4. Developing skills to explain scientific concepts during initial teacher education : the role of peer assessment

Abstract

Initial teacher education is an area of weakness within the Chilean education system. Yet it is highlighted as a crucial aspect of educational success. Success in educational improvement depends mainly on the teachers (because they enact a reform by putting it into practice), and teacher thinking is likely to influence teacher decision-making. How teacher conceptions and practice change, and how to facilitate this change, was the focus of this study. It explored to what extent peer assessment could facilitate change in pre-service science teachers’ conceptions and practices regarding conceptual explanations in science teaching.In a quasi-experimental design, a ten-session peer assessment intervention was carried out with thirty seven pre-service science teachers in three Chilean universities, each with an experimental and control group. The intervention sought to develop changes in teachers’ conceptions about the quality of explanations and in their skill of explaining scientific concepts. Teachers' thoughts were obtained through a peer assessment questionnaire, feedback sessions, focus groups and interviews. The quality of their explanations was measured at pre, post and follow-up in their eventual first job via video-recorded microteaching episodes using observational analysis. Inter-rater reliability was calculated on 5% of all qualitative data and all the videos were rated by two researchers in a blind process. Qualitative analysis indicated how teachers transformed their conceptions about the quality of explanations from general pedagogical knowledge into pedagogical content knowledge. A quantitative instrument was created to evaluate student teachers’ explanations in practice. Its reliability enables the assessment the skill of explaining based on ten elements (Cronbach’s alpha=.77). Results showed pre-service teachers significantly improved their explanations of scientific concepts in some practical aspects, although not all of them were transferred into real teaching contexts. The changes in student teachers’ conceptions and practice were analysed to indicate how the process occurred, to what extent peer assessment had a role on it, and which elements facilitated or made difficult the transference of the skill of explaining into real teaching. These results indicated that peer assessment can play a noteworthy role in teacher education to develop skills. There are implications for policy and practice in this study, not only for teacher education but also for in-service teacher professional development, not only for Chile but also for other countries.

Abstract

A techno-economic study of different pretreatments of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) has been carried out: diluted sulfuric acid (DSA) pretreatment, fractionation of LCB with an ethanol-water mixture (EW), and the same process with liquor reuse (EWR). A simplified analysis was performed considering selected equipment, utilities, and supplies consumption, while also considering the influence of the liquid to solid (L/S) ratio. The equipment cost was found to be similar for the three alternatives, although selected operating costs were somewhat lower for the DSA pretreatment than for the EW. When liquor reuse was considered, EWR costs were significantly reduced. For the case study of L/S of 10, costs were halved under the tested conditions. The influence of the L/S ratio was found to be approximately linear, and correlations were obtained to estimate steam and utilities consumption for different L/S ratios.

Abstract

La verticilosis o “pardeo” es considerada una de las enfermedades más importantes que afectan al cultivo de olivo a nivel mundial. En Argentina está presente en la zona de cultivo en las provincias de Córdoba, La Rioja, Catamarca y Mendoza (Docampo et al., 1981; Oriolani et al., 2008; Pérez et al., 2010). La enfermedad produce pérdidas económicas de importancia, por la necrosis de ramas y consecuente disminución de la producción de frutos y en algunos casos ocasiona la muerte de la planta. Según relevamientos realizados en el departamento Arauco (provincia de La Rioja) su incidencia se incrementó notablemente en los últimos años (Ladux et al, 2014). En las plantaciones tradicionales la patología se presenta en forma crónica, mientras que en las plantaciones intensivas, puede llegar a causar la muerte de las plantas jóvenes. Abstract

En este trabajo estudiaremos los sistemas de numeración de diferentes civilizaciones del mundo antiguo y conoceremos cómo, a través de ellos, resolvían algunos de los problemas que se les presentaban a diario. Comenzaremos nuestro recorrido en la prehistoria, veremos cómo surgen naturalmente los primeros sistemas numéricos y como los problemas cotidianos, a los que se enfrentaban los hombres de aquella época, los vuelven cada vez más complejos. Luego, analizaremos tres civilizaciones que desarrollaron sistemas numéricos totalmente diferentes: los egipcios con sus jeroglíficos, los babilónicos con su sistema sexagesimal y los mayas con su sistema vigesimal. Trataremos de entender su manera de representar los números y como operaban aritméticamente con ellos. El objetivo principal es invitarlos por unos momentos a viajar en el tiempo y razonar como lo hacían los sabios de estas diferentes culturas para resolver problemas de su época, equipados tan sólo con las herramientas con las que ellos contaban. Abstract

Objective: Report the prevalence and severity of the most common allergic diseases in children living in Monterrey, México., Methods: Cross-sectional multi-center survey on the most common allergic diseases, completed by parents of 6-7-year-old children and by 13-14- year-old adolescents in the Monterrey metropolitan area, between January 2018 and December 2019., Results: A total of 3,044 questionnaires were eligible for the analysis. Among children between 6-7 years old, 30.2% (n = 143/473) presented wheezing at any time in their life; with a higher prevalence in the male population. In the adolescent group, 26.4% reported having experienced wheezing at some point in their life, with a slight predominance in the female group (54.9%)., Conclusions: Knowing the prevalence of allergic diseases in our population gives us tools to generate strategies that allow us to provide the best quality healthcare to our patients., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
