We consider an extension of strategic normal form games with a phase of negotiations before the actual play of the game, where players can make binding offers for transfer of utilities to other players after the play of the game, in order to provide additional incentives for each other to play designated strategies. Such offers are conditional on the recipients playing the specified strategies and they effect transformations of the payoff matrix of the game by accordingly transferring payoffs between players. We introduce and analyze solution concepts for 2-player normal form games with such preplay offers under various assumptions for the preplay negotiation phase and obtain results for existence of efficient negotiation strategies of the players. Then we extend the framework to coalitional preplay offers in N-player games, as well as to extensive form games with inter-play offers for side payments.

Interval temporal logics formalize reasoning about interval structures over (usually) linearly ordered domains, where time intervals are the primitive ontological entities and truth of formulae is defined relative to time intervals, rather than time points. In this paper, we introduce and study Metric Propositional Neighborhood Logic (MPNL) over natural numbers. MPNL features two modalities referring, respectively, to an interval that is “met by” the current one and to an interval that “meets” the current one, plus an infinite set of length constraints, regarded as atomic propositions, to constrain the lengths of intervals. We argue that MPNL can be successfully used in different areas of artificial intelligence to combine qualitative and quantitative interval temporal reasoning, thus providing a viable alternative to well-established logical frameworks such as Duration Calculus. Propositional Neighborhood Logic (PNL) is an interval temporal logic featuring two modalities corresponding to the relations of right and left neighborhood between two intervals on a linear order (in terms of Allen's relations, meets/ and met by). Recently, it has been shown that PNL interpreted over several classes of linear orders, including natural numbers, is decidable (NEXPTIME-complete) and that some of its natural extensions preserve decidability. Most notably, this is the case with PNL over natural numbers extended with a limited form of metric constraints and with the future fragment of PNL extended with modal operators corresponding to Allen's relations begins, begun by, and before/. This paper aims at demonstrating that PNL and its metric version MPNL, interpreted over natural numbers, are indeed very close to the border with undecidability, and even relatively weak extensions of them become undecidable. In particular, we show that (i) the addition of binders on integer variables ranging over interval lengths makes the resulting hybrid extension of MPNL undecidable, and (ii) a very weak first-order extension of the future fragment of PNL, obtained by replacing proposition letters by a restricted subclass of first-order formulae where only one variable is allowed, is undecidable (in contrast with the decidability of similar first-order extensions of point-based temporal logics).

We raise questions about voting rules, and provide some of the answers. The method is to define a number of new formal properties of voting rules, and use these for classification and analysis. The aim is to get a better perspective on vices and virtues of individual voting rules.

We give a simple definition of validity for syllogisms involving necessary and assertoric premises which validates all and only the Aristotelian apodeictic syllogisms.

Logics for time intervals provide a natural framework for dealing with time in various areas of computer science and artificial intelligence, such as planning, natural language processing, temporal databases, and formal specification. In this paper we focus our attention on propositional interval temporal logics with temporal modalities for neighboring intervals over linear orders. We study the class of propositional neigh-borhood logics (PNL) over two natural semantics, respectively admitting and excluding point-intervals. First, we introduce interval neighborhood frames and we provide representation theorems for them, then, we develop complete axiomatic systems and semantic tableaux for logics in PNL.

We develop a tableau-based decision procedure for the full coalitional multiagent temporal-epistemic logic of linear time CMATEL(CD+LT). It extends LTL with operators of common and distributed knowledge for all coalitions of agents. Proof complexity is an interdisciplinary area of research utilising techniques from logic, complexity, and combinatorics towards the main aim of understanding the complexity of theorem proving procedures. Traditionally, propositional proofs have been the main object of investigation in proof complexity. Due their richer expressivity and numerous applications within computer science, also non-classical logics have been intensively studied from a proof complexity perspective in the last decade, and a number of impressive results have been obtained. In these notes we give an introduction to this recent field of proof complexity of non-classical logics. We cover results from proof complexity of modal, intuitionistic, and non-monotonic logics. Some of the results are surveyed, but in addition we provide full details of a recent exponential lower bound for modal logics due to Hrubes [60] and explain the complexity of several sequent calculi for default logic [16,13]. To make the text self-contained, we also include necessary background information on classical proof systems and non-classical logics.

The validity/satisfiability problem for most propositional interval temporal logics is (highly) undecidable, under very weak assumptions on the class of interval structures in which they are interpreted. That, in particular, holds for most fragments of Halpern and Shoham's interval modal logic HS. Still, decidability is the rule for the fragments of HS with only one modal operator, based on an Allen's relation. In this paper, we show that the logic O of the Overlap relation, when interpreted over discrete linear orderings, is an exception. The proof is based on a reduction from the undecidable octant tiling problem. This is one of the sharpest undecidability result for fragments of HS.

Interval temporal logics are based on interval structures over linearly (or partially) ordered domains, where time intervals, rather than time instants, are the primitive ontological entities. In this paper we introduce and study Right Propositional Neighborhood Logic over natural numbers with integer constraints for interval lengths, which is a propositional interval temporal logic featuring a modality for the `right neighborhood' relation between intervals and explicit integer constraints for interval lengths. We prove that it has the bounded model property with respect to ultimately periodic models and is therefore decidable. In addition, we provide an EXPSPACE procedure for satisfiability checking and we prove EXPSPACE-hardness by a reduction from the exponential corridor tiling problem.

Two-way alternating automata were introduced by Vardi in order to study the satisfiability problem for the modal μ-calculus extended with backwards modalities. In this paper, we present a very simple proof by way of Wadge games of the strictness of the hierarchy of Motowski indices of two-way alternating automata over trees.
