Search

Type II supernovae (SNeII) mark the endpoint in the lives of hydrogen-rich massive stars. Their large explosion energies and luminosities allow us to measure distances, metallicities, and star formation rates into the distant Universe. To fully exploit their use in answering different astrophysical problems, high-quality low-redshift data sets are required. Such samples are vital to understand the physics of SNeII, but also to serve as calibrators for distinct - and often lower-quality - samples. We present uBgVri optical and YJH near-infrared (NIR) photometry for 94 low-redshift SNeII observed by the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP). A total of 9817 optical and 1872 NIR photometric data points are released, leading to a sample of high-quality SNII light curves during the first ~150 days post explosion on a well-calibrated photometric system. The sample is presented and its properties are analysed and discussed through comparison to literature events. We also focus on individual SNeII as examples of classically defined subtypes and outlier objects. Making a cut in the plateau decline rate of our sample (s2), a new subsample of fast-declining SNeII is presented. The sample has a median redshift of 0.015, with the nearest event at 0.001 and the most distant at 0.07. At optical wavelengths (V), the sample has a median cadence of 4.7 days over the course of a median coverage of 80 days. In the NIR (J), the median cadence is 7.2 days over the course of 59 days. The fast-declining subsample is more luminous than the full sample and shows shorter plateau phases. Of the non-standard SNeII highlighted, SN2009A particularly stands out with a steeply declining then rising light curve, together with what appears to be two superimposed P-Cygni profiles of H-alpha in its spectra. The long-term solar magnetic activity and its cyclical behaviour, which is maintained by a dynamo mechanism, are both still challenging for the astrophysics. In particular, an atypical event occurred between 1645 and 1715 when the solar activity was remarkably decreased and the number of sunspots got extremely reduced. However, it is still unclear what happened to the solar cycle. The discovery of longer activity minima in cool stars may shed light on the nature of the complex mechanisms involved in the long-term behaviour of the solar-stellar dynamo. Our aim is to explore if the G5V solar-like star HD 4915, which showed a striking chromospheric activity pattern in a previous study performed with HIRES data, could be considered a bona fide Maunder Minimum (hereafter MM) candidate. We have analyzed over 380 spectra acquired between 2003 and 2022 using HARPS and HIRES spectrographs. We carried out a detailed search of activity signatures in HD 4915 by using the Mount Wilson and the Balmer H$_{\alpha}$ activity indexes. This task was performed by means of the GLS periodogram. The new HARPS data show that the chromospheric activity of HD 4915 is not decreasing. In fact, the rise of the activity after the broad minimum in three years gets to the level of activity before that phase, suggesting that it is not entering into a MM phase. HD 4915 shows a distinctive activity behaviour initially attributed to a possible and incipient MM phase. The additional HARPS data allow us to discard a MM in the star. Our analysis shows that the complex activity pattern of HD 4915 could be ruled by a multiple activity cycle, being a shorter cycle of 4.8-yr modulated by a potential longer one. More activity surveys with extensive records and suitable cadence are crucial for accurate identification of stars in Magnetic Grand Minima., Comment: (5 pages, 4 figures)

This work presents the results of modelling the ion dynamics in the ART-MS (Autoresonant Trap Mass Spectrometry) device in the quasi-static approximation. This instrument utilizes an anharmonic, purely electrostatic trap for ion confinement and a radio frequency (RF) voltage source with decrementally varying frequency for selective ion extraction. The autoresonant interaction between the oscillatory motion of the ion and the RF voltage causes an increase in the amplitude of certain confined ions, allowing their selective extraction. Numerical modelling shows that the extraction of ions with a given mass occurs not only at the fundamental frequency but also at its harmonics. This effect reduces the selective properties of devices of this type because along with the main mass component for a given frequency, it is possible to enter the detector channel of ions with another mass, for which this frequency corresponds to the second or higher harmonics, even a superposition of some of these harmonics of different ions., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present the second and final release of optical spectroscopy of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained during the first and second phases of the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP-I and CSP-II). The newly released data consist of 148 spectra of 30 SNe Ia observed in the course of the CSP-I, and 234 spectra of 127 SNe Ia obtained during the CSP-II. We also present 216 optical spectra of 46 historical SNe Ia, including 53 spectra of 30 SNe Ia observed by the Cal\'an/Tololo Supernova Survey. We combine these observations with previously published CSP data and publicly-available spectra to compile a large sample of measurements of spectroscopic parameters at maximum light, consisting of pseudo-equivalent widths and expansion velocities of selected features, for 232 CSP and historical SNe Ia (including more than 1000 spectra). Finally, we review some of the strongest correlations between spectroscopic and photometric properties of SNe Ia. Specifically, we define two samples: one consisting of SNe Ia discovered by targeted searches (most of them CSP-I objects) and the other composed of SNe Ia discovered by untargeted searches, which includes most of the CSP-II objects. The analysed correlations are similar for both samples. We find a larger incidence of SNe Ia belonging to the Cool (CL)and Broad Line (BL) Branch subtypes among the events discovered by targeted searches, Shallow Silicon (SS) SNe Ia are present with similar frequencies in both samples, while Core Normal (CN) SNe Ia are more frequent in untargeted searches., Comment: 59 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. The feasibility to manufacture scaffolds of poly-lactic acid reinforced with Zn particles by fused filament fabrication is demonstrated for the first time. Filaments of 2.85 mm in diameter of PLA reinforced with different weight fractions of $\mu$m-sized Zn - 1 wt. \% Mg alloy particles (in the range 3.5 to 17.5 wt. \%) were manufactured by a double extrusion in method in which standard extrusion is followed by a precision extrusion in a filament-maker machine. Filaments with constant diameter, negligible porosity and a homogeneous reinforcement distribution were obtained for Zn weight fractions of up to 10.5\%. It was found that the presence of Zn particles led to limited changes in the physico-chemical properties of the PLA that did not affect the window temperature for 3D printing nor the melt flow index. Thus, porous scaffolds could be manufactured by fused filament fabrication at 190\textdegree C with poly-lactic acid/Zn composites containing 3.5 and 7 wt. \% of Zn and at 170\textdegree C when the Zn content was 10.5 wt. \% with excellent dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties.

Understanding the formation of substructures in protoplanetary disks is vital for gaining insights into dust growth and the process of planet formation. Studying these substructures in highly embedded Class 0 objects using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), however, poses significant challenges. Nonetheless, it is imperative to do so to unravel the mechanisms and timing behind the formation of these substructures. In this study, we present high-resolution ALMA data at Bands 6 and 4 of the NGC1333 IRAS4A Class 0 protobinary system. This system consists of two components, A1 and A2, separated by 1.8" and located in the Perseus molecular cloud at $\sim$293 pc distance. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the dust properties and formation of substructures in the early stages, we conducted a multi-wavelength analysis of IRAS4A1. Additionally, we sought to address whether the lack of observed substructures in very young disks, could be attributed to factors such as high degrees of disk flaring and large scale heights. To explore this phenomenon, we employed radiative transfer models using RADMC-3D. Our multi-wavelength analysis of A1 discovered characteristics such as high dust surface density, substantial dust mass within the disk, and elevated dust temperatures. These findings suggest the presence of large dust grains compared to the ones in the interstellar medium (ISM), greater than 100 microns in size within the region. Furthermore, while there's no direct detection of any substructure, our models indicate that some, such as a small gap, must be present. In summary, this result implies that disk substructures may be masked or obscured by a large scale height in combination with a high degree of flaring in Class 0 disks. As part of the GLOSTAR (GLObal view of STAR formation in the Milky Way) survey, we present the high-resolution continuum source catalog for the regions (l = 2-28, 36-40, 56-60, &|b|<1.0), observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in its B-configuration. The continuum images are optimized to detect compact sources on angular scales up to 4", and have a typical noise level of 1sigma ~ 0.08mJy/beam for an angular resolution of 1", which makes GLOSTAR currently the highest resolution as well as the most sensitive radio survey of the northern Galactic plane at 4-8GHz. We extracted 13354 sources above a threshold of 5sigma and 5437 sources above 7sigma that represent the high-reliability catalog. We determined the in-band spectral index (alpha) for the sources in the 7sigma-threshold catalog. The mean value is alpha=-0.6, which indicates that the catalog is dominated by sources emitting non-thermal radio emission. We identified the most common source types detected in radio surveys: 251 HII region candidates (113 new), 282 planetary nebulae (PNe) candidates (127 new), 784 radio star candidates (581 new), and 4080 extragalactic radio source candidates (2175 new). A significant fraction of HII regions and PNe candidates have alpha<-0.1 indicating that these candidates could contain radio jets, winds or outflows from high-mass and low-mass stellar objects. We identified 245 variable radio sources by comparing the flux densities of compact sources from the GLOSTAR survey and the Co-Ordinated Radio `N' Infrared Survey for High-mass star formation (CORNISH), and find that most of them are infrared quiet. The catalog is typically 95% complete for point sources at a flux density of 0.6 mJy (i.e. typical 7sigma level) and the systematic positional uncertainty is <= 0.1". Due to the issues associated with rare-earth elements, there arises a strong need for magnets with properties between those of ferrites and rare-earth magnets that could substitute the latter in selected applications. Here, we produce a high remanent magnetization composite bonded magnet by mixing FeCo nanowire powders with hexaferrite particles. In the first step, metallic nanowires with diameters between 30 and 100 nm and length of at least 2 {\mu}m are fabricated by electrodeposition. The oriented as-synthesized nanowires show remanence ratios above 0.76 and coercivities above 199 kA/m and resist core oxidation up to 300 {\deg}C due to the existence of a > 8 nm thin oxide passivating shell. In the second step, a composite powder is fabricated by mixing the nanowires with hexaferrite particles. After the optimal nanowire diameter and composite composition are selected, a bonded magnet is produced. The resulting magnet presents a 20% increase in remanence and an enhancement of the energy product of 48% with respect to a pure hexaferrite (strontium ferrite) magnet. These results put nanowire-ferrite composites at the forefront as candidate materials for alternative magnets for substitution of rare earths in applications that operate with moderate magnet performance.

We investigate the local proton energization at magnetic discontinuities/intermittent structures and the corresponding kinetic signatures in velocity phase space in Alfv\'enic and non-Alfv\'enic wind streams observed by Parker Solar Probe. By means of the Partial Variance of Increments method, we find that the hottest proton populations are localized around compressible, kinetic-scale magnetic structures in both types of wind. Furthermore, the Alfv\'enic wind shows preferential enhancements of $T_\parallel$ as smaller scale structures are considered, whereas the non-Alfvenic wind shows preferential $T_\bot$ enhancements. Although proton beams are present in both types of wind, the proton velocity distribution function displays distinct features. Hot beams, i.e., beams with beam-to-core perpendicular temperature up to three times larger than the total distribution anisotropy, are found in the non-Alfv\'enic wind, whereas colder beams in the Alfv\'enic wind. Our data analysis is complemented by 2.5D hybrid simulations in different geometrical setups, which support the idea that proton beams in Alfv\'enic and non-Alfv\'enic wind have different kinetic properties and origins. The development of a perpendicular nonlinear cascade, favored in balanced turbulence, allows a preferential relative enhancement of the perpendicular plasma temperature and the formation of hot beams. Cold field-aligned beams are instead favored by Alfv\'en wave steepening. Non-Maxwellian distribution functions are found near discontinuities and intermittent structures, pointing to the fact that the nonlinear formation of small-scale structures is intrinsically related to the development of highly non-thermal features in collisionless plasmas.

Using observations with e-MERLIN and the VLA, together with archival data from ALMA, we obtain high-resolution radio images of two binary YSOs: L1551 IRS 5 and L1551 NE, covering a wide range of frequencies from 5 - 336 GHz, and resolving emission from the radio jet on scales of only ~15 au. By comparing these observations to those from a previous epoch, it is shown that there is a high degree of variability in the free-free emission from the jets of these sources. In particular, the northern component of L1551 IRS 5 shows a remarkable decline in flux density of a factor of ~5, suggesting that the free-free emission of this source has almost disappeared. By fitting the spectra of the sources, the ionised mass-loss rates of the jets are derived and it is shown that there is significant variability of up to a factor of ~6 on timescales of ~20 years. Using radiative transfer modelling, we also obtained a model image for the jet of the southern component of L1551 IRS 5 to help study the inner region of the ionised high-density jet. In this work, we retracked altimeter waveforms of ESA satellites. ERS2 RA and Envisat RA2 from descending track 0360 over the eastern side of the Strait of Gibraltar using the Adaptive Leading Edge Subwaveform ALES retracker.

Quasi-equilibrium states that can be prepared in solids through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques are out-of-equilibrium states that slowly relax towards thermodynamic equilibrium with the lattice. In this work, we use the quantum discord dynamics as a witness of the quantum correlation in this kind of state. The studied system is a dipole interacting spin pair whose initial state is prepared with the NMR Jeener-Broekaert pulse sequence, starting from equilibrium at high temperature and high external magnetic field. It then evolves as an open quantum system within two different dynamic scenarios: adiabatic decoherence driven by the coupling of the pairs to a common phonon field, described within a non-markovian approach; and spin-lattice relaxation represented by a markovian master equation, and driven by thermal fluctuations. In this way, the studied model is endowed with the dynamics of a realistic solid sample. The quantum discord rapidly increases during the preparation of the initial state, escalating several orders of magnitude compared with thermal equilibrium at room temperature. Despite the vanishing of coherences during decoherence, the quantum discord oscillates around this high value and undergoes a minor attenuation, holding the same order of magnitude as the initial state. Several radio sources have been detected in the HMSFR W75N(B), among them the massive YSOs VLA1 and VLA2 are of great interest. These are thought to be in different evolutionary stages. In particular, VLA1 is at the early stage of the photoionization and it is driving a thermal radio jet, while VLA2 is a thermal, collimated ionized wind surrounded by a dusty disk or envelope. In both sources 22 GHz water masers have been detected in the past. Those around VLA1 show a persistent distribution along the radio jet and those around VLA2 have instead traced the evolution from a non-collimated to a collimated outflow over a period of 20 years. By monitoring the polarized emission of the water masers around both VLA1 and VLA2 over a period of 6 years, we aim to determine whether the maser distributions show any variation over time and whether the magnetic field behaves accordingly. The EVN was used in full polarization and phase-reference mode to measure the absolute positions of the masers and to determine both the orientation and the strength of the magnetic field. We observed four epochs separated by two years from 2014 to 2020. We detected polarized emission from the water masers around both the YSOs in all the epochs. We find that the masers around VLA1 are tracing a nondissociative shock originating from the expansion of the thermal radio jet, while the masers around VLA2 are tracing an asymmetric expansion of the gas that is halted in the northeast where the gas likely encounters a very dense medium. We also found that the magnetic field inferred from the water masers in each epoch can be considered as a portion of a quasi-static magnetic field estimated in that location rather than in that time. We present new VLA observations, between 6.8mm and 66mm, of the edge-on Class~I disk IRAS04302+2247. Observations at 6.8mm and 9.2mm lead to the detection of thermal emission from the disk, while shallow observations at the other wavelengths are used to correct for emission from other processes. The disk radial brightness profile transitions from broadly extended in previous ALMA 0.9mm and 2.1mm observations to much more centrally brightened at 6.8mm and 9.2mm, which can be explained by optical depth effects. The radiative transfer modeling of the 0.9mm, 2.1mm, and 9.2mm data suggests that the grains are smaller than 1cm in the outer regions of the disk and allows us to obtain the first lower limit for the scale height of grains emitting at millimeter wavelengths in a protoplanetary disk. We find that the millimeter dust scale height is between 1au and 6au at a radius 100au from the central star, while the gas scale height is estimated to be about 7au, indicating a modest level of settling. The estimated dust height is intermediate between less evolved Class 0 sources, that are found to be vertically thick, and more evolved Class II sources, which show a significant level of settling. We study the parametric decay instability of parallel propagating Alfv\'en wave in a low-beta plasma using one-dimensional fully kinetic simulations. We focus for the first time on the conversion of the energy stored in the initial Alfv\'en wave into particle internal energy, and on its partition between particle species. We show that compressible fluctuations generated by the decay of the pump wave into a secondary ion-acoustic mode and a reflected Alfv\'en wave contribute to the gain of internal energy via two distinct mechanisms. First, the ion-acoustic mode leads nonlinearly to proton trapping and proton phase space mixing, in agreement with previous work based on hybrid simulations. Second, during the nonlinear stage, a compressible front of the fast type develops at the steepened edge of the backward Alfv\'en wave leading to a field-aligned proton beam propagating backwards at the Alfv\'en speed. We find that parametric decay heats preferentially protons, which gain about 50% of the pump wave energy in the form of internal energy. However, we find that electrons are also energized and that they contribute to the total energy balance by gaining 10% of the pump wave energy. By investigating energy partition and particle heating during parametric decay, our results contribute to determine the role of compressible and kinetic effects in wave-driven models of the solar wind.

Sn adatoms on a Si(111) substrate with 1/3 monolayer coverage form a two-dimensional triangular adatom lattice with one unpaired electron per site and an antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state. The Sn layers can be modulation hole-doped and metallized using heavily-doped $p$-type Si(111) substrates, and become superconducting at low temperatures. While the pairing symmetry of the superconducting state is currently unknown, the combination of repulsive interactions and frustration inherent to the triangular adatom lattice opens up the possibility for a chiral order parameter. Here, we study the superconducting state of Sn/Si(111) using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and quasi-particle interference imaging. We find evidence for a doping-dependent $T_c$ with a fully gapped order parameter, the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking, and a strong enhancement of the zero-bias conductance near the edges of the superconducting domains. While each individual piece of evidence could have a more mundane interpretation, our combined results suggest the tantalizing possibility that Sn/Si(111) is an unconventional chiral d-wave superconductor.

As part of the GLOSTAR survey we have used the VLA in its B-configuration to observe the part of the Galactic plane between longitudes of 28d and 36d and latitudes from -1d to +1d at the C-band (4--8 GHz). To reduce the contamination of extended sources that are not well recovered by our coverage of the (u, v)-plane we discarded short baselines that are sensitive to emission on angular scales $<4"$. The resulting radio continuum images have an angular resolution of 1.0", and sensitivity of $\sim60 \mu$Jy~beam$^{-1}$; making it the most sensitive radio survey covering a large area of the Galactic plane with this angular resolution. An automatic source extraction algorithm was used in combination with visual inspection to identify a total of 3325 radio sources. A total of 1457 radio sources are $\geq7\sigma$ and comprise our highly reliable catalog; 72 of these are grouped as 22 fragmented sources, e.g., multiple components of an extended and resolved source. To explore the nature of the catalogued radio sources we searched for counterparts at millimeter and infrared wavelengths. Our classification attempts resulted in 93 HII region candidates, 104 radio stars, 64 planetary nebulae, while most of the remaining radio sources are suggested to be extragalactic sources. We investigated the spectral indices ($\alpha$, $S_\nu\propto\nu^\alpha$) of radio sources classified as HII region candidates and found that many have negative values. This may imply that these radio sources represent young stellar objects that are members of the star clusters around the high mass stars that excite the HII regions, but not these HII regions themselves. By comparing the peak flux densities from the GLOSTAR and CORNISH surveys we have identified 49 variable radio sources, most of them with an unknown nature. Today, there exists a wide variety of algorithms dedicated to high-contrast imaging, especially for the detection and characterisation of exoplanet signals. These algorithms are tailored to address the very high contrast between the exoplanet signal(s), which can be more than two orders of magnitude fainter than the bright starlight residuals in coronagraphic images. The starlight residuals are inhomogeneously distributed and follow various timescales that depend on the observing conditions and on the target star brightness. Disentangling the exoplanet signals within the starlight residuals is therefore challenging, and new post-processing algorithms are striving to achieve more accurate astrophysical results. The Exoplanet Imaging Data Challenge is a community-wide effort to develop, compare and evaluate algorithms using a set of benchmark high-contrast imaging datasets. After a first phase ran in 2020 and focused on the detection capabilities of existing algorithms, the focus of this ongoing second phase is to compare the characterisation capabilities of state-of-the-art techniques. The characterisation of planetary companions is two-fold: the astrometry (estimated position with respect to the host star) and spectrophotometry (estimated contrast with respect to the host star, as a function of wavelength). We analyze the micromagnetics of short longitudinal modulations of a high-magnetization material in cylindrical nanowires made of a soft-magnetic material of lower magnetization such as permalloy, combining magnetic microscopy, analytical modeling, and micromagnetic simulations. The mismatch of magnetization induces curling of magnetization around the axis in the modulations, in an attempt to screen the interfacial magnetic charges. The curling angle increases with modulation length, until a plateau is reached with nearly full charge screening for a specific length scale~$\Delta_\mathrm{mod}$, larger than the dipolar exchange length of any of the two materials. The curling circulation can be switched by the Oersted field arising from a charge current with typical magnitude $10^{12} A/m^{2}$ for a diameter of $\sim$100 nm, and reaching a maximum for $\Delta_\mathrm{mod}$.

Winds from massive stars have recently been deemed promising sites for investigating relativistic particle acceleration. Particularly, the resulting bow shock from the interaction of the winds of runaway stars with interstellar matter has been observed at multiple wavelengths. Here we investigate the O4If star, BD+433654, the bow shock of which is, so far, the only one proven to radiate both thermally and non-thermally at radio frequencies. We also consider NGC7635 as a bow shock candidate and examine its apex for indications of thermal and non-thermal radio emission. We observed both sources with the VLA at 4-8 GHz and 8-12 GHz, and with the Effelsberg telescope at 4-8 GHz. We analysed data from both telescopes individually and combined, obtained their spectral index maps and calculated their Spectral Energy Distributions. We present the first high-resolution maps of radio emission from NGC7635. We find that both emit non-thermal emission in the radio regime, with the clearest evidence for NGC7635. Our results are less conclusive for BD+433654, as the emission from its bow shock becomes weaker and fainter at higher radio frequencies. Our results extend the previous radio results for the BD+433654 bow shock to higher frequencies. Modelling of our data for both sources shows that accelerated electrons at the wind termination shock are a plausible source for the non-thermal radio emission, but energetics arguments suggest that any non-thermal X-ray and $\gamma$-ray emission could be significantly below existing upper limits. Enhanced synchrotron emission from compressed Galactic cosmic rays in the radiative bow shock could also explain the radio emission from the BD+433654 bow shock but not NGC7635. Non-detection of point-like radio emission from BD+433654 puts an upper limit on the mass-loss rate of the star that is lower than values quoted in the literature. This paper proposes Panoptic Narrative Grounding, a spatially fine and general formulation of the natural language visual grounding problem. We establish an experimental framework for the study of this new task, including new ground truth and metrics, and we propose a strong baseline method to serve as stepping stone for future work. We exploit the intrinsic semantic richness in an image by including panoptic categories, and we approach visual grounding at a fine-grained level by using segmentations. In terms of ground truth, we propose an algorithm to automatically transfer Localized Narratives annotations to specific regions in the panoptic segmentations of the MS COCO dataset. To guarantee the quality of our annotations, we take advantage of the semantic structure contained in WordNet to exclusively incorporate noun phrases that are grounded to a meaningfully related panoptic segmentation region. The proposed baseline achieves a performance of 55.4 absolute Average Recall points. We present Very Large Array C, X, and Q-band continuum observations, as well as 1.3 mm continuum and CO(2-1) observations with the Submillimeter Array toward the high-mass protostellar candidate ISOSS J23053+5953 SMM2. Compact cm continuum emission was detected near the center of the SMM2 core with a spectral index of 0.24 between 6 and 3.6 cm, and a radio luminosity of 1.3 mJy kpc$^2$. The 1.3 mm thermal dust emission indicates a mass of the SMM2 core of 45.8 Msun. The CO(2-1) observations reveal a large, massive molecular outflow centered on the SMM2 core. This fast outflow ($>$ 50 km/s from the cloud systemic velocity) is highly collimated, with a broader, lower-velocity component. The large values for outflow mass (45.2 Msun), and momentum rate (6 x 10$^{-3}$ Msun km/s/yr) derived from the CO emission are consistent with those of flows driven by high-mass YSOs. The dynamical timescale of the flow is between 1.5 - 7.2 x 10$^4$ yr. We also found from the C18O to thermal dust emission ratio that CO is depleted by a factor of about 20, possibly due to freeze out of CO molecules on dust grains. Our data are consistent with previous findings that ISOSS J23053+5953 SMM2 is an emerging high-mass protostar in an early phase of evolution, with an ionized jet, and a fast, highly collimated, and massive outflow., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the 03fg-like type Ia supernova (SN Ia) ASASSN-15hy from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). ASASSN-15hy shares many of the hallmark characteristics of 03fg-like SNe Ia, previously referred to as "super-Chandrasekhar" SNe Ia. It is bright in the UV and NIR, lacks a clear i-band secondary maximum, shows a strong and persistent C II feature, and has a low Si II $\lambda$6355 velocity. However, some of its properties are also extreme among the subgroup. ASASSN-15hy is under-luminous (M$_{B,peak}=-19.14^{+0.11}_{-0.16}$ mag), red ($(B-V)_{Bmax}=0.18^{+0.01}_{-0.03}$ mag), yet slowly declining ($\Delta{m_{15}}(B)=0.72 \pm 0.04$ mag). It has the most delayed onset of the i-band maximum of any 03fg-like SN. ASASSN-15hy lacks the prominent H-band break emission feature that is typically present during the first month past maximum in normal SNe Ia. Such events may be a potential problem for high-redshift SN Ia cosmology. ASASSN-15hy may be explained in the context of an explosion of a degenerate core inside a non-degenerate envelope. The explosion impacting the non-degenerate envelope with a large mass provides additional luminosity and low ejecta velocities. An initial deflagration burning phase is critical in reproducing the low $^{56}$Ni mass and luminosity, while the large core mass is essential in providing the large diffusion time scales required to produce the broad light curves. The model consists of a rapidly rotating 1.47 $M_{\odot}$ degenerate core and a 0.8 $M_{\odot}$ non-degenerate envelope. We present a multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic analysis of thirteen "Super-Chandrasekhar Mass"/2003fg-like type Ia Supernova (SNe~Ia). Nine of these objects were observed by the Carnegie Supernova Project. 2003fg-like have slowly declining light curves ($\Delta m_{15}$(B) $<$1.3 mag), and peak absolute $B$-band magnitudes between $-19

Proton energization at magnetic discontinuities generated by phase-steepened fronts of parallel propagating, large-amplitude Alfv\'enic fluctuation is studied using hybrid simulations. We find that dispersive effects yield to the collapse of the wave via phase steepening and the subsequent generation of compressible fluctuations that mediate an efficient local energy transfer from the wave to the protons. Proton scattering at the steepened edges causes non-adiabatic proton perpendicular heating. Furthermore, the parallel electric field at the propagating fronts mediates the acceleration of protons along the mean field. A steady-state is achieved where proton distribution function displays a field-aligned beam at the Alfv\'en speed, and compressible fluctuations are largely damped. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of Alfv\'enic solar wind.

Context. The properties of the population of Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) are essential to our understanding of the dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the Milky Way. However, the completeness of the catalog of Galactic SNRs is expected to be only ${\sim}30\%$, with on order 700 SNRs yet to be detected. Deep interferometric radio continuum surveys of the Galactic plane help in rectifying this apparent deficiency by identifying low surface brightness SNRs and compact SNRs that have not been detected in previous surveys. However, SNRs are routinely confused with H II regions, which can have similar radio morphologies. Radio spectral index, polarization, and emission at mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths can help distinguish between SNRs and H II regions. Aims. We aim to identify SNR candidates using continuum images from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array GLObal view of the STAR formation in the Milky Way (GLOSTAR) survey. Methods. GLOSTAR is a C-band (4--8 GHz) radio wavelength survey of the Galactic plane covering $358^{\circ} \leq l \leq 60^{\circ}, |b| \leq 1^{\circ}$. The continuum images from this survey, which resulted from observations with the most compact configuration of the array, have an angular resolution of $18''$. We searched for SNRs in these images to identify known SNRs, previously identified SNR candidates, and new SNR candidates. We study these objects in MIR surveys and the GLOSTAR polarization data to classify their emission as thermal or nonthermal. Results. We identify 157 SNR candidates, of which 80 are new. Polarization measurements provide evidence of nonthermal emission from 9 of these candidates. We find that two previously identified candidates are filaments. We also detect emission from 91 of the 94 known SNRs in the survey region. Four of these are reclassified as H II regions following detection in MIR surveys. The Exoplanet Imaging Data Challenge is a community-wide effort meant to offer a platform for a fair and common comparison of image processing methods designed for exoplanet direct detection. For this purpose, it gathers on a dedicated repository (Zenodo), data from several high-contrast ground-based instruments worldwide in which we injected synthetic planetary signals. The data challenge is hosted on the CodaLab competition platform, where participants can upload their results. The specifications of the data challenge are published on our website. The first phase, launched on the 1st of September 2019 and closed on the 1st of October 2020, consisted in detecting point sources in two types of common data-set in the field of high-contrast imaging: data taken in pupil-tracking mode at one wavelength (subchallenge 1, also referred to as ADI) and multispectral data taken in pupil-tracking mode (subchallenge 2, also referred to as ADI mSDI). In this paper, we describe the approach, organisational lessons-learnt and current limitations of the data challenge, as well as preliminary results of the participants submissions for this first phase. In the future, we plan to provide permanent access to the standard library of data sets and metrics, in order to guide the validation and support the publications of innovative image processing algorithms dedicated to high-contrast imaging of planetary systems., Comment: 36 pages, 27 figures. Epitaxial bilayer silicon oxide is a transferable two-dimensional material predicted to be a wide band gap semiconductor, with potential applications for deep UV optoelectronics, or as a building block of van der Waals heterostructures. The prerequisite to any sort of such applications is the knowledge of the electronic band structure, which we unveil using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and rationalise with the help of density functional theory calculations. We discover dispersing bands related to electronic delocalisation within the top and bottom planes of the material, with two linear crossings reminiscent of those predicted in bilayer AA-stacked graphene, and semi-flat bands stemming from the chemical bridges between the two planes. This band structure is robust against exposure to air, and can be controled by exposure to oxygen. We provide an experimental lower-estimate of the band gap size of 5 eV and predict a full gap of 7.36 eV using density functional theory calculations.

The Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) LSQ14fmg exhibits exaggerated properties which may help to reveal the origin of the "super-Chandrasekhar" (or 03fg-like) group. The optical spectrum is typical of a 03fg-like SN Ia, but the light curves are unlike those of any SNe Ia observed. The light curves of LSQ14fmg rise extremely slowly. At -23 rest-frame days relative to B-band maximum, LSQ14fmg is already brighter than $M_V$=-19 mag before host extinction correction. The observed color curves show a flat evolution from the earliest observation to approximately one week after maximum. The near-infrared light curves peak brighter than -20.5 mag in the J and H bands, far more luminous than any 03fg-like SNe Ia with near-infrared observations. At one month past maximum, the optical light curves decline rapidly. The early, slow rise and flat color evolution are interpreted to result from an additional excess flux from a power source other than the radioactive decay of the synthesized $^{56}Ni$. The excess flux matches the interaction with a typical superwind of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star in density structure, mass-loss rate, and duration. The rapid decline starting at around one month past B-band maximum may be an indication of rapid cooling by active carbon monoxide (CO) formation, which requires a low temperature and high density environment. These peculiarities point to an AGB progenitor near the end of its evolution and the core degenerate scenario as the likely explosion mechanism for LSQ14fmg., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Large amplitude Alfv\'en waves tend to be unstable to parametric instabilities which result in a decay process of the initial wave into different daughter waves depending upon the amplitude of the fluctuations and the plasma beta. The propagation angle with respect to the mean magnetic field of the daughter waves plays an important role in determining the type of decay. In this paper, we revisit this problem by means of multi-dimensional hybrid simulations. In particular, we study the decay and the subsequent nonlinear evolution of large-amplitude Alfv\'en waves by investigating the saturation mechanism of the instability and its final nonlinear state reached for different wave amplitudes and plasma beta conditions. As opposed to one-dimensional simulations where the Decay instability is suppressed for increasing plasma beta values, we find that the decay process in multi-dimensions persists at large values of the plasma beta via the filamentation/magnetosonic decay instabilities. In general, the decay process acts as a trigger both to develop a perpendicular turbulent cascade and to enhance mean field-aligned wave-particle interactions. We find indeed that the saturated state is characterized by a turbulent plasma displaying a field-aligned beam at the Alfv\'en speed and increased temperatures that we ascribe to the Landau resonance and pitch angle scattering in phase space.

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2014ab, obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project II (CSP-II) and initiated immediately after its optical discovery. We also present mid-infrared photometry obtained by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) satellite extending from 56 days prior to the optical discovery to over 1600 days. The light curve of SN 2014ab evolves slowly, while the spectra exhibit strong emission features produced from the interaction between rapidly expanding ejecta and dense circumstellar matter. The light curve and spectral properties are very similar to those of SN 2010jl. The estimated mass-loss rate of the progenitor of SN 2014ab is of the order of 0.1 Msun/yr under the assumption of spherically symmetric circumstellar matter and steady mass loss. Although the mid-infrared luminosity increases due to emission from dust, which is characterized by a blackbody temperature close to the dust evaporation temperature (~ 2000 K), no clear signatures of in situ dust formation within the cold dense shell located behind the forward shock are observed in SN 2014ab in early phases. Mid-infrared emission of SN 2014ab may originate from pre-existing dust located within dense circumstellar matter that is heated by the SN shock or shock-driven radiation. The massive star-forming region W75N~(B) is thought to host a cluster of massive protostars (VLA~1, VLA~2, and VLA~3) undergoing different evolutionary stages. In this work, we present radio continuum data with the highest sensitivity and angular resolution obtained to date in this region, using the VLA-A and covering a wide range of frequencies (4-48~GHz), which allowed us to study the morphology and the nature of the emission of the different radio continuum sources. We also performed complementary studies with multi-epoch VLA data and ALMA archive data at 1.3 mm wavelength. We find that VLA~1 is driving a thermal radio jet at scales of $\approx$0.1 arcsec ($\approx$130 au), but also shows signs of an incipient hyper-compact HII region at scales of $\lesssim$ 1 arcsec ($\lesssim$ 1300~au). VLA~3 is also driving a thermal radio jet at scales of a few tenths of arcsec (few hundred of au). We conclude that this jet is shock-exciting the radio continuum sources Bc and VLA~4 (obscured HH objects), which show proper motions moving outward from VLA~3 at velocities of $\approx$112--118~km/s. We have also detected three new weak radio continuum sources, two of them associated with millimeter continuum cores observed with ALMA, suggesting that these two sources are also embedded YSOs in this massive star-forming region., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Massive stars like company. However, low-mass companions have remained extremely difficult to detect at angular separations ($\rho$) smaller than 1" (~1000-3000 au considering typical distance to nearby massive stars) given the large brightness contrast between the companion and the central star. Constraints on the low-mass end of the companions mass-function for massive stars are however needed, for example to help distinguishing between various scenarios for the formation of massive stars. To obtain statistically significant constraint on the presence of low-mass companions beyond the typical detection limit of current surveys ($\Delta \mathrm{mag} \lesssim 5$ at $\rho \lesssim 1$"), we initiated a survey of O and Wolf-Rayet stars in the Carina region using the SPHERE coronagraphic instrument on the VLT. In this first paper, we aim to introduce the survey, to present the methodology and to demonstrate the capability of SPHERE for massive stars using the multiple system QZ~Car. High-contrast imaging techniques, such as angular- and spectral-differential imaging techniques as well as PSF-fitting, were applied to detect and measure the relative flux of companions in each spectral channel of the instrument. We detected 19 sources around the QZ~Car system with detection limits of 9~mag at $\rho > 200$~mas for IFS and as faint as 13~mag at $\rho$ > 1".8 for IRDIS (corresponding to sub-solar masses for potential companions). All but two are reported here for the first time. Based on this proof of concept, we showed that VLT/SPHERE allows us to reach the sub-solar mass regime of the companion mass function. This paves the way for this type of observation with a large sample of massive stars to provide novel constraints on the multiplicity of massive stars in a region of the parameter space that has remained inaccessible so far., Comment: Submitted and accepted by A&A. 17 pages, 10 figures

We present multi-wavelength observations of two gap transients followed by the Carnegie Supernova Project-II and supplemented with data obtained by a number of different programs. Here in the first of two papers, we focus on the intermediate luminosity red transient (ILRT) designated SNhunt120, while in a companion paper we examine the luminous red novae AT 2014ej. Our data set for SNhunt120 consists of an early optical discovery, estimated to be within 3 days after outburst, the subsequent optical and near-infrared broadband followup extending over a $\sim$2 month period, two visual- and two near-infrared wavelength spectra, and Spitzer Space Telescope observations extending from early ($+$28 d) to late ($+$1155 d) phases. SNhunt120 resembles other ILRTs such as NGC 300-2008-OT and SN 2008S, and like these other ILRTs, SNhunt120 exhibits prevalent mid-infrared emission at both early and late phases. From the comparison of SNhunt120 and other ILRTs to electron-capture supernova simulations, we find that the current models underestimate the explosion kinetic energy and thereby produce synthetic light curves that over-estimate the luminosity. We present optical and near-infrared broadband photometry and optical spectra of AT 2014ej from the the Carnegie Supernova Project-II. These observations are complemented with data from the CHilean Automatic Supernova sEarch, the Public ESO Spectroscopic Survey of Transient Objects, and from the Backyard Observatory Supernova Search. Observational signatures of AT 2014ej reveal that it is similar to other members of the gap-transient subclass known as luminous red novae (LRNe), including the ubiquitous double hump light curve and spectral properties akin to the LRN SN 2017jfs. A medium-dispersion, visual-wavelength spectrum of AT 2014ej taken the Magellan Clay telescope, exhibits a P Cygni H$\alpha$ feature characterized by a blue velocity at zero intensity of $\approx 110$ km s$^{-1}$ and a P Cygni minimum velocity of $\approx70$ km s$^{-1}$, and which we attribute to emission from a circumstellar wind. Inspection of pre-outbust Hubble Space Telescope images yields no conclusive progenitor detection. In comparison with a sample of LRNe from the literature, AT 2014ej lies among the brighter end of the luminosity distribution. Comparison of the ultra-violet, optical, infrared (UVOIR) light curves of well-observed LRNe to common-envelope evolution models from the literature, indicates the models under predict the luminosity of the comparison sample at all phases and also produce inconsistent time-scales of the secondary peak. Future efforts to model LRNe should expand upon the current parameter space explored and therefore may consider more massive systems and a wider range of dynamical timescales., Comment: Paper 2 of a series of 2 papers. We present ultra-violet to mid-infrared observations of the long-lasting Type IIn supernova (SN) 2013L obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project II (CSP-II). The spectra of SN 2013L are dominated by H emission features characterized by three components attributed to different regions. A unique feature of this Type IIn SN is that the blue shifted line profile is dominated by the macroscopic velocity of the expanding shock wave of the SN. We are therefore able to trace the evolution of the shock velocity in the dense and partially opaque circumstellar medium (CSM), from $\sim 4800~km~s^{-1}$ at +48 d, decreasing as $t^{-0.23}$ to $\sim 2700~km~s^{-1}$ after a year. We perform spectral modeling of both the broad- and intermediate-velocity components of the H$\alpha$ line profile. The high-velocity component is consistent with emission from a radially thin, spherical shell located behind the expanding shock with emission wings broadened by electron scattering. We propose that the intermediate component originates from pre-ionized gas from the unshocked dense CSM with the same velocity as the narrow component, $\sim 100~km~s^{-1}$, but also broadened by electron scattering. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of SN 2013L after +132 d are well reproduced by a two-component black-body (BB) model. The circumstellar-interaction model of the bolometric light curve reveals a mass-loss rate history with large values ($1.7\times 10^{-2} - 0.15~M_\odot~yr^{-1}$) over the $\sim $25 - 40 years before explosion. The drop in the light curve at $\sim 350$ days and presence of electron scattering wings at late epochs indicate an anisotropic CSM. The mass-loss rate values and the unshocked CSM velocity are consistent with the characteristics of a massive star, such as a luminous blue variable (LBV) undergoing strong eruptions, similar to $\eta$ Carina., Comment: Replaced after language editor corrections, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics, 43 pages, 29 figures. The existence of hot Jupiters is still not well understood. Two main channels are thought to be responsible for their current location: a smooth planet migration through the proto-planetary disk or the circularization of an initial high eccentric orbit by tidal dissipation leading to a strong decrease of the semimajor axis. Different formation scenarios result in different observable effects, such as orbital parameters (obliquity/eccentricity), or frequency of planets at different stellar ages. In the context of the GAPS Young-Objects project, we are carrying out a radial velocity survey with the aim to search and characterize young hot-Jupiter planets. Our purpose is to put constraints on evolutionary models and establish statistical properties, such as the frequency of these planets from a homogeneous sample. Since young stars are in general magnetically very active, we performed multi-band (visible and near-infrared) spectroscopy with simultaneous GIANO-B + HARPS-N (GIARPS) observing mode at TNG. This helps to deal with stellar activity and distinguish the nature of radial velocity variations: stellar activity will introduce a wavelength-dependent radial velocity amplitude, whereas a Keplerian signal is achromatic. As a pilot study, we present here the cases of two already claimed hot Jupiters orbiting young stars: HD285507 b and AD Leo b. Our analysis of simultaneous high-precision GIARPS spectroscopic data confirms the Keplerian nature of HD285507's radial velocities variation and refines the orbital parameters of the hot Jupiter, obtaining an eccentricity consistent with a circular orbit. On the other hand, our analysis does not confirm the signal previously attributed to a planet orbiting AD Leo. This demonstrates the power of the multi-band spectroscopic technique when observing active stars.

This work addresses quantum adiabatic decoherence of many-body spin systems coupled with a boson field in the framework of open quantum systems theory. We generalize the traditional spin-boson model by considering a system-environment interaction Hamiltonian that represents a partition of non-interacting subsystems and highlights the collective correlation that appears exclusively due to the coupling with a common environment. Remarkably, this simple, exactly solvable model encompasses relevant aspects of a many-body open quantum system and features the subtle quantum effects that arise when the size scales up to a macroscopic level. We derive an analytical expression for the time dependence of the density matrix without assuming coarse-graining. The resulting decoherence function is eigen-selective and is a complex exponential whose exponent has a real part that introduces a decay similar to that in the spin-boson model. On the contrary, the imaginary part depends on the quantum numbers and geometry of the whole partition and does not reflect the system temperature. Motivated by decoherence in solid-state NMR we apply the theoretical results to a partition of dipole-coupled spin pairs in contact with a common phonon bath, using typical parameters of hydrated salts. The proposal allows estimating the decoherence time scale in terms of the system physical constants. As a significant novelty, the decoherence function phase depends on the eigenvalue distribution throughout the sample. It plays the leading role, overshadowing the mechanism associated with the bath thermal state. Finally, we apply the formalism to describe decoherence in the "magic echo" NMR reversal experiment. We find that the system-environment correlation explains the origin of irreversibility, and both the decoherence rate value and its dependence on the dipolar frequency, are remarkably similar to the experiment., Comment: 51 pages, 5 figures

Recent high-angular resolution (40 mas) ALMA observations at 1.14 mm resolve a compact (R~200 au) flattened dust structure perpendicular to the HH 80-81 jet emanating from the GGD 27-MM1 high-mass protostar, making it a robust candidate for a true accretion disk. The jet/disk system (HH 80-81 / GGD 27-MM1) resemble those found in association with low- and intermediate-mass protostars. We present radiative transfer models that fit the 1.14 mm ALMA dust image of this disk which allow us to obtain its physical parameters and predict its density and temperature structure. Our results indicate that this accretion disk is compact (Rdisk~170 au) and massive (5Msun), about 20% of the stellar mass of 20 Msun. We estimate the total dynamical mass of the star-disk system from the molecular line emission finding a range between 21 and 30 Msun, which is consistent with our model. We fit the density and temperature structures found by our model with power law functions. These results suggest that accretion disks around massive stars are more massive and hotter than their low-mass siblings, but they still are quite stable. We also compare the temperature distribution in the GGD 27-MM1 disk with that found in low- and intermediate-mass stars and discuss possible implications on the water snow line. We have also carried about a study of the distance based on Gaia DR2 data and the population of young stellar objects (YSOs) in this region, and from the extinction maps. We conclude that the source distance is in within 1.2 and 1.4 kpc, closer than what was derived in previous studies (1.7 kpc)., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

In this study we analyze 70 radio continuum sources associated with dust clumps and considered to be candidates for the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. The detection of these sources was reported by Rosero et al. (2016), who found most of them to show weak (${\scriptstyle <}$1 mJy) and compact (${\scriptstyle <}\,$0.6$^{\prime \prime}$) radio emission. Herein, we used the observed parameters of these sources to investigate the origin of the radio continuum emission. We found that at least $\sim 30\%$ of these radio detections are most likely ionized jets associated with high-mass protostars, but for the most compact sources we cannot discard the scenario that they represent pressure-confined HII regions. This result is highly relevant for recent theoretical models based on core accretion that predict the first stages of ionization from high-mass stars to be in the form of jets. Additionally, we found that properties such as the radio luminosity as a function of the bolometric luminosity of ionized jets from low and high-mass stars are extremely well-correlated. The GLOSTAR survey will study the star formation in the Galactic plane between $-2^{\circ}< \textit{l}< 85^{\circ}$ and $|b| < 1^{\circ}$ with unprecedented sensitivity in both, flux density ($\sim$ 40 $\mu Jy$ beam$^{-1}$) and range of angular scales ($\sim$ 1."5 to the largest radio structures in the Galaxy). In this paper we present the first results obtained from a radio continuum map of a 16 square degree sized region of the Galactic plane centered on $\textit{l} = 32^{\circ}$ and $b = 0^{\circ}$ ($28^{\circ} < \textit{l} < 36^{\circ}$ and $|b| < 1^{\circ}$). This map has a resolution of 18" and sensitivity of $\sim$ 60-150 $\mu Jy$ beam$^{-1}$. We present data acquired with the VLA in D-configuration. Two 1 GHz wide sub-bands were observed simultaneously and centred at 4.7 and 6.9 GHz. These data were calibrated and imaged using the $\textit{Obit}$ software package. The source extraction has been performed using the BLOBCAT software package and verified through a combination of visual inspection and cross-matching with other radio and mid-infrared surveys. The final catalog consists of 1575 discrete radio sources and 27 large scale structures (including W43 and W44). By cross-matching with other catalogs and calculating the spectral indices ($S(\nu) \propto \nu^\alpha$), we have classified 231 continuum sources as HII regions, 37 as ionization fronts, and 46 as planetary nebulae. The longitude and latitude distribution and negative spectral indices are all consistent with the vast majority of the unclassified sources being extragalactic background sources. We present a catalog of 1575 radio continuum sources and discuss their physical properties, emission nature and relation with previously reported. Transition discs are prime targets to look for protoplanets and study planet-disc interactions. We present VLT/SINFONI observations of PDS~70, a transition disc with a recently claimed embedded protoplanet. We take advantage of the angular and spectral diversity present in our data for an optimal PSF modeling and subtraction using principal component analysis (PCA). We report the redetection of PDS 70 b, both the front and far side of the outer disc edge, and the detection of several extended features in the annular gap. We compare spectral differential imaging applied before (PCA-SADI), and after (PCA-ASDI) angular differential imaging. Our tests suggest that PCA-SADI better recovers extended features, while PCA-ASDI is more sensitive to point sources. We adapted the negative fake companion (NEGFC) technique to infer the astrometry of the companion, and derived $r = 193.5 \pm 4.9 \mathrm{mas}$ and PA = 158.7deg $\pm$ 3.0deg. We used both NEGFC and ANDROMEDA to infer the $K$-band spectro-photometry of the protoplanet, and found results consistent with recent VLT/SPHERE observations, except for their 2018/02 epoch measurement in the $K2$ filter. Finally, we derived an upper limit of $\dot{M_b} < 1.26 \times 10^{-7} \big[ \frac{5 M_{\rm Jup}}{M_b} \big] \big[ \frac{R_b}{R_{\rm Jup}}\big] M_{\rm Jup} $ yr$^{-1}$ for the accretion rate of the companion based on an adaptation of PCA-SADI/PCA-ASDI around the Br$\gamma$ line., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures.
