Effective surveillance of adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) relies on collaboration between 2 partners: national regulatory authorities (NRAs) and national expanded programmes on immunization (EPIs). In December 2020, the WHO Global Advisory Committee for Vaccine Safety (GACVS) recommended a new case-based indicator of national capacity to monitor vaccine safety: reporting of at least 1 serious AEFI per 1 million total population per year. To meet this indicator, WHO Member States (MS) rely on data generated within functional systems of spontaneous reporting of AEFI. This report describes global, regional and national progress in 2020-2022 in use of the new indicator of capacity to monitor vaccine safety and progress in collaboration between national EPIs and NRAs for reporting AEFIs. Of the WHO MS,1 51 of 214 (24%) used the new indicator in 2020, 111 of 214 (52%) in 2021 and 92 of 215 (43%) in 2022. In 2020, 41 (19%) WHO MS reported AEFI data from both EPIs and NRAs, and the number increased to 55 (26%) in 2021 and to 57 (27%) in 2022. These findings, resulting in part from intensified support for vaccination against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), show that national AEFI surveillance systems increasingly use and share case-based data on vaccine safety; however, work is still required to strengthen global monitoring of vaccine safety. La surveillance efficace des manifestations postvaccinales indesirables (MAPI) repose principalement sur la collaboration entre 2 partenaires: les autorites nationales de reglementation (ANR) et les programmes elargis de vaccination (PEV) nationaux. En decembre 2020, le Comite consultatif mondial de l'OMS pour la securite des vaccins (GACVS) a recommande l'adoption d'un nouvel indicateur fonde sur les cas pour rendre compte des capacites nationales de surveillance de la securite vaccinale. Cet indicateur est le suivant: signalement d'au moins 1 MAPI grave par million d'habitants par an. Pour satisfaire a cet indicateur, les Etats Membres de l'OMS s'appuient sur les donnees provenant de systemes fonctionnels de surveillance spontanee des MAPI. Le present rapport decrit les progres realises aux niveaux mondial, regional et national entre 2020 et 2022 dans l'adoption de ce nouvel indicateur des capacites de surveillance de la securite vaccinale, ainsi que les progres en matiere de collaboration entre les PEV nationaux et les ANR pour la notification des MAPI. Parmi les Etats Membres de l'OMS,1 24% (51 sur 214) ont utilise le nouvel indicateur en 2020, 52% (111 sur 214) l'ont fait en 2021 et 43% (92 sur 215) en 2022. To achieve this indicator, WHO-affiliated countries and territories (WHO countries) rely upon data generated from functional AEFI surveillance systems. This report describes 2020-2022 global, regional, and national progress in use of the newly introduced immunization safety monitoring indicator and progress on joint AEFI reporting from national EPIs and NRAs. Among WHO countries, 51 (24%) of 214 implemented the new indicator in 2020, 111 (52%) of 214 implemented it in 2021, and 92 (43%) of 215 in 2022. In 2020, 41 (19%) WHO countries reported AEFI data jointly from EPIs and NRAs; this increased to 55 (26%) in 2021 and 57 (27%) in 2022.
