We show that, contrary to simple predictions, most AGNs show at best only a small increase of lags with increasing wavelength in the J, H, K, and L bands . We suggest that a possible cause of this near simultaneity of the variability from the near-IR to the mid-IR is that the hot dust is in a hollow bi-conical outflow of which we preferentially see the near side. In the proposed model sublimation or re-creation of dust (with some delay relative luminosity variations) along our line of sight in the hollow cone could be a factor in explaining the changing look phenomenon of AGNs. Variations in the dust obscuration can help explain changes in relationship of H-beta time delay on Luv variability. We present a dynamical study of the narrow-line regions in two nearby QSO2s. We construct dynamical models based on detailed photoionization models of the emission-line gas, including the effects of internal dust, to apply to observations of large-scale outflows from these AGNs. We use Mrk 477 and Mrk 34 in order to test our models against recent HST STIS observations of [O III] emission-line kinematics since these AGNs possess more energetic outflows than found in Seyfert galaxies. We find that the outflows within 500 pc are consistent with radiative acceleration of dusty gas, however, the outflows in Mrk 34 are significantly more extended and may not be directly accelerated by radiation. We characterize the properties of X-ray winds found from the expansion of [O III]-emitting gas close to the black hole. We show that such winds possess the kinetic energy density to disturb [O III] gas at 1.8 kpc, and have sufficient energy to entrain the [O III] clouds at 1.2 kpc. Assuming that the X-ray wind possesses the same radial mass distribution as the [O III] gas, we find that the peak kinetic luminosity for this wind is 2% of Mrk 34's bolometric luminosity, which is in the 0.5% - 5% range required by some models for efficient feedback. Our work shows that, although the kinetic luminosity as measured from [O III]-emitting gas is frequently low, X-ray winds may provide more than one order of magnitude higher kinetic power.

We use Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) long-slit G430M and G750M spectra to analyse the extended [O~III] 5007A emission in a sample of twelve nearby (z < 0.12) luminous (L_bol > 1.6 x 10^45 erg s^-1) QSO2s. The purpose of the study is to determine the properties of the mass outflows of ionised gas and their role in AGN feedback. We measure fluxes and velocities as functions of radial distances. Using Cloudy models and ionising luminosities derived from [O~III] 5007A, we are able to estimate the densities for the emission-line gas. From these results, we derive masses of [O~III]-emitting gas, mass outflow rates, kinetic energies, kinetic luminosities, momenta and momentum flow rates as a function of radial distance for each of the targets. For the sample, masses are several times 10^3 - 10^7 solar masses and peak outflow rates are 9.3 x 10^-3 Msun/yr to 10.3 Msun/yr. The peak kinetic luminosities are 3.4 x 10^-8 to 4.9 x 10^-4 of the bolometric luminosity, which does not approach the 5.0 x 10^-3 - 5.0 x 10^-2 range required by some models for efficient feedback. For Mrk 34, which has the largest kinetic luminosity of our sample, in order to produce efficient feedback there would have to be 10 times more [O~III]-emitting gas than we detected at its position of maximum kinetic luminosity. Three targets show extended [O~III] emission, but compact outflow regions. We present results of a study of the correlation between the infrared (JHKL) and optical(B) fluxes of the nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 for the years 2010 - 2015 using our own data (partially published) in combination with published data of Roberts and Rumstey (2012), Guo et al. (2014) and Schnulle et al. (2013, 2015).We find similar lags for each of the HKL passbands relative to the optical of 37 +-3 days. The lags are the same to within the accuracy of measurement. We do not confirm a significant decrease in the lag for HKL in 2013-2014 previously reported by Schnulle et al. (2015), but we find that the lag of the short-lag component of J increased. We discuss our results within the framework of the standard model, where the variable infrared radiation is mainly due to the thermal re-emission of short-wave radiation by dust clouds close to a variable central source. There is also some contribution to the IR emission from the accretion disk, and this contribution increases with decreasing wavelength. The variability in J and K is not entirely simultaneous, which may be due to the differing contributions of the radiation from the accretion disk in these bands. The absence of strong wavelength-dependent changes in infrared lag across the HKL passbands can be explained by having the dust clouds during 2010-2015 be located beyond the sublimation radius. The relative wavelength independence of the infrared lags is also consistent with the hollow bi-conical outflow model of Oknyansky et al. (2015)., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures

We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [O III] {\lambda}5007 emission for a sample of 12 nearby (z < 0.12), luminous Type 2 quasars (QSO2s), which we use to measure the extent and kinematics of their AGN-ionized gas. We find the size of the observed [O III] regions scale with luminosity in comparison to nearby, less luminous Seyfert galaxies and radially outflowing kinematics to exist in all targets. We report an average maximum outflow radius of $\sim$600 pc, with gas continuing to be kinematically influenced by the central AGN out to an average radius of $\sim$1130 pc. These findings question the effectiveness of AGN being capable of clearing material from their host bulge in the nearby universe and suggest that disruption of gas by AGN activity may prevent star formation without requiring evacuation. Additionally, we find a dichotomy in our targets when comparing [O III] radial extent and nuclear FWHM, where QSO2s with compact [O III] morphologies typically possess broader nuclear emission-lines., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Optical and near-infrared photometry, optical spectroscopy, and soft X-ray and UV monitoring of the changing-look active galactic nucleus NGC 2617 show that it continues to have the appearance of a type-1 Seyfert galaxy. An optical light curve for 2010$-$2017 indicates that the change of type probably occurred between 2010 October and 2012 February and was not related to the brightening in 2013. In 2016 and 2017 NGC 2617 brightened again to a level of activity close to that in 2013 April. However, in 2017 from the end of the March to end of July 2017 it was in very low level and starting to change back to a Seyfert 1.8. We find variations in all passbands and in both the intensities and profiles of the broad Balmer lines. A new displaced emission peak has appeared in H$\beta$. X-ray variations are well correlated with UV$-$optical variability and possibly lead by $\sim$ 2$-$3 d. The $K$ band lags the $J$ band by about 21.5 $\pm$ 2.5 d and lags the combined $B + J$ bands by $\sim$ 25 d. $J$ lags $B$ by $\sim$ 3 d. This could be because $J$-band variability arises predominantly from the outer part of the accretion disc, while $K$-band variability is dominated by thermal re-emission by dust. We propose that spectral-type changes are a result of increasing central luminosity causing sublimation of the innermost dust in the hollow bi-conical outflow. We present an analysis of 43 years (1972 to 2015) of spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. This includes 12 years of new unpublished observations (2003 to 2015). We compiled about 1600 H$\beta$ spectra and analyzed the long-term spectral variations of the 5100 \AA\ continuum and the H$\beta$ line. Our analysis is based on standard procedures including the Lomb-Scargle method, which is known to be rather limited to such heterogeneous data sets, and new method developed specifically for this project that is more robust and reveals a $\sim$5700 day periodicity in the continuum light curve, the H$\beta$ light curve and the radial velocity curve of the red wing of the H$\beta$ line. The data are consistent with orbital motion inside the broad emission line region of the source. We discuss several possible mechanisms that can explain this periodicity, including orbiting dusty and dust-free clouds, a binary black hole system, tidal disruption events, and the effect of an orbiting star periodically passing through an accretion disc., Comment: Accepted in ApJS, 64 pages, 10 figures and 4 tables

A growing body of evidence suggests that part of, if not all, scattering regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are clumpy. Hence. in this paper, we run radiative transfer models in the optical/UV for a variety of AGN reprocessing regions with different distributions of clumpy scattering media. We use the latest version of the Monte Carlo code STOKES presented in the first two papers of this series to model AGN reprocessing regions of increasing morphological complexity. We replace previously uniform-density media with up to thousands of constant-density clumps. We couple a continuum source to fragmented equatorial scattering regions, polar outflows, and toroidal, obscuring dust regions and investigate a wide range of geometries. We also consider different levels of fragmentation in each scattering region to evaluate importance of fragmentation for the net polarization of the AGN. We find that, in comparison with uniform-density models, equatorial distributions of gas and dust clouds result in grayer spectra, and show a decrease of the net polarization percentage at all lines of sight. The resulting polarization position angle depends on the morphology of the clumpy structure, with extended tori favoring parallel polarization while compact tori produce orthogonal polarization position angles. In the case of polar scattering regions, fragmentation increases the net polarization unless the cloud filling factor is small. A complete set of AGN models constructed from the individual, fragmented regions is investigated. Our modeling shows that the introduction of fragmented dusty tori significantly alters the resulting net polarization of an AGN. We investigate the correlation between infrared (JHKL) and optical (B) fluxes of the variable nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 using partially published data for the last 6 years (2008-2013.). Here we are using the same data as in Oknyansky et al. (2014), but include also optical (B) data from Guo et al. We find that the lag of flux in all the infrared bands is the same, 40 +- 6 days, to within the measurement accuracy. Variability in the J and K bands is not quite simultaneous, perhaps due to the differing contributions of the accretion disk in these bands. The lag found for the K band compared with the B band is not significantly different from earlier values obtained for the period 2000-2007. However, finding approximately the same lags in all IR bands for 2008-2013 differs from previous results at earlier epochs when the lag increased with increasing wavelength. Examples of almost the same lag in different IR bands are known for some other active nuclei. In the case of NGC 4151 it appears that the relative lags between the IR bands may be different in different years. The available data, unfortunately, do not allow us to investigate a possible change in the lags during the test interval. We discuss our results in the framework of the standard model where the variable infrared radiation is mainly due to thermal re-emission from the part of the dusty torus closest to the central source. There is also a contribution of some IR emission from the accretion disk, and this contribution increases with decreasing wavelength. We model the spectropolarimetric signature resulting from the radiative coupling between the innermost parts of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We use a new public version of STOKES, a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code presented in the first paper of this series. The code has been significantly improved for computational speed and polarization imaging has been implemented. We couple continuum sources with equatorial scattering regions, polar outflows, and toroidal obscuring dust and we study the resulting polarization. We compute a grid of thermal AGN models for different half-opening angles of the torus and polar winds. We also consider a range of optical depths for equatorial and polar electron scattering and investigate how the model geometry influences the type-1/type-2 polarization dichotomy for thermal AGNs. We put new constrains on the inflowing medium within the inner walls of the torus. The inflow should be confined to the common equatorial plane of the torus and the accretion disc and have a radial optical depth of 1 < tau < 3. Our modeling of type-1 AGNs also indicates that the torus is more likely to have a large (~ 60{\deg}) half-opening angle. Polarization perpendicular to the axis of the torus may arise at a type-1 viewing angle for a torus half-opening angle of 30{\deg}- 45{\deg} or polar outflows with an optical depth near unity. Our modeling suggests that most Seyfert-2 AGN must have a half-opening angle > 60{\deg} to match the level of perpendicular polarization expected. If outflows are collimated by the torus inner walls, they must not be optically thick (tau < 1) in order to preserve the polarization dichotomy. The wind's optical depth is found not to play a critical role for the degree of polarization of type-2 thermal AGNs but it has a significant impact on the type-1/type-2 polarization dichotomy when the optical depth exceeds tau = 0.3., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present the final results from a high sampling rate, multi-month, spectrophotometric reverberation mapping campaign undertaken to obtain either new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag measurements for several relatively low-luminosity AGNs. We have reliably measured thetime delay between variations in the continuum and Hbeta emission line in six local Seyfert 1 galaxies. These measurements are used to calculate the mass of the supermassive black hole at the center of each of these AGNs. We place our results in context to the most current calibration of the broad-line region (BLR) R-L relationship, where our results remove outliers and reduce the scatter at the low-luminosity end of this relationship. We present results from a multi-month reverberation mapping campaign undertaken primarily at MDM Observatory with supporting observations from around the world. We measure broad line region (BLR) radii and black hole masses for six objects. A detailed analysis of the data from a high sampling rate, multi-month reverberation mapping campaign, undertaken primarily at MDM Observatory with supporting observations from telescopes around the world, reveals that the Hbeta emission region within the broad line regions (BLRs) of several nearby AGNs exhibit a variety of kinematic behaviors. While the primary goal of this campaign was to obtain either new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag measurements for several relatively low luminosity AGNs (presented in a separate work), we were also able to unambiguously reconstruct velocity-resolved reverberation signals from a subset of our targets. Through high cadence spectroscopic monitoring of the optical continuum and broad Hbeta emission line variations observed in the nuclear regions of NGC 3227, NGC 3516, and NGC 5548, we clearly see evidence for outflowing, infalling, and virialized BLR gas motions, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the first results from a high sampling rate, multi-month reverberation mapping campaign undertaken primarily at MDM Observatory with supporting observations from telescopes around the world. The primary goal of this campaign was to obtain either new or improved Hbeta reverberation lag measurements for several relatively low luminosity AGNs. We feature results for NGC 4051 here because, until now, this object has been a significant outlier from AGN scaling relationships, e.g., it was previously a ~2-3sigma outlier on the relationship between the broad-line region (BLR) radius and the optical continuum luminosity - the R_BLR-L relationship. Our new measurements of the lag time between variations in the continuum and Hbeta emission line made from spectroscopic monitoring of NGC 4051 lead to a measured BLR radius of R_BLR = 1.87 (+0.54 -0.50) light days and black hole mass of M_BH = 1.73 (+0.55 -0.52) x 10^6 M_sun. This radius is consistent with that expected from the R_BLR-L relationship, based on the present luminosity of NGC 4051 and the most current calibration of the relation by Bentz et al. (2009a). We present the results of concurrent X-ray and optical monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 79 over a period of more than five years. We find that on short to medium time-scales (days to a few tens of days) the 2-10 keV X-ray and optical u and V band fluxes are significantly correlated, with a delay between the bands consistent with zero days. We show that most of these variations may be well reproduced by a model where the short-term optical variations originate from reprocessing of X-rays by an optically thick accretion disc. The optical light curves, however, also display long time-scale variations over thousands of days, which are not present in the X-ray light curve. These optical variations must originate from an independent variability mechanism and we show that they can be produced by variations in the (geometrically) thin disc accretion rate as well as by varying reprocessed fractions through changes in the location of the X-ray corona., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gaskell et al. (2007) introduced polarization reverberation mapping as a new technique to explore the structure of active galactic nuclei. We present modeling results for the time-dependent polarization signal expected from scattering inside a centrally illuminated spheroid. Such a model setup describes a larger corona surrounding the compact source of an active nucleus. Time-delays between the polarized and the total flux are computed and related to the geometry of the cloud and the viewing angle. We present colour transformations for the conversion of the {\em 2MASS} photometric system to the Johnson-Cousins $UBVRI$ system and further into the {\em SDSS} $ugriz$ system. We have taken {\em SDSS} $gri$ magnitudes of stars measured with the 2.5-m telescope from $SDSS$ Data Release 5 (DR5), and $BVRI$ and $JHK_{s}$ magnitudes from Stetson's catalogue and \citet{Cu03}, respectively. We matched thousands of stars in the three photometric systems by their coordinates and obtained a homogeneous sample of 825 stars by the following constraints, which are not used in previous transformations: 1) the data are de-reddened, 2) giants are omitted, and 3) the sample stars selected are of the highest quality. We give metallicity, population type, and transformations dependent on two colours. The transformations provide absolute magnitude and distance determinations which can be used in space density evaluations at short distances where some or all of the {\em SDSS} $ugriz$ magnitudes are saturated. The combination of these densities with those evaluated at larger distances using {\em SDSS} $ugriz$ photometry will supply accurate Galactic model parameters, particularly the local space densities for each population., Comment: 11 pages, including 10 figures and 7 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a Chandra-LETGS observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 279. This observation was carried out simultaneously with HST-STIS and FUSE, in the context of a multiwavelength study of this source. The Chandra pointings were spread over ten days for a total exposure time of ~360 ks. The spectrum of Mrk279 shows evidence of broad emission features, especially at the wavelength of the OVII triplet. We quantitatively explore the possibility that this emission is produced in the broad line region (BLR). We modeled the broad UV emission lines seen in the FUSE and HST-STIS spectra following the ``locally optimally emitting cloud" approach. We find that the X-ray lines luminosity derived from the best fit BLR model can match the X-ray features, suggesting that the gas producing the UV lines is sufficient to account also for the X-ray emission. The spectrum is absorbed by ionized gas whose total column density is ~5x10^{20} cm^{-2}. The absorption spectrum can be modeled by two distinct gas components (log xi ~ 0.47 and 2.49, respectively) both showing a significant outflow velocity. However, the data allow also the presence of intermediate ionization components. The distribution of the column densities of such extra components as a function of the ionization parameter is not consistent with a continuous, power law-like, absorber, suggesting a complex structure for the gas outflow for Mrk 279 (abridged)., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures. We present the results of a two-year long optical monitoring program of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Akn 564. The majority of this monitoring project was also covered by X-ray observations (RXTE) and for a period of ~50 days, we observed the galaxy in UV (HST) and X-rays (RXTE & ASCA) simultaneously with the ground-based observations. Rapid and large-amplitude variations seen in the X-ray band, on a daily and hourly time-scale, were not detected at optical and UV wavelengths, which in turn exhibited much lower variability either on short (one day) or long (several months) time-scales. The only significant optical variations can be described as two 2--4 day events with ~10% flux variations. We detect no significant optical line variations and thus cannot infer a reverberation size for the broad-line region. Similarly, the large X-ray variations seem to vanish when the light curve is smoothed over a period of 30 days. The UV continuum follows the X-rays with a lag of ~0.4 days, and the optical band lags the UV band by ~2 days. No significant correlation was found between the entire X-ray dataset and the optical band. Focusing on a 20-day interval around the strongest optical event we detect a significant X-ray--optical correlation with similar events seen in the UV and X-rays. Our data are consistent with reprocessing models on the grounds of the energy emitted in this single event. Results of a ground-based optical monitoring campaign on NGC5548 in June 1998 are presented. The broad-band fluxes (U,B,V), and the spectrophotometric optical continuum flux F_lambda(5100 A) monotonically decreased in flux while the broad-band R and I fluxes and the integrated emission-line fluxes of Halpha and Hbeta remained constant to within 5%. On June 22, a short continuum flare was detected in the broad band fluxes. It had an amplitude of about ~18% and it lasted only ~90 min. The broad band fluxes and the optical continuum F_lambda(5100 A) appear to vary simultaneously with the EUV variations. No reliable delay was detected for the broad optical emission lines in response to the EUVE variations. Narrow Hbeta emission features predicted as a signature of an accretion disk were not detected during this campaign. However, there is marginal evidence for a faint feature at lambda = 4962 A with FWHM=~6 A redshifted by Delta v = 1100 km/s with respect to Hbeta_narrow., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publishing in A&A

Analysis of spectra of the quasar 3C 390.3 covering a period of over 20 yr shows that the blueshifted peak of H beta has been changing its radial velocity at an almost constant rate during this time. The radial velocity has increased by over 1500 km/s. The lower limit to the period of radial velocity changes is 210 yr. Although very long periods cannot be excluded by the radial velocity curve alone, other considerations suggest that the period is about 300 yr. If the radial velocity changes are due to orbital motion, the radius of the orbit is about 0.3 pc and the total mass of the system is about 7 * 10**9 solar masses. In the binary black-hole model the masses of the two holes are about 2.2 * 10**9 solar masses. and about 4.4 * 10**9 solar masses. A possible third peak claimed to be present in some 1974-75 spectra is shown to be an instrumental artifact. The narrowness of the displaced peaks in 3C 390.3 objects requires that the broad line region cloud motions are not governed solely by gravity. The black hole masses derived by Koratkar & Gaskell (1991) need to be increased significantly. Some quasars show Doppler shifted broad emission line peaks. I give new statistics of the occurrence of these peaks and show that, while the most spectacular cases are in quasars with strong radio jets inclined to the line of sight, they are also almost as common in radio-quiet quasars. Theories of the origin of the peaks are reviewed and it is argued that the displaced peaks are most likely produced by the supermassive binary model. The separations of the peaks in the 3C 390.3-type objects are consistent with orientation-dependent "unified models" of quasar activity.
