Molecular scattering differential cross sections of 59.5 keV γ-rays have been measured for some compounds of Na, Mg, Al, Ca, and Fe elements at 90°. The γ-rays of Am-241 were counted using a Si(Li) detector of EDXRF (energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence) system. The experimental results have been compared with non-relativistic and relativistic theoretical values. Nous mesurons les sections efficaces differentielles pour des molecules bombardees par rayons γ de 59.5 keV, pour des composes de Na, Mg, Al, Ca et Fe a 90°. Astronomers have puzzled about the origin of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) for 25 years. New events have been discovered since 1991, at the rate of around one a day, although objects responsible for the outbursts could not be identified. GRBs can now be rapidly and accurately located since the launch of the BeppoSAX satellite in 1996. This has been followed by discoveries of x-ray and optical counterparts.

An optical transient within the error box of the gamma ray burst GRB 970508 was imaged 4 hours after the event. It displayed a strong ultraviolet excess, and reached maximum brightness 2 days later. The optical spectra did not show any emission lines, and no variations on time scales of minutes were observed for 1 hour during the decline phase. 'Second-look surgery' is surgery performed at a preselected time interval following the initial, potentially curative surgery. The purpose is to remove any residual local cancer that may have grown since initial surgery before it is too large. Surgical removal of recurrent tumors in patients with colorectal cancer improves survival and can be performed with relative safety. Improved imaging techniques have permitted better selection of candidates for these second-look procedures, which has resulted in improved overall survival rates. A study was undertaken of 86 patients with colorectal cancer; all patients had extensive preoperative evaluation and were assessed using the radioimmunoguided surgery (RIGS) protocol system. With the RIGS protocol, the patient is given an injection of a radio-tagged antibody prior to surgery. At surgery, the patient is evaluated using an ultrasound device to detect concentrations of the antibody and to identify suspicious sites for biopsy. This is followed by immediate pathological study, and perhaps definitive surgery. Using traditional methods of surgical exploration, 33 patients with colorectal cancer were considered nonresectable, and 53 patients were identified as candidates for further surgery. However, when the protocol was used, only 40 patients were considered eligible for resection. Follow-up information on these three groups of patients indicated that, at two years, 95 percent of the patients identified using the RIGS protocol as resectable survived, compared with only 53 percent of the patients who were identified by exploration as resectable. Thirty-six percent of the patients considered nonresectable by both methods survived. At five years, the only survivors were in the group identified as resectable using the RIGS protocol. It is concluded that use of a radioimmunoguided surgery protocol can increase accuracy in identifying patients who will benefit from resection at the time of second-look surgery. Gamma ray bursts were first discovered in 1973 and were described as rapid, sporadic, on-off flashes of high energy photons in the sky lasting for about 5 milliseconds to a few hours. The origin of these bursts are still unknown however, in 1992 the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) instrument satellite BeppoSAX can detect burst optical transient or x-ray afterglow which can be visible within 1-3 hours giving astronomers adequate time to study.
