificuldade de detecção dos pixels de água nas bordas dos reservatórios. Para atenuar esse comportamento, aplicou-se Rede Neural Artificial para corrigir o viés de subestimação. A correção de viés resultou em ganho de desempenho das métricas para os casos em que o tamanho e a representatividade da amostra de calibração foram suficientes para o treinamento e construção do modelo de Rede Neural Artificial.

16. Spatial patterns of storm-induced landslides and their relation to rainfall anomaly maps

Abstract

Storm-induced landslides are a common hazard, but the link between their spatial pattern and rainfall properties is poorly understood, mostly because hillslope stability is modulated by under-constrained, spatially variable topographic, hydrological, and mechanical properties. Here, we use a long-term rainfall data set from the Japanese radar network to discuss why the landslide pattern caused by a major typhoon poorly correlates with the event rainfall but agrees with the event rainfall normalized by the 10-year return period rainfall amount, that is, a rainfall anomaly. This may be explained if the variability in hillslope properties has coevolved with the recent climate and can be accounted for with such normalization. Further, rock types seem to respond to rainfall anomalies at various timescales, favoring specific landslide geometries, and suggesting various hydrological properties in these zones. The computation of rainfall anomalies for multiple timescales may pave the way toward operational landslide forecasts in case of large storms.

20. Stochastic generation of precipitation fraction at high resolution with a multiscale constraint from satellite observations

Abstract

In this work, we propose a method to generate an ensemble of equiprobable fields of rain occurrence at high resolution (1 degrees/16 and 30 min) using a satellite observational constraint. Satellite observations are used to constrain the spatio-temporal variations of the precipitation fraction at various scales. Spatio-temporal averages at scales coarser than 1 degrees and 8 h are deterministically derived from the satellite observations. At finer scales, variations are partially stochastically generated by perturbation of wavelet coefficients obtained through a three-dimensional discrete Haar wavelet orthogonal decomposition. The proposed method can be viewed either as stochastic weather generation or as stochastic downscaling with a multiscale observational constraint. The observational constraint used here is a high-resolution precipitation index derived from infrared cloud top temperature. As a proof of concept, the method is used here to generate a 300-member annual ensemble covering a 12,000 km(2) area in Burkina Faso in West Africa, with a parametrization derived from ground radar observations. The stochastically generated fields aim at reproducing the multiscale statistical properties of the true precipitation field (as observed by a ground radar). The ensemble mean is an optimal - in terms of mean squared error - estimation of the true precipitation fraction, with the uncertainty quantified by the ensemble dispersion.

Abstract

In the West African Sahel, two paradoxical hydrological behaviors have occurred during the last five decades. The first paradox was observed during the 1968&ndash, 1990s &lsquo, Great Drought&rsquo, period, during which runoff significantly increased. The second paradox appeared during the subsequent period of rainfall recovery (i.e., since the 1990s), during which the runoff coefficient continued to increase despite the general re-greening of the Sahel. This paper reviews and synthesizes the literature on the drivers of these paradoxical behaviors, focusing on recent works in the West African Sahelo/Sudanian strip, and upscaling the hydrological processes through an analysis of recent data from two representative areas of this region. This paper helps better determine the respective roles played by Land Use/Land Cover Changes (LULCC), the evolution of rainfall intensity and the occurrence of extreme rainfall events in these hydrological paradoxes. Both the literature review and recent data converge in indicating that the first Sahelian hydrological paradox was mostly driven by LULCC, while the second paradox has been caused by both LULCC and climate evolution, mainly the recent increase in rainfall intensity.

Abstract

West Africa is a region in fast transition from climate, demography, and land use perspectives. In this context, the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA)–Couplage de l'Atmosphère Tropicale et du Cycle eco-Hydrologique (CATCH) long-term regional observatory was developed to monitor the impacts of global change on the critical zone of West Africa and to better understand its current and future dynamics. The observatory is organized into three thematic axes, which drive the observation and instrumentation strategy: (i) analyze the long-term evolution of eco-hydrosystems from a regional perspective; (ii) better understand critical zone processes and their variability; and (iii) meet socioeconomic and development needs. To achieve these goals, the observatory has gathered data since 1990 from four densely instrumented mesoscale sites (∼104 km2 each), located at different latitudes (Benin, Niger, Mali, and Senegal) so as to sample the sharp eco-climatic gradient that is characteristic of the region. Simultaneous monitoring of the vegetation cover and of various components of the water balance at these four sites has provided new insights into the seemingly paradoxical eco-hydrological changes observed in the Sahel during the last decades: groundwater recharge and/or runoff intensification despite rainfall deficit and subsequent re-greening with still increasing runoff. Hydrological processes and the role of certain key landscape features are highlighted, as well as the importance of an appropriate description of soil and subsoil characteristics. Applications of these scientific results for sustainable development issues are proposed. Finally, detecting and attributing eco-hydrological changes and identifying possible regime shifts in the hydrologic cycle are the next challenges that need to be faced.

Abstract

A simple scheme that is based on the shape and intensity of the radar bright band is used to infer the density of hydrometeors just above the freezing level in Sahelian mesoscale convective systems (MCS). Four MCS jointly observed by a ground-based X-band radar and by an instrumented aircraft as part of the Megha-Tropiques algorithm-validation campaign during August 2010 in Niamey, Niger, are analyzed. The instrumented aircraft (with a 94-GHz radar and various optical probes on board) provided mass-diameter laws for the particles sampled during the flights. The mass-diameter laws derived from the ground-radar vertical profile of reflectivity (VPR) for each flight are compared with those derived from the airborne measurements. The density laws derived by both methods are consistent and encourage further use of the simple VPR scheme to quantify hydrometeor density laws and their variability for various analyses (microphysical processes and icy-hydrometeor scattering and radiative properties).

Abstract

As part of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) field campaign an X-band dual-polarization Doppler radar was deployed in Benin, West-Africa, in 2006 and 2007, together with a reinforced rain gauge network and several optical disdrometers. Based on this data set, a comparative study of several rainfall estimators that use X-band polarimetric radar data is presented. In tropical convective systems as encountered in Benin, microwave attenuation by rain is significant and quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) at X-band is a challenge. Here, several algorithms based on the combined use of reflectivity, differential reflectivity and differential phase shift are evaluated against rain gauges and disdrometers. Four rainfall estimators were tested on twelve rainy events: the use of attenuation corrected reflectivity only (estimator R(Z(H))), the use of the specific phase shift only R(K-DP), the combination of specific phase shift and differential reflectivity R(K-DP,Z(DR)) and an estimator that uses three radar parameters R(Z(H), Z(DR),K-DP). The coefficients of the power law relationships between rain rate and radar variables were adjusted either based on disdrometer data and simulation, or on radar-gauges observations. The three polarimetric based algorithms with coefficients predetermined on observations outperform the R(Z(H)) estimator for rain rates above 10 mm/h which explain most of the rainfall in the studied region. For the highest rain rates (above 30 mm/h) R(K-DP) shows even better scores, and given its performances and its simplicity of implementation, is recommended. The radar based retrieval of two parameters of the rain drop size distribution, the normalized intercept parameter N-w and the volumetric median diameter D-m was evaluated on four rainy days thanks to disdrometers. The frequency distributions of the two parameters retrieved by the radar are very close to those observed with the disdrometer. N-w retrieval based on a combination of Z(H)-K-DP-Z(DR) works well whatever the a priori assumption made on the drop shapes. D-m retrieval based on Z(DR) alone performs well, but if satisfactory Z(DR) measurements are not available, the combination Z(H)-K-DP provides satisfactory results for both D-m and N-w if an appropriate a priori assumption on drop shape is made.

Abstract

Rainfall monitoring based on commercial terrestrial microwave links is tested for the first time in Burkina Faso, in Sahelian West Africa. In collaboration with one national cellular phone operator, Telecel Faso, the attenuation on a 29km long microwave link operating at 7GHz was monitored at 1s time rate for the monsoon season 2012. The time series of attenuation is transformed into rain rates and compared with rain gauge data. The method is successful in quantifying rainfall: 95% of the rainy days are detected. The correlation with the daily rain gauge series is 0.8, and the season bias is 6%. The correlation at the 5min time step within each event is also high. These results demonstrate the potential interest of exploiting national and regional wireless telecommunication networks for monitoring rainfall in Africa, where operational rain gauge networks are degrading and the hydrometeorological risk increasing.

Abstract

International audience; Characterising the error associated with satellite rainfall estimates based on space-borne passive and active microwave measurements is a major issue for many applications, such as water budget studies or assessment of natural hazards caused by extreme rainfall events. We focus here on the error structure of the Bayesian Rain retrieval Algorithm Including Neural Network (BRAIN), the algorithm that provides instantaneous quantitative precipitation estimates at the surface based on the MADRAS radiometer on board the Megha-Tropiques satellite. A version of BRAIN using data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) has been compared to reference values derived either from TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) or from a ground validation (GV) dataset. The ground-based measurements were provided by two densified rain-gauge networks in West Africa, using a geostatistical framework. The comparisons were carried out at the BRAIN retrieval scale for TMI (instantaneous and 12.5 km) and over a ten-year-long period. The primary contribution of this study is to provide some insight into the most significant error sources of satellite rainfall retrieval. This involves comparisons of rainfall detectability, distributions and spatial representativeness, as well as separation of systematic biases and random errors using Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale and Shape. In spite of their different sampling properties, the three rain estimates were found to detect rainfall consistently. The most important BRAIN-TMI error is due to the rain/no-rain delimitation which causes about 20% of volume rainfall loss relative to PR and GV. BRAIN-TMI presents a narrow PDF relative to GV and catches the spatial structure of the most active part of rain fields. The conditional bias is significant (e.g. +2 mm h−1 for light-moderate rain rates, −2 mm h−1 for rain rates greater than 8 mm h−1) and the overall bias is within 10%. The PR shows a significant underestimation for high rain rates with respect to GV. The proposed framework could be applied to the evaluation of other passive microwave sensors (SSMI, AMSR-E or MADRAS) or rainfall satellite products.

Abstract

During the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AM MA) field campaign. polarimetric weather radars, a ram-gauge network and disdrometers were available to analyse the convective systems and the rainfall in Benin In this impel a three-year dataset of drop size distributions is used to compute theoretical relationships between X-band polarimetric variables and the rain rate, adjusted lot the region of interest The variability of these relationships from storm to storm and between ram types is studied With an X-band polarimetric radar the ram rate can be retrieved from the differential specific phase shift K-DP the specific attenuation A(H), the reflectivity Z or differential reflectivity Z(DR) corrected for attenuation. or a combination of these variables. The set of coefficients needed to run the rain retrieval or the attenuation collection schemes under the conditions found in Benin are computed. The rain retrieval schemes are compared on the basis of simulations The retrievals based on one single propagative variable like K-DP or A(H) perform well Prelimmary results from direct comparisons between X-band polarimetric radar estimates and lain-gauges are consistent with the disdrometer-based analysis Copyright (C) 2010 Royal Meteorological Society
