1. In-gap band in the one-dimensional two-orbital Kanamori-Hubbard model with inter-orbital Coulomb interaction

Abstract

We study the electronic spectral properties at zero temperature of the one-dimensional (1D) version of the degenerate two-orbital Kanamori Hubbard model (KHM), one of the well established frameworks to study transition metal compounds, using state-of-the-art numerical techniques based on the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. While the system is Mott insulating for the half-filled case, as expected for an interacting 1D system, we find interesting and rich structures in the single-particle density of states (DOS) for the hole-doped system. In particular, we find the existence of in-gap states which are pulled down to lower energies from the upper Hubbard band (UHB) with increasing the inter-orbital Coulomb interaction $V$. We analyze the composition of the DOS by projecting it onto different local excitations and we observe that for large dopings these in-gap excitations are formed mainly by inter-orbital holon-doublon (HD) states and their energies follow approximately the HD states in the atomic limit. We observe that the Hund interaction $J$ increases the width of the in-gap band, as expected from the two-particle fluctuations in the Hamiltonian. The observation of a finite density of states within the gap between the Hubbard bands for this extended 1D model indicates that these systems present a rich excitation spectra which could help us understand the microscopic physics behind multi-orbital compounds.

Abstract

Recent theory and experiments have showcased how to harness quantum mechanics to assemble heat/information engines with efficiencies that surpass the classical Carnot limit. So far, this has required atomic engines that are driven by cumbersome external electromagnetic sources. Here, using molecular spintronics, we propose an implementation that is both electronic and autonomous. Our spintronic quantum engine heuristically deploys several known quantum assets by having a chain of spin qubits formed by the paramagnetic Co centers of phthalocyanine (Pc) molecules electronically interact with electron-spin selecting Fe/C60 interfaces. Density functional calculations reveal that transport fluctuations across the interface can stabilize spin coherence on the Co paramagnetic centers, which host spin flip processes. Across vertical molecular nanodevices, we measure enduring dc current generation, output power above room temperature, two quantum thermodynamical signatures of the engine's processes, and a record 89% spin polarization of current across the Fe/C60 interface. It is crucially this electron spin selection that forces, through demonic feedback and control, charge current to flow against the built-in potential barrier. Further research into spintronic quantum engines, insight into the quantum information processes within spintronic technologies, and retooling the spintronic-based information technology chain, could help accelerate the transition to clean energy., Comment: \

Abstract

The article describes the main achievements of the NUMEN project together with an updated and detailed overview of the related R&D activities and theoretical developments. NUMEN proposes an innovative technique to access the nuclear matrix elements entering the expression of the lifetime of the double beta decay by cross section measurements of heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. Despite the two processes, namely neutrinoless double beta decay and DCE reactions, are triggered by the weak and strong interaction respectively, important analogies are suggested. The basic point is the coincidence of the initial and final state many-body wave-functions in the two types of processes and the formal similarity of the transition operators. First experimental results obtained at the INFN-LNS laboratory for the 40Ca(18O,18Ne)40Ar reaction at 270 MeV, give encouraging indication on the capability of the proposed technique to access relevant quantitative information. The two major aspects for this project are the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and MAGNEX spectrometer. The former is used for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy ion beams and the latter is the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The use of the high-order trajectory reconstruction technique, implemented in MAGNEX, allows to reach the experimental resolution and sensitivity required for the accurate measurement of the DCE cross sections at forward angles. However, the tiny values of such cross sections and the resolution requirements demand beam intensities much larger than manageable with the present facility. The on-going upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in this perspective is part of the NUMEN project and will be discussed in the article.

Liquid biopsy analysis of miRNAs is a fast-developing field with a considerable likelihood to predict tumor progression and metastasis by targeting genes involved in oncogenesis.Patients and Methods: Differential expression analysis of miRNAs profile in CRPC patients was performed by creating small RNA libraries of circulating miRNAs using HiSeq2500 Illumina platform. A secondary analysis of aligned reads with miRNA identification and quantification was performed using miARmaSeq. Using the Bowtie algorithm, the selected variants were compared to reference nucleotide sequence GRCh38 and miRbase. Novel miRNA sequences were structurally analyzed using mirDeep2®.Results: A total of 16 patients with CRPC were included for analysis. Identified circulating miRNAs were hsa-miR-885-3p, hsa-miR-4467, hsa-miR-4686, hsa-miR-146a-3p, hsa-miR-6514-5p. Genes identified as regulated by these miRNAs were GPR56, BDNF, CTNND1, C17orf62, and DTNA.Conclusion: We explored the miRNA expression profile in patients with CRPC, identifying five miRNAs implicated in the regulation of genes involved in prostate cancer (PCa) oncogenesis and progression. 13. Enhancing Light Emission in Interface Engineered Spin-OLEDs Through Spin-Polarized Injection at High Voltages

Abstract

The quest for a spin-polarized organic light emitting diode (spin-OLED) is a common goal in the emerging fields of molecular electronics and spintronics. In this device two ferromagnetic electrodes are used to enhance the electroluminescence intensity of the OLED through a magnetic control of the spin polarization of the injected carriers. The major difficulty is that the driving voltage of an OLED device exceeds of a few volts, while spin injection in organic materials is only efficient at low voltages. We report here the fabrication of a spin-OLED that uses a conjugated polymer as bipolar spin collector layer and ferromagnetic electrodes. Through a careful engineering of the organic/inorganic interfaces we have succeeded in obtaining a light-emitting device showing spin-valve effects at high voltages (up to 14 V). This has allowed us to detect a magneto-electroluminescence enhancement on the order of a 2.4 % at 9 V for the antiparallel configuration of the magnetic electrodes. This observation provides evidence for the long-standing fundamental issue of injecting spins from magnetic electrodes into the frontier levels of a molecular semiconductor. Our finding opens the way for the design of multifunctional devices coupling the light and the spin degrees of freedom.

Abstract

The study investigated the effects of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) on anaerobic sludge treating lipid-rich wastewater. It involved batch experiments with three sludge samples: two acclimated to lipids and one non-acclimated. The experiments aimed to observe the degradation of LCFA, specifically oleate and palmitate, by dosing them at concentrations ranging from 50 to 600 mg/L. Measurements of the cumulative methane production and the LCFA concentration, quantified as fat, oil, and grease (FOG) were performed. To ensure the sludge was free from other biodegradable substrates, part of the samples was pre-incubated without feed. The tests were conducted with both pre-incubated and non-incubated inoculum sludge. The findings revealed that oleate was degraded more efficiently than palmitate across all sludge samples, with a greater conversion rate to methane. Sludge samples acclimated to lipids showed a superior capacity to degrade LCFA compared to non-acclimated ones. It was noted that at concentrations above 400 mg/L, the conversion of LCFAs to intermediate compounds was inhibited, although this did not affect the subsequent methane production. The study concludes with a recommendation for sludge adaptation strategies to boost the efficiency of anaerobic wastewater treatment systems dealing with lipid-rich waste. 18. Can grassroots movements in water conflicts drive socio-technical transitions in water management systems?

Abstract

Water conflicts open windows of opportunity for grassroots movements to transform water systems. However, academic fields studying social movements in socio-environmental conflicts are not well equipped to deal with complexity, non-linear dynamics, and emergent properties. Therefore, these fields rarely engage with long-term complex social processes and dynamics leading to systemic socio-technical changes. Researching water conflicts driven by grassroots movements, we ask whether and how the latter can influence a socio-technical transition of a water management regime. Through an emblematic water conflict in Mexico, we analyse the grassroots movement's trajectory since the conflict´s inception by following the dynamic process of developing agency. Our findings show that throughout the conflict, the grassroots movement accumulated and mobilized diverse capitals to initiate water management strategies and practices that catalysed change in the water management regime by stalling the implementation of large infrastructures. Eventually, this led to the inception of a sustainable and just transition.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Abstract

The identification of high-risk patients in the early stages of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is critical, because it could help the clinicians to adopt more effective management strategies. We conducted a post hoc analysis of the MANCTRA-1 international study to assess the association between clinical risk factors and mortality among adult patients with IPN. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify prognostic factors of mortality. We identified 247 consecutive patients with IPN hospitalised between January 2019 and December 2020. History of uncontrolled arterial hypertension (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.135–15.882; aOR 4.245), qSOFA (p = 0.005; 95% CI 1.359–5.879; aOR 2.828), renal failure (p = 0.022; 95% CI 1.138–5.442; aOR 2.489), and haemodynamic failure (p = 0.018; 95% CI 1.184–5.978; aOR 2.661), were identified as independent predictors of mortality in IPN patients. Cholangitis (p = 0.003; 95% CI 1.598–9.930; aOR 3.983), abdominal compartment syndrome (p = 0.032; 95% CI 1.090–6.967; aOR 2.735), and gastrointestinal/intra-abdominal bleeding (p = 0.009; 95% CI 1.286–5.712; aOR 2.710) were independently associated with the risk of mortality. Upfront open surgical necrosectomy was strongly associated with the risk of mortality (p < 0.001; 95% CI 1.912–7.442; aOR 3.772), whereas endoscopic drainage of pancreatic necrosis (p = 0.018; 95% CI 0.138–0.834; aOR 0.339) and enteral nutrition (p = 0.003; 95% CI 0.143–0.716; aOR 0.320) were found as protective factors. Organ failure, acute cholangitis, and upfront open surgical necrosectomy were the most significant predictors of mortality. Our study confirmed that, even in a subgroup of particularly ill patients such as those with IPN, upfront open surgery should be avoided as much as possible.

Abstract

We use ultrafast pump-probe transmission spectroscopy to measure the electronic relaxation time for electrons in cobalt nanoparticles embedded on glass substrate using femtosecond laser pulses. We found that the plasmon excitation is inhomogenously broadening with a fast excitation time of 23 fs. and a plasmonic relaxation time of 97fs. The femtosecond laser pulses used in this experiment were come from a Ti:Sapphire resonator that uses a self-mode-locking mechanism based on the nonlinear Kerr effect. The pulses were found to have repetition rate of 103.52MHz with a pulse width of 64.5 fs at FWHM, and 810nm center wavelength., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The study of open clusters and their short period variable stars is fundamental in stellar evolution. Because the cluster members are formed in almost the same physical conditions, they share similar stellar properties such age and chemical composition. The assumption of common age, metallicity and distance impose strong constraints when modeling an ensemble of short period pulsators belonging to open clusters (e.g. Fox Machado et al., 2006). Very recently, Luo et al. (2009) carried out a search for variable stars in the direction of NGC 6811 with CCD photometry in B and V bands. They detected a total of sixteen variable stars. Among these variables, twelve were catalogued as $\delta$ {\it Scuti} stars, while no variability type was assigned to the remaining stars. Abstract

Metallic nanoparticles embedded in dielectrics permit enhanced capture of light at specific wavelengths through excitation of plasmons, i.e. the quanta of coherent and collective oscillations of large concentrations of nearly free electrons. In order to maximize the potential of such enhanced absorption in useful tasks, such as the generation of carriers in photocatalysts and semiconductors, it is important to be able to predict and design plasmonic nanocomposites with desired wavelength-dependent optical absorption. Recently, a mixing approach formulated by Garcia and co-workers [Phys. Rev. B, 75, 045439 (2007)] has been successfully applied to model the experimentally measured broadband optical absorption for ternary nanocomposites containing alloys or mixtures of two metals (from Ag, Au or Cu) in SiO dielectric. In this work we present the broadband optical behavior of important optical coating dielectrics (SiN and SiO) and photocatalyst (TiO) containing various configuration of nanoparticles of Al, Au, Ag, or Cu. The spectral behavior of various combinations of the metallic species in the dielectrics was optimized to show either broadband solar absorption or strong multiple plasmonic absorption peaks. Angular distributions for the elastic scattering of 8Li on 9Be and the neutron transfer reactions 9Be(8Li,7Li)10Be and 9Be(8Li,9Li)8Be have been measured with a 27 MeV 8Li radioactive nuclear beam. Spectroscopic factors for 8Li|n=9Li and 7Li|n=8Li bound systems were obtained from the comparison between the experimental differential cross section and finite-range DWBA calculations with the code FRESCO. The spectroscopic factors obtained are compared to shell model calculations and to other experimental values from (d,p) reactions. Abstract

We have investigated the nanostructure and microstructure resulting from ns laser irradiation simultaneous with deposition of Co films on Si(001) substrates. The spatial order and length scales of the resulting nanopatterns and their crystalline microstructure were investigated as a function of film thickness h and laser energy density E using a combination of atomic force, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopies. The results could be classified into two distinct categories based on the laser energy density used. It was observed that the thickness-dependent E required to melt the Co film (E_{Co}) was lower than Si (E_{Si}) primarily because of the higher reflectivity of Si. Abstract

Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

33. Adsorption capacity of activated carbon derived from date seeds: Characterization, optimization, kinetic and equilibrium studies

Abstract

Agricultural wastes have the potential to be reused in applications such as water/wastewater treatment. Several studies have focused on activating organic waste, such as date seeds, to produce activated carbon. However, these studies have always assumed that all date seeds behave similarly to each other. In this study, we evaluated different types of date seeds and characterized their physical-chemical properties. The results showed variation in the seed-to-fruit weight percentage, ash content, and moisture content among different seed types. Different activation procedures were performed to find the optimum combination of physical and chemical interventions. KOH impregnation yielded better results than H3PO4 impregnation. The maximum adsorption capacity was measured for nine different types of date seeds, and the Khalas seed type yielded the highest methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity of 165 mg of MB/g of activated date seeds (ADS), which is 71% of the capacity of commercial activated carbon (CAC). Kinetics model was fitted to the experimental data, and the pseudo-second-order model provided the best fit, indicating that the adsorption process occurred following a chemical process rather than being controlled by intraparticle diffusion only. The results showed no significant difference among the three isotherm models used to fit the experimental data. The results indicated that there is a significant difference among various types of seeds regarding adsorption performance. The application of ADS in treating synthetic produced water showed that its performance is one third that of CAC. ADS showed promising potential in comparison with CAC, mostly considering the costs involved with CAC.

Abstract

Ca. Accumulibacter was the predominant microorganism (relative FISH bio-abundance of 67 ± 5%) in a lab-scale sequential batch reactor that accomplished enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) while using glucose and acetate as the carbon sources (1:1 COD-based ratio). Both organic compounds were completely anaerobically consumed. The reactor's performance in terms of P/C ratio, phosphorous release and uptake, and overall kinetic and stoichiometric parameters were on the high end of the reported spectrum for EBPR systems (100:9.3 net mg phosphate removal per mg COD consumed when using glucose and acetate in a 1:1 ratio). The batch tests showed that, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a reactor enriched with Ca. Accumulibacter can putatively utilize glucose as the sole carbon source to biologically remove phosphate (COD:P (mg/mg) removal ratio of 100:6.3 when using only glucose). Thus, this research proposes that Ca. Accumulibacter directly anaerobically stored the fed glucose primarily as glycogen by utilizing the ATP provided via the hydrolysis of poly-P and secondarily as PHA by balancing its ATP utilization (glycogen generation) and formation (PHA storage). Alternative hypotheses are also discussed. The reported findings could challenge the conventional theories of glucose assimilation by Ca. Accumulibacter, and can be of significance for the biological removal of phosphorus from wastewaters with high contents of fermentable compounds or low VFAs.

Abstract

Nowadays, humanity is facing a significant challenge due to climate change. Therefore, the pressure to use sustainable ways to solve the current necessities is growing. One of the primary necessities is energy supply, and geothermal resources might represent a sustainable way to solve this. However, detailed monitoring at different development phases is needed to ensure sustainable use. This work proposes a general methodology to assess the sustainable exploitation of any geothermal site in the world. This methodology is based on Los Humeros, a geothermal site in Mexico exploited for the last 30 years. The proposed methodology is based on three basic aspects present in any producing geothermal site in the world: the stored energy, the environmental affectation, and the profitability performance of the project. Since geothermal energy is considered a renewable source and the environmental affectation is low, this work hypothesizes that exploiting the geothermal reservoir at Los Humeros is done under sustainable limits. To prove that, three main objectives were proposed: • To estimate the stored energy in the geothermal system • To determine the CO2 footprint of the power station • To assess the financial performance of the power project Each of the objectives represents one of the three cornerstones to define the sustainability of geothermal exploitation: enough available energy, low environmental impact, and sufficient money to cover all the possible externalities. Los Humeros is located in an active volcanic caldera. Therefore, there is a constant recharge of heat, which means enough energy to supply the demand of the power station for centuries. The first objective resulted in estimating the heat production for the next 30 years. This goal was reached by analysing production data from the wells. This data included mass extraction rate and fluid enthalpy—the analysis derived two production scenarios named pessimistic and optimistic. The optimistic one provided an estimation of 580 PJ, whereas the pessimistic predicted an energy extraction of 430 PJ. These scenarios were based on the quantiles of the historical mass extraction. Enough energy alone does, however, not fulfil the requirement for sustainability. The geothermal reservoir must be constantly monitored to manage the exploitation rate under the system’s sustainability limits and thus, the next generation will be able to exploit this volcanic geothermal reservoir. This last phrase leads to the next objective. The second objective was to determine how large is the CO2 footprint per kWh generated by the power station in Los Humeros. In this accounting, the CO2eq released due to the construction of the power station was included. As a result, with an emission factor of 442 to 580 gCO2eq/kWhel Los Humeros is in the the same range as the average Mexican emission factor (480 gCO2eq/kWhel in 2019). Finally, some options to deal with this CO2 externality were explored. Among them, the possibility of changing the current conversion technology for a closed binary station was considered. However, in order to make this change in technology, Los Humeros needs investment. The government and/or private investors can make this investment, or the profit of the power station can be enough, then the operator company (the Comisión Federal de Electricidad) can finance it in a free-debt scheme. In any case, the project needs to be profitable to solve all the possible externalities. In this sense, this dissertation's third goal was to estimate the power station's profitability. As mentioned before, Los Humeros has been under exploitation for the last 30 years. For the next period, upgrading of the conversion technology was carried out. To do that, the power station required a considerable investment. Therefore, this dissertation's last goal was to estimate two financial metrics to know the profitability of the geothermal power station: the break-even and the net present value (NPV). The NPV was evaluated using different interest rates. The profitability assessment was done for two scenarios. The first one considered the actual business scheme. It is called “the vesting contract”. The second scenario assumes that the power station participates in the open and regulated Mexican electricity market. The vesting contract is designed to prevent the volatility of the spot market, but it also aims to make the power station profitable. The results showed a break-even after 8 years in this scenario and after 4.5 years in the second one. However, the NPV showed only negative values for the second scenario. In principle, that outcome suggests not to invest in this project, yet this NPV evaluation was done for only five years and not for the entire 25 years of the lifetime. After the application of this proposed methodology, the results showed that the current exploitation of Los Humeros is not sustainable. The three studies are necessary to have a wider overview of the current situation of this activity. The results showed enough available energy for the next period. Although the CO2 footprint is comparable with the average fossil Mexican emission factor, some options to mitigate this could be applied with the earnings perceived by the sale of electricity. Thus, exploiting the geothermal reservoir is currently not sustainable, but there is a solid potential to be. The explored aspects defined three indicators: energy, CO2 footprint, and money. Two offered positive results towards sustainability; however, the environmental affectation is a hurdle that could be overcome in the following years. Heutzutage steht die Menschheit aufgrund des Klimawandels vor einer großen Herausforderung. Daher wächst der Druck, nachhaltige Wege zur Lösung der aktuellen Probleme zu finden. Eins der Hauptbedürfnisse ist die Energieversorgung, und geothermische Ressourcen können eine nachhaltigen Beitrag zu dessen Erfüllung leisten. Allerdings ist eine detaillierte Überwachung in den verschiedenen Entwicklungsphasen erforderlich, um eine nachhaltige Nutzung zu gewährleisten. In dieser Arbeit wird eine allgemeine Methodik zur Bewertung der nachhaltigen Nutzung eines beliebigen geothermischen Standorts irgendwo in der Welt vorgeschlagen Als Beispiel für diese Studie und als Basis für diese Methode wurde der geothermischen Standort Los Humeros in Mexiko gewählt, wo seit 30 Jahren produziert wird. Die vorgeschlagene Methode basiert auf drei grundlegenden Aspekten, die an jedem aktiven geothermischen Standort auf der Welt vorhanden sind: die gespeicherte Energie, die Umweltauswirkungen und die Rentabilität des Projekts. Da die geothermische Energie als erneuerbare Quelle gilt und die Umweltauswirkungen gering sind, wird in dieser Arbeit die Hypothese aufgestellt, dass die Nutzung des geothermischen Reservoirs in Los Humeros innerhalb nachhaltiger Grenzen erfolgt. Um dies zu beweisen, wurden entsprechend den genannten Aspekten drei Hauptziele aufgestellt: - Abschätzung der gespeicherten Energie im geothermischen System - Bestimmung des CO2-Fußabdrucks des Kraftwerks - Bewertung der Profitabilität des Kraftwerksprojekts Jedes der Ziele steht für einen der drei Pfeiler der Nachhaltigkeit der Nutzung geothermischer Reservoire: ausreichend nutzbare Energie, geringe Umweltauswirkungen und genügend Geld, um alle möglichen externen Effekte zu decken. Los Humeros liegt in einer aktiven Vulkancaldera. Daher kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass genügend thermische Energie vorhanden ist, um den Bedarf des Kraftwerks für Jahrhunderte zu decken. Das erste Ziel bestand darin, die Wärmebereitstellung für die nächsten 30 Jahre abzuschätzen. Dieses Ziel wurde durch die Analyse der Förderdaten aus den Bohrlöchern erreicht. Diese Daten umfassten die Förderrate und die Fluidenthalpie. Aus der Analyse wurden zwei Szenarien abgeleitet, ein pessimistisches und ein optimistisches. Das optimistische Szenario liefert eine Schätzung von 580 PJ, während das pessimistische Szenario eine Energiegewinnung von 430 PJ ergibt. Diese Szenarien basierten auf den Quantilen der historischen Massenentnahme. Eine ausreichende Energiemenge genügt aber nicht, um die Anforderungen der Nachhaltigkeit zu erfüllen. Das geothermische Reservoir muss feinmaschig überwacht werden, um die Förderrate innerhalb der Nachhaltigkeitsgrenzen des Systems zu steuern, damit auch nachfolgende Generationen dieses vulkanische geothermische Reservoir noch nutzen können. Dieser letzte Satz führt zum nächsten Ziel. Die mit der vulkanischen Aktivität verbundenen CO2-Emissionen sind allgemein bekannt. Daher bestand das zweite Ziel darin, den CO2-Fußabdruck pro erzeugter kWh im Kraftwerk Los Humeros zu bestimmen. Für diese Bilanzierung wurden die Emissionen von Treibhausgasen (CO2eq) durch den Kraftwerksbau berücksichtigt. Das Ergebnis: Mit einem Emissionsfaktor von 442 bis 580 gCO2eq/kWhel liegt Los Humeros unter dem Niveau des durchschnittlichen xii mexikanischen Emissionsfaktors. Abschließend wurden einige Optionen für die Senkung dieses Emissionsfaktors untersucht. Eine Möglichkeit wäre, die Umwandlungstechnologie zu ändern. Um das umzusetzen, braucht Los Humeros Investitionen. Die Regierung und/oder private Investoren können diese Investitionen tätigen oder das Kraftwerk kann diese Aufgabe übernehmen. In jedem Fall muss das Projekt rentabel sein, um alle möglichen externen Effekte auf gesunde Weise zu lösen. In diesem Sinne bestand das dritte Ziel dieser Arbeit darin, die Rentabilität des Kraftwerks abzuschätzen. Wie bereits erwähnt, wurde das Kraftwerk Los Humeros in den letzten 30 Jahren genutzt. Für den nächsten Zeitraum wurde eine Modernisierung der Umwandlungstechnologie durchgeführt. Dazu war eine erhebliche Investition in das Kraftwerk erforderlich. Daher bestand das letzte Ziel dieser Dissertation letztendlich darin, zwei Finanzkennzahlen zu ermitteln, aus denen sich die Rentabilität des Projekts ergibt: den Break-even und den Kapitalwert (NPV). Sie wurden unter Verwendung verschiedener Zinssätze bewertet. Die Rentabilitätsbewertung wurde für zwei Szenarien durchgeführt. Im ersten Szenario wurde das tatsächliche Geschäftsmodell betrachtet. Dabei handelt sich um einen sogenannten Freizügigkeitsvertrag (vesting contract). Das zweite Szenario geht davon aus, dass das Kraftwerk am offenen und regulierten mexikanischen Strommarkt teilnimmt. Der Freizügigkeitsvertrag soll die Volatilität des Spotmarktes verhindern, zielt aber auch darauf ab, das Kraftwerk rentabel zu machen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Gewinnschwelle im ersten Szenario nach 8 Jahren und im zweiten Szenario nach 4,5 Jahren erreicht wird. Der Kapitalwert (NPV) wies jedoch für das zweite Szenario negative Werte auf. Im Prinzip spricht dieses Ergebnis dafür, nicht in dieses Projekt zu investieren, doch wurde diese NPV-Bewertung nur für fünf Jahre und nicht für die gesamten 25 Jahre der Lebensdauer durchgeführt. Nach der Anwendung dieser Methode kann die Auswirkung auf die verschiedenen Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren abgeleitet werden. Unter den gegebenen Umständen ist die Ausbeutung der geothermischen Ressource nicht nachhaltig. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass genügend Energie für den nächsten Zeitraum zur Verfügung steht. Obwohl es einen erheblichen CO2-Fußabdruck gibt, könnten einige Optionen zur Abschwächung dieses Effekts mit den Einnahmen aus dem Verkauf von Strom finanziert werden. Die Ausbeutung des geothermischen Reservoirs ist also momentan nicht nachhaltig, könnte es aber sein. Für die untersuchten Aspekte wurden drei Indikatoren definiert: Energie, CO2-Fußabdruck und Geld. Zwei davon zeigen positive Ergebnisse im Hinblick auf die Nachhaltigkeit; die Umweltauswirkungen stellen jedoch ein Hindernis dar, das allerdings in den nächsten Jahren überwunden werden könnte.

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the discriminatory ability of ultrasound in calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease (CPPD), using microscopic analysis of menisci and knee hyaline cartilage (HC) as reference standard. Methods Consecutive patients scheduled for knee replacement surgery, due to osteoarthritis (OA), were enrolled. Each patient underwent ultrasound examination of the menisci and HC of the knee, scoring each site for presence/absence of CPPD. Ultrasound signs of inflammation (effusion, synovial proliferation and power Doppler) were assessed semiquantitatively (0-3). The menisci and condyles, retrieved during surgery, were examined microscopically by optical light microscopy and by compensated polarised microscopy. CPPs were scored as present/absent in six different samples from the surface and from the internal part of menisci and cartilage. Ultrasound and microscopic analysis were performed by different operators, blinded to each other's findings. Results 11 researchers from seven countries participated in the study. Of 101 enrolled patients, 68 were included in the analysis. In 38 patients, the surgical specimens were insufficient. The overall diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound for CPPD was of 75% -sensitivity of 91% (range 71%-87% in single sites) and specificity of 59% (range 68%-92%). The best sensitivity and specificity were obtained by assessing in combination by ultrasound the medial meniscus and the medial condyle HC (88% and 76%, respectively). No differences were found between patients with and without CPPD regarding ultrasound signs of inflammation. Conclusion Ultrasound demonstrated to be an accurate tool for discriminating CPPD. No differences were found between patents with OA alone and CPPD plus OA regarding inflammation.
