Abstract

The $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) cross-sections have been measured at the Experimental Area 2 (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN with three C$_6$D$_6$ detectors. This measurement is part of a collective effort to improve the capture cross-section data for Minor Actinides (MAs), which are required to estimate the production and transmutation rates of these isotopes in light water reactors and innovative reactor systems. In particular, the neutron capture in $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm open the path for the formation of other Cm isotopes and heavier elements such as Bk and Cf and the knowledge of (n,$\gamma$) cross-sections of these Cm isotopes plays an important role in the transport, transmutation and storage of the spent nuclear fuel. The reactions $^{246}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) and $^{248}$Cm(n,$\gamma$) have been the two first capture measurements analyzed at n_TOF EAR2. Until this experiment and two recent measurements performed at J-PARC, there was only one set of data of the capture cross-sections of $^{246}$Cm and $^{248}$Cm, that was obtained in 1969 in an underground nuclear explosion experiment. In the measurement at n_TOF a total of 13 resonances of $^{246}$Cm between 4 and 400 eV and 5 of $^{248}$Cm between 7 and 100 eV have been identified and fitted. The radiative kernels obtained for $^{246}$Cm are compatible with JENDL-5, but some of them are not with JENDL-4, which has been adopted by JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII.0. The radiative kernels obtained for the first three $^{248}$Cm resonances are compatible with JENDL-5, however, the other two are not compatible with any other evaluation and are 20% and 60% larger than JENDL-5.

Abstract

Background: The $^{14}$N(n,p)$^{14}$C reaction is of interest in neutron capture therapy, where nitrogen-related dose is the main component due to low-energy neutrons, and in astrophysics, where 14N acts as a neutron poison in the s-process. Several discrepancies remain between the existing data obtained in partial energy ranges: thermal energy, keV region and resonance region. Purpose: Measuring the 14N(n,p)14C cross section from thermal to the resonance region in a single measurement for the first time, including characterization of the first resonances, and providing calculations of Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS). Method: Time-of-flight technique. Experimental Area 2 (EAR-2) of the neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. $^{10}$B(n,${\alpha}$)$^7$Li and $^{235}$U(n,f) reactions as references. Two detection systems running simultaneously, one on-beam and another off-beam. Description of the resonances with the R-matrix code sammy. Results: The cross section has been measured from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV resolving the two first resonances (at 492.7 and 644 keV). A thermal cross-section (1.809$\pm$0.045 b) lower than the two most recent measurements by slightly more than one standard deviation, but in line with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 evaluations has been obtained. A 1/v energy dependence of the cross section has been confirmed up to tens of keV neutron energy. The low energy tail of the first resonance at 492.7 keV is lower than suggested by evaluated values, while the overall resonance strength agrees with evaluations. Conclusions: Our measurement has allowed to determine the $^{14}$N(n,p) cross-section over a wide energy range for the first time. We have obtained cross-sections with high accuracy (2.5 %) from sub-thermal energy to 800 keV and used these data to calculate the MACS for kT = 5 to kT = 100 keV., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

Abstract

The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range (25 meV - 170 keV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN, relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha) standard reactions, with high resolution and accuracy, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. In this paper we report on the results in the region between thermal and 10 keV neutron energy. A resonance analysis has been performed up to 200 eV, with the code SAMMY. The resulting fission kernels are compared with the ones extracted on the basis of the resonance parameters of the most recent major evaluated data libraries. A comparison of the n_TOF data with the evaluated cross sections is also performed from thermal to 10 keV neutron energy for the energy-averaged cross section in energy groups of suitably chosen width. A good agreement is found in average between the new results and the latest evaluated data files ENDF-B/VIII and JEFF-3.3, as well as with respect to the IAEA reference files. However, some discrepancies are still present in some specific energy regions. The new dataset here presented, characterized by unprecedented resolution and accuracy, can help improving the evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region and up to 10 keV, and reduce the uncertainties that affect this region.

Abstract

i-TED is an innovative detection system which exploits Compton imaging techniques to achieve a superior signal-to-background ratio in ($n,\gamma$) cross-section measurements using time-of-flight technique. This work presents the first experimental validation of the i-TED apparatus for high-resolution time-of-flight experiments and demonstrates for the first time the concept proposed for background rejection. To this aim both $^{197}$Au($n,\gamma$) and $^{56}$Fe($n, \gamma$) reactions were measured at CERN n\_TOF using an i-TED demonstrator based on only three position-sensitive detectors. Two \cds detectors were also used to benchmark the performance of i-TED. The i-TED prototype built for this study shows a factor of $\sim$3 higher detection sensitivity than state-of-the-art \cds detectors in the $\sim$10~keV neutron energy range of astrophysical interest. This paper explores also the perspectives of further enhancement in performance attainable with the final i-TED array consisting of twenty position-sensitive detectors and new analysis methodologies based on Machine-Learning techniques., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The idea of slow-neutron capture nucleosynthesis formulated in 1957 triggered a tremendous experimental effort in different laboratories worldwide to measure the relevant nuclear physics input quantities, namely ($n,\gamma$) cross sections over the stellar temperature range (from few eV up to several hundred keV) for most of the isotopes involved from Fe up to Bi. A brief historical review focused on total energy detectors will be presented to illustrate how, advances in instrumentation have led, over the years, to the assessment and discovery of many new aspects of $s$-process nucleosynthesis and to the progressive refinement of theoretical models of stellar evolution. A summary will be presented on current efforts to develop new detection concepts, such as the Total-Energy Detector with $\gamma$-ray imaging capability (i-TED). The latter is based on the simultaneous combination of Compton imaging with neutron time-of-flight (TOF) techniques, in order to achieve a superior level of sensitivity and selectivity in the measurement of stellar neutron capture rates., Comment: Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics IX - Conference Proceedings

Abstract

The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range at n_TOF relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha), with high resolution and in a wide energy range, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. This allowed us to make a direct comparison of the reaction yields under the same experimental conditions, and taking into account the forward/backward emission asymmetry. A hint of an anomaly in the 10{\div}30 keV neutron energy range had been previously observed in other experiments, indicating a cross section systematically lower by several percent relative to major evaluations. The present results indicate that the evaluated cross section in the 9{\div}18 keV neutron energy range is indeed overestimated, both in the recent updates of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and of the IAEA reference data. Furthermore, these new high-resolution data confirm the existence of resonance-like structures in the keV neutron energy region. The new, high accuracy results here reported may lead to a reduction of the uncertainty in the 1{\div}100 keV neutron energy region. Abstract

We report on the measurement of the $^{7}$Be($n, p$)$^{7}$Li cross section from thermal to approximately 325 keV neutron energy, performed in the high-flux experimental area (EAR2) of the n\_TOF facility at CERN. This reaction plays a key role in the lithium yield of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) for standard cosmology. The only two previous time-of-flight measurements performed on this reaction did not cover the energy window of interest for BBN, and showed a large discrepancy between each other. The measurement was performed with a Si-telescope, and a high-purity sample produced by implantation of a $^{7}$Be ion beam at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. While a significantly higher cross section is found at low-energy, relative to current evaluations, in the region of BBN interest the present results are consistent with the values inferred from the time-reversal $^{7}$Li($p, n$)$^{7}$Be reaction, thus yielding only a relatively minor improvement on the so-called Cosmological Lithium Problem (CLiP). The relevance of these results on the near-threshold neutron production in the p+$^{7}$Li reaction is also discussed.

Abstract

Neutron capture measurements on $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd were performed using the time-of-flight technique at the n\_TOF facility at CERN. Four samples in form of self-sustaining metallic discs isotopically enriched in $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd were used. The measurements were carried out at the experimental area (EAR1) at 185 m from the neutron source, with an array of 4 C$_6$D$_6$ liquid scintillation detectors. The capture cross sections of $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd at neutron kinetic energy of 0.0253 eV have been estimated to be 62.2(2.2) kb and 239.8(9.3) kb, respectively, thus up to 6\% different relative to the ones reported in the nuclear data libraries. A resonance shape analysis has been performed in the resolved resonance region up to 180 eV and 300 eV, respectively, in average resonance parameters have been found in good agreement with evaluations. Above these energies the observed resonance-like structures in the cross section have been tentatively characterised in terms of resonance energy and area up to 1 keV.

Abstract

Following the completion of the second neutron beam line and the related experimental area (EAR2) at the n_TOF spallation neutron source at CERN, several experiments were planned and performed. The high instantaneous neutron flux available in EAR2 allows to investigate neutron indiced reactions with charged particles in the exit channel even employing targets made out of small amounts of short-lived radioactive isotopes. After the successful measurement of the 7Be(n,{\alpha}){\alpha} cross section, the 7Be(n,p)7Li reaction was studied in order to provide still missing cross section data of relevance for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), in an attempt to find a solution to the cosmological Lithium abundance problem. This paper describes the experimental setup employed in such a measurement and its characterization.

Abstract

ASTEP (Antarctica Search for Transiting ExoPlanets) is a pilot project that aims at searching and characterizing transiting exoplanets from Dome C in Antarctica and to qualify this site for photometry in the visible. Two instruments were installed at Dome C and ran for six winters in total. The analysis of the collected data is nearly complete. We present the operation of the instruments, and the technical challenges, limitations, and possible solutions in light of the data quality. The instruments performed continuous observations during the winters. Human interventions are required mainly for regular inspection and ice dust removal. A defrosting system is efficient at preventing and removing ice on the mirrors. The PSF FWHM is 4.5 arcsec on average which is 2.5 times larger than the specification, and is highly variable; the causes are the poor ground-level seeing, the turbulent plumes generated by the heating system, and to a lower extent the imperfect optical alignment and focusing, and some astigmatism. We propose solutions for each of these aspects that would largely increase the PSF stability. The astrometric and guiding precisions are satisfactory and would deserve only minor improvements. Major issues are encountered with the camera shutter which did not close properly after two winters; we minimized this issue by heating the shutter and by developing specific image calibration algorithms. Finally, we summarize the site testing and science results obtained with ASTEP. Abstract

The aim of this work is to provide a precise and accurate measurement of the 238U(n,g) reaction cross section in the energy region from 1 eV to 700 keV. This reaction is of fundamental importance for the design calculations of nuclear reactors, governing the behaviour of the reactor core. In particular, fast reactors, which are experiencing a growing interest for their ability to burn radioactive waste, operate in the high energy region of the neutron spectrum. In this energy region most recent evaluations disagree due to inconsistencies in the existing measurements of up to 15%. In addition, the assessment of nuclear data uncertainty performed for innovative reactor systems shows that the uncertainty in the radiative capture cross-section of 238U should be further reduced to 1-3% in the energy region from 20 eV to 25 keV. To this purpose, addressed by the Nuclear Energy Agency as a priority nuclear data need, complementary experiments, one at the GELINA and two at the n_TOF facility, were proposed and carried out within the 7th Framework Project ANDES of the European Commission. The results of one of these 238U(n,g) measurements performed at the n_TOF CERN facility are presented in this work. The gamma-ray cascade following the radiative neutron capture has been detected exploiting a setup of two C6D6 liquid scintillators. Resonance parameters obtained from this work are on average in excellent agreement with the ones reported in evaluated libraries. In the unresolved resonance region, this work yields a cross section in agreement with evaluated libraries up to 80 keV, while for higher energies our results are significantly higher., Comment: 15 pages, 10 captioned figures

Abstract

The integral measurement of the $^{12}$C(n,p)$^{12}$B reaction was performed at the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN. The total number of $^{12}$B nuclei produced per neutron pulse of the n_TOF beam was determined using the activation technique in combination with a time of flight technique. The cross section is integrated over the n_TOF neutron energy spectrum from reaction threshold at 13.6 MeV to 10 GeV. Having been measured up to 1 GeV on basis of the $^{235}$U(n,f) reaction, the neutron energy spectrum above 200 MeV has been reevaluated due to the recent extension of the cross section reference for this particular reaction, which is otherwise considered a standard up to 200 MeV. The results from the dedicated GEANT4 simulations have been used to evaluate the neutron flux from 1 GeV up to 10 GeV. The experimental results related to the $^{12}$C(n,p)$^{12}$B reaction are compared with the evaluated cross sections from major libraries and with the predictions of different GEANT4 models, which mostly underestimate the $^{12}$B production. On the contrary, a good reproduction of the integral cross section derived from measurements is obtained with TALYS-1.6 calculations, with optimized parameters., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The newly built second experimental area EAR2 of the n_TOF spallation neutron source at CERN allows to perform (n, charged particles) experiments on short-lived highly radioactive targets. This paper describes a detection apparatus and the experimental procedure for the determination of the cross-section of the 7Be(n,{\alpha}) reaction, which represents one of the focal points toward the solution of the cosmological Lithium abundance problem, and whose only measurement, at thermal energy, dates back to 1963. The apparently unsurmountable experimental difficulties stemming from the huge 7Be {\gamma}-activity, along with the lack of a suitable neutron beam facility, had so far prevented further measurements. The detection system is subject to considerable radiation damage, but is capable of disentangling the rare reaction signals from the very high background. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the incidence and impact of risk factors for arterial and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with ITP and characterize the clinical features and management of patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study (January 1, 2011, to October 30, 2022) of adult patients diagnosed with ITP from an Australian tertiary hospital. The incidence rates of thrombosis were calculated in terms of person-years of follow-up. Multiadjusted Cox regression was used to estimate associations. RESULTS: A total of 220 patients with 1365 person-years of follow-up since ITP diagnosis revealed 26 (11.8%) patients with a total of 37 thrombosis events, 29 (78%) VTE and 8 (22%) arterial thromboembolism (ATE). The incidence rate of thrombosis was 2.71 (95% CI, 1.97-3.72) (0.66 [95% CI, 0.33-1.26] for arterial thromboembolism and 2.05 [95% CI, 1.42-2.95] for VTE) per 100 person-years. Mean age and median time to first thrombosis diagnosis was 56 and 2.13 years, respectively. Age, secondary ITP, lines of therapy, thrombosis risk factors, and thrombopoietin receptor agonist therapy were independently associated with thrombosis. Almost all patients (25 of 26, [96%]) had good ITP disease control prior to thrombosis diagnosis, and antithrombotic therapy was deliverable and well tolerated. CONCLUSION: Diagnosis of thrombosis in patients with ITP, while infrequent, is of clinical significance. We identified from a heterogeneous real-world cohort that older patients with multiply-treated secondary ITP receiving thrombopoietin receptor agonists are at the highest risk.

Abstract

Introduction: The role of the complement inhibitory proteins CD46 and CD59 in the immune response to an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is unknown. We investigated the relationships between the shedding of CD46 and CD59 into the circulation, reflected by plasma levels of soluble CD46 and CD59, and the risk for post-ACS complications., Methods: We measured plasma sCD46 and sCD59 in a cohort of 546 ACS patients within 24 h after hospital admission, and after 6-weeks in a subgroup of 114 patients. Study outcomes were incident heart failure (HF), major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and mortality during a median follow-up period of up to 3.3 years. Echocardiography at 1-year was performed in the follow-up subgroup., Results: Elevated sCD46 and sCD59 were correlated with increased levels of inflammatory mediators and metalloproteinases in plasma, and were associated with increased risk for MACE in Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for cardiovascular risk factors and revascularization [HR 95% CI 1.24 (1.02-1.52), p = 0.034 for sCD46 and 1.18 (1.00-1.38), p = 0.049 for sCD59]. Elevated sCD59 was also associated with higher incidence of HF [HR 95% CI 1.41 (1.15-1.74), p = 0.001], and with lower left ventricular ejection fraction at 1-year post-ACS (Spearman r = - 0.234, p = 0.020). We found no associations between plasma levels of the proteins at 6 weeks and outcomes., Conclusions: Shedding of the complement regulators CD46 and CD59 in plasma in the acute phase of ACS is associated with a negative prognosis. Abstract

Objectives: Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of gray mold, is a necrotrophic fungus that can infect a wide variety of plant species and plant tissues. During infection, this pathogen modulates the pH of its environment by secreting organic acids or ammonia. Deletion of the gene encoding the pH-responsive transcription factor PacC revealed the importance of this regulator in different steps of the infection process and particularly in the secretion of organics acids, reactive oxygen species and plant cell wall degrading enzymes. This study aimed to identify the genes controlled by this fungus-specific transcription factor when the fungus is placed under acidic or neutral conditions., Data Description: Botrytis cinerea B05.10 and the knock-out BcpacC mutant strains were grown on solid non-buffered medium for 3 days on the surface of cellophane membranes before transfer for 4 h onto the surface of liquid medium buffered at pH 5.0 or 7.0 followed by mycelium collection. After RNA sequencing, differentially expressed genes according to strains or pH conditions were listed. Abstract

Aims: Parameters derived from reservoir-excess pressure analysis have been demonstrated to predict cardiovascular events. Thus, altered reservoir-excess pressure parameters could have a detrimental effect on highly-perfused organs like the heart. We aimed to cross-sectionally determine whether reservoir-excess pressure parameters were associated with N-terminal pro-brain-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in older adults., Methods: We studied 868 older adults with diverse cardiovascular risk. Reservoir-excess pressure parameters were obtained through radial artery tonometry including reservoir pressure integral, peak reservoir pressure, excess pressure integral (INTXSP), systolic rate constant (SRC) and diastolic rate constant (DRC). Plasma levels of NT-proBNP, as a biomarker of cardiac overload, were analysed by the Proximity Extension Assay technology., Results: Multivariable linear regression analyses revealed that all reservoir-excess pressure parameters studied were associated with NT-proBNP after adjusting for age and sex. After further adjustments for conventional cardiovascular risk factors, INTXSP [β = 0.191 (95% confidence interval, CI: 0.099, 0.283), P < 0.001], SRC [β = -0.080 (95% CI: -0.141, -0.019), P = 0.010] and DRC [β = 0.138 (95% CI: 0.073, 0.202), P < 0.001] remained associated with NT-proBNP. Sensitivity analysis found that there were occasions where the association between SRC and NT-proBNP was attenuated, but both INTXSP and DRC remained consistently associated with NT-proBNP., Conclusions: The observed associations between reservoir-excess pressure parameters and NT-proBNP suggest that altered reservoir-excess pressure parameters may reflect an increased load inflicted on the left ventricular cardiomyocytes and could have a potential to be utilized in the clinical setting for cardiovascular risk stratification., (© 2024 The Author(s). Abstract

Background:The design of new nuclear reactors and transmutation devices requires to reduce the present neutron cross section uncertainties of minor actinides. Purpose: Reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty. Method: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN with a BaF$_{2}$ Total Absorption Calorimeter, in the energy range between 0.7 eV and 2.5 keV. Results: The $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section has been successfully measured in the mentioned energy range. The resolved resonance region has been extended from 250 eV up to 400 eV. In the unresolved resonance region our results are compatible with one of the two incompatible capture data sets available below 2.5 keV. The data available in EXFOR and in the literature has been used to perform a simple analysis above 2.5 keV. Conclusions: The results of this measurement contribute to reduce the $^{243}$Am(n,$\gamma$) cross section uncertainty and suggest that this cross section is underestimated up to 25% in the neutron energy range between 50 eV and a few keV in the present evaluated data libraries.

Abstract

The $^{238}$U to $^{235}$U fission cross section ratio has been determined at n_TOF up to $\sim$1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets have been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at n_TOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of the neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. A good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++/Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solving a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental dataset available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to $\sim$1 GeV.

Abstract

The integral cross section of the $^{12}$C($n,p$)$^{12}$B reaction has been determined for the first time in the neutron energy range from threshold to several GeV at the n_TOF facility at CERN. The measurement relies on the activation technique, with the $\beta$-decay of $^{12}$B measured over a period of four half-lives within the same neutron bunch in which the reaction occurs. The results indicate that model predictions, used in a variety of applications, are mostly inadequate. Abstract

The neutron sensitivity of the C$_6$D$_6$ detector setup used at n_TOF for capture measurements has been studied by means of detailed GEANT4 simulations. A realistic software replica of the entire n_TOF experimental hall, including the neutron beam line, sample, detector supports and the walls of the experimental area has been implemented in the simulations. The simulations have been analyzed in the same manner as experimental data, in particular by applying the Pulse Height Weighting Technique. The simulations have been validated against a measurement of the neutron background performed with a $^\mathrm{nat}$C sample, showing an excellent agreement above 1 keV. At lower energies, an additional component in the measured $^\mathrm{nat}$C yield has been discovered, which prevents the use of $^\mathrm{nat}$C data for neutron background estimates at neutron energies below a few hundred eV. The origin and time structure of the neutron background have been derived from the simulations. Examples of the neutron background for two different samples are demonstrating the important role of accurate simulations of the neutron background in capture cross section measurements.

Abstract

The cross section of the $^{62}$Ni($n,\gamma$) reaction was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF at CERN. Capture kernels of 42 resonances were analyzed up to 200~keV neutron energy and Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) from $kT=5-100$ keV were calculated. With a total uncertainty of 4.5%, the stellar cross section is in excellent agreement with the the KADoNiS compilation at $kT=30$ keV, while being systematically lower up to a factor of 1.6 at higher stellar temperatures. The cross section of the $^{63}$Ni($n,\gamma$) reaction was measured for the first time at n_TOF. We determined unresolved cross sections from 10 to 270 keV with a systematic uncertainty of 17%. These results provide fundamental constraints on $s$-process production of heavier species, especially the production of Cu in massive stars, which serve as the dominant source of Cu in the solar system.

The aim of this work is to assess its potential for detecting transiting extrasolar planets through a comparison and combination of photometric data from Antarctica with time series from a midlatitude site. During 2010, the two small aperture telescopes ASTEP 400 (Dome C) and BEST II (Chile) together performed an observing campaign of two target fields and the transiting planet WASP-18b. For the latter, a bright star, Dome C appears to yield an advantageous signal-to-noise ratio. For field surveys, both Dome C and Chile appear to be of comparable photometric quality. However, within two weeks, observations at Dome C yield a transit detection efficiency that typically requires a whole observing season in Chile. For the first time, data from Antarctica and Chile have been combined to extent the observational duty cycle. This approach is both feasible in practice and favorable for transit search, as it increases the detection yield by 12-18%., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in PASP (in press)

Abstract

The $^{58}$Ni $(n,\gamma)$ cross section has been measured at the neutron time of flight facility n_TOF at CERN, in the energy range from 27 meV up to 400 keV. In total, 51 resonances have been analyzed up to 122 keV. Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) have been calculated for stellar temperatures of kT$=$5-100 keV with uncertainties of less than 6%, showing fair agreement with recent experimental and evaluated data up to kT = 50 keV. The MACS extracted in the present work at 30 keV is 34.2$\pm$0.6$_\mathrm{stat}\pm$1.8$_\mathrm{sys}$ mb, in agreement with latest results and evaluations, but 12% lower relative to the recent KADoNIS compilation of astrophysical cross sections. When included in models of the s-process nucleosynthesis in massive stars, this change results in a 60% increase of the abundance of $^{58}$Ni, with a negligible propagation on heavier isotopes. The reason is that, using both the old or the new MACS, 58Ni is efficiently depleted by neutron captures., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

The $^{63}$Ni($n, \gamma$) cross section has been measured for the first time at the neutron time-of-flight facility n\_TOF at CERN from thermal neutron energies up to 200 keV. In total, capture kernels of 12 (new) resonances were determined. Maxwellian Averaged Cross Sections were calculated for thermal energies from kT = 5 keV to 100 keV with uncertainties around 20%. Stellar model calculations for a 25 M$_\odot$ star show that the new data have a significant effect on the $s$-process production of $^{63}$Cu, $^{64}$Ni, and $^{64}$Zn in massive stars, allowing stronger constraints on the Cu yields from explosive nucleosynthesis in the subsequent supernova.

Abstract

The ASTEP (Antarctica Search for Transiting ExoPlanets) program was originally aimed at probing the quality of the Dome C, Antarctica for the discovery and characterization of exoplanets by photometry. In the first year of operation of the 40 cm ASTEP 400 telescope (austral winter 2010), we targeted the known transiting planet WASP-19b in order to try to detect its secondary transits in the visible. This is made possible by the excellent sub-millimagnitude precision of the binned data. The WASP-19 system was observed during 24 nights in May 2010. The photometric variability level due to starspots is about 1.8% (peak-to-peak), in line with the SuperWASP data from 2007 (1.4%) and larger than in 2008 (0.07%). We find a rotation period of WASP-19 of 10.7 +/- 0.5 days, in agreement with the SuperWASP determination of 10.5 +/- 0.2 days. Theoretical models show that this can only be explained if tidal dissipation in the star is weak, i.e. the tidal dissipation factor Q'star > 3.10^7. Separately, we find evidence for a secondary eclipse of depth 390 +/- 190 ppm with a 2.0 sigma significance, a phase consistent with a circular orbit and a 3% false positive probability. Given the wavelength range of the observations (420 to 950 nm), the secondary transit depth translates into a day side brightness temperature of 2690(-220/+150) K, in line with measurements in the z' and K bands. The day side emission observed in the visible could be due either to thermal emission of an extremely hot day side with very little redistribution of heat to the night side, or to direct reflection of stellar light with a maximum geometrical albedo Ag=0.27 +/- 0.13. We also report a low-frequency oscillation well in phase at the planet orbital period, but with a lower-limit amplitude that could not be attributed to the planet phase alone, and possibly contaminated with residual lightcurve trends., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 13 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The ASTEP project aims at detecting and characterizing transiting planets from Dome C, Antarctica, and qualifying this site for photometry in the visible. The first phase of the project, ASTEP South, is a fixed 10 cm diameter instrument pointing continuously towards the celestial South pole. Observations were made almost continuously during 4 winters, from 2008 to 2011. The point-to-point RMS of 1-day photometric lightcurves can be explained by a combination of expected statistical noises, dominated by the photon noise up to magnitude 14. This RMS is large, from 2.5 mmag at R=8 to 6% at R=14, because of the small size of ASTEP South and the short exposure time (30 s). Statistical noises should be considerably reduced using the large amount of collected data. A 9.9-day period eclipsing binary is detected, with a magnitude R=9.85. The 2-season lightcurve folded in phase and binned into 1000 points has a RMS of 1.09 mmag, for an expected photon noise of 0.29 mmag. The use of the 4 seasons of data with a better detrending algorithm should yield a sub-millimagnitude precision for this folded lightcurve. Radial velocity follow-up observations are conducted and reveal a F-M binary system. The detection of this 9.9-day period system with a small instrument such as ASTEP South and the precision of the folded lightcurve show the quality of Dome C for continuous photometric observations, and its potential for the detection of planets with orbital period longer than those usually detected from the ground., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, IAUS 288 conference proceedings

32. Elevated carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) is associated with incident heart failure and mortality in acute coronary syndrome.

Abstract

Aims: Carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), a mucin produced by serosal cells in response to mechanical and inflammatory stimuli, has emerged as an important biomarker to guide risk stratification in heart failure (HF). The prognostic value of CA125 in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients is less explored., Methods: In a cohort of 524 ACS patients (73% males, mean age 67 ± 12 years), we assessed the associations between CA125 and the risk for HF and death during a median follow-up period of 27.3 months for incident HF and 39.5 months for mortality. Plasma CA125 was measured within 24 h after admission in the entire cohort and after 6 weeks in a subgroup of 115 elderly patients (>75 years of age). We also assessed the relationships between baseline CA125 and echocardiographic parameters of cardiac structure and function at 1 year post-ACS in this subgroup., Results: Baseline CA125 was associated with incident HF in the entire cohort in a Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for age, sex, cardiovascular (CV) risk factors (diabetes, smoking, hypertension, previous HF, previous ACS and previous stroke), renal function and revascularization {hazard ratio [HR] 1.46 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.10-1.93] per 1-standard deviation [SD] CA125 increase; P = 0.009}. In the detailed follow-up subgroup, elevated baseline CA125 predicted subsequent deterioration of left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF), defined as a >5% absolute LVEF decrease in patients with LVEF ≥ 50% at discharge [odds ratio (OR) 3.31 (95% CI 1.15-9.54) per 1-SD baseline CA125 increase; P = 0.027]. We also found significant correlations between high baseline CA125 and larger LV volumes (LV end-diastolic volume index, Spearman's r = 0.329, P < 0.001; LV end-systolic volume index, r = 0.391, P < 0.001) and left atrial volume index (r = 0.320, P < 0.001) at 1 year post-ACS, indicative of adverse cardiac remodelling. Elevated baseline and follow-up CA125 were associated with increased mortality, independently of age and sex [HR 1.37 (95% CI 1.09-1.71), P = 0.006, per 1-SD baseline CA125; HR 1.98 (95% CI 1.06-3.67), P = 0.031, per increasing 6 week CA125 tertile]. The relationship between 6 week CA125 and incident mortality remained significant in the fully adjusted model [HR 2.23 (95% CI 1.15-4.35) per increasing CA125 tertile; P = 0.018]., Conclusions: We report independent associations between elevated CA125, LV dysfunction, cardiac remodelling, incident HF and mortality post-ACS. Our results warrant further evaluation of CA125 as a potential biomarker for risk stratification and management of ACS patients, both at the time of the acute coronary event and during follow-up., (© 2024 The Author(s). Abstract

Background: Coronary atherosclerosis detected by imaging is a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk. However, imaging involves large resources and exposure to radiation. The aim was, therefore, to test whether nonimaging data, specifically data that can be self-reported, could be used to identify individuals with moderate to severe coronary atherosclerosis., Methods and Results: We used data from the population-based SCAPIS (Swedish CardioPulmonary BioImage Study) in individuals with coronary computed tomography angiography (n=25 182) and coronary artery calcification score (n=28 701), aged 50 to 64 years without previous ischemic heart disease. We developed a risk prediction tool using variables that could be assessed from home (self-report tool). For comparison, we also developed a tool using variables from laboratory tests, physical examinations, and self-report (clinical tool) and evaluated both models using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, external validation, and benchmarked against factors in the pooled cohort equation. The self-report tool (n=14 variables) and the clinical tool (n=23 variables) showed high-to-excellent discriminative ability to identify a segment involvement score ≥4 (area under the curve 0.79 and 0.80, respectively) and significantly better than the pooled cohort equation (area under the curve 0.76, P <0.001). The tools showed a larger net benefit in clinical decision-making at relevant threshold probabilities. The self-report tool identified 65% of all individuals with a segment involvement score ≥4 in the top 30% of the highest-risk individuals. Tools developed for coronary artery calcification score ≥100 performed similarly., Conclusions: We have developed a self-report tool that effectively identifies individuals with moderate to severe coronary atherosclerosis. The self-report tool may serve as prescreening tool toward a cost-effective computed tomography-based screening program for high-risk individuals.

Abstract

There is a lack of studies aiming to assess cellular a disintegrin and metalloproteinase-17 (ADAM-17) activity in COVID-19 patients and the eventual associations with the shedding of membrane-bound angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (mACE2). In addition, studies that investigate the relationship between ACE2 and ADAM-17 gene expressions in organs infected by SARS-CoV-2 are lacking. We used data from the Massachusetts general hospital COVID-19 study (306 COVID-19 patients and 78 symptomatic controls) to investigate the association between plasma levels of 33 different ADAM-17 substrates and COVID-19 severity and mortality. As a surrogate of cellular ADAM-17 activity, an ADAM-17 substrate score was calculated. The associations between soluble ACE2 (sACE2) and the ADAM-17 substrate score, renin, key inflammatory markers, and lung injury markers were investigated. Furthermore, we used data from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database to evaluate ADAM-17 and ACE2 gene expressions by age and sex in ages between 20-80 years. We found that increased ADAM-17 activity, as estimated by the ADAM-17 substrates score, was associated with COVID-19 severity ( p = 0.001). ADAM-17 activity was also associated with increased mortality but did not reach statistical significance ( p = 0.06). Soluble ACE2 showed the strongest positive correlation with the ADAM-17 substrate score, follow by renin, interleukin-6, and lung injury biomarkers. The ratio of ADAM-17 to ACE2 gene expression was highest in the lung. This study indicates that increased ADAM-17 activity is associated with severe COVID-19. Our findings also indicate that there may a bidirectional relationship between membrane-bound ACE2 shedding via increased ADAM-17 activity, dysregulated renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and immune signaling. Additionally, differences in ACE2 and ADAM-17 gene expressions between different tissues may be of importance in explaining why the lung is the organ most severely affected by COVID-19, but this requires further evaluation in prospective studies.

Abstract

The receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) has pro-inflammatory and pro-atherogenic effects. Low plasma levels of soluble RAGE (sRAGE), a decoy receptor for RAGE ligands, have been associated with increased risk for major adverse coronary events (MACE) in the general population. We performed a genome-wide association study to identify genetic determinants of plasma sRAGE in 4338 individuals from the cardiovascular arm of the Malmö Diet and Cancer study (MDC-CV). Further, we explored the associations between these genetic variants, incident first-time MACE and mortality in 24,640 unrelated individuals of European ancestry from the MDC cohort. The minor alleles of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): rs2070600, rs204993, rs116653040, and rs7306778 were independently associated with lower plasma sRAGE. The minor T (vs. C) allele of rs2070600 was associated with increased risk for MACE [HR 1.13 95% CI (1.02-1.25), P = 0.016]. Neither SNP was associated with mortality. This is the largest study to demonstrate a link between a genetic sRAGE determinant and CV risk. Only rs2070600, which enhances RAGE function by inducing a Gly82Ser polymorphism in the ligand-binding domain, was associated with MACE. The lack of associations with incident MACE for the other sRAGE-lowering SNPs suggests that this functional RAGE modification is central for the observed relationship., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Abstract

The dynamic relationship between heart failure and cancer poses a dual challenge. While cardiac remodeling can promote cancer growth and metastasis, tumor development can ameliorate cardiac dysfunction and suppress fibrosis. However, the precise mechanism through which cancer influences the heart and fibrosis is yet to be uncovered. To further explore the interaction between heart failure and cancer, we used the MDX mouse model, which suffers from cardiac fibrosis and cardiac dysfunction. A previous study from our lab demonstrated that tumor growth improves cardiac dysfunction and dampens fibrosis in the heart and diaphragm muscles of MDX mice. We used breast Polyoma middle T (PyMT) and Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cancer cell lines that developed into large tumors. To explore whether the aggressiveness of the cancer cell line is crucial for the beneficial phenotype, we employed a PyMT breast cancer cell line lacking integrin β1, representing a less aggressive cell line compared to the original PyMT cells. In addition, we examined immortalized and primary MEF cells. The injection of integrin β1 KO PyMT cancer cells and Mouse Embryo Fibroblasts cells (MEF) resulted in the improvement of cardiac function and decreased fibrosis in the heart, diaphragm, and skeletal muscles of MDX mice. Collectively, our data demonstrate that the cancer line aggressiveness as well as primary MEF cells are sufficient to impose the beneficial phenotype. These discoveries present potential novel clinical therapeutic approaches with beneficial outcome for patients with fibrotic diseases and cardiac dysfunction that do not require tumor growth.

Abstract

The advent of single-cell biology opens a new chapter for understanding human biological processes and for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating disease. This revolution now reaches the field of cardiovascular disease (CVD). New technologies to interrogate CVD samples at single-cell resolution are allowing the identification of novel cell communities that are important in shaping disease development and direct towards new therapeutic strategies. These approaches have begun to revolutionize atherosclerosis pathology and redraw our understanding of disease development. This review discusses the state-of-the-art of single-cell analysis of atherosclerotic plaques, with a particular focus on human lesions, and presents the current resolution of cellular subpopulations and their heterogeneity and plasticity in relation to clinically relevant features. Opportunities and pitfalls of current technologies as well as the clinical impact of single-cell technologies in CVD patient care are highlighted, advocating for multidisciplinary and international collaborative efforts to join the cellular dots of CVD.

Abstract

BackgroundCarotid artery disease is highly prevalent and a main cause of ischemic stroke and vascular dementia. There is a paucity of information on predictors of serious vascular events. Besides percentage diameter stenosis, international guidelines also recommend the evaluation of qualitative characteristics of carotid artery disease as a guide to treatment, but with no agreement on which qualitative features to assess. This inadequate knowledge leads to a poor ability to identify patients at risk, dispersion of medical resources, and unproven use of expensive and resource-consuming techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and computed tomography.ObjectivesThe Carotid Artery Multimodality imaging Prognostic (CAMP) study will: prospectively determine the best predictors of silent and overt ischemic stroke and vascular dementia in patients with asymptomatic subcritical carotid artery disease by identifying the noninvasive diagnostic features of the 'vulnerable carotid plaque'; assess whether 'smart' use of low-cost diagnostic methods such as ultrasound-based evaluations may yield at least the same level of prospective information as more expensive techniques.Study designWe will compare the prognostic/predictive value of all proposed techniques with regard to silent or clinically manifest ischemic stroke and vascular dementia. The study will include ≥300 patients with asymptomatic, unilateral, intermediate degree (40-60% diameter) common or internal carotid artery stenosis detected at carotid ultrasound, with a 2-year follow-up. Abstract

The neutron-induced fission cross sections of Th-232 and U-233 were measured relative to U-235 in a wide neutron energy range up to 1 GeV (and from fission threshold in the case of Th-232, and from 0.7 eV in case of U-233), using the white-spectrum neutron source at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight (n_TOF) facility. Parallel plate avalanche counters (PPACs) were used, installed at the Experimental Area 1 (EAR1), which is located at 185 m from the neutron spallation target. The anisotropic emission of fission fragments were taken into account in the detection efficiency by using, in the case of U-233, previous results available in EXFOR, whereas in the case of Th-232 these data were obtained from our measurement, using PPACs and targets tilted 45 degrees with respect to the neutron beam direction. Finally, the obtained results are compared with past measurements and major evaluated nuclear data libraries. Calculations using the high-energy reaction models INCL++ and ABLA07 were performed and some of their parameters were modified to reproduce the experimental results. At high energies, where no other neutron data exist, our results are compared with experimental data on proton-induced fission. Moreover, the dependence of the fission cross section at 1 GeV with the fissility parameter of the target nucleus is studied by combining those ( p, f) data with our (n, f) data on Th-232 and U-233 and on other isotopes studied earlier at n_TOF using the same experimental setup.

Abstract

Background: The present study was conducted to explore the association between protein intake across the main meals and hypertension (HTN)-related parameters in community-dwelling Brazilian older adults. Methods: Brazilian community-dwelling older adults were recruited in a senior center. Dietary habits were assessed through 24 h recall. Protein intake was classified as high and low according to median and recommended dietary allowance values. Absolute and body weight (BW)–adjusted protein consumption levels were quantified and analyzed according to ingestion across the main meals. Systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured using an oscilometric monitor. Participants were categorized as hypertensive according to physician diagnosis or the detection of high SBP and/or DBP values. Results: One hundred ninety-seven older adults were enrolled in the present study. Protein intake at lunch was independently and negatively associated with SBP. Furthermore, a lower prevalence of HTN (diagnosed by a physician) was observed in participants with higher intakes of protein. These results remained significant after adjustment for many covariates. However, significance was lost when kilocalories and micronutrients were included in the model. Conclusions: Findings of the present study indicate that protein intake at lunch was independently and negatively associated with systolic BP in community-dwelling older adults.

47. Thrombosis in patients with immune thrombocytopenia: incidence, risk, and clinical outcomes.

Abstract

Background: There is evidence that patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) are at increased risk of thrombosis. However, the association of clinical- and treatment-related factors with thrombosis remains controversial., Objectives: To evaluate the incidence and impact of risk factors for arterial and venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients with ITP and characterize the clinical features and management of patients., Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study (January 1, 2011, to October 30, 2022) of adult patients diagnosed with ITP from an Australian tertiary hospital. The incidence rates of thrombosis were calculated in terms of person-years of follow-up. Multiadjusted Cox regression was used to estimate associations., Results: A total of 220 patients with 1365 person-years of follow-up since ITP diagnosis revealed 26 (11.8%) patients with a total of 37 thrombosis events, 29 (78%) VTE and 8 (22%) arterial thromboembolism (ATE). The incidence rate of thrombosis was 2.71 (95% CI, 1.97-3.72) (0.66 [95% CI, 0.33-1.26] for arterial thromboembolism and 2.05 [95% CI, 1.42-2.95] for VTE) per 100 person-years. Mean age and median time to first thrombosis diagnosis was 56 and 2.13 years, respectively. Age, secondary ITP, lines of therapy, thrombosis risk factors, and thrombopoietin receptor agonist therapy were independently associated with thrombosis. Almost all patients (25 of 26, [96%]) had good ITP disease control prior to thrombosis diagnosis, and antithrombotic therapy was deliverable and well tolerated., Conclusion: Diagnosis of thrombosis in patients with ITP, while infrequent, is of clinical significance. We identified from a heterogeneous real-world cohort that older patients with multiply-treated secondary ITP receiving thrombopoietin receptor agonists are at the highest risk., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

Abstract

The neutron induced fission of 235U is extensively used as a reference for neutron fluence measurements in various applications, ranging from the investigation of the biological effectiveness of high energy neutrons, to the measurement of high energy neutron cross sections of relevance for accelerator driven nuclear systems. Despite its widespread use, no data exist on neutron induced fission of 235U above 200 MeV. The neutron facility n_TOF offers the possibility to improve the situation. The measurement of 235U(n,f) relative to the differential n-p scattering cross-section, was carried out in September 2018 with the aim of providing accurate and precise cross section data in the energy range from 10 MeV up to 1 GeV. In such measurements, Recoil Proton Telescopes (RPTs) are used to measure the neutron flux while the fission events are detected and counted with dedicated detectors. In this paper the measurement campaign and the experimental set-up are illustrated.

Abstract

Neutron capture on 241Am plays an important role in the nuclear energy production and also provides valuable information for the improvement of nuclear models and the statistical interpretation of the nuclear properties. A new experiment to measure the 241Am(n, γ) cross section in the thermal region and the first few resonances below 10 eV has been carried out at EAR2 of the n_TOF facility at CERN. Three neutron-insensitive C6D6 detectors have been used to measure the neutron-capture gamma cascade as a function of the neutron time of flight, and then deduce the neutron capture yield. Preliminary results will be presented and compared with previously obtained results at the same facility in EAR1. In EAR1 the gamma-ray background at thermal energies was about 90% of the signal while in EAR2 is up to a 25 factor much more favorable signal to noise ratio. We also extended the low energy limit down to subthermal energies. This measurement will allow a comparison with neutron capture measurements conducted at reactors and using a different experimental technique.
